Graphite Design Tour AD HD Shaft Review

50 Words or Less

The Graphite Design Tour AD HD shaft has a smooth feel with a pleasant kick in the mid/tip.  Boring flight with mid launch.

Introduction

As the husband of a school psychologist, the name “Tour AD HD” gives me a laugh every time that I see it.  But in the case of the latest from Graphite Design, the HD stands for Hyper Drive.  With sci-fi images of light speed drives dancing through my head, I took this new offering to the range to see what it could do.

Check out the new Graphite Design Tour AD UB HERE

When I first got the info on the Tour AD HD, I thought, “We’re going to have a problem.”  I am a proud Duke grad, and I do not do light blue.  Thankfully, despite what it looks like in the photos, the Tour AD HD is not powder puff blue, it’s a few shades darker with a pronounced sparkle to it .

The graphics on the Tour AD HD are classic Graphite Design.  There’s modest branding near the grip with wraparound rings of black and blue.  There’s a small “Accuracy and Distance” logo at the tip, but otherwise the shaft is totally distraction-free near the ball.

Graphite Design has been a trend setter in sharing exactly how each of their shafts bends.  They break each model down into “Butt,” “Mid,” and “Tip” and give it a rating from Very Stiff to Soft.  In the past, my sense of each shaft has aligned with this chart, but the Tour AD HD has proven to be a small exception.

Per Graphite Design, the Tour AD HD is, from butt to tip, Firm, Firm, Firm+ (Firm is in the middle of the Graphite Design spectrum).   This indicates that the shaft is stiffest in the tip section.  While I would agree that the shaft has a medium-stiffness overall, I sensed the most kick in the mid/tip .  This is a good example of how feel is subjective and that players will feel differently about a shaft based on their swing.

Performance

Graphite Design bills the Tour AD HD as being “Mid Launch, Mid/Low Spin” which matches the results I saw on both the launch monitor and on the course.  The ball came off the face in my normal window with an extremely strong flight .  Given the kick that I felt, I was expecting slightly higher spin, but every drive bored through the wind unaffected.

Something I enjoyed about hitting the Tour AD HD was the way it responded to more aggressive swings.  When I made an easy swing, the shaft gave a light kick and sent the ball straight down the middle.  If I gave 110%, the shaft kicked harder and produced a tight draw .  I never felt like I was overpowering the shaft, rather I had the ability to hit two different shots just by changing my effort.

One of the big advancements in premium shafts over the last few years is the way softer profiles can handle mishits.  Thanks to advanced materials like Graphite Design’s TORAYCA carbon fiber, shafts can have a smooth feel and also keep poor strikes on line.  I was very impressed by how the Tour AD HD produced respectable results from poor swings .  It took a truly awful effort to produce big slices or hooks.

The Graphite Design Tour AD HD is available in weights ranging from 40 to 80 grams .  At 40 grams, R2, R1, and Stiff are the available flexes.  Everything from R2 to X is offered at 50 grams.  In the 60 gram range, Graphite Design offers the Stiff/Regular, Stiff, X, and Tour X.  The 70 gram family has S, X, and TX.  Finally, the heaviest versions, 80 grams, are available in only stiff and X.

Every year, Graphite Design finds a way to add a new, interesting profile to one of the largest, most complete shaft families in golf.  The Tour AD HD blends a smooth feel with low spin and impressive stability in a way that will win over plenty of players.

I play a mid 70 gram x stiff shaft, which works well enough but might be a tad heavy as I haven’t been to the gym since the Corona regulations made it unenjoyable. How would you compare a 60 gram tx to a mid 70 gram x stiff. I’m just looking for a generalized opinion. I’m not going to go pay 100 bucks to get fit again when that’s probably what I would spend on a shaft on ebay. Current shaft is atmos 7x tour spec, looking for something similar in specs to Tiger’s 60tx. Thanks

As a veteran commenter, I think you know what I’m going to say here. It depends on the individual. It should reduce fatigue across the board, but whether that leads to more draw, more fade, or more speed just depends on the player.

This thing sounds nice….

I would love to see how you felt it compared to the Ventus Blue or Black. let me know your thoughts.

Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t this profile very similar to the XC? If so, can you say which you prefer?

No, I would not agree that the XC is very similar to the HD. I have a full review of the XC here: https://pluggedingolf.com/graphite-design-tour-ad-xc-shaft-review/

Hi Matt Looks like the closest Graphite Design in terms of specs is the TourAD TP Did you get the chance to compare both shafts? Thanks

Yes, I have a full review of the AD TP here: https://pluggedingolf.com/graphite-designs-tour-ad-tp-shaft-review/

Great review Matt, thanks for the insight! Question for you – my typical launch stats mirror those in the above launch monitor data (rarely above 105 swing speed), with exception that my steep swing produces heinous spins that you’d want in a 6I, resulting in my total distance getting killed. I’m in the 50+ club, with shoulder issues, so focus is on playing for many years to come and trading more flexibility for strength. Working with my pro on the swing to change attack angle in my swing, but would like to invest in a GD Tour shaft – how might the AD-HD-6 stack up to either the AD-IZ-6 or AD-VR-6 if I’m trying to improve my launch angle while trying to keep spins rates down? thanks

Unfortunately there’s no way for me to give you a reliable answer to that without having you try them. I could tell you which has the stiffest tip, which in theory would knock spin off, but that shaft might not work for you at all.

My advice would be to get into a place where you’re happy with your swing, then get a fitting where you try everything. Graphite Design is great, but there’s no reason to limit your choices.

Matt, did you have any issues with swing weight with your Ping head or did you like the balance point ?

I didn’t have any particular issues with it.

' src=

I’m curious why you swing speed fluctuates so much with certain shafts? I noticed the Tensei 1K White, Diamana TB, etc. your swing speed is up to 109 MPH, but many others you’re at 105 MPH. Are you switching between 6X and 7X shafts for different shaft testing?

Did you look at the dates on the reviews? Plugged In Golf is closing in on eight years of reviews. Over that time, my speed has been up and down due to injuries, training cycles, seasonality, and, in small part, the equipment being tested.

' src=

What GD AD shaft would be close to the YS6+ stiff shaft (med, med, med/soft profile). Was looking at AD DI (but tip is stiff) or AD HD (similar but overall a bit firmer). Any ideas? thanks

Graphite Design breaks down all their Tour AD shafts in a chart on their site, which is linked in the review above.

I had a chance to take about 50 swings with the AD HD tonight in an Epic Max LS 9 degree head, and really loved it. Really smooth, nice kick, stable, and the launch was consistently right around what I’m looking for. I would say I felt the kick more in the mid, not the tip, but Matt, as you point out, different swings mean we experience shafts’ characteristics differently, and it was smooth overall. It might have just been a good night, but I felt like I could really go after it with the HD and my swing speed was up about 3 mph from my normal 101-102ish. I’m planning to do a driver and fairway wood fitting this winter, but I expect the AD HD to be in the mix for my driver (and the Diamana BF or TB to be a top contender for my fairway wood).

Graphite Design Tour AD HD Shaft Review – Plugged In Golf

I’m really impressed with the Graphite Design Tour AD HD Shaft. It’s a great shaft for those who are looking for a high performance shaft.

' src=

Do you have any recommendations for similar profile mid launch/low spin wood shafts? Ventus blue perhaps?

Appreciate your time. Thanks!

My best advice is to get fit. I don’t know anything about your swing, your game, or why you’re looking for an alternative to the AD HD, so I can’t make an educated suggestion.

Updated February 2024 to update current pricing information.

Graphite Design shafts continue to be some of the most well-known and widely used golf shaft for amateur and professional players. Models like the Tour AD DI have become synonymous with high performance. The Tour AD HD (Hyper Drive) shaft looks to compliment the AD DI and others to provide golfers with a better fit when looking for middle launch and mid to low spin conditions. The Tour AD HD uses the same aerospace grade materials as all the premium Graphite Design shafts and comes in a elegant matte white and blue finish. This review compares the Tour AD HD to other premium golf shafts and dives deep into what the new AD HD shaft can offer golfers looking to upgrade their metal woods.

Fairway Jockey - Custom Shaft | Graphite Design Tour AD HD Wood Shaft

  • The Tour AD HD shaft offers a middle launch and mid to low spin to create more distance and accuracy for some golfers.
  • The Tour AD HD is made with TORAYCA T1100 and M40X materials to improve control and accuracy even at high club head speeds.
  • Graphite Design offers the Tour AD HD in a wide variety of weights and flexes to fit almost all golfer types.

The Graphite Design Tour AD HD golf shaft is ultra-premium meaning that it is an expensive upgrade choice. Golfers that are serious about their game can level up their performance when the AD HD is built for them. The AD HD is perfect for golfers looking for a well-balanced ball flight that provides more accuracy and more distance either off the tee or coming from the deck with fairway woods. The mid launch and mid-low spin profile of the Tour AD HD makes it well-suited for golfers with a variety of club head speeds and many of the top driver head choices this season.

Graphite Design Tour AD HD Shaft Detailed Review

The Tour AD HD is created with TORAYCA MX40 carbon fibers and T1100 pre-preg to increase the stability without overloading the stiffness. The result is a shaft that is easy to load and incredibly powerful. Fast taper technology helps create a well-balance loading profile so that golfers at a variety of speeds can find their ideal ball flights. Like all other Graphite Design shafts, the Tour AD HD shaft is crafted using a Material Stiffness Integration that ensures higher tolerances during the build and a smoother feel during the golf swing.

The Tour AD HD golf shaft profile is categorized as middle launch and mid to low spin. The AD HD shaft has a firm butt and middle section with a tip section rated firm+. Tour AD HD shafts come in weights of 40, 50, 60, 70, and 80 grams with flexes ranging from Lite/Senior to Tour Extra-Stiff. We recommend seeing a professional club fitter to match your Tour AD HD shaft with your swing and club head selection for the best results.

Graphite Design shafts continue to be one of my favorite performance lines for golfers at a variety of club head speeds. For golfers looking to dial in not only their driver, but also their fairway woods and hybrids, the Tour AD line is one of the best to find balanced performance in several different clubs. The Tour AD HD is an excellent addition to other Tour AD shaft like the AD DI and AD IZ because it offers a bit more kick through impact and can help golfers get more out of their swing. For the driver, the Tour AD HD can provide a blend of medium launch and low spin that results in more distance. In the fairway woods the AD HD can provide easier launch and allow golfer to hit their clubs better from lies in the fairway and rough. It you are a golfer that fits into the Tour AD HD I have no doubt that it can instantly upgrade your performance and enable you to hit more high quality golf shots immediately.

Graphite Design continue to update their Tour AD shaft line to provide golfers with ideal fitting golf shaft no matter what swing type and swing speed they have. The Tour AD HD shaft is perfect for golfers that want to raise their launch without immediately increasing their spin. In both drivers and fairway woods, the Tour AD HD shaft performs well and should be tested by golfers looking to optimize their setups this year.

Graphite Design Tour AD HD Shaft Review

James Miles

One shaft company who gets a lot of praise throughout all fitting circles for their attention to details and materials is Graphite Design. For many years now they have continued to evolve one of the most in-depth premium shaft fitting matrixes on the market.

In 2020 they are adding another into the fold, the Tour AD HD ( H yper  D rive), and we at THP were able to get it in hand prior to its release for a full rundown of tech and performance.

tour ad hd shaft review

The Graphite Design Tour AD HD shaft brings possibly the slickest aesthetic we have seen from the company, keeping the simplicity and adding gorgeous blue and white pearlescent flair. More importantly, the inclusion of MX40 into the mix with T1100G made for a shaft which kept that renowned Graphite Design feel but with a level of stability that stands out.

Tour AD Hyper Drive – Design Features

At first glance, those familiar with Graphite Design are going to want to compare the new HD model with previous releases from the company, and looking at the chart the company updates with each release (following this section), it will draw some similarities in profile to other releases. With that, I think it is important to point out that they differ from practically all other shaft companies in that they are continuously adding to their fitting matrix rather than simply modernizing old profiles. As a shaft is added, it has a fit in the spectrum they are trying to fill and that is very cool to see in todays market.

tour ad hd shaft review

Every Graphite design shaft follows a similar naming mechanism in that it is a Tour AD ( A ccuracy and  D istance) shaft with an accompanying two letter identifier which stands for something. Undoubtedly, most reading are familiar with the AD DI, also known in some circles as the Tiger Shaft, where the DI stands for  D eep  I mpact. Here, the HD means  H yper  D rive, and its all about energy creation with control.

The Tour AD HD utilizes two “showcase” materials, TORAYCA T1100G and TORAYCA M40X prepreg. For those unfamiliar with shaft design, materials matter, and both of these are carbon fiber materials which focus on tensile modulus (ability to resist separation) and tensile strength (maximum stress before breaking).

tour ad hd shaft review

T1100 has become a bit of a “hot” term when it comes to shaft marketing, but the reality is, it is a very expensive material which offers super high modulus and strength with less resin to make for more weight savings. T1100 is used in the tip section of the Tour AD HD (and other GD shaft models) and it is all about increasing stability through impact without losing feel or adding weight.

The TORAYCA M40X material is maybe the bigger story here for Graphite Design. This is a new material being utilized in the mid to tip section of the Hyper Drive which bucks the previous issue of having to choose a pre-preg which was either high in modulus or strength, but not both. This material claims to be over 30% stronger than conventional fiber materials while not adding any weight to the design, which is what let Graphite Design really tune the profile to increase stability and control without losing the feel they are known for. M40X means more loading, more energy creation, and more distance without the loss of control

tour ad hd shaft review

Rounding things out, Graphite Design uses two proprietary design features called MSI ( M aterial  S tiffness  I ntegration) and FTT ( F ast  T aper  T echnology). MSI is the foundation to all of their shaft designs and utilizes different materials, stiffnesses, and volumes to control the amount of resin within the design (and where) to help control vibrations and generate “feel”, basically always seeking to avoid the “boardy” term you sometimes hear about with other shaft designs. The FTT is simply manipulating the shaft taper in a certain section to create the shaft profile, the HD uses the same placement as the TP running from mid-to-tip.

In all, I thought it important to run all of this down because it goes to show what Graphite Design puts into these releases and helps explain why they are a premium shaft company that has a bit of an aura about them. Materials are always top notch, quality is always among the best in the industry, and with that it makes the $500.00 price tag much more understandable.

Tour AD Hyper Drive – Performance Experience

For this review I worked with the Tour AD HD in 7X. I paired it with a TaylorMade SIM Max 9.0 and built it out to my preferred 44.75” playing length and a D4 swing weight. I worked with the Hyper Drive both on the course during rounds as well as on the Foresight GC2 in order to get a full picture of what was going on with the profile for me. I do want to throw out that as always, shaft reviews are tough because fit matters so much, so hopefully this provides a baseline for you and you will then go out and see how it fits your swing.

tour ad hd shaft review

The 7X comes in at 76g and has a torque rating of 2.9° with a mid kick-point. As you will see in the specs below, the Hyper Drive comes in a plethora of flexes (R2, R1, SR, X, TX), weights (45 to 85 profiles), and torques (2.6° to 5.7°) so the fitting option on this design are extensive with 16 total shafts under the umbrella.

tour ad hd shaft review

The Tour AD HD is listed as a low to low/mid spinner with a mid-launch basis, additionally, through Graphite Design’s quite cool comparison chart we see it listed as Firm in the hands and mid-section with a Firm+ tip. This is pretty comparable at first glance to the AD TP which I have previously played in 7X and compared to the new HD, but I’ll get to that in a minute.

As you’ll see in the Foresight GC2 data below, launch was not an issue and the spin rates stayed in a range that hit the low/mid label that Graphite Design put on the HD. For those that have read my shaft reviews before, you might look at the launch and peak heights with some shock, let me say 2020 has been a year of swing evolution for me so a large chunk of that comes from a positive AoA. That said, I saw enough on course and monitor compared to other shafts that I absolutely believe the AD HD 7X is a mid-range launcher as it is classified.

tour ad hd shaft review

Given my previous experience with the Tour AD TP and IZ releases, there was a sensation of stability/stoutness that stood out more than I had experienced before. I’m going to give a large amount of credit for that to the new M40X material, but what was really mind-bending on the course was the profile keeps a flow through the swing that is right in line with that Graphite Design focus on feel, harshness was non-existent and I would not expect anything less from them. Dispersion wise, I felt like I could go after the HD and it responded the more I turned after it, sure there were some right and left variances when you look at the data but that comes back to me being a mortal and not a machine. This is one I came away believing I could take an aggressive line and the shaft was going to hold up and do its job, which is about all one could ask for.

tour ad hd shaft review

For those curious, yes, I did compare the HD to the TP in the same weight/flex/length side by side. Again, I caution you to remember with shafts one golfers fit isn’t everyone’s, but I actually saw more spin out of the TP on average (498 RPM) which lead to a slightly higher launch angle and peak height. This was my experience, so yours might vary, but I can say without any doubt I did find the new HD to be more stable feeling, which I didn’t expect coming in. In all, it is another more than capable entry into the impressive catalog of Graphite Design.

Graphite Design Tour AD HD Shaft Review

Graphite Design Tour AD HD Shaft Review

By DanSueltz March 27th, 2021

The Graphite Design Tour AD HD shafts is the latest in the great lineup of Tour AD shafts from Graphite Design.

Use our  Driver/Wood Fitting Wizard to see which of these shafts may fit YOUR swing!

Designed as Hyper Drive, the HD  wood shafts have a firm butt section, firm mid and firmer tip section for added stability and reduced spin.  This shaft actually improves on the design of the Tour AD XC  The Tour AD HD utilizes new MX 40 pre-preg materials from TORACAY for added stability and feel.

Well known for their relatively soft mid section, the Tour AD HD is a slight departure for Graphite Design offering golfers a firmer feel at impact.  This is similar to the Tour AD XC (Xtreme Carry) shaft.

Available Models

The Tour AD HD is available in five different weights from 49 to 88 grams at raw length.   The Tour AD HD 4 is available in Senior, Regular and Stiff flex.  The HD 5 is available in Senior, Regular, Stiff and XStiff.  The fact that the lighter weight shafts are available in X flex is a tribute to the fact that certain stronger players can do well with stiffer shafts.  The most popular weight HD 6 is available not only in Senior, Regular, Stiff and XStiff but Tour Stiff as well.  The HD 7 is available in Stiff, XStiff and Tour Stiff while the HD 8 is only available in Stiff and XStiff.    For stronger players, the HD 7 and HD 8 will work great in fairway woods!

Shaft Profile

Our proprietary testing, while very similar to a traditional EI (elasticity index) curve, is a load profile that shows the load a shaft that is bent a particular deflection length puts on a specific point on the shaft.  We determine our trajectory and feel characteristics based upon these measurements.

Trajectory and Spin

The HD 4 has a mid-high trajectory and mid-high spin, which is excellent for juniors and slower swing speeds in general.  The HD 5, HD 6 and HD 7 are mid trajectory and mid spin across all flexes.  The HD  8 is mid to mid-high trajectory and spin.  Tipping any of these shafts will reduce the launch angle and resulting trajectory slightly.

Release and Feel

Feel is a very subjective performance factor and difficult to accurately specify.  We use a combination of torque (higher torque means softer feel) and shaft stiffness profile.  The HD 4 and HD 8 will have the softest feel, while the HD 5, HD 6, and HD 7 will have a much firmer feel.  That is mostly because mid section of the shaft is very firm, compared to other Tour AD models, giving the feel of a one-piece shaft at impact.

These shafts will be a great addition to the Tour AD line, especially for players liking a mid trajectory and a  slightly firmer feel at impact.

It seems I am reviewing a sleeper here!

I recently purchased an AD HD 7x driver shaft and wanted to share my initial thoughts.  Often times when I purchase new equipment I don't feel compelled to review it because (1) I don't love it THAT much and (2) there are already countless threads singing it's praises.

I will start by saying this isn't a Trackman numbers based review, it's real life, grass driving range swings in a TSi3 10*.

I have gamed an Aldila Rogue White 7X flex in my driver for the last two years.  Before that I played a Tour AD DI 7x for the better part of a decade.  I moved to the White because I started to find the AD DI felt a little "loose."  (However, when I take my old AD DI 7x, 915D3 combo to the range I immediately wonder why I ever let it go.). The White isn't sexy, it's not premium, heck, it's not even the once universally drool inducing "TX" version of the White (owned it, liked it, just not as much). Just the plan ole X flex White!

Given that the White X isn't sexy, I've worked unreasonably hard to kick it out of the bag.  Yet, it remains.

I have tried the White 1k TX, the Orange 1k TX, the Ventus Blue TR 6x and the Ventus TR 7x this year.  After multiple range session with the aforementioned shafts I always come back to the White X.

Fast forward to this week when I have been testing the AD HD 7x.  Let's just say I love it more than my ex-wife who had vicious ADHD (sorry, couldn't resist).

The shaft was comfortable from the start and I attribute that to the lineal nature of the flex.  As all the previous technical reviews have said, it basically has a similar stiffness in the butt, mid and tip.  What this results in for me is a very straight ballflight with consistent height, no matter how good or bad of a swing I put on the ball.  it's really just remarkably consistent.

As my "relationship" with this shaft moves forward, I will be sure to review it more.  However, my initial impression is that this is a HIGHLY underrated and reviewed shaft here on WRX.

Love the HD. I have a 7X in my 3 wood right now. It feels like a lot of the GD shafts, but with a tighter handle and the kick a little lower. I like it a lot as a driver shaft, too -- just wound up going with the Diamana TB instead there for now.

Had the HD 6TX earlier this year.  Don't get me wrong it's a good shaft but it didn't work for me.  Saw the ball going left far too often when I went for the fences so it had to go.  I will say that like the latest gen AD shafts, it's got really good feel to it.  Dare I say that the UB and HD feel better than the latest gen Tensei, Diamana or Ventus line for me.  Glad to see the HD is working out for you OP.

Seems you've also hit a bunch of GD shafts. Did you tip them? Which was the best GD shaft for you (even though you're in the TPO now)? Have you hit the TP or IZ?

I will be testing the XC, IZ, and UB this week, and the UB is tipped .5".

I've got three ADHD's in my bag- love them.

They've been tipped one inch.  I really enjoyed the UB out the bunch.  My cousin has the TP so yes and I've tested the IZ.

I 100% agree about the UB. Probably best feeling GD I have hit and I have basically hit them all at this point. UB would still be in my bag if not for the Ventus Black. I should have tipped my UB though and it probably would have been closer..

The UB is such an awesome fairway wood shaft.

I have three fairway woods right now -- a 3W with the HD 7X and a 5W with a DI 8X that are my gamers, and a 3W with a UB 7X that I'm also really loving (and honestly I need to sell one of the 3Ws, but I just can't decide which one I like best).

I think the UB a terrific blend of everything that makes Graphite Design shafts so good. Its softer handle and mid-section feel amazing and help keep my tempo and transition from speeding up too much -- which is the same reason the DI has worked really well for me for a long time. But it's more stable and keeps the ball flight down a little compared to the DI. It also has a bit of the HD's crispness and snappiness through impact.

I've definitely been thinking about switching from the DI 8X to a UB 8X with my higher-lofted fairway wood. I'm mostly just hanging tight until I get a chance to try the TSR woods and see if Titleist offers the UB as a custom option.

This was my result for many GD shafts, and why I haven't tried the HD or UB.  The only GD shafts that don't go left on me are the XC and BB.  Also have a GP that I can game, but I can't step on it...

How does the GP compare to others you've played or tried? It's one of the only GD shafts I haven't hit, and I've been curious about it.

@eric61 :  It is very tip-stiff.  The XC is the only other GD shaft I've hit that feels as stable in the tip. Note that I've never hit the M9003, which is supposed to be the most stable shaft in their lineup.

I feel more mid-shaft hinge in the GP than I do in the XC.  Probably why I get along with the XC better.  GP and BB felt pretty close.  When I slowed down my transition with the GP I could play a nice cut.  But if I stepped on it, the left side came into play.

All other GD shafts I've hit (DI, VR, MT) felt softer and all of them went left.  Though the VR was more of a controlled draw, so I probably could have made that work if I had to.

From softest (most left friendly) to stiffest (least left friendly) to me: DI, MT, VR, GP, BB, XC

Good to know! It sounds like the exact reasons the XC was better for you would make the GP better for me. I like a stiff tip and a mid-hinge in driver shafts. I get that to an extent with the HD, but imagine the GP might be a little lower-launching and more abrupt in its transition from softer to stiffer areas?

They're both softer in the handle, so if you like a white board type profile, it might be worth testing.

GP and HD a very similar launch IMO.  If anything the HD might launch one degree higher.  They feel different though.  HD is smooth with a little bit of kick to it whereas the GP has a little kick but also less feel IMO.  I'm willing to bet that it has to do more with the materials used more specifically the T1100 in the HD which gives it better/smoother feel.

Thanks

I sprayed the ball all over the place with the DI. UB is much more stable IMO and feels smoother.  I struggling with the lefts atm with the ZF especially when I step on it in my 3 metal so I'm contemplating whether I should wait for the Kai'li Blue, TPB 1K or possibly go with something else like the UB or HD.  Thing is, the ZF just feels right/good. Decisions, decisions.........

Ah ok you got me there then.  The GP still has less feel for me, so it must be something else.  Maybe the M40X?

To me the GP has less feel as well.  I’m not sure what it is honestly.  I think the HD has the fast taper technology that the TP and VR have so that may have something to do with it.

It's weird, but you either love stiff handle shafts or hate them.  I did fare well with the Ventus Black but didn't love the way it felt.  Nowadays I'm rolling with linear low/low shafts but like the softer handle shafts aka white board profile.  Something about the UB where it feels really good but doesn't feel all loose and whippy.  Just a tiny kick at the bottom for me yet so stable.

I thought I liked more of a blueboard profile but through learning about GD shafts from experienced players like yourself, and trying many models, I have found I do well with a stable shaft that has a softer handle so it does not feel too stiff. (In Ventus, I am a fan of the Red.)

I have the XC in driver and the BB in a fairway and if I switched, would probably be for the UB. I like how the softer handle lets me feel the club shallowing at the top. Helps me to be patient with my shoulders/arms so they arrive on time, after my lower body, instead of the other way around. I can hit lots of shafts, but a shaft that helps my sequence puts the ball in the fairway more.

I find the XC easy to fade or draw and it is smoother by a smidge than the BB. GD shafts feel so smooth and yet solid, that’s my favorite thing about them.

I am a GD guy and have pretty much played all except the XC. Played the HD for months and keep getting fit into the TP and using it for the third time in a Rogue ST now. Feels ok, goes a little high and don’t feel the same kick as the HD (which got loose).  IZ is a bomber for sure, but too high now for my swing changes. More positive AOA now.

How would the UB compare? XC sounds interesting as I liked WB shaft years ago. Been fit into the TPW twice too. Should I give the UB or XC for my next trial?

UB was more anti-left for me than the HD or TP.  It's actually mid-low for me very much like the GP and XC but has the best feel out of the bunch.  The difference between the UB and XC is that XC has very stiff mid whereas the UB is soft.  Still, the UB doesn't feel really loose and soft in the middle like the DI did for me.  It's probably the most stable tip stiff, soft mid shaft I've ever had.  Are you hard loader/aggressive transition player or smooth?  The XC seems to hold up a little better for the aggressive player IMO.  I know it's one of my favorite GD shafts besides the UB.

Thanks man. I have an aggressive transition. Maybe the XC would be worth a try? Tired of the TP going left and high. Of course, it’s a driver head and swing issue, but anything can help.

XC is definitely worth a try.  The trade off is that it's not as smooth as the UB.

Shaft Review – Graphite Design Tour AD VR

Shaft Review – Graphite Design Tour AD VR

While I’m not what you’d call a fan of dropping temperatures and falling leaves, I do appreciate that autumn almost invariably brings with it the release of a new Tour AD model from Graphite Design. For the 2019 season, it’s the Tour AD VR.

Cosmetically, the VR (which, FYI, stands for Vanquish All Rivals ) is everything you’d expect from the AD line. Colors may change, but Graphite Design maintains a consistent look. You know it’s an AD because it looks like an AD. While that means the graphics might not be as bold or ostentatious as others, it’s a dependable no-nonsense approach that seldom results in a color scheme anyone would consider an eyesore.

Now, I imagine you might be looking at the AD VR’s blue colorway and thinking that the AD VR must be a replacement for the popular AD BB. Not so fast, cowboy. While some of us would be totally onboard with that, Graphite Design describes the Tour AD VR as a slightly tweaked Tour AD IZ (which is a slightly tweaked Tour AD DI). Fans of the IZ (or the DI for that matter) shouldn’t freak out. Nothing is moving out of the lineup to make way for the new model. That’s not how Graphite Design does things. It can take fitters a couple of years to get comfortable with a shaft, so the company doesn’t find much value in yanking trusted models to make room for something unfamiliar. The Tour AD DI, for example, turns 9 this year, but it’s still in the lineup because the performance still holds up and it still moves the needle with golfers and fitters.

tour ad hd shaft review

AD VR Performance Characteristics

Given how Graphite Design describes the VR, it’s reasonable to base our comparisons around the Tour AD IZ. The company says the AD VR has the softer tip of the two, but it’s important to remember that butt, middle and tip section measurements can vary tremendously based on how each section of shaft is defined by those taking the measurements. Using the  Cool Clubs S3  data as our standard, you’ll see, the AD VR comes out slightly firmer in the butt and tip sections with a mid-section that’s just a bit softer. According to Graphite Design, the kickpoint on the AD VR has been pulled up slightly to promote lower launch. The collection of changes makes for a shaft that the manufacturer describes as offering mid/high launch and low spin.

tour ad hd shaft review

As with last season’s IZ and 2017’s AD TP, the AD VR features FTT (Fast Taper Technology), which, according to Graphite Design, “incorporates a faster taper rate from the grip to the lower mid-section of the shaft, providing the overall feeling of greater clubhead control at impact and an increase in clubhead speed.” The AD TP (first to incorporate FTT) was included in low spin shaft test, and our results suggest FTT may contribute to tighter dispersion.

tour ad hd shaft review

While I would actively encourage you not to obsess over materials, I’m obliged to tell you that the AD VR, like other recent AD models, is made primarily from 50T carbon fiber and uses T1100G to strategically stiffen sections of the shaft without adding weight.

For our CoolClubs S3-powered comparisons we’ve chosen the to show the VR alongside the IZ. We thought that made the most sense given how Graphite Design describes the VR. It’s also worth noting that in July of this year, IZ was the best-selling shaft in the Graphite Design lineup. It’s the first time in the better part of a decade that anything in the lineup has outsold the iconic AD DI.

GRAPHITE DESIGN TOUR AD VR: THE COOL CLUBS S3 COMPARISON

s3full

“S3 Technologies utilizes the most advanced shaft testing technology in the industry. The Shaft Simulation System (S3), which was developed in 2013, is a fully-automated, all-in-one shaft profiling machine. In a matter of minutes, the S3 determines the following shaft specs: (Straightness, Consistency Profile, EI Profile, CPM Analysis and Torque. While some of the aforementioned specs can be obtained from shaft manufacturers, a lack of industry standards prevents that data from being used for accurate apples-to-apples comparisons. S3 Technologies ,  solves this challenge by testing all of our production in-house using the S3. This gives S3 Technologies a unique and in-depth understanding of the quality and performance of the industry’s shafts.”

Not only does S3 give us  standardized quantitative information  about the shaft(s) being reviewed, the data we share will provide you with a much better sense of how those shafts compare with similarly spec’d offerings on the market today.

TOUR AD VR LAUNCH CHARACTERISTICS

tour ad hd shaft review

Cool Clubs S3  classifies the 65g stiff AD VR as a mid launch shaft. By comparison, the AD IZ is classified as a mid-high launch shaft. In this comparison, Neutral (the Mid reference point used to classify launch parameters) and the database average for similarly spec’d shafts are almost identical. The takeaway is that the AD VR can be expected to launch a bit higher than similar shafts, but a bit lower than the Tour AD IZ.

tour ad hd shaft review

Tour AD VR ZONE EI

The following chart compares the stiffness of the Tour AD VR to the Tour AD IZ in the butt, mid, and tip sections. Measurements are based on the stiff flex versions of the 65-gram model.

tour ad hd shaft review

Because each shaft manufacturer defines zones a bit differently, it’s not unusual for S3 measurements to deviate from OEM descriptions. In this case, we see a stiffer handle section relative to the AD IZ with a slightly softer mid-section and a slightly firmer tip. The frequency measurements (not shown) are effectively equivalent.

This is the first time we’ve included a compared EI profile in a shaft review, but in this case, I believe it’s especially helpful for visualizing the differences between the two models discussed. Note that the curve is depicted from the butt (left side of chart) to the tip (right side of the chart).

tour ad hd shaft review

The stiffer handle section of the AD VR is readily apparent, as is the slightly softer mid section and the slightly firmer tip.

The profile shape is indicative of a good portion of the of the Tour AD lineup. Individual models are more similar than different and most share the sloping profile depicted. The shape isn’t dissimilar to what you’d find in most Speeder models or the Diamana Blue. For what it’s worth, it’s a shape that generally works well for me.

What you should glean from all of this is that it is subtle differences in zone stiffness, balance point, and torque that truly differentiate the individual AD models.

tour ad hd shaft review

AD VR BALANCE POINT

The following chart compares the balance point of the AD VR to the AD IZ. Measurements are based on the stiff flex versions of the 65-gram model.

tour ad hd shaft review

The S3 data suggests that the balance point of the AD VR is the same as the AD IZ. Both the VR and the IZ have balance points that are slightly higher than the S3 Database average for shafts with similar specifications.

As you may recall from our  Golf Geeks Story on Shaft Performance , a higher balance point allows for more head weight without drastically impacting the swingweight. For golfers seeking more distance (admittedly often at the expense of accuracy), this allows drivers to be built to longer playing lengths.

tour ad hd shaft review

Swing Speed Recommendations

The chart below provides swing speed recommendations for the entire Tour AD VR lineup.

tour ad hd shaft review

Note that these recommendations are based on the full range of  Cool Clubs ‘ building and fitting capabilities, including factors such as tipping and build length which can cause a shaft to play either softer or stiffer.

To simplify things a bit, you may wish to narrow these ranges. The sweet spot from a fitting perspective begins 25% from the slow end of the range. As a general rule, players with faster tempos, particularly in transition may fit into a stiff flex, while smoother swingers often fit into a softer flex.

tour ad hd shaft review

From the Cool Clubs Fitting Team

For this discussion, we chose the VR-6 Stiff flex which is in the middle of the weight range for this shaft and compared it to Graphite Design’s IZ-6 S. The shafts both weigh 64.9 grams.

Consistent with their other shafts, the VR is made with high performance, high quality 50t carbon-fiber materials. They have continued to use their Fast Taper Technology, which differs from typical shafts in the amount of taper from the butt to the middle of the shaft. The iconic Graphite Design stripes are still readily visible and the rest of the shaft is very good looking in a deeper blue color with silver accents.

tour ad hd shaft review

The GD Tour AD VR is designed as a mid-launch and mid to lower spin shaft. Available in a broad range of weights from 40 to 80 grams and flexes from R2 to X this shaft will fit a variety of players. The lighter VR-4 will launch the ball higher and spin more than the mid to heavier weight models.

When comparing launch the VR-6 is slightly lower than the IZ-6 but both are a little higher than the average launch of shafts in our database. Of these two shafts the VR-6 is stiffer than the IZ-6 in both the butt section and tip section. The shafts mirror each other through the mid section. The balance point is identical while the frequency is just slightly stiffer in the VR-6.

If you like the IZ-6 but want slightly lower launch and spin then the VR-6 is for you.

The older Adams shaft KBS Tour 90 Is that the same shaft as the Wilson Staff C300 Irons?

After all this tech data. The two write in critic comments made the most common sense

To quote the straight talking Tom Wishon, there are only two types of shafts….. those that fit you and those that don’t. It is possible that the really expensive, newest, state of the art, ultra high tech material shaft fits you perfectly. But it is also possible that the $30, 10 year old technology shaft fits you perfectly.

I went way down the shaft rabbit hole last year. Tried tons of new shafts on the range and in play. They can be a lot of fun to play with, but I never found anything that could beat a 5+ year old whiteboard. What are we really getting from all this new tech? Didn’t seem like much to me.

JohnnyBgood

Pretty much EXACT same thing for me. After a few higher end shafts i ended up right where i started off. Old UST Proforce 65 Golds in 3 and 5 woods for the foreseeable future… $30/piece and didnt notice enough difference between the $200 shafts and these.

Graphite Design Tour AD UB Shaft Review

Will this upgrade go up and beyond your current gamer.

Tyler Fitzel Professional club fitter and author at Independent Golf Reviews

tour ad hd shaft review

I used the Graphite Design Tour AD UB Shaft for 8 rounds of golf in AZ this winter. I’ve also been able to hit it indoors on the work simulators .

This is the definitive Graphite Design Tour AD UB Shaft Review for 2022.

IMG_7174

New in 22’ Graphite Design is ready to take your golf game Up and Beyond with the latest addition to the Tour AD line-up, the UB. Well known for high performance and premium golf shafts, the engineers at Graphite Design are continuously seeking to produce the optimal shaft for your game. With 5 weight options and 6 flex designations, the Tour AD UB will have a shaft to go Up and Beyond your current gamer.

tour ad hd shaft review

Looks- Designed and manufactured at the Graphite Design Japan factory headquarters, the new Tour AD UB has a very eye appealing color pop. The distinctive bands of a Graphite Design Tour AD shaft are black and silver set in a metallic blue which fades to all silver near the tip of the shaft. The silver color on the bottom of the shaft makes any driver head color blend nicely with the numerous color schemes we see in the game.

Feel- The new Tour AD UB has the feel you have come to love from a Tour AD shaft. Feel is always subject to the person making the comments, but this shaft is yet again an instant winner for the response it has when loading and unloading during the swing. The profile is described as Medium+ Butt Section – Medium+ Mid Section and Stiff+ Tip Section. I like how all the shafts for Graphite Design can be compared by Stiffness using the 3 zones of the shaft. Before you even try the shaft you can identify the key elements you need for the best fit. The Tour AD UB has a slightly more stable feel at impact for me than the Tour AD HD did. It was like I could feel more of the contact when the club face met the ball.

tour ad hd shaft review

Performance- I was able to compare the last three Tour AD shaft models side by side and it helps to understand the performance differences I’ve been seeing over a three year period of time. The new Tour AD UB has been the best fit for my game for several reasons. First, I feel a more solid contact in the clubface with the ball. The added ball speed helps to create more distance without having to swing off-balanced. Second, my optimal launch and spin numbers for an attack angle up 4* is 15.0-16.0 degrees and 2300 rpm. Generally speaking of course, these averages should yield a 250-275 yard drive. Third, I have found more fairways at a greater distance. It goes without saying Accuracy and Distance is the ultimate combination. Tracking my stats over the past 3 years, my average number of fairways hit has increased from 44% to 55%.

tour ad hd shaft review

Technology- The new Graphite Design Tour AD UB utilizes the same TORAYCA ® T1100G carbon-fiber pre-preg with NANOALLOY ® technology as the past few Tour AD shafts. This provides the tip section of the shaft with additional shaft stability, exceptional feel and precise ball control.

The Tour AD UB also utilizes TORAYCA ® M40X carbon-fiber pre-preg in the Mid to Tip section of the shaft as did the HD and XC models before it. This strength in transition from Mid to Tip helps create a Mid Launch and Low/Mid Spin characteristics, as well as give the shaft rotational stability for added consistency in shot dispersion.

Along with TORAYCA ® and NANOALLOY ® is Graphite Design’s proprietary M aterial S tiffness I ntegration ( MSI ) design philosophy and technology. The way each layer of material is used helps create the unmistakable feel and performance in all Graphite Design shafts. This attention to detail in production is what makes Graphite Design one of the industry leaders.

For decades Graphite Design has released an award worthy shaft and 2022 is no exception. The 2022 Tour AD UB shaft is a Mid Launch with Low/Mid Spin and is a great fit for someone needing a penetrating ball flight with a slightly higher spin rate. Many factors go into finding the optimal shaft for your swing, find an Authorized Dealer to help you get the right Tour AD shaft in your club.

With 33 years of Tour proven A ccuracy & D istance… Maybe it’s time for you to experience the difference a premium, Graphite Design shaft can make!

ℹ️  About: Well known for high performance and premium golf shafts, the engineers at Graphite Design are continuously seeking to produce the optimal shaft for your game. The Tour AD UB will have a shaft to go Up and Beyond your current gamer.

✅  Pros: Amazing Feel, Excellent Launch, Longer, Wider audience, Looks great

⛔  Cons: $500

⛳  Verdict: If you want to uprade your stock shaft, Graphite Design is one of the best options, and the UB is Up and Beyond.

Graphite Design Tour AD VF Shaft Review

Lucky for us, Graphite Design has released a second shaft in 2023 – the Tour AD VF “Victory Force.” This sleek black and red shat fits the low spin, low-to-mid launch profile and one of the stiffest tip sections out of all their offerings.  As you come to expect, the AD VF offers the best of modern materials in Japanese golf design and manufacturing.

Looks 5

It’s been a few iterations since we’ve seen the boldest and most vibrant Graphite Design graphics show up! In previous years, we had the iconic and vibrant Tour AD DI, older classics like the highlighter yellow AD MT, or the shimmering turquoise AD UB . Like this year’s other earlier release in the AD CQ , this shaft comes in with a glossy black base color. The new Tour AD VF is accented by a deep red…

My opinion is that it’s traditional and classy, and very understated. A bit “stealthy” if you get what I’m saying. Depending on your level of nerdiness, you can even think of it as a Sith Lightsaber too!

Graphite Tour AD VF 3

How Does it Feel?

The Graphite Design Tour AD VF has, in my opinion, one of the more unique feels of any shaft that the company offers. This company has attained a reputation for smoothness which you’ll often hear people comment on regardless of which shaft you choose from the family. You never hear “boardy” or “unstable” or “loose” when talking about Graphite Design.

For the AD VF, the company has created a profile that moves from firm to very stiff (their terms) as you move from the handle to the tip. They’re using TORAYCA M40X and T1100G carbon fiber materials to create those sensations in this shaft. And yeah, you can feel that. For me, the AD VF has the expected smooth feel, but a much more satisfying kick at the end. I think back a few years to the AD XC which also started softer at the handle and gradually stiffened to the tip. Having it just a bit tighter in the hands really makes this one fun.

Graphite Tour AD VF 1

On-Course Performance

I got a chance to spend two weeks testing my current favorite, the Graphite Design AD CQ, alongside the AD VF at my home away from home, Marquette Golf Club’s Greywalls course. It’s a demanding driving course and while length is not imperative, hitting the right shot shapes is a must. I tried to hit bombs, tried to flight it, and quite possibly mixed in a few absolute stinkers in there too.

While Graphite Design slots this in as a low to mid flight shaft, I felt my stock swing here kept it closer to mid than low. Good shots started low, but it seemed to keep rising to nearly the same peaks and windows as the AD CQ (which is a much higher launching profile on paper). Visually, I did not think this spun as much as the AD CQ either, but it didn’t cruise through the wind like the lowest of the low spin shafts I’ve hit. I’m not a huge swing speed player, so the truly fast players may experience it slightly different.

The adjustment period I had with this one was getting rid of the big slice. That very stiff tip sometimes makes it hard to close the club face, but that’s more of my issue! I’d even say that it helps keep that left side out of play for me. I felt like I could give the AD VF everything I had. It held up well to both aggressive swings, but I could also finesse it as needed. I found I could flight it low pretty easily, which is nice… and also something I cannot do with the AD CQ!

Can Bill test this shaft out since you mentioned it maybe a bit too stiff tip for you? Itll be nice to have a perspective from the higher speed player that is accustomed to this profile

' src=

I don’t think my perspective would really change anything. The point Jon makes is valid in that the tip section is stiffer and would translate into a different player’s swing. That experience, in my opinion, makes it an applicable “real world” review.

Plus, there’s not enough time in the day for us to double up the reviews 🙂

' src=

I’ll send it over to Ol Bill’s Clubratory for an adapter change and give him a few whacks if he likes! He does bring a bit more heat than me (probably because as old washed up hockey players he was a forward and I was a mere goalie) but we’ve both gotten good use out of shafts with wildly different profiles along the way.

However, the cool thing about Graphite Design is that they’re one of the most fine-tuneable golf shafts out there. This one was a 5x, but I’ve played 6x and 7x in Graphite Design shafts before and gotten great results. The tip stiffness is for sure a main feature of the AD VF. It tested well for me, but on game day, I’ve typically been going with the AD CQ or the AD VR… again two wildly different profiles. Pays off to test em all!
