For our Florida students, the  Florida EASE Grant  and the  Florida Bright Futures Scholarship are available to those who qualify. Our Georgia, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania students have the opportunity to qualify for South College Promise . The Yellow Ribbon Scholarship  is also currently offered for all VA Education benefit approved locations.

South College participates in a range of financial aid programs. Financial Aid is available to students who qualify and the financial aid staff work individually with students to determine eligibility as they seek the economic assistance they need to pay for college. Aid is available in the form of scholarships, grants and awards, work-study programs, and loans. We’re happy to participate in numerous federal, state, and private student aid programs, and to offer funding directly. South College is a proud participant in the Tennessee Promise Scholarship, Hope Scholarship, Florida Bright Futures Scholarship, 21st Century Scholarship, South College Promise, and Yellow Ribbon Scholarship programs.

Unfortunately, South College does not offer housing and there are no dormitory facilities at any South College campus. Students who are not within commuting distance of one of our campuses must secure their own residence. Resources are available from the Department of Student Services.

Yes. Through this program, qualified high school students may pursue collegiate coursework either online or in person while completing their high school requirements. Students accepted for dual enrollment can enroll part-time or full-time at any of our locations provided they meet course prerequisites and receive permission from their high school principal or counselor. Qualified students residing in Tennessee are eligible for the Tennessee Dual Enrollment Grant which fully funds their dual enrollment courses at South College. The South College Promise is a tuition assistance grant funded directly by South College and awarded to qualified high school students who wish to pursue dual enrollment courses at our Asheville, Atlanta, Orlando, Pittsburgh and Indianapolis campuses.

Yes, South College participates in scholarships available to those who qualify including the Tennessee Education Lottery Scholarship, Tennessee Promise, HOPE Scholarship, Tennessee Reconnect, Florida Bright Futures Scholarship, Indiana 21st Century Scholarship, and the Yellow Ribbon Promise to name a few. South College also offers several different Grant programs such as those for active military and veterans and those in teacher education programs.

South College is pleased to provide Microsoft Office Pro Plus (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Publisher, OneNote, and InfoPath) to all students enrolled in credit courses at no cost via the Microsoft Student Advantage program! South College, and most of your Instructors, use Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.). To make sure your Instructors can open and grade your assignments, it’s easier to use Microsoft Office programs to create and submit your assignments. You also will receive free downloads of needed applications such as Adobe Acrobat Reader, Quick Time, Windows Media Player and more. Help Desk Assistance is available too.

The South College Military Grant is available to all active-duty military members, veterans with honorable or general discharge status, and military spouses who are not receiving 100% coverage of tuition and fees under any VA educational benefit and/or state, federal, institutional, or private grant or scholarship program. South College has also been a proud participant in the Yellow Ribbon program since 2011. We have other state-specific military grants and programs available to those that qualify. Scholarships and Bursaries

South College Scholarships and Bursaries 2023/24

South College North East Scholar Bursary: Up to £1000 each to four undergraduate students in South College to offset their College accommodation fees.

The South College North East Scholar fund is designed to allow students from low-income backgrounds in the North East to engage fully with the student experience at South College.

Eligibility

• You must be a home undergraduate student, living in College accommodation, who will be starting their studies in 2023/24 and do not already hold an undergraduate degree.
• You must clearly evidence genuine financial need.
• You must be normally resident in one of the following North East postal regions; CA, DH, DL, NE, SR or TS when not at University.
• Be willing to submit a post (ca 500 words) about their activity, with photos, which may be published in the South College Magazine, The Oswald Observer .

Please complete the application form below.

If successful, a payment of £1000 will be paid to offset the award holder’s College accommodation fees in the second or third term of the academic year.

Please note these awards are competitive so please state clearly in your application how you will make the best use of any award.

South College Travel Bursary Fund: Up to £300 each for ten students of South College in need of financial assistance and wishing to travel to support their personal development or their studies. 

• You must have a plan and/or schedule for your personal development activity complete with an itemised summary of costs (you can claim less than the maximum amount if more appropriate). Applications without itemised costs will not be considered .

In 2023/24 applications will be accepted throughout the academic year and assessed on a case-by-case basis until all awards have been made.

If successful, a payment of up to £300 will be paid before the end of term.

South College JCR Levy fund : Up to £150 each for ten students of South College in need of financial assistance to join the Junior Common Room and take part in the full range of social and development activities available in South College.

• Please state clearly in your application how you will make the best use of your JCR Membership.
• Open to any student, whether living in College or not.
• The amount awarded will reflect your levy charge, for example £150 for a three-year undergraduate or £50 for a one-year postgraduate.

If successful, a payment of up to £150 will be paid directly to the JCR, who will confirm your membership. If you have already paid the levy up to £150 will be refunded to you by the College.

South College Opportunities fund : £150 each for ten students of South College in need of financial assistance to take part in the full range of social and development activities available in South College. This might be the cost of a club or society subscription kit, attending Formals, equipment, travel costs, etc. Applicants should account for costs up to the £150 award. Costs may be spread over more than one activity. Individuals may only apply once each academic year.

• You must have a plan and/or schedule for your personal development activity complete with an itemised summary of costs. Applications without itemised costs will not be considered.
• Please state clearly in your application how you will make the best use of the award to take part in College life.

In 2023/24 academic year applications will be accepted throughout the academic year and assessed on a case-by-case basis until all awards have been made.

Owl Scholarship Fund : Each year the College allocates £1000 from its funds to support students of South College through Personal Development Awards and Conference Presentation and Attendance Grants. These awards are worth up to £200 each. Individuals may only apply once each academic year.

• You must have a plan and/or schedule for your personal development activity complete with an itemised summary of costs (you can claim less than the maximum amount if more appropriate). Applications without itemised costs will not be considered.

Accommodation

When do i apply for accommodation.

Students do not need to do anything about accommodation before A-level results are published. Once you have confirmed your place at Durham University you will be sent an accommodation preferences form. The form will be used to allocate your room, so it is important that it is returned as soon as possible. If the accommodation preference form is not returned to us we will assume that the student does not want College managed accommodation.

What's in a bedroom?

Each room comes with a 3/4 sized bed (between a single and a double size), under the bed storgae, mattress protector, wardrobe, desk, desk light, desk chair, roller window blinds, shelf above the bed, and additional plug sockets.

What's in a kitchen?

Each kitchen comes with an iron & ironing board, dustpan & brish, campact vacuum cleaner, mop & bucket, kettle, toaster, microwave, oven, hob, fridge & freezer, and lockable cupboards.

What to bring?

Bedroom - Students will need to provide their own toiletries (including toilet roll), towels, pillows, sheets, duvet and cover.

Kitchen - Students will need to provide their own cooking, eating, and drinking utensils. It is suggested that you bring a selection of pots, pans, plates, bowls, cups/mugs, and cutlery.

General - While our Housekeeping Team will maintain common spaces, students are expected to clean up after themselves and keep their personal spaces in good living condition. We therefore recommend arriving with general cleaning supplies, bin bags, supplies to wash and dry dishes, and items to maintain a general state of cleanliness.

Can I select a preference for toom type?

Yes, we have two bedroom types available, single en-suite rooms and single standard rooms (shared bathroom facilities). Prices of these rooms differ. You can express your interest for room type on the accommodation preference form, which will be sent to you following A Level results.

What is included in the residence cost?

Residence charges are inclusive of heating, electricity, water and WIFI. You will need to purchase your own TV license.

Do all first-year students live in College?

All first-year students are expected to reside in College accommodation in order to take full advantage of the College community. 

Will I have to move out during vacation periods?

Your license to occupy allows you to stay in College over the vacation periods but not the summer holiday (exception for postgraduate students that have a longer contract).

Is accessible accommodation available?

South College has five wheelchair accessible en-suite bedrooms for those students who require this type of accommodation. All accessible study bedrooms are located on the ground floor.

Transport and getting around Durham

Can i park my car at college.

There is no student parking available at South. You are strongly advised not to bring a vehicle to Durham. Wherever possible, please use public transport, cycle, or walk to and from the campus. Cycle stands are provided in College and across the University campus.

Can I bring my bike?

Yes, South College has bike racks and there are others around the University.

Is there a bus?

Yes, South College is located near several bus stops that can take you all around Durham.

How far is the walk to the science site?

The walk to the Science Site is about 12 minutes. Here you will find the Bill Bryson Library, the Teaching and Learning Centre, Physics, Geography, Earth Sciences, Computer Science, Chemistry, Anthropology, Archaeology, Mathematical Sciences, Engineering, Natural Sciences, the Law School, and the Palatine Centre.

How far is the walk to the Bailey?

The walk to the Durham Students’ Union and Elvet Riverside is about 18 minutes. In addition to the DSU, here you can find English Studies, MLAC, Liberal Arts, and the Faculty of Arts & Humanities. A few minutes more and you can be at Sports Science and Philosophy on Old Elvet or at Classics and History on the Bailey.

Where are the local food shops?

T he closest major food shop is Tesco Metro in the Market Place. This is about a 23-minute walk from South. A little further are Tesco Express, Sainsbury’s Local, and Iceland Foods all located on North Road. There is also Tesco Extra, Aldi, Lidl, and Iceland Foods located in Gilesgate.
