The nation is fortunate to have many spectacular national parks and game reserves. There are four circuits that uniquely divide the country. Numerous National Parks on the country's Northern Circuit are truly a blessing as they are teeming with wild untamed animals. Eighty percent of all safari travelers to Tanzania reserve itineraries through the northern circuit national parks.

World-renowned parks including the Serengeti, Arusha, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, and others are available for exploration in the northern circuit locations. African Big Five and other more untamed species can be seen frequently in Tanzania's northern circuit national parks. • Ngorongoro Crater : The world’s largest inactive cauldron-like hollow volcano with a crater floor covering over 100 sq. miles and almost 0.4 miles deep. This crater in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area has over 7,000 wildebeest, 6,000 black spotted hyenas, 4,000 zebras, 300 Elephants and 55 Lions.
• Kilimanjaro National Parl: At 644 sq miles, the park contains the largest free standing volcanic mass in the world and the highest mountain in Africa, also home to numerous giraffes, warthogs, water buffaloes, colobus monkeys, dik dik and many birds.
• Selous Game Reserve: Also known as Nyerere NP, this is Tanzania’s largest national park at about 12,000 sq miles, set in southern Tanzania with majestic waterways, notably the Rufiji river and interconnected lakes attracting wildlife galore.
• Mikumi National Park: A large park at 1,250 sq miles, 190 miles from the coastal city of Dar es Salaam, Mikumi NP has numerous waterholes, crowded with hippos, elephants and buffaloes.

Tour Details

Day 1: arrival arusha - welcome to tanzania.

Arrive at Kilimanjaro Airport and be greeted by our representative who will transfer you to Mount Meru Hotel when you can relax from your flight.

Day 2: Tarangire National Park

Start your Tanzania and Zanzibar Safari and take a morning game drive to Tarangire National Park where you will discover the giant termite mounds and baobab trees of Tarangire. This park, which is home to elephants, sports a particularly dense wildlife of prey and hunters. End your day with a drive and over night at the Manyara Serena Lodge.

Meals Included

Day 3: tarangire to serengeti national park.

Enjoy a delicious breakfast before leaving Manyara for Serengeti National Park. Where along the way you will pass the Ngorongoro Crater for a view. As you drive to Serengeti, along the way view the park’s resident and migratory animals. Species commonly seen in the Serengeti include wildebeest, cheetah, zebra, lion, giraffe, impala, topi, and leopard. The Serengeti Serena Lodge is where you will spend the next two days.

Day 4: Safari in Serengeti National Park

You’re given two full days in the Serengeti to enjoy with game drives. Drive directly to Ngorongoro and descend crater for a whole day game drive. It is the largest unbroken caldera in the world, famous for the variety of animals found there, including flocks of flamingo that populate the Soda Lake. You will overnight at the Ngorongoro Serena Lodge.

Day 5: Ngorongoro National Park

Proceeding your Tanzania and Zanzibar safari, we will take you back to the Ngorongoro for more exploring of the denser parts of the crater, where hopefully you may be able to observe animals hunting their prey. The entire day is spent on the crater floor viewing lion, hyena, wildebeest, zebra, black rhinoceros, and many species of small antelopes Enjoy a delicious dinner on your last night at the Ngorongoro Serena Lodge.

Day 6: Ngorongoro to Arusha - Fly to Zanzibar

The next day leave Ngorongoro and drive to Arusha where a hot lunch will be waiting for you then on to Arusha airport or JRO and fly to Zanzibar where you will be picked up and transferred to Karafuu Beach resort for dinner and overnight.

Day 7: Relaxation and Experience Zanzibar

Spend the next three days relaxing at the beach and exploring the island take your first day rest and recuperate from your safari adventures.

Day 8: Relaxation and Experience Zanzibar

Go for a walk in stone town and take in the architecture left behind by the Arabs when the island functioned as the capital of Oman. Enjoy a beautiful lunch at one of the many treasured restaurants and take a sunset stroll on one of the many beaches.

Day 9: Relaxation and Experience Zanzibar

Try your hand some water sports such as kayaking or maybe windsurfing, be sure to enjoy your last day on Zanzibar.

Day 10: Fly Zanzibar to Dar El Salam

Fly back to Dar El Salam where you will overnight at Ramada Resort and have the freedom to explore the local life of the city.

Day 11: Dar El Salaam - Fly Back Home

Saadani Elephants

From 2010-2014 our Saadani Research Centre was the hub for an elephant collaring programme devised to assess the viability of traditional corridors used by the great pachyderms to move between protected areas. The work has vastly improved our understanding of the elephant population of Saadani and has led to us lobbying hard to protect vital habitat.

Your safari through the Serengeti and Ngorongoro includes an overnight camp at the edge of a crater where lions, buffalo, and zebra like to wander. Then jet over to Zanzibar where historic towns and blissful beaches await. Zanzibar | the areas, where is zanzibar, getting to zanzibar, the best beaches on zanzibar.

• Nungwi and Kendwa (North) -  The best beaches on the island. Really beautiful and classic Indian Ocean paradise. Non-tidal turquoise waters and really powdery white sands. Can sometimes be busy.
• Pongwe (East) -  Pongwe sits in a little concave bit of coast line which means the beach is glorious and when the tide isn't completely in, it is seaweed free and very pretty. Not the long sweeping beaches of the north, but a pocket of pure beachy gold. Less busy than the north.
• Paje and Dongwe (East) -  Although tidal, here sit some of our favourite luxury boutique hotels. You would not be let down here in terms of accommodation. The beach is beautiful, but getting your toes wet is a bit harder than in the northern Nungwi regions as the sea is further out and very tidal. 
• Matemwe (North-East) -  Slightly to the east of Nungwi, Matemwe is slightly tidal but when the tide is in there are a few of our favourite fantastic value accommodation options.

• Baraza  - A true Zanzibar style beach resort. A fantastic romantic spa and a kids club makes it a fabulous choice for both honeymoons and families alike. A bigger hotel, but with everything you could need for a luxurious stay on the island.
• White Sands  – Located on the south east coast, White Sands is perfect for families who want a bit of luxury and their own space. You get a whole villa to yourself if you have 4 people and your own pool and living room area.

• Spice Tour –  Zanzibar is known to be the spice island. For those interested in trees, spices (for obvious reasons) and where everything is from. Learn about all the different spices in Zanzibar from their origins.
• Prison Island Tour –  Contrary to the name, no prisoners have lived on this island. It used to be an isolated area for the yellow fever epidemic sufferers, but now it is home to the Aldabra giant tortoises which is the main attraction of the island. A short 30 minute boat ride from Stone Town.
• Stone Town  Tour – Take a guided tour around the cobbled streets of charismatic Stone Town and learn about Zanzibar’s rich history and culture.
• Or just relaxing –  The perfect place for it.

Do i need to arrange a flight to zanzibar.

It is your choice. Lion King helps to organise flights for many of our guests, but there is little financial advantage to this. If you choose to arrange your own flights to Zanzibar, we recommend that you speak to your Tour Consultant before doing so. They will be able to advise you about timings etc. There are several international airlines that fly into Zanzibar, so it is possible to begin or end your Safari package there. On average, a one-way flight between Arusha and Zanzibar costs U$D 200 per person and takes about one hour.

Can you go on Tanzania Safari from Zanzibar?

Yes! It is possible to start (or finish) your Safari & Beach Tour in Zanzibar. There are several international airlines that fly to Zanzibar and this option can often reduce the need for internal connection flights. For example, you can fly into Kilimanjaro (JRO), go on safari, take an internal flight to Zanzibar and then fly home from Zanzibar International Airport (ZNZ). Most guests prefer to finish the holiday in Zanzibar, but the choice is yours.

Which part of Zanzibar has the best beach?

Different coastlines in Zanzibar offer different things and should be considered when planning your trip.

The East coast of Zanzibar is lined with long stretches of powder-white beaches. Most beaches have a very shallow gradient and as a result, the tide goes out a long way, making it difficult to swim directly from the beach.

On the North Coast, ocean swimming is much less susceptible to the tides. Smooth beaches and white sand make for dazzling days in the sun. Here the beaches are much busier. There are a large number of guest houses, bars, shops and restaurants. The setting and the beaches are beautiful, but it lacks the tranquility of other parts of the island.

The South-West Coast has fewer places to stay and some of the island’s finest marine experiences. The South-West doesn’t have the iconic stretches of powder sand beaches, but visitor numbers are lower.

How to book activities in Zanzibar

Please look Zanzibar beach holiday for information about the different kinds of activities you may wish to do on Zanzibar. Your Tour consultant can help you to plan and book activities once you have confirmed your accommodation, but the easiest way to do it is to ask your hotel to organise once you arrive. Nearly all activities can be booked at short notice and you pay the hotel directly. When is the best time to visit Tanzania?

“A Tanzania safari can be booked throughout the year, but the best time depends on your interests. If seeing the wildebeest migration is the main focus of your visit, you will have to plan carefully. June to October is the best period to see the migration in the Serengeti, but you’ll have to stay in different areas of the park at different stages of the migration, and as this all depends on the rain, this isn’t completely dependable. If you want to get away from the crowds, you should book your accommodation in the Serengeti away from the wildebeest migration. The wettest months are March to May, and any safari might be compromised at this time.”

Why visit Tanzania, what are the major attractions?

“Tanzania is the quintessential safari destination, offering both quality and quantity. The wildlife viewing is superb and there is just so much choice in terms of places to visit and things to do. In fact, it would be hard to experience all of the highlights even in three Tanzania holidays, let alone one. There are three distinct safari circuits: the most popular Northern safari circuit includes famous places such as the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. The lesser-known Southern circuit centers on Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) and Ruaha National Park. The off-the-beaten-track Western circuit includes Katavi National Park and the chimpanzee reserves on the shore of Lake Tanganyika. Avid mountain climbers might be surprised to learn the highest peak in Africa is in Tanzania. Mt Kilimanjaro lies between Kenya and Tanzania but is climbed from the Tanzanian side.”

How much does a Tanzania safari cost?

“Tanzania tours are not geared toward big groups. The best way to see the parks is on a bespoke safari for two or four people who book together as a family or group of friends, though that obviously comes at a price. You should budget a starting price of US$500 per person per day, but it is difficult to put a specific figure on a trip, as a lot of variables need to be taken into account. For example, camping safaris are generally cheaper than lodge safaris. Conversely, the Serengeti and some other parks in the Northern circuit have big hotels that are much cheaper than the small, exclusive lodges and tented camps – although the latter are often more basic. The season makes a big difference too. Discounted rates apply if you are willing to travel in the rainy season, while you’ll pay a premium to visit during the height of the wildebeest migration.”

How is the wildlife viewing in Tanzania?

“The wildlife viewing in Tanzania is superb. A Tanzania safari in the Northern circuit takes in Lake Manyara and Tarangire National Parks, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater. Any of these parks offer fantastic game viewing, although some of it is seasonal. Doing the whole circuit enhances the experience as you’ll be going through a variety of habitats and environments. Due to the sizes of the parks, it is possible to get away from the crowds, but as the Northern circuit is the most popular circuit, you will be surrounded by other tourists at times. If you really want to get away from all that, you can visit the Southern circuit, where the game viewing is slightly more challenging but very good all the same. This circuit is perhaps more suited to repeat Africa visitors who are less driven to tick off the Big Five.”

How safe is Tanzania for tourists?

“Tanzania has a slick and experienced tourist industry, and a Tanzanian safari overall is very safe. That said, there is a lot of petty crime in big cities such as Dar es Salaam, so walking around alone isn’t recommended. Tourists sometimes get targeted in Arusha and other urban tourist hot spots, but most of the time the hassle is benign and is really just touts wanting to sell things (anything from safaris to beaded necklaces). Being firm and standing your ground is usually all it takes to diffuse any situation. In any case, most people on Tanzanian tours don’t spend very much (or any) time in urban centers, so none of this is likely to be a concern.”

How do I select a reliable Tanzanian tour operator?

“Tanzania is a popular African safari destination and many large reputable operators working in Africa sell Tanzanian holidays. Most operators offer pretty much the same packages and the differences will mostly lie in the quality of the guides and vehicles. If you have a special interest, you might want to do some research and look for operators catering to that; for example, some packages are more geared toward walking safaris or fly camping (where the whole camp gets set up for you at a special private campsite). “The safari industry in Tanzania is well established and there is a good variety of accommodation on offer. Going with an outfitter offering comfortable camping safaris is not only the most budget-friendly way to travel, but it also adds to the sense of adventure. If real camping isn’t your thing, but you like the romance of tented accommodation, there are tented camps (with actual beds and flushing toilets inside) offering different levels of luxury. For those visitors that prefer to spend their evenings in less of a bush environment, there are hotels that provide a total disconnect from the countryside, which also means less chance of creepy-crawlies in your room. The current trend, however, is toward exclusive designer lodges blending into the environment and offering an unparalleled level of luxury and service. The sky is the limit!”

When is the best time to visit tanzania.

The best time to visit Tanzania is during the dry season that ordinarily fall  between the months of July and October . The reason why these drier months are great for visiting Tanzania for safari is because firstly; the bushes are less dense than during the rainy season. Secondly because that is the peak for The Great Wildebeest Migration and especially the river crossing.

However, Tanzania can be toured at any time of the year and you can take advantage of better rates and less crowds in the parks, if you decide to visit in November to Mid-December as well as the Green season of April – May. If you are interested in seeing the Calving and breeding of the Wildebeest Migration , you will be better off visiting Tanzania in February to March.
