Do I need a visa to go to Vietnam?
Aug 10, 2023 • 6 min read
Here's what you need to know about visa requirements for Vietnam © Matthew Micah Wright / Getty Images
Whether you’re planning to bask on the beaches, scramble through the jungles, time-travel in historic townships or set up as a digital nomad in hip Hanoi, the chances are you’ll need a visa to visit Vietnam , except for short visits of less than 15 days.
But there’s good news – while there’s red tape to wriggle through, many nationalities can apply for an E-Visa online, saving time and money.
Vietnam imposed tight COVID restrictions at the height of the pandemic, but these days, you can visit without a Covid test or proof of vaccination. Getting hold of a visa has also become easier, with a dedicated government portal for E-Visa applications. Here’s what you need to know about the entry requirements for Vietnam.
Who needs a visa to visit Vietnam?
Whether or not you need a visa to visit Vietnam will depend on where you live and how long you’re planning to stay. Citizens of neighboring nations in Southeast Asia, including Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Laos, can visit for 30 days without a visa. Citizens of the Philippines can stay for 21 days visa-free, citizens of South Korea and Japan can stay without a visa for 15 days and citizens of Brunei and Myanmar can stay visa-free for 14 days.
How about travelers from Europe?
There’s good news for European travelers – citizens of Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland can travel visa-free for 15 days, reflecting the fact that these countries were among the first foreign powers to recognize the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. British, German, French, Spanish and Russian citizens can also visit without a visa for 15 days.
What about everyone else?
Travelers from the rest of Europe and the rest of the world will need a visa to visit Vietnam, as will travelers from visa-exempt countries visiting for more than the approved number of days, and visitors coming for business or other non-tourism purposes.
How do I get a visa?
There are three ways to get hold of a visa. You can apply the old-fashioned way via the Vietnamese embassy or consulate in your home country (either in person or by post); you can apply for a Visa on Arrival via a Vietnamese visa agency; or you can apply for an E-Visa online before you travel.
How long are Vietnam visas valid?
Standard tourist visas are valid for 30 or 90 days. You can apply for either a single entry or multiple entries, and visas can be extended within Vietnam for an additional fee. For visas for business trips, contact your local Vietnamese embassy or consulate – there’s a list of overseas missions on the website of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs . Digital nomads generally travel on tourist visas.
What are the special visa rules for Phu Quoc Island?
Travelers visiting Phu Quoc – Vietnam’s best-loved tropical island – can stay for up to 30 days visa-free. This applies even if you don’t come from a visa-exempt country, but you must enter Phu Quoc by air. On arrival, you can apply for a visa allowing entry to the rest of Vietnam or stays of more than 30 days.
How do I apply for an E-Visa?
The government’s slightly confusing E-Visa portal is the place to apply for an electronic visa. These visas are valid for 30 days and allow a single entry. You can enter via any approved air, land, or sea border but the port of entry must be listed on your application. The process takes three working days, and the scheme is open to citizens of 80 countries, including most nations in Europe, the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
You’ll need to provide a high-resolution digital passport photo and a scan of your passport ID pages when you apply. Be sure to note down the registration number for your application – you’ll need this to access the downloadable PDF file containing your visa (print and carry two copies with you when you travel).
How do I apply for a Visa on Arrival?
If you fly into Vietnam and land at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City , Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi , or Da Nang International Airport in Da Nang , you can apply for a Visa on Arrival via an online visa agency such as Vietnam Visa Center or Vietnam Visa , but this is a more expensive option.
In fact, this is a two-part process. As well as paying a fee for the online application, you’ll need to pay a second fee on arrival in Vietnam for the visa to be physically added to your passport. The online application takes two working days to process, but you can also pay extra for an expedited one-day or four-hour service.
How much does a Vietnam visa cost?
Visa prices vary depending on where you obtain your visa – travelers who apply online pay different fees to people applying in person or by post at embassies and consulates. For a standard 30-day E-Visa, the fee is US$25. Contact your local embassy or consulate for fees for in-person or postal applications.
To get a Visa on Arrival, you must first pay a fee to a visa agency for a "visa pre-approval letter". For a single-entry visa, this costs around US$17 for 30 days and US$25 for 90 days. For a multiple-entry visa, the fee is around US$20 for 30 days and US$65 for 90 days.
You’ll need to pay a second fee, known as a "Stamping Fee", when you reach Vietnam, using foreign currency. This costs US$25 for a single-entry visa and US$50 for a multiple-entry visa. Different fees apply for visitors from most of Africa and the Middle East and some countries in Asia.
Applying for a visa – the practicalities
Whether you apply online or in person at your local embassy or consulate, your passport should be valid for at least six months after your proposed date of exit from Vietnam. You can enter on or after the date of entry you declare on the application form, but you must still exit by the expiry date printed on your visa.
If you apply in person or by post, you’ll also need to provide some passport photos with your application form. If you apply online, you’ll need high quality digital passport photos; for a Visa on Arrival, bring two 4cm by 6cm photos to hand over when you pay the stamping fee.
Can I extend my visa in Vietnam?
It isn’t too tricky to extend a tourist visa while in Vietnam, but you’ll need to enlist the help of a local visa agency. The procedure can take up to a week and you must apply before your original visa expires. It may be possible to get an extension of 15, 30 or 60 days, depending on the visa you currently hold.
Fees vary from agency to agency and depend on the duration of the extension. In practice, extensions are easiest to arrange in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Danang and Hue . Note that additional fees apply if you apply to extend your visa in a different location to the city where you first arrived in Vietnam.

How to Get 3 Month Tourist Visa to Thailand at the Thai Embassy in Vietnam?
STEP BY STEP PROCESS TO GET 3 MONTH THAI TOURIST VISA IN THAI EMBASSY IN VIETNAM
By Abdel Rahman last updated on March 4, 2022
Since 2015 I have mostly been living or traveling in Southeast Asia and I can’t count how many times I had to answer the question “How come you’ve never been to Thailand?”
My answer to this question was always the same. I didn’t even need to think about it. It was just like one of these automated messages you get to hear from a telemarketing bot. They certainly didn’t think that I needed to get a tourist visa to Thailand first.
So my answer was always like that: “Because I’m from Egypt and Egyptians need visas for Thailand, and yes before you ask; I can’t get a visa for Thailand while traveling, I need to apply from my home country or from a country I’m a resident in, and no I have no plan to be going home soon and I’m not a resident anywhere”
Well, that changed a bit last year when I landed a job in Vietnam and had all of my paperwork done and I was officially a temporary resident in its capital Hanoi.
Guess what was the first thing I did after having my residency? Yes, I emailed the Thai embassy in Vietnam then paid them a visit and got my first Thai visitor visa and I’m writing this post from sunny Chiang Mai at this very moment.

Do You Need a Visa for Thailand?
Most nationals don’t need to apply for a Thai visa as they can get it on arrival or they don’t even need one at all.
However, if you’re from Africa, central Asia or the Middle East then most likely you’ll need to be applying for a visa at one of the Royal Thai Embassies or Consulates. If you’re like me, keep on reading, this article is for you.
Check this comprehensive guide on visas for Thailand to know whether your country is on the list and whether you need a visa other than the Thai visitor visa.

Do You Need to be Vietnam Resident to Get a Thai Tourist Visa?
Citizens of EU countries, the USA, Australia, Japan, and other countries can apply for a tourist visa to Thailand in the Thai embassy in Hanoi without being a resident of Vietnam.
So if you are from one of those countries with a powerful passport, it will probably be a much different experience for you. And you wouldn’t need to submit all these documents to prove that you are a resident in Vietnam.
But citizens of the following countries need to have Vietnam residency to get a Thai tourist visa.
- Central African Republic
- Democratic Republic of Congo and Republic of Congo
- Equatorial Guinea
- Sao Tome and Principe
- Sierra Leone

Process for Tourist Visa to Thailand in Vietnam
I submitted all the required documents to the Royal Thai Embassy in Hanoi.
While submitting, I had a small chat with the visa officer there. She also asked me if I had a police check but I said I didn’t have and she was ok with that.
Tourist Visa to Thailand Fees in Vietnam
Thai Tourist Visa fees were 40 USD for a single-entry tourist visa and 35 USD for a transit visa ( paid in USD).
Getting the 3 Month Visa for Thailand
There are two types of tourist visas to Thailand that you can get in a Thai embassy. One is a single-entry tourist visa valid for 3 months that allows you to stay in Thailand for 60 days and the other one is a multiple entry visa valid for 6 months that allows you 60 days of stay each time.
I obtained a tourist visa that was valid for 3 months with one single entry. The period of stay was to be determined by the immigration officer at the port of entry.
I was able to collect my passport with the visa sticker in the following day.
The visa duration is 60 days on entry. You may extend it for an additional 30 days for a total of 90. And although I got it in Vietnam, another popular option for you is to get the Thai Single Entry Tourist Visa in Laos .
Here is how to get Thailand tourist visa extension . But if you leave Thailand at any time, your single entry tourist visa is canceled, unless you apply for a Thailand re-entry permit.
Thailand Immigration: Arriving in Thailand
I arrived at Chiang Mai International Airport where everything went smoother than expected. I had to fill in a Thai arrival/departure card while aboard my flight and hand it over to immigration alongside my passport.
The immigration officer only asked about my intended period of stay in Thailand to which I answered: “11 days”. He stamped my passport and stapled my departure card in front of my visa page and told me that I can stay for 60 days in Thailand!
Well, I wish I had more time to spend here!
Finally, I have been to the kingdom!

Thai Tourist Visas in Ho Chi Minh City
The Thai Consulate in Ho Chi Minh is in the Quan 3 neighborhood to the west of the city; any taxi or Grab bike should be able to get you there. Get your paperwork prepared in advance to make sure your visit goes smoothly. You’ll need:
- Your passport, with at least 6 months validity remaining
- An application form (or they can provide you with one if you haven’t been able to print one out)
- An inbound and outbound ticket from Thailand (bus, train or air are normally OK)
- 1 passport photo
- The visa fee for your nationality in $US dollars
The consulate is open from 08:30 AM to 11:30 AM Monday to Friday to submit your application, and you return the following day from 13:30 PM to 16:00 PM to pick it up.
What to do with the time between? Visit the old Viet Cong tunnel network at Cu Chi, take a half day trip to the Mekong Delta to the south or just hang out and enjoy the big city atmosphere.
Thai Tourist Visas in Hanoi
The Thai Embassy in Hanoi is near to the Ga Ha Noi railway station; it’s an easy walk from the old town but taxis are pretty affordable in case you don’t fancy the trip. The listed requirements to get a Thai visa are slightly more extensive here, with some travelers being asked for some or all of the following:
- Photocopy of the picture page of your passport
- Travel insurance certificate
- Bank statement
- Addresses in Vietnam or Thailand (this can be your accommodation address)
The embassy is open from 08:30 AM to 12:00 PM Monday to Friday to submit your application, and you return the following day at 16:00 PM to pick it up.
What to do with the time between? Spend hours wandering the beautiful shop fronts of Hanoi Old Town, take a stroll around Hoan Kiem lake or zoom up the coast for a glimpse of Halong Bay. You won’t be bored!
Tips for Applying for a Thai Visa in Vietnam
As is always the case with visas, the rules and regulations can change at a moment’s notice so make sure to check online before you head off. It’s the worst feeling standing outside an embassy begging for a visa with the wrong paperwork- believe us, we’ve done it! Those security guards are pretty unsympathetic…
Our last piece of advice is to remember to check whether you need a visa to get into Vietnam itself. US citizens can currently get a visa on arrival for few bucks, and for other nationalities like the UK there is currently a 15 day visa waiver in force. Make sure you’ve got some US dollars on you when you arrive and you won’t have a problem.
Simple, Hassle-Free and Fun
Overall, Vietnam is a great choice for a Thai visa run. The prices are rock bottom, the food is great and the people are friendly. The only problem you’ll face is wanting to come back to stay for longer!

Thailand Visa Application
Do you need a visa for thailand.
If you're a citizen of Vietnam planning a trip to Thailand, understanding the visa requirements is essential for a smooth entry into the country. This article will guide Vietnamese citizens through the process of obtaining a visa for Thailand and highlight how Siam Legal can assist from start to finish.
Thailand Tourist Visa Exemption for Short Stays
Vietnamese ordinary passport holders are eligible for a tourist visa exemption when visiting Thailand. This exemption is part of the visa waiver program that Thailand offers to citizens of certain countries, including Vietnam. Additionally, due to bilateral agreements between Thailand and Vietnam, those with diplomatic or official passports from Vietnam can visit Thailand without a visa for periods not exceeding 30 days.
Here's what Vietnamese nationals need to know:
- The visa exemption allows Vietnamese nationals flying into Thailand to enter without a visa, on the condition they can show proof of onward or return travel within 30 days.
- For Vietnamese nationals entering Thailand via land or sea from neighboring countries, a 30-day stay is permitted under this exemption, subject to a limit of 2 entries per calendar year.
To ensure a hassle-free visit to Thailand, citizens of Vietnam must:
- Have a passport that is valid for at least 6 months upon entry.
- Show proof of departure within 30 days of arrival (this period can be extended for those seeking to stay longer, under certain conditions).
- Provide evidence of accommodations and sufficient funds to cover the duration of the stay.
Thailand Visas for Extended Stays
Vietnamese citizens wishing to stay in Thailand beyond the 30-day exemption period are required to apply for a tourist visa at a Thai Embassy or Consulate prior to their departure.
Additional Information: Visas are issued by Royal Thai Embassies and Consulates; however, the final authority for entry into Thailand rests with immigration officers at the point of entry. Entry may be denied if the immigration officer has reason to believe the traveler may fall under any of the prohibited categories as outlined in the Immigration Act B.E. 2522 (1979).
Siam Legal offers a comprehensive range of services to ensure compliance with Thailand's regulations for a smooth entry. Understanding the visa requirements and application process is essential for Vietnamese citizens planning a visit to Thailand. By partnering with Siam Legal, you gain access to expert guidance and assistance throughout the visa application process, ensuring a seamless and stress-free travel experience from beginning to end.
Siam Legal International offers services on the following types of visa to citizens of Vietnam:
Vietnamese citizens looking to enter Thailand for specific purposes such as education (ED), business (B), visiting family (O), official duties (F), or religious activities (R) are eligible to apply for the 90-day Non-Immigrant Visa. This visa is a single-entry permit valid for 90 days, allowing holders to stay in Thailand for the duration of its validity. Importantly, this visa category facilitates the application for a work permit and the opening of a bank account in Thailand, providing essential support for your stay.
Designed for Vietnamese citizens planning an extended stay of up to one year, this visa is typically a multiple-entry permit valid for one year. Each entry allows a stay of up to 90 days, necessitating a border run every 90 days for a new entry stamp or re-entry. This visa is ideal for purposes such as education (ED), business (B), visiting family (O), official duties (F), or religious activities (R), offering the flexibility to apply for a work permit, open a bank account, and extend the stay for up to one year on the same visa.
For Vietnamese citizens embarking on business ventures or seeking employment in Thailand, the Thai Non-Immigrant B Visa serves as the key to achieving their professional goals. Beginning with a 90-day single-entry visa, this initial permit is specifically designed for individuals initiating business operations or taking up employment in Thailand. It sets the stage for an extension to a 1-year multiple-entry visa following the acquisition of a work permit, facilitated through sponsorship by a Thai company.
Vietnamese citizens married to Thai nationals can apply for the Thailand Marriage Visa, offering a clear path to residency in Thailand. This visa begins with an initial 90-day stay, which can be extended to a full year and is renewable annually. It supports the familial and professional needs of Vietnamese citizens in cross-national marriages, providing stability and legal support within Thailand.
This visa is tailored for Vietnamese citizens aged 50 and above who seek to retire in Thailand. Applicants must provide proof of financial stability to qualify. The visa grants an initial stay of 90 days, which can be extended up to one year and is intended for retirees without employment intentions. It allows for a serene and extended residency in Thailand, renewable annually.
Offering an exclusive long-term residency option for affluent Vietnamese citizens, extending from 5 to 20 years. Managed by the Thailand Privilege Card Company Limited, the Thailand Elite Visa simplifies the immigration process, eliminates the need for 90-day reporting, and provides multiple entry privileges along with access to luxury perks. It represents an unparalleled choice for those wishing to enjoy an extended, hassle-free stay in Thailand.
By understanding these visa options and preparing the necessary documentation in advance, Vietnamese citizens can ensure a smooth entry into Thailand. Siam Legal is dedicated to providing expert guidance and assistance throughout the visa application process, ensuring a seamless and stress-free travel experience. For the most reliable and up-to-date information, we recommend contacting Siam Legal directly.

If you buy a refundable ticket you could always change it further down the track when your plans coalesce. More expensive but still cheaper than being refused entry and missing your inbound flight .
Passport or travel document with validity not less than 6 months
Visa application form completely filled out
Recent( 4 x 6 cm.) photograph of the applicant
Evidence of travel from Thailand (air ticket paid in full)
Evidence of adequate finance (20,000 Baht per person and 40,000 Baht per family)
Consular officers reserve the rights to request additional documents as deemed necessary
But we did not have everything and it was ok. They gave us the Visa form and even lent us pens to fill it out. It asks for the name and address of a hotel in Thailand , which we didn't know, so they told us just to write Chang Mai, and on another line the name and address, phone number of our hotel in Hanoi. We did not have a flight out of Thailand, but we told them that we are traveling by bicycle and don't know when/where we will leave, and that was ok (we are planning to enter at a land-based crossing, so the question of an airline letting us in did not come up. We arrived with a stack of cash to prove that we had adequate finances, but they preferred a printed out bank statement, and they also requested proof of travel insurance. We were able to get both of these documents from a place just around the corner that had a computer and let us go online and print - 10 pages, 10,000 dong. We submitted everything and they told us to come back the next day at 4pm (but we're going to Halong Bay tomorrow, so they said Monday pick up is fine).
All in all, very easy-going, at least for passports from Canada.
Thanks for the info. I was surprised that they asked you for proof of travel insurance. Did you get this around the corner or just to print out your documents?
By way of update:
I printed my flight itineraries at a little Photo Copy shop on Duong Le Duan - turn left out of embassy onto Ly Thuong Keit, then turn right at the end, the Mecure hotel is on the corner, and just past it is a tiny photo-copy shop which has Internet, computers etc to print docs cheap (5,000VND total).
I submitted the copies of both flights , along with 1 passport photo, passport, application form and US$40 cash. I was given a receipt and told to come back at 4pm the next day. It was 9am when I left.
I returned just after 3PM the next day and collected my passport with new 60 day visa.

I would like to travel to vietnam on a tourist visa, but am not sure of my dates and could be travelling on short notice. Is it possible to get a visa on arrival (looking closely at your website it seems not possible). My other option: can i get an evisa if i'm unsure of my date of arrival? I'm Canadian and will likely be flying to Hanoi from Thailand in May or June.

Schengen-like visa for southeast asia will boost foreign arrivals to vietnam: insiders.
In recent months Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has been discussing the initiative with his counterparts in Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Vietnam, Bloomberg reported.
The joint visa would enable tourists to explore all six Southeast Asian countries on a single visa.
Herbert Laubichler-Pichler, CEO of Alma Resort Cam Ranh in Nha Trang, said that Vietnamese tourism and the hospitality industry would benefit greatly if the proposal was passed.
"This Schengen-type visa would help address concerns Vietnam is losing out on travelers because of relatively cumbersome visa requirements compared to Thailand and Malaysia," he said.
"Thailand continues to attract higher numbers of tourists than Vietnam, so this visa arrangement could help offset that trend by encouraging more tourists who may otherwise visit only Thailand to also visit Vietnam."
Vietnam currently waives visas for 25 countries compared to 162 by Malaysia and 64 by Thailand.
Herbert said Vietnam's big cities with direct flights between these neighboring countries would benefit the most because many people will fly, for example, from Bangkok to HCMC and from Kuala Lumpur to HCMC.
Six Southeast Asian countries welcomed 70 million international visitors in 2023, of which Thailand and Malaysia accounted for more than 50%.
Pham Ha, CEO of luxury cruise operator Lux Group, said that if only 50% of international visitors to Thailand and Malaysia visit Vietnam, the tourism industry will see a "gold mine" that helps boost revenue growth.
Thailand’s selection of five neighboring countries for the joint visa scheme is "not by chance," Ha said.
The four countries that share land borders with Thailand are Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Myanmar. Vietnam is located next to Laos and Cambodia. Tourists can easily visit 6 countries by road or train, an alternative to expensive air travel.
This also helps make tourists' trips more economical, increasing the competitiveness of the six ASEAN countries with major markets such as China, India, South Korea and Japan, Ha added.
Hebert said it’s a very clever move on Thailand’s behalf.
"The Thai authorities know that if the many tourists who have visited Thailand previously come back for a beach break, this visa will encourage them to experience the culture of nearby Vietnam, Laos and/or Cambodia and make the trip overall more interesting," he said.
Among the six countries, Thailand and Malaysia have more flight routes than Vietnam, which however has more flight routes than its two neighbors Laos and Cambodia.
Joining the alliance is an opportunity to help Vietnam become a "hub" in the Indochina region, said Hanoi-based AZA Travel CEO Nguyen Tien Dat, adding tourists who prefer Cambodia or Laos will fly to Vietnam, then to the other two countries.
Countries participating in the joint visa scheme may have difficulty managing and synchronizing the database with the remaining five countries. However, from the perspective of a tourism insider, Ha believed that Vietnam would enjoy more benefits if joining the alliance.
Currently, Vietnam tourism is facing fierce competition in the region. If Vietnam joins the scheme with the scheme, its competitiveness will be stronger.
Dat also analyzed that if Vietnam refuses to join while the remaining five countries agree, the Vietnamese tourism industry will face a new strong competitor - the alliance of the five countries.
"Competing with Thailand is difficult, having to compete with five countries at the same time will be even more tiring."
According to Hebert, this visa scheme would be a game-changer not only for Vietnam but for the Southeast Asian region.
Following Thailand’s proposal, leaders of the five Southeast Asian countries have expressed a positive attitude towards the joint visa initiative, according to Bloomberg .

Thailand’s new Prime Minister is leading a push to establish a revolutionary six-nation visa concept that would allow international tourists the ability to travel seamlessly between Thailand and the fellow Southeast Asian nations of Cambodia , Laos , Malaysia , Myanmar and Vietnam . A six-nation visa is seen as a means of making the region more attractive to international long-haul travelers and would likely see the visa validity period extended from the traditional 30-day period adopted in many countries to a longer 90-day period. The six nations in question welcomed a combined 70 million tourists in 2023 but Thailand is targeting 80 million foreign tourist arrivals to its shores alone by 2027.
In the first quarter of 2024, China was the top contributor to Singapore ’s visitor arrivals, with 723,900 entries. The tally was up 481% year on year and was at 75.4% of 2019’s pre-pandemic first quarter. The Singapore Tourism Board said the Chinese visitors made up 19% of Singapore ’s total of 3.78 million overseas arrivals for the first three months of the year. Total foreign arrivals to Singapore were up 29.7% year on year. The Chinese lead in arrivals coincided with the mutual arrangement for 30-day visa-free travel between the two countries, going into effect February 9.
The four-day period encompassing the Ching Ming Festival resulted in 425,428 tourist arrivals for Macau . The most were on the actual day of the Festival, on April 4th, with 136,363 visitor arrivals. These four days actually had more arrivals than the four-day Easter holiday.
Nepal registered a record-breaking influx of 128,167 tourists in March, a 28.9% increase from March of 2023. The tourist season in Nepal typically starts in February, peaks in March and April, and then gradually decreases. 30,698 tourists arrived from India in March with 12,092 coming from China .

Thailand Leads Push for Six-Nation Visa to Lure Moneyed Tourists
(Bloomberg) -- Thailand is steering an initiative for a joint-visa program with countries that together hosted about 70 million tourists last year as Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin ramps up initiatives to attract more long-haul and high-spending travelers.
Srettha — who’s pledged to elevate Thailand’s status as a tourism hotspot into an aviation and logistics hub — has discussed the Schengen-type visa idea with his counterparts in Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar and Vietnam in recent months. The facility is meant to ensure seamless mobility for travelers among the six neighboring countries.

With most leaders positively responding to the single-visa concept, tourism-reliant Thailand aims to generate more revenue per traveler and cushion its economy from headwinds such as sluggish exports and weak global demand that’s hurt its manufacturing industry.
The six Southeast Asian nations reported a combined 70 million foreign tourist arrivals in 2023, according to official data . Thailand and Malaysia accounted for more than half of the tally, generating about $48 billion in tourism revenue.
The single-visa is the most-ambitious among Srettha’s lineup of tourism initiatives but targeted for the long-term. The industry has served the country well, accounting for about 20% of total jobs and making up about 12% to the nation’s $500 billion economy. Barring the pandemic years, tourism has flourished and provided a cushion against a slump in manufacturing and exports, the traditional bulwarks of the economy.
The tourism industry is upbeat, with Marisa Sukosol Nunbhakdi, a former president of the Thai Hotels Association, saying “a common visa could entice long-haul travelers to make an easier decision.” The visa validity will need to be extended to 90 days from the usual 30-day period to make it attractive, she said.
Srettha’s administration has set a goal of attracting 80 million tourists by 2027. And since taking power about seven months ago, his government has signed a reciprocal visa waiver deal with China — Thailand’s largest market for tourists — and offered temporary visa waivers for travelers from India, Taiwan and Kazakhstan. It’s also mulling a plan to open casinos inside large entertainment complexes and event-based tourism will help the country generate more revenue.
If done right, the benefits of visa-free travel won’t be confined to tourism alone as ease of travel would be a boon for business travelers and trade, according to Bill Barnett, managing director of hospitality and property consultancy C9 Hotelworks.
But a Schengen-type visa, which allows free travel around the border-free zone within Europe, may be an uphill task given Asean’s poor track record in expediting multilateral policy framework and the group’s standing as a talk shop.
“Country by country seems to be the best way to do it,” Barnett said. “Bilateral agreements, where governments are leading the way for this type of thing, make a lot of sense as they are looking outward and not inward.”
For a joint visa scheme, approvals have to be coordinated and the absence of standard immigration criteria among participating nations unlike the European Union can pose challenges, according to Thitinan Pongsudhirak, professor at Chulalongkorn University’s political science faculty. Asean, as a grouping is a divided body with a poor immigration record, he said.
With Srettha being neophyte in politics, he may lack the clout to push through the visa proposal, Thitinan said.
“All the various things he’s been trying to do, I see it as picking low-hanging fruits and picking fruits off the ground,” Thitinan said.“Sometimes fruits on the ground are rotten.”
