Canadian country artist, Terri Clark (born August 5th, 1968) came storming out of her native land to find success in the North American country charts with her rootsy, honky tonk country.

Born in Montreal, Canada, yet raised in Alberta, CLark grew up amongst a musical family, with her grandparents being former country stars, Ray and Betty Gauthier. Learning through her family's musical tradition, Clark sought to pursue a career of her own, moving to Nashville, US in 1987.

After waltzing in to Tootsie's Orchid Lounge, a Nashville venue, Clark asked if she could sing, immediately impressing the management and landing herself a job as the club house's singer. Despite gaining this position, Clark struggled to break into the music industry for several years but eventually landed a recording contract with Mercury Records in 1994.

Her eponymous debut arrived the following year, finding hits right from the outset. The singles "Better Things to Do," "When Boy Meets Girl" and "If I Were You" all broke into the Top Ten, as well as being certified Gold. A support slot for George Strait also helped raise her profile, eventually finding herself nominated for a host of awards at the Academy of Country Music's annual ceremony in 1996. She walked away with awards for 'Album of the Year' and 'Single of the Year,' as well as Billboard Magazine's 'Top New Female Country Artist' award.

Clark's second record, "Just The Same," appeared later in 1996, featuring the hit single, "Poor Poor Pitiful Me." After two more successful albums, Clark released her greatest hits album, celebrating her ten years in the music industry. Following personal difficulties, Clark left Mercury Records, instead deciding to form her own label, Bare Tracks.

"Long Way Home" appeared in 2009, alongside the live DVD, "Live at Cedar Creek" released a year later. In 2011, Clark again moved labels, to the independent Humphead, for her eight record, "Roots and Wings." Next, she recorded an album of duets, "Classic" in 2012, featuring Reba McEntire, Jann Arden and Tanya Tucker amongst others. Again releasing records on her own imprint, her tenth record, "Some Songs," hit the shelves in 2014, finding success on country radio stations.

Live reviews

Canadian Terri Clark is one of the hit makers amongst the country and western music scene. Today I’m going to be discussing one of her more intimate performances where she accompanies herself on an acoustic guitar. She explains before that she is going to take this sold out audience on a journey back to the beginning before she had a guitar. If there is anything this woman can do then it is definitely perform. She has some fantastic chops and some great hooks up her sleeve. “Mama He’s Crazy” is a stunning down tempo song that shows off her stunning voice, with her humble vibrato. It is one of those moments between the artist and the audience where everyone is aware that it’s quite a ‘pinch yourself’ moment. She rounds off this short acoustic set with the mid tempo, “Girls Night Out” which just makes everyone want to do their best hoe down, with one hand in the air. Great vibe this evening.

With songs that never stray into redundancy or sentimentality and a strong, flexible voice that is as effective on anthemic party songs as it is heartfelt ballads, Terri Clark crafted her own boot-stomping niche in the crowded ’90s neotraditionalist space – one that she maintains today, playing steadily in honky-tonks and arenas alike.

Clark is Canadian, and as country as they come: her grandparents were singers too, and opened for George Jones and Johnny Cash among others. She paid her dues singing covers on Lower Broadway for years until songwriter and producer-turned-Mercury Records VP Keith Stegall signed her to a record deal in 1994; numerous hard-swinging country hits followed, as well as three platinum-certified albums that cemented Clark as ’90s country royalty as well as one more crucial example of the era’s women-friendly culture at country radio. Her success above the border has also led to more recognition of the Canuck country scene: She received the Canadian Country Music Association’s President’s Award in 2004, and has won three Juno Awards.

With over two decades worth of records and a glut of classics to choose from, here are some of Terri Clark’s best songs.

20. “A Little Gasoline” (2000)

This leaving song, co-written by Roger Miller’s son Dean and the SteelDrivers’ co-founder Tammy Rogers, is straight country from subject to execution. Clark got in the car and hit the road in catchy and decidedly sing-a-long-ready fashion – and fans loved it, taking the song to No. 13 on Billboard’s country chart.

Terri Clark - A Little Gasoline

19. “No Fear” (2000)

Co-written by Terri Clark with the legendary Mary Chapin Carpenter, this self-actualizing single fit well with the era’s too-briefly ascendant women-centric country culture. Though it didn’t quite hit at radio the way some similarly empowering tracks did, the song is an engaging ode to overcoming from a singer at the height of her vocal and songwriting powers. “I want peace, love and understanding/A stogie and an ice cold beer,” Clark sings in such a way that it’s almost impossible not to feel the same.

18. “If I Were You” (1995)

“You” was the rare solo outing for Terri Clark as a songwriter, and one of just a few lovelorn ballads in her catalog of charting singles. Essentially a sympathetic ode to envy, the song finds Clark skirting ’90s shlock with a heavy dose of pedal steel and convincing pathos. It was the third top-ten hit off her self-titled debut, reaching No. 8 on Billboard’s country chart.

17. “In My Next Life” (2007)

This Terri Clark single apparently didn’t get high enough on the chart to prompt the release of its parent album, which remains in the vault. Which is a shame, because her ability to sell a sassy song about living it up while you can is as strong as ever. Body shots get name-checked in this one, as do cigarettes and bad boys – all things Clark says she’ll avoid next time around (although as much fun as she’s having, it’s hard to believe her).

16. “Now That I Found You” (1998)

Not connected to the Foundations classic with which it mostly shares a name, this swooning love song finds Terri Clark delving uncharacteristically deep into the era’s pop sounds, echoing the balladry of boy bands and pop divas alike. “Found You” was one of the biggest hits of Clark’s career, reaching No. 2 on Billboard’s country chart, and was shortly thereafter covered by two different pop vocal groups. Pedal steel is, again, deployed to keep it firmly country, and Clark offers a compelling, sweet performance as evidence that she had much more to offer than just honky-tonk sass.

Terri Clark - Now That I Found You (Official Video)

15. “Suddenly Single” (1995)

Terri Clark’s debut includes the rare redemptive cheating song, where the victim actually comes out ahead of the man slipping off his golden ring for a night’s dalliances. “For the rest of his life, she’ll haunt his dreams” – there might not be a better comeuppance for lack of fidelity. It’s got all the soaring balladry and emotion of the most iconic country cheating songs, but with a more satisfying resolution.

14. “A Million Ways To Run” (2009)

One of Terri Clark’s most personal songs, written after she’d taken four years off from touring, gotten married and divorced in quick succession, and gotten sober, “Run” is a rare window into the singer-songwriter’s psyche. Starting in an AA meeting and expanding into a recognition of different kinds of addiction and self-destruction, the song, which Clark wrote alone, is ultimately about finding peace and groundedness in community.

13. “She Didn’t Have Time” (2005)

A little bit of Hallmark-ready melodrama in a classic story song package, “Time” is made classic by its sympathetic single mom narrator and some potent details (“He said goodbye…like she’d been some casual friend”). One of her last country chart entries, the compelling power ballad has a happy ending delivered sweetly and sensitively – an emotional gauntlet you’ll be content to get lost in.

12. “Catch 22” (1995)

Terri Clark has occasionally dabbled in social and political commentary, but perhaps nowhere as effectively as in this album cut off of her debut, which she co-wrote. The opening verse effectively outlines the plight of the working man (and woman), and the way that hard work so often backfires: “You’re damned if you don’t and even if you do,” she sings, reframing the cliche around farmers and factory workers as well as lovers.

11. “Neon Flame” (1996)

It’s hard to resist Terri Clark when she’s gone full honky-tonk, and this danceable album cut teems with dark bar references, swinging pedal steel and jangling piano. She’s at her mightiest vocally here on her sophomore album, slip-sliding and occasionally soaring through the melody to great effect. Perhaps too country to have been pushed to radio, the album cut remains a potent example of Clark’s ability to charm on and off of Music Row.

10. “Honky Tonk Song” (2005)

Originally meant to be the title track off Life Goes On , this rabble-rousing song about itself is exactly what its title would suggest: a twangy party-ready song that name-checks any number of classic country tropes in a fresh, fun way. Terri Clark plays up the humor and whimsy of this self-aware track, bending and stretching its notes with ease on a song ostensibly for sad people that almost certainly won’t fail to make you smile.

9. “Poor, Poor Pitiful Me” (1996)

Terri Clark took a stab at the song that Linda Ronstadt turned into a classic almost two decades prior, and the result more than stood on its own, with Clark taking it to No. 5 on Billboard’s country chart (Ronstadt’s version stalled at No. 46). In place of Ronstadt’s rockish affect, Clark offers full-on twang, and skirting a true yodel as she hits every note with ease and attitude.

Terri Clark - Poor, Poor Pitiful Me (Official Video)

8. “Better With My Boots On” (2014)

This song, one of Terri Clark’s later outings, offers punchy country rock that would fit in perfectly on the radio if they had given it a shot. She co-wrote this one about digging her heels in wearing (what else) cowboy boots with anthemic flair: “Best $100 I ever spent,” she sings, shrouding heartbreak in protective footwear. Almost 20 years into her career, she still sounds ready to rock a stadium without breaking a sweat.

7. “I Just Wanna Be Mad” (2002)

Here, Terri Clark sings a backhanded love song about what it takes to make long-term relationships work, and how you can be furious at someone and love them dearly at the same time. The song was the first single off her fifth album Pain to Kill , and marked a shift: Clark did not co-write it nor did she have credits on most of the album, which was a departure from her consistent co-writes on previous releases. It sounds completely in line, though, with the candid, smart tone of her songwriting, all real talk and earnest emotion at once.

Terri Clark - I Just Wanna Be Mad

6. “Cure For The Common Heartache” (1998)

This heartbreak waltz is as traditional as it gets, complete with enthralling high harmonies courtesy of Alison Krauss and a murder’s row on the co-writing credits, including veteran writer Leslie Satcher and singer-songwriter Melba Montgomery. It might have easily been released when Montgomery was just starting out in the early ’60s, but still doesn’t sound overly nostalgic – just potent and evocative, like the very best of the genre.

5. “Girls Lie Too” (2004)

More than a little saucy – like, say, the Hooters wings that get namechecked in the lyrics – “Girls Lie Too” has a sharp conceit and a bright, radio-friendly sheen. “Size don’t matter anyway,” she sings with a wink. “We like your friends and we love your mom…” The song pushed country music’s often tightly-sealed envelope all the way to No. 1 on Billboard’s country chart, marking Terri Clark’s second time riding a sassy sing-a-long to the top.

Terri Clark - Girls Lie Too (Closed Captioned)

4. “I Wanna Do It All” (2003)

An exuberant anthem for embracing possibilities (and rejecting the doldrums of 9-5 work), this song finds Terri Clark working in the rock-tinged, arena-ready lane paved by fellow Canadian country star Shania Twain. Bright and fun, the passport-stamping tune will have anyone (and in particular, women) believing that they can actually have it all. One of her last major hits, the song reached No. 3 on Billboard’s country charts and helped prove that Clark’s impact would not be limited to the ’90s.

3. “When Boy Meets Girl” (1995)

Just Terri Clark’s second single, this song about young love has a hard twang and easy assurance worthy of any Music Row veteran. The singer co-wrote the track with the same collaborators found across much of her self-titled debut: Tom Shapiro (“Ain’t Nothin’ Bout You,” “Never Give Up On a Good Thing”) and Chris Waters. Full of both fiddle and cowbell, the knowing, playful song fits perfectly in line with coming-of-age classics like Trisha Yearwood’s “She’s In Love WIth The Boy” and Sara Evans’ “Suds In The Bucket.”

2. “You’re Easy On The Eyes” (1998)

The first of Terri Clark’s two Billboard Country No. 1 songs, “Eyes” was written by Clark with her by then long-favored collaborators, Tom Shapiro and Chris Waters. The song is an upbeat kiss-off to some n’er-do-well ex, full of classic ’90s country touches and catchy riffs – it’s two-steppable, but has a groove that translates outside of the honky-tonks too.

1. “Better Things To Do” (1995)

Terri Clark’s debut single immediately set her apart, both with its humor and wit and with her low, rich, powerful delivery. She co-wrote the song, setting a high bar for herself as both writer and singer. “Better Things,” the rare happy break-up song, landed at No. 3 on Billboard’s country chart.

Reba McEntire will hit the road this fall with Terri Clark: 'Gals gotta stick together!'

terri clark on tour

Reba McEntire believes "that us gals gotta stick together” in country music. And she walks the walk, too: McEntire picked all female artists to support her on tour this year. Before she became a headliner, the Country Music Hall of Famer never had the opportunity to open for a woman.

For her next tour, McEntire will do the same, asking longtime friend and fellow country music singer Terri Clark to support her on the road. USA TODAY can exclusively reveal that McEntire is hitting the road again for a new leg of Reba: Live in Concert. The 17-date arena tour kicks off Oct. 13 in Lafayette, Louisiana. It wraps Nov. 19 in Wichita, Kansas. Tickets go on sale Friday.

“Terri and I have toured before," McEntire, 67, told USA TODAY. “One tour we were with Brad Paisley . So we called it the ‘Two Hats and a Redhead tour.’"

Surprise!  Reba McEntire reveals her crazy cameo in 'Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar'

McEntire was in a good mood as she chatted from Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she’s preparing to shoot Season 3 of ABC's “Big Sky.” Her tour that took place earlier this year had been delayed two years by the pandemic. As she was rehearsing for the first part of Reba: Live in Concert back in 2020, she lost her mother. And then, the world shut down.

“I was in Oklahoma helping my brother and sisters take care of Momma, flying back and forth to Nashville (for) rehearsals,” McEntire recalls. “She passed in the middle of March, and I went back home for the funeral. That’s when COVID broke out. We didn’t even get to have a funeral.”

McEntire’s mother, Jacqueline , died of bladder cancer at 93.

“You talk about tailspin? Everybody was like, ‘What’s going on? What’s COVID?’ ” she says. “And here we are, two years later, getting to do a show that everybody was really excited about. It was better than any of us could’ve imagined.”

The first leg of her tour concluded March 19. She released a gospel album, “My Chains Are Gone,” days later. Then on March 27, she returned to the Academy Awards to perform her Oscar-nominated song “Somehow You Do,” written by Diane Warren for the film “Four Good Days.” The track lost to the James Bond theme “No Time to Die,” but chances are, you probably remember only one moment from the award show.

Despite the loss, and The Slap, McEntire recalls that she “had a blast,” but admits it was a little emotional. She last sang at the awards in 1991, nine days after she lost eight members of her band in a plane crash.

Kelly Clarkson is 40 and keeping it real:  See her best quotes on life, motherhood, divorce

McEntire's combination of resiliency and talent puts her in a rarified air: She’s scored a top 10 hit in five consecutive decades on Billboard's country airplay chart. George Jones, Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton are the only other artists who’ve accomplished the feat.

“Well, I said I’ve been around a long time!” she jokes about the accomplishment. But McEntire is candid reflecting on her longevity.

“Great songs, hard work, curiosity, wanting to do it,” she listed off the traits that have gotten her to this point, in addition to the team around her. “I’m very competitive, I always have been.”

She also believes in that ‘have fun’ factor.”

“Everybody knows that I want to have fun doing what I’m doing. I want to do work that’s fun.”

McEntire has had plenty of fun this year. She just returned from Canada, where she filmed her next Lifetime movie, “Reba McEntire’s The Hammer,” about a real-life Nevada judge. And she’ll continue to film “Big Sky” in October and November, in between tour stops.

“Neil (Robison), my hair and makeup guy, always says, ‘Be careful what you ask for and be specific,’" McEntire recalls with a laugh. “So we’ll get back with you and see how things are going about the first of December!”

Clark, Adams, Jeffries, Deputy Heads of EPA, Education, Wrap up STEAM Day 2024

April 18 , 2024.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Democratic Whip Katherine Clark (MA-5) joined Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, Ph.D. (NC-12), and Congressman French Hill (AR-2), on behalf of the Congressional Bipartisan HBCU Caucus they co-chair, to welcome attendees to the Seventh Annual STEAM Days of Action, which began with a reception last night, Wednesday, in the Rayburn House Office Building, and concluded with an all-day event at the Library of Congress today.

Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, EPA Deputy Administrator Janet McCabe, U.S. Department of Education Deputy Secretary Cindy Marten, over a dozen Members of Congress and other leaders from HBCUs, businesses and non-profits also joined for a series of discussions and statements.

“America’s HBCUs are renowned for the community bonds they forge, the pathways to opportunity they pave for Black and Brown students, and the talented STEAM professionals they graduate every year,”  said Democratic Whip Katherine Clark.  “I am proud to join with HBCU Caucus Chair Adams in welcoming our nation’s HBCU leaders to the U.S. Capitol for this STEAM Day of Action. Working together, we will continue fighting to invest in HBCUs, lift up students, and ensure American talent remains unrivaled around the world.”

“I am so proud of the progress made and discussions we held at this year’s STEAM Days of Action program,” said Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, Ph.D., Democratic Co-Chair of the Bipartisan HBCU Caucus. “I want to thank Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Democratic Whip Katherine Clark, Deputy Administrator McCabe, and Deputy Secretary Marten, and all of my congressional colleagues for joining us and discussing how to direct more resources to HBCUs, protect and serve the communities they come from, and open more paths for their students. I also want to thank the business, non-profit, and university leaders who joined us and shared their ideas with everyone here at STEAM Days. In the 118th Congress, it is imperative that we continue convening robust discussions with key policymakers and appropriators to find more ways to support our HBCUs.”

“I’m thankful to Rep. Alma Adams for her incredible leadership on behalf of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, because when HBCUs succeed, America succeeds,” said Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries. “This STEAM conference is so incredibly important in making sure that we provide them with all the resources necessary to access the partnerships so that they can contribute in these areas of human endeavor.”

“I am thrilled to join Representative Adams and the bipartisan HBCU Caucus to celebrate the next generation of leaders in science, technology, engineering, art, and math,” said EPA Deputy Administrator Janet McCabe. “Through our first-ever HBCU-MSI Federal Advisory Committee, President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, and technical assistance programs, EPA is solidifying our partnership with minority-serving institutions to ensure that all Americans have equal access to critical environmental and public health protections and economic and educational opportunities.”

“I want to congratulate Congresswoman Adams on her 7th Annual STEAM Days and her decades of unwavering championship for HBCU schools, infrastructure, innovation and belonging in STEM spaces for all students,” said Department of Education Deputy Secretary Cindy Marten. “In order to be competitive in the economy of the future, we must work together to fund excellent educational opportunities at every level, with an intentional focus on equity. The Department of Education is committed to ensuring HBCUs have the resources they need and deserve to fulfill their mission and serve our nation.”

“Today, the Bipartisan HBCU Caucus welcomed academic, business, and thought leaders to Washington to participate in the seventh annual STEAM Days of Action,” said Congressman French Hill, Republican Co-Chair of the Bipartisan HBCU Caucus. “This event brings together dedicated supporters of HBCUs to talk about the challenges and successes of growing STEM and arts academic programming at our institutions. The event also welcomes those from the business community to connect with those from the colleges and universities to encourage them to build collaborative partnerships and position the next generation of students for success in STEM fields.”

The STEAM Days event included highly informative sessions with EPA Deputy Administrator Janet McCabe, and Department of Education Deputy Secretary Cindy Marten. McCabe and Rep. Adams talked about the ways HBCU graduates can access and benefit from the President’s Justice40 initiative, which ensures at least 40% of the benefits from the job-generating Inflation Reduction Act go to historically disadvantaged communities. During the panel moderated by recent Hampton University graduate, Jessica Simmons, Marten and Rep. Adams discussed the many ways the Department of Education can help direct more resources to HBCUs, including over $7 billion that the White House has already sent to HBCU campuses.

In his opening remarks, Congressman French Hill highlighted the impacts of HBCUs as economic engines for their local communities and for the wider U.S. economy. Congresswoman Terri Sewell (AL-07) also brought remarks, followed by a lunch panel featuring representatives from TIAA, IBM NCA&T State University, Delaware State University, and the Pathways Foundation, who discussed what organizations, schools and universities are doing in the STEM space new opportunities for students and their universities.

Reps. Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) and Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01) also joined Rep. Adams for a panel to discuss ways to appropriate more funding to support HBCUs over the long term.

The ongoing efforts by Reps. Adams and Hill, and the Bipartisan HBCU Caucus they co-chair, have coincided with both legislation and significant executive action. These include increased Research and Development and infrastructure funding for HBCUs through the U.S. Department of Education, and increased funding for HBCU line-items such as Title III, Part B, to their highest levels ever.
