Best Real People Airplane Outfit Ideas

Table of contents.

Mastering the right outfit to wear on an airplane is no easy feat. You have the plane climate and destination climate to consider, and you want to still look stylish while feeling comfortable.

One of the key ways I come up with flight outfit ideas is by creating an interchangeable capsule wardrobe . Not only does it help with simplified packing, which can easily fit into a carryon suitcase, but I can revolve what I wear on the airplane to sightseeing, nature excursions, and even nights out on the town.

airplane-outfit

A travel capsule wardrobe should be composed of soft, yet packable fabrics that can compress and be organized into packing cubes . And each item should mix and match with each other, be super versatile, so that means I can pack less but still cover all my activities. And, of course, have nice styling details too!

Anyway, recently I felt moved to think about the best airplane outfit ideas due to people-watching at the airport and noting some real-life travel looks that fit well in capsule wardrobes. (They basically rocked!)

Regardless of your style, we’ve recreated these looks that may spark something in you as well:

  • Easy Comfort
  • Glam Globetrotter
  • Easy Breezy

Best Airplane Outfits for Women

Cardigan |  V-neck |  Leggings  |  Boots  |  Duffel

Easy Comfort Airplane Outfit

This by far is the easiest airport outfit for anyone to duplicate. Easy to wear basics in neutral interchangeable colors plus a few stylish accessories – simple flight fashion!

The perfect formula for an easy to wear comfortable airplane outfit is a classic combo of fitted tee plus leggings. Pair with a cute yet cozy layer such as a long cardigan and shoes that are easy to remove to go through security.

Button Up | V Neck | Jeans  |  Boots  |  Earrings  |  Jacket  |  Suitcase

Editor’s Tip Pick for an Airplane Outfit

This look is definitely for the ultra-glam jetsetter. I saw this airport outfit on a woman as she went through security and I couldn’t help but stare in awe at her elegance and designer style. I’m not sure I could pull this off but cheers to you if you can!

airplane-outfit

Dress  |  Scarf  |  Sandals  |  Handbag

Airplane Outfit for a Beach Vacation

One of the loveliest airplane travel outfit ideas—what a great look if you’re headed to a warm destination! I’d definitely carry a cardigan with me in my personal item for the in-flight chills but this is sexy, sophisticated, and a cool take on this season’s neutral – military green.

airplane-outfit

Boots  | Pants  |  Shirt  |  Jacket  |  Bag |  Carry-On

First Class Airplane Outfit

This outfit is definitely more up my alley, at least when traveling to cities. The one issue is the metal on the jacket and boots but they’re easy to take off as you go through the security line. Totally worth a little effort.

airplane-outfit

Trench  |  T Shirt  |  Denim  |  Trainers | Purse

Casual yet Chic Airplane Outfit

Understated elegance, this classic look seems to be a timeless airport outfit in Europe since I saw women of all ages sporting an ensemble such as this. The trench was EVERYWHERE at Heathrow airport in November and rightfully so. It’s an investment piece that’s sure to stand the test of time. Seriously, one of the top outfits to wear on airplane trips!

airplane-outfit

Boots | Sweater  |  Jeans  |  Coat  | Handbag

Feminine Airplane Outfit

I absolutely love this airplane style outfit and can imagine an epic picture in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The neutral wardrobe is offset by the bold statement coat which is a great travel strategy when traveling in the winter. After all, your pictures will mostly be of you in a coat, why not make it a great one?

airplane-outfit

Trousers  |  Top  |  Boots

Boho Cozy Airplane Outfit

This look took me by surprise but I really like the unexpected combination. Easy to wear, comfortable pieces with weather-friendly boots , and a few key boho pieces that exude editorial-worthy confidence. Love it!

My Best Airplane Outfits

Now that we’ve given you some real-people inspiration, check out some of my favorite flying outfit ideas from yore, along with the seasons I wore them!

Wearing my All Saints leather iacket with Delsey Suitcase during my flight to Thailand

Fall can be a tricky time of year. I try to avoid going full-on winter and in this case, I was traveling to Thailand during October, so knew I’d shed things like scarves for an airy tank top upon landing.

I love this look because it’s clean and easy to put together. The pants have a give and the coat is fitted but I can move my elbows and arms with ease.  A scarf is particularly topical for fall because when there’s a slight chill it instantly warms me up.

My flight from US to England with All Saints leather jacket , | Ankle Boots ( similar ),  Delsey suitcase and Rebecca Minkoff backpack

While I tend to wear simple colors, I still like a bit of rock n’ roll edge to my look every so often!

For this airplane outfit, I was traveling during the wintertime from the US to England and wanted some warmth, so I wore a leather jacket and layered a shirt underneath that. I then put on my fave jeans and then slid in some funky low-heeled ankle boots. I was comfy and cozy I tell you!

airplane-outfit

Blouse | Spanx Leggings | Tory Burch Flats | Longchamp Tote | Delsey Suitcase

This beauty is my new fave airplane outfit that’s awesome for spring (or early fall)!

The look is super stylish but seriously comfortable. I prefer movement and stretch in my pants when I fly and these Spanx faux leather leggings have give in the elastic waistband and knee area. They’re kinda my go-to’s now!

airplane-outfit

Spanx Moto Leggings | Ankle Boots ( similar ) | Delsey Suitcase | Nomad Lane Bento Bag

Good flight shoes are a must so I seek out flexible flats, comfy boots,  or slip-ons that don’t pinch my feet and can be easily removed through security. These Tory Burch Minnie flats were a new buy and so surprisingly comfy and I walked from terminal to terminal with no problems!

Check out reviews for both the Tory Burch Minnie flats and the Spanx faux leather leggings !

Wearing Spanx leggings and black ankle boots as my favorite airplane outfit

Editor’s Winter Favorite: All-Black Chic Airplane Outfit

This is by far, my FAVORITE and best outfit for airplane travel during the winter! It’s warm and layered, so I can take things off/on when needed, and I still feel fashionable.

I was actually going from cold to warm weather, so I wore my heaviest items on the plane and changed once I arrived at my destination of Bonaire. And when I say “heavy” that refers to my coat and boots.

The secret to a capsule wardrobe is to include packable items. My coat is Anatomie, it’s well made and can compress down fairly well, and my boots were a little bulkier but I always look for ones that are as lightweight as possible. And these ones are waterproof so it can handle the elements and still look cute!

Feel free to check out the best waterproof ankle boots for more inspiration!

airplane-outfit

Jacket (similar) | Top (similar) |  Pants (similar) | Slip-ons (similar) | Messenger Bag

I wore this when I hit Europe in the summertime and it was a durable, adorable ensemble I remember fondly!

For me, it’s important to have a comfy flight outfit, and I usually re-wear the same outfit for travel days thereafter, whether I’m flying or taking a train. If I’ve really nailed down an outfit that works for me, then it’s a keeper!

I swear by using lightweight pants and jacket   . It has lightweight fabrics that don’t retain moisture so I feel airy in hot climates. For a top, the sleeveless blouse comes with me for every summer trip! It’s comfortable and breathable, and I can layer it with a cardigan or light jacket if need be.

Again, shoes need to feel right, on or off a flight, and I discovered these Skechers Mary Jane slip-ons ( which are now sold out but here’s a similar one ) because readers raved about them for years! Their memory foam insole means my feet feel cushioned all the time!

More of My Airplane Outfits

I hope you found these cute airplane outfits motivating to begin piecing together your own personal capsule wardrobe that can move from “up in the air” to “on the ground!”

airplane-outfit

Aside from the wardrobe choices above, what stood out above all was that all these travelers had freshly styled hair and makeup, which really adds the finishing touch to even the most casual of airport ensembles. Don’t forget that a good blow dry and mascara goes a long way!

I love these travel outfit ideas! I want to be comfy when I travel, but I also want to look cute and not lazy or sloppy. These outfit ideas are just what I need to help me put together the perfect travel outfit for myself!

Diana Janisbel

Wait! Thanks so much for sharing these outfit ideas, it feels so easy to recreate when you have it with pictures like this. I travel a lot and my outfits can be hit or miss haha

Heidi Quan

Love these polished yet comfy outfit suggestions. So key to be comfortable yet still stylish even when traveling on those long haul flights. Love them all.

Cathleen

Most of my flights are between the US and Southeast Asia – so I’m usually just focused on how to be as comfortable as possible for 30+ hours. I love Vuori joggers (so soft!!) and a tank top for if I get hot with a jacket for if I get cold. I do need to step up my game when I fly in the States so I appreciate all the stylish ideas!

tammi

So many cute options. Thank you for sharing both the suggestions as well as some personal examples. It’s always fun to get new ideas of combinations that will look cute and travel well.

Michele Smith

Luv this article! I have followed travel fashion girl for several years. I found a video on U-tube on how to pack for 10-days in Europe using a carry-on bag. Guess what? It worked. Have been using capsule wardrobe concept ever since. I use solid hair products at home too. Always great to see the latest thoughts on fashion forward looks.

Amy Hanley

This is so helpful! I am very impressed by those that can wear upscale, polished blazers, jeans and dresses when traveling. I appreciate that you have practical but stylish options for us leggings and cardigan sweater gals! Wish the Skechers slip ones were still in stock.

Amy Fowler

Love wearing my go-to and heavier items on the plane – jean jacket, white tennies for spring/summer, and Chelsea boots for fall/winter. Always bring a layering piece in my personal bag, and tie a scarf on my personal bag too. The temp always seems to fluctuate between boarding and in flight, so it’s nice to have options.

Avagail

My go-to outfit is leggings and a merino wool t-shirt – super casual, but I want to step up my airport outfits so this post was super helpful with ideas!

Jill

I love all of these outfits! To me, the airport is one of the best things about travel and I look forward seeing, walking, exploring as much of it as I can. Therefore, the most important part of the travel outfit are the comfortable shoes!

Ellen

I’m all about comfort on an airplane. These suggestions are great!

Karen

Taking my first International trip in a few months. I’ve never taken a night flight and didn’t know what to wear since we arrive in the morning and will be on the go right away! These choices are all so helpful! Now to only decide, I love them all!

Darcy Hartman

I recently bought a couple of pairs of Old Navy high waisted power soft wide leg pants in navy and in black. These have been perfect for travel. Super comfy on the plane, and they look nice enough for conferences. I love all your looks here!

Christine Ince

So many great tips! I’ve used your packing lists to successful pack for a two week Italy vacation in a carryon. I was able to put together plenty of fashionable interchangeable outfits and I’m so grateful that I packed light! My red eye travel outfit was perfect and included layers. A tank, lightweight linen tee, scarf that doubled as a blanket, and a pair of athleta Brooklyn heights joggers. Their joggers and trousers are perfect for flying.

Ann Rumberger

Love seeing all these options! Such variety for any style of airline travel and any type of style. Great inspiration.

Angela Young

Thanks for this article! Having had flight cancellations where I ended up in the same clothes for a couple days, I always think about what outfit would serve me well – versatile, comfortable, and will look okay a bit mussed or wrinkled… These outfits look chic and fit my style, too. Thank you!

Bryanna

Thank you for this article, super helpful and I completely agree! More and more I’m learning about capsule wardrobes and how important they are!

Patricia Hellrung

Great ideas for travel outfits…comfort and style. Using a lot of these ideas for my Fall European trip! Appreciate all the great tips

Karen Clements

I love all of these ideas for outfits to wear when flying on a plane. Two of my favorite pairs of pants to wear for flying are a pair of Quince linen pants which I purchased upon recommendations from readers of Travel Fashion Girl and also the Eddie Bauer Departure pants. I get so may great ideas for clothing and what to pack, etc. from these blogs.

Caryn Goode

I love all these options. I struggle with choosing an airport outfit with pieces I can wear again. Thank you!

Jill Hauwiller

Love all these great options!

Georgia Small

I’ve learned so many great tips from TFG as well as the TFG Facebook group. Thanks so much for all that you do.

Lynne

Great ideas. I always layer because I am always hot, but then it can get cold in the airport or plane!

Lynn Pike

What to wear on the plane, especially a long haul vacation, is always a challenge. Stylish yet comfortable, easy to wear yet not sloppy, arriving at your destination not looking like you have spent hours in the plane. Loved the outfits by season! This site never disappoints! What a gem 💎 ✨️!

Lisa Parker

I love all of these, especially the understated elegance. You have such beautiful taste and have inspired me, not only with my travel wardrobe, but also in my everyday wardrobe!

Beth Theisen

I love this blog post and go back to it often depending on where I am going. You make planning for travel so much fun, and a different sort of adventure for certain. I also love spotting fellow TFG travelers by their airplane outfits as well.

Tammy

Love these ideas!! I am traveling out of the country for the first time next month and, thanks to TFG, I have put together my perfect outfit! I will be comfortable and well put together. Ordering the last piece today (also a TFG recommendation). Love this site!!

Gwen

Love these ideas. Always looking for ways to be comfortable flying, while also looking stylish.

Melissa A (Missie) Berreth

What fantastic ideas! I always struggle the most with plane outfits because I want comfort but don’t want to look sloppy or old! Thank you for doing all the legwork for us!

Love these ideas! Thank you for sharing.

Kim Hoffman

It’s always a challenge finding items that travel well, are comfortable, and leaving you looking “pulled together” after a flight. These are great ideas – thanks!

Marianne Livengood

Loved all of your airplane outfits. Going to South Africa and looking for comfy outfits for 15 hour flight. Great ideas. Thanks.

Cathleen Huckaby

You ROCK! This ‘1-stop’ travel trove of wisdom, REAL-life help, and tips is a God-send! I’ve ordered many items you & other readers recommend (espec. on major holidays/Black Fri. sales). As a woman on a budget it’s a bit tough w/ all the expenSive sites (Nordstroms, JC Crew) so I appreciate you adding “Quince” as they seem to cut out the middleman/advertising. As the founder of a charity every dollar counts, thus a $340 trench coat is out, yet on Quince it’s much much less (& they have free returns!) I just ordered my 1st item from Quince & looking forward to wearing it as you highly recommended it! Thanks for ALL you do, Cathleen (RN)

Michelle

Love all the outfits! Is there an updated plus size article for the over age 60 group.

Linh Chin-Lai

I have my favorite airplane outfit: long pants (lightweight for summer, heavier for winter), sleeveless top, cardigan, tennis shoes with low rise socks.

Carol Askew

This is a post that I keep coming back to again and again every time I travel. I have recommended this blog and Facebook group to many of my friends. I consider the Facebook group to be the single most helpful group that I am in. Of course I do live and love to travel lol.

Saby Herrera

I’m always looking for airport outfit ideas! Love all the different options and styles. Thanks for sharing!

Nancy Jo Tschida

I love the variety of options too as well as the total look that includes everything to create the outfits even lipstick.

Lauren Andrea Morgan

I love this post. Especially the black and blue with leather jacket. I love options for women of all ages and sizes. I can never color coordinate, so I appreciate the ideas!!

Nancy Y Buchanan

I honestly think the “airplane” outfit is the hardest one of all – LOL!! Since I’m west coast based all my flights to Europe are 10+ hours so… a VERY long day of travel! The Easy Comfort” outfit is definitely my style – cute, comfortable and practical since it features two bulky and hard to pack wardrobe items – a long cardigan and boots! A variation of this look is going to be my choice when traveling to London and Croatia next spring!

Ilene Smith

Always love your ideas! I find that my travel outfits change based on where I’m going and what I’m doing once I arrive. But often some iteration of what you’re showing.

Sinéad Shah

I travel in Athleta Brooklyn pants that I found because of this site. They dress up or down and are super comfortable and also can be washed in the shower and dry overnight. Awesome travel staple

Teri Naiser

While I have yet to do a carry-on-only trip, I’ve learned so many valuable tips from your site! I now have the best travel pants and a wardrobe capsule that mixes and matches beautifully! Thanks for all you do!

Tammy Fellows

All of these are great options, thank you! Soooo much nicer looking and just as comfy as some of the traveling outfits I see at my job as a flight attendant! Love your ideas!

Tobi-Velicia

I love these outfit options! I usually wear a short DVF wrap dress with leggings and shoes that are easy to slip on and off for travel. But I definitely want to try a few of these amazing looks.

Sherri Killam

I have followed Travel Fashion Girl for some time and I cannot even tell you how many times I have read about the best shoes for travel and the best bags (handbags, backpacks) that are secure and stylish. It is because of you that I discovered Travelon. This post about what to wear on the plane with accompanying photos really hits home. We are traveling to Europe at the end of this week and I had vacillated between wearing stretchy Ponte pants that unfortunately have not pockets and blue jeans. After reading some posts on Facebook and seeing these pictures (and knowing how much I rely on pockets), the jeans have won out. Plus, not having to pack them will reduce the weight in my suitcase. Please know that even those of us who are not very chatty usually are reading and enjoying TFG and are very thankful for this resource. May all your journeys be happy ones.

Colleen Hackett

I’ve been following Travel Fashion Girl for some time and love all the tips and real life scenarios. I’m in my 60’s and am mostly into being comfortable with some fashion thrown in. I love that the styles shown are for the younger women all the way up to us traveling seniors! I can always find something here that works for me.

Cheryl Finley

I bought the tee and joggers from Sexy Modest Boutique. I have traveled in them for the past year. They are comfortable, breathable, and I can create different looks with jackets, shoes, scarves, etc…I have black in both pieces. When worn together it looks like a jumpsuit which I like, but I also use each piece with my other clothing to create outfits, so they are part of my capsule. I just recently traveled to Europe and was very comfortable on the long flights (felt like pjs).

Gwen Pinkston

I’ve been looking at these. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on wearing for travel.

Beth Williams

I love this post! So informative and the photos make such a difference in seeing how it all works together.

Liz

I tend to wear long dresses on flights. That way my legs are covered if it’s cold but also, I’m not too hot when I get off the plane. My go to has Spaghetti straps that I paid with a cardigan or jean jacket. That is the ultimate in comfort for me!

Christine Butkiewicz

I’ve been following Traveling Fashion Girl for the past year. Joined the group after my husband surprised me with a trip to Italy. Love to travel but struggle with overpacking and never seeming to be able to put together an outfit. Your blog has been soooo helpful and I’ve learned so much! Thank you for all the interesting information and truly helpful advice!!! Love it!

Zoe Green

I love everything about Travel Fashion Girl! The tips on packing and clothing are spot on. So glad to have found you. Keep traveling!

Loredana Ragone

Your blogs and fb group have helped me be a better Travel Fashion Girl, thank you so much for your advice and suggestions! I love this community.

Sarah Dorn

I wear a lounge set from Duluth Trading Co. on long-haul flights. It’s a tank top with a built-in bra, it’s very comfortable! It’s a monochromatic look so it looks chic.

Cindy Merrill

Such cute outfits! I am inspired to get some new travel outfits!

Jennifer Bennett

I’m definitely an easy comfort kind of traveler, haha. My go-to’s are either Fabletics leggings or Anatomie pants (always stretch!) with 2-3 layers on top, typically a tank or tee with a long sleeve shirt or sweater over and optional scarf because I am always cold on the plane but hot in the airport. I’m an options girl for sure! I do try to style up with my tops though so I look put together vs frumpy.

Jane Bitsicas

So many good ideas. I love having a pulled together travel look, rather than just any old sweats and t-shirts that I see so much of. That way I can hit the ground running when I arrive and not have to change.

Kathleen Weissenberger

I have read and re-read so many of the blog posts. I have purchased a few items from the FB group and the TFG favorites…and I had considered myself a well seasoned frequent travel expert!

Anel Muterspaugh

The easy comfort type is the way to go for me. I mostly travel with kids si ability to be comfortable is key. Joggers, loose T-shirt, cardigan or jacket and running shoes.

Peggy Workman

Every year I fly at least once to Europe and once to Hawaii from KY. At 72, I’ve discovered that my favorite flying outfit is is midi length sleeveless black jersey dress with knee length slits on both side seams. Flexible enough to wear as a jumper, or wear it with a scarf, add a sweater, or a jacket, or a pull over sweater. It’s easier to use the toilet on an airplane but pulling something up then pulling down pants and attempting to keep them off the bathroom floor.

Ronnell Crowder

Wish more of the travel clothes came in tall.

Suzie

Thank you for elevating the idea of what’s appropriate for travel. With so many options, it’s possible to be comfortable and pulled together. It always amazes me to see what fellow travelers wear to board an airplane….and not usually in a good way 😞 Those who take the time to look nice stand out in a positive way, and that’s what I aspire to. So grateful for all of the resources here!!

GG

As someone who wears skirts 300 days of the year, I always have trouble with my airplane outfit- how to style pants?! Thanks for the inspiration!

Rose Trasatti

Love these tips plus all the others you post!

Nikki

Where is that chunky silver necklace from?

Alex

Hi Nikki, it’s from By Aris. I loooooooove their metal jewelry so much!!!! And they evenmade this custom necklace for me and named it after me. 😊 The “Alexandra” necklace: https://byaris.com/products/alexandra-necklace/

Dianne Wendling

Love your blog and all the Facebook group ideas and recommendations!!

Tiffany Cline

Great suggestions. After many years I have finally come up with my go to airport outfit. Long sleeve or short sleeve stripe tee, cardigan or blazer, black comfy pants and loafers with a scarf!

Catherine Lewis

Hello – Thank you! Trying to figure out exactly which long grey cardigan that is in first pic…the Amazon link shows several.

Hi Catherine, I have had a look for you but unfortunately it looks like this cardigan is sold out.

We do have more options on this post which you might like: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/best-cardigans-for-women/

Elaine

I am flying Tuesday night to Sweden for a 2 week road trip. Your article helped me choose my “flying” outfit from my Classic 12 piece capsule. Thanks to you and all your readers for taking the anxiety out of packing for my first trip since before Covid.

Cary

Love the Casual and Chic look featured above. Comfort with a pop of color!

Susan

Thank you for giving me inspiration for my airplane outfit. I have been working on it for the past month or so . . . I like to be stylish, yet comfortable. Since it will be a long 36 hours of flying/travel time, I will be changing to some comfy wide leg pants for the overnight leg, but plan on being more stylish for the first part wearing my EB black Ponte pants, Departure 2.0 long sleeve white shirt, and jean jacket. Still deciding on which shoes to wear!

Christina

Jeans are not the best thing to wear on a plane. There are lots of comfy trousers with flexibility and look a heck of a lot better. Open toes is a no-no, loafers or boots better choice for footwear. Otherwise, thanks for posting cute travel outfits for all of us!

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us Christina! ?

Carol Anne Gartland

I love all of these ideas. I do not know if I am just old-school or still believe in fairytales, but I always try and be comfortable while chic. Using my Delsey Chatelet bag ( recommended by TFG) and a faux leather backpack, I keep thinking I will be invited to First Class for a glass of champagne. lol

M

I found scarves to be a TSA tag. They ask me to remove, so they know you’re not carrying something around your neck. Even a bandanna.

Thank you for sharing your travel experiences with us!

Natalie

I like the boots in the Editor’s Tip Pick for an Airplane Outfit. They are black with buckles. Can you send the exact link to find these?

Hi Natalie, I am sorry about this but unfortunately the boots featured were the Ugg Simmens boots which have recently become unavailable. They are similar in style to the Ugg Wilde boots featured here: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/best-waterproof-boots/ We are looking to update many of our articles so thank you for bring this to our attention. I am sorry we could not have been of more help ?

Thank you for the other options. Going on an Alaskan cruise and I was told to have waterproof shoes due to the fact it rains a lot.

Hi Natalie, so pleased I was able to help! ? If you need any more tips to help with packing for your cruise, we also have this article: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/what-to-pack-for-alaska-cruise-in-august/ Have an amazing time! ?

Mary

Do have any suggestions/articles for international (long haul flights) fashion?

Mrs C

I love sleeveless, soft cotton midi dresses with a cardigan or blazer and sneakers. We fly to Italy often, so I like to look decent. I learned my lesson about wide leg pants: They touch the floor when using the bathroom! For that reason, when wearing pants, it’s best to wear skinnies or leggings.

Hi there, thank you for sharing your go-to travel outfit with us, sounds comfortable and stylish!!! Happy travels ?

Bessie Brown Lewis

Thanks for that nugget about the wide leg pants. Will save them for a night out for our trip.

Grace Crussiah

Agree about wide leg pants. Slim or regular leg pants work for flights too.

Patti

Loved the article, always looking for ways to add a little style to my airplane standbys. Whose says you can’t look good and fly?

alex

Exactly 😉 Thanks Patti!

Jolie Johnsen

Thank you for the wardrobe inspo. The air travel outfit ideas are brilliant!

Dot Higgins

I always travel in quality knits that will keep their shape. The picture at the top of the article looked very unrealistic. If I was wearing that tucked-in cloth blouse, I’d be a wrinkled, sloppy, uncomfortable mess at the end of a 7+ hour flight. Short hops are one thing, but I’ve yet to see someone look so fresh after a trans-continental flight.

Great point Dot! These outfits are only based on people I saw in London so I can’t really be sure of how long they were traveling. Thanks for the feedback!

Linda Goodfellow

Nice!! I loved every one of these outfits.

Thanks Linda!

Julia K

love the military green outfit! so chic and looks comfy..

alex

Awesome! Glad you found one you like!

Elizabeth Jones

My favourite! I always wear a dress…mid calf next time. Cardi, trench, rope low wedge sandals. Soo comfy, smart for any age! Dress is always loose fitting.

Wendy

Any suggestion on where to get the striped wide-leg pants? The link isn’t working.

Hi Wendy! How about these? http://bit.ly/22T8DMk

Claire Sparks

Love the pictures of you at St. Pancras Station in London. Love all the outfits but especially the pink ensemble for Paris.

Thank you Claire! 🥰

Kathy Peters

Can’t wait to get ready and travel light for my upcoming trip to Croatia. Thank you for all the great tips!

Kate

I’m definitely a cross between easy comfort, french and rocker chic when I travel. Comfort if key, but I would prefer not to look like a slob.

There are so many comfortable clothes available, no need to go to the airport in sweats 😉

Rhonda

Since I don’t check luggage, my first rule is to wear the heaviest clothes. So for my flight from US to Europe in a few weeks, that means jeans, a sweater, and boots. I wish I could wear yoga pants to facilitate sleeping on the overnight flight!

Why not carry your yoga pants in your carryon and change out of your jeans before you board the flight? Or wear leggings under your jeans and then remove them? 😉

Irene

I’m traveling from Alaska to Spain and I would shoot myself if i had to travel in tight uncomfortable, deep vein thrombosis inducing jeans 🙂 Pack lighter and leave your jeans in the carryon. Wear leggings on the plane. The difference in weight is minimal.

Hi Irene, do you dive in Alaska? I ask because of your email 🙂 I love scuba diving so that sounds incredible!

Sandy

Some lovely outfits esp like the pink. But, I wonder how did they manage , fine on the way out, but what about when they arrived….have you seen how small the plane cubicles are, and how long the impatient queues on board can be when travelling ‘cattle class’?

With the exception of the Glam Globetrotter they all seemed pretty easy to get in and out of. They’re all mostly just a nicer version of jeans and tee 😉

Theresa

I love to ear comfortable but classy outfit in the plane. I have scored some upgrades a. Because I asked nicely and b. Because I looked like I was a perfect fit for Business or First Class. White London shirt and blazer or trench. Black pants and either nice loafers or boots. A scarf or pashmina. Fresh make up and hair coiffed.

Sounds like the perfect first class look!

Sara

LOVE the ideas! The military green outfit is tres chic and I can’t get over that pink coat. <3

Thanks Sara!

Michelle

I’m the Easy Comfort type, although I really enjoy being all dressed up (especially for short trips). But on a flight, especially a longer one, I prefer to be comfortable…

It would be nice to travel in glamorous outfits like celebrities but how do they deal with the lack of comfort?

Zoe

Maybe they change into pyjamas for the actual flight?! Not to mention the use of stylists before getting to the arrivals hall of the airport!

My recent autumn/winter travelling outfit of choice is a grey marl jersey dress with 3/4 length sleeves, which I wear with thermal tights (from Marks & Spencer’s) and a merino wool cardigan or sweater. I don’t bother with many accessories when travelling, apart from a scarf – and obviously a coat and gloves/hat if I’m outdoors! This outfit has really worked well for me, even on an uncomfortable overnight long haul flight that was delayed by 3 hours!

Most of the outfits looked pretty comfortable…with the exception of the “Glam Globetrotter” outfit that is! The jewelry, hair, and makeup made the biggest difference from casual to chic. Sounds like we have a similar winter travel outfit – comfortable dress plus tights!

Solange

Wish I could find the ARMY Green Dress for the Beach Vacation. It’s EXACTLY what I’ve been lookn for.

10 Summer Airplane Travel Outfit Ideas

Summer Airplane Travel Outfit Ideas

Summer isn’t over quite yet! I still have a couple more trips on the horizon as I round out my summer plans (ciao Italia!) so I’m currently deep in outfit and trip planning and ensuring I have my favorite travel items packed. Traveling during the summer is such a blast, but it can also be crazy/hectic/HOT/stressful. Anyone else remember the travel debacle that was Summer 2022? When it comes to getting your vacation off on the right foot, I think picking the right airplane travel outfit is key. When you feel comfortable, cozy, and stylish you can sit back and relax. Today I’m sharing a round-up of comfortable but stylish airplane travel outfits for the summer season.

1. T-Shirt Dress and Denim Jacket

A classic airplane outfit! You really can’t go wrong with a comfy t-shirt dress and a denim jacket. I find it’s great to travel in your heavier/bulkier items (like a denim jacket or leather jacket) so you don’t have to worry about stuffing them in your suitcase.

2. Matching Set

For those flights when you’re worried about freezing in the air conditioning, a cozy matching set is just the ticket! I think dressing in a monochromatic color scheme helps make you look a bit more pulled together.

3. Midi Skirt and Sneakers

If you’re hopping off the plane and getting right to a vacation activity, I think a midi skirt (with a stretchy waistband for comfort!) with some cute sneakers is great look.

4. Jeans and T-Shirt

For a short flight, I think a classic jeans and tee outfit is so chic! Wear closed to shoes for the plane and pack a cute pair of sandals in your carryon to easily switch up the look when you get to your destination.

5. Workout Set

If stretch and comfort are your main priorities, I think a workout set can be great for airplane travel. Plus, you can easily add or remove layers depending on the temperature.

6. Midi Dress and Light Jacket

A dress that covers most of your legs can be great for warmth on the airplane, plus a light jacket for an extra layer. Shed the jacket when you arrive at your destination and you’re summer ready!

7. Trousers and T-Shirt

For a more polished alternative to a matching sweatsuit set, I think soft and comfy trousers with a t-shirt is a great option. Choose your fabric depending on your travel destination to ensure you can mix and match.

8. Smocked Dress

Traveling in a smocked dress is great for summer because it’s cute, stretchy, and wrinkles minimally! Plus, you’ll probably be the best dressed person on the plane. Hill House dresses are some of my favs!

9. Cropped T-Shirt and Leggings

Another classic airport outfit! A cropped t-shirt and leggings is easy to reach for when you have no idea what to wear. Add a chic ball cap or cute jacket to take the outfit up a notch.

10. Printed Dress

When you’re en route to somewhere fabulous, I think the occasion calls for a fun printed dress! Plus, you’ll be able to re-wear upon arrival.

These 7 Outfits Master Summer Airport Style

Look fresh straight off the plane with these fashion editor-approved styling hacks.

How to Pick an Airport Outfit This Summer

Lauren Tappan

My friends and I planned a week-long getaway to Costa Rica, and I've got a full packing list of trendy bikinis , airy linen pants , and breezy beach dresses , but one of the most important and often overlooked travel staples is a great summer airport outfit. Planning that outfit ahead can ensure the trip gets off to a smooth start as you get dressed in the dark for a 5 am flight. It's one less thing to think about—whether you're headed off on a fun girls' trip or headed into more serious business matters.

Heading to a vacation destination is usually a bit more forgiving than traveling for work, which can be one of the biggest wardrobe puzzles. Traveling for business often requires you to head straight off the plane into a busy day of meetings. But that doesn't mean you have to dress in stiff, uncomfortable business attire. With smart outfit formulas and a few wardrobe workhorses, you'll be equipped with several foolproof looks you can wear repeatedly— even if you're a frequent flyer.

If you're traveling through different climates, pack an extra layer—like a lightweight cardigan or a cashmere wrap—that you can easily throw over your shoulders when you arrive and will keep you from freezing on chilly planes. Going on a quick weekend trip that doesn’t require a huge checked bag? Bringing a large tote can be a great organizational hack for storing your smaller bags through crowded terminals and winding TSA lines.

From oversized blazers paired with T-shirts and sleek leggings to matching sweat sets styled with summer's trending chunky sneakers , Marie Claire's curated seven do-it-all airport outfits that have street-style and celebrity seals of approval.

  • Lightweight Layers

Although you're bound to experience balmy weather during a day of summer travel, you'll likely encounter chilly temperatures as soon as you step foot in the airport (and even more so while seated in the aircraft cabin). That's why it's essential to pack a lightweight layering piece like a knit cardigan , a fleece hoodie , or a soft crewneck sweatshirt.

  • Comfortable Fabrics

Between navigating airport security, speeding through terminals, and tracking down your luggage at baggage claim, a travel day usually means getting your steps in. That said, you'll want to wear comfortable fabrics (especially on the bottom) that will allow you to get around easily. Soft leggings, cotton sweatpants , and linen trousers are all great options to incorporate into your summer airport outfit formula.

  • Supportive Footwear

The airport is not the place to experiment with pointy stilettos or sky-high platforms (if you must wear heels, pack them in your carry-on bag and slip them on as soon as you land). Instead, choose cushioned sneakers, sandals with arch support, and supportive flats— ballet flats are a great option that checks all of the boxes.

woman wearing white T-shirt, leggings, and cardigan

Prioritize comfort while wearing a cozy T-shirt and a pair of stretchy leggings.

The most versatile summer airport outfit involves two simple essentials: a T-shirt and a pair of leggings . I've worn this look time and again to get through long travel days, and it never fails. Whether sprinting to catch my plane or moving around an aircraft during a long-haul flight, I can always rely on a fitted tee and a pair of forgiving pants to provide easy mobility— and to sleep in if I need to. Elevate this look by wrapping a cardigan across your shoulders, popping on a pair of chunky hoops , and grabbing a large carry-on that's roomy enough to store all the in-flight essentials.

Cotton Rib T-Shirt

When You're Short on Time

woman wearing grey sweatsuit set

There's something about a matching sweat set that feels super polished, especially when styled with chic black accessories.

A comfortable sweatsuit can do no wrong, especially on days when you don't have much time to plan your airport look. A monochromatic approach keeps the look polished and won't require much extra styling. Anchor a light neutral matching set with contrasting black accessories, like a versatile crossbody bag and a pair of sleek sunglasses. Pro Tip: Wear a tank top beneath your hoodie in case you need to shed a layer.

Accolade Hoodie

Straight From the Plane to Meetings

woman wearing blue top, beige trousers, and a blue cardigan

For the business traveler who must look chic at all times, you'll appreciate this outfit.

Traveling for work instead of leisure? If so, your post-flight day will likely be packed with client coffees or business lunches; unfortunately, sweatpants and leggings won't cut it. You'll want more of the Nicole Kidman airport outfit approach. Count on a pair of tailored trousers , a fitted middle layer, and an outer sweater to look polished but not stuffy. Pair the look with pointed-toe flats and ladylike accessories— like pearl earrings.

The Favorite Pant Pleated Wide Leg Pants

For the Weekend Trip

woman wearing T-shirt, white pants, and white sneakers

Graphic T-shirts are undeniably fun. Wear yours to the airport with a pair of flowy pants to match.

A playful design, like a graphic tee, can add an element of fun to any pared-down airport outfit. Play with proportion with a loose-fitting T-shirt and a flowy pair of pants that feel relaxed but capture your personal style— you can also re-wear these pieces for a short weekend trip. Pack a sweater or light denim jacket in your carry-on or weekend bag to have you have an extra layer for the plane.

New York Tee

From Landing Straight to Lunch

woman wearing crew neck top, jeans, and flip flops

Wearing jeans to the airport feels like a cardinal sin, but it doesn't have to be.

Okay, I know what you’re thinking: Who wears jeans on an airplane? Yes, you can easily incorporate denim into your summer airport outfit—just opt for an oversized or relaxed silhouette. Pair the look with an oversized sweatshirt and easy slip-on slide sandals. Head straight to lunch with your friends— no change necessary.

Classic Crew Sweatshirt

A Fuss-Free Sightseeing Look

woman wearing black tank top, white pants, and white sneakers

A simple yet chic look will easily take you from the airport to the streets of your destination.

If you've got a bunch of sightseeing lined up on your itinerary as soon as you land, your outfit will have to master versatility–comfy enough to wear on the plane yet stylish enough for a day of strolling through museums, restaurants, and promenades. A black tank top, a pair of lightweight pants, and white sneakers will get the job done. Opt for a leather backpack to keep your hands free.

Naomi Tank Top

From Warm to Cold Climates (Or Vice Versa)

woman wearing rain coat, white pants, and flats

A chilly destination calls for layers.

Not all summer vacations are tropical. In fact, some of us are opting for chilly destinations to escape grueling temperatures. For this type of trip, the right outerwear is absolutely key. A sturdy trench coat is a great choice to provide warmth without taking up space on the plane. If you're traveling from a warm to cold climate, style your trench with an all-white outfit and neutral accessories.

If your summer travels are taking you on a long-awaited family vacation to the beach or a national park, an international trip, a family reunion, or a wedding, packing the right pieces for your summer trip is key to having a good time and feeling good in your skin!

Pack for your itinerary and what you’ll be doing

Before you head out on summer vacation,  research the spoken and unspoken dress codes for your hotel and travel destination. Especially if you’re traveling to a new country, you want to make sure you’re packing clothes that are appropriate.

Then consider what you’ll be doing from day to day. If you’re taking day trips in the summer months and will be away from your hotel for 10 hours, it’s likely you’ll need to consider weather and temperature changes and dress in layers. You may need an outfit that’s versatile enough that you can easily transition between dressier and more casual venues.

Pack with your personal style in mind

If you’re all about neutrals, stripes, or colorful pieces at home, you want to feel like yourself on vacation. Pack what you love and also keep in mind that neutrals are the most versatile pieces and easiest to mix and match.

In this post, learn what to wear on a long flight, get a thoughtful packing list, and travel tips galore, plus see 12 outfit formulas to use as outfit inspiration.

What is a good outfit to travel on a plane in?

When you’re going on long-haul flights, comfort is essential. Here’s a never-fail outfit formula for traveling on a plane. Choose comfortable pants with an elastic waistband, a short-sleeve t-shirt, a removable button-down shirt or cardigan with long sleeves, your travel jacket, socks, and your bulkiest shoes.

Wear your bulkiest items like a jacket and sneakers so you don’t take up space with them in your suitcase.

When you’re walking to your gate, your body temperature rises so tie your jacket around your waist or loop it through your tote bag or carry-on bag so you won’t overheat so much. Stow your jacket in the overhead compartment when you board the plane.

Dress for maximum comfort. Avoid tight buttoned pants that cut into your waist or hug you tightly at the knees or ankles. Choose wide-leg pants in soft fabrics, with elastic or drawstring waistbands. Or go for comfortable workout pants. Or a pair of leggings and an oversized top.

Dress so you’re not too hot and not too cold on the flight. The average temperature on an airplane is between 71 and 75 degrees F . Your body temperature is hotter when you first board the plane. And the cabin can get warm when you’re sitting on the runway. The plane cools off once you take off and your body temperature cools while you’re sitting. Be ready for hot and cool temperatures by wearing pants, a short sleeve t-shirt with a removable long-sleeve shirt, or a cardigan sweater. Wear shoes you can easily slide on and off at the airport security checkpoint. Tie your sneakers or tuck your laces inside your shoes so you can slip in and out of them without untying them. And wear socks. So when you’re standing in the airport security line, you’re not in your bare feet.

Elastic waistband pants + a short-sleeve t-shirt + a removable long-sleeve button-down shirt + your travel jacket + your bulkiest shoes

Elastic waistband pants + a short-sleeve t-shirt + a removable long-sleeve button-down shirt + your travel jacket + your bulkiest shoes

Pants | Tee | Button-down shirt | Jean Jacket | Belt Bag | Sneakers

Pack an instant stain remover pen so you’re ready if your coffee spills.

How do you dress stylishly while traveling in the summer?

To look stylish while traveling in the summer season, including little touches like a belt and costume jewelry to elevate your look. Then choose simple tailored pieces. Tailored pieces are elevated because of their details. For example, a classic and trendy white button-up blouse and a shirtdress are instantly stylish, thanks to a smart collar.

What should I wear when traveling in the summer?

It’s a good idea to create a summer travel capsule wardrobe or a suitcase full of hardworking pieces that effortlessly mix and match, help you survive a hot day, and take you into all the situations you may encounter.

If you’re wondering exactly what to wear when traveling in the summer, I have a packing list for you and then 12 versatile summer travel outfits for you.

First thing, let’s look at that packing list.

When it comes to choosing your pieces, look for lightweight fabrics with natural fibers. Cotton and cotton poplin is a perfect choice. I prefer them over linen for traveling since linen wrinkles so much.

If you’re planning to wear separates like shorts, a skirt, or jeans on your trip, you need tops to pair with them.

Tank tops. The perfect cool weather piece, wear your tank top alone with jeans, a skirt, or shorts. Also, layer one underneath a button-up shirt or denim jacket.

White t-shirts. White tees are wardrobe staples that you’ll wear by themselves or layered just like you wear tank tops. I love stripes, so I’ll add in a few striped t-shirts in addition to white tees.

LOFT - White Everyday Crew Tee

Since tops and tees get smelly and dirty, pack a top for every day that you don’t plan to wear a dress or a bathing suit as your main layer.

A button-up shirt . Choose a button-up shirt that’s white, chambray, light blue, or striped depending on your color scheme. It’s a versatile staple. You can layer it over a tank top and shorts, a skirt, or throw it over a t-shirt dress and leave it open. Or button it up and tuck it into a pair of jeans or linen pants. Down below I’ll show you all the ways to wear one.

Unlike tops that need to be laundered between washes, you can wear your bottoms for several days as long as they don’t get stained.

Shorts or skirts. For hot casual days, shorts or a skirt are a great option. For shorts, your most casual option is denim shorts. Linen shorts or cotton shorts are more elevated. If you don’t love wearing shorts, choose a skirt instead.

J.Crew Factory: White Classic Denim Shorts For Women

Jeans or linen pants. For rainy days or cool nights, you want to have at least one pair of jeans or linen pants on hand. Choose white jeans or white linen pants for a coastal vibe. Or go with blue jeans in your favorite style.

J.Crew Factory Ecru Wide-leg jean in all-day stretch

A matched set

Matched sets. Matched sets are all the rage these days. They take the guesswork out of getting dressed. My favorites are all gauze. I especially love a gauze shorts and shirt set because you can lay around in it without worrying about wrinkles. Wear them together casually with leather flip-flops or with strappy sandals for a laid-back barbecue. Wear them separately with other items in your suitcase.

Gap - Navy Crinkle Gauze Shorts

Bring two different styles of dresses. By packing two styles of dresses you’ll be prepared for different occasions.

A t-shirt dress. You want a casual dress that you can throw on and go. It’s easy to wear when you run out to breakfast or to get a cup of coffee. Choose a t-shirt dress in the best style for your body type. I talk about the best t-shirt dress by body type in this post, 20 Best Black T-shirt Dress Outfit Ideas + Style Tips .

Amazon Essentials Women's Sleeveless Woven Shirt Dress, Black, Medium

A comfortable shirtdress. An elevated dress works for moments that are slightly more formal like your family reunion, dinners, sightseeing, wine tasting, or taking in a museum. If you’re headed to the beach, choose an option that can double as a beach coverup.

LOFT - Lou & Grey Sandwashed Dolman Pocket Shirtdress

If dresses are all you’ll be wearing, then pack more.

Optional: A maxi dress. If you’re headed to the beach, you may want a resort-style maxi dress that’s colorful, light, and airy.

Nordstrom - Pink Wrap Maxi Cover-Up Dress

If you’re headed to a beach wedding, this is one of my favorite daytime wedding guest dresses. A maxi dress can be dressed up for a beach wedding.

An outer layer

For cool mornings and evenings or rainy days, it’s always a good idea to have a light piece of outerwear with you.

A denim, cotton, or leather jacket or cardigan. A denim jacket gives a casual vibe while a leather jacket can be worn over a dress to create an edgy vibe for a night out. A cardigan is cozy and perfect to layer over a light dress down at the beach.

Denim Trucker Jacket in Light Mid Indigo Wash | Gap

The right footwear is everything when you’re traveling. Again, consider your itinerary and pack accordingly.

White sneakers. White sneakers are versatile, classic shoes perfect for long days of walking when you want more foot support.

Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Core Ox

Flat sandals. Depending on your itinerary, you may want sandals built for comfort that are perfect for your days of walking, like Birkenstocks. If you plan to hike, bike, or whitewater raft, take a sporty waterproof sandal like a Teva. If you are at the beach, choose leather flip-flops.

Zappos - Birkenstock Arizona EVA (White EVA) Women's Shoes

Leather slide sandals or heels. This is the shoe you’ll wear out to dinner with your dress or a skirt. If you’re heading to a wedding or have a dressier event, you may want to pack a heel.

Nordstrom - Carolina Slide Sandal

Packing tip: Pack sandals, a bag, and a belt that match so you can easily pair them together. Matching accessories add visual interest to outfits that are more minimalistic and made with neutral colors, as you’ll see below in my outfit formulas.

Bags are everything when you’re traveling. In addition to a suitcase, have a belt bag and a tote bag that holds all the junk that you need when you’re in transit.

A belt bag. A belt bag looks like a fanny pack from back in the day but with a modern silhouette. Wear it across the body sort of like a crossbody bag. It’s completely hands free, and sits safely and securely on the front of your body. It’s one of the best ways to carry just the essentials that you want quickly at hand when you’re in the airport. It holds your cell phone, passport or ID, a small wallet for your credit card, your sunglasses, AirPods, and lip balm. Once you arrive at your destination, you’ll use it for your phone, room key, and wallet.

t-shirt dress and white sneakers

A shoulder tote bag or backpack. A tote bag or backpack is an easy way to carry all the junk you don’t put in your suitcase but need while you travel. A book, your iPad, your phone charger, travel snacks, and your water bottle.

Fjallraven, Kanken Classic Backpack for Everyday, Fog

A bathing suit

A bathing suit. In the summertime, packing a bathing suit is always a good idea even if you’re not heading to a beach destination. After a long day of walking and sightseeing, you may want to dip into the hotel hot tub at the end of the night. If you’re heading to the beach and want a swimsuit alternative, read my post, 7 Comfy Swimsuit Alternatives That Are Better Than Swimsuits .

A beach coverup . If you’re going to the beach, you may want a coverup for your swimsuit.

A straw hat

Protection from the sun is always something I appreciate. If I’m heading to a sporting event and don’t want to squint the whole time or am out sightseeing, I always appreciate the chance to make my own shade. Certainly, you can choose a baseball hat, but a straw hat adds style to anything you wear it with.

Now that we’ve talked about what to pack, let’s look at some of the best travel outfits!

12 Summer travel outfit formulas

Let’s look at 12 outfit formulas that you can replicate.

T-shirt dress + button-up shirt + slide sandals + belt bag

A t-shirt dress is easy to throw on when you’re running to the hotel coffee shop or out to get breakfast. But it also can be a staple of your summer travel wardrobe.

T-shirt dress + button-up shirt + slide sandals + belt bag

Similar Shirt | Slides | Similar Dress | Similar Belt Bag

Wear it with slide sandals, a button-up shirt, and a crossbody bag for lunch or site seeing. If your dress is more flowy like mine is, pair it with a more fitted button-up shirt.

T-shirt dress + denim jacket + white sneakers

You’ll find a t-shirt dress with tiers everywhere right now. Here I chose a bright red dress for a pop of color.

T-shirt dress + denim jacket + white sneakers

Jacket | Dress | Sneakers

Wear it with your denim jacket and white sneakers for sightseeing. Then peel off that jacket as the day gets warmer.

Matching set

A matching set reduces your outfit decisions by half. So if you struggle to figure out what to pair together, a set is perfect for you. This gauze matching set is the perfect thing if you want a special shorts outfit.

Top | Shorts | Sandals | Similar Belt Bag

There’s something about wearing a column of the same color that’s so elevated. But the funny thing is, gauze is the most comfortable fabric ever. So you can wear it in a beach chair by the pool and any wrinkles fall right out. I’ve worn mine to a casual family dinner exactly like this. You can also style the pieces separately as you’ll see in the next outfit.

Tank top + gauze shorts from matching set + slide sandals

Here’s an outfit pairing those gauze shorts with a simple tank top and slide sandals. Wear this to sit under the cabana at the pool.

Leather slide sandals can be worn so many ways, with shorts, dresses, and to the pool or out to lunch or dinner.

T-shirt + gauze shorts from matching set + slide sandals

A graphic tee is perfect with those gauze shorts and slide sandals.

Add a straw hat and you’re ready for the pool or a casual stroll.

Button-up shirt + white denim shorts + sandals

Here’s another outfit that’s a column of one color. Take your white button-up shirt and tuck it into your denim shorts. Choose white denim shorts for a more elevated look than blue denim. Roll up the sleeves to help draw attention to your waistline.

Button-up shirt + white denim shorts + sandals

Similar Shirt | Shorts | Sandals | Bag

Add a belt and sandals and you have a look that has a cool enough vibe that you can wear it to a rooftop deck bar.

Button-up shirt + tank top + white denim shorts + slide sandals

Take your denim shorts and pair them with your white tank top and a button-up shirt. In this look, I’m wearing a blue and white striped button-up shirt. Love some stripes.

Shirt | Tank | Denim Shorts | Slides

Slide sandals finish the look.

T-shirt + white jeans + sandals

Here’s another all-white look. Pair your white t-shirt with your white jeans. Then add a matching brown belt, sandals, and bag to ground the look and make it intentional.

T-shirt + white jeans + sandals

T-shirt | Jeans | Sandals | Bag

Tank top + denim jacket + linen pants + slides

Pair your fitted tank top with your wide-leg linen pants for a laid-back and comfortable look. Grab your denim jacket for cool evenings.

Shirtdress + sandals

Pair your super comfortable shirtdress with sandals and a matching belt bag for an easy but elevated look you can wear out to dinner.

Shirtdress + sandals

Dress | Similar Sandals | Similar Belt Bag | Hat

Tank top + linen pants + slides

This is about the easiest outfit you can put together and wear. Pair your tank top and linen pants for one column of color. With wide-leg pants, keep your top slim-fitting to keep from looking frumpy. The belt bag helps to create waist definition.

Tank top + linen pants + slides

Tank Top | Similar Linen Pants | Slides | Hat | Similar Belt Bag

The slides are easy to walk in and more elevated than sneakers.

Shirtdress + denim jacket + white sneakers

You can totally pair your shirtdress with a denim jacket and sneakers.

This shirtdress is a bit more casual thanks to knit fabric. But it still looks great with sandals or slides.

Travel Outfits: How to Look Chic When You’re Flying

travel outfits

Listen—I’m all about rocking a cute travel outfit when I’m heading out of town…but I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing heels to the airport.

To be honest, I don’t even like wearing jeans on a plane (although I’ll occasionally make an exception if they’re REALLY comfortable jeans , or if my flight is under three hours.)

Usually you’ll find me rocking a head-to-toe set of my favorite affordable cashmere during the winter, and a lightweight loungewear set during the summer.

I often see pictures of bloggers at the airport posing next to their cute pink luggage wearing like…wedges and a mini-dress. HARD PASS. How is that even comfortable? When you’re en route to the airport (and your final destination) it’s all about feeling comfortable.

For this reason, I decided to put together a little guide to cute travel outfits…featuring things that you’ll actually want to travel in , whether you’re heading out for a winter getaway or a girls trip .

Because believe it or not, it’s possible to rock comfy loungewear, leggings, or a jumpsuit and still look SUPER chic, as long as you style them properly (especially my favorite faux leather leggings .)

Below are a handful of great travel outfits I found while trolling IG—and the exact things you can buy to replicate them.

(Also: if you’re also on the hunt for stylish carry-on luggage or if you need some good go-to travel toiletries…I got you covered.)

Chic Travel Outfits

Travel Outfits

Here, I’m sharing a handful of my go-to travel outfit pieces. These are all items that I think you should have in your closet regardless of how often you go on a getaway, but they just so happen to be particularly comfy choices when going on a plane.

These picks will of course depend on how long your flight is and where you’re headed, but overall, I think they’re practical for travel days.

The only caveat here is that I know a jumpsuit isn’t exactly ideal if you’re going on a long-haul flight—however—I personally don’t mind wearing them on planes because they’re so comfy and not really that difficult to slip in and out of when you need a bathroom break.

If jumpsuits aren’t your jam, there are plenty of other ideas in this post that should work for you, like a cute matching sweatsuit or leggings and a leather jacket. Without further ado, here are the staples I’d recommend having on hand for travel days.

This post gave me a more clear idea of what I will wear when travelling and I especially loved the part where you mentioned the all black and all white monochromatic looks .

I do not think I would wear white on a plane. No to the belly sticking out as well. I do like the stretchy pants and sneakers.

Why would anyone wear a jumpsuit on a plane? The toilets are used by hundreds of people, now you want to pull down the top part of your clothes and have it dangling somewhere near the toilet, while you’re sitting on a toilet that exposes the part that gets wee on when the seat is up? Eeu that’s all kind of germ wrong!! But I do love the little 3/4 joggers! Def looking for some of those for my next long haul (when this pandemic is over!)

A tank and jeans is basically my uniform, especially on a travel day. These ribbed, neutral ones from Banana Republic go with everything—perfect for the end of a trip when you’re running low on bottoms—but they’re so rub-against-your-cheek soft you’ll grab for one every time you’re heading to the airport. I used to reach for a cotton tee, but honestly, if you’re flying long-haul, the tank wins for when the A/C fluctuates, or you land in a place with a totally different climate (so much breezier!).   —Megan Spurrell, senior editor

No matter how hot it might be outside, I always find myself packing a pair of sweatpants in my personal item for the flight. As a recommendation from a friend in high school who spent most of her life skating on ice, Roots was the end all be all for sweatsuit sets—and I couldn’t agree more. The soft cotton material adds a layer of warmth as well as a slight plushness to the uncomfortable airplane seat. —Paris Wilson, commerce producer

The core of my travel strategy, especially when it comes to packing and choosing outfits, is to automate as much as humanly possible. (Because I already have a shelf in my closet with a pre-packed Dopp kit , cords and chargers, packing cubes, and other travel gear, I rarely forget anything for a trip.) Lunya's Restore Travel Kit was a no-brainer for me: With a set of leggings, tank top, long-sleeve T-shirt, socks, and eye mask, it gives you a perfectly pulled-together-but-comfortable plane outfit; keep a blazer and a change of shoes when you land and you'll walk off with a proper day look. —Corina Quinn, former Traveler editor

As a millennial, the words “low-rise jeans” can be deeply triggering, but this pair from New York City–based brand Still Here has convinced me to make an exception to my high-waist only rule. They sit low on your hips, yes, but in a way that feels surprisingly natural. Maybe because there’s no waistband, which is what officially takes this pure cotton denim from purely cool to genuinely comfortable. I’ve always been an advocate of looking put together no matter how long the flight (no Uggs and sweats here), but it’s only because I’ve found pieces that deceive how easy they are to sleep in. These wide-leg jeans are the epitome of that—plus, they’ve got a photogenic silhouette that makes me turn to throughout the rest of my trip. — M.S.

summer plane travel outfits

I swear by Skims for comfortable loungewear and the Cotton Rib tank might just be my all-time favorite piece from the brand (seriously I own it in every color). While I like to bundle up in a hoodie during the flight, I’m always hot when I first get on the plane so I like to wear a tank top underneath. Skims’s cotton rib material is so soft and stretchy—I wear these tanks on the flight, during the day, and even as pajamas when I’m packing light. —Meaghan Kenny, associate commerce editor

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Pants, Tights, Human, and Person

Lululemon's Align leggings are buttery soft and the ones I always reach for when I'm traveling. They somehow get more comfortable the more you wear them, and the high waistband stays in place without feeling restricting. These are universally beloved for lighter workouts, but I think the black color is ideal for a flight, where you want to be comfortable but also want to be able to go from the plane straight to sightseeing when necessary. —Stephanie Wu, former Traveler editor

Especially on a long flight, I’m looking for comfort over everything—and this ultra-soft, fairly stretchy, supportive-enough cotton bra from Arq is supremely comfortable. It comes in a ton of colors and sizes (ranging from XS to 4X), feels like a sports bra without any of the tight compression, and means I’m not dealing with harsh or poking underwire mid-flight. I’m also a big fan of Arq’s cropped tank , if you want something more full coverage to layer under your plane uniform. —Meredith Carey, former travel bookings editor

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Pants, Denim, Jeans, Human, and Person

If I'm not wearing leggings on a flight, I'm probably in this pair of joggers. They're made of a sporty, sweat-wicking material that's stretchy and smooth against my skin, and have that all-important elastic waistband with a drawstring, tapered ankle, and pockets. —Madison Flager, senior commerce editor

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Pants, Denim, Jeans, Human, and Person

I used to shudder at the idea of ‘travel’ clothing (it always brought to mind clunky passport concealing pockets and old-school travel belts). That was until a family member bought me a pair of Eddie Bauer Travex pants , which I now call my plane pants. The line is made of stretch fabric that’s lightweight and moisture wicking, so they feel like super-breathable pajamas, but look totally sleek and come in a surprising array of styles. My first pair were super basic joggers , but I also now have a cool wide-leg pair that you’d never guess are from the same place my dad used to buy all our outdoor gear—and have all the hidden zippered pockets you could ever need. —Shannon McMahon, destinations editor

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Human, Person, Pajamas, and Paris Jackson

Sweatshirts are, by nature, comfortable, but there's something about this Knix quarter zip hoodie that just takes it to another level. The material is so soft and smooth—the cotton, modal, and spandex blend makes the fabric lightweight and thinner than a fleece sweatshirt, and the loose, boxy fit is just what I want while sitting for hours at a time. I also like that you can zip it all the way up for more coverage, or unzip to have the collar drape open. —M.F.

Image may contain: Footwear, Clothing, Shoe, Apparel, Human, Person, Pants, Shirt, and Floor

For me, getting dressed for a flight is often a struggle between opting for comfort with leggings and sweatpants or choosing "hard pants" if I need to look presentable upon arrival. But with the Turn It Up pant from Aday, I've found the perfect middle ground. Made from an 100 percent vegan blend of nylon and elastane that's both breathable and stretchy, these pants are seriously comfortable. My favorite part is probably the high waistband that's both elastic and flattering, but I also love the front pleats, tapered leg, and—crucial for traveling and packing—wrinkle resistance. I'm not exaggerating when I say I've worn these pants nearly everyday in lockdown and have yet to be sick of them. As a bonus, they come in four colors and are consciously produced in Aday's factory that's powered by 50 percent renewable energy. —Jessica Puckett, transportation editor

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Sweater, Sweatshirt, Hood, and Hoodie

I love this cozy Essential Hoodie; it's clear it was made with travelers in mind. It comes with a built-in eye-mask, perfect for getting some sleep on a long flight, and a hidden pocket to tuck your phone into. It’s just the right amount of oversized and is buttery soft—you’ll feel like you’re wearing a blanket. —M.K.

summer plane travel outfits

It’s seen as taboo to wear pajamas to the airport, but I don’t think I’ve seen anyone mention slippers. The Ugg Tasman has all the comfort of a slipper with a thick EVA sole made to be worn inside or outside. They're easy to slip on if you're rushing out the door and easy to slip off in the TSA line. —P.W.

Image may contain: Clothing, Shoe, Footwear, Apparel, and Running Shoe

Whether I'm lugging my suitcase through the NYC subway or covering some serious ground browsing airport stores post-security, I often find myself on my feet for a large chunk of travel days. So, when I'm reaching for a travel shoe, 99 percent of the time you'll find me rocking my oh-so-comfy Skechers Ultra Flex 2.0 sneakers. Is it the most stylish look? Fine, no. But the memory foam insole is heaven and the shoes are so light on my feet that I feel like a baby gazelle. Plus, they're pre-laced and slip-on, making the TSA line a total breeze. —Lara Kramer, global associate director of audience development

Image may contain: Clothing, Shoe, Footwear, Apparel, Running Shoe, and Sneaker

These feel more like slippers than shoes, and function more like slippers when it comes to rolling through security. The fact that I can throw them in the washing machine after a trip means I can wear them on the plane without socks, making them all the more comfortable. —Noah Kaufman, former Traveler editor

Image may contain: Clothing, Shoe, Footwear, Apparel, and Sneaker

When I know that I'm landing with a full itinerary waiting on me I gravitate towards my Stan Smiths.  They can make any outfit look sleek and help me to feel a little more put together. They have a permanent place in my airport wardrobe because no matter where I am, they are always comfortable and easy to clean. —P.W.

Years ago, Mara Hoffman told me in an interview that she always wears compression socks. The way they increase circulation is supposed to help with jet lag, puffiness, and just feeling better after a long journey. I’ve been secretly sliding Bombas on before every 5-hour-plus flight since. The black and white are subtle enough, and though you have to fight a bit to get them on, they really compress—I swear they’ve helped me arrive feeling fresher than I used to. — M.S.

My mom always travels with a pashmina, and so naturally I've gotten into the habit of bringing some sort of blanket scarf along too. It can be tough to find the right balance: Some of my warmest ones are also rather bulky, so much so that I dread toting them around for the rest of the trip. This Mongolian cashmere wrap from Qunce is my current favorite in-between. It's long enough to wrap around my neck or drape over my lap or shoulders as a blanket but doesn't take up my entire tote bag or backpack . —M.F.

This Metro Sling is an airport essential. Having a hands-free bag makes carrying my luggage and moving through security a breeze; it gives me easy access to my phone, AirPods, passport, lip balm, and any other small essentials I have on me. Thanks to the adjustable strap, I can wear it around my waist or across the chest or back. —M.K.

I love to bring fuzzy socks on airplanes, especially on red-eyes where I'm trying to get as comfortable as possible in order to sleep for a few hours. Ugg makes my favorite pair: They are incredibly soft and cozy, and don't shed fabric in the way some other pairs I've purchased do. Depending on the climate I'm coming from, I'll either wear them under my shoes to the airport, or throw them in my bag and pull them on over my ankle socks once I get on the plane.   —M.F.

10 tips for putting together a Summer Airplane Outfit

summer plane travel outfits

So, it’s about to be summer and where are you off to? If you are flying somewhere, a comfy airplane outfit is key. The longer the distance the more comfortable you need to be. I’m all about style but I endured a 17 & ½ hour plane ride to Sydney last summer and believe me I was only thinking about comfort.

There’s a ridiculously easy outfit formula that I turn to time and again for airplane travel:

Top layer + Top + bottom + comfortable shoes

You simply choose items that fit in these general categories based on your travel needs and your own personal style.

While your destination may be warm, airplanes and airports can get cold so a top layer to keep you warm is always a good idea. A light sweater or even a comfy wrap may be all you need. It’s also a good idea to throw this in your day bag during your travels for chilly nights or chilly restaurants.

Anything goes here as long as it’s comfortable.

It’s best to stick to pants, jeans or leggings. You won’t be cold, on the plane and according to this article it’s best to stay away from dresses and skirts during plane travel.

Comfortable shoes

Comfort is key. Until you are sitting on the plane there may be a lot of standing around waiting or even running to make your gate. Choose your footwear wisely and go with comfort.

As you can see from my graphic you can take this simple formula in many different directions. Choose a look that inspires you for your next trip or check out my Pinterest board dedicated to Summer Airplane looks.

summer plane travel outfits

Here’s a few rules to keep in mind when planning your Airplane Outfit.

1.  Wear layers

Even though the temperatures may be warm at your destination, on the plane that’s a different story and layers are key to dealing with fluctuations in temperature. A light jacket, sweater, wrap, or kimono won’t take up much room but will keep you warm when the in-flight temperature drops. On overnight flights keep in mind that your body temperature will naturally drop and you will feel cold. For more on layers, read here .

Even when traveling to warm destinations it’s always useful to carry a light outer layer because museums and restaurants can have their air conditioning cranked up to compensate for warm temperatures outside. Another advantage to layers is that the more layers you wear the less you have to haul around in your carry-on luggage.

2. Dark colors

If you’re on a long haul flight you want to stick to darker colors. If you happen to spill coffee or wine on yourself you don’t have to worry too much about visible stains. On shorter flights you can take your chances with lighter colored clothing.

3. Comfort is key

The longer the flight the more your outfit should emphasize comfort than fashion. Looking pulled together is important but there’s ways to pull it off without looking too sloppy. Leggings with dresses, jeans with stretch, joggers, technical pants like these from Athleta are all good options.

4. Avoid dresses and skirts

Unless you are wearing leggings underneath avoid wearing dresses and skirts. I’ve never worn them in transit without leggings but after reading this article I don’t think I ever will.

5. Bring a Scarf

A scarf is an absolute “Travelista” essential . It will help you when temperatures get cold on the plane and you can always keep it in your bag for chilly nights or chilly restaurants. It’s also the key to pulling off a celebrity type airplane outfit.

6. Wear comfortable shoes

Shoes that are easily slipped on and off and that are comfortable are ideal ones to wear during airplane travel. Airline travel is not always easy especially when you have to run to your gate after standing in a never ending security line.

Sometimes it takes half an hour to board – and you are standing the whole time like on my last trip I had to stand in line to go down some stairs to stand around some more to wait for a bus where once it arrived all the passengers stood on until it took us to our plane. Closed toe shoes are best but summer travel doesn’t always allow for that. If you do happen to wear open toed shoes, bring socks in case your feet get cold.

7. Keep accessories to a minimum

You will have to take them off when going through security and the less you have to keep track of the better.

8.Keep your clothing silhouettes loose if possible

The longer your flight the more important this is. If you are wearing skinny jeans or leggings make sure they aren’t too constricting and have a little give to them.

9. Keep it simple

Stay away from fussy fabrics and styles. Keep it simple because you don’t want to be worrying about staining a silk blouse or adjusting fussy clothing.

10. Don’t wear pajamas and don’t wear revealing clothing

Yes, pajamas are comfortable but they aren’t appropriate for travel, instead try joggers or loose fitting wide cut pants or leggings and a long tee. Also there’s been several stories about people getting kicked off planes for wearing revealing clothing – don’t be that person.

Interesting note about the maxi skirts. 27 Best Summer Travel Outfits that Will Rock Your Vacation in 2022

We have only a few months left before summer, and we are all excited to travel. But even though it is a favorite time of year to many people due to warm days, sunbathing, and swimming in the sea and pool, no other season challenges your fashion sense as much as summer, as the question of what clothes to wear becomes a real problem.

So, if you’re among those who have no idea how to sort your wardrobe for different occasions, especially during traveling, I got your back. In this guide, I will share ideas of summer travel outfits, with examples and styling tips. So, sit back, relax, and allow me to dissuade your fashion distress.

21 More Outfit Ideas for Different Summer Vacation Destinations

What are your plans for this summer, ladies?

Whether you’re escaping to the countryside, traveling to big cities, or exploring foreign cultures, you will definitely need casual and comfortable attire. So, no matter what your destination might be, I’ve illustrated 10 different outfit examples so that you can look your best and feel comfy!

One-day trips are a great way to relax and recharge. If you’re planning a one-day getaway, it’s important to look laid-back rather than over-dressed for this trip. But you definitely still want to look stylish, so I’ve put together three travel outfit ideas for your short voyage!

For starters, the denim-on-denim bandwagon is a chic outfit option for summer. In my opinion, the trendy combo in the picture below should belong in all women’s wardrobes. Just add cool sunglasses, backpack, and soft sneakers to the outfit, and you’re ready to go!

Next, jumpsuits are all the rage in the summer heat for all the right reasons! These are stylish, comfortable, and feminine. The floral jumpsuit in the picture below looks perfect with basic sneakers, sunnies, and a transparent bag in royal blue color:

Think about it – even if your trip takes just one day, wearing fitting pants or skinny jeans is still a hell of a struggle in the hot summer days. So, a flowy jumpsuit is a perfect substitute in this case. Or, I also recommend loose culottes – a type of pants made out of breezy fabric. I wore such pants during my journey to Victoria Falls – they saved me from the relentless heat and humidity:

These are perfect for striking a fashion statement while giving enough space to your legs. This easy-peasy and travel-ready attire can be coupled with a fancy backpack and comfy sneakers.

What should one wear to the airport? Such clothes are all about comfort rather than looking good. However, it’s still possible to put together a stylish look. I’ve picked three ways below how you can look top-class with super comfort!

First up: leggings. These are insanely comfortable with a breathable fabric, which allows for easy movements and will look decent on you even after a long flight.

You can pair black leggings with a white or any neutral-color T-shirt and some hoodie in case you’re cold. A simple backpack will add practicality to your outfit, and the sneakers are the best pick if you want your feet to feel comfortable:

The next outfit is for those who want a classic all-white look. Snug joggers with a long-sleeved top will keep you cozy throughout the flight:

You’ll appear super chic in this outfit. And, if you don’t mind wearing jewelry during flights, add some gold hoops. You can finish the outfit with brown or any other neutral color sneakers.

Finally, if the cold air in the plane doesn’t really bother you, try wearing a sleeveless crop top made of a cozy material. For the bottom, pick sweatpants in a contrasting shade and opt for fitness sneakers, like in the example below:

However, pur a sweatshirt hoodie in your backpack just in case – you don’t want to get sick on the plane. For accessories, a gold watch and hoops are a perfect match. A bucket hat adds a final touch to this ideal airport outfit.

Summer travel outfits for a countryside vacation don’t always have to be boring. Believe it or not, there are tons of clothing inspirations fit to wear in the rural areas. That’s why I’ve let my creativity lose to come up with outfit ideas, so you could pick the one that resonates with you the most!!

To me, nothing screams countryside like a red checkered top. You can also throw in a jeans skirt and leather boots to complete the look:

This combination is ideal for your pastoral getaway. A heart-shaped basket adds to the look, making it cute and romantic.

The second outfit I recommend is based on silk and denim. From the jean shorts to a headscarf and a sleeveless silk top, this outfit looks perfect:

Beige-colored toe sandals, bucket bag, sunnies, and tiny, floral earrings wrap up this silky smooth look.

Finally, a long, floating dress with a basket bag and comfy trainers is a combo made especially for strolling in the fields. Finish the look with a light lip gloss, cool sunnies, and a high ponytail to look all dolled-up:

And don’t forget – always bring a jean jacket for your next countryside trip. It can be a little colder outside of town, especially in the evening.

Many travel destinations such as Bali, Maldives, and Costa Rica, unfortunately, have humid weather. But no worries – you still have plenty of options for summer travel outfits in sheer humidity.

First and foremost, choose clothing items that aren’t too tight around your body. For instance, a breathable, long skirt will make sure that your legs don’t sweat. You can pair it up with a sleeveless top. And, easy-to-wear flat flip-flops will allow you to walk for hours without sweating, complementing the outfit and making it look relaxed:

I don’t recommend wearing heavy accessories. Just pick a lightweight bracelet, purse, and classic dark sunnies.

Another great outfit option to wear in high humidity is a cutout dress. These garments are usually made of cotton or other breathable fabrics that make your body feel comfortable and absorb sweat. Besides, cutout dresses look super cute:

This dress helps your skin breathe freely and makes you look fabulous at the same time. The open-toe sandals, golden hoops, and long-strapped purse follow the same principle – comfort with style.

In general, if fashion is not a priority for you on a hot summer trip, blindly trust any clothing made of pure cotton. The cutout in the little dress below allows airiness, and the linen fabric cools your body. This way, a dress will not stick to the skin during humid days.

You can add a small basket bag and hat to protect you from sunlight.

To me, city vacations are the most stressful ones. City fashion loves flaunting luxurious clothes, so you really need to think your outfits through if you also want them to be practical. That’s why I’ve put together three styles that will help you remain comfortable but also add chic to the look.

First comes the silky green top in the example below, which defines sophistication and creates a truly cosmopolitan style. Paired with this top, high-waisted, loose linen pants will instantly make you look posh:

Don’t forget to wear classy heeled sandals and a purse of the same color as your accessories.

Want to look more casual instead of poised? I got you. In this case, loose shorts and a top with a backless crop are the right components for a seductive city outfit:

Little black purses and wedge heel sandals are always a good choice for such summer travel outfits.

Lastly, a jumpsuit is one more thing that needs to be in your suitcase for a summer vacation in the city. Take a look at this floral red piece paired with lady-like heeled flip-flops:

I also recommend wearing simple, round earrings, sunglasses, a little purse, and some hair accessories with this outfit.

Summer vacation is incomplete without a trip to the beach, right? Cocktails, sunbathing, and refreshing in the beautiful sea – that’s what heaven on the Earth looks like. Besides swimsuits , in this article, I want to focus on other clothing options we can wear to the sunny beach.

First of all, I simply love the bikinis that clasp at the back of your neck, like the one you can see in the picture below:

Also, the light summer dresses as an addition will offer layered protection. Wear simple flip-flops, black sunnies, and throw in a good, big beach bag!

Next come floral bikinis, which are a favorite for many women, including me. These are just the most adorable and can be paired with almost everything. Such bikinis look the best with denim shorts and some dark sunglasses like in the picture below:

You can’t deny it – this outfit will look absolutely gorgeous somewhere on a beach on the Black Sea cost in beautiful Bulgaria. To complete this look, you can add a simple tote bag and fancy sandals to make you look super-cute and feel comfortable.

Also, a flowy white dress reaching just above your knees is a great option if you’re not in the mood for swimming. Inspire yourself with this outfit:

You can pair this dress with a small handbag, flip-flops, sunglasses, and a pearl bracelet. This outfit is a perfect choice to go out drinking your favorite cocktails at the beach bar.

Lastly, I haven’t forgotten our beautiful women thriving in their fifties! There are certain ways to still look sexy at this age, so don’t give up on yourself just yet. When it comes to summer travel outfits, middle-aged women can rock all attires by following some basic tips.

The fifties are characterized by many changes in the body. One of the irritating things is excessive sweating, which is why you need to focus on choosing light, comfortable and breathable clothes.

Elegant shirts, linen pants, and flat shoes are your best fashion friends during the summer months. Check out this simple and at the same timeless summer outfit you can wear for afternoon walks:

In my opinion, a linen shirt and pants are a winning combination. Despite long sleeves, it won’t be too hot for you because the linen fabric is very breathable. You can wear an outfit like this on the plane as well – it is very soft and comfy.

If you prefer dresses, spacious models with floral patterns will work best for you. You will look fresh and super fancy in such a dress, and it will let your body breathe. Besides, you won’t have problems styling it, just check this outfit below:

Look at this flowy dress, green slippers with floral detail, and a big black knit bag – doesn’t it look perfect for a vacation? As a fashion accessory and protection from the sun, there is a knitted hat and large sunglasses. This is also a perfect outfit for a countryside vacation and humid weather.

To shine on the beach, I advise you to choose one-piece swimsuits that will hide any possible shortcomings . If you choose a darker shade, you will look slimmer and thinner. Let this outfit complemented by a belt at the waist and great fashion accessories be an inspiration for you:

I recommend adding elegant sunglasses, a large beach bag, a cardigan, and fancy slippers. And of course, don’t forget the hat to protect yourself from the sun and to make your overall look even more feminine.

And voilà, this sums our guide to styling your fashionable tourist outfits. Let’s go over the major pointers once again:

  • Light, breathable, loose, cutouts, and off-the-shoulder are some of the timeless summer trends.
  • Regarding dresses for travel and one-day trips, prioritize comfort.
  • Wear cotton and revealing clothes in the humidity.
  • In the city, be as fashionable as you want, but pack a practical outfit too.
  • Always wear hats and sunglasses on the beach.
  • For women in the fifties, adopt styles more suitable for your age – modern dresses, large bags, flat shoes, etc.

10 Easy Summer Travel Outfits

Summer is one of my favorite times to travel. The summer season brings such a laid-back vibe. The pools are opening, the temperature is heating up, and by June, most of us are ready for some fun in the sun! The warm weather makes it easier to travel lighter too – no heavy coats or boots are needed. Whether your summer trip will consist of a long flight or a short travel day, you can still be comfortable without sacrificing style. I’ve found that it’s always good to dress in layers no matter the temperature outside. You might need a light jacket for the cold plane, but the destination might be blazing. So, it’s best to be prepared for all the fluctuating temperatures you might encounter during your travel day. I’m rounding up 10 easy summer travel outfits to make you feel and look your best.

For even more summer travel outfit inspiration, you’ll love this post too!

Summer Midi Dresses

summer plane travel outfits

Shop the Look

Dresses are ideal for a comfortable travel day. They can make you feel put together, too. You can either pair your midi dress with fun sandals or white sneakers. I love that dresses are versatile enough to dress up or down, and you can easily layer a cardigan or denim jacket with them if you need one.

Matching Sets

summer plane travel outfits

These matching sets are a great outfit to wear for travel because they’re comfortable, and they’ll keep you cool if you’re going someplace warm. You can tuck the front part of the shirt into the shorts to give the outfit a little more structure. Pair strappy sandals or white sneakers to complete the look. I think a cute headband would also add to the overall look.

White Jeans with a Duster

summer plane travel outfits

If you don’t have time to change after arriving at your destination, this look will take you from transportation to adventure. It’s chic and comfortable. The white jeans are a great staple bottom to bring with you on trips because you can pair them with various outfits. Instead of the pearl flats, you could also wear slide sandals for a more casual look.

Athleisure Looks

summer plane travel outfits

When we went to the 30A area in Florida recently, these were my go-to looks for casual strolling around the town. The first look features a cropped sweatshirt paired with the popular Free People active shorts. You could also pack a white tee to wear with athleisure looks like these shorts, or jeans throughout your trip. If you’re looking for comfortable running or walking shoes, the pair I’m wearing is super comfortable, and love the blush color.

The second look features a skort paired with a long-sleeve active shirt. I use my belt bag often for traveling or for walks at home when I just need to bring my necessities. You can read my review of the Lululemon belt bag in this post .

My favorite skort for summer athleisure looks is this one from Spanx! Use my code AMANDAJOHNxSPANX for 10% off.

Linen Pants

summer plane travel outfits

Like the white jeans, light-colored linen pants are another great staple bottom for the spring and summer months. They feel light and comfortable when you wear them, and you can easily dress them more casually like I did in the first picture. Or you can dress them up a little with a floral, puff sleeve top. Packing a tote bag for a trip is always a must for me. I like to use my tote as a carry-on for a long-haul flight, and then use it throughout the trip as a purse or a bag for a long day.

summer plane travel outfits

These joggers have been a top seller consistently for I don’t know how many months now. The color is gorgeous and love that they don’t look too casual, but you get the comfort of a jogger too. In this picture, I dressed them up a little. But you can easily pair a tank or bodysuit with sandals to dress them down too.

summer plane travel outfits

Nothing says spring and summer quite like a fun print on shorts. These are a linen blend, so they’re comfortable. I paired it with a darling smocked, ruffle-detail top. It’s adorable paired with denim jeans or a mini-skirt too. Finish the look with statement earrings and a sun hat.

Summer Travel Tips for Packing

Aside from summer outfits, I have a few tips to help me stay organized during our trips. One of my biggest tips is to use packing cubes. Depending on how you like to stay organized, I like to put my daily outfits in one packing cube. So if we’re going somewhere for five days, I’ll have five packing cubes with the five outfits I’ll need throughout the trip. I also have one for pajamas and lounge clothes too.

That way, all you have to do is grab the cubes out of your bag and put them into the drawers where you’re staying. If you have anything that needs to be hung up, you can certainly do that. But for the most part, I keep everything in the cubes and steam them with a travel steamer if needed.

As the summer season winds down, there’s still time to squeeze in a summer trip. Sometimes it’s hard to narrow down your search of where to go and what to do. There’s so much to see and do in this world. If you’re in that situation, try joining some travel Facebook groups and search Pinterest. I’ve found some great inspiration just by searching on those two platforms. With Pinterest, I’ve found some really great travel blogs with detailed information on the best places to visit for couples and families too. You can also check out my travel guides on the blog, here.

What To Wear On A Plane In Summer?

When deciding on what to wear on your airplane travel day, dressing comfortably doesn’t mean you have to miss out on style. It’s possible to have both! For airplane outfit ideas, you could wear a midi dress that you already planned on packing and pair them with a pair of comfortable slip-on sandals for hassle-free security checks. You could also throw on a denim jacket that you planned on packing, too. This can help you both cut down on space in your bag, as well as keep you warm on those cooler flights.

If you’re in more of a pants mood, I would also travel in a linen pants outfit or a joggers outfit as well. Both options are both comfortable and stylish, making them the perfect travel pants if you’re headed out on an exciting vacation.

What to Wear to the Airport When It's 90 Degrees

Aemilia Madden

You leave the house lugging a heavy suitcase behind you, and by the time you get to the car, there's sweat slinking its way down your neck: Welcome to summer . When it's hot out, all we can think of is wearing as little clothing as possible, especially when  heading on vacation somewhere delectably exotic. But one mistake that's easy to make when the weather app is predicting temperatures 90 and above is boarding an airplane unprepared.

All it takes is that first arctic chill to blow its way around the cabin to feel the stab of both regret and goosebumps, knowing that your only sweater is tucked away in your checked bag. The key to  navigating travel when it's hot outside is to prepare for both the arctic chill of the AC and the oppressive heat outside as best you can. Think in layers and wear your warmest pieces (or at least keep them in your carry-on). To help you figure it all out, we're highlighting five celebrity airport looks to help you navigate travel wear when it's an un-cool 90 degrees out.

90-degree-airport-outfit-262851-1531432094130-image

Leggings are a perennial airport favorite, but if you're stuck in them in a heat wave, they're bound to make you sweat. To help bridge the style gap, try pairing them with a crop top or tying up your tee. Bring along a lightweight duster in case you get chilly, but keep your layers light so you don't get overheated.

H&M + Cotton T-Shirt

Embrace the bike shorts trend and swap leggings for this cropped style instead. To ensure you don't get chilly, throw on a sweatshirt and style with sneakers.

H&M + Hoodie

Linen pants are a transitional heavyweight, as they're breathable enough to keep you cool when you're in the sun, but when you go indoors, they're surprisingly suited to handling central AC. Style them with a denim jacket and tee and you'll be good to go.

Joox + Aviator Sunglasses

Heading straight from the airport to a party beachside and don't want to suffer the hassle of pulling apart your suitcase? Try wearing a pretty minidress and comfortable sneakers on the plane with you. Throw on an oversize jacket to save room in your suitcase and to help you deal with any chilly temps once in flight.

Reformation + Channa Minidress

During warmer months, it's best to avoid dark hues, which absorb heat and can leave you sweating. A comfy white tee and loose white trousers are a comfortable combination. Bring a denim jacket or simple sweater with you and you'll be ready once things cool off indoors.

Travel + Leisure / Daisy Rodriguez

Before I became a travel journalist, I was a buyer in the fashion industry for over 15 years, working with brands such as Brooks Brothers, Michael Kors, and the former Liz Claiborne, so you can say that I have a keen eye for style, quality fabrics, and a good fit. These days, I put my former skills to work in a different way. On average, I travel twice a month and it’s not unusual for me to be zipping through the airport on any given day, so I pack light and maximize the outfits that I’m taking with me.

At first, it wasn’t easy to streamline my packing lists for each destination; I was always stressed that I had left an essential top, pair of bottoms, jacket — you name it — at home. But, with the help of my former fashion buyer brain, I developed the ultimate travel capsule wardrobe , complete with three foolproof outfits that help me create dozens of looks (without needing to check a bag , I might add). Here are my favorite mix-and-match separates that suit any type of trip itinerary — both work and play — along with some must-have accessories that'll widen your wardrobe horizons.

Duer LuxTwill Trucker Jacket

Duer luxtwill high-rise trousers, minnow navy and dusty red stripe sweater.

I’ve been a huge fan of the Canadian clothing company Duer for several years now, and its LuxTwill Trucker Jacket and matching High-Rise Trousers are one of my favorite outfits to bring on work trips. Both the jacket and pants are made of 98 percent cotton and 2 percent elastane, so the pieces have a structured look while allowing for some stretch for comfort.

While it’s a great set, I also love to wear the jacket as a separate, over dresses, leggings, or jeans. And, to save suitcase space, I'll sport it on the plane. I've found that it's a versatile essential that’s great for work and play destinations. The trousers pair well with knits as well as button-front tops. I especially love pairing it with a slouchy novelty sweater like my favorite one from Minnow ; it's an excellent transition piece for spring that works with denim, pants, skirts and shorts and is constructed of a dreamy cotton-cashmere blend, making it super soft and comfortable.

The timeless nautical pullover is also cozy, but not bulky and the dolman sleeves are fashionable and functional, allowing you to move freely when traveling. I own two of these sweaters and find myself bringing them on work trips and vacations because they match with nearly everything that I own.

To copy the look for less, pair this cropped jacket (on sale for $24) with these $40 high-waisted trousers and this nautical-inspired crewneck sweater that's currently $31 — all from Amazon.

PrettyGarden Two-Piece Sleeveless Vest and Wide-Leg Pants Set

I’m in love with Amazon's two-piece sets because not only are they available at amazing price points, but they're super sleek and can be styled in so many ways. Here, the vest is drapey and offers a sophisticated and elegant look, although it also works well with denim; when I'm home, I like pairing it with my Everlane Super-Soft Relaxed Jeans for a laidback SoCal vibe, but when I'm on the go, it goes perfectly with the Duer LuxTwill High-Rise Trousers featured above (and I can layer the brand's LuxTwill Trucker Jacket on top or pair the PrettyGarden trousers with my Minnow sweater ).

The bottoms are like palazzo pants and flare slightly, with a loose fit throughout. I like that they aren’t too tight, making them perfect for work meetings, long travel days, and itinerary-heavy days. They also have functioning pockets that are great for holding your essentials while on the move. The set comes in eight colors and sizes range from S to 2XL. Both pieces are machine washable; I’ve put them to the test in the wash several times and they come out looking just as good as new. A word of advice: Make sure you hang them to dry or lay them flat so they retain good shape.

For a more tailored look, you can get the set with a tighter-fitting cropped vest for $52. But, if this look is too business casual for your destination, I also pulled some stunning two-piece sets; check out the now-viral Anrabess Short-Sleeve Mockneck Sweater Set on sale for $40, the tropical getaway-ready Anrabess Linen Tank Top Matching Set that's currently $30, or the PrettyGarden Rib Knit Matching Set , which trades trousers for an elegant maxi skirt.

Vuori’s Short-Sleeve Lux Crew Jumpsuit

Vuori makes my favorite activewear, so it’s no surprise that this super-flattering jumpsuit is on my list of favorite travel outfits. The jumpsuit's performance knit is so comfortable, especially in the summer when it feels good to wear loose-fitting clothing, but is also perfect for travel days, road trips, as well as lounging poolside (save room in your carry-on by using it as a swim cover-up).

To make this outfit extra cool, slip the brand’s Halo Performance Hoodie over it when heading to a Pilates class or an early morning stroll. You can also wear it with a cropped jacket (like the Duer trucker jacket that I mentioned earlier) for a night out on the town. When the dress code calls for something cozier, I'll layer my Minnow sweater on top so it feels like I'm wearing a sweatshirt and sweatpants — even though the combo looks effortlessly chic.

If you’re not a fan of onesies, don’t fret. Vuori's Villa Wide-Leg Pants can be paired with its Energy Top to serve a similar look. And, if you're looking for more budget-friendly jumpsuits, over at Amazon, you can get the Anrabess Short-Sleeve Crewneck Jumpsuit for $40.

Best Accessories for Travel Outfits

Now, it's time to put the finishing touches on these travel outfits. Similarly, my go-to accessories can be mixed and matched to be styled with different looks, ensuring that everything in your suitcase is functional and will get plenty of use on your trip. Below, you'll find my favorite travel shoes and travel purses to tie your outfits together.

Kizik Venice Slip-On Sneakers

A while back, I kept seeing these amazing hands-free slip-on shoes that you can put on and take off without having to bend down or fuss with laces. The Venice slip-ons are by far my favorites. They’re easy to slide right into, super lightweight, and hassle-free to pack. I love wearing them on long flights because they don’t feel constricting (plus, they make going through TSA security a breeze and I can easily slide out of them once I'm in my seat). And, when I'm at my destination, their cushy insoles and grippy rubber soles keep my feet comfy and supported when I'm on the move.

They go with everything and really elevate any outfit. I'll pair them with my Duer set for more casual affairs and use them to make my PrettyGarden vest-trouser duo more playful after work meetings. And, of course, they're the long-lost soulmate for my Vuori jumpsuit , especially on travel days.

Sapahn Jori Crossbody Bag

I used to be partial to labels and monogrammed bags, but I’m currently loving the Jori Crossbody for day-to-night use. During a recent trip to Santa Barbara, I found myself using it instead of my trusty Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag — which says a lot . Although it looks small, it actually fits everything that I need for a busy day on the go; I can store a small notebook, wallet, makeup compact, and smartphone in there without effort.

The best feature of this bag is that you can switch out the straps to give it an entirely different look, making it transitional from work to play. There are two pockets inside for organizing smaller items like lipsticks or receipts. It comes in four colors, although the khaki hue is my favorite because it’s great for spring and it goes with everything — whether I'm dressed up in my PrettyGarden vest and wide-leg trousers , dressed down in my Duer LuxTwill Trucker Jacket and matching High-Rise Trousers , or out grabbing coffee in my Vuori jumpsuit .

Amazon is filled with leather crossbody purses that are equal parts versatile, functional, and stylish — starting with the Gladdon Crossbody Bag (that's on sale for $16), the $13 FashionPuzzle Small Dome Chain Strap Crossbody Bag , and the Afkomst Crossbody Bag , which has a similar gold buckle detail in the center. For extra flair, I also spotted this on-sale Fossil crossbody that has a color-blocking print and a roomy build.

Milmo 1813 Tote Bag

Milmo's 1813 isn’t just another tote bag, it’s a lifesaver for travel. I often use it as a personal item (paired with my Vuori jumpsuit ) when flying because of its versatility and roominess. I also love that it has a removable and washable interior liner that easily comes out with snap buttons; I don’t have to over-worry about spills and messes (the company also offers a two-year warranty on any defects outside of normal wear and tear).

Its durable rope handles, which attach along the lower half of the bag, can hold up to 300 pounds, which is why it excels as a travel bag. As a tote, it's elegant, structured design is boardroom-ready (with my PrettyGarden two-piece set) , but it can also be worn as the perfect off-duty bag thanks to its convertible crossbody straps (I can sport it around town in the Vuori jumpsuit or Duer duo when I want to be hands-free). The exterior zip pockets allow for quick and easy access to your essentials while in line at the airport or a local eatery. It comes in four colors, but my choice is green.

Over at Amazon, you can replicate the look by adding the KouLi Buir Quilted Tote Bag ($40) or Missnine Laptop Tote Bag ($30) to your cart. But, if you want vast color options, I recommend the Wrangler Vintage Convertible Tote , which is available in 33 hues and is currently on sale for $49.

Everlane Day Glove Flats

While I’m a huge fan of my Mansur Gavriel flats , I usually opt for Everlane's Day Gloves when I'm traveling because they’re just so comfortable and sleek. Praised for their buttery soft leather, the shoes mold to your feet for easy movement and endless support. I can take on a full day of walking wearing them. The rubber soles create a solid foundation and provide grippy traction on uneven and slick surfaces.

Made in an Italian factory, they come in 13 colors and sizes from 5 to 11, with the option for narrow or comfort width. I own several colors and rotate them when traveling. Plus, they hardly take up any room in my suitcase, which is always a win if you're a carry-on-only traveler, and can help spruce up professional outfits like the PrettyGarden vest and wide-leg pants , or make laidback styles like the Duer trucker jacket , matching pants , and Minnow sweater dressier.

Their comfort is hard to match, but Amazon shoppers assure that the Trary Mary Jane Flats are another supportive option (and they're only $35). You can also get the Square-Toe Ankle Strap Ballet Flats , which are teacher-approved , from DreamPairs for $33. Knit flat fans can score the popular Frank Mully Pointed-Toe Flats for $36 thanks to a limited-time deal.

Travel could be a good deal this summer. Here's when plane ticket prices will peak.

summer plane travel outfits

Spring is springing and according to Hopper, it’s time to start thinking about your summer vacation plans.

New data from the online booking site shows some favorable trends for travelers in the next few months, including slightly lower airfares compared to 2023, and hotel and car rental prices that are more or less flat year-over-year.

Here’s what you need to know as you prepare to book, whether you’re looking to take a domestic getaway or go on an overseas adventure. It’s also not too late to take advantage of deals on some last-minute trips.

How much are spring and summer plane tickets?

According to Hopper, the best deals right now are on domestic airline tickets. Round-trip flights within the U.S. are averaging $290 in April, but prices are expected to rise in the months ahead.

Hopper’s data shows prices for domestic flights will peak between May and June at $315 on average, and then will gradually fall through the summer, reaching a low of $264 on average in September.

On a call with investors discussing first-quarter earnings Wednesday, Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian said summer travel demand has been pushed forward in recent years due in part to schools, especially in the South, finishing their summer breaks earlier in the year.

Short vs. long cruises: Which one is right for you? Here's how they compare.

This summer will also be a good time to travel internationally, with Hopper data showing fares to most destinations abroad down compared to last year.

“Airfare to international destinations continues to improve following two years of bloated prices due to quickly recovering demand, high fuel prices and supply constraints. Airfare to most major regions of the world has dropped compared to last year with the exception of trips to Canada,” Hayley Berg, Hopper’s chief economist, said in the report. “International fares remain higher than pre-pandemic levels to most regions, as higher fuel prices persist and airlines continue to rebuild capacity to many regions.”

How much will a hotel room for the spring and summer cost?

Hotel prices remain more or less flat compared to the same time last year. Rooms in the U.S. are averaging $206 per night currently, with even better deals available in some trending international destinations like Osaka, Japan and Istanbul, Turkey.

According to Hopper, Las Vegas, New York and Chicago remain popular destinations in the U.S.

Will car rental prices go up this summer?

Car rental prices also haven’t gone up much since last year, averaging $42 per day currently, according to Hopper.

The report shows that most travelers rent a car for about four days and warm weather destinations like Orlando and Los Angeles remain popular pickup points.

Airfare prices are expected to rise as soon as next month as travelers finalize summer plans, according to travel app Hopper. However, they will reach their peak by the end of May.

Hopper lead economist Hayley Berg reported on Tuesday that domestic round trip fares in April will average $290, which is slightly lower than last April. However, at their peak, around the end of May and early June, prices will average $315 per round-trip domestic ticket.

Those prices will fall back to an average of $264 per round trip ticket in the shoulder season, according to Berg. Shoulder season is an industry term for the off travel season. In the fall, it usually spans between September and October.

In terms of international travel, airfare has continued to improve "following two years of bloated prices due to quickly recovering demand, high fuel prices and supply constraints."

The cost of flying to most regions around the world dropped compared with last year, aside from Canada.

However, fares remain higher than pre-pandemic levels "as higher fuel prices persist and airlines continue to rebuild capacity to many regions," Berg said.

Compared with pre-pandemic times, flights to Canada are 32% higher. Meanwhile, flights for Europe and Asia are up 10% and 44%, respectively.

However, even with the higher prices, Berg noted that Asia still remains top of mind for American travelers, specifically Osaka, Japan, and Seoul, South Korea. Fares for such destinations are over $1,300 per round-trip ticket on average.

For Seoul, Hopper said a round trip ticket sitting at $1,463 is considered a "good deal."

Disruption rates:

Berg warned that travelers should also expect disruption rates to increase as peak travel months like June, July and August approach. For instance, last summer, delay rates jumped 25% between March and July.

Summer travel could be extra chaotic as United pilots take unpaid leave and Boeing issues pile up

  • United Airlines has asked its pilots to take unpaid leave this summer and possibly into the fall.
  • Across airlines, summer fliers may see disrupted flight schedules and pricier tickets.
  • In June, 2.5 million passengers went through US security checkpoints.

Insider Today

In an early blow to summer travel, United Airlines has asked its pilots to take an unpaid leave next month, citing delayed aircraft deliveries from Boeing.

In a statement to CNBC , United confirmed the "voluntary, unpaid time off."

In a note sent to pilots on Friday, the United chapter of the Air Line Pilots Association wrote that the union expects the airline to extend the unpaid leave offer into this summer "and potentially into the fall."

United employed 13,831 pilots in 2022, per the company's most recent data .

The union note on Friday said flight forecasts have been "significantly reduced" due to changes to United's Boeing 787 and 737 deliveries and that the airline expects the issues to impact other fleets.

This summer was scheduled to be United's busiest in a decade. In January, the company said it would add over 100 daily departures from American hubs and announced its largest trans-Atlantic schedule.

Related stories

The specific changes to United's summer flight lineup were not immediately available. The company did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider sent outside normal business hours.

Boeing's troubles could hurt other airlines' passengers this summer. Fliers may see rescheduled flights as airlines pull planes out of service and revamp schedules to account for new plane delays. Prices may go up, too: the CEO of Ryanair, which only flies Boeing 737s, said last month that ticket prices may rise 10% because the company won't have all the planes it ordered on time.

Summer is one of the busiest periods for American carriers. June 2023 saw an average of 2.56 million passengers per day passing through Transportation Security Administration checkpoints, making it the busiest month at US airports since July 2019.

Boeing's ills hit airlines across the world

United and other airlines, including Southwest Airlines and Ryanair, are scrambling to work with reduced deliveries from Boeing, as the US plane manufacturer focuses on fixing safety lapses after the January 5 flight Alaska Airlines door blowout accident . Boeing's 737 planes are most commonly used on domestic routes.

"It's a simple matter of supply and demand," aviation analyst Richard Aboulafia told BI last month . "With new aircraft production heavily constrained, especially at Boeing, and a limited number of older aircraft that can be kept longer in service, and continued very strong demand, prices are likely to increase."

Scott Kirby, the CEO of United, has been vocal about his frustrations with Boeing and in January said he is looking to change the planes the company orders in the future. New planes could alleviate United's problems in future years, but they would not be delivered in time for this summer's travel rush.

The Boeing plane delay comes amid turmoil for United's operations. Last week, the US Federal Aviation Administration said it was increasing scrutiny of United to ensure the airline's compliance with safety regulations . The oversight follows a series of safety incidents in the last month alone, including an overflowing toilet on a flight from Frankfurt, a missing external panel in a plane that landed in Oregon, and a tire lost after takeoff on a flight from San Francisco to Japan.

Last month, over 1,000 flights were delayed or cancelled — from a combination of weather, technology issues, and airspace constraints — disrupting spring break travel plans around the US.

Watch: Thousands of bags pile up at US airports after flight cancellations

Good place for both winter and summer

We have been here during summer and this is our first time during winter. Great for kids. A lot of things to do: skating, sledge, downhill sliding. We have also had lunch in a nice restaurant pomestye park. We didn't go hiking this time but during summer, the park provides very picturesque trails.

Delta Air Lines posts a narrow Q1 profit and says travel demand remains strong despite flight scares

Delta Air Lines eked out a narrow first-quarter profit and said Wednesday that demand for travel is strong heading into the summer vacation season, with travelers seemingly unfazed by recent incidents in the industry that ranged from a panel blowing off a jetliner in flight to a tire falling off another plane during takeoff.

Delta reported the highest revenue for any first quarter in its history and a $37 million profit. It expects record-breaking revenue in the current quarter as well. The airline said that second-quarter earnings will likely beat Wall Street expectations.

CEO Ed Bastian said Delta’s best 11 days ever for ticket sales occurred during the early weeks of 2024.

If travelers are worried about a spate of problem flights and increased scrutiny of plane maker Boeing , “I haven’t seen it,” Bastian said in an interview. “I only look at my numbers. Demand is the healthiest I’ve ever seen.”

A slight majority of Delta’s fleet of more than 950 planes are Boeing models, but in recent years it has bought primarily from Airbus , including a January order for 20 big Airbus A350s. As a result, Delta will avoid the dilemma facing rivals United Airlines and American Airlines, which can’t get all the Boeing planes they ordered. United is even asking pilots to take unpaid time off in May because of a plane shortage.

“Airbus has been consistent throughout these last five years (at) meeting their delivery targets,” Bastian said.

Delta does not operate any Boeing 737 Max jets, the plane that was grounded worldwide after two fatal crashes in 2018 and 2019, and which suffered the panel blowout on an Alaska Airlines flight this year. However, the Atlanta-based airline has ordered a new, larger version of the Max that still hasn’t been approved by regulators. Bastian said Delta will be happy to use the Max 10 when they arrive.

While Delta has largely dodged headaches caused by Boeing, it faces other obstacles in handling this summer’s crowds.

Delta is lobbying the federal government to again allow it to operate fewer flights into the New York City area. Otherwise, Delta could lose valuable takeoff and landing slots.

The Federal Aviation Administration granted a similar request last summer and even extended it until late October . The FAA said the relief helped airlines reduce canceled flights at the region’s busy three main airports by 40%.

Peter Carter, an executive vice president who oversees government affairs, said Delta and other airlines need another waiver permitting fewer flights this summer because the FAA still doesn’t have enough air traffic controllers.

“Absent the waiver, I think we would have, as an industry, some real challenges in New York,” Carter said.

Airlines for America, a trade group of the major U.S. carriers, is also pushing for a waiver from rules on minimum flights in New York. The FAA said it would review the request.

Delta customers will see another change — a new system for boarding planes . Instead of boarding by groups with names such as Diamond Medallions, Delta Premium Select and Sky Priority, passengers will board in groups numbered one through eight. The airline says it will be less confusing.

“When you have a number and you’re standing in line, we are all trained to know when it’s our turn,” Bastian said.

The change won’t alter the pecking order of when each type of customer gets to board. Those with the cheapest tickets, Basic Economy, will still board last.

Delta’s first-quarter profit follows a $363 million loss a year ago, when the results were weighed down by spending on a new labor contract with pilots.

“We expect Delta to be one of the few airlines to report a profit in the March quarter,” TD Cowen analyst Helane Becker said even before Delta’s results were released.

Delta said that excluding special items, it earned 45 cents per share. Analysts were expecting 36 cents per share, according to a FactSet survey.

The airline forecast second-quarter earnings of $2.20 to $2.50 per share. The Wall Street consensus was $2.22 per share. The company stood by its forecast of full-year earnings between $6 and $7 per share.

First-quarter revenue rose 8%, to $13.75 billion. Putting Delta’s Pennsylvania refinery aside, operating revenue was slightly more than analysts predicted. The airline said second-quarter revenue will be 5% to 7% higher than a year ago.

The airline reported that large corporate customers — who were slower than leisure travelers to resume flying after the coronavirus pandemic — are spending more on travel, including firms in technology and financial services.

Delta has boosted profit by focusing more on premium passengers who pay the highest fares, and raking in money from a credit-card partnership with American Express.

Costs could rise too, however. Jet fuel is higher than it was a year ago, following a run-up in oil prices, and Delta is spending more on aircraft maintenance this year.

Shares of Delta Air Lines Inc. fell 2.3% by the end of regular trading Wednesday.
