As I’ve mentioned above, exploring La Union can be a relaxing break from the busy city life in Manila. This is where the true beauty of the Philippines really starts to shine.

Whether you want to surf, hike, relax or step up your tanning game, the options are endless in la Union.

But that also means deciding on what to do and when to do it can turn into a real struggle. With so many awesome attractions, you might find yourself overwhelmed when trying to fit it all in. But don’t worry, this is where I’ll step in.

08.30 am – La Union Grape Farms

Grapes are good, wine is better, and visiting vineyards is the best. Checking out the various La Union grape farms is the proper way to truly understand how this worldwide drink is crafted. Thanks to social media these sleepy farms are now a fun attraction for people to come visit.

Grape growing has been around for decades in this area of La Union, there are a handful of vineyards that you to go to and explore. Wandering around, sampling these tasty little berries makes for a pretty fun day outdoors. At each vineyard you are able to pick your own grapes, if they are in season. Don’t forget to sample the finished product!

10.00 am – Pindangan Ruins

Next up, you’ll be visiting the famous Pindangan Ruins. The church was built as a symbol of peace between two old villages, San Vicente de Balanac – a coastal village and San Guillermo de Dalangdang – an inland mountain village. The union was created for their mutual need for protection from pirates and headhunters!

Although mostly destroyed due to an earthquake, Pindangan church is still a brilliant display of architectural design. The remaining structure is now overgrown with wildflowers and moss but yet still stands as a reminder to the people here of how it brought two villages together creating peace and safety.

Insider Tips: The ruins are lavish with ghost stories galore, so be prepared for a folklore feel and goosebumps! The word Pindangan is an Ilocano term for “a place where meat is sun-dried with salt for preservation.”

11.00 am – Christ the Redeemer Statue

Although not as big as the one in Brazil this Christ the Redeemer statue is a nice little photo stop. Found in various places around the world this iconic statue is always a joy to come across when traveling.

Only a short walk up the hill at the statue you are graced with a nice view of San Fernando La Union.

It’s also a great spot to sit down with a snack and enjoy the view. Your feet might need a bit of a break and the statue is the perfect place to chill and recharge before heading to the next attraction.

12.30 pm – Ma-Cho Temple

Continuing the first day in La Union with this incredibly cultural and significant Taoist Temple! The Ma-Cho temple stands as a living tribute to the Confluence of the Filipino-Chinese Culture.

The temple was named after a legendary Chinese deity named Ma-Cho, she was born in 960 AD during the Sung Dynasty. It is said that she never cried a single tear during her entire first month of life, that is how she earned the name “Mo”, which translates to“keeping silent”.

Afterwards, head over to Halo Halo de Iloko for some delicious traditional desserts for lunch, which is only a 10 minute walk away.

Ma-Cho was very intelligent, said to have a photographic memory, and blessed with healing powers! At the age of ten, she became a monk. An unusual story indeed for a little girl! She was able to accurately predict the tides and weather conditions of the sea, thus dubbed the ‘goddess of the sea’

This temple is different from all the other temples you will find in Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan, as it is the biggest temple in the world outside of China! The Ma Cho Temple believed to be one of the very few Chinese temples that have been built with five archways.

An entire hectare of sheer beauty and rich history all wrapped up in a gorgeous Taoist temple!

Getting there – It’s a 4min drive from the statue

1.30 pm – Thunderbird Resort

Duck away from the backpacking life for a few hours by visiting the Thunderbird Resort and Casino . Here you can experience a taste of Greece without changing timezones… This mini resort-city is located on top of a 100-foot cliff and with its free tour you can get some great photos of one of the best resorts in the Philippines.

This 5 star resort has been open for a handful of years and covers a stretch of 65 hectares! Pretend you are in Santorini for the afternoon and if you do the day pass make sure to live it up like you officially are there.

Costs – Daily Pass for 1,500 PHP
How long should I stay here? 3-4 hours

5.00 pm – Poro Point

One of the best places for sunset, Paro Point is a beautiful place to spend a long afternoon admiring the scenery. Enjoy the lush landscape as you walk alongside cliffs that drop into the West Philippine Sea.

Keep your eyes peeled for the various birds that call the cliffs of Paro Point home. This rugged limestone dates back to one of the ice ages! The Filipino government even set up an economic zone here on Paro Point to keep this area pristine.

The Poro Point Lighthouse was originally built in 1905 during the American occupation and although it does not have a traditional lantern to warn sailors the lighthouse has a reflective glass plane 107 feet wide that helps illuminate two electrical flashes every 10 seconds for warnings.

Insider Tip: Unfortunately, you will have to admire the lighthouse from afar. Being an active military base it is not open to tourists.

On Day 2 of my La Union itinerary, you can expect adventures, adrenalin and stunning nature. You’ll be visiting some beautiful waterfalls and get the chance to hike on hidden paths. Make sure your swimming gear has all dried up because you’ll be hitting the beach as well!

08.30 am – Tangadan Falls in San Gabriel

Twice as wide as they are tall the Tangadan Falls makes for an open expanse of water activities! The pool is deep at the bottom of the falls making it perfect for cliff jumping. Climb to the top, enjoy the view and steady your nerves!

A short 20-minute Jeep or tricycle ride from town to the Tangadan Falls near San Gabriel, is a great start to your adventurous day. Once being dropped off at the trailhead you languidly hike for a short bit of time following the river upstream. If you skip the Jeep ride you are able to hike for about an hour following the Brgy. Duplas trail.

11.00 am – Bulalakaw Falls

Getting to the falls is some of the best fun! It’s only a short 20-30 minute hike to Bulalakaw Falls but the views are something else. Rock cliffs, fields and river valleys will have you in awe of nature and make this trek memorable.

Enjoy the cool, clear water, and lack of crowds as you swim around lost in nature! There are a few waterfalls in this area if you want to keep exploring. The drive to Bagulin, where Bulalakaw Falls are located is so much fun as well. You have definitely left the city and the beach behind.

1.00 pm – La Union Botanical and Zoological Garden

Dive into a wildlife paradise as you explore this nature park complete with many themed, and expertly landscaped garden environments, complete with orchids and an aviary bustling with native animals!

This majestic garden is the center for laboratory research in Northern Luzon and was inaugurated in March 1996.

All of the beautiful plants are labeled with their local and scientific names, along with their origin. The plants arranged in the style of a country garden.

Getting there – 16min drive from San Fernando City

3.00 pm – Bauang Beach

Everyone gathers at Bauang Beach to enjoy the smooth waves, quiet atmosphere and remarkably beautiful sunsets!

Pack your lilo, your beach towels and your sun hat for an amazing day of soaking up some vitamin Sea on the prominent coastline of La Union. This beach is perfect for a lazy swim and wonderful if you’re looking for calm rolling waves.

Whether you want to spend the day here or just a few hours, it is well worth the visit.

Getting there – 25min drive from the previous spot

If you’re lucky enough to have more than two days in La Union, check out my itinerary for day 3! It’s just as action packed as the second one, but with a bit more culture. You’ll end the day on the most famous beach in the Philippines, so be sure to pack your towel again!

07.00 am – Balay Anito Falls

The last day of my itinerary will start bright and early with another waterfall adventure. Make sure to bring a pair of solid shoes as well so you can hit some hidden tracks.

One-of-a-kind trekking and swimming await you at the Balay Anito Falls, one of the most mysterious and astoundingly beautiful tropical paradises that the La Union offers. This pristine basin is full of crystal waters cascade down into a limestone cave. And the whole area is surrounded by a dense rainforest that you wander through to reach the pools.

Getting there – 1 hour drive from San Fernando La Union

10.00 am – St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish

Stylized in design, well known and respected stopping by this church is a great step into Catholic history of the Philippines.

St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish in La Union is more than just a church it is also home to the sacred shrine of Our Lady of Namacpacan, the Virgin Mary. Over the years a few miracles have been attributed to this 6 feet tall image of the Virgin Mary, which has now been canonized by the church.

Getting there – 40min drive from the previous spot

10.45 am – Baluarte Watch Tower

Otherwise known as, the ‘leaning tower of Luna’, the Baluarte Watch Tower is a significant tourist attraction as well as one of the most important historical La Union landmarks. The overall setting may be quite unexciting, as it is a relatively small structure set on the coastline, but when you understand the history and meaning behind the structure, it will come alive with magic!

The Luna watch tower denotes the town’s great past and was originally built during the pre-Spanish era as a strategic lookout point for impending attack from aggressive pirates or other dangerous attackers. Just like a guardian angel looking over its community and the lives of the people, this ancient structure has served its purpose very well countless times in Luna’s past.

Now the watchtower stands in disrepair. Today, the mighty landmark sits on the famous pebble beach of Luna, and although it has been damaged by weather and time, it is still a sight to behold!

12.00 pm – 3D Art Gallery and Bahay Na Bato Souvenir Shop

An essential part of any La Union Trip Itinerary is a visit to the arts.

The 3-D gallery and souvenir shop show off all the incredible locally made artworks and sculptures. Most which are created from rocks and wood, designed into creative shapes.

The souvenir shop also offers some snacks and refreshments, which is the perfect recharge before heading to the next stop. The Gallery is right next to the sea, so you can spend a little while enjoying your food while admiring the crystal blue water.

1.30 pm – Occalong Falls

There are so many waterfalls around La Union, that I had to include another one in the itinerary! Visiting here is a chance to refresh yourself after a morning of adventuring by dipping into the cool waters of the Occalong Falls. It’s a beautiful spot in nature with not many tourists. There are plenty of options to climb, explore and relax. Let out your inner animal as you venture through the jungle and find yourself in the awe-inspiring and stunning environment of the Occalong Falls.

This is a perfect place to lay back and enjoy the day, soaking in the vitamin D and breathing in that fresh tropical air during your trip to La Union. You can visit the Occalong Falls on your own or get a guide that will show you some hidden paths to explore.

Getting there – It’s a 20min Jeep ride

3.00pm until late – San Juan Beach

As the last stop on my 3 Day La Union Itinerary, I offer you the opportunity to kick your feet up, or go for a short swim and enjoy a nice beachy sunset.

San Juan Beach is pretty busy during the day, but it normally gets a bit quieter once the strong afternoon sun is gone. Grab a drink and a beanbag and enjoy one of the most beautiful sunsets while watching surfers rip one wave after another. It’s the perfect way to end an adventurous La Union Day 3.

If you love beaches, you will also love the nearby Urbiztondo beach, which is fantastic for surfing and chilling out in beach bars until sunset.

Getting there – 13min drive from San Fernado La Union

Stash your cash safely with this money belt. It will keep your valuables safely concealed, no matter where you go.

It looks exactly like a normal belt except for a SECRET interior pocket perfectly designed to hide a wad of cash, a passport photocopy or anything else you may wish to hide. Never get caught with your pants down again! (Unless you want to…)

The weather in La Union is some of the best in the Philippines. Rain season still happens but it is not as intense as other areas. La Union has more of an arid climate meaning the forecast is sunshine with a chance of more sunshine.

There’s really no “bad time” to visit la Union, as the weather is one of the most stable ones in all of Asia. However, there are some months that differ, especially looking at the humidity levels.

If you’re after the hotter months, March until July will be the perfect time to visit. If you want to wear a pair of nice jeans every once in a while, you should opt for December to February, as these are the least humid months – but it’s still quite hot.

December and January are the peak months for surfers and tourists, which also means inflated prices and booked out accommodations.

La Union bus terminals are scattered everywhere, and it is the easiest and most direct way to get from point A to Point B in this fascinating region. La Union bus fare is super reasonable, so you won’t be paying out your ears if you’re backpacking the Philippines ! The buses are always on time and provide a smooth ride, you can also expect to make a few friends along the way to where you’re going!

You can hire out a car or bike to get around, which is relatively inexpensive and allows you to work on your own time. Cruising the streets is a fun activity in itself, as La Union’s towns are all full of grand places and wonderful architecture.

Taxis can also be found, so you can also hire out a driver for the day or just for one trip. The locals are friendly and the chances are you will learn something new from your driver about La Union. If you’re wanting to experience a more cultural mode of transportation than the habal-habal (motorized taxi ) are the best way to indulge.

Walking around is a lovely way to see the cities and enjoy the laid back atmosphere of La Union, provided you aren’t going to walk too far. The beach is more often than not only a few steps away!

The Philippines is less conservative than its neighbouring countries of Malaysia, Indonesia and Taiwan when it comes to clothing. As tourism grows and island hopping and beach parties continue, the dress code is turning more towards the western style you might be used to. However, venturing into the less tourist and rural areas it is best to dress more conservatively.

Avoid wearing all black; it’s considered a mourning colour, but black in the heat of the sun wouldn’t be my first choice anyway… If you are going to visit churches and temples make sure your shoulders, cleavage and knees are covered, otherwise, your packing for the Philippines should definitely be light and breathable.

La Union is generally considered very safe for tourists. If you take a cab, check the driver’s ID to make sure they are legit. If you drink alcohol, try to behave yourself as local culture does not look kindly on boisterousness.

I’d love to go right now but I need to know the requirements to be allowed entry to La Union coming from Metro Manila: clearances from local governments (mine and there), health declaration, RT-PCR tests, quarantine, etc. Do you have the most current info available? If I have a driver drop me off only (he’s not staying w me) and turn around, will the driver be allowed to enter the province as well and same as pick-up after a 5-day (approx) stay? 11. La Union grape farms & fruit picking

Grapes farm in Bauang, La Union, Philippines

Before leaving La Union, drop by the grape farms in Bauang. You can go grape-picking here and bring the fresh harvest as pasalubong. Grape farms in the country are a surprising discovery for most Filipinos because we have a notion that this fruit can only grow in cold weather. There are numerous grape farms in town and many of them are open to the public.

The grape farms Bauang in are located in Brgy. Urayong. Bauang is just one town away from San Fernando. If you are coming from Manila, it will be the last town you will pass by before reaching San Fernando. From San Fernando or San Juan, you can a jeepney bound for Agoo. You can also ride any southbound bus to Manila, Pangasinan, or Baguio. Drop off at the intersection to the grape farms in Brgy. Urayong. The fare should cost around PHP20 to PHP30. From the intersection, the grape farms are less than 1 kilometer away, towards the coast.

The one we had visited was Gapuz Grape Farm. They did not charge any entrance fee, but they may ask for a PHP20 fee if you plan on taking photos. Grape-picking cost is PHP250 per kilogram.

Contact the farms prior to your visit because grape-picking is only available during selected times of the year.

The word “damili” translates to “the art of pottery making” in the Ilocano language and is the root word for the name Red Clay Pagdamilian, a popular pottery studio and shop that showcases local talent with beautiful pottery and other souvenir items for sale. But more than the pottery on display, what makes it one of the famous tourist attractions in La Union is that for a small fee, anyone can handle the clay and mold their very own one-of-a-kind souvenir clay item from scratch.

The hands-on pottery lesson for visitors is such a big hit that it became the focal point of the shop, with local and foreign visitors flocking to the studio to create their own vessels and other pottery designs. It became a venue for visitors to release their artistic talents or a a creative outlet for participants to express their personality. The clay can be molded into useful shapes with a practical purposes or into decorative items to be displayed around the house such as clay pots, food storage, and mugs, to name a few.

The ruins is one of the top places to visit in La Union and refers to the remains of a church built by Augustinian priests in the late 1700s during the Spanish colonial period, while Pindangan, an Ilocano word which translates to “a place for drying fish,” is where local inhabitants used to lay out salted fish to dry out in the sun, a process of preserving and curing meat that the town of San Fernando is known for to this day.

What remains of the church are formidable walls and buttresses. During the early years of Spanish era, the church was vulnerable to pirate attacks and foreign invasion because of its location near the coastal areas by the sea, and the clergy decided to move the town’s place of worship to another location. The Pindangan church was abandoned and left to decay until it an earthquake that took place sometime in the 1800’s destroyed it and it has remained to its present state.

The Pindangan Ruins are currently looked after by the Carmelite Sisters, who live in a monastery within the property. The ruins are preserved in its original condition or kept in a state of “arrested decay”. This historical structure stands near Camp Oscar Florendo, just 500 M from the National Highway.

When tourists visit La Union, one of the first things that typically comes to mind is the beach. Most visitors associate the town with surfing, swimming under the heat of the sun, and enjoying the tropical weather. But what most travelers don't know is that La Union is also a top farm tour destination in the Philippines . One of the top farms in La Union is the Gapuz Grapes Farm.

Grape farm owner Danny Gapuz started planting 100 cuttings of a type of variety called White Malaga and Black Ribier back in the 1980s in his hometown in Barangay Urayong, Bauang, La Union. Although the farm has been around since that time, it wasn’t until 2011 that tourists started to know about it after the Gapuz Farm Facebook page was set up.

Visitors intrigued by the novelty of picking grapes under the heat of the tropical sun started posting their experiences over social media. You could do that in the Philippines without having to fly to Napa Valley or other places abroad. The farm offers other fun experiences like “The Porch Life” where a group of 10 people could share a meal on a banana leaf called “boodle fight”, while grape picking season is at its peak from March to May.

9. Kamay Na Bato Open Art Gallery

“Kamay na Bato”, a Filipino phrase that translates to “house of stone”, is an art gallery that features various art sculptures carved from stone. This tourist attraction is located along Balaoan Road in Luna, La Union, right next to a pebble beach.

The gallery is owned and curated by Mr. Bong Kim, a Korean national with a fine arts degree. He specialized in sculpture while studying, so its no surprise that many of his own artwork can be found at the gallery. Mr. Kim moved to Luna a few years ago and lived nearby with his wife and children.

The art gallery includes murals, large stone carvings, mounted stone busts, and paintings of uniquely Filipino images such as seascapes, smiling faces, and exotic animals, and colorful fish. There’s even a painting of Manny Pacquiao near the entrance! Aside from stone carvings, wooden sculptures are also abundant and spread out throughout the property, while a function hall can be rented for a fee.

There is also a well-lit area that displays more paintings, murals, sculptures, 3D artworks, and a shop selling souvenir items. Don’t forget to bring your camera and take lots of pictures of the unique artwork around you.

Adrenaline junkies looking for thrilling experience in La Union will find it at PUGAD Pugo Resort, an adventure park that offers fun activities with a zip lines, giant swing, rappelling, paintball, wall climbing, ATV, and 10 swimming pools. It also has 94 cottages for rent, and facilities for overnight accommodations, along with air-conditioning, cable TV with hot and cold bath.

The resort also has a mini zoo with exotic animals such as various snake breeds, bearcats, exotic birds, and a tiger named Nicole. It has 2 zip lines: the Superman zipline that measures 450 from end to end, and a shorter one that is 250 meters in length that takes 10 seconds to ride. Both provide a great view of the resort and of the surrounding landscape.

Ruins of the Baluarte Watch Tower at Luna, La Union

The 400 year old Baluarte Watch Tower was built during the Spanish colonial period and served as a place to warn residents against pirates and foreign looters along the coastal town. The 5.6-meter high round-shaped tower provided strategic a vantage point as a lookout for the Spanish guards to prepare against possible attacks from Japanese, Moro and Chinese invaders during the Spanish era. During WW2, it was also used as a communication tower.

It stands on an embankment along the scenic Pebble Beach in Barangay Victoria, a beach filled with multi-colored stones of various shapes and sizes. This historical landmark has been visited by countless tourists throughout the years and was declared a National Cultural Treasure by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines in 2014.

The massive fortress was split in half for many years until it finally collapsed in 2015, damaged by the strong winds of typhoon Lando. Restoration efforts started in 2016 and was finally completed in 2017, where it can now be seen with its walls fused together with a combination of the centuries-old adobe-coral stones with newer, lighter-colored red bricks.

This Roman Catholic church is also known as The Santa Catalina de Alejandria Church and is located in Luna, La Union. Established in 1690, the church is placed under the advocacy of Saint Catherine of Alexandria and is the site where the wooden image of the Blessed Virgin Mary can be found.

The venerated image is formally called Our Lady of Namacpacan, locally known as “Apo Baket”. Several miracles are attributed to the image, and it attracts many devotees and Marian followers. A patroness of Ilocano travellers, the image stands at 6 feet and 4 inches, making it the tallest known statue of its kind in the country.

The structure is one of the Philippines’ National Cultural Treasures. The Namacpacan Church is an Earthquake Baroque church, a style of architecture found the the country as a way to combat the destructive forces of earthquakes that many Luzon structures suffered during the 17th to 18th century, within the Spanish colonial period. The church features buttresses and thick walls, a ceremonial archway, rounded pediments, and a white facade typical of Baroque architecture.

Immuki island is made up of a series of smalls lagoons filled with pools of water held together by corals. It has three crystal clear pools that are perfect to dip into on a hot, sunny day. Located in Barangay Paraoir in Balaoan, La Union, it is the type of place for visitors looking for a quiet, natural environment that is away from the usual crowd of noisy tourists.

Getting there is an adventure in itself: from San Juan, La Union, you will make your way to McArthur Highway and then make a turn toward Bacnotan town via the Bacnotan-Luna-Balaoan Road and head toward Balaoan town. Follow the coastal road toward Luna until reaching Barangay Paraoir.

Before entering Immuki island, you will need to register at the barangay hall near the Paraoir National Highschool and then follow a paved pathway toward a beach. From the beach, you will wade through roughly 250 meters distance to reach one of the lagoons in Immuki island. Walking past the shallow water is possible in the low tide - otherwise, a raft may be rented nearby.

Bring aqua slippers to protect your feet from sharp corals, and enjoy the turquoise pools with water so clear you don’t need a snorkeling mask to see the reef fish. This hidden paradise won’t stay hidden for long as it is already attracting many local tourists.

The Ma-Cho Temple’s architecture cuts a striking image across the La Union skyline. Nestled on top of a hill at an elevation of 70 above sea level along Quezon Avenue in San Fernando, the highest point offers a panoramic view of the West Philippine Sea and San Fernando harbor. It is the first Taoist temple in the Philippines that was built in 1975 to honor the Chinese sea-goddess Mazu.

The magnificent temple is an 11-tiered attraction with interiors filled with Chinese decorations and Taiwanese art, and its most popular attraction is the Spider Dome, a structure that features 13 tiers of interlinking wooden carvings of images of saints. Other colorful attractions to visit include the Bell Tower, the Drum Tower, Bamboo Garden, Lian Thing Pagoda, and the Majestic Five Door Gate. Other awe-inspiring structures such as two circular pools and other beautifully designed edifices made up of Chinse themes and motifs of lions, dragons, and deities.

The Taoist temple is a place of worship and welcomes anyone regardless of religious affiliation, race or creed. Visitors are encouraged to meditate and find solace in this magnificently designed place of worship.

Poro Point is a coastal landform on an elevated point of land that extends about 3.2KM into the West Philippine Sea. Historically called the San Fernando Point, it is found along the boundary of San Fernando bay near the international seaport. Its most striking features are the white cliffs found along it western coastline with the peninsula overlooking the Lingayen Gulf that extends up to Santiago Island in Bolinao.

Poro Point’s location makes it the ideal site for navigational purposes, and this is why it has been used as a navigational aid since 1885, with the Lighthouse as its main point of reference. Built during the Spanish colonial period, the Lighthouse is a cylindrical tower made of French prefabricated steel that stands 6 meters in height.

The lighthouse was converted into US reservation during the American colonial period, but the original structure was replaced in 1979 with a concert tower that stands 38 meters tall. In 1991, the former American facility was returned back to the Philippine government, and the lighthouse became the headquarters of the Philippine Navy, and the station named as Naval Station Ernesto Ogbinar.

Located in the town of San Gabriel, La Union, Tangadan Falls is a two-tier waterfall that flows into the Baroro River, with the water coming in from the Cordillera Mountain Ranges. The lower cascade of the falls has a width of 100 feet and a 40 foot drop, with a natural catch basin pool that is great for a quick dip on a hot summer’s day.

The upper cascade has a shorter waterfall with a deeper pool basin which is ideal for jumping off the side of the cliff. Of the two, the lower cascade features a more majestic and dramatic waterfall and is widely photographed for its striking image. The cold spring water is a refreshing respite from heat and a welcome break after the scenic trek en route to the waterfall.

Wear sturdy walking shoes along with your swimsuit on your visit to Tangadan Falls, because you’ll be doing some light trekking along the way. There’s an option to go on a one hour trek and another one where you can be dropped off at the trailhead of the falls in San Gabriel, a relatively shorter 20 minute walk to the falls.

Urbiztondo Beach is one of the San Juan, La Union tourist spots and is known as the Surfing Capital of Northern Philippines, with surfing seasons typically falling July to October and November to March. This area of La Union has a reputation for having the country’s most consistent waves, and thriving surf culture has flourished in recent years. Many places offer surfing lessons for all levels, and numerous places of lodging can also be found throughout the coastline. Surfboards are available for rent throughout the area as well.

Day 2 / Stop 1 – Tangadan Falls

Tangadan Falls is a hidden treasure off the beaten path of La Union. It’s a picturesque natural attraction that’s great for swimming, cliff jumping, hiking, and being one with nature. It’s the perfect place to start the second day of your La Union itinerary.

Once you arrive at the Tangadan Falls entrance, you’ll need to trek for about an hour to reach the falls. Don’t worry, the journey isn’t too strenuous, and you’ll be surrounded by the beauty of nature.

If you’re worried about getting lost, or you’d prefer to make the journey with a local, you can hire a guide for USD $10 – $12 at the entrance. This is the price per group, so if you’re traveling with a few other people, you can split the cost.

Along the route, you’ll pass a few areas for cliff jumping . If you’re not bothered by heights, take a break and have a go! If you’re with a guide, they’ll be able to point out the best areas.

Day 2 / Stop 2 – Immuki Island

Immuki Island is one of the more low-key La Union attractions. The beaches that surround the island are clean, bare, and unspoiled by heavy tourism. It’s a small slice of paradise.

Lagoons have formed offshore that are like small enclosed swimming pools. They’re the perfect place to enjoy a refreshing dip.

You’ll have two options for getting here. The first option is to ride a boat over for a small fee. This is probably the best option if you’re traveling with kids or older adults.

The second option is to walk over. The island can easily be reached on foot. You have to walk through the shallow waters between the main island of Barangay Paraoir and Immuki Island. The best time to do this is at low tide when the water is knee-deep. If you do it at high tide, the water will be waist-deep.

Make sure to wear durable swim slippers or footwear for the walk over. You’ll be traveling over dead coral and rocks, which are sharp. Water slippers can be purchased or rented cheaply near the island. The good news is the water is very clear, so you’ll be able to see where you’re stepping.

The clear water also makes Immuki Island a great place for snorkeling . You can rent gear before you head over to take along with you.

Insider Tip: There isn’t much shade offered on the island, so make sure to pack your sunscreen!

Day 2 / Stop 3 – Darigayos Beach

Day 2 / Stop 4 – Kamay Na Bato Open Art Gallery

Day 2 / Stop 5 – St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish of Luna

St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish is located in Luna, a small town in the province of La Union. It’s one of the historical churches in the area. It was erected during the early 1700s in a baroque style .

The facade is a beautiful creamy white with blue accents. The inside is equally stunning, with large wooden beams, ornate religious objects, and a Spanish-era stone pulpit. It’s said that the water from the well of the church heals the body and can cure diseases.

St Catherine of Alexandria Parish Church

This historic structure holds great historical significance to the town for a few reasons. For one, it’s named after St. Catherine of Alexandria, which is the town’s patron saint. The church is also famous for housing the shrine of Our Lady of Namacpacan. Before being named Luna, the town was named Namacpacan.

A fun fact about the St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish is that it’s classified as an earthquake Baroque church. Since it’s built-in an earthquake-prone area of the Philippines, it has thick walls and a brick exterior meant to withstand strong earthly forces.

Day 2 / Stop 6 – Baluarte Watch Tower

Why it’s awesome: This watchtower is one of the oldest La Union landmarks.

The Baluarte Watch Tower is a centuries-old watchtower that was built during the Spanish period. It’s located next to the sea, on a beautiful pebble beach. Understanding the history behind this landmark is what makes it so fascinating.

It was built as a lookout tower – to warn against invaders traveling by sea. It was constructed using adobe and coral blocks. Eventually, the structure split in two. And, In 2015 it suffered further collapse when a typhoon struck the coast.

However, it has since then been restored, and today, it stands as a valuable piece of Filipino history . It’s one of the more interesting La Union attractions.

Bulalakaw Falls

The journey is mostly flat and easy to navigate. As you hike, you’ll see stunning rock formations along the mountain cliffs that surround you.

Once you arrive, you can enjoy a refreshing dip . The falls drop into a pool of clear water, with a beautiful blue and green hue. They’re the perfect depth for swimming.

Bauang Beach

For adventurous travellers, you can try out their zipline course, ride around on an ATV , or go wall climbing . There is also a river that runs through the property for kayaking and canoeing . There are activities for all ages here, so this is a great stop for travelling families.

Cabanas and cottages are available to rent out, so you can spend the whole day swimming and trying out the different activities. There are snack bars and restaurants on the property and guests are also welcome to bring in their own food. After you pay for entrance, you can either pay separately for each activity or choose from their package deals.

The Minor Basilica of Our Lady of Charity, also known as Agoo Basilica, is a Roman Catholic church. La Union is known for its beautiful historic churches, and this one is no exception.

The parish was founded in 1578, and the original constructed for the church followed shortly after. Unfortunately, earthquakes have caused the church to be destroyed and rebuilt several times. The present basilica as it stands today was constructed in 1978.

The facade of the building has a beautiful rose-colored stained glass window that stands in sharp contrast to the gray hue of the building. There are also two non-identical bell towers of different heights and sizes. The interior is beautifully detailed and designed, with a large statue of Our Lady of Charity serving as the focal point.

This beautiful basilica is free to enter. All guests are welcome to visit and enjoy some quiet time and peaceful reflection.

Staying Safe in La Union

Whether you’re planning a 2-day itinerary in La Union, or a 2-week itinerary, safety is always an important thing to keep in mind.

Generally speaking, La Union is a safe place to visit. The locals are very friendly and welcoming, and tourists usually encounter very few problems. The main precautions you’ll want to take stem from the outdoor elements.

La Union is filled with beautiful hiking paths, stunning waterfalls, and endless coastlines . Exploring nature can be fun, but there is a safe way to do it. Make sure to be prepared when you’re out exploring, with the right gear, a water bottle, and sunscreen.

If you’re traveling solo, it’s probably best to keep to the more popular trails and beaches. Or, look into some fun day trips from La Union that you can enjoy in a group setting.

If you’re renting a motorbike, always wear a helmet. The roads can be slippery, especially during the rainy season. No drinking and driving, either!

Bessang Pass Natural Park

Bessang Pass Natural Park is a national park and memorial that commemorates a victory by Flipino soldiers serving the U.S. Army on June 14, 1945. The victory led to Japan’s ultimate surrender and therefore the end of WWII in the Philippines.

The park is made up of pine forests and mossy forests . You can spend all day hiking in the mountains. If you make it to the top, the views are absolutely breathtaking. Make sure to bring your camera, you’ll get some great shots of nature.

The park is clean and well maintained, with bathroom facilities and a few shops that offer food and souvenirs. A small entrance fee is required to enter. This is the perfect day trip for travelers who enjoy history and nature.

La Trinidad, Benguet

La Trinidad is a municipality in the province of Benguet. This area offers some great attractions.

La Trinidad Strawberry Farm is a popular place for picking strawberries and other seasonal produce. Mt. Kalugong Cultural Village is a tiny village you can hike to. Along the way, you’ll see incredible rock formations and be rewarded with a lovely view of La Trinidad.

The Valley of Colors is a very Instagram-worthy site. Here, you’ll find a colorful display of homes built on the side of a cliff. It’s totally unique and very visually stunning.

Tuba, Benguet

Tuba is a municipality in the province of Benguet known as the “Gateway to Baguio”. It’s a great area to enjoy outdoor, nature-related activities.

Mount Ulap is a popular grassy hiking peak with well-marked trails. It’s great for both beginners and seasoned hikers. The air on the mountain is cool and refreshing which makes hiking very enjoyable.

Gungal Rock is a stunning rock formation located near the second summit of Mt. Ulap. It offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. A day trip to Tuba is the perfect activity for travelers who enjoy nature, especially hiking.

Antong Falls

The city’s most popular attraction is Burnham Park . This large urban space is made up of 12 different areas. A few of the more popular areas include the skating rink, rose garden, picnic grove, and children’s playground.

The Baguio City (Wet & Dry) Public Market is another must-see attraction in Baguio. You’ll find all sorts of local goods at this market, including souvenirs, fresh produce, coffee beans, and more.

HOW TO GET TO LA UNION

Take one of the bus companies that leave from Manila terminals every hour: Dominion Bus Lines, Philippine Rabbit, Partas, Fariñas, Maria de Leon, and Viron. The destinations
San Fernando, the Capital of La Union, is 273 kilometers from Manila , which takes about 5 hours by land or 30 minutes by air, and is about an hour’s drive from Baguio City .

THE BEST TIME TO VISIT LA UNION

Because surfing is the main reason tourists visit La Union, the best time to explore is during the surf season, which runs from July to October due to the South Swell and November to March due to the North Swell.

La Union Travel Guide: Things to Do, Where to Stay, Where to Eat and Tourist Spots to Visit in La Union

Located in the Northern Philippines and more popularly referred to as Elyu (LU), La Union has been a favorite weekend beach getaway to many prior to the pandemic because of its proximity to Manila. And more than two years after the lockdown, tourists are back, including the ones who think they own the place and shout on the street at 11:00 PM. It is dubbed the surfing capital of the Northern Philippines. It is famous for its waves that cater to surfers regardless of skill level. In December 2019, San Juan hosted the surfing competition of the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games. To make the most out of your trip to LU, here’s a La Union travel guide to help you plan a trip.

I already published a La Union travel guide in 2021 but so much has changed especially with La Union tourism guidelines. I’ve been living in Urbiztondo, San Juan since July (I am working from home now and our house is 160 meters away from the beach) so I’ll try to make this as comprehensive as I can.

La Union Travel Guide

Who is allowed to travel to la union for leisure and tourism.

Everyone can now visit La Union. There are no more checkpoints when you enter the province. You no longer need to prepare any travel documents if you plan to visit. Establishments rarely check NAPANAM QR Code or vaccination cards now. However, all tourists are required to pay a Php 50 (~US$ 1) Environmental Fee per visit to San Juan, La Union. The Environmental Fee is collected by the accommodation establishment upon check-in/arrival.

Best Time to Visit La Union

La Union has a tropical climate. On average, the temperatures are always high. Its rainy season is from June to October with August being the wettest month. On average, the warmest month is April and the coolest month is January. February is the driest month.

La Union has two surfing seasons. The South Swell is from July to October and the North Swell is from November to March.

I would say November to March would be the best time to go as it’s not too hot, there’s less chance of rain and the waves are ideal.

Also if you can, I suggest that you visit during weekdays when there are fewer tourists. The beach gets super crowded on weekends.

Mobile Signal and Internet Connection in La Union

When the pandemic started and working from home became a thing, many relocated to La Union. If you are contemplating doing the same, internet connection is probably one of your concerns.

Mobile signal/mobile data is available in La Union for all networks. Between Smart and Globe, Smart has a better reception here in San Juan. I have also used the new network DITO, and it has a good signal too especially in San Fernando City (the capital of La Union).

There is no Sky internet here, but there is PLDT Fibr as well as Converge. We use PLDT Fibr at home and I’ve never had problems so far in the last 2 months that I have been working.

In San Juan, most accommodation establishments and restaurants have a free wifi connection.

How to Get to La Union

There are many ways to get to La Union by land, whether you are coming from the north or the south. While there is an airport in San Fernando City, there are no commercial flights to La Union.

How to Get to La Union by Private Transportation

Getting to La Union from Manila by private transportation is the most convenient way. However, not everyone has this option. If coming from Metro Manila, the trip will take around 4 hours via NLEX-SCTEX-TPLEX.

From Baguio to La Union, it will take you around 1 hour. Take the Naguilian Road as it is the fastest route.

From Laoag City to La Union, the trip takes around 3 hours (at night time).

How to Get to La Union by Public Transportation

Travel to la union by bus.

If you don’t have your own car, worry not because provincial buses are back in operation but they have fewer trips now. If you are coming from the south, take any bus bound to Laoag, Abra, Vigan, or Candon. Partas, Viron, Dominion, Fariñas, Maria de Leon, Candon Bus Line, Santa Lucia Express, and Florida are buses from Metro Manila that pass by La Union. Bus fare from Metro Manila to La Union is around Php 500 to Php 800.

From Baguio, you can take Partas, Mitchacoy or Fred and Cathy. There are also mini-buses that have an hourly trip from Baguio to San Fernando, La Union.

If you are coming from the north, take the bus bound to Baguio, Pangasinan, or Manila/Cubao/Pasay. Partas, Viron, Dominion, Fariñas, Maria de Leon, Candon Bus Line, Santa Lucia Express, and Florida are buses from the north (Laoag, Abra, or Vigan) that pass by La Union.

How to get to La Union from NAIA (Ninoy Aquino International Airport)

This question was asked in a backpacking group last time so I thought of adding this here. To get to La Union from the airport, you can take a taxi or book a car with Grab. Put Viron Bus Terminal, Cubao as the destination. When you reach the bus station, buy a ticket to San Juan, La Union, if you are staying in the town of San Juan. The bus fare is Php 580 (~US$ 10). On the bus, when the bus conductor checks your ticket, tell him to drop you off in San Juan. The bus goes all the way to Ilocos Sur so make sure to tell him where you are alighting.

Note: There are trips to La Union that terminate in San Fernando, La Union. If you happen to ride that bus, and your accommodation is in San Juan which is the town next to San Fernando, just hail a tricycle outside the bus station to take you to your accommodation. The fare is around 50 to 100 pesos.

Travel to La Union by Carpool

Another way to get to La Union which is more expensive than taking the bus is through carpooling. Normally, you will find them on Facebook Groups. Just enter the keyword La Union Carpool. The rate is somewhere around Php 1500 from Manila to La Union.

How to Get Around La Union

Buses within La Union and jeepneys from San Fernando City to other towns in La Union are now in operation. Tricycles in each town and in the city are in operation as well.

If you are planning to go on a tour to the different tourist spots in La Union, you can hire a tricycle in San Juan. The cost depends on the tourist spots that you are planning to visit. The cost is around Php 1500 (maybe it increased now) for a whole day tour.

La Union Tourist Spots to Visit

Though La Union is popular because of surfing, there are other places in La Union that you can visit aside from the beach. When tourists from other provinces were not yet allowed here in the latter part of 2020, my two siblings and I would take our nephew out on Sundays and drive to a tourist spot in La Union. Here are La Union tourist spots that you can add to your itinerary on your trip to La Union:

Agoo Eco-Fun World

Agoo Eco-Fun Park is a man-made forest located in Sta. Rita West and Sta. Rita Central in Agoo, La Union. It is a wide piece of land covered with agoho trees (Casuarina equisetifolia). A few meters from the man-made forest is the beach with fine grayish sand. Picnic huts are available in the beach area.

Centennial Tunnel/Salapak Tunnel

Located in Aringay, La Union, the Centennial Tunnel is a 500-meter tunnel made in 1913 during the American regime. It was intended for the trains of the Philippine National Railways (PNR) bound for Baguio City. Because of the then-impending Second World War, the Commonwealth Government abandoned it. According to the locals, the tunnel already exists during the Spanish era, but it was only during the American occupation that it was developed.

Pindangan Ruins

Located in San Fernando City, it is a Spanish-built church ruin that is now being looked after by the Carmelite Sisters whose monastery stands beside the ruins. The church was built in 1764. A great earthquake in 1892 damaged the church and left it in ruins.

Poro Point Baywalk

Located in Brgy. Poro, San Fernando City, Poro Point Baywalk is a 1.3 km-long promenade fronting San Fernando Bay. It is near Thunderbird Hotel Resort and Casino. The baywalk has playgrounds, picnic areas, and an amphitheater. It is a good place to jog, bike, or have a picnic. Make sure you check out the beach when you visit the Baywalk. The sand is nicer than that in Urbiztondo Beach.

Poro Point Light House

Located in Poro Point, San Fernando City, the Poro Point Light House was built during the American occupation in 1905. It is a concrete tower standing 27 feet high. At night, there is a bright white light that flashes every 10 seconds indicating it is still functional.

Macho Temple

Overlooking the West Philippine Sea, Macho Temple is a Taoist temple located on a hill in the City of San Fernando. It is a good spot to watch the sunset.

Urbiztondo Beach

Urbiztondo Beach is located in the heart of San Juan, La Union. Manage your expectations as it is not a white sand beach, not as nice as the beaches in Palawan, and it is not lined with coconut trees. But it has got the best sunsets. It is the primary spot for surfing. Urbiztondo Beach is where the surfing competition of the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games was held.

Taboc Baywalk

Located in Brgy. Taboc in San Juan, this baywalk is a good spot to watch the sunset. Surf instructors bring their students here for the surfing lesson when the waves in Urbiztondo are too big for beginners.

Tangadan Falls

Located in San Gabriel, Tangadan Falls is a two-tiered waterfall with the lower cascade as the main attraction. It is around 40 feet high and its catch basin is around 20 feet deep. Immuki Island

Located in Brgy. Paraoir, Balaoan, Immuki Island is not really an island. It’s just dead corals a few meters away from the shore and surrounded by mangroves. There are three big lagoons that are perfect for swimming or if you are more adventurous, you can do cliff jumping. Bato de Luna Art Gallery

Located in Nalvo Norte, Luna, Bato de Luna is an art gallery that showcases the works of Korean stone sculptor Mr. Bong Kim. It exhibits different art using stones (Luna has a pebble-covered beach) and mural art. It is located in Nalvo Norte, Luna, La Union. Luna Pebble Beach

Located in Luna, the entire shore of Luna Pebble Beach is covered with rounded stones of different colors and sizes. Locals collect these stones and sell them.

Baluarte Watch Tower

Standing on Luna Pebble Beach, the Baluarte Watch Tower was built during the Spanish era as a lookout point for an impending attack of pirates or danger from the sea.

What to Do in La Union

Aside from visiting the beautiful tourist spots in La Union, there are other things that you can do. Here are some of the things to do in La Union:

Surf or learn how to surf

One of the reasons people visit La Union is to surf. La Union is filled with numerous surfing spots. And these surfing spots have waves suitable for beginner, intermediate and advanced surfers alike. Surf lessons are offered for Php 500 per hour. If you already know how to surf but you don’t have a surfboard, there are surfboards available for rent also.

Attend a clay pottery class

If you’re looking for an activity that is both fun and therapeutic, I recommend attending a clay pottery class. Red Clay Pagdamilian in San Juan offers a hands-on pottery-making experience. You’ll learn basic pottery making (pinching and coiling) and at the end of the class, you get to take home your output. The pottery-making lesson costs Php 250 per person. Experience sea turtle hatchling release

CURMA or Coastal Underwater Resource Management Actions is a sea turtle conservation effort in La Union. The highlight of CURMA is the release of sea turtle hatchlings who have come out of their nests and guided through the shore to the sea. There are hatchlings due this month until March. If you are lucky, you may be able to experience one of the release activities. Follow CURMA on Facebook and Instagram so you’ll see updates when there is a scheduled release.

Watch the sunset

The beaches in La Union are not as nice as those in Palawan, but the sunsets are amazing. I always watch the sunset whenever I have time and I never get tired of doing so. Grapes picking in one of the grape farms in Bauang or Aringay

Along the national highway in Bauang and Aringay, you’ll see individuals holding signage that says “Grape Picking”. Many grape farms can be found in these areas. You can do grape picking straight from the vines on these farms. All farms offer “pick and pay” for their grapes.

Visit all the watchtowers of La Union

Did you know that there are six watchtowers in La Union? These were built along the coastlines of La Union during the Spanish era. Made of coral limestones and bricks, these watchtowers served as a lookout point for impending attacks by pirates or danger from the sea. The National Museum of the Philippines declared these collectively a National Cultural Treasure in 2014. The good news is that you can visit 5 out of six of these, although I don’t recommend checking out the one in Bauang because there’s nothing to see there anymore. Walk from Urbiztondo Beach to Jesus Point in Carille

If you were wondering if you can walk the shoreline from Urbiztondo Beach in San Juan to Jesus Point in Carille, San Fernando, the answer is yes. I did it a few times last year and even wrote a post about it. You can also do it from Urbiztondo Beach to Taboc Baywalk.

Do a buwis-buhay (risky) shot at Almeida Man-Made Forest

On your way to Luna after the Holcim Cement Plant, you’ll pass by a road in Brgy. Almeida, Balaoan covered with trees. It is near Navalta Beach. Many people stop here to take a picture in the middle of the road. It can be a bit risky though because it is a busy road.

Where to Stay in La Union

Almost all accommodation establishments in La Union are now open. Depending on your budget, La Union has a range of options for accommodations. From luxury beach resorts and hotels to private vacation homes, homestays, or backpackers’ hostels, La Union got you covered.

Although San Fernando City is the capital of La Union, most people visiting La Union stay in Brgy. Urbiztondo in the town of San Juan. It is where you will find the surf schools and the more popular restaurants.

Before the pandemic, accommodations in San Juan get fully booked during the surfing break. If you want to stay in Urbiztondo, make sure you book weeks ahead. In case you are not able to find a place in San Juan, there are hotels in San Fernando as well as in the other towns of La Union like Luna, Bacnotan, and Bauang.

Where to stay in La Union for budget travelers/backpackers

The circle hostel.

The Circle Hostel is not a beachfront property but it is within walking distance to Urbiztondo Beach and near restaurants. It is a good place to meet fellow backpackers.

Other Useful Information When In La Union

Where to park in urbiztondo.

Parking along the road is no longer allowed in San Juan. The good news is that there are “pay parking” spaces in Urbiztondo. Here are two:

Park and Surf

This parking area is located across Wych Wood Apartelle, before Urbiz Garden Plage if you are northbound.

Parking area near JV’s Apartelle

Across Port San Juan, you will see Coco Shack or JV’s Apartelle. Between these two there is an alley that goes to the beach. The parking lot is located beside Lakbai Musika.

Where to Buy Beer, Cigarette, and Grocery Items in San Juan?

If you are staying somewhere in Urbiztondo and don’t want to go to the San Juan Public Market or San Fernando City anymore, our shop has most of the things you need such as toiletries, chips, biscuits, beer, cigarettes, sunblock, face masks, and alcohol. Our shop TBX General Merchandise is located across Dampa sa San Juan.

If you are staying in the southern part of Urbiztondo like Planet G Hotel or The Circle Hostel La Union, there is 7-Eleven near Sebay Surf Central.

If you are staying in the Ili Norte/Sur area, San Juan Public Market is located within that area. There is also a 7-Eleven near the public market.

Where to Withdraw Money in San Juan?

There are no banks in San Juan but there are ATMs. There is one in front of KM 277 Tavern by the Sea, another in front of Beach Bum Food Park, and another in front of Urbiz Garden Plage.

Most restaurants in San Juan accept Gcash payments. Gcash cash-in and cash-out are available in TBX General Merchandise for a lower transaction fee.

If you need to withdraw over the counter, you will have to go to San Fernando.

Where to Exchange Dollars to Pesos in La Union?

You can exchange dollars in banks and Western Union but I found that Villarica Pawnshop has the best rate. There are three Villarica Pawnshops in San Fernando City along Gov. Ortega St. One is near Crazy Cups La Union, another is located in San Fernando Public Market and the third one is located near BDO.

Are There Malls in La Union?

Yes, there are but not as big as the ones in Metro Manila. CSI Mall, Manna Mall, and Robinsons Place La Union are all located in San Fernando City.

Where to Buy Souvenirs/ Pasalubong

There are souvenir shops in San Juan selling local crafts and delicacies such as bagnet and longganisa. One is near San Juan Surf Resort and the other is near Beach Bum Food Park.

For hand-woven products such as blankets, shawls, table runners, and towels, you can buy them at Noguera’s Weaving in the town of Bangar.

If you are a plantito/plantita and you would like to bring home clay pots, drop by Brgy. Taboc in San Juan. You’ll find the shops selling pots along the National Highway.

Lastly, if you want to bring home tupig , a Filipino rice cake made from ground slightly-fermented soaked glutinous rice mixed with coconut milk, muscovado sugar, and young coconut strips, look for the stores selling coconut along the diversion road in San Juan.

Additional Tips When Visiting La Union

Don’t forget to bring reef-safe sunscreen . You’ll be staying under the sun for very long periods of time so better protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays.
An insect repellent may come in handy too.
San Juan is very safe even for solo female travelers but as in any place, don’t leave your things, especially your valuables unattended, and always trust your instinct.

This was a super helpful guide, thank you. How frequent are brownouts (if any) in San Juan and for how long they last roughly?

I just got back to La Union last week after being away for a month, and since I got back here we only had one brownout that was like 20 minutes long. In the past there would be brownouts, maybe once very two weeks. And normally the 8 hour long brownouts are on Saturdays and happens maybe once every two months. But they announce it in advance.

I’ve been planning to blog a LA UNION Travel Guide since I returned from a trip with a friend this year. Although I’ve been there before due to a blogger’s trip, I didn’t get to explore the attractions because our schedule was tight. So when I revisited Abra recently, we made a side trip to La Union on our way back to Manila. Fortunately, the weather cooperated so we got to explore the top tourist spots in La Union for first-timers.

TRAVEL BLOG CONTENTS

BEST TIME TO VISIT LA UNION

Since the main reason tourists go to La Union is surfing, the best time to visit is during the surf season in La Union – July to October due to the South Swell and November to March due to the North Swell . But this doesn’t mean you have to skip it during the off-peak months because this province is more than just a surfing destination. La Union is a year-round destination because of the wealth of activities you can do here aside from surfing and I will discuss that in this blog.

HOW TO GET TO LA UNION FROM MANILA

MANILA TO SAN FERNANDO LA UNION

If you are coming from Manila, you can ride a bus to San Fernando, La Union like Partas, Viron and Dominion. PHP 436 (USD 9/ SGD 12/ MYR 37) to PHP 524 (USD 10/SGD 14/MYR 44) depending on the type of bus. Travel time is about 5-7 hours depending on traffic and where you are coming from.

From San Fernando, you can take a jeep to Urbiztondo Beach or San Juan, La Union for PHP 11 (USD 0.22/SGD 0.30/MYR 0.93). Alternatively, you can charter a tricycle for PHP 50 (USD 1/SGD 1.35/MYR 4) or PHP 25 (USD 0.49/SGD 1.35/MYR 4.23) per person. Travel time is about 25 minutes.

LIST OF BUS TERMINAL FOR BUSES FROM MANILA TO LA UNION

MANILA TO URBIZTONDO BEACH (SAN JUAN, LA UNION)

Partas Bus now offers direct trips from Manila (Cubao/Pasay) to San Juan, La Union (SEBAY). First trip from Pasay to San Juan, La Union is 12:00 AM and second trip is at 5:00 AM. Meanwhile, first trip from Cubao to San Juan, La Union is 1:00 AM and 2nd trip is 6:00 AM. Bus fare is PHP 524 (USD 10/ SGD 14/ MYR 44). Travel time is roughly 5-7 hours.

For return trip from SEBAY San Juan, La Union to Manila, first trip from San Juan, La Union to Cubao or Pasay is at 3:00 PM and second trip is at 10:00 PM. On the other hand, first trip from San Fernando, La Union to Cubao or Pasay is at 3:30 PM and second trip is at 10:30 PM. Bus fare is PHP 524 (USD 10/ SGD 14/ MYR 44). Travel time is roughly 5-7 hours.

Most tourists traveling to La Union pick either San Juan or San Fernando as a base. We chose San Juan La Union since most of the budget and mid-range hotels and resorts are concentrated here. Not to mention its proximity to the surfing beach – Urbiztondo Beach. But San Fernando also offers good options for travelers who are willing to spend more for comfort.

SURF IN URBIZTONDO BEACH

La Union is synonymous to surfing, and the beach that tourists actually flock to in this massive province is Urbiztondo Beach. Surfing in La Union reportedly started back in the 70’s when a Japanese trained the locals to surf. But the father of the famous surfer Luke Landrigan – Brian Landrigan is credited for the popularity of La Union now in the surfing scene in the Philippines. Surfing in La Union Urbiztondo Beach costs PHP 400 (USD 8/SGD 11/MYR 34) per hour with instructor and surf board and PHP 500 (USD 10/SGD 14/MYR 42) for half day lesson (surf board rental separate charge). PHP 200 (USD 4/SGD 5.38/MYR 17) for surf board rental per hour.

How to get to Urbiztondo Beach in San Juan La Union:

Take a bus bound for La Union and alight at tell the conductor you are getting at Urbiztondo Beach in San Juan La Union. Bus fare to la Union from Manila is PHP 400 (USD 8/SGD 11/MYR 34). Travel time is 5 to 7 hours depending on traffic or where you are coming from. If you are staying in San Fernando, La Union, you can just ride a jeep to San Juan and alight at Urbiztondo Beach. Fare is PHP 11 (USD 0.22/SGD 0.30/MYR 0.93). Alternatively, if you are in a group, you may take a tricycle to Urbiztondo Beach from downtown La Union for PHP 50 (USD 1/SGD 1.35/MYR 4), good for two or PHP 100 (USD 2/SGD 3/MYR 9), good for 4 persons.

TREK AND SWIM AT TANGADAN FALLS

Tangadan Falls in San Gabriel La Union lures weekenders who seek other adventures in La Union aside from surfing. Be warned that trekking is involved here, you need to hike for about an hour to get to the waterfalls. The trail is pleasantly forest-fringed and requires river trekking. There are 2 key falls here, the first one you’ll encounter is a perfect place for cliff jumping, while the main falls – Tangadan Falls is perfect for swimming. Life jackets are for rent for PHP 50 (USD 1/SGD 1.35/MYR 4). Bamboo rafts are also available at the main waterfall.

How to get to Tangadan Falls

From San Juan or San Fernando La Union, ride a jeep to San Gabriel. Tell the driver you are going to Tangadan Falls so he can drop you at the tricycle lane bound for the waterfalls. Jeep drivers in La Union are really helpful, so don’t be shy to ask. Jeep fare to San Gabriel is PHP 19 (USD 0.38/SGD 0.51/MYR 1.61). Charter a tricycle to the trailhead to Tangadan Falls, fare is PHP 50 (USD 1/SGD 1.35/MYR 4) or PHP 25 (USD 0.49/SGD 1.35/MYR 4.23) per person.

At the checkpoint, pay the PHP 30 (USD 0.59/SGD 0.81/MYR 2.54) entrance fee per person. At the trailhead, hire a guide to take you to Tangadan Falls, guide fee is PHP 500 (USD 10/SGD 13/MYR 42).

Alternatively, from San Juan or San Fernando, you can charter a tricycle to Tangadan Falls jumping-off point for the trek. Just approach a tricycle driver or hail a tricycle. Fare is PHP 500 (EURO / USD 10/ SGD 13/ MYR 42), one way, good for 3-4 persons. Guide fee not included yet.

How to get to La Union Grape Farms in Bauang:

If you are coming from San Juan, you may take ride the jeep to San Fernando and instruct the driver to drop you off at the jeep terminal to Bauang, La Union. Ride the jeep to Bauang and tell the driver you are alighting at Brgy. Urayong. Jeep fare to Bauang, La Union is PHP 11 (USD 0.22/SGD 0.30/MYR 0.93). Alight in front of Bauang Church and rent a tricycle to La Union Grape Farm. There are many grape farms in Bauang so just tell the driver where you want to go. Some of the popular grape farms in La Union are: Gapuz Grape Farm, Mangguera Grape Farm, Lomboy Grape Farm and Calica Grape Farm. One way tricycle fare is PHP 100 (USD 2/SGD 3/MYR 8). But since the grape farms are far from the town proper, I suggest you talk to the driver and ask him to wait for you for your return trip. You can negotiate the amount for your return and wait time. Otherwise, you can hire motorcycles to take you back to Bauang Proper or to the highway where you can wait for buses back to Manila.

EXPLORE MACHO TEMPLE

The 7-storied Macho Temple in San Fernando, La Union is blissfully standing on a hill. This Taoist Temple is dedicated to Mazu, a Chinese sea-goddess. Must-see here are the Liang Thing Pagoda, the Bell Tower and the Drum Tower, the Majestic Five Door Gate, the Bamboo Garden and the golden emblem of the dragon.

How to get to Macho Temple in San Fernando, La Union:

From San Juan, La Union, ride the jeep to San Fernando. Fare is PHP 11 (USD 0.22/SGD 0.30/MYR 0.93). In San Fernando, hire a tricycle to take you to Macho Temple. Fare is about PHP 10 (USD 0.20/SGD0.27/MYR 1) – PHP 20 (USD 0.39/SGD 0.54/MYR 2) per person.

VISIT BALAY NA BATO

If you’re in Luna, La Union, don’t miss the charming Balay na Bato in Brgy. Nalvo Norte fronting the azure pebble beach. This small yet stylish house was built out of woods and pebbles from the nearby beach. The house is peppered with stone sculpture created by a Korean named Bong Kim. There is also a 3D House inside the Balay na Bato vicinity and a gallery showcasing handcrafted goods and textiles that visitors can buy as souvenirs. Entrance fee is PHP 30 (USD 0.59/SGD 1/MYR 3).

How to get to Balay na Bato

From San Fernando or San Juan, ride a jeep to Luna town. Fare is PHP 30 (USD 0.59/SGD 1/MYR 3). At Luna, charter a tricycle to take you to Balay na Bato, one way fare is PHP 50 (USD 1/SGD 1.35/MYR 4), good for two persons.

MARVEL AT THE SIGHT OF THE PEBBLE BEACH

La Union is pretty known for its picturesque pebble beaches and you can find them sprinkled in the town of Luna. While the Pebble Beach Resort is where most tricycle drivers will take you, I recommend going to the one near Balay na Bato instead. Because the former is almost stripped of pebble beaches, same with the pebble beach near Luna’s Watch Tower. The Pebble Beach near Balay na Bato is still fringed with smooth pebbles. But I wouldn’t be surprised if in the future they become devoid of pebbles because it seems the local government unit is not prohibiting the locals from gathering and selling the pebbles. Which is unfortunate if you ask me.

How to get to Pebble Beach (near Balay na Bato)

From San Juan or San Fernando, board a jeep to Luna. Fare is PHP 30 (USD 0.59/SGD 1/MYR 3). At Luna, ride a tricycle to Balay na Bato, one way chartered fare is PHP 50 (USD 1/SGD 1.35/MYR 4), good for two persons.

How to get to Luna’s Watchtower

From San Fernando or San Juan, ride a jeep to Luna town. Fare is PHP 30 (USD 0.59/SGD 1/MYR 3). At Luna, charter a tricycle to take you to Luna Watchtower.

VISIT NAMACPACAN CHURCH

Once you reach Luna, the beautiful Namacpacan Church (Santa Catalina de Alexandria Church) crowning the town center will welcome you. This beautiful Baroque Church was declared a National Cultural Treasure. Inside the church lies the image of Apo Baket, a venerated image of the Virgin Mary believed to be miraculous.

How to get to Namacpacan Church

Hop on a jeep to Luna Town from San Juan or San Fernando. Fare is PHP 30 (USD 0.59/SGD 1/MYR 3). Alight at the town center near Luna’s Church.

WHERE TO EAT IN LA UNION

One of the top things to do when in La Union is food trip. San Juan is peppered with stylish restaurants. Here are some of our favorites. We actually tried more restaurants, but we didn’t like the food, so I didn’t include it in this list. I’ll write a more detailed review soon.

LA UNION ITINERARY WITH EXPENSES (2 Days 1 Night)

Here’s a sample La Union 2 days 1 night itinerary, perfect for travelers who wants to spend a weekend here . Feel free to adjust this based on your schedule and budget. The budget mentioned is based on two persons traveling to La Union. I also blogged about the expenses for each activities below.

This budget of approximately PHP 3,145 (USD 62/SGD 85/MYR 267) -for La Union trip (2 days 1 night) is if you are a party of two, and you stick to a PHP 150 (USD 3/SGD 4/MYR 13) per meal budget and supposing you are able to book a room for PHP 600 (USD 12/SGD 16/MYR 51) per person. This budget can go lower if you’re not doing the other activities, for example the grape farm (if it’s not grape picking season) or the surfing lesson (if you know how to surf, you can just rent a board for PHP 200 (USD 4/SGD 5.38/MYR 17). La Union is one of the most popular tourist destinations up north of Metro Manila. Being the surfing capital of Northern Luzon, this place becomes very busy from October to March, when the waves swell. While surfing remains the primary reason why tourists visit La Union, more and more sites are starting to come into view. The province also cradles other impressive and beautiful sceneries such as Pindangan Ruins, Ma Cho Temple, La Union Botanical Garden, La Union Centennial Tree, and Arosip Ecotrail.

How to Get to La Union from Metro Manila

PRIVATE TRANSPORTATION

The road trip from Manila to La Union used to take 5-6 hours. Now, with the newly constructed TPLEX or Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway, travel time was lessened down to 4 hours.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

You can take buses bound for Laoag from Cubao. Partas Transport travels to Laoag every hour, 24/7.
Alight at Urbiztondo, San Juan, La Union, the surfing site where you can find a lot of beach-front resorts. You may also opt to travel from Manila to San Fernando, La Union by bus and then take a short jeep ride to San Juan.

Other bus companies enroute to La Union are as follows:

Sampaloc, Manila terminal – Autobus Transport Systems, Farinas Transit Company, Franco Frederico Lines, RCJ Transit, Viron Transportation Company, Maria de Leon

Cubao, Quezon City Terminal – Dominion Transit Location, Martinez Trans

Places to Visit & Things to Do in La Union

Surfing in La Union – a visit in the province of La Union is not complete if you can’t dance with its famous waves. Make sure that you try surfing once you set your feet in this province. (We will write a separate, more detailed entry about La Union surfing) (PhP400 PER HOUR OF SURFING WITH INSTRUCTOR ** PhP200 SURF RENTAL/1 HOUR)

Arosip Ecotrail – this place offers visitors a nice adventure with Mother Nature, complete with the cool shades of towering trees and magnificent views. For those looking for a challenging adventure, the Arosip Ecotrail is the perfect place. The highest point of the trail is 440MASL; it gives way to the scenic lowland Bacnotan, national highway, West Philippine Sea, and other prominent structures or landmarks of the province. The 45-minute trek composed of several ascends and descends showcases four wonderful waterfalls: (a) The Zim-sim-ug Twin Falls which has an estimated height of 20ft and a basin deep of 8-9ft; (b) Pad-tok Falls with an estimated height of 22ft with shallow basin. The combined water of the two falls all meet in one main waterfalls called (c) Tekdag-aso Falls which is located west of the bedrock. Below this waterfalls is a wide secondary basin which is best for swimming.

Centennial Tree – In Barangay Carcarmay (Carcarmay Elementary School) stands the towering La Union Centennial Tree. It has a trunk so big that it requires more than 10 people holding each other hands to embrace its diameter. According to stories certified by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, this centennial tree has been planted way back 1896. (NO ENTRANCE FEE)

La Union Botanical Garden – Somewhere in Brgy. Cadaclan San Fernando, La Union lies the five hectare botanical garden. A recreational park that pride itself as a research and conservation center of flora in the province. Several species of birds and other animals can also be found in the area. It has paved trails made for easy walk and better accessibility when touring the place. (PhP10 ENTRANCE FEE)

Pindangan Ruins – these ruins in Brgy. Perian, San Fernando, La Union are remnants of an old church built in May 6, 1786 after being destroyed by an earthquake in 1892. Pindangan Ruins is just several meters away from the National Road and lies near Camp Oscar Florendo, the Regional Headquarters of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and just beside Carmelite Sisters monastery. (NO ENTRANCE FEE)

Ma Cho Temple – this intricate structure in Barangay II, San Fernando, La Union (along the national highway, Quezon Avenue) has an elevation of 70MASL. It is a 7-storey, 11-tiered towering temple boasting multi-hued attraction that captures the heart of many visitors. Adorned by Chinese motif of Taipei lions and dragons and accented with massive stones, you will definitely be impressed by its beauty. Many had been amazed by its original spider-typed dome with the interlinking wood carvings of saints. Ma-Cho Temple is also open to the worshipers and non-worshipers alike. (NO ENTRANCE FEE)

Other Attractions : La Union Provincial Capitol, Baluarte Watch Tower, Centennial Tunnel, World War II Vintage Canon, Basilica of Our Lady of Charity, Our Lady of Namacpacan, Cathedral of St. William the Hermit, St. Christopher Parish, St. John the Baptist Parish, Sts. Peter; Paul Parish and St. Michael, the Archangel Parish, inter alia. Museo de Iloko, Museo de San Juan, Bolikewkew Rice, Bambana Natural Cove Formation, Terraces, Amburayan River, Tapuacan River, Thunderbird Resort, Poro Point Boardwalk, La Union Medical Center, Eagle of the North Park, Imelda Garden, Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers, Hanging Bridge and Bacsil Ridge, and Grapes Picking in Bauan.

Located on the beachfront in San Fernando, CV Bed n Bath La Union features a shared lounge. This 2-star guest house offers a 24-hour front desk. Guests can enjoy garden views. How to Get to TANGADAN FALLS, La Union + Sample Itinerary & Budget

If you think La Union has nothing else to offer other than surfing, you’re gravely mistaken! Elyu has a diverse set of wonders kept in its nooks and crannies. But if you’re staying in Urbiztondo in San Juan, one attraction that you shouldn’t miss is Tangadan Falls !

La Union has over a dozen waterfalls spread throughout the province — from the mildly sloping Lang-ay Falls in Tubao up to the little-known Occalong Falls in Luna. But perhaps the most popular of these cascades is Tangadan Falls , tucked in the sleepy town of San Gabriel. Punctuating a portion of the Baroro River, this waterfall has two tiers, each with a natural pool at the base, surrounded by limestone cliffs and giant boulders.

Tangadan Falls is located in Barangay Amontoc in the mountainous area of San Gabriel, La Union. So the first step is to get into La Union. This waterfall is too far for a day trip straight from Manila, so most travelers visit it as part of a greater La Union itinerary. They usually book a hotel or resort in either San Juan (particularly Urbiztondo Beach) or San Fernando City. From here, you can dedicate half a day to this waterfall.

How to Get to Tangadan Falls

1. board a bus to san fernando..

If you’re coming from Metro Manila, the only transit companies that we know carry passengers to La Union directly are PARTAS and VIRON Transport (as of May 2022). Both have terminals in Cubao . You can also find La Union-bound buses at Viron’s Sampaloc Terminal .

Board a bus to San Fernando City or San Juan, depending on where your accommodation is located. Most La Union buses terminate in San Fernando City.

Alternatively, if you’re staying elsewhere, you may catch a bus bound for Abra or Ilocos instead and alight in San Juan or another town in La Union. (Note that NOT ALL buses allow this, so it’s important to ask a staff member before booking a ticket.)

If you are bringing your own car, just use Google Maps or Waze, then search San Gabriel Municipal Hall.

2. Ride a tricycle or jeepney to San Gabriel Town Proper.

The travel time is about 45 minutes from San Fernando and about 30 minutes from San Juan. Jeepney fare is between P15 and P20 pesos.

If you’re coming from San Fernando, head to Tanqui Transport Terminal to catch a jeepney.
If you’re coming from San Juan, go to People’s Park, located just across the San Juan Municipal Hall.

A more convenient (but more expensive) option: Hail a tricycle that will take you directly to San Gabriel Municipal Hall. Roundtrip fare starts at P500 if you’re solo, or more if you’re a group. (We paid P800 for a party of 3.) The driver can wait for you at the town proper and take you back to your hotel or resort after.

If you want to make the most of your day, arrange a combined Tangadan Falls + Northern Tour (which includes a visit to Immuki Island in Bacnotan and stone attractions in Luna). Tours like this range from P1800 to P2000.

3. Pay the entrance fee at the Municipal Treasury Office.

The tricycle will drop you off around San Gabriel Municipal Hall. It’s located beside the Police Station at the junction.

Pay the environmental fee/entrance fee at the Municipal Treasury Office. The fee is P30 per person.

“No Receipt, No Entry” rule is in effect. You may be asked to present the official receipt when at the site.

4. Hire a tour guide.

Yes, it’s required. A “No Tour Guide, No Entry” is in effect. You’ll find the tour guide station beside the police station.

The tour guide fee is P500 per group. We weren’t able to catch how many members are allowed per group. But we were a party of three and we were considered just one group.

5. Ride a habal-habal or jeepney to the trailhead.

Choose between a habal-habal (motorcycle) and a jeep.

Habal-habal roundtrip fare is P400 per pax and P600 for two pax. A unit can accommodate up to 2 passengers. If time is an issue or if you’re visiting early in the morning, this is the mode of transpo for you.
Jeepney fare is P120-150 per person, depending on the total number of passengers per trip. But it might wait for more passengers before departing. If you are a big group and you are planning to rent a jeepney, it costs about P1,800 — good for up to 15 pax.

The travel time is 20-30 minutes.

6. Trek to the waterfall.

It’s a 15-20 minute hike down a mostly concrete staircase to the waterfall. But it still depends on your pace.

NOTE: The road leading to the trailhead is narrow and winding, and some parts are steep. It’s quite challenging if you are not familiar with the road.

Things to Do at Tangadan Falls

Swimming. Take a dip into the cold freshwater of the Baroro River. If you are not a confident swimmer, you can rent a life vest or just swim in the shallow parts. The mossy rocks are very slippery, so be careful.
Cliff Diving. If you are feeling adventurous, go cliff jumping! Check the drop point if there are swimmers below before taking the plunge. Note that the original cliff jumping point is closed due to safety reasons, but you can still jump from the lower protruding rock near the falls.
Snap away. Take lots of photos. This picturesque natural gem, with the surrounding limestone cliffs, makes for a stunning photo backdrop.

Sample tangadan falls itinerary.

Below is a full-day itinerary that includes a stop in Tangadan Falls. Note that this assumes you’re staying in San Juan, like we did. You can use this as part of a bigger La Union itinerary.

Tricycle tour for Tangadan Falls is P500 if solo, P800 if you’re a group of 3. If you want to also visit Luna and Immuki Island (after Tangadan Falls), combined tricycle tour is P1800 to P2000.

In our case, we all agreed to visit Tangadan Falls really early to avoid the crowd. We were also a party of 3, splitting some of the costs.

When is the best time to go?

The cascades are strong during the rainy season, but some parts of the trail get muddy. It’s best to visit two to three days after a rainfall. There’s a high chance of seeing twin cascades in the wet season, too. However, check the official announcement of the municipal’s tourism office or the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council for closure and warnings before you visit.

If you want to avoid big crowds, visit on a weekday. If you can’t help visiting on a weekend or holiday, try to be there early in the morning (like we did).

Are walk-in visitors allowed?

Yes! But if you want to secure your slot, you can arrange for the tour a day or a night before your visit.

Is there a parking lot?

If you are bringing your own car, you may park at the jeepney terminal where the tour guide station is also located. But since it’s a public terminal, you need to be there early before the slots are filled.

There is also a parking space at the trailhead. We’re just not sure if they allow private cars to drive all the way here.

Do we really need to hire a tour guide?

No tour guide, no entry.

Also, don’t forget the official receipt (OR) issued by the Municipal Treasury Office.

Where to eat?

There’s a snack and souvenir stall at the trailhead’s parking area (where the habal-habal and “monster” jeepneys park).

Is it senior- and kid-friendly?

Kids, maybe.

But perhaps not for seniors and definitely not for those with mobility problems. The trek back to the jump-off point entails ascending trails and a long flight of concrete steps. Although there are rest stops, it might still be challenging for small kids, seniors, and those with mobility issues.

But if your tired going to tangadan falls and you dont want to use the longer trail again to went back you can hire a habal habal which is 200 ONLY!!! if they ask you 250 you can say “bogus ka ata eh” for sure they will be shocked. For short trail a 15 mins walk going down to the waterfalls, Tourguide fee – 1 up to 5 persons 500 pesos, if your 6 to 10 1000 pesos, and ao far and so on Convoy fee- 400 pesos roundtrip if you want to drive your car going to the jump off if your not using Jeepney topload ride or the habal habal ride optional

HOW TO GET TO LA UNION

Getting to la union by bus from manila.

If you are getting from Manila to La Union by bus . The most popular is Partas with routes going to Laoag, Vigan and San Fernando in La Union . Prices are around 500 PHP per head. The travel time is around 5-7 hours depending on traffic and where you are coming (from Cubao or Pasay).

Once you are in San Fernando, you can take a jeepney to Urbiztondo Beach or San Juan, where most of the accommodation and restaurants are. The price for the jeepney ride is 11 PHP. There are also tricycles available if you prefer a solo ride.

If you went by bus with Partas, there are a few direct trips to San Juan Beach in La Union. There are a couple of them actually, one in the afternoon and one at night.

GETTING FROM PAMPANGA TO LA UNION BY BUS

If you are getting to from Pampanga to La Union. We chose this option since we are based in Angeles City and we traveled by bus with Partas. The travel time from Pampanga to La Union was around 4-5 hours and there is no fixed schedule.

However, we observed that there is a few buses take trips during the day. The price from San Fernando in La Union to DAU Terminal was 333 PHP.

GETTING TO LA UNION BY BUS FROM VIGAN

If you are getting to La Union from Vigan. You can take a 2-hour bus ride that costs around 250 PHP to La Union. There are hourly bus rides to San Fernando and La Union. Read here how to get from La Union to Vigan

INTERNET AND WIFI CONNECTION IN LA UNION

Hotels and other establishments in La Union offer free wifi for guests and tourists . The internet in La Union used to be pretty slow, but recently it become pretty reliable but you can still experience slowness at times. Luckily, the connection improved. You can also get LTE connection with Globe and Smart around La Union.

BEST TIME TO VISIT LA UNION

Like any other place in the Philippines there are two kinds of seasons- the dry season from November to April and the wet season from May to October.

It is recommended that travelers visit during dry season, especially from December to February when temperatures are much cooler and touring will most likely not be interrupted by rains and will not be really hot going around.

DAILY BUDGET TO VISIT LA UNION

For budget or DIY travelers, you’ll surely choose cheaper options especially when it comes to accommodation.

With 1500 PHP, it can be a good budget with food, transportation and accommodation plus entrance fees to some spots since most of them are with donation or free of charge. You can go for local food for 50-70 PHP in local carinderias and around 150 PHP in local restaurants in La Union, where you will find Filipino and Western food.

LA UNION ITINERARY

Day 1 itinerary in la union: going around.

The best way to move around La Union is renting a motorbike you can find them 500-700 PHP for a day. Or you can rent a tricycle for the whole day around 1200 PHP and bringing to all the tourist spots in La Union. If you are coming from Manila we suggest you to take a night bus. So you can start early morning your La Union itinerary.

Visiting the main tourist spots in La Union Ma-Cho Temple, Balay na Bato, Pebble Beach, Baluarte Watchover, Poro Point Lighthouse, Namacpacan Church and finishing your day for the sunset at Urbiztondo Beach. After sunset you have to go out for restaurants and a drink since La Union nightlife is so popular in the Philippines.

MA-CHO TEMPLE

Balay na bato.

One of the tourist spots in La Union is Balay na Bato or Bahay na Bato, or Noble Stone House. It was a rest house that turned into a tourist spot. Balay na Bato is owned by a couple from Baguio and it features a lot of stone sculptures by Vong Kim, a Korean artist. Entrance fee costs less than PHP 50 .

PEBBLE BEACH

In Luna, La Union, locals collect pebbles from the Pebble Beach. They sort out the pebbles and handpick the best ones so they can sell them to other countries. They believe that the beautiful pebbles in La Union won’t run out soon.

BALUARTE WATCHOVER

Baluarte Watchover is located in Pebble Beach in Luna, La Union. This is a mix of modern and old watchover, with the view to the calm sea. If you love taking photos, the door with padlocks is a great background!

PORO POINT LIGHTHOUSE

This lighthouse was an old one, built in 1905 during American occupation in the Philippines. It is 8 meters high and made up of concrete and it also has a gallery but no lantern. Take note that it is not accessible by visitors because it’s located in a military base.

You can just take a photo of the lighthouse for remembrance. However, there are rumors that they will soon develop the lighthouse as a tourist destination. Hopefully, haha!

NAMACPACAN CHURCH

This church houses the image of Our Lady of Namacpacan, a the title given to the Virgin Mary by the natives of La Union. If you are a Catholic who loves church/cathedral hopping, you’ll definitely want to stop by here to offer your prayers and just enjoy the silence of the church.

URBIZTONDO BEACH

The main beach for surfing. You will find shops for renting surfing boards if you want to learn how to surf. Around the area, you will find restaurants and places to stay in La Union depending on your budget and preferences.

NIGHTLIFE IN LA UNION

La Union is one of the most popular provinces for nightlife , apart from surfing. You can go for a beer and dance if you like it. Enjoy the night and socialize with the locals! The option of restaurants is wide, with every restaurant having affordable prices. We enjoyed partying in La Union and meeting new friends.

DAY 2 LA UNION ITINERARY

You can start your day early morning going to Tangadan Falls. Trekking and enjoying a swim can be great for the morning. After this you can pass by Thunderbird Resort where you can get an entrance ticket for your day 500 PHP and you can have 300 PHP consumables for your lunch.

There is a nice pool, great views and there are a few spots to take pictures if you like it. The Resort is popular because is similar to Santorini with the colors white and blue over the place. TANGADAN FALLS

If you are coming from San Juan Beach or San Fernando La Union, you have to ride a jeep to San Gabriel for around 20 PHP . Just mention to the jeepney driver that you are going to Tangadan Falls and he will drop you off in the tricycle terminal where you can get a tricycle for 50 PHP for two people.

The entrance fee for Tangadan Falls is 30 PHP. You can have a guide for 500-600 PHP (good enough for 6-7 people and you can always join a group to share expenses) and they will guide you around the trek for 50-60 minutes to get to Tangadan Falls.

THUNDERBIRD RESORT

You can visit Thunderbird Resort in La Union for spending the whole day. The entrance fee is 500 PHP (300 PHP consumables) for adults and 300 PHP (300 PHP consumables) for kids.

You can enjoy of a swim, casino and walking around the property. It’s a nice place to take pictures around. The food is delicious and you can relax with your smoothie in the pool area. If you like taking pictures, you will feel the vibe of Santorini with the villas and the similar white and blue colors Santorini.

MORE DAYS IN LA UNION ITINERARY

Day 3 la union itinerary.

Apart from relaxing in San Juan Beach or surfing there are also a few plans that you can do. visiting a Grape Farm, Immuki Island, Tapuakan River one of the cleanest in the Philippines and you can also go to Bacnotan only 20 minutes driving from La Union where you can find calm and relaxed beaches. There is a local market in Bacnotan where you can stop for lunch and having fresh juices.

Yes, there are a number of grape farms in La Union. One of the most famous grape farms is in Bauang, La Union. It is called Lomboy Grape Farm , the one believed to be the first grape farm in the Philippines.

Entrance Fee is PHP 100 and PHP 150 for grape picking. It is open from 7AM to 4PM from Monday to Saturday and 7AM to 3:00 PM on Sunday.

IMMUKI ISLAND

This beach has blue-green lagoons and natural pools. It’s just 30 minutes away from San Juan Beach. Immuki is a word derived from the name sea slugs, that can thrive only on dead corals.

TAPUAKAN RIVER

Tapuakan River or Tapuacan River is claimed to be the cleanest Inland River of the northern region of the Philippines. It has crystal clear waters flowing from the mountain top towards the river mainstream.

It’s definitely a must to visit this place. Just remember to bring your own food as there are no nearby restaurants or stores. Also, if you are bringing kids on your trip, be careful as the place is rocky.

BACNOTAN BEACHES

It’s just 10 kilometers North from San Juan Beach where you will find other beaches. Some of them are great for surfing. But if you aren’t a surfer, there are also beaches which are more relaxing where you can just swim, sunbathe or relax at the shore. It’s great to visit Bacnotan beaches at sunset time!

WHERE TO STAY IN LA UNION

Our choice was the luxury stay at Thunderbird Resort where we enjoyed a villa with views to the golf court. We had amazing time at sunset taking pictures, walking around, and just relaxing. It’s inspired by Santorini and it’s great to experience it!

Well, just in case you haven’t gone to Greece yet or you went to Santorini like us and you want to have amazing memories again. And of course, we had amazing time swimming in the pool area since it wasn’t very crowded at that time.

It’s located 5-10 minutes drive away to San Fernando and the area is perfect for resting.

Grace Kim shot a 7-under 64 at Wilshire Country Club to take the first-round lead Thursday in the LPGA Tour’s JM Eagle LA Championship.

Playing in the morning session, the 23-year-old Australian capped her bogey-free round with a chip-in birdie on the par-3 18th.

“Well, I chunked my tee shot on the last hole 20 meters short and then I chipped it in it,” Kim said. “I think that’s pretty cool, in front of everyone.”

Maja Stark of Sweden, Sei Young Kim of South Korea and Chanettee Wannasaen of Thailand were a stroke back at 65. Stark finished second last week outside Houston in The Chevron Championship, two strokes behind top-ranked Nelly Korda.

“I was so tired when I got here,” Stark said. “I barely been practicing. Just did a little bit of what I needed to do. I feel like it’s kind of similar anyway because there are just some pins that you can’t go for just like at Chevron.”

Korda withdrew Monday, a day after her fifth victory in a row.

Grace Kim won the LOTTE Championship last year in a playoff in Hawaii for her first LPGA Tour title. She missed the cut in The Chevron, shooting 76-72.

“If I was to compare my round today to last week, I really focused on just not having too much in my mind,” she said. “I think I over-thought a lot of things through my first and second round last week and struggled a little bit mentally.”

Sei Young Kim had four straight birdies on Nos. 12-15 in her afternoon round. She won the last of her 12 LPGA Tour titles in 2020.

Auston Kim, Haeran Ryu and Nataliya Guseva shot 66, and defending champion Hannah Green matched Amy Yang and Bianca Pagdanganan at 67.

TRIBUNE - En novembre 2023, une résolution du Parlement européen a proposé de modifier les traités pour généraliser la règle de la majorité qualifiée, puis une résolution semblable a été adoptée à l’Assemblée nationale. Cinquante personnalités, dont Arnaud Montebourg et Marcel Gauchet, appellent à organiser un référendum sur ce sujet qui engage la souveraineté de la France.

L’Union européenne n’en finit plus de dériver vers une supranationalité écrasante. D’année en année, la devise « Unis dans la diversité » a cédé sous une centralisation uniformisatrice effaçant les identités et les souverainetés nationales. Tournant le dos à ce qui la fonde, l’Union devient un carcan normatif où l’État de droit n’est brandi que pour justifier l’extension sans limites d’un système autoritaire. Imaginée comme un espace de prospérité où le « doux commerce » et la coopération renforceraient la paix entre les nations, elle est devenue une « prison des peuples » reposant sur des dogmes aveugles qu’il est interdit d’interroger malgré leurs évidents et dramatiques échecs économiques, sociaux et géopolitiques.

Cette dérive est servie par les deux dynamiques sans frein de l’élargissement et de l’approfondissement, le second étant toujours présenté comme indispensable au premier, lui-même inéluctable.

There are only two guarantees for the week ahead in professional golf: Scottie Scheffler and Nelly Korda won't win because they're not playing, Scheffler won his fourth event in five starts on Monday at the RBC Heritage and Korda won her fifth start in a row at the Chevron Championship.

Event: Zurich Classic, Thursday-Sunday, TPC Louisiana.

At stake: $8.9 million purse ($1,286,050 and 400 FedEx Cup points to each member of the winning team).

Defending champions: Davis Riley-Nick Hardy.

TV: Golf Channel (Thursday-Friday, 3:30-6:30 p.m.; Saturday-Sunday, 12:45-2:45 p.m.); CBS (Saturday-Sunday, 3-6 p.m.).
