Tokyo on water: best cruises, boat rides and water sports in Tokyo

Dinner cruises, SUP paddling or kayaking – explore Tokyo's waters with these fun and exciting activities

Tabea Greuner

With its sprawling cityscape, it’s easy to forget that Tokyo is a city defined by water: you'll find Tokyo bay to the east while rivers and canals snake through the concrete jungle into the mountains . From water sports to sightseeing and dinner cruises, here’s how to explore another side of the metropolis through these scenic waterways.

Leisure cruises

Yakatabune Amitatsu

Yakatabune Amitatsu

  • Things to do

Centuries ago in Japan, yakatabune were the pleasure boats of wealthy merchants, aristocrats and military leaders, and they were lavishly decorated, often with tatami mats and low tables for dining. Nowadays, these traditional wooden longboats are seeing a revival as private entertainment vessels for groups to enjoy Tokyo’s night scenery over food and drinks.

However, this doesn’t mean yakatabune are off limits to casual tourists. Yakatabune Amitatsu, which has been in business for over a century, also caters to couples and smaller groups on one of their eight ships, all equipped with a sky deck. Make a booking for the Odaiba-Skytree Cruise, which takes you from Tokyo’s heritage centre, Asakusa, to the modern pleasure island Odaiba. The two-and-a-half-hour cruise comes with a bar and a Japanese dinner that includes tempura and sashimi, and there’s a vegetarian option, too (pre-book during reservation).

In spring, Amitatsu also offers a special sakura tour that takes you to some of Tokyo’s most picturesque riverbanks, all flanked by cherry blossoms.

Keihin Ferry – Factory Night-View Cruise

Keihin Ferry – Factory Night-View Cruise

The Yokohama cityscape is picturesque, but you’re really here for the ‘Blade Runner’-esque vista in the neighbouring city of Kawasaki. The Keihin Factory Zone, to be specific, is made up of massive industrial units, power plants, warehouses and cranes set along canals – and come nightfall, the steely industrial zone is all lit-up, creating post-apocalyptic scenery that looks like it’s lifted straight off a sci-fi flick. It’s a mesmerising sight, especially with the vista reflected in the water.

The 90-minute night cruise departs from Osanbashi Pier, located between Yokohama’s Minatomirai waterfront and Chinatown. It’s a small group on a small boat that’s all the better for navigating through the narrow canals.

Funaasobi Mizuha

Funaasobi Mizuha

A boat ride into the past, Funaasobi Mizuha introduces you to the city’s history through the four main rivers in Tokyo: Nihonbashi, Kamejima, Sumida and Kanda. During the 90-minute tour, you’ll discover the ancient stone walls of the old Edo Castle, historic bridges and railway-related heritage sites, plus ancient waterways excavated about 400 years ago, which go to explain how and why Tokyo is really a city of water.

It’s an illuminating journey that reveals a side of Tokyo few visitors get to appreciate. There’s a knowledgeable English-speaking guide on board and you can bring along food and drinks for a little picnic on the boat. Each reservation comes with a small souvenir and guide to Tokyo’s waterways.

Symphony Tokyo Bay Cruise

  • Restaurants

This is not your standard tourist tootle out-and-back, but a relaxing sightseeing cruise that gives you a brand new perspective on the city. There are multiple sessions from morning to night, taking you out to Tokyo Bay for spectacular views of the iconic Rainbow Bridge, the bustling man-made island Odaiba – which is known for its shopping malls and amusements – and Haneda Airport.

You might just want to enjoy the cruise, but you can turn it into a waterborne meal at one of the boat’s restaurants; options range from French and Italian to Japanese cuisines and there’s even an international buffet. Otherwise, there’s a bar if you want to drink in the view with, well, an actual drink. Park yourself on the open deck and watch the buildings parade past like an architectural catwalk show.

Tokyo no Kaba

Tokyo no Kaba

Every major city seems to have its own gimmicky duck bus, including Tokyo, except here it’s reimagined as the ‘Hippo of Tokyo’ (Tokyo no Kaba). Popular with kids, the journey starts on land in Odaiba and hits the water with a huge splash, with an enthusiastic tour guide narrating as you go. The bus-boat takes a leisurely journey through Tokyo Bay, passing Odaiba Beach, the Rainbow Bridge and the futuristic architecture of the Fuji Television headquarters.

Tours run during daylight hours but adults will appreciate the sunset on the last tour of the day. It might be a trip catering to children, but we’re all kids again when the bus-boat splashes into the water.

Water activities

Tokyo Great Kayaking Tours

Tokyo Great Kayaking Tours

You’ve explored Tokyo by train, on foot, possibly even on two wheels – but what about on water? Tokyo Great Tours lets you travel by kayak and see the city from its canals and rivers. Beginner-level to advanced courses have kayakers paddling under historic bridges, beside train tracks and on the Sumida River, where you’ll get an unparalleled view of Tokyo Skytree. At some point you’ll want to lay down your paddle, lean back and realise you’re floating in the middle of Tokyo.

We recommend ‘Route C’ for beginners: you’ll paddle under highways and the historic Nihonbashi Bridge, and see Tokyo Skytree. You’ll also be a sight to behold yourself: wide-eyed salarymen will wave at you from bridges and fascinated children will point from boats. Hopefully you’ll stay upright for the duration – but as an experience it’ll capsize your whole image of Tokyo.

Yokohama SUP Club

Yokohama SUP Club

Stand-up paddleboarding, or SUP, has grown from its humble origins in Hawaii to become an international sport. Home to Chinatown and the Minatomirai waterfront, Tokyo’s seaside neighbour Yokohama has an SUP scene of its own, with the Yokohama SUP Club educating both beginners and more serious SUP paddlers, and hosting events and a monthly river clean-up.

The certified guides and instructors will teach proper form and paddling techniques so you’re not too sore the next day. You’ll stand-up paddle down the Ooka River, which empties into Yokohama Bay, and see famous sightseeing spots like the Landmark Tower and the giant ferris wheel Cosmo Clock 21 along the way.

Canyons Okutama

Canyons Okutama

White-water rafting? Been there, done that, and so last decade. Adrenaline junkies can now immerse themselves in the water with only a helmet and a life jacket by canyoning, a relatively new adventure sport that uses natural canyons as a real-life adventure park. Tour operator Canyons offers the two-hour Big Holy Canyon tour, where you’ll slide down waterfalls up to 25m tall, zip-line down rivers and jump off precipices from a height of six metres, all in the middle of Okutama ’s lush nature (Okutama is just 90 minutes from central Tokyo).

Looking for a bigger rush? Combine it with a packrafting tour and speed down the white water of the Tama River. However, if you prefer to ease into something less strenuous, opt for the relatively milder Holy Canyon tour – the jumps aren’t so tall and you’ll have time to chill in the river. Be aware that under-13s cannot participate in the Okutama tours; they can, however, join the rafting tours in Minakami, Gunma prefecture.

Sports Club Zac

Sports Club Zac

  • Komatsugawa

Morning workouts might sound drab while on holiday, but how about exercising while seeing Tokyo from water? Sports Club Zac offers stand-up paddling (SUP) tours for beginners and advanced paddlers – you’ll give your arms and core a good workout as you paddle through Edogawa’s Kyunaka River and get a rare view of Skytree without the crowds. If you’re completely new to SUP, don’t worry – the shorter courses stick to calm waters.

Tokyo Bay Cruises

Discover Tokyo Bay in style from these ships

Ignatius Koh

Tokyo Bay is a winding stretch of water that offers extraordinary views of the city's skyline — not just on land. Near Shiba Celestine Hotel , there are cruises around the bay that let you appreciate Tokyo's beauty while gliding on the waters.

1. Symphony Tokyo Bay Cruise

Symphony Tokyo Bay Cruise lets you experience the high life for a couple of hours. With lunch, afternoon, sunset and dinner cruises available, all you need to do is sit on the top deck and enjoy a drink while feasting on local and international cuisine. The Classica yacht brings you to the most popular sights across Tokyo Bay, including the Rainbow Bridge, Tokyo Tower, Tokyo Skytree, and Odaiba before concluding at the Hinode Passenger Terminal.

Cruise and restaurant packages start from ¥1,500 for the shorter afternoon cruise to lavish dinner packages up to ¥20,000. If you decide to splurge it all, the entire yacht is available for booking, and you can have a peaceful afternoon to yourself or your friends.

2. Sumida River Cruise Ship

This cruise ship service might be notable for its futuristic Himiko ship that runs from Asakusa to Odaiba, but the cruise destinations are not too shabby either. Y ou can travel between 12 locations in the Tokyo Bay area, including Hamarikyu Pier for Hamarikyu Garden , Odaiba , and Kasai Rinkai Park — all picturesque locations.

Making the cruise more attractive are its distance-based fares that range from ¥ 200 for a 5-minute trip (for example, from Hinode to Harumi Pier) to ¥ 2,000 (for the 70-minute ride from Asakusa to Toyosu).

3. Gozabune Atakemaru Cruise

Gozabune Atakemaru, also known as the Samurai Ship, takes cruising to the next level, by bringing a brand new experience to Tokyo's waterways. Offering a bay cruise, traditional kabuki-inspired show and Japanese dinner course, the Gozabune combines tradition with modern style. The luxury vessel, an Edo period replica liner like that owned by feudal lords such as shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu, sets itself apart on the waters with its majestic design.

Guests are naturally encouraged to move freely around the boat's deck too during the cruise, with the route providing good views of landmarks such as Rainbow Bridge, Tokyo Gate Bridge and even Tokyo Tower along the way.

The cruise caters to several dining plans, with the whole ship even available to charter for larger groups of up to 500 guests. You can pick from a 40-minute day cruise that departs from Hinode Pier at 14:50, a 75-minute evening cruise departing at 17:30 that includes a show and one drink, or a 120-minute night cruise departing at 19:15 that includes a show and all-you-can-eat food and drink.

Main content starts here.

Updated: September 26, 2022

Eat, drink and be merry on a Japanese pleasure boat

Revel in a waterside entertainment experience that, centuries ago, was restricted only to the wealthy. Feast on traditional Japanese cuisine accompanied by free-flowing drinks on board a yakatabune pleasure boat. Though usually an evening affair, boating companies also offer yakatabune lunch cruises. Whether day or night, relish the feel of the river breeze and admire riverside views from a different vantage point while cruising Tokyo by pleasure boat. After dark, take in the spectacular sight of bright city lights from the deck of your gently cruising yakatabune.

  • The food—sushi, tempura and other seasonal delicacies are typically served
  • The views—especially in spring when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, or during the firework festivals in summer
  • Belt out some classic pop and rock tunes with the onboard karaoke

tokyo boat cruise

A brief history of the pleasure boat

The yakatabune—historically referred to as Japanese pleasure boats— are small ships adorned with lanterns that were used to host dinner parties where guests could mingle and socialize over food and drinks. Each boat was furnished with tatami mats and low tables, and featured entertainment such as music performances and poetry recitals as the boat cruised down the river. The pastime of yakatabune first started during the Heian Era (794-1185) and was a hallmark of ostentatious luxury for feudal lords, samurai warriors, and, later, wealthy merchants. Yakatabune boat cruises opened to the masses only in the late 19th century. Historic Waterfront Areas of Tokyo

tokyo boat cruise

City views from the water

As your yakatabune sets sail, it is time to eat, drink and be merry. Feast on traditional Japanese cuisine such as sushi and tempura, while quenching your thirst at the all-you-can-drink bar of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. As you revel in the jolly mood onboard—karaoke is also typically available—take in the stunning riverside views and city lights. Each vessel can either be booked for a private party, or shared among a number of small groups. With the smoking area generally confined to the top deck, children can also join in the yakatabune experience (please check as this varies from ship to ship).

tokyo boat cruise

Try on traditional Japanese clothing

Spice up your pleasure boat ride by going dressed in traditional Japanese clothing such as a yukata—a casual summertime garment—or a jinbei—an article of loose clothing historically worn as nightwear but now also commonly seen at summer festivals. This will make for some great photographs, and children will also find the experience fun. You can either buy these outfits, especially in summer when many stores sell them at reasonable prices, or they are also available for rent. Do some research online to find the best option.

tokyo boat cruise

Riding the waves

Be sure to secure your yakatabune seat in advance with an online reservation, especially during the peak periods: cherry blossoms season in spring and the fireworks festival in summer. Many cruise operators offer bilingual websites, so making a booking is a fuss-free experience. The boarding points differ by service and operator, though common locations include piers along the Sumida River in Asakusa, or in the Odaiba area. Outside of the peak season, scheduled yakatabune boat cruises tend to run only in the evenings, and last about two and a half hours. Yakatabune Routes

A world of entertainment on the water

If you prefer a yakatabune lunch cruise, you'll probably need to gather up a party of 10 passengers as this is generally the minimum number required to charter a private service (that number does vary with the boat operator, so please inquire for details). Otherwise, go during the peak cherry blossom season when scheduled services also run all day long. Complete your cultural experience by opting, usually for an extra charge, for a performance by traditional Japanese geisha who are skilled in art forms like classical music, dancing, and poetry. Alternatively, take waterside entertainment up a notch by choosing a cruise with a theme, such as a ninja cruise or a fishing tour around the bay.

Sumida River Cruise & Tokyo Bay Cruise: Enjoy Sightseeing and Dining on Tokyo's Beloved Waterway (+Cherry Blossom Tours & Tickets)

Tokyo, a city famed for its vibrant streets and rich history, also boasts a lesser-known aquatic side. The city's heart is cradled by Tokyo Bay and the Sumida River , which have been central to its development and culture. These waters are not just busy trade routes but also home to the 'suijo bus' or water buses. More than just a mode of transport, these water buses offer unique views of Tokyo and sometimes, culinary delights. Let's dive into the world of Tokyo's stylish water buses, blending sightseeing with gourmet experiences on its historic waterways.

Tokyo Cruise – The Standard of Tokyo’s Water Buses

Tokyo mizube line – taking you to the edge of tokyo, japan’s first “on demand” water bus taxi – in tokyo, urban launch – tokyo’s fanciest water bus experience, symphony tokyo bay cruise – enjoy gorgeous views and amazing food, other cruises, cherry blossom cruises.

Tokyo Cruise – The Standard of Tokyo’s Water Buses

Tokyo Cruise, the emblematic name in Tokyo's water bus service, is synonymous with the scenic journeys along the Sumida River . It connects key locations such as Asakusa with Hinode Pier in Hamamatsucho, Toyosu, and Odaiba Kaihin Park . The company operating Tokyo Cruise has a storied history, dating back a century to its origins as the "Sumida River Steamship Company." Back then, it was famed for its issenjoki , or "one sen steamboats," so named because a single journey cost just one sen—a modest sum that translates to about 100 yen in today's terms. These affordable steamboats were a popular mode of transportation among the city's populace, providing an accessible and efficient way to traverse Tokyo's most active areas.

tokyo boat cruise

Today, Tokyo Cruise operates several routes to cater to different interests. The Sumida River Line makes the journey from Asakusa to Hinode Pier, right where the river meets Tokyo Bay. For those looking to explore further, the Odaiba Line connects Hinode Pier directly to Odaiba Kaihin Park . Additionally, the Tokyo Big Sight & Palette Town Line offers a route from Hinode Pier to two of Odaiba 's attractions: Tokyo Big Sight and Palette Town. One of the conveniences of these water buses is that they do not require prior booking. With frequent departures, they provide a seamless and enjoyable way to experience Tokyo's sights from the water. Whether you're traveling between Asakusa and Odaiba or exploring local landmarks , these cruises offer a laid-back sightseeing adventure. While the Asakusa - Odaiba course is particularly recommended for sightseers, it is good to note that Hamarikyu Gardens and Toyosu (home of the Toyosu Fish Market) are also destinations reachable from Asakusa , though there is a limited number of daily departures. For an enhanced experience, the Sumida River Line features an audio guide available for 300 yen in English, Chinese, and Korean. This guide highlights some of Tokyo's iconic landmarks visible from the water, like Tokyo Skytree (R) and the Rainbow Bridge, offering a unique perspective of Japan's bustling capital from aboard a Tokyo Cruise.

Tokyo Cruise boasts two standout vessels in its fleet, the Himiko and the Hotaluna , both crafted under the visionary design of Leiji Matsumoto, the famed mangaka behind iconic series such as Space Battleship Yamato , Space Pirate Captain Harlock , and Galaxy Express 999 . These ships, with their distinctive sci-fi-inspired aesthetics, have become the defining symbols of Tokyo's water bus service. The Himiko and Hotaluna each serve specific routes. The Himiko line ferries passengers from Asakusa to Odaiba Seaside Park and Toyosu , offering a direct link between these bustling districts. The Hotaluna, on the other hand, operates from Asakusa to Odaiba Seaside Park , making a stop at Hinode Pier en route. Aboard the Himiko, travelers are treated to more than just scenic views; an onboard café serves unique sweets and cocktails, enhancing the journey with flavors as adventurous as the vessel's design. Additionally, an audio guide features characters from Leiji Matsumoto's celebrated work, Galaxy Express 999 , enriching the experience with a touch of interstellar fantasy. Finally, special seasonal cruises are also available (see the website here ). In spring , from March 30 to April 3, you can enjoy a cherry blossom cruise in Tokyo. These may be only available via online reservation ahead of the desired cruise date.

The Tokyo Mizube Line is another favorite among both locals and tourists, known for its extensive network of stops. It boasts eighteen boarding points along the Sumida River , stretching from Asakusa to the far reaches of Azusawa and Itabashi , and even to the Saitama prefectural border. Additionally, the line extends along the Arakawa River , reaching as far as Kasai Rinkai Park in Edogawa, showcasing the eastern side of Tokyo. The convenience of no-reservation boarding and the availability of an English audio guide on board make the Tokyo Mizube Line an appealing option for easy and informative sightseeing along Tokyo's scenic waterways.

tokyo boat cruise

The Tokyo Mizube Line operates three main routes. The Asakusa / Odaiba Cruise travels between Asakusa and Odaiba , offering six stops including Sumida Kuyakusho (City Hall), Ryogoku Rivercenter, Etchujima, St. Luke’s Garden , and Hamarikyu Gardens for flexible boarding and alighting. The Asakusa / Kasai Cruise takes you from Ryogoku upstream to Asakusa , then downstream towards Odaiba Seaside Park , and onwards to Kasai Rinkai Park in Tokyo's east, home to attractions like an aquarium and a Ferris wheel. Lastly, the Odaiba Kasai Tour connects Kasai Rinkai Park with Odaiba Seaside Park , traversing a wide swath of Tokyo's bay area. Both the Asakusa Kasai Cruise and the Odaiba Kasai Tour offer views of the Tokyo Gate Bridge, a stunning 8-kilometer-long structure that spans Tokyo Bay, a sight best appreciated from the water on the Tokyo Mizube Line.

Japan’s First “On Demand” Water Bus Taxi – in Tokyo!

In addition to the scenic water buses, Tokyo introduced a pioneering service in 2015: Japan's first "on-demand boats" known as Tokyo Water Taxi. Functioning similarly to traditional taxis, these water taxis offer personalized service across four key areas: Shinagawa , Tsukiji , Nihonbashi, and Asakusa , catering to passengers' specific destinations on demand. Visually, Tokyo Water Taxis stand out, mirroring the iconic look of classic taxis with their bright yellow exteriors. This nod to the famous yellow cabs of New York adds a distinctive charm to Tokyo's waterways. Their innovative approach to maritime transport is garnering significant interest from both locals and tourists, marking a fresh chapter in Tokyo's urban mobility.

tokyo boat cruise

Tokyo Water Taxi provides three enticing options for visitors looking to explore the city's waterways. The Basic Ride - Direct Plan is ideal for those seeking flexibility, allowing unlimited rides over seven days (weekdays only) across 19 different stops, including Tennozu Pier and Toyosu. Conveniently, you can summon a water taxi with a call or online request, similar to hailing a land taxi. This service supports English, Chinese, and Korean, making it accessible to a wide array of travelers. For a more expansive experience, the Basic Ride - Custom Plan offers extended access beyond seven days, including weekends. It features 27 boarding and alighting points, providing passengers the liberty to disembark at any desired location spotted during the journey. This plan is perfect for personalized itineraries, allowing detours and tailor-made cruise tours. The Basic Ride - Recommended Plan caters to those looking for a spontaneous adventure, operating between Tamachi and Tennozu Pier on Wednesday and Friday nights. Although reservations are needed (available in Japanese only), there's a chance for impromptu rides at a low price if spaces are available. This plan is an excellent introduction to Tokyo’s water taxi service for those not ready to commit to a full course. Finally, there are special cherry blossom cruises (operated from March 19 to April 7 in 2024) to enjoy. Since these are chartered, they are best for enjoying with friends or family. What should I eat and drink in Tokyo?

Tokyo is home to some of Japan’s best bars, restaurants, and street food. When it comes to choices and quality, it’s hard to find something that matches Tokyo at scale. Start your culinary adventure walking through the bustling streets and stalls of the Tsukiji Market, the world’s largest fish market that offers other fresh fare as well. No trip to Tokyo is complete without trying some of the hundreds of varieties of sushi or sashimi, either.

Next, treat your taste buds to one of Tokyo’s most popular street foods, monja. So popular, in fact, that it has its own street named after it. The dish is made with pan-fried batter and can be mixed with veggies, seafood, and lots of different local flavors that invoke ultimate Umami feelings with every bite. After you eat, enjoy a carafe of the world’s finest sake in Shinjuku, or join traditional Japanese beer culture celebrations at one of Shibuya’s many small, atmospheric bars.

What is the culture and history of Tokyo?

Tokyo is the current cultural, government, and economic capital of Japan, and one of the world’s top travel destinations for nearly half a century now. Its origins date back some 400 years to when it was called “Edo”, and was the crown jewel of the Tokugawa Shogunate. Tokyo wasn’t really opened to westerners until the late 19th century, when it changed its name and modernized its infrastructure. After a brutal period during World War II, Tokyo reimagined itself in an astounding fashion.

Today, Tokyo is truly a mega city, and one that ecompasses cultural elements from all over Japan. It’s a city that moves at a fast, yet orderly pace, where tranquil gardens and elaborate temples abut modern skyscrapers and glossy shopping malls. English is spoken sporadically, more so in the main tourist areas of Shibuya, Shinjuku, and the city’s center. Make sure to visit some of the city’s parks for a breath of fresh air and to soak in some culture during your stay, too.

Where can I go shopping near the Yokohama cruise port?

Near the cruise port, you’ll find souvenir stands and a couple of restaurants. You’ll have better luck shopping in Yokohama or in the center of Tokyo, though. The Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse is a set of gigantic warehouses on the Yokohama Bay, perfect for strolling the waterfront and shopping. There are hundreds of stores inside filled with locally-made items, coffee shops, and conventional department stores for anything you might need during your time in Japan.

How can I get around Tokyo and Yokohama?

If you’re traveling from Tokyo on the way to board a Yokohama cruise, there’s a train from Tokyo Station to Yokohama that only takes 30 to 40 minutes. At the Yokohama cruise terminal, there’s also a subway station called Nihon-Odori with links to various places. In Yokohama, many tourist destinations are just a short walk away from one another. Of course, taxis are popular in both Tokyo and Yokohama as a primary method to get around the city.

What are the local currency & tipping customs?

Tipping is uncommon in Japan. It’s not widely accepted at hotels or restaurants, and cab drivers do not expect a gratuity. If you have a particularly exceptional guide on a tour or excursion, you can ask before tipping to ensure maximum politeness. Be sure to carry a bit of cash with you in Japan. You’ll find US dollars aren’t accepted in most parts of Japan. Though credit cards have gained popularity, it’s good to have enough yen to cover a minor expense like a cab ride or train ticket.
