“The Mummy 2”: understand why the film with Tom Cruise did not have a sequel

The reboot of ‘The Mummy 2’ was supposed to kick off a new shared universe, but after failing among critics and disappointing at the box office , the entire project was scrapped.

When announced, the film would be the first in a trilogy starring Tom Cruise, which would also be linked to Dark Universe – a monster saga planned by Universal Pictures.

Although it raised $ 408 million worldwide, the feature only earned $ 80 million in the United States. With the huge budget of $ 125 million, the return did not justify the investment.

Finally, “The Mummy 2” and Dark Universe have been canceled.

When the film was released, editor-in-chief Renato Marafon arrived in Mexico City to interview the very likeable Tom Cruise .

In an interview with THR, director Alex Kurtzman spoke about the production and the mistakes he learned from its failure.

“The mummy 2 is not what I wanted it to be. I am no longer involved in it and have no idea what is going on. I look back now and what seemed painful at the time turned out to be a blessing. I’ve learned that I have to follow my own instincts and when I can’t do it, I don’t think I can be successful.

He adds, “[ Os filmes de monstros da Universal ] they are beautiful because the monsters are imperfect characters and we see ourselves in them. I hope these are the films they will make; I want to see them.”

Tom Cruise, Annabelle Wallis, Sofia Boutella, Russell Crowe and Jake Johnson are the stars.

The Mummy starring Tom Cruise has found a new lease on life since its recent addition to Netflix’s ever-expanding library. The 2017 action-adventure horror movie, a bold reboot of the original series with Brendon Fraser, introduced us to Nick Morton, portrayed by Tom Cruise, a daring treasure-hunting soldier who unwittingly awakens the vengeful ancient Egyptian princess, Ahmanet, played by the talented Sofia Boutella. The official synopsis for the movie, as per IMDb , reads:

"“An ancient Egyptian princess is awakened from her crypt beneath the desert, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.”"

As the film now enjoys a new surge in viewership on Netflix, fans and newcomers alike are left wondering: Is there a sequel in the works?

It’s unlikely we’ll see a sequel to The Mummy

According to reports , The Mummy starring Tom Cruise was initially envisioned as the kickoff to a grand shared universe of classic movie monsters, which would have included iconic characters like Frankenstein and Dracula. Unfortunately, the film fell short of critical acclaim and box office success, ultimately leading to the cancellation of the entire project.

So at this present time, it’s unlikely we will ever get The Mummy 2 starring Tom Cruise.

Despite this, The Mummy franchise boasts a dedicated and passionate fan base, particularly for the originals with Brendan Fraser. With the film’s resurgence on Netflix, there’s renewed interest in the series, sparking hopes for its revival. This could be the perfect moment to breathe new life into the franchise with a fresh ensemble of actors.

While it’s currently just a dream, there’s a collective desire to see the original cast return in some capacity to pass the torch to a new generation of adventurous archaeologists. The fate of The Mummy franchise remains uncertain, but only time will reveal whether it will rise from the crypt once more!

Alex Kurtzman is no longer keeping his feelings about making The Mummy under wraps.

Kurtzman, who is a writer, director and executive producer on Showtime’s new sci-fi series The Man Who Fell to Earth , opened up to the Bingeworthy podcast on Friday about his “brutal” experience as helmer of the Tom Cruise -starring film that was an intended reboot of the Mummy franchise. The project, which was released in June 2017 and had been envisioned as launching Universal’s cinematic Dark Universe focusing on the studio’s movie monsters, was unsuccessful critically and commercially , and Kurtzman hasn’t directed a feature since.

“I tend to subscribe to the point of view that you learn nothing from your successes, and you learn everything from your failures,” Kurtzman said. “And that was probably the biggest failure of my life, both personally and professionally. There’s about a million things I regret about it, but it also gave me so many gifts that are inexpressibly beautiful. I didn’t become a director until I made that movie, and it wasn’t because it was well-directed — it was because it wasn’t.”

Kurtzman, who previously worked as a writer on such movies as Transformers (2007), Star Trek (2009) and Cowboys & Aliens (2011), said he understands more about filmmaking after having gone through that process.

“And as brutal as it was, in many ways, and as many cooks in the kitchen as there were, I am very grateful for the opportunity to make those mistakes because it rebuilt me into a tougher person, and it also rebuilt me into a clearer filmmaker,” he shared. “And that has been a real gift, and I feel those gifts all the time because I’m very clear now when I have a feeling that doesn’t feel right — I am not quiet about it anymore. I will literally not proceed when I feel that feeling. It’s not worth it to me. And you can’t get to that place of gratitude until you’ve had that kind of experience.”

Jenny Lumet, who is also a writer and executive producer on The Man Who Fell to Earth , was a guest with Kurtzman on the podcast. Lumet, who has a story credit on The Mummy , said she is “very grateful” to have worked on the film and added, “I don’t think that I could be here now without that experience.”

The Hollywood Reporter’ s 2017 review of The Mummy , which also starred Russell Crowe, Annabelle Wallis and Sofia Boutella, called the film an “inauspicious beginning to a would-be franchise.” It currently holds a 16 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The re-release of Brendan Fraser ’s 1999 classic The Mummy opened in April in honor of the film’s 25th anniversary. According to Box Office Mojo , the action-adventure movie grossed over $1 million across 1,200 theaters in North America. Now that audiences are getting back into The Mummy spirit, its director Stephen Sommers has already debunked early casting rumors surrounding Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt as well as a dangerous B r endan Fraser stunt.

During Brendan Fraser’s career resurgence with The Whale , rumors about The Mummy’s production from its 1999 release resurfaced. As Sommers looked back on the film with The Daily Beast , he debunked a casting rumor that said Cruise and Pitt were first considered for the lead role of Rick O’Connell before Fraser.

“I read somewhere recently that we originally went to Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt [for the role of Rick O’Connell] — but no. My editor read the first draft and right away said, ‘Your lead guy is Brendan Fraser,'” Sommers recalls. “We needed a guy who could throw a punch, take a punch, had a wink in his eye and a sense of humor, and there weren’t a lot of actors at that point who did that. Brendan can make fun of himself and goes all out. He was the only one considered from the get-go. [Universal] weren’t looking for a star; the title was the star.”

Before The Mummy, Brendan Fraser starred in George of the Jungle . Grossing an impressive $174.4 million at the box office, Fraser absolutely had the star power to pull off the lead role.

Tom Cruise did end up making his way to The Mummy franchise in the 2017 remake. Despite aiming to launch Universal ‘s Dark Universe , its poor box office and negative reviews led to that universe’s cancellation.

What About the Rumor Surrounding Brendan Fraser’s Mummy Stunt?

There was another rumor that Brendan Fraser almost died during The Mummy when a hanging scene went wrong. Stephen Sommers claimed the dangers surrounding that scary moment weren’t as bad as headlines made it out to be.

“Brendan put the rope around his neck and got too into it,” said Sommers. “He’s a very eager guy and was like ‘tighten it up . . . make it tight around the neck.’”

Shockingly enough, Brendan Fraser’s carotid arteries cut off during that scene which made The Whale actor go unconscious. Sommers assured The Daily Beast that everyone made sure to stay with him to see he was okay. When Fraser woke up, the American film director said the lead actor had no recollection of what happened.

Another wild rumor existed that The Mummy cast had kidnapping insurance taken out on them while shooting in Morocco.

“My sister sent me an article that said ‘Stephen Sommers took out some sort of insurance on all the actors and never told them.’ No,” said Sommers. “Studios probably take out insurance in case someone dies halfway through but I certainly wouldn’t be the one to take out insurance on any of my actors. We were very well protected in Morocco.”

Luckily, no amount of rumors stopped production and The Mummy went on to become a blockbuster classic you can relive theaters now.

Was Brendan Fraser the first choice to lead The Mummy?

There are stories all over Hollywood about the major movie roles that famous actors almost took. For instance, it's relatively well known that Will Smith was almost Neo in The Matrix . For his part, Tom Cruise has turned down many big roles over the years that we know of. However, it turns out that reports that he turned down 1999's The Mummy , before he starred in the 2017 reboot, are apparently untrue.

25 years ago, Stephen Sommers' The Mummy premiered in theaters, and it launched a franchise. It also solidified Brenden Fraser as a bonafide action star. Fraser might have seemed an unlikely choice to lead a potential summer blockbuster franchise, but Sommers tells The Daily Beast that he was always the first choice for the role, despite what he himself has read over the years. He explained… 

I read somewhere recently that we originally went to Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt [for the role of Rick O’Connell]—but no. My editor read the first draft and right away said, ‘Your lead guy is Brendan Fraser. We needed a guy who could throw a punch, take a punch, had a wink in his eye and a sense of humor, and there weren’t a lot of actors at that point who did that. Brendan can make fun of himself and goes all out. He was the only one considered from the get-go. [Universal] weren’t looking for a star; the title was the star.

While Tom Cruise has certainly shown his skills as an action hero, it’s hard to imagine anybody other than Brendan Fraser in the role of Rick O’Connell in The Mummy . Fraser certainly had a willingness to have fun with the role and poke some fun at himself, something that was key to the character and a tendency that we don’t often see from Cruise. 

The series' eponymous charactor is one of the classic Universal monsters, so it’s not surprising that the idea at the studio was to let the title be the major selling point. Universal had apparently been trying to make a new Mummy movie for the better part of a decade when Stephen Sommers made his pitch. And the director admits he feels that part of the reason he got the job was simply because the studio wouldn’t have to work on it anymore.

The corporation also helped out with the production of the film by being equally disinterested in it. Stephen Sommers says that due to a changing of the guard at Universal amid the start of filming, the new bosses were largely uninterested in a movie greenlit by the previous leadership. And, based on Sommers' comments, it sounds like he had a lot of creative freedom:

[The new boss’s] attitude was ‘if this movie is a bomb, blame it on the last guys. They never gave me notes—and nobody from the studio ever showed up while shooting. They just let me do my thing.

Of course, Tom Cruise would eventually headline a movie that's part of the brand. It was meant to launch the Dark Universe , which was to be an interconnected universe featuring iconic monsters, with big stars playing them. Needless to say, that didn’t happen. 

Since then, largely thanks to Brendan Fraser's Oscar win in 2023 and increased notoriety, there have been calls for yet another true sequel to the '99 flick. With that, Fraser has indicated he'd be up for such a production. Honestly, if there's any question about who was the right man to lead a Mummy movie, only one of them is in a ride at Universal Studios .

In those final moments, Tom Cruise more than just rides off into the sunset; he gallops into the horizon, commanding a supernatural sandstorm that licks at his feet with the powers of Hell. Or is that the underworld? It’s a bit ambiguous, yet oh so clear: The Dark Universe has begun!

Of course as we glimpse at the film, the world-building of this nascent shared universe may be occurring with a very different type of Mummy than as advertised. Indeed, the ending of the film confirms what some have long speculated: While the eponymous Mummy of the 2017 film is as evil as sin, the one to carry her evil legacy into the larger Dark Universe is Tom Cruise. Gifted with all the powers of Set, Cruise’s Nick Morton is now all but unstoppable.

So wait, how did we get here again, who is Set, and what happens next?!

First of all, Set is the god of storms, the desert, chaos, evil, and war. Hence he was not exactly someone ancient Egyptians liked so much as feared. Still he is not actually the Egyptian god of the afterlife or the underworld—that would be Anubis. But The Mummy seems eager to conflate him with Satan, as Russell Crowe’s Henry Jekyll so cheerfully mentions. And either way, Set certainly had Luciferian elements throughout mythology since he is the usurper god who dethroned and murdered his brother Osiris.

In The Mummy , it seems that Sofia Boutella’s Ahmanet made a pact with the evil deity to bring him into our world through a human vessel. And for whatever reason, including perhaps Cruise’s piercing green eyes, she selected the movie star’s Nick for that honor. And the only way to do it is through the human sacrifice method which involved stabbing Nick with a MacGuffin knife adorned with a MacGuffin jewel. The trick worked too. Realizing that like Anubis Set, he would have power over the living and the dead, Nick decided to neither destroy the jewel and save his soul or accept Ahmanet’s embrace. Rather he stabbed himself and took on the powers of Set.

This gave him the ability to take control of Set’s abilities, if only temporarily, and condemn Ahmanet back to death and resurrect his beloved Jenny (Annabelle Wallis) from a watery grave. Now how he was in love with her after a one-night stand and a few intense jogging sessions down London streets is anyone’s guess.

Anyway, Nick thus has the ability to bring back from the dead his best pal Chris (Jake Johnson) and command sandstorms like it’s a Brendan Fraser movie. But what does that mean for the future?

Firstly, The Mummy and Dark Universe at large appear eager to transform their monsters from dangerous creatures to lovable anti-heroes. To be fair, many of the monsters are quite sympathetic in the original canon, including the Phantom of the Opera, Quasimodo, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, and most especially Boris Karloff’s Frankenstein’s Monster and Lon Chaney Jr.’s the Wolf Man. But the Mummy never really was one of them. Like Dracula, he was just kind of a bastard, even if he did it all for the love of the woman in his life.

Making said Mummy an actual woman in this film seemed like a novel idea, but the Dark Universe pretty quickly dethrones her own wickedness and replaces it with a heroic kind. Given Javier Bardem’s Monster and likely the Bride of Frankenstein to come will also be sympathetic, as will the Wolfman if they ever get around to him, it’s conceivable that this universe will culminate in an Avengers -esque superhero team. And I’d be willing to bet Dracula would be the big bad of the whole story.

But to get there, it is curious to see where they go next. With Tom Cruise now essentially commanding all the powers of the Mummy—and it left open-ended whether they’ll permanently damage his good looks with makeup—one piece of the puzzle is complete. The next one in the saga will be The Bride of Frankenstein , which is due out on Feb. 14, 2019. Just in time for Valentine’s Day.

No matter how The Mummy is received, we believe this one will end up getting made, if for no other reason than the Bride is a beloved character in pop culture that could be sold from a whole different vantage. Unlike Alex Kurtzman being hired to build a universe into a mummified wrapping, director Bill Condon has a long history with Bride . After all, he won an Oscar for his screenplay in Gods and Monsters (1998). Ironically enough, that movie also starred Brendan Fraser, but perhaps more importantly it also featured Ian McKellen in one of his finest roles that also got him an Oscar nod.

McKellen played James Whale, one of Hollywood’s earliest auteurs, a World War I veteran, and an openly gay man living defiantly in the early 20th century. He also made some of horror’s cornerstone films: Frankenstein (1931), The Invisible Man (1933), and Bride of Frankenstein (1935).

Obviously a project close to Condon’s heart, the director has reason to strive for something special. The film also is off to a fine start with the casting of Javier Bardem as the Monster. Presumably since this is Universal, he’ll even get to don the flattop. The Creature’s Mate is meanwhile left uncast, but it’s no secret that Universal has long sought Angelina Jolie for the role. That seems still plausible given the studio’s desire to get more distinguished and big-name movie stars. However, if we could make a suggestion, Eva Green seems born to play the role.

Universal also has slated release dates for unspecified films on Aug. 16, 2019 and April 17, 2020, but these notably are not listed as monster movies. Maybe they’re something else (maybe that Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham Fast and Furious spinoff?), or just maybe the studio is waiting to see how The Mummy is received.

The studio certainly has its plans in place. Johnny Depp is expected to eventually play the Invisible Man, who is also not one of the studio’s most sympathetic fiends, but that can be rectified with some rewriting. They also have in apparently active development projects built around Dracula, The Wolfman, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Phantom of the Opera , and The Hunchback of Notre Dame .

It’ll be curious to see if any of these movies actually are quickened to life. Then again, I still suspect Dracula is the universe’s ultimate big bad, so if that means we get a movie of him allowed to be a monster again, as opposed to a bleeding heart tragic hero, that could actually be a bonus .

The Mummy Review #2: Tom Cruise Sinks in This Joyless Disaster

Universal's Dark Universe begins with an epic dud as Tom Cruise flounders in The Mummy, one of his worst movies ever.

Three years ago, Universal announced what would become the Dark Universe franchise; a relaunch of its classic monster movies with A-list actors in the lead. The first installment, The Mummy , is an epic dud that should ring alarms at the studio. It is a joyless, bloated spectacle with a weak script and terrible performances. The film attempts two big changes from the known story. The first is updating the supernatural antagonist to a female. The second is having Tom Cruise play against his wholesome image. Both backfire for a litany of reasons I will discuss in this review. Minor spoilers are ahead.

Tom Cruise stars as Nick Morton, a duplicitous recon soldier that steals antiquities and sells them on the black market. His subordinate and partner in crime is Chris Vail (Jake Johnson), a wise-cracking oaf that follows Nick like a dog. Along with perennial damsel in distress archaeologist, Jennifer Halsey (Annabelle Wallis), they discover the ancient prison of Egyptian Princess Ahmanet (Sofia Boutella). She was damned to eternity for trying place the spirit of death into the body of her lover. When Nick accidentally releases her, she finds a new hunky stud to carry the mojo of the grim reaper.

The Mummy is wall to wall action during its two hour runtime. A few scenes are well done, especially an insane plane crash . The problem is that the other money-shot effects scenes are dark, murky, and all too familiar. I strained mightily to see definition through my 3D glasses. The majority of the big stunts are done at night or in a low lit setting. The center focus on the actors loses acuity in soupy backgrounds. We also have the swarms of insects and mummified undead running around. These types of visual effects were interesting twenty years ago, but commonplace now. The sad irony is that they actually look cooler in Brendan Fraser's Mummy films. The cinematography and 3D conversion are problematic.

Tom Cruise has made a career of playing the clean cut good guy. His attempt to portray a shady character here falls flat. He just doesn't pull it off. The character's dialogue is terrible, but the mannerisms aren't there. I think Cruise was attempting a Chris Pratt, heroic scoundrel vibe. What we get is Ethan Hunt goes mystical. The film's conclusion sort of explains why the character is written as such, but it's just not a successful role for Cruise.

The women in the film, Annabelle Wallis and Sofia Boutella , are wasted. The female baddie is no feminist villain. Her character's mission is just to find a man so she can be his queen. If her character is so power hungry, why is her entire goal to play second fiddle? There's a logic and motivation gap that makes no sense at all. Wallis, a talented actress, spends the entire film being rescued and talking about Cruise's sexual proclivity. It's a running conversation between the leads throughout that isn't funny. In fact, it's quite tasteless and juvenile . None of the women in this reboot hold a candle to Rachel Weisz in the 90's film.

The most important goal of The Mummy is to establish the groundwork for the upcoming Dark Universe films. We are introduced to Prodigium, a secret organization that battles monsters. Its leader is Dr. Jekyll (Russell Crowe). This character will be the thread that ties the franchise together. Once again, the setup is unimpressive. I was completely underwhelmed by Crowe as Jekyll, and his monster turn into the evil Mr. Hyde. This scene should have been a highlight, but is unremarkable. What's even more interesting is the comparison between Cruise and Crowe. Crowe, who is a year younger than Cruise, looks the part. Cruise continues to be an ageless wonder. Scientology might be working in Cruise's favor, the introduction of Prodigium in this film does not.

2017's The Mummy isn't nearly as entertaining as the 1999 film starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. Those characters were fun and likeable. That story worked with the bells and whistles, a true popcorn film. This reboot isn't remotely in the same league. Cruise takes a $130 million dollar mulligan on this one. I pray the forthcoming films are better written, acted, and produced. Universal Pictures' Dark Universe stumbles badly out of the gate.

You don't need to be an explorer or an adventurer or a treasure-seeker or a gunfighter to appreciate the charms of The Mummy .

The 1999 film starring Brendan Fraser at his swashbuckling best came out 25 years ago and has yet to gather dust, subsequent generations happily discovering the same humor, thrills and crackling chemistry between the actor and costar Rachel Weisz that originally dazzled theatergoers.

"I loved being part of a movie that we didn't know if it was an action, comedy, horror, adventure, romance—all of the above," Fraser told Popverse in 2022 . "I think it had so much appeal because everybody wanted a little bit of all of those things I just mentioned. And by whatever movie magic, it came together for us."

The Oscar winner also starred in 2001's The Mummy Returns and 2008's The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and has said he's open to reprising the role of charming rogue Rick O'Connell, "if someone came up with the right conceit." (And he knows what the wrong conceit looks like, pointing to the unfortunate 2017 effort to revive the IP starring Tom Cruise .)

But even if Rick and Evelyn had only awakened one undead prince with an axe to grind, Fraser's place in cinematic history would've still been set in stone. Not to mention, there's enough lore behind the original film to fill a precariously stacked library.

So though you should probably stay away from anything titled "Book of the Dead," no harm ever came from reading these tightly wrapped secrets about The Mummy :

Universal Pictures has the perfect way to reboot the Dark Universe years after Tom Cruise failed to do so thanks to its new vampire horror movie Abigail . The catalog of iconic horror characters at Universal's disposal put the studio in a position where it wanted to relaunch its Dark Universe for modern audiences. Tom Cruise's 2017 movie The Mummy was meant to be the start of a sprawling monster universe that included everyone from the Invisible Man to Frankenstein and Van Helsing. However, these hopes came to an abrupt end after The Mummy 's box office did not match expectations.

With Tom Cruise failing to relaunch the shared universe, the Dark Universe could not move forward, even after the studio infamously brought Cruise, Russell Crowe, Javier Bardem, Johnny Depp, and Sofia Boutella together for a photo shoot to promote the cinematic universe. This left Universal in a position where it began reprioritizing individual horror movies involving monsters and supernatural creatures instead of worrying about setting up the Dark Universe . That has now led to Abigail , and the movie about a Dracula-esque vampire's daughter could now be what gets the Dark Universe up and running again.

2024's Abigail is an exciting reimagining of the vampire horror subgenre, potentially showing the best way to replace a classic character.

Abigail Is A Better Starting Point For A New Dark Universe Than The Mummy

Tom cruise's movie was weighed down by universe plotting.

By the time that Abigail 's ending comes to a close, the movie proves how it could be the perfect reset for the Dark Universe. The film primarily focuses on the main story of survival as the people who kidnap Abigail try to avoid becoming her latest victims. With Radio Silence at the helm, Abigail is a thrilling and gory vampire film that introduces great new characters, including a revamped version of Dracula and his daughter. It is through this approach that the movie still manages to plant enough seeds that there is a greater mythology at play in Abigail 's universe .

The difference between Abigail and The Mummy is that the newer vampire flick is able to get audiences invested in this world and characters and leaves them wanting more. The Mummy was not able to do that. The film was weighed down by expectations that it would set up the Dark Universe. This meant including several moments that felt like they were only included to set up a larger franchise, like Russell Crowe's Dr. Henry Jekyll appearing. That distracted from the main story The Mummy was telling, leaving audiences without strong connections to Tom Cruise's character.

Abigail 's smaller focus and expectations gave it a major advantage over The Mummy . Abigail could work as a standalone vampire movie and still be a satisfying adventure without Joey and Abigail's story continuing. However, The Mummy was much too focused on being big enough and successful enough that the Dark Universe plans could come to fruition. The end result was The Mummy being maligned by critics and performing moderately at the box office, while Abigail 's Rotten Tomatoes score is incredibly high and word of mouth is strong.

Abigail's Horror Approach Would Be Great For The Dark Universe

The dark universe can be scary again.

One of the biggest benefits to Abigail launching the Dark Universe would be how it utilizes the horror genre. The film fully leans into the amount of scares and blood that should be in a vampire movie. The Radio Silence team are no strangers to reinventing horror franchises for modern audiences after their work on Scream , and they have done it again with Abigail . It might seem obvious that a vampire movie should embrace the horror genre, but that is not what the Dark Universe did before.

Even before The Mummy really tried to launch the Dark Universe, Universal's 2014 movie Dracula Untold attempted the same. The vampire movie had some tinges of horror, but the PG-13 movie leaned more into action when it could. The Mummy went a step further with that approach by utilizing Tom Cruise's greatest strengths to make the film a major action blockbuster, one that just happened to include supernatural creatures. Although none of the other canceled Dark Universe movies were made, it seems that Universal wanted PG-13 movies that skewed more action than horror to be made.

Abigail establishes the precedent for R-rated, full-horror entries in a potential new Dark Universe. After seeing how well it worked with vampires, Universal could apply the same approach to other characters. The studio already did so with Invisible Man in 2020, and the upcoming The Wolf Man reimagining could do the same. It would make sense for any other potential additions to a new Dark Universe would follow Radio Silence's lead with Abigail and give the iconic horror creatures the genre treatment they deserve.

Abigail's Shared Universe Teases Set Up How The Dark Universe Can Be Reborn

Other universal monsters could exist in abigail's universe.

There is already some groundwork for how Abigail could relaunch the Dark Universe thanks to the world it sets up. Abigail's father is designed as a stand-in for Dracula , and the movie includes enough teases that he is the proper version of the legendary vampire for Matthew Goode's character to take on that role in future installments. There are no other Universal Monsters who definitively or subtly are suggested to exist in Abigail 's universe. But, the movie does tease that Abigail and Ready or Not exist in the same universe , which could be key to a new Dark Universe beginning.

Abigail 's Ready or Not Easter egg is notable beyond the Radio Silence connection because it means that demons also exist in this world. The fact that demons and vampires are now confirmed to occupy the same franchise is a great way for Universal to get the Dark Universe off the ground. It now becomes easier to accept that other supernatural beings and characters exist in this world beyond vampires. This could be how Wolfman, Frankenstein, The Mummy, Invisible Man, and other classic Universal Monster characters are seamlessly introduced.

Will Universal Move Forward With Abigail's New Dark Universe?

Abigail was not intended to launch a shared universe.

Just because Abigail could be the start of a new Dark Universe doesn't mean that it will. The fate of the potential new horror franchise is undecided. Universal has not confirmed any plans for Abigail 2 to be made, nor that the film will directly connect to any other upcoming horror movies. The studio has learned from The Mummy and the previous attempt to launch the Dark Universe. Instead of announcing an entire slate of interconnected horror movies, Abigail is currently just another standalone movie. Abigail, her Dracula-inspired father , and Joey are all left with uncertain futures as a result.

If a new Dark Universe does start, Abigail 's box office is likely the key. The movie was made on a budget of $28 million, meaning it needs to make nearly $60 million at the box office to break even for Universal. It would only be at that point that the studio would probably consider continuing the franchise, let alone expanding it into a Dark Universe reboot. Considering Abigail has not even made its budget back at the box office worldwide, it is far from guaranteed that audiences will get a chance to return to this universe and watch it grow.
