Villagers Keep The Fever Dream Alive
Bandleader conor o’brien talks tour, technology, and coming out., by brendan lee.
- Published on August 20, 2021
On the surface, Irish singer-songwriter Conor O’Brien leads a seemingly simplistic life from his homebase in Dublin but a deeper dive reveals that his day-to-day life is actually the opposite. O’Brien, the founding member and frontperson of indie-folk band Villagers , is cumbersomely busy. On the heels of Villagers’ fifth album, Fever Dream, he’s busy getting ready for the flurry of festivals and tour dates that will follow soon. When we catch up with him for a video call at the tail end of a sweaty, interview-filled afternoon, it’s just another day for O’Brien. Yet, for a man engulfed by his work, the Irish songwriter is in high spirits.
“A day in the life for me is: wake up and look at my to-do list, do all the things on the to-do list, and then try and get some dinner, and maybe try and go for a walk or something,” O’Brien says with a laugh. “It’s all to do with Villagers right now, and it’s crazy. After this, I’m going to run out and frolic in the sun by the canal.”
Villagers was founded in 2008 by O’Brien and is now rounded out by a band of five people. They have released four full-length albums in eight years, all critically and commercially successful with three of them even topping the Irish charts. Early on, Villagers drew comparisons to introspective indie folk bands like Bright Eyes , the low-key romantic folk project led by Conor Oberst. Soon enough, though, Villagers stood for themselves thanks to O’Brien’s haunting, sincere lyricism and the band’s restricted, autumnal sound. Villagers have been nominated twice for the Mercury Prize, which crowns the best album release each year in the UK and Ireland. Each of the band’s releases has also been short-listed for the Choice Music Award — an award for the best Irish album of the year. {Awayland} , their curiously-titled second full-length, won the award in 2013.
With all the albums and accolades in his back pocket, one might expect O’Brien to be a bragging, big-talking rockstar. But when asked to describe himself, he paints an unostentatious picture. “I see myself as quite introverted most of the time, but not all of the time. I’ve got a small group of friends, which I’m happy with,” he explains. “I’ve got a weird mixture of slightly messy dreaminess, but I’m also very disciplined within that. I think that’s why I’ve managed to do this as a job for the last ten years. Because once I get on an idea that is based on my strange, flimsy, artsy, weird brain, then I actually can’t do anything until it’s seen through.”
However, this musical obsession was no overnight sensation. For O’Brien, it all started with a guitar and the limitlessness that comes with undiscovered melodies. “I remember at the age of 12, once I started learning a few chords on the guitar, I was kind of like, ‘This is all I’m going to do, I’m just going to do this now.’ I was so happy,” he says with a smile. “I found what I was gonna do.”
Although a handful of songs from each Villagers album would fit nicely on the radio, that’s not what the band’s about. There’s a seeking quality to their music, which lives in the unpredictability of songs rooted in truth, dreams, and raw emotion. Looking back at the band’s growth, O’Brien reflects: “The first couple of Villagers albums were kind of fantastical, quite layered, dense. Sort of almost like they’re from a fantasy film from the 80s or 90s. And then the third album I was writing about sexuality.”
Villagers released Darling Arithmetic , their third album, in April 2015. Just about that time, a marriage equality referendum took place in Ireland . Coincidentally, O’Brien had recently come out publicly as gay. “I had to do all these interviews, and some of the interviewers were like, ‘So, you’ve come out.’ And I was just like, ‘I’ve never really been in,’” he laughs. “I’ve just written an album about love, and it just so happens that it might be gay love.”
Villagers’ new album, Fever Dream , is a euphoric swan dive into the deep end of some churning, magical pool. It’s a collection of indie folk songs with poignancy to the lyrics and a surprising enormity to the instrumentation that invites listeners to slip into vivid daydreams. Like a fanciful fever dream, the album treads a delirious, non-linear drift that ebbs in and out of the expected and less-than. “When I was a kid, I used to have lucid dreams. I have specific memories of waking up and going: ‘Wow, I fucking flew there!’ I had that same feeling making this record. Just closing your eyes and getting lost in this creation that you’re making,” he says.
In a Guinness-induced Twitter AMA , O’Brien described the new album as “careful jubilation.” When asked to unpack that a little further, he says: “I did want to make ecstatic and euphoric music. I wanted to make it with the spirit of all the long-form literature that I’m reading right now — the spirit of writing that happened before the internet existed,” he explains. “I still wanted the messiness of life in there.”
As the late afternoon light filters in through the window behind O’Brien, there’s a definitive excitement in the air, a sentiment that recalls the sequence of flocking butterflies lifting off as one stands atop a precipice. This kind of excitement is what O’Brien lives for, and he is surprisingly hopeful for an introvert when he imagines the precarious future through the looking glass. “I’d like to see us looking back at the era that we’re in now as a very primitive, internet era. I don’t think technology per se is the problem. I just think it’s the way our late capitalist society has used that technology,” he says. “And I think that open-mindedness isn’t going in the right direction with the way we’re interacting on the screens and stuff. For me, it’s art, and books, and music, and all that stuff, I think that’ll save the world.”
And with that, O’Brien is free to turn away from his life of screens and meticulous over-planning, to frolic to his heart’s desire in the last bit of sun the day has to offer. As he goes for his late afternoon walk and grabs a bite from a local eatery or something of the like, there’s no doubt the make-believe, tranquil sounds of Villagers will still occupy a little space in his thoughts. Just past the boundary of O’Brien’s conscious mind, the songs always play.

Villagers announce first ever acoustic European tour
Domino Records recently released a deluxe digital edition of Villagers' 2021 album Fever Dreams featuring exclusive acoustic versions. This autumn, for the first time, Villagers will be embarking on a special acoustic tour, playing intimate, stripped-back shows across Europe including one night at the MAC on 12 November . Tickets go on sale Friday 2 Sep at 10am here
Escapism is a very necessary pursuit right now, and Villagers' new album Fever Dreams follows it to mesmerising effect. It works like all the best records – it becomes a mode of transport; it picks you up from where you are and sets you down elsewhere. Conor O’Brien says on the gestation of Fever Dreams : “ I had an urge to write something that was as generous to the listener as it was to myself. Sometimes the most delirious states can produce the most ecstatic, euphoric and escapist dreams .”
These are songs with the strange, melted shapes and the magical ambivalence of dreams. The intent of the songs is both mysterious and as clear as a bell. With Fever Dreams , there is a sense of a deepening mastery and an expanding reach by O’Brien. Inspiration for the album was found in many places and came in from all angles, from night swimming on a Dutch island to Flann O’Brien, Audre Lorde, David Lynch, L. S. Lowry via the library music of Piero Umiliani and Alessandro Alessandroni and jazz from Duke Ellington and Alice Coltrane.
Written over the course of two years, the main bodies of the songs were recorded in a series of full-band studio sessions in late 2019 and early 2020. During the long, slow pandemic days, O’Brien refined them in his tiny home studio in Dublin, and the album was then mixed by David Wrench (Frank Ocean, The xx, FKA Twigs). Fever Dreams was released via Domino Records in August 2021.
The album follows The Art Of Pretending To Swim , Darling Arithmetic , {Awayland} , and Becoming A Jackal . Conor O’Brien also has a string of accolades under his belt including two Ivor Novello Awards, two Mercury Music Prize nominations, and is a previous winner of the Choice Music Prize. Additionally, Villagers’ music has featured in the BBC/Hulu series Normal People , and their Spotify session of “Nothing Arrived” has hit over 185 million streams.

The Last Dinner Party lives up to the hype at sold-out Turner Hall concert in Milwaukee
The Last Dinner Party was noticeably slaphappy on stage at Turner Hall Ballroom in Milwaukee Friday night, to the point that frontwoman Abigail Morris felt obliged to explain.
Except an elated Morris couldn't quite find the words, so she let bassist Georgie Davies do the talking. Amid a rigorous touring schedule, Davies said, they had created their own special holiday to celebrate at least two days off between gigs, and after this Milwaukee show, the band was going to have a break until next week.
So giddiness was in order. But the elation flowing through the crowd was for a different reason: The Last Dinner Party is on a wild ride few bands ever experience.
Playing its first gig in the band's native London in November 2021, The Last Dinner Party's pointed and infectious baroque pop rock quickly made the band a national sensation. They opened for the Rolling Stones in London's Hyde Park just eight months later, won the Rising Star award at the Brit Awards last month, and won the BBC Sound Of Poll, which has foreshadowed impending superstardom for Adele, Sam Smith and others.
And their debut album, February's "Prelude to Ecstasy," topped the charts in their homeland and has earned heaps of critical praise stateside, leading to major New York Times and Rolling Stone profiles and several sold-out shows, including Friday's in Milwaukee.
The rapid ascent for a band of female and nonbinary musicians has grossly prompted some cries of "industry plant" and other backlash thinly veiled in misogyny. But across a 67-minute set in Milwaukee Friday, The Last Dinner Party proved that it deserves all the accolades and good fortune that have come the band's way.
This may be the band's first tour through the Midwest, and they don't have extensive show experience. But confidently taking the stage Friday in prom-ready attire (and briefly sporting matching shades for the encore), the band's five members and touring drummer Rebekah Rayner swiftly demonstrated a striking sense of self and delivered a 13-song set void of any drag and filled with gripping drama.
Besides effortlessly throwing out adrenaline-pumping guitar licks for standouts like "Sinner," Emily Roberts demonstrated an equally absorbing musicality on the other side of the spectrum with a gentle flute intro for "Beautiful Boy." Aurora Nishevci conjured plenty of post-punk and baroque-pop atmosphere on keys (and sometimes keytar) while also singing in Albanian with a haunting lilt for "Gjuha."
And a winning chemistry among the members — a key reason for the band's rapid popularity — erupted when Davies, Roberts and Nishevci huddled together and rocked out with guitarist Lizzie Mayland for Catholic school-skewering "My Lady of Mercy," and when they jubilantly joined Morris on the unapologetically perverse chorus for signature singalong single "Nothing Matters."
The sweet and salty nature of those lyrics carried over into Morris' humorous and frequent banter between songs, while her stage presence frequently shifted from playful, dress-flowing pirouettes to poised, performative poses. The Last Dinner Party has cited David Bowie and Florence + The Machine as influences, and Morris especially channeled their theatricality with every fiber of her being — which, in turn, gave the sharp, sometimes shattered lyrics heightened resonance.
For "Caesar on a TV Screen" Friday, Morris' exaggerated gestures played up the absurdity and audacity of male privilege. "I know that I can see myself as a man … I can talk all the time/'Cause my shoulders are wide," she sang with tongue firmly planted in cheek. But about halfway through the song, she scaled back the bombast to quietly let the insecurity and sadness behind the showmanship rise to the surface, singing, just above a whisper, "Anyone and everyone will like me then/Everyone will like me then."
Morris' tenderness also shined for the start of what she dubbed "the weeping hour" of the set for "On Your Side," vowing through the chorus, "When it's 4 a.m. and your heart is breaking/I will hold your hands to stop them from shaking," the generosity of the devotion disturbed by images of vampirism and cold-hearted murder that expose the ugliness of a toxic relationship.
For album closer "Mirror," Morris initially sang the chorus a cappella — "I'm just a mirror/I don't exist without your gaze" — her voice steadily rising for a shattering climax. And on "Portrait of a Dead Girl," Morris' crowd-swaying power reached its full force, singing lines like "I wish you had given me the courtesy of ripping out my throat" with heart-gripping venom, before leading the crowd through an impassioned, looping singalong of "Give me the strength, give me the strength" for the song's cathartic outro.
It was clear almost as soon as tickets for The Last Dinner Party's Milwaukee show went on sale, and quickly sold out, that the band was already too big for the 987-person-capacity Turner Hall Ballroom.
But Friday's winning show confirmed that, the next time the British band comes to town, there's going to be way more people at the Party.
5 takeaways from The Last Dinner Party’s Milwaukee concert
- Three songs into the set, a cheesehead was tossed onto the stage customized with the first names of the band written all around it. Morris promptly placed it on her head to audience approval — after lowering herself to the ground, as if she was about to be knighted by King Charles. A moment later, Morris asked Roberts for her consent to place the cheesehead on her head, which she gave, and Mayland sported it for a spell later in the set, too. (The scene also prompted one guy in the crowd to repeatedly shout about having a salmon hat, or at least that's what it sounded like, prompting some fans to boo and Morris to gently restore peace.)
- Morris also revealed that the band visited Mars Cheese Castle (or as she said it, the "cheeesssee castle") en route to Milwaukee. "We met the royal family and we shook hands … and we're going to bring curds back to the U.K.," she said. "We've never been to the Midwest and it's like, 'Cheese! Beer!' It's like this state was invented for us."
- The setlist included a song The Last Dinner Party has yet to release called “Godzilla,” a rollicking rocker reminiscent of a Rolling Stones bar jam. Here's hoping it makes it onto the next album.
- The band also played a cover of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Games,” which at times showed even more restraint than the original.
- Theoretically, opener Miss Grit was the antithesis of the Last Dinner Party’s baroque stylings, with Margaret Sohn performing Grit’s alternative and electronic rock songs solo under intentionally shadowy lighting. But there was still a simmering intensity to Sohn’s musicianship that heartily won over the crowd before her half-hour was through.

Fans Worry About The Booked Schedule For Popular Korean Band’s North American Tour
There are a lot of Korean artists going on tour in the next couple of months, and that includes bands as well as idol groups. And while some of these tours have plenty of breaks in between shows that allow the performers to rest and recuperate, some of them are much more packed and have fans worried about the artists’ health.
One such instance is for the band LUCY . Not long ago, it was announced by their label Mystic Story that the band would be going on their first world tour, with a lengthy stay in North America throughout May and June.
Starting on May 23 in Toronto, Canada, the band has a whopping 20 stops that include often-visited cities for K-Pop tours as well as lesser-traveled places. Their final stop is on June 20 in Vancouver, Canada, after touring through the States.
While LUCY is a band and thus doesn’t have set choreography that they perform during their sets, they still put a lot of energy into their performances, not to mention they have to carry around heavy instruments for the majority of their shows. Fans are concerned that having 20 shows in just 29 days is going to take a toll on the members, especially the vocalists’ voices.
Here’s what netizens have to say about this upcoming hectic schedule.
We hope that LUCY has a successful and enjoyable tour, and that even though they have a packed schedule, they’re able to get as much rest and relaxation as they can!

The S.O.S. Band (formed in 1977) is a notoriously groovy American R&B and electro-funk group from Atlanta, Georgia, in the U.S.
Originally known as Santa Monica, the S.O.S. (sounds of success) Band formed of members Willie “Sonny” Killebrew on saxophone, Billy Ellis on flute, Jason Bryant on the keyboard, Bruno Speight on guitar, John Simpson on bass, James Earl Jones III on drums and Mary Davis on vocals. The band would perform regularly and recorded a series of demos, one of which was heard by Tabu Records who signed the group to their first recording contract.
In 1980 S.O.S. Band released their first hit single “Take Your Time (Do It Right)” written and produced by Sigidi Abdullah and Harold Clayton. The single went platinum, reached No. 1 in the R&B chart, staying there for five weeks, and debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200. The debut album “S.O.S.” also performed remarkably well selling over 800,000 copies and reaching No. 2 in the R&B album chart.
The band subsequently toured and welcomed the multi-instrumentalist Abdul Ra’oof to the line-up, whose recording debut with the band came on their sophomore album “Too” in 1981. S.O.S. Band’s third studio release entitled “S.O.S. Band III” came in 1982 with support from producer Terry Lewis.
After these modest successes, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis took over the production reigns for LP number four titled “On the Rise”. The album became certified gold as did its successor “Just the Way You Like It” which featured the No. 6 R&B single of the same name. The tide began to turn for the S.O.S. Band with their sixth studio album “Sands of Time” which despite reaching No. 4 in the R&B chart was the last of a string of their distinctive house music releases that made popular the Roland TR-808 drum machine.
Mary Davis announced her departure from the band in 1987 to pursue a solo career, however the band continued-on a released the albums “Diamonds in the Raw” (1989) and “One of Many Night” (1991). In 1994 Davis reunited with Abdul Ra’oof and Jason Bryant in a new band in the hopes of recreating some of the same funky sounds.
Live reviews
‘People always talkin’ bout, Your reputation, I don’t care about your other girls, Just be good to me’…what a classic R&B disco track from the 80s. It’s a track that brings back a lot of nostalgia for me and I think everyone at the S.O.S Band’s concert. Although the band have been around since the late 70s, their performances today are still just as knock out as they were back in the day. Changing the line up of bands usually takes away the original spark and chemistry that they had, but for S.O.S, their alteration of artists seems to bring new life and energy to the group.
They came on stage and took their positions behind their respective instruments, and launched straight into High Hopes, before introducing themselves and having a chat with the audience. It was great to hear from them about what they’d been doing in recent years, and how their new track Just Get Ready came about. When they played it, they taught the crowd a small section of the chorus, and got us all to sing along which was cool. It was pretty special to be one of the first audiences to hear the track live.
They really hit the balance of new and old tracks, playing all the hits from their albums, and the number one singles which everyone was loving. The energy and stage presence they gave off was still incredible, and you could tell that they were loving every moment of their performance. Hopefully they’ll keep writing and performing, because there’s definitely still potential for great music to come.

SOS are an American, Atlanta born, R&B and electro funk band that have been going strong since 1977. The Georgian group have achieved moderate success over the many years that they have been in fruition, building up a legion of fans over the decades. The crowd was indeed packed full of nostalgic middle aged funk veterans who had clearly come to reminisce, as well as families and even quite a few young people. It seems that funk will never die, and SOS’s music will always remain popular in that brilliant 80s fashion of resurgence. The groovy hits that SOS smashed out in the day are now ‘hipster’. Young and old were grooving away to hits such as the eponymously titled ‘SOS’, ‘What’s Wrong with our Love Affair’ and ‘Take Your Time’. Despite decades together, the band were still full of energy and passion for the music they were performing and this translated into the crowd. People were singing along, shouting out choruses and dancing to the grooves. It was a wonderfully nostalgic night all round.
Nice to see them back in Amsterdam after almost 26 years. Groovin', that's what we were doing. A nice packed Paradiso with all SOS Band lovers I'm sure. All the known grooves came bye and despite some unfunky song transitions and not too well tuned voice and sound balance, it was awesome. The synthbass in combination with Mary Davis' stunning voice is still nothing but the best, the finest, just the way I like it and even when you sleep I'm telling you no lies. Hopefully they will not take their time to come back to PLAAAYYYY in Amsterdam again.
The S.O.S. Band was in pure form last Thursday night at THE BIRCHMERE! I felt like I had travelled through a time warp and landed in the 1980's, in a night club, and I was jammin' as I did over three decades ago! The S.O.S. Band's performance of "Just Be Good To Me" and of "Take Your Time (Do It Right)" had the audience singing and dancing like We were all young again in Our 20's & 30's. "THANK YOU", S.O.S. Band for the youthful rejuvenation!
My first time seeing one of my favorite groups they were REALLY GOOD the ladies were on point especially the one with the yellow boots. The band and the other groups all did well. Lets keep the old school coming that's the real music. This new music doesn't have any backbone in it.
Great performance. Sound and show as good like old days. I only missed a bass player. Next time they should bring one with their next tour. And performance must be 100% live and not partly with tape.I'll be there, if they do our country again, The Netherlands.
SOS Band was incredible as always... Last Night Toyota Arena in Ontario... Funk Festival... They Turn it Out!!...Soul Great!!... Dance steps on point!!..Especially Abdul Raa’oof I Love You!!.. Such an Great Dancer!!... Yes you still got it Babe!!...
The SOS Band was incredible! Loved their performance...sound as good as ever!! I sang my heart out! SOS took me back many years! Wish they would’ve performed more songs in the Funk N LA concert since they closed the show. Recommend them 100%
The SOS Band sounds the same as I remember in my '20s, great. The Band has not lost a step and the songs bring back great memories. Please bring them back again.
The SOS band has not lost their touch. I had a wonderful time. They still sound the same as as if they in the studio. I will go see them anytime they are concert

Heart Extends Massive 2024 Reunion Tour with Shows in Nashville, L.A., N.Y.C. and More — See the Dates!
The rock legends will be setting out on tour along with Cheap Trick, BTO featuring Randy Bachman and Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Evening

After a five year hiatus, allow Heart to go "Crazy on You" with their thrilling live show and long-awaited return to the stage!
The rockers previously announced they were setting out on a massive tour in 2024 — marking their reunion and first run of live shows since 2019 — and, on Tuesday, Heart revealed they're expanding the dates. The group helmed by sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson will now continue their run, titled the Royal Flush Tour, across North America through the end of the year, along with an A-list slate of special guests.
While the "Barracuda" group's shows this year were originally set to kick off in late April and wrap up by September, they'll now be out on the road through the fall until mid-December.
Heart's 2024 tour kicks off on April 20 in Greenville, South Carolina, continues in the U.S. through May, before heading to Europe for a handful of dates in June and July. On July 30, they'll resume their North American leg in Columbus, Ohio, and then play through the rest of the summer and into the fall.
The newly announced dates begin on Sept. 26 in San Francisco and last until Dec. 15 in Las Vegas. Fans will be able to catch the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees at stadiums in major cities like Los Angeles, Houston, Nashville, New York City, Vancouver, San Diego and many others.
Throughout the Royal Flush Tour, the "Magic Man" band will be joined by fellow rock legends Cheap Trick, and select shows will also include support from BTO featuring Randy Bachman and Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Evening, the project from the son of the English rock group's original drummer.

The Wilson sisters shared a statement in press release about the upcoming concerts.
"We’re so excited to announce more tour dates," Ann, 73, said. “The exceptional talent of the band — Ryan, Ryan, Paul, Tony and Sean — brings a whole new level of energy to Heart’s live performance."

Nancy, 70, added, "I am incredibly proud of the show that we have crafted and am looking forward to reconnecting with even more fans. We can’t wait to share our music with everyone and celebrate the big electric energy of a completely live on the spot rock show."

The Royal Flush Tour comes after the rock favorites celebrated their 50th anniversary last year.
It also marks their first time out on the road together since 2019, when the "Alone" group set out on their Love Alive Tour. At the time, the shows saw the Wilsons coming back together after the two experience a brief rift. (In 2016, Ann's husband, Dean Wetter, assaulted Nancy's then-16-year-old sons after they reportedly left a tour bus door open, which he pleaded guilty to two non-felony assault charges.)
Both Ann and Nancy also recently took time to record their own solo efforts: Ann with Fierce Bliss in 2022 and Nancy with You and Me in 2021.

The two hitmakers have both explained to PEOPLE in interviews that taking time apart only makes their work together in Heart stronger.
"[Taking time apart] allows us to bring stuff back to Heart that we didn't have before," Ann said in a 2022 interview . "We love each other. She and I really look forward to smooth sailing."
Meanwhile, Nancy shared in a 2021 conversation that it was "so amazing" to get back out on the road together on their 2019 tour. "I could see that the Heart fans really loved the big spectacle aspects of the show — even if Ann didn't love the bubble machine I had requested," she said. "But most of all we saw how much the Heart fans loved the Heart sisters reunited."
While the previously announced concerts are already on sale , tickets for the fall dates go on sale later this week. Ticket sales kick off with a presale for Citi cardmembers, which lasts from now until Thursday at 10 p.m. local time. The general on-sale will then follow on Friday at 10 a.m. local time.
