Tiger Cruises

tiger cruise 2022

One of the true joys of returning from sea from a long deployment is to have a loved one join you on a short transit home to see what Dad, Mom, Aunt or Uncle does in the Navy. This post will be co-written by me and the NHF director of Events, Mr. Sam Hall, whose “Dadmiral” is Rear Admiral Garry Hall, USN (Ret.).

A “Tiger” is almost always a family member who is invited by a Sailor to sail with them from the final port of call on a long deployment to homeport. The Navy describes the purpose of a Tiger Cruise officially in the following way:

www.rso.navy.mil/chaps/tigercruise/tigercruise.htm

“The occasional embarkation of family members of naval personnel is intended to contribute to good morale and instill in servicemembers a sense of pride in the Navy and their ships. It also enhances public understanding of the Navy and increases community awareness.”

“Operation Tiger Cruise is the unclassified code name for a very special guest cruise program that includes two or more consecutive days underway. The primary purpose of a Tiger Cruise is for servicemembers to acquaint their family members with their ship and their shipboard duties.”

Sam Hall will jump in shortly to represent the Tiger perspective, but I wanted to share how great it was to have my step-father join me on four different Tiger cruises aboard the USS Paul F. Foster (DD 964)—twice—and once each on the USS Chancellorsville (CG 62) and USS Shiloh (CG 67).

My step-father Capt. Joseph E. Gould, USN (Ret.), was a USNA grad (class of ’43, but graduated in June of ’42) and was a Diesel submariner (WWII), Surface Warrior (Korea) and Naval Intelligence (Vietnam) officer. He had five afloat commands in his nearly 30-year career and knew a thing or two about my business. As a Navigator, he joined me for shooting morning and evening stars, actually shooting stars and reducing them to determine our position. These are not easy skills to master and imagine my intimidation that he did this 8 years after retirement. He added to my misery, I mean, professional development, when he encouraged me to obtain a 1000 (10 AM) sun line each morning so we could obtain a running fix from a local apparent noon calculation. At lunch in the wardroom, a young Sailor entered and presented to the Captain our twelve o’clock reports… “Sir the Officer of the Deck sends his respects and reports the approaching hour of 1200. All chronometers have been wound and compared and we have position fixes from a sunline/local apparent noon, SATNAV, Loran and Omega.” “Very well”, said Capt. Lee Kaiss. Our Commodore, Capt. John J. Gelke, was a Kings Point mariner of great navigational and engineering accomplishment as well.  Together they were apoplectic that our Nav-team was so accomplished, forward leaning and on top of the game. “Wow, Petty Officer Gallup (the leading Quartermaster) is really raising the bar these days, isn’t he?” opined the Old Man. The Commodore jumped into the conversation and brought the credit where it belonged—to my stepfather. This is when the Commodore metaphorically became my step-dad’s “bestie” and they shot stars together for the final four days of our deployment. My Quartermasters were elated as the small and always nearly empty chart room was jammed with two Captains, a Lieutenant, and the occasional Junior Officer needing some Personnel Qualification Standard signed off in what was supposed to be a chill and retiring ride home in an empty chartroom.

Sam—Over to you—

Thank you, Admiral—Sam here. As a young Navy kid, I never really knew that much about my dad’s work. His time on shore duty felt like he was at any other job with long hours a mom or dad might’ve had. My family and I said farewell and welcomed him back many times on different piers and hangars or he’d surprise me and my siblings and break us out of school, but I never really knew what his life was like on the boat. In late July of 1998, my perception of all of that changed as a young Tiger with my older brother, Garry. We met my dad in Pearl Harbor as the USS Tarawa (LHA 1), the Eagle of the Sea, returned from the Arabian Peninsula, Persian Gulf, and different ports of Africa and the Pacific. I was lucky that year—I just made the age cut of 8 years old merely a month before the cruise.

tiger cruise 2022

Twenty-one years later, there’s still so much from that Tiger Cruise that I carry with me. I still feel giddy as I tell friends and colleagues of the rumble and boom of an M242 firing off into the distance with eyes fixed on the glow of tracers turning into splashes. The sound of ocean waves lapping into the immense well deck is still vivid in my mind. As a little guy then, I didn’t shoot much, but being on the Marine’s indoor range might’ve put a little hair on my chest. Whether it was sharing lunch with the crew and other Tigers or watching the awe-inspiring skill and tact of flight ops, I loved being on the flight deck most of all.

In all honesty, being a Navy kid was tough at times. When a parent is on a deployment, it can feel like a lifetime. But being a lucky, young Tiger sailing home with Dad, seeing what he did day-to-day, and meeting the amazing men and women he served with—Those are memories I wouldn’t trade for the world.

Back to over to you, Sonny—

I have many more Tiger memories. One of my executive officer’s, Bob Williams, son Robbie was a whirling dirvish of activitiy and rowdiness—and went on to become Commanding Officer of Seal Team 3.  Then-Lieutenant Bill Keating’s Uncle John Ahern “tigered” with us many times and had his own seat in the Goat Locker (Chief Petty Officers’ Mess) complete with his own coffee mug. Then-Lieutenant Paul Schultz’ father, Paul Sr., came aboard with his Korean-War vintage DBF Dolphins (Diesel Boats Forever) and the best array of off-color sea stories ever told on a sailing vessel of any era.

What are your Tiger cruise memories either as a Tiger or host of a Tiger? What activities were most memorable? How did you or your parents fund the trip in tight budget situations? What did you learn about your Sailor Dad or Mom that you didn’t know before? How had your young son or daughter matured over the previous six to eight months that surprised you?

Wherever I find a Navy family, the Tiger cruise always comes up in conversation. Let’s start one now!

2022 Triumph Tiger Sport 660 | First Ride Review

We ride Triumph's new middleweight adventure sport-tourer

2022 Triumph Tiger Sport 660

When the covers were pulled off the 2022 Triumph Tiger Sport 660 , it made sense. Triumph has its adventure bike bases covered with its various Tiger 850 , Tiger 900 , and Tiger 1200 models. But since the Tiger 1050 and Trophy were dropped from the lineup in recent years, it no longer has a sport-tourer in its lineup. Rather than go after the high-dollar, high-tech open-class sport-touring segment – which has all but dried up due to the popularity of adventure bikes – Triumph focused on the valued-priced middleweight segment, where it goes head-to-head with stalwarts like the Honda NC750X ($8,699) and Kawasaki Versys 650 ($8,899).

The Tiger Sport 660, which has a base price of $9,295, is built on Triumph’s Trident 660 platform that was introduced last year. From the 17-inch cast wheels to the Nissin braking system and Michelin Road 5 tires, Hinckley leverages much of the Trident’s core components for the new model. Unique in this price and displacement class is the Tiger’s liquid-cooled, 12-valve, 660cc inline-Triple, a versatile engine that produces 80 horsepower at 10,250 rpm and 47 lb-ft of torque at 6,250 rpm (claimed at the crank). It also has ride modes (Road and Rain), switchable traction control, and ABS, but alas, no cruise control.

2022 Triumph Tiger Sport 660

The Tiger Sport 660 is more than a middleweight naked bike with a fairing and windscreen bolted on. Triumph still employs a tubular-steel perimeter frame but steepens the rake to 23.1 degrees. The longer and sturdier subframe accommodates optional panniers and a top box, while the long-travel suspension promotes comfort and two-up touring.

Its new front fairing adds wind protection and a one-hand, height-adjustable windscreen allows riders to reduce buffeting on long road trips or amplify airflow in congested urban environments. In the lowest position, oncoming air hit me at chest level; in the highest setting, wind danced around my helmet’s chinbar. Results will vary for shorter and taller riders, but at 5 feet, 10 inches, the top position suited my frame best.

Dustin’s Gear: Helmet: Bell Eliminator Jacket: Alpinestars GP Plus R v3 Jacket Gloves: Alpinestars Mustang v2 Gloves Pants: Pando Moto Robby Arm 01 Jeans Boots: Dainese Persepolis Air Shoes

Triumph enhances that comfort with a taller handlebar and extra distance between the seat and footpegs compared to the Trident. Thanks to the neutral position and generously padded seat, the Tiger encourages all-day riding. The lengthened subframe also provides extra space in the cockpit, enabling users to scoot forward or rearward for an optimal rider triangle. Throughout our 150-mile test ride at the Tiger Sport 660’s global launch in Portugal, not once did my back, wrists, or knees ache, and larger riders in the group echoed those sentiments.

2022 Triumph Tiger Sport 660

While the ergos can be classified as relaxed, the handling lives up to the Sport moniker. The upright position places the rider’s knees flush against the fuel tank, providing an ideal anchor point before tip-in. That’s when the Tiger is at its best. Side-to-side transitions are swift and fluid. Steering is precise and direct. Couple that with grippy sport-touring tires, and the Sport 660’s handling borders on telepathic.

Due to its steep rake, the Tiger stays light on its feet, ready to dive into the next corner. On the other hand, the 55.8-inch wheelbase helps maintain stability at lean. That nimble nature allows the rider to put the bike anywhere on the road. While the non-adjustable 41mm fork and preload-adjustable shock, both from Showa, favor comfort with 5.9 inches of travel at both ends, the setup delivers sufficient support and feedback for spirited riding as well.

2022 Triumph Tiger Sport 660

The suspension’s only blemish is the fork’s soft spring, but only heavy braking exposes that minor shortcoming. In a straight line, the dual 2-piston Nissin front calipers mated to 310mm discs bring the 454-pound Tiger to a rapid halt. The axial front master cylinder yields surprising feel and feedback at the lever when trail braking into a bend. Dual-channel ABS increases confidence, while switchable traction control and Rain mode, which softens throttle response versus Road mode, act as safety nets for less-than-ideal conditions or technique.

Triumph adds such rider aids to favor newer riders, but the ultra-tractable 660cc Triple is innately user-friendly. With 80 ponies and 47 lb-ft of torque on tap, the retrofitted 675 Triple is equal parts thrill and chill. Away from a stop, the mill delivers 90% of its torque between 3,600-9,750 rpm. The linear powerband may benefit novice riders, but it doesn’t stop experienced pilots from exploiting the power potential at the top of the rev limiter.

2022 Triumph Tiger Sport 660

However, most riders won’t need to push the Tiger to those limits, especially when engine vibrations course through the footpegs at 8,500 rpm. Luckily, in 6th gear at 70 mph, it trots along at around 5,000 rpm. That mild-mannered quality caters to tourers, but the engine remains manageable even when the pace picks up. With usable power accessible throughout the rev range, the middleweight also helps compensate for rider mistakes.

On several instances during the ride, I forgot to drop a gear – or two – going into a corner. Fortunately, the readily available torque helped pull the Tiger through. Despite its accommodating demeanor, the Triple also wails up to its 10,500-rpm redline. It’s that combination of performance and practicality that makes the Sport 660 such a versatile bike. Those looking for the utmost performance can add on an up/down quickshifter from Triumph’s accessories catalog, but the standard unit offers smooth transitions and reliable gear engagement out of the box.

2022 Triumph Tiger Sport 660

The Tiger Sport 660 may not feature a fire-breathing engine, trick suspension, top-tier brakes, or state-of-the-art electronics, but that doesn’t stop it from being a well-balanced package. Each component contributes to the 660’s end goal. The electronics enhance safety without adding complexity. The inline-Triple produces enough power for seasoned vets without scaring beginners. The suspension and brakes complement the Tiger’s mild and wild side.

As an affordable yet well-appointed sport-tourer, the Tiger Sport 660 is undeniably well-rounded. From commuting to canyon carving to touring, Hinckley’s latest middleweight does it all. The competition better look out because there’s a new Tiger on their tail.

Adventure bike? With the 5.9″ of travel I’m sure it’ll handle a dirt road just fine, but with the 17″ wheels, good wind/weather protection and great handling it’s really a sport tourer. A better looking, better sounding more powerful Versys 650. Very nice job Triumph!

Adventure sport is probably the best way to describe the Tiger Sport 660 and Versys 650 since they have upright ergos like adventure bikes but are designed for street/sport-touring duty.

“Adventure” is more defined by the ability to go well off-road than it is by bar position. Otherwise, you’d have to call every standard, naked street bike, hypermotard, and flat tracker“adventure”, when they are clearly not.

This is a sport tourer, period. There is nothing “adventure” about it. It does not make on-road compromises to provide off-road ability. It has “sport” in the name, is largely designed for touring, has no off-road pretensions, and according to the article, has geometry and wheel size designed for touring and sporty riding.

It’s an ST, and had you understood that from the start, you wouldn’t have been confused about its concept, as you admit in the first paragraph of the article.

My only confusion is: why does this bike not have cruise control? Cheers!

Me too, cruise control is not even an after market option. And it’s not just for old blustered up wrists, on long motorway rides I find I use way too much concentration keeping to the legal limit where cruise control just lets me concentrate on traffic and riding. I like the idea of of a lighter middleweight ST if it had cruise control, I have discounted the Honda CBR650R for exactly the same reason. I’m being forced to buy the Suzuki GSX S1000GT for my next (possibly last) bike and while I’m sure I will enjoy it, I have the feeling it is way more bike than I really need.

I can’t believe it. 10 years ago cruise control was inaccessible to the average rider. What is your right wrist for?? I worry about how much concentration you possess safe riding.

Another really nice bike using the 660 engine. I hope they offer a Rally model for real ADV duty as the new Aprilia Tuareg looks ready to bring it to the Yamaha T7 and Triumph could own some of that sizzling hot segment.

I have to say it: Where’s my cruise control?

Appreciate your fine article and observations. As an older (Harley touring bike) rider, the V-twin (vibration) is not working well with my physiology (something not that uncommon with older riders).

I have visited my local Triumph dealer and took a look at a few models. The Tiger Sport 660 was one that interested me (despite vastly different styling and size than my Road King) for several reasons including minimal to near zero engine vibration, two up riding ability (my wife loves to ride with me) and pannier / trunk accessories for weekend trips.

Your article provides some nice additional information.

Gotta say, I love this bike, but Triumph really dropped the ball by not including cruise control. At the very least it should be an option, if not standard. It’s already got ride-by-wire anyway, so adding cruise can’t be that tough.

Touring ? Chuckle ! No way ! With that clipped-off exhaust pipe exiting right into your ears ? That seat ? A touring bike ? Hilarious !

yeppers. Triumph missed a big opportunity to have the ONE bike that is A.) sport tourer, B.) all around fun ride and C.) accessory ability….I just made that term up…. cruise control (adaptive would be even better), and heated grips would have completed the opportunity for me.

Nice try though.

I’ll never understand why so many motorcycles lack cruise control. I wouldn’t think of having a car or truck without cruise control and I sure don’t like twisting a throttle for several hours at a time. Cruise control should be an option on all motorcycles capable of touring (650cc and up). Is cruise control really that complicated or expensive on a motorcycle? Could a moto journalist please do an article with a major manufacturer on this subject to shed some light on this problem? I also think that cruise control and shaft drive go together very well. I wouldn’t want a chain drive on my car or truck either. Please, could someone make a middleweight sport tourer with cruise control and shaft drive. maybe I need to look at the Moto Guzzi V100 Mandello. At least it has shaft drive.

The Africa Twin has cruise control on all trim levels. No main stand, however. I don’t know if these factory guys ever ride in the real world.

I never use my cruise control and I ride for hours. Same for my cars unless I am in the middle of nowhere on a straight road. I have to ride this bike because my magazine impressions are rarely born out. I am tall, long legged and have a need for just the right amount of fear inducing horsepower. Cute bike. I have to see it in person.

I have bought a Tiger 660 Sport. It is coming in May. I have tested every bike available. BMW, Kawasaki, Honda etc for the last three years. I tested this bike and put my deposit down straight away. I have been waiting for this bike for a long time. Why do people ask for Cruise Control? When is anyone EVER going to use Cruise Control on this bike? I am taking it from Belfast- Rosslare -Chebourg – France – Northern Spain and back in June. I might use Cruise Control for 10 minutes on a motorway one day, but I avoid motorways. This bike will thrive in the Picos and Pyranees. Where do guys who ask for Cruise Control think they are going to ride this bike? This bike is like a 125 when you are floating around the urban environment. It then quickens up and turns into a 1000cc Sports bike if you want. It has the same power to weight ratio as the new Honda NT1000. It is just brilliant, well for me anyway

Well, you donot ride 4+ hours to your first actual corner or visible elevation change so of less importance (and obviously interest) to you but motorway (interstate in my case) or not there are those of us where this is the reality.

Cruise control is not a deal breaker for me despite being in the flatlands but gotta agree, with throttle-by-wire onboard, no reasonnot to have it as an option.

Just picked up my tiger 660. Very fun On the Twisties. Took it out on the freeway raised up the wind screen there was good turbulence around trucks but who cares I don’t cruise the freeway’s much. People whine about no cruise control I’ve been using throttle locks for 30 years. The mid range torque is very fun. This bike was never meant to be an off road bike it’s a middle weight sport tourer. And it’s freaking the most fun you will ever have for 9200.00.

I too wish it had cruise. I just rode from Spokane, WA to Red Lodge, MT. 600 miles on interstate 90. I used a cramp buster, but cruise sure would have made that ride easier. Not everyone wants or needs it, but Triumph should offer it as an accessory. The Triumph performed amazingly, both on the highway and back and forth over the Beartooth Highway. My only wishes would be the cruise and a center stand. Well, maybe the 765 engine, Brembo’s and top notch suspension. Tiger Sport RR?

“Adventure” is an overused word in motorcycling. Everyone seems to think a motorcycle needs to have some ADV element to it to be successful. Not. It’s a sport touring bike with ZERO off-road intentions. Looks to be a great bike for an extended highway trip.

2022 Tiger 900 Cruise Control fix

Discussion in ' Triumph Tigers ' started by wood600rr , Jul 21, 2022 .

I just bought a 2022 Tiger 900 Rally Pro and everything was perfect except the cruise control would not function. I followed the instructions in the manual to no avail, the light on the dash would not illuminate. So I did some searching and found a fix for a different model Tiger and I gave it a try, lo and behold it worked perfectly. Seems like the dealer never activated it, the sequence below activates it properly: This is from manual, but not sure if you have to have the Triumph Diagnostic tool running as the test is part of a particular Diagnostic tool test. Switch ignition on ( But do not run engine): Operate each function only once in the below order 1) Press Cruise control On 2) Operate front brake 3) Operate Rear Brake 4) Operate Clutch Lever 5) Operate Twist grip cruise cancel ( Roll twist grip fully forward) 6) Operate Cruise control accelerate 7) Operate Cruise Control decelerate 8) Turn ignition off then on Try it and let us know

The only thing I can think of is maybe they do it at 1st service (if so they should have told you). Lots of manufacturers recommend not using CC until after break in. Too steady of an rpm isn't great for new cams. Better break in is to intentionally vary gear and speed to be at varied and not too high rpm.
Yeah that makes sense I suppose, this is the first bike I have had with cruise control and I likely won't use it much especially around town but for sure it should be disclosed if it is not activated until first service.

That's the same procedure on the 800's. This can occur if certain DTC's are tripped and reset. Probably occurred during bike assembly at the dealership and they never reset it. Keep this procedure handy if this occurs on a trip and your cruise is disabled. From the manual: Cruise Control Switch Check The cruise control switch check is required after certain DTCs or defects have been repaired which relate to the ride by wire system or cruise control system, or after the adaptions have been reset. The switch check requires the user to operate the switches in order, following the instructions on screen. ... A malfunction of any switch will not necessarily cause a DTC to be stored and may prevent the cruise control from operating correctly.

My '21 900 Rally Pro cruise control stopped working after some electrical mods I was making. Regarding this sequence, #1 and #7 are the same button, right? So should one of these steps be skipped? My copy of the shop manual makes several references to a Cruise Control Switch Check, but it never explains how to perform it. wood600rr said: ↑ Operate each function only once in the below order 1) Press Cruise control On 2) Operate front brake 3) Operate Rear Brake 4) Operate Clutch Lever 5) Operate Twist grip cruise cancel ( Roll twist grip fully forward) 6) Operate Cruise control accelerate 7) Operate Cruise Control decelerate 8) Turn ignition off then on Try it and let us know Click to expand...
Yes, #1 and #7 are the same button (switch). You will need some sort of diag tool, TigerTool or TuneECU and it walks you through it. Test starts with CC off. This is from my 800 manual but it's the same.

Tiger Cruise

  • Coming of Age
  • Happy Continuation to A Great Idea

imagejpeg_0

A couple of weeks ago my son was advised that his aircraft carrier would be sailing into friendly waters and, as this particular 7-month global mission was coming to a close, sailors would be able to invite family aboard for a brief “Tiger Cruise” experience. You may know, a Tiger Cruise is the Navy’s special guest program that allows service members to acquaint family members with their ship and their shipboard duties. Of course, I jumped at the chance, and met the USS John C. Stennis at the Port of Jacksonville for boarding and the 3-day cruise to Norfolk, VA.

At IDEAS, we design experiences.  To be sure…spending a few days with my son on-board and witnessing this teeming city in action was an experience I’ll never forget!  Some quick Stennis facts:  1100’ long; 250’ wide; 6000 officers, crew and airmen; 90-plane capacity; two nuclear reactors; 4 props churning out HUNDREDS of thousands of horsepower and a top speed of “over 30 knots”.  And, holy smokes…you should see this baby run!!  During a full-power demonstration we watched in awe from the rear of the ship as the Niagara-like prop-wash churned up to slalom-skiing speed. The awesome violence of this water pealing back into a perfectly formed wake, pushing this floating city is – like seeing the Grand Canyon – just unimaginable until you see it the first time.  Our Navy can get anywhere in the world, in no-time, flat.

In the interest of brevity, some highlights for me were being able to see:

  • F-18s and Seahawk helicopters with wings and rotors “all folded up” and staged inside the Hangar Deck, and outside on the Flight Deck
  • F-18s backed up to a jet blast deflector, attached to a steam-powered catapult at their nose-gear and launched to 165mph in 2 seconds
  • F-18s snatched from the air at FULL throttle by the tailhook that they drag at landing
  • Maybe the world’s largest elevator raising two F-18s from the Hangar Deck to the Flight Deck… a distance of more than 30 feet…in about 7 seconds .
  • The engineering, mechanics, logistics and hundreds of officers and enlisted that all come together in this symphony of mission readiness
  • As an advocate, it was wonderful to see the number of women in “typically male roles” as gunners, flight deck crew, boatswains, avionics and mechanics techs, pilots and helmsman
  • My son — now a proficient nuclear electrician – in action with his shipmates. I couldn’t be prouder of his success, confidence and the enormous amount of effort that he’s put forth…that all these sailors put forth…in their multi-year journey of learning and service.

Without seeing it first-hand, its hard to understand the level of planning and preparation that goes into everything our military does. These men and women are truly “the best of the best”, executing every task with surgical efficiency and expertise, through the world’s most advanced technology, information and equipment. Seeing this, I am so proud of our nation’s military and the effort our talented servicemen and women put forth every day to keep our nation’s interests and people safe. Yes, I am proud…and will forever be a grateful advocate for their service. Thank you to every one of them. This has been one amazing experience.

USS George Washington departs for Japan

N ORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Excitement was in the air as the crew got ready this morning, boarding the USS George Washington as it forward-deploys to Japan for the second time after spending the last six years calling Hampton Roads home.

The USS George Washington spent the last six years at Newport News Shipbuilding undergoing maintenance and updating, completing a midlife refueling and complex overhaul in May 2023. Now, the George Washington gets to head back into foreign waters — a first for many onboard.

“My mom, when I told her, well, she was a little nervous at first, but yeah I’m excited to go to Japan just to try new things, meet new people,” CSSN Imani Murphy said.

The USS George Washington will relieve the USS Ronald Reagan in Yokosuka, Japan as the forward-deployed naval forces aircraft carrier, deploying to the U.S. Southern Command area of operations as part of Southern Seas 2024. Taking the southern route around South America, it will stop in Brazil, Chile and Peru before going up the west coast.

The USS George Washington previously served as the forward-deployed naval forces aircraft carrier in 2008, when it became the first nuclear-powered carrier forward-deployed to Japan.

“Team Warfighter is ready to go,” said Capt. Tim Waits, commanding officer of George Washington. “Not only for the adventure that awaits in South America, but ready to serve as the nation’s forward-deployed naval forces carrier in Yokosuka.”

Chopper 10 was able to capture footage of the USS George Washington leaving Norfolk.

A few families braved the cold winds pier side at Naval Station Norfolk, but most families were at Fort Monroe to wave goodbye. Nevaeh Daniels’ husband is onboard and will be stationed in Washington state.

“He’s excited but it’s a nerve-racking thing,” Daniels said. “It’s his first deployment as well, and first time being away from family. So, we’re nervous for both of us.”

For Commanding Master Chief Randy Swanson, it’s a homecoming of sorts. He was born in Japan when his dad was stationed there.

“I have a picture of myself when I was in the 6th grade,” Swanson said. “My dad was on the forward-deployed aircraft carrier out there. It was a tiger cruise picture of him. And now to go back as the commanding master chief, I mean, a full circle moment, what an honor it is.”

In the past, the George Washington has been tied to tragedy — nine sailors died by suicide between 2017 and 2022. According to the Navy, increased mental health measures for sailors have been implemented.

Moving forward, you can tell it’s on the minds of these sailors, who say you have to make a plan to succeed.

“So right now, I’ve got a crew, like, I’ve got a good group,” Murphy said. “We eat like a real good family. So we make sure, after work, we shine our boots, we listen to music together just to make sure everybody stays afloat.”

USS George Washington will arrive in Japan sometime towards the end of this year.

Kia confirms EV9 GT is launching in January with enormous power

Avatar for Peter Johnson

After Kia’s first three-row electric SUV is already seeing strong demand, the EV9 is set to gain a high-performance GT version. Kia confirmed the EV9 GT will launch in January with “enormous power” and other upgrades.

Kia EV9 set for the GT treatment

Kia launched its flagship EV9 in Korea last June. In less than a month, Kia sold over 1,334 EV9 models and another 1,251 in July.

After announcing US prices start at $54,900, Kia called the EV9 a “wake-up call” to the industry. In the first three months of 2024, Kia has sold over 4,000 EV9s in the US.

Kia has been teasing a high-performance GT trim since its debut, but CEO Ho-Sung Song confirmed it will launch in January during its CEO Investor Day presentation.

The EV9 GT will build on Kia’s first high-performance electric vehicle, the EV6 GT. Kia unveiled the EV6 GT in 2022, its most powerful vehicle so far.

With 576 hp, the EV6 GT can hit 0 to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds. To prove it, Kia put it up against a Ferrari Roma and Lamborghini Huracan EVO, and it beat both off the line.

Kia-EV6-GT

Powered by a 77.4 kWh battery and a dual motor powertrain, the EV6 GT generates 576 hp and 546 lb-ft of torque. Starting at $61,600, the EV6 is cheaper and quicker than most sports cars.

Kia-EV9-GT

Song confirmed the EV9 GT will launch in January, promising “enormous power” with a 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) time in 4 seconds.

An AWD, high-output dual-motor system will offer quicker acceleration. It will also include a reinforced suspension and electronic braking for better stability at high speeds.

Kia-EV9-GT

Next-gen affordable Kia EVs

Kia also confirmed it will focus on affordable electric cars, aiming to become an EV leader by the end of the decade.

Song confirmed Kia will launch six new mass EV models in major markets. Kia revealed the new models, including the EV2, EV3, EV4, and EV5, during its first annual EV Day in October.

Kia-affordable-EVs

The EV5 already launched in China , starting at around $20,000 (149,800 yuan). It will cost around $46,000 (70,000 AUD) in Australia.

Kia will launch the EV3 by the end of this year. The EV3 features the best of the EV9, including design and tech, in a smaller and more affordable package.

Kia-EV3-design

Like Kia’s EV9, the EV3 includes Kia’s new design theme, including a sleek new “Tiger Face” grille. We’ve seen several prototypes out testing as it nears its official debut. The EV3 is expected to start at around $30,000.

Kia-EV4

Top comment by ABM3

I'm all for speed and power. But I honestly don't see the point in the EV9, or other larger 3 row SUVs. Just so the soccer bags and groceries can slam the back of the car harder? For this class, range and maybe towing range would be what would convince me to upgrade. I'll save the 0-60 times for sports cars/sports sedans.

The EV3 will be followed by the EV4, expected to launch next year. Kia’s EV4 is the brand’s take on an entry-level electric sedan.

Kia will introduce two specific EVs in emerging markets, including the Carens EV. By 2026, Kia aims to sell 587,000 mass-market EVs or 66% of its total sales.

Kia-mas-market-EVs

Kia also revealed it will be strengthening its hybrid lineup as it works to introduce new EV models into key markets.

Song said although EV demand is lower than expected in the short term, long-term forecasts remain unchanged. By 2030, Kia aims to sell 1.6 million EVs. Kia’s CEO also revealed it will cancel two large-size EVs as it focuses on smaller, more affordable models.

Moscow cruise port

Region Russia Rivers

Local Time 2024-04-27 15:01

Moscow is a Volga River cruise port, Russia's capital and largest city (population over 12,2 million, metro 17 million). Moscow City covers a total area of approx 2610 km 2 (970 mi2). By population, the city is ranked the world's 14th largest. Moscow is one of the Russian Federation's all 3 federal cities - together with St Petersburg and Sevastopol .

Being Russian Federation's capital, Moscow is a major economic, political, scientific and cultural center, as well as Europe's biggest city.

According to Forbes 2013, Moscow has been ranked as the 9th most expensive city in the world by Mercer and has one of the largest urban economies, being ranked as an alpha global city according to Globalization and World Cities Research Network. It is also one of the fastest-growing tourist destinations in the world according to MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index. Moscow is the northernmost and the coldest megacity and metropolis on the Earth. It's home to Ostankino Tower, the tallest free-standing European structure; the Federation Tower, the tallest European skyscraper; and the Moscow International Business Center.

Moscow is situated on Moskva River in the Central Federal District of European Russia, which makes it the most populated inland city in the world. Moscow city is well known for architecture, particularly its historic buildings like Saint Basil's Cathedral. With over 40% of its territory covered by greenery, it's one of the greenest capitals and major cities in Europe and the world. Moscow is the seat of power of the Russian Government, being the site of Moscow Kremlin, a medieval city-fortress that is now the residence of the President of Russia. Moscow Kremlin and Red Square are among the several World Heritage Sites in the city.

Moscow has 2 passenger terminals, North River Terminal (Rechnoy vokzal) and South River Terminal. The regular ship routes and cruises along Moskva and Oka rivers are used mostly for entertainment. North River Terminal (1937-built) is currently the main hub for long-range routes along the river. There are 3 freight ports that serve Moscow.

In late-July 2021 the city announced plans to incorporate a fleet (unspecified number) of fully electric passenger ferries into its public transportation network from summer 2022, the goal being to reduce the dependence on cars.

  • The boats are designed with length ~22 m (72 ft), passenger capacity 42, modern amenities (Wi-Fi, USB charging points, tables for working commuters), spaces for storing scooters and bicycles.
  • Moscow Transport confirmed that two routes (with max daily capacity ~16,000 passengers) have already been mapped out.
  • Passengers will be able to pay via bank cards, the city’s Troika card (smart card for travel by any public transportation) or biometric payment cards. Those with monthly/yearly public transit tickets will use the boats at no extra cost.
  • The new electric ferry service is up to 5 times faster (in comparison to other city public transports) and ~2 times faster than by car.

Moscow cruise terminal

Moscow's cruise terminal is called North River Terminal or River Station  ("Rechnoy Vokzal" / "речной вокзал").

The terminal was opened in 1937 and is one of 2 passenger terminals (the other being South River Terminal) of the city's river transport. North River Terminal is the main hub for long-range (including cruise) shipping routes.

South River Terminal (above photo) was opened in 1985.
