Recent tour reviews

After taking multiple trips overseas to see The Men In Black, I was extremely excited to see them locally. It’s been a long, long time since I’ve seen them in Los Angeles.

I can empathically say they did not disappoint. Not only did we get to hear the staples, “Grip”, “No More Hero’s”, “Duchess”,”Golden Brown”, etc. We were given the gift of two new unrecorded cuts that sounded great. The caveat was their delving into the songbook and playing exceptional cuts that surprised even me. “Time To Die” from Stranglers In The Night. Multiple cuts from the outstanding album The Raven including “Baroque Bordello” which blew me away. They even dusted off “Nubiles”.

These boys tour relentlessly and it shows. Tight as a frogs behind, they tore through the 2 hour set with such ferocity the hairs on the back of my neck were standing on end the entire show.

The greatest and arguably the most underrated band in the world truly gave us a gift long overdue.

Peaches changed my life back in the day and I have always wanted to see them. It’s taken 40+ years but better late than never. Being a massive Linkin Park fan I am now booking to see anyone I have or do like. You just never know.

I thought The Stranglers were excellent last night. A lot of punk bands have disappointed in the past at live concerts but these guys are top class musicians. That’s why they are in my list of fav bands. I am a regular at the Brixton O2 and I like it as a venue. No more Hero’s ? You will always be my hero’s.

Not the normal show from the boys covered a lot songs that if a life long fan of them would know but if expecting a run through of the normal set people may have left disappointed.I really enjoyed it lost how count on how many times I have seen them a long time since Ive heard Nubiles and when Hugh turned up the bass before no more heroes had the whole place reverberating. Not the best gig I’ve seen from them but still a class act .

50 years of The Stranglers marked with celebratory tour

The Stranglers , one of the most iconic bands in British music, are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year with a short tour of the UK and Ireland.

Since playing their last full-scale UK tour in 2022, the current members of the long-standing punk/new wave collective who have never broken up and reformed like so many other groups – Jean-Jaques Burnel, Baz Warne, Jim Macaulay and Toby Hounsham – thought about how they would like to celebrate this impressive milestone with their fans.

They decided to play a few gigs – including the Cambridge Corn Exchange, a venue they know well.

When we speak, singer/guitarist Baz Warne, who joined the band in 2000, explains that he’s been enjoying some “domesticity” of late.

“I’ve been jet-washing the pavement in my garden and going to the shops, and just being a normal bloke for a few weeks,” he says.

But that followed a big European tour and visits to New Zealand and Australia – and Baz admits he soon gets “itchy” to get back to the music after a quiet spell at home.

The Stranglers’ 2022 tour was a ‘farewell’ of sorts, and the closing of a chapter, in a way – it was the first tour following the passing of long-time keyboard player Dave Greenfield, from heart and Covid-related issues, in 2020.

“It was only farewell in terms of we said that we wouldn’t do large tours anymore,” explains Baz, who is originally from Sunderland.

“There was never any mention of the fact that we would never ever tour again in the UK, which a lot of people seemed to think that we had said.

“We just decided that we weren’t going to do 28, 29, 30-date tours like we used to because it’s very tiring. That the tour happened at all was a miracle because we lost Dave Greenfield in 2020, and the tour was postponed twice – and at the third time of asking we went out and did it.

“The audiences were magnificent, every gig was sold out, and the general consensus was ‘Please don’t say this is the end, please come back if you can’.

“And of course now it’s the 50th so we decided that the only way that we could thank everyone was to go out and play some more concerts.

“So it’s a small-ish tour, as far as we’re concerned, but we’re looking forward to it immensely.”

Although they formed a couple of years before the explosion of punk rock and were influenced by it, The Stranglers went on to create their own unique sound, achieving 25 top 40 singles and 18 top 40 albums, with their most recent LP, 2021’s Dark Matters , reaching number four in the album charts, their highest UK chart position since Feline in 1983.

Their best-known single is of course Golden Brown but other hits include Peaches , No More Heroes , Always the Sun , Big Thing Coming , and Skin Deep .

The band have something of a close association with Cambridge and the Cambridge Corn Exchange, partly because singer/bass player and sole founding member left in the line-up, Jean-Jacques Burnel, used to reside in the area.

“Dave Greenfield lived – and his missus still does live – in the area, in a little village out near St Ives,” reveals Baz, who notes that And If You Should See Dave… , a track off Dark Matters , is a tribute to their much-missed bandmate, “and Cambridge was always their spiritual home, if you like, so the last time we played there was extremely emotional because Dave’s widow was there, looking down on us from above.

“And we could very much feel Dave there, and the audience responded to that… I mean apart from anything, Cambridge is a beautiful place and the Corn Exchange has always been a great gig – we always really look forward to playing there.”

In late 2022, after years of suffering health problems, original Stranglers drummer Jet Black died at the age of 84.

“It was different,” says Baz, “I mean Dave was taken from us in tragic circumstances. It was a huge shock, it was very unexpected – Jet was well into his 80s.

“I was fortunate that I spoke to him about a fortnight before he passed away, I used to speak to Jet pretty much once a month, and it was obvious that when you spoke to him he was an old fella and he was starting to fail.

“But he lived 10 lifetimes – if you and I ever get anything close to what Jet went through… I mean you’ve got to remember when he formed The Stranglers in 1974, he was already 37.

“In the big year of 1977, that everybody keeps harping on about, the ‘year zero’ of punk and all this, Jet was 40 – he’d lived half his life before any of that even started.

“So he was hugely influential to an awful lot of people, and when he passed away he was in the house with his loving wife, in this lovely little bungalow in the hills in Wales.

“He died peacefully at home and I think, given the option, any of us would choose that.”

Dave and Jet will be remembered in this tour and Baz notes that it will be “a celebration of all things Stranglers”.

He adds: “It’s been a long, long ride and it’s nearly a quarter of a century for me. I can still remember the day I went down and auditioned in London in 2000.

“That’s etched in my memory, and I never thought that I would still be here nearly 25 years later, I don’t think anybody did.”

The Stranglers will be performing at the Cambridge Corn Exchange on Wednesday, 20 March. Tickets, priced £40.50 and £50.50, are available at cornex.co.uk . For more on the band, go to thestranglers.co.uk .

The Stranglers // 50 Years In Black Anniversary Tour – Live Review // The Ulster Hall // Belfast

stranglers us tour

The Stranglers – 50 Years In Black – Anniversary Tour , rolls off the tongue but is no mean feat.

What can you say about the impact that a band such as The Stranglers have made on the musical landscape over the last 5 decades, what their music means to those gathered this evening in the hallowed halls of The Ulster Hall.

You can see it far and wide on the faces of those crammed into this iconic venue exactly what it means, smiles far and wide, old friends gathered to celebrate the soundtrack to their youth, and in tow, a youthful generation keen to learn from their wiser and often better-looking elders just how important such a soundtrack is in defining your musical journey ahead.

Tonight is a very special evening indeed, a night of two halves, the first kicking off at 8 pm sharp mostly focused on their most recent recording ‘Dark Matters’ and part two a set packed with classics that get the hearts racing. As we prep for the evening to kick off I scan the room and see the gathered masses huddled in their groups, hugging one another as they catch up with the old crew, back at The Ulster Hall once again reliving their hay-days, Stranglers T-Shirts can be seen far and wide as they await the house lights dropping and the band taking to the stage.

For five decades, The Stranglers have captivated audiences with their distinctive sound, blending punk rock with elements of new wave, post-punk, and beyond. Their music, characterized by raw energy, biting lyrics, and infectious rhythms, has left an indelible mark on the music industry and influenced generations of musicians.

As the lights dimmed, a roar of applause erupted, signalling the band’s arrival. Jean-Jacques Burnel’s bass rumbled through the hall, Baz Warne’s guitar sliced through the air with razor-sharp precision, Toby Hounsham’s keyboards added an ethereal layer, and Jim McAulay’s drums provided the driving force behind it all. Together, they launched into their set with a ferocity that belied their years.

From classics like “No More Heroes” and “Golden Brown” to deeper cuts like “Hanging Around” and “Peaches”, each song was delivered with unwavering intensity, evoking a potent mix of nostalgia and adrenaline. The band’s onstage chemistry was palpable, a testament to their decades-long partnership and mutual respect.

As the night unfolded, The Stranglers took the audience on a journey through their illustrious career, weaving together a tapestry of sonic textures and lyrical poetry. Every chord struck a chord within the crowd, every lyric reverberated with significance.

But it wasn’t just about the music – it was about the memories, the stories, the moments shared between band and fans. It was about the connection forged through music, transcending barriers of time and space.

As the final notes of a 29-song rollercoaster set of musical emotions echoed through the hall, there was a collective sense of euphoria – a celebration of 50 years of defiance, creativity, and passion. The Stranglers had once again proven why they remain one of the most enduring and influential bands in rock history.’

As I stepped out into the cool Belfast night, heart still pounding with the residual energy of the performance, I couldn’t help but feel grateful – grateful for the music that had shaped my life, grateful for the memories made, and grateful for The Stranglers, who had provided the soundtrack to it all. Here’s to another 50 years in black.

CONCERT REVIEW : The Stranglers – Armadillo Glasgow 8th March 2024

stranglers us tour

On a damp night in Glasgow, the first night of The Stranglers Fifty Years in Black Anniversary Tour commenced, marking the opening night with a surge of anticipation. Fans eagerly queued outside the venue, buzzing with excitement and curiosity about what the show would bring. With no support band scheduled, the crowd knew that they were in for a unique experience as The Stranglers prepared to deliver two sets that would undoubtedly leave a lasting impression.

As the lights dimmed, the anticipation grew as the band prepared to take the stage, and the crowd erupted in cheers as they caught their first glimpse of Jean-Jacques Burnel and Baz Warne. Standing alongside Toby Hounsham and Jim MacAulay in the background, the band opened with the powerful tracks “Just Like Nothing on Earth” and “Hallow To Our Men” from their iconic album, The Gospel According to the Meninblack. JJ Burnel addressed the crowd, assuring them that they would soon move past the strange songs of the first set as the haunting chords of “The Raven” reverberated throughout the venue. The setlist was a collection of beloved classics, such as “Baroque Bordello” from the Raven album, as the night became a joyous celebration of the band’s fifty-year anniversary.

Some of the highlights of the first set were truly memorable, starting with the incredible performance of Genetix, followed by the long-awaited live debut of Breathe from the Dark Matters album. The song sounded absolutely amazing and seamlessly blended with the beloved classics from their earlier works. It was evident that both Baz and JJ relished the opportunity to perform it live. The set concluded with the crowd-pleasing Hanging Around and a phenomenal rendition of Down in the Sewer, leaving everyone in awe. It was undeniably a mind-blowing set, filled with numerous musical gems, and executed flawlessly. After such an exhilarating performance, the band took a well-deserved short break before returning for the next set.

The band returned to the stage and immediately delighted the fans with their excellent performance of Waltinblack, which set the perfect tone for the second set. The band was in top form, and the Glasgow fans were left in awe as they witnessed powerful renditions of Who Wants the World, Dagenham Dave, and Duchess, with the venue erupting in full voice. Throughout the second set, standout moments included the captivating performances of Ships That Pass in the Night, Threatened, and Lost Control. The crowd swayed and sang along to favorites like Peaches, Skin Deep, Always the Sun, and Golden Brown.

The atmosphere was electric as the band took the stage, their passion evident in every note they played. Baz’s vocals were nothing short of extraordinary, while JJ showcased his incredible talent with bass chord runs that left the crowd in awe. As the set neared its end, the band delivered a powerful performance of White Stallion from their recent album Dark Matters, followed by fan favourites Tank and Something Better Change from their iconic 1978 albums. The Glasgow crowd immersed themselves in celebrating the band’s fifty years of music, singing along and enjoying every moment. Glasgow demanded an encore as the band left the stage to a roar of anticipation.

After a few minutes, JJ and Baz took their places on stage, ready to begin the encore. They were transported back to where it all began in 1977 with the iconic Rattus Norvegicus album and the timeless Go Buddy Go. As the band declared that this would be their final song, there was no better way to end the show than with No More Heroes, a track from the very same album. The ecstatic fans in Glasgow were fortunate enough to witness their musical heroes tonight, and both the band and the audience savoured every moment of the performance. With heartfelt waves and goodbyes, the band bid farewell to their adoring fans in Glasgow.

Wow, what an opening night of the tour! The Stranglers delivered an unforgettable setlist, and their performance was absolutely second to none. It was evident that tonight was all about celebrating their remarkable 50-year journey, and they certainly threw one big party from the very beginning. If you have the opportunity, make sure to catch them at a venue near you, because this is a night you won’t want to miss.

All the proof Taylor Swift is making first major change to Eras Tour

Welcome to "The Tortured Poets Department" (Eras Tour Version).

stranglers us tour

It looks like Taylor Swift 's Eras Tour is getting a brand new era, straight from the Tortured Poets Department .

Since the announcement of her new 11th studio album ( which dropped April 19 ), fans have been anxiously waiting to see if her worldwide, career-spanning tour would get a shakeup to accommodate the new music. While Swift is remaining mum, and a rep for the singer didn't respond to an EW request for comment, a new YouTube Short posted to Swift's account seems to provide all the clarity Swifties needed that a change is imminent.

In the video, which is part of Swift's #ForAFortnightChallenge tied to the album's first single, "Fortnight," the 14-time Grammy winner can be seen rehearsing for tour with her backup dancers. While some shots are obviously from the Folklore , Lover , and other existing "eras" of the show, several blink-and-you'll-miss-it moments have never been seen before.

In one, Swift, clad in workout gear, appears to be wearing the same boots seen in her "Fortnight" video . She's holding on to a banister that looks like it has the Tortured Poets Department emblem on it — the "P" and the "D" can just be made out.

taylor swift/youtube

Although the video is in grayscale, and therefore exact colors are impossible to identify for sure, several shots feature what looks like a new white-ish mic, which has never been seen before. The new era's color, of course, is also an off-white hue.

Perhaps the most interesting moment of the new clip, though, is one that features what looks like new choreography and costumes. Swift's backup dancers can be seen in top hats and dancing with canes, while she sings in the front middle of the group — choreography and props which have so far not been featured in the concert.

This is all speculative until the tour resumes in Paris, France, on May 9, of course, but if Swift is adding a whole new era, it would mark the first major change to the setlist since Swift began performing it last March.

Throughout the tour, she's made little swaps here or there: She added performances with some of the artists who opened for her like HAIM or Phoebe Bridgers, and she added "Long Live" to the Speak Now section when that re-recorded album released during tour. She also swapped out "Invisible String" for the "The 1" in the Folklore section after news of her split with Joe Alwyn broke.

But, nothing has majorly been added or subtracted from the show, which is already a whopping three-and-a-half hours long. Now, if anyone could pull off adding more runtime to Eras, it's the "Mastermind" herself, but it's more likely that some songs will be getting cut to make room for new material. Fans have theorized that the tracks that didn't make it into the VOD rental of the Eras Tour concert film — "The Archer," "Wildest Dreams," "Cardigan," and "Long Live" — could be first on the chopping block, but we'll just have to wait and see what Ms. Swift has up her cryptic and Machiavellian sleeve.

Charlie Woods’ road to Pinehurst begins Thursday.

Woods, the son of 82-time TOUR winner Tiger Woods, will compete in an 18-hole U.S. Open local qualifier Thursday at The Legacy Golf & Tennis Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida. The younger Woods is slated to tee off at 8:18 a.m. ET Thursday.

The road to the U.S. Open features 109 local qualifying sites across April and May, leading to 13 Final Qualifying sites in late May and early June. Final Qualifying is known as Golf's Longest Day, requiring competitors to navigate 36 holes to earn a tee time at the season’s third major championship.

To be eligible for qualifying, a player must have a Handicap Index not exceeding 0.4 or be a professional.

The elder Woods is a three-time U.S. Open champion, but he has yet to win at Pinehurst No. 2. Tiger Woods finished T3 at Pinehurst in 1999, two strokes back of winner Payne Stewart, and he placed solo second at the venerable venue in 2005, two back of Michael Campbell. He didn’t compete at Pinehurst in 2014.

Earlier this spring, Charlie Woods competed in a pre-qualifier for the TOUR’s Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches, his first foray at attempting to qualify for a TOUR-sanctioned event. The younger Woods shot 86 that day but will look to apply learnings in Thursday’s U.S. Open local qualifier.

Tiger and Charlie Woods have paired together in the last four PNC Championships, the two-player team event contested each December that utilizes a scramble format. Team Woods finished runner-up in 2021 but has yet to win the event.

Other notables in the field at Woods' site include Cameron Kuchar (son of Matt), Sunny Kim, Garrett Willis, Reed Greyserman (brother of Max), Austin Lemieux (son of Mario) and Michael Buttacavoli.

Slight upgrade over last years model. I like the improved lacing system which seems to hug my foot better. I do think last year's Tour 2 had better cushion or "bounce" to the insole. This year's model feels much firmer to me which is disappointing. I was hoping they would soften up after a few rounds but that doesn't seem to be the case so far. Probably wouldn't have bought 3 colors knowing what I know now. ...

Feel the Grip

The all-new Tour Flex Pro from Softspikes® in the key 3 forefoot spike locations and Silver Tornado spikes in the lateral and heel offer exceptional traction in all conditions and give your feet great grip on the ground when you’re going all out for the pin.

All-Round Response

We stitched a Zoom Air unit directly to the upper instead of being set into foam, so it responds to every step. A full-length plate beneath the Air unit helps increase energy return. Cushiony foam under the heel delivers an extremely smooth ride.

Old-School Look

Full-grain leather has a supple feel and sophisticated look, nodding to golf shoes from past generations.

Locked-In Feel

An internal strap stretches over then secures your foot, conforming to its shape.

More Benefits
