How to Live La Dolce Vita in Rome

tour magazine roma

Best Time to Go

Things to know, how to get around, best hotels, best restaurants, things to do, best shopping, neighborhoods to know, apps to download.

It famously straddles seven hills, but Rome often feels like several cities. There's the ancient one, of course – the Rome of emperors and amphitheaters, still visible today. Then there's grand, baroque Rome, a city of immense squares, florid churches and fountains, each more spectacular than the next. There's the Dolce Vita vibe, still, in elegant boutiques, bars, and restaurants, and landmark hotels still on Via Veneto. But Rome is also modern, with formerly residential neighborhoods such as Testaccio, Monti, and Ostiense now as attractive to tourists for their nightlife as the classic areas.

It all swirls together into one timeless gumbo. In the space of a day you can go from a Roman emperor's home to a hipster market; you can peel away the layers simply by stepping down into the basement of a church. Of course, all this excess needs some restraint. You should find that in the Vatican; but instead, you'll find Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel there. So when it all gets too much, there are the parks: the Giardino degli Aranci with its sublime views of the dome of St Peter's; the Villa Borghese, whose sprawling grounds contain several museums; and the Via Appia Antica, a Roman road strewn with mausoleums, catacombs, and ancient aqueducts. Even out in nature, Rome can't help but go over the top.

Central European Standard Time

Fall is famously stunning in Rome, known for soft-lit afternoons and a warming sun. To avoid the crowds, go in early-to-mid December — the religious visitors start piling in for the Pope's Christmas address after that — or in January and February.

Capital City: Rome

Trains : Roma Termini is one of the biggest railway stations in the country, perfectly placed on the high-speed lines for fast access to Naples, Florence, Milan, and beyond. Fast direct trains to Fiumicino airport also leave from here.

Buses : Rome has a decent bus network although there's not much coverage in the historic center. It's easy to get out to places just beyond the city walls, such as Testaccio, Piramide, and the Via Appia Antica however. The metro system skims the city center.

Taxis : Taxis are plentiful, with stands at major sites — you can also use the FREE NOW hailing app. Fixed rates are in place for rides from airports Fiumicino and Ciampino, with prices clearly marked on doors.

Car service : Most hotels can arrange transfers; those to and from Fiumicino are normally good value, with prices only a little higher, but with no risk of arguments over fares and supplements at the end.

Alda Fendi paused her fashion career to launch an art foundation; this hotel, which doubles as a gallery, is the next step. Below the Palatine Hill and near the Bocca della Verità (immortalized in Roman Holiday ) it's an 18th-century palazzo stripped to the brick bone and rebuilt by Jean Nouvel. There are mind blowing Palatine views from the terrace, while guests have out-of-hours access to exhibitions located in the hotel.

The staircase is a marble architectural marvel, the ceilings are coffered and the walls are clad in silken damasks. The apartment-sized suites are more modern – so you don't feel like you're sleeping in a museum.

One of the mini hotels that Rome does so well, this former family home now holds six rooms that bring a startling contemporary feel to the cobbled street behind Piazza Navona. 'Floating' beds hover under ancient beams; stark white chairs sit beside a carved fireplace. The tiny breakfast room doubles as a bar.

Address: Piazza della Trinità dei Monti, 6, 00187 Roma RM, Italy Phone: +39 06 699340 Book Now

Everyone from Tom Cruise to Princess Diana have been welcomed to the Hassler by owner Roberto Wirth — incredibly, this world-famous grande dame, perched at the top of the Spanish Steps, is still family-owned and run hands-on. It's a sumptuous, marble-drenched affair as you'd expect from one of Rome's fanciest five stars — its slogan, "stairway to heaven," is no mere PR puff. The seventh-floor, guests-only terrace has once-in-a-lifetime 270-degree views of the Eternal City — with the dome of St Peter's straight ahead, the Spanish Steps unfurling beneath, and seagulls swooping overhead.

Villa Spalletti Trivelli

Address: Via Piacenza, 4, 00184 Roma RM, Italy Phone: +39 06 4890 7934 Book Now

If it feels like you're staying at the home of Roman aristocracy, that's because you are – the Spalletti family opened their home to guests in 2004, and you'll still find their family photos dotted about. Rooms are super-comfy and traditional, but it's the public areas that are the real draw, from the stately drawing rooms to the garden outside and the spectacular hot-tubbed rooftop.

Baglioni Hotel Regina

Address: Via Vittorio Veneto, 72, 00187 Roma RM, Italy Phone: +39 06 421111 Book Now

Lady Gaga is rumored to have stayed here in 2021; back in the day, the buzzing Via Veneto was the heart of the Dolce Vita scene. It may be an art deco grande dame but it's thoroughly modern, with slick décor and neutral palettes. Perched above the city, you'll get panoramic views of Rome from the terrace.

Hotel Locarno

Address: Via della Penna, 22, 00186 Roma RM, Italy Phone: +39 06 361 0841 Book Now

Everyone from Federico Fellini to Rupert Everett has spent time at the art deco Locarno, near the Tiber at the Villa Borghese level. Fifteen Keys

Address: Via Urbana, 6, 00184 Roma RM, Italy Phone: +39 06 4891 3446 Book Now

Villa Laetitia

Address: Lungotevere delle Armi, 22/23, 00195 Roma RM, Italy Phone: +39 06 322 6776 Book Now

Another hotel owned by fashion royalty, this Tiber-side retreat belongs to Anna Fendi. Past the swarthy naked giants on the door, you're through to a chic retreat of dogtooth floors and painted ceilings, all wrapped in an art nouveau palazzo. Pick from a room in the villa itself or the Garden House – an easy stagger from the Michelin-starred restaurant.

Address: Piazza della Trinità dei Monti, 6, 00187 Roma RM, Italy Phone: +39 06 06 6993 4726 Website

This extraordinary Michelin-starred restaurant sprawls over the sixth floor of the iconic Hassler Hotel at the top of the Spanish Steps. The views of the city are incomparable; and the food, by 29-year-old wunderkind Andrea Antonini, matches it. The six-course tasting menu (with multiple amuse bouches) is a stunningly inventive take on traditional Roman and Italian food, from pumpkin flowers stuffed with prawns and spaghetti with mint, pecorino and sea urchin, to a sublime take on Italy's famous rabbit dish, coniglio al cacciatore. Reservations recommended.

Address: Via Urbana, 47, 00184 Roma RM, Italy Phone: +39 06 4788 4006 Website

This is in hipster Monti, and it doesn't disappoint. Locally sourced food with an extra zing – like three types of pepper on the cacio e pepe pasta – it also does take-out pasta (or freshly rolled, if you're staying in an apartment). Reservations recommended.

Address: Via Monte dè Cenci, 9, 00186 Roma RM, Italy Phone: +39 06 6880 6629 Website

Family-owned since 1860, this stalwart of the Jewish Quarter — which dates back over 2,000 years and was behind many of the city's most famous dishes — serves some of Rome's most memorable meals from rich-sauced pasta to the city's famous carciofi alla giuda artichokes. Eat outside on the pedestrianized, cobbled square. Reservations recommended.

Address: Via Labicana, 125, 00184 Roma RM, Italy Phone: +39 06 9761 5109 Website

It's all about the view at Aroma, the rooftop restaurant of Palazzo Manfredi hotel, which looks square onto the Colosseum. It has a retractable roof and glass doors that open up, leaving you to watch circling seagulls in the Colosseum's spotlights. Executive chef Giuseppe di Iorio's tasting menus take you through Roman classics, jazzing them up with modern touches.

Address: Vicolo del Malpasso, 9, 00186 Roma RM, Italy Phone: +39 06 687 7365 Website

Chef Giulio Terrinoni has won a Michelin star for the "striking originality" at his restaurant, 'For Me.' Go for the full 10-course tasting menu at dinner to get a handle on his work; for something more informal, try lunch, where he makes tapas-style "tappi." Reservations recommended.

Agustarello A Testaccio

Address: Via Giovanni Branca, 100, 00153 Roma RM, Italy Phone: +39 06 574 6585 Website

The Testaccio has long been known for its hearty restaurants. This laidback osteria is one of the best – and serves one of the best cacio e pepe in Rome. Don't miss the rosetta ripiena : bread rolls stuffed with pancetta, pecorino and mozzarella.

SantoPalato

Address: Piazza Tarquinia, 4 a/b, 00183 Roma RM, Italy Phone: +39 06 7720 7354 Website

Young chef Sara Cicolini has created an ultra-modern take on the "quinto quarto" – the 'fifth quarter,' or Rome's beloved offal. Unlike more traditional places, here it's jazzed up, so you'll get dishes like a frittata poached around a heart of chicken offal; wagyu heart tartare; and oxtail meatballs with a sauce of peanut and cocoa powder.

Address: Via Guglielmo Calderini, 64, 00196 Roma RM, Italy Phone: +39 06 323 5531 Website

Stanley Tucci raves about the cacio e pepe at this restaurant, run by Japanese chef Kotaro Noda, who's won a Michelin star for his imaginative takes on classic Roman dishes. It's much cheaper than your average high-class restaurant, though; his five-course tasting menus start at just €50 ($60). Reservations recommended.

Roscioli Salumeria con Cucina

Address: Via dei Giubbonari, 21, 00186 Roma RM, Italy Phone: +39 06 687 5287 Website

This is a true Roman institution – a deli-restaurant hybrid using top-quality ingredients. Sit at the counter to watch platters of everything from cold cuts to anchovies being prepared, and try the pizza rossa , straight from the Roscioli family's own bakery. Reservations recommended.

Address: Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, 250, 00186 Roma RM, Italy Phone: +39 06 6813 9022 Website

Ciro Scarmadella is the young chef at the helm of this super-sophisticated Michelin-starred restaurant, but maître d' and host Alessandro Pipero is the one whose name it bears. Try the innovative seven-course Carta Bianca ('carte blanche') tasting menu, or stick with the more traditional à la carte. Reservations recommended.

Flavio al Velavevodetto

Address: Via di Monte Testaccio, 97, 00153 Roma RM, Italy Phone: +39 06 574 4194 Website

This Testaccio restaurant does a mean gricia , cacio e pepe, and amatriciana ; but you're not really here for the food. This is one place you'll want to eat inside, since it's dug into the side of the Monte Testaccio: a grassy hill formed by a Roman rubbish dumb of terracotta amphorae – which you can see through a glass wall in the main room.

Armando Al Pantheon

Address: Salita de' Crescenzi, 31, 00186 Roma RM, Italy Phone: +39 06 6880 3034 Website

Forget the touristy location, right by the Pantheon; this is the real, Roman deal, going back three generations. In a tiny, wood-lined room, and on tables outside, the Bib Gourmand holder serves classic Roman pasta dishes, seared pajata, and the signature dessert – a sour cherry tart. Reservations recommended.

Il Goccetto

Address: Via dei Banchi Vecchi, 14, 00186 Roma RM, Italy Phone: +39 06 9944 8583 Website

There are hundreds of wines (literally – over 800 at the last count) to choose from at this gorgeous, old-timey bar in a building dating back to the 16th century. There's a rotating selection by the glass; pair yours with their extremely elevated bar snacks.

Daniel Gorostieta/Travel + Leisure

Address: Piazza del Colosseo, 1, 00184 Roma RM, Italy Phone: +39 06 3996 7700 Website

All roads famously lead to Rome – and once you get there, sometimes it feels like all roads in Rome go past the Colosseum. The great amphitheater is every bit as spectacular as you imagine – book a ticket that includes a guided tour of the underground area, to see the gateways and holding pens for the animals and gladiators before they were sent out to fight.

Address: Via della Salara Vecchia, 5/6, 00186 Roma RM, Italy Phone: +39 06 3996 7700 Website

The sprawling Roman Forum has several entrances, but start from the one behind Piazza Venezia for the most spectacular route, walking through the grand Arch of Titus and through the ancient city, the Colosseum looming at the other end.

Vatican City

Address: Viale Vaticano Phone: +39 06 6988 4676 Website

A jurisdiction of its own in the middle of Italy, the Vatican dominates Rome. Visit St Peter's basilica — the largest church in the world — to see Michelangelo's "Pietà," a heartrending tribute to motherhood, as well as his giant dome. Leave the best part of a day to explore the Vatican Museums, home to masterpieces such as the ancient sculpture group Laocoön, Raphael's frescoes and, of course, the Sistine Chapel.

Trevi Fountain and Quirinal Hill

Address: Piazza di Trevi, 00187 Roma RM, Italy

Early mornings and late nights are the best time to see the Trevi Fountain, the city's most outrageous monument to the baroque age. While you're there, head up the nearby Quirinal Hill – the highest of the seven – to the grand piazza outside the presidential palace, for superb views.

Villa Borghese

Address: Piazzale Napoleone I, 00197 Roma RM, Italy Phone: +39 06 841 3979 Website

Set within the Villa Borghese gardens – with some of the loveliest grounds in Rome – is this superb art gallery which occupies a grand 17th-century villa. The marble-clad interiors are glorious, but even they're outshone by the contents: a room full of Caravaggios and the hall of lifelike Bernini sculptures for starters.

Mausoleo di Augusto

Address: Piazza Augusto Imperatore, 00186 Roma RM, Italy Website

The mausoleum of Rome's first emperor, Augustus, was once the grandest, highest building in the city. Over the centuries it lost its marble cladding, its roof and much of its elegance, but following a 13-year restoration it reopened to the public in 2021 – ancient Rome's newest site.

Walk the Tiber

The Tiber has one of Europe's loveliest riversides, studded with historical remains and buildings and shaded by trees. The stretch from the Foro Boario – where two ancient temples sit opposite the Bocca della Verità – up to the marble Ponte Sisto, is lovely, passing the grand synagogue and the mid-river island, Isola Tiberina. Or go from the grand Piazza del Popolo, past the Mausoleo di Augusto and the ancient Ara Pacis monument, across the Roman bridge to the Castel Sant'Angelo – the castle-like mausoleum of the emperor Hadrian, which then became the Pope's fortress.

Basilica di San Clemente

Address: Via Labicana, 95, 00184 Roma RM, Italy Phone: + 39 06 774 0021 Website

This church not far from the Colosseum is a prime example of Rome's layered history – and here you'll get to peel back time, tier by tier. The current church is medieval; underneath is an early Christian basilica from the fourth century; and below that is a mithraeum (an ancient Roman temple) and a Roman house.

Baths of Caracalla

Address: Viale delle Terme di Caracalla, 00153 Roma RM, Italy Website

It's just off the tourist map (literally), beyond the Circus Maximus, which means this jaw-dropping Roman bath complex is rarely visited. Wander the sprawling complex to see mosaics still in situ, hulking walls and arches, and – if it's having a special opening – the underground mithraeum.

Le Domus Romane di Palazzo Valentini

Address: Foro Traiano, 85, 00186 Roma RM, Italy Phone: +39 06 2276 1280 Website

This lesser known site has a fantastic sound-and-light show taking you straight back to ancient Rome. Ruined Roman houses in the bowels of a grand palazzo have not only been excavated – so you walk above them on glass floors – but projectors show you how it would have been 2,000 years ago.

Cripta dei Cappuccini

Address: Via Vittorio Veneto, 27, 00187 Roma RM, Italy Phone: +39 06 8880 3695 Website

A memento mori warning to the Dolce Vita set, this church crypt on the famous Via Veneto houses the remains of 3,700 bodies – assumed to be capuchin monks. But it isn't gruesome – the bones and skulls have been arranged artistically, into altarpieces, chandeliers, and even a Grim Reaper skeleton brandishing a scythe.

Giardino degli Aranci

Address: Piazza Pietro D'Illiria, 00153 Roma RM, Italy Phone: +39 06 6710 5457

Follow the avenue of skinny pine trees to watch the sun set over St Peter's. This lovely little park atop the Aventine hill has prime views of the city skyline – and points straight towards Michelangelo's famous dome.

Via Condotti

Address: Via dei Condotti

This street – the flashiest in Rome – offers world-class window-shopping. Most designers have branches on Via Condotti (technically Via dei Condotti, though it's never referred to as such) and its cobbled side streets.

Laura Bosetti Tonatto

Address: Via dei Coronari, 57, 00186 Roma RM, Italy Phone: +39 06 686 4224 Website

Italy's best known 'nose' and parfumier to the great and good including the Queen of England, Laura has created dozens of exclusive perfumes and scents at her laboratory on trendy Via dei Coronari.

Ape Camiceria Artigianale

Address: Via di Pallacorda, 1, 00186 Roma RM, Italy Phone: +39 06 689 2401 Website

Master tailor Piero Albertelli made elegant clothes for royals and celebrities across the globe. Although he passed away in 2018, his team continues, making made-to-measure shirts, coats and sweaters. There's a ready-to-wear collection, too.

Address: Via dei Coronari, 197, 00186 Roma RM, Italy Phone: +39 06 6871645 Website

Lisa Corti was born and brought up in Ethiopia, and she pays homage to her upbringing with her bright, highly patterned textiles. You'll find everything from throws and curtains to tablecloths and bed covers; as well as interiors there's also a collection of kaftans and kurtas.

Mondelliani

Address: Via dei Prefetti, 11, 00186 Roma RM, Italy Phone: +39 06 679 3481 Website

This eyeglass brand has been going strong since 1961, and it shows in the retro designs. You'll find bright colors, the odd leopard print and even octagonal frames – they're design objects in themselves.

Ferdinando Codognotto

Address: Via dei Pianellari, 14, 00186 Roma RM, Italy Phone: +39 335 824 0400 Website

Artists and artisans tend to have been squeezed out of the city center in recent years. Wood sculptor Ferdinando Codognotto is one of those who remains – his extraordinary works of art can be seen around the city, while his workshop is on a cobbled street behind Piazza Navona.

Address: Via dei Chiavari, 39, 00186 Roma RM, Italy Phone: +39 06 6830 7297 Website

Elisa Nepi handcrafts brightly colored bags, made from vegetable-dyed Tuscan leather (which she personally selects). Try her two-tone satchels, over-shoulder bags and wallets.

La Grotta Dipinta

Address: Via dei Chiavari, 73, 00186 Roma RM, Italy Phone : +39 339 272 5780 Website

Step back in time into this mosaic workshop, where pots of tesserae line the shelves and ancient designs are propped up against the walls. Artisans Tiziana Ferraresi and Francesca Nicosia split the large tesserae over a spiked tree stump – just as the ancient Romans used to do. They teach mosaic classes, too.

Address: Via di S. Pantaleo, 68-69, 00186 Roma RM, Italy Phone: +39 06 6880 2547 Website

'Strategic Business Unit' isn't the most authentically Italian-sounding name, but these slick jeans, button-downs and t-shirts bear all the hallmarks of Bel Paese fashion. The ultra-soft denim comes from Japan, though it's tailored in Italy.

Address: Le Tartarughe Eat & Drink, Piazza Mattei, 00186 Roma RM, Italy Phone: +39 392 413 2158 Website

Rita Salvadori grows 80,000 chili pepper plants on her biodynamic Tuscan farm, including some of the spiciest strains on the planet. They're sold here, at this great little café and deli – try her chilli-laced salt and jam.

Trastevere : On the Vatican side of the Tiber – the Ponte Sisto bridge is the entrance point – Trastevere is one of the center's trendiest neighborhoods, with exceptional restaurants and buzzing bars alongside quiet lanes and cobblestone streets that feel far from a city. This has always been an area of artists and artisans, and there's still a boho feel to the air.

Testaccio : A port of ancient Rome, this Tiber-side district south of the city center used to be best known as the location for the city's slaughterhouse. Today, that slaughterhouse hosts modern art exhibitions, and there's a slew of trendy bars straddling this and Ostiense, the district next door. As a working class area, its restaurants have always been top-notch.

Monti : Hipsters love Monti, the former down-at-heel neighborhood sitting between Termini railway station and the Colosseum. Back in ancient times, this was the Suburra (slums); more recently it was the Red Light district. But in the last couple of decades, its cobblestone streets have been transformed by artisans, bars, and boutique stores, making it Rome's nightlife capital, spiraling off from Piazza della Madonna dei Monti.

Vatican City : This is of course the seat of the Catholic faith, and life revolves around the church here in the Vatican, an independent city stage within Rome. You're here for the museums and St Peter's Basilica of course, but there are other finds, such as the Auditorium Conciliazione concert hall and its chic Chorus Caffe.

Campitelli : If you're here for all things ancient, this is where you'll spend most of your time. Campitelli is home to the most famous parts of ancient Rome, including the Forum, the Palatine, and the Campidoglio; the Colosseum skims its edge.

Campo Marzio : If you're looking to splash some cash, you'll want Campo Marzio. One of the most ancient areas of Rome, it pairs sites such as the Mausoleo di Augusto and the Ara Pacis with the chic shopping streets around Via Condotti and the Spanish Steps, and finishes at Via del Corso, where you'll find the high-street stores.

Fall in Rome is spectacular – so much so that there's a name for the city's warm and sunny October days: ottobrata , where temperatures can hit the 70s in the sun. Winters are mild, although January temperatures can plummet to the 40s, and it can rain. Spring, like fall, is a beautiful time to go, with trees in blossom and temperatures in the 60s. Summer is hot and humid – so much so that most Romans abandon the city for the month of August.

Rome Travel Guide

It's been centuries since this gorgeous tumble of ancient and Renaissance buildings ruled the world, but Rome still captivates in a way few cities elsewhere can. Today, we come here as much for the cacio pepe in Testaccio and to wander the lanes of Monti, as we do the Pantheon which is as impressive on your first visit as it is your 30th. Doesn't hurt, either, that the cocktail bars now give Paris's a run for their Euro.

The essential guide to rome.

Whether you’re a first-time or repeat visitor, Rome — the Eternal City — never ceases to inspire and captivate. Its historic center, with its arts and cultural riches, from the ancient Romans through the Renaissance and Baroque eras, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980.

Visit such iconic sites as the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon — but don’t stop there. Venture beyond to access the roots of the romanità : visit the Capitoline Museums, the oldest public museums in the world, which preserve the memory of Ancient Rome; see the Ara Pacis and Domus Area, archaeological sites that have been restored and enhanced thanks to multimedia technologies; enjoy a quiet walk in the city's beautiful parks, such as Villa Borghese, Villa Doria Pamphilj and the Appia Antica, and discover Rome’s more contemporary side at the Zaha Hadid-designed MAXXI and at Macro, the Museum of Contemporary Art.

Best times to visit Rome

Rome is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Italy and Europe. If you wish to avoid huge crowds, travel between late October and early April, when room rates are also lower. High season is typically from Easter to September, plus Christmas and New Year. This is when you’ll find the city at its most crowded and higher hotel rates. In terms of weather, Rome, thanks to its Mediterranean climate, can be visited year round. Spring and fall are the most pleasant seasons to visit. July and August can be hot, while January and February are the coldest months, although at a still acceptable 10-12°C during the day. Temperatures rarely go below 0°C.

Traveling to Rome: how to get there

For many international visitors, Rome is often the first (or last) stop on an Italy itinerary. This means you’ll arrive at or depart from Fiumicino Airport.

Rome has two international airports: Leonardo da Vinci/Fiumicino International Airport (FCO), which is Rome's main airport and the one used for intercontinental flights; and Ciampino International Airport, located to the southeast of the capital and served by low-cost airlines such as EasyJet and Ryanair.

Fiumicino is connected to the city center by public transportation. The cheapest option is the bus, with tickets approximately €6 per person for a 50-minute ride in light traffic.

The non-stop Leonardo Express train is slightly more expensive at €14, but you’re guaranteed to reach Termini train station in only 32 minutes, with departures every 15 minutes.

The most expensive but also the easiest option is the taxi, which will take you directly to your hotel. It costs a flat rate of €48 during the day (€53 at night) and takes about 40 minutes to reach Rome if traffic cooperates.

The main train station in Rome is Termini , served by hundreds of trains every day, including Frecciarossa and Italo high-speed trains. The secondary train station is Tiburtina, also served by high-speed and local trains.

We advise against driving in Rome and if you are getting into the centro storico by car, check with your hotel for the need to have a driving permit as the center has many ‘limited traffic zones’, or ZTL.

*Check our ultimate guide to train travel in Italy .

How to get around in Rome

Expect to walk a lot. One of the joys of a visit to Rome is to wander its streets, neighborhoods and piazzas to immerse yourself in the local life. Most of Rome’s attractions are located in the city center and are easy to reach on foot.

If you need to reach farther away places, such as Vatican City or the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano (one of the four papal basilicas of Rome ), consider taking the metro, which is quicker and more reliable than surface transport.

Two main metro lines serve the center: A (orange) and B (blue), intersecting at Stazione Termini (Rome’s main train station), where both have a stop. Metro trains run between 5:30am and 11:30pm and to 1:30am on Fridays and Saturdays.

Take line A for the Trevi Fountain (Barberini), Spanish Steps (Spagna) and St. Peter’s (Ottaviano-San Pietro). Take line B for the Colosseum (Colosseo). Tickets can be purchased at metro stations, newsstands and tabaccaio stores. If you’re planning to use public transport regularly, consider buying a few tickets at a time or day/week passes.

Driving in Rome is not recommended (nor needed). Most of Rome’s historic center is closed to unauthorized traffic during the day. A car may be useful for a trip out of town, but consider that many places can be reached by public transport. For example, if you wish to visit Villa d’Este in Tivoli, there is a local train and bus service.

Insider tips

  • Whenever possible, book your tickets for museums and monuments in advance. Booking online will cost a few extra euros, but it will allow you to enter through a different line from those without a ticket, saving you time. This is especially true for the Vatican Museums, Colosseum and other super popular sites.
  • Rome’s state-owned museums, galleries, archaeological sites, parks and gardens are free to enter on the first Sunday of each month. As you may expect, on those Sundays they’re popular with locals, too, so plan to show up early or visit one of the lesser-known sites.
  • Many of Rome’s city and state-owned museums, like Galleria Borghese and Palazzo Barberini, are closed on Mondays. The Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel are closed on Sundays so they tend to be crowded on Saturdays and Mondays; try to visit Tuesday through Friday. They’re free to enter the last Sunday of the month.

What to see in Rome

There is no shortage of things to see and do in Rome. You’ll be strolling the same streets as gladiators, popes and legendary artists did, amid archaeological sites, Baroque fountains, ancient churches, Renaissance palaces, incredible museums, parks and gardens with beautiful views, and even the catacombs.

Rome repeatedly makes lists of the most desirable cities to visit in the world, and it’s no wonder: it’s got something for everyone, whether you’re an archaeology buff, a Renaissance lover, a Baroque enthusiast, a history and art lover or a foodie.

The Vatican Museums boast some of the world’s most renowned Roman sculptures and most important masterpieces of Renaissance art, amassed by the Catholic Church and the papacy throughout the centuries. They include the Sistine Chapel, with its ceiling and altar walls decorated by Michelangelo, and the Stanze di Raffaello.

The Capitoline Museums constitute the oldest public museum in the world, founded in 1471 by Pope Sixtus IV. They contain many ancient Roman statues, inscriptions, and other artifacts, as well as the iconic Capitoline Wolf.

The Galleria Borghese houses the impressive Borghese collection of paintings, sculpture and antiquities begun by Cardinal Scipione Borghese with works by artists of the caliber of Bernini and Caravaggio.

Archaeological sites

Traces of the ancient Roman civilization are everywhere in the city: from the Colosseum, the largest ancient amphitheater ever built, where gladiators fought beasts and each other for the entertainment of the Romans, to the Roman Forum, which contains the ruins of several buildings that once formed the heart of ancient Rome; from the Domus Aurea, Nero’s imperial palace, to the Baths of Caracalla, the city's second-largest Roman public baths. In Rome, you can travel back to the time of the ancient Roman Empire, and better grasp its long-lasting influence on Western civilization.

Rome has four papal basilicas, the most famous of which is of course St. Peter’s (in the Vatican, home of the Pope) with its famous La Pietà statue by Michelangelo and 137-meter-high dome. The other three are Santa Maria Maggiore, San Giovanni in Laterano (the Cathedral of Rome) and San Paolo Fuori le Mura.

The city has hundreds of churches. Other notable ones include Santa Maria in Trastevere, one of the oldest in Rome, with impressive mosaics; Santa Maria del Popolo, which contains works by Renaissance artists the likes of Pinturicchio, Raphael, Bernini and Caravaggio, and San Clemente near the Colosseum, which is interesting because you can see the different layers of history, from pagan temple to medieval church.

Maybe parks are not the first attraction that comes to mind when planning a visit to Rome, but the city has many beautiful ones, often with pretty views, and interesting histories — and most of them free! The most famous is Villa Borghese, with leafy lanes and the magnificent Galleria Borghese. The Vatican Gardens are splendid, though they’re only accessible by guided tour. The Gianicolo boasts a superb viewpoint over Rome’s rooftops and the Appia Antica Park is best explored on a bike, pedaling along the well-preserved ancient Roman road. You can also visit some catacombs. In spring, stop by the Botanical Gardens and the Roseto Rose Gardens to see the flowers in bloom.

What to eat in Rome

When in Rome, eat as the Romans do. Traditional Roman cuisine is hearty and seasonal, based on rural and peasant traditions.

The most famous pastas to try include the iconic Bucatini all’amatriciana , Pasta alla gricia , Spaghetti alla carbonara , and  Spaghetti cacio e pepe . Second courses are not for the queasy stomach; besides Saltimbocca alla romana , a veal dish, we have Coda alla vaccinara , a classic of  cucina romana povera , made from oxtail; and Quinto quarto , the offal of butchered animals. Not a dish in itself, it’s used in many recipes of Roman cuisine, for example  trippa alla romana ,  pajata ,  coratella  and  testarelle .

On a lighter note, the most famous vegetable of Roman cuisine is the artichoke, with the classic Carciofi alla giudia  or  Carciofi alla romana.  If you want to eat them fresh, then stick to the months from February to May.  Puntarelle (chicory sprouts) salad is a typical side dish. A classic street food that is the Romans’ version of granita is called Grattachecca .

Where to stay in Rome

There is no shortage of places to stay in Rome, from the most luxurious five-star hotels to charming B&Bs to cheap hostels. The area around Termini train station , while a bit run-down, works well if you’re on a budget and you want to be close to the center. Trendy Monti is well-positioned, near major attractions such as the Colosseum and is lively at night, with bars and restaurants. Trastevere, on the Tiber's west bank, is one of Rome's most charming neighborhoods with its cobbled alleyways, independent shops, restaurants and bars open late at night. The Spanish Steps area is very elegant, with more expensive accommodation and a perfect location to explore the city center, just as Piazza Navona and the Pantheon, which allow you to be in the midst of it all. Testaccio, while not particularly picturesque, is the place to be for foodies, with its restaurants kicking off new food trends, and for night owls, thanks to its many bars.

My name is Simona, I graduated in History of Art and for several years I have had the privilege of the most beautiful job in the world: being a tour guide. I was born in Trastevere, in the heart of Rome, but my passion for travelling led me to travel the world, including in Spain and New York, where I lived for a time. I love getting lost in the streets of my city, discovering each time a different detail, a glimpse, a smell, a new story to tell. I love photography, 50’s rock, to play the saxophone and to dance swing. I love the sound of the steps on the old marble of an ancient church and the coolness of the Colosseum’s underground. But above all I love my job, to share my passion, to revive each time through the eyes of the people a wonder for the beauty around us and to share with them this wonder as if it was the first time for me too.

The Pantheon is one of the most breathtaking buildings in Rome and you’ll get to discover it with your Local Specialist. You can’t miss visiting the national museum of this ancient city, and you’ll love exploring this superb collection of classical art, archeological artifacts and treasures of the Renaissance. Cacio e Pepe

Made with only four ingredients, cacio e pepe is the ultimate pasta dish of Rome. The cacio (sheep’s milk cheese), pepe (black pepper), and cheese (ideally Pecorino and Parmesan), meld with the pasta to create a rich, creamy sauce that is utterly blissful. Once a simple shepherd’s dish, cacio e pepe is now the most elegant pasta dish you’ll ever taste.

Pizza al Taglio

You’ll find some of the world’s best street food in Rome in the form of pizza al taglio. This delicious snack is baked in rectangular trays and sold by the slice in little cafés and hole-in-the-wall places. No trip to Rome is complete without a stop at traditional gelateria. More than just ice cream, this iconic Italian dessert is a fine art in Rome, made with seasonal flavors and the freshest natural ingredients. In Rome, New Food and Old Sites Beckon

The Eternal City continues to live up to its name, thanks to some long-awaited reopenings and a crop of new restaurants and cultural spots all over town.

tour magazine roma

By Seth Sherwood

With masking and vaccination requirements largely dropped in Italy and summer approaching, crowds of travelers have begun to return to Rome’s Centro Storico — the area most dependent on tourism and the hardest hit by the pandemic — according to hoteliers and others working near Rome’s iconic spots.

“Trevi Square and the whole center of Rome is full of tourists again,” said Fabrizio Rezza, reservations manager for the Hotel Fontana , referring to the throngs around the storied monument in front of the hotel, Trevi Fountain. “It seems like no one is afraid of Covid any longer.”

And so the Eternal City continues to live up to its name, boosted by some long-awaited reopenings and a crop of new restaurants, hotels and cultural spots all over town.

Museums and archaeological sites

Under renovation since 2007, the distinctive circular Mausoleum of Augustus (5-euro admission) began welcoming the public again last year, and the Casa Romana, a 4th-century dwelling beneath the free Museo di Scultura Antica Giovanni Barracco , has also reopened after an even longer hiatus.

Among Rome’s fledgling cultural venues, the new Museo Ninfeo offers visitors the chance to admire the ruins of a former hideaway and pleasure garden for emperors like Claudius and Caligula. (The museum is open Saturday and Sunday only. An adult ticket costs 14.30 euros and can be purchased through Vivaticket .) The just-opened (and free) Garum museum (named after an ancient Roman fish sauce) traces the history of Italian cooking and eating. Housed in a 16th-century palazzo, the new museum showcases centuries-old utensils, vessels, molds and other cookware, as well an extensive library of books and prints related to the culinary arts.

Italy has also reintroduced free admission for state museums and archaeological sites on the first Sunday of each month. At all other times, certain popular tourist sites, notably the Colosseum site (which includes the Forum and Palatine Hill; 16 euros) and Galleria Borghese (13-euros admission; free for those 17 and under), require tickets to be purchased online.

Vast buffet of new restaurants

Over the past two years, many beloved restaurants in Rome had been forced to shutter, such as Michelin-starred Metamorfosi, the panoramic hilltop Lo Zodiaco, and Doozo, considered by some to have been Rome’s best Japanese restaurant.

But fittingly for a food-centric city, Rome’s red-hot dining scene is serving up a vast buffet of new restaurants, from thin-crust pizzerias awash in craft beer ( L’Elementare ), to gourmet delis abounding in prosciutto platters and grilled meats ( Aventina ), to natural-wine boutiques with an ace selection of Italian dishes served from an open kitchen at the back ( Enoteca l’Antidoto ).

Some of the most-sought new tables are at Romanè , the new restaurant from the celebrity chef and restaurateur Stefano Callegari, famous as the inventor of the trapizzino, a cone-like bread container that can be filled with anything from eggplant parmigiana to beef tongue in green sauce. Loud, friendly and unpretentious, Romanè serves up reverent and occasionally embellished takes on classic Italian cuisine, including crackly fried artichoke, spaghetti Amatriciana and “the best chicken cacciatore I ever ate in my life,” in the words of the food journalist and olive-oil specialist Luciana Squadrilli. Expect to pay around 60 euros for a three-course meal for two people.

Hotels: luxury and kitsch

The lack of tourists also hurt the accommodations sector, which has suffered some of the worst losses. According to Giorgio Palmucci, president of ENIT, the national tourism agency, around 400 regional hotels have closed during the pandemic. They include giants like the Sheraton Hotel Roma and Conference Center and the Selene, which had hosted luminaries like the former Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev.

Despite significant losses, the hotel sector is starting to rebound, thanks to recent arrivals like the luxurious W Rome (rates in May from 720 euros) and the kitsch-cool Mama Shelter Roma (rates in May from 289 euros), with its roof bar, co-working space and plant-draped restaurant. For particularly fat wallets, the Maalot Roma (rates in May from 423 euros) is a hushed townhouse blending contemporary artworks and historical furnishings (tufted couches, oriental carpets) that has been earning raves for the plush Don Pasquale restaurant. While waiting for your table, you can sit at the intimate two-seat bar and sip the excellent signature cocktail, Almost a Classic Drink (14 euros), which enlightens a traditional Vieux Carré with a dose of grappa.

For slimmer billfolds and more Scandinavian tastes, the new 55-room Camplus Hotel Roma Centro (rates in May from 123 euros) is a haven of clean lines and muted colors near the city’s central rail station, Termini.

Pizza labs, Patti Smith and other summer events

Looking ahead, a host of summer festivals are set to unfold around Rome, with some returning after a pandemic-era pause. In late May, around 60 master pizza chefs will knead, toss and bake their way into the hearts (and stomachs) of those attending the free La Città della Pizza . The festival celebrates Italy’s most famous food in its many permutations — Neapolitan, Roman, folded, fried — as well as bread and olive oil, and a free “pizza school” will offer further indoctrination into the art of the pie. You can then wash it all down in mid-June with some of the 2,500 Italian and international vintages on hand at Vinoforum (20 euros admission), the city’s big annual wine and spirits gala.

On the musical front, the citywide, multiweek concert series known as Rock in Roma (most shows 20 to 40 euros) makes its return in June after a two-year hiatus. Held at large venues around town — notably the ancient Circus Maximus — this year’s series will feature Italian and international performing artists like Patti Smith, Massive Attack, Herbie Hancock, Suicidal Tendencies and Maneskin.

Important coronavirus information

The Italian government has lifted the country’s state of emergency and recently eliminated many of the former regulations, though proof of vaccination or recovery from Covid-19 is still required to enter Italy from a foreign country. Within Italy, such proof is no longer required to enter nearly all venues, and masks are no longer mandatory in the vast majority of indoor spaces. The notable exceptions are public transportation and enclosed entertainment venues — including movie theaters, playhouses, and concert halls — which require FFP2-type masks ( similar to N95 and KN95 models ). Current health guidelines can be found on the official Italia tourism website.

A TOUR to discover the other MICHELANGELO of ROME

Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio , best known as simply CARAVAGGIO, was not only a painter, but a “star”!

His adventurous life, full of sensational events, and his revolutionary style made him an undisputed leading figure of the Italian art: you can find out everything about on our Caravaggio Tour.

He came to Rome in 1597-98 in search of fame and died at the young age of forty in exile, banished by the Pope after committing murder. Caravaggio lived a short, dramatic life and knew the city of Rome in all its aspects, including the violent, sketchy and dangerous ones.

Our guides are art historians and experts of Rome and they’ll show you Caravaggio’s paintings, a few hidden in some of the most beautiful churches in Rome…

You will hear the stories about his  friends , his  loves , the  models  he chose among the poorest in the city, his  favorite restaurants  and much more!

The works of Caravaggio are in the most important museums in the world such as the  Louvre in Paris , the  National Gallery in London  and the  Borghese Gallery in Rome , where six are displayed. For  this tour you won’t have to pay for any entrance tickets  or visit any museum…you will see the Caravaggio works that are still exhibited in the places for which they were originally painted: three magnificent churches!

The first is St. Louis de France just a few steps from the famous Piazza Navona.

This district is where Caravaggio was often involved in fights and quarrels. Here in the church you will find three of his paintings: the  Stories of St. Matthew  in the famous  Contarelli Chapel .

Our expert guides will reveal to you the secrets of his realism and unique skill, like the light breaking through his dark backgrounds, a light that shocked his contemporaries… an earth-shattering novelty!

The second church, St. Augustin, is only a few steps away.

At the height of his success a woman, Orinzia Trestles, commissioned Caravaggio to paint a work for her family chapel: the famous  Madonna of the Pilgrims . Our guides will tell you the stories behind the complicated negotiations which ended with the creation of a unique, unexpected work: some of the characters represented have  big dirty feet and dirty garments. .. in a Church! Such a scene was certainly not easily accepted by the rich people of those times! Book your walking tour “…on the trail of Caravaggio” to find out what happened after the inauguration…

The third and final church we shall visit in the Caravaggio Tour is a monument in itself: beautiful Santa Maria del Popolo*.

  • Along with works by  Raphael, Sebastiano del Piombo  and  Gianlorenzo Bernini , the church retains, in the  Cerasi Chapel,  two works of Michelangelo Merisi da  Caravaggio :  St. Paul’s Conversion  and the  Crucifixion of   St. Peter . These are two incredibly  realistic paintings  and not at all in line with the iconography of his days! Would you believe that in the Conversion of St. Paul a horse occupies a larger space than the saint himself? This is just one of the many questions our guides will answer! Realism, audacity, talent, love and the tragic life of this genius will turn you on to the Rome of the 1600s, we are sure you will want to know even more!

Rome is an open-air museum, yes, we mean it, and thanks to this tour you can appreciate it too!

* From mid June 2023 to Novembre 2024,   the Cerasi Chapel in Santa Maria del Popolo will be closed to the public for a major restoration . Therefore, 2 paintings by Caravaggio normally included in the tour will not be visible.

You will not have to stand in line, pay tickets or stay indoors, to discover the wonders of art because … they are all around you!

Just get the right guide! Our guides will show them to you and will share our love for their astonishing beauty with you! Start discovering Caravaggio:  here is a post on our blog about him. Have fun!

Skip-the-Line Colosseum Tour

Breeze past the crowds and access the special entrance for small group tours at the Colosseum. As you enter this ancient Roman structure, your passionate local guide will take you back in time with stories of the gruesome fights and epic spectacles that once happened here. You’ll explore the first and second tiers of the Colosseum—areas that were originally reserved only for Rome’s most elite classes.

Learn how the Colosseum was built and the history of the bloody battles that defined ancient Roman history. You’ll only spend an hour inside of the Colosseum, which is perfect for those who want to cover the most ground in less time.

This product includes an entry ticket to the Colosseum, Forum, and Palatine Hill, for which our cost is 18 Euro per person.

Guided Tour of Palatine Hill

Next, your guide will take you to the site where Romulus is said to have founded the city in 753 B.C. This area is comprised of opulent ancient palaces that are still characterized by their detailed artifacts and mosaics. These palaces weren’t just the homes of Rome’s most elite, they were enormous treasure troves with every possible luxury inside. In fact, the Palace of Domitian even had an amphitheater inside of it, large enough to host chariot races! Here, you'll also see a piece of an ancient Roman aqueduct.

Ancient Roman Forum

Finally, you'll visit what we like to call downtown ancient Rome. Ever watch a movie that takes place in ancient Rome, and you see people walking around a busy marketplace? That’s the Forum. This ancient site is where all of the action happened. From senate meetings to poetry performances and political protests, the Roman Forum really was the cultural hub of ancient Rome. Your guide will give you an insight into what life was like here, as you stroll around admiring historic structures including the Arch of Titus and the Temple of Julius Caesar.

Tour really amizing, the driver and tour guid, food and location was very good, but a first day and last day hotel accomodation is not good very small shower, the bed is like rocking, the last tour scheduled from vasilica to collesium there no travelling car and is not good for us to take a taxi by our own and some a taxi driver is not honest.

Eva was a great tour guide leader. She went above and beyond to help me schedule a transfer to the airport at the end of our tour .This is a very fast paced tour. I was amazed at how many things were efficiently scheduled. Everything was very organized and on time.. The hotels were 4 star quality, clean and quiet. breakfast were also great with hot entrées and continental selections. We had a great vacation and would not hesitate to use this company again.

When we first arrived and all the list and instructions were in Spanish, I began to worry that I had ruined our family vacation. But to my surprise Claudia came to the rescue. She made sure that she gave the tour in Spanish and English for the small group of us in the group. And towards the end she went out of her way to get the English group their own guide. I believe that saved our whole vacation. So thanks Claudia.

Italy City Break - 5 Days Tour

Italy City Break - 5 Days

Overall, great tour. However, at some points we were left in the middle of nowhere and were asked to find our way back to the hotel. As example, we were asked to find our way from Venice center to our hotel. Several people got lost and went through too many changes to find the hotel. The lunch and dinner were low quality and could be improved.

UNESCO Jewels: Best of Italy - Rome, Florence, Venice in 8 days Tour

UNESCO Jewels: Best of Italy - Rome, Florence, Venice in 8 days

It was an amazing experience and we are so glad we went! In the beginning (after booking) communication from the tour operator was a little lacking. I had to keep reaching out to them and didn't get replies right away. After we got to Italy everything went smoothly and we were satisfied with everything. The hotel in Rome was great. The other hotels were not bad but they were not quite as nice or as updated as the hotel in Rome. It was a little confusing at first because we booked with I Love Rome as the tour operator but then on our second day we were with Carrani Tours so I think we got combined with another tour group. The tour was great and the local tour guides were awesome. We learned and saw so much. Wonderful experience!

UNESCO Jewels: Best of Italy - Rome, Florence, Venice in 5 days

We had a blast! We had the tour organized by Fantasia by Carrani tour. It was great! Clara was an amazing guide. She explained everything and was a fun guide. She knew a lot about all the sites that we visited. She also gave us tips on where to go during our free time, which was amazing. It was a nice experience for first time travellers to Italy. The meals can be improved, but they were not our main concern. The hotels that were booked were pretty great and in safe areas that were close to the city centres and close to transportation. I highly recommend booking this tour if it is your first time in Europe.

Rome City Break - 3 Days/2 Nights Tour

Rome City Break - 3 Days/2 Nights

((REVIEW IS FOR VENICE CITY BREAK, WHICH WAS NOT LISTED AS AN OPTION)) I (32 year old solo male traveler from NJ, USA, attorney by trade) had the distinct pleasure of dealing with Veronica from Italy on a Budget when I travelled to Italy this past July/August 2021. She was personable, knowledgeable, above-and-beyond helpful, responsive, and was absolutely instrumental in making my Italian vacation as great as it was. Before my trip, she helped as I had to reshuffle my plans due to my changing personal calendar as well as the effect of Covid on travel, and she patiently answered all of my questions over the phone and via chat in a straightforward manner. I also had various specific requests of how I wanted my trip to be personalized (adding certain activities to the itinerary, adding a day, upgrading my hostel stay), and she was able to complete every one. While in Italy, she kept in contact with me to ensure that I was happy with the trip, and she even provided helpful tips when I independently travelled to other parts of Italy outside of my Italy on a Budget itinerary. She deserves a 12/10. I cannot recommend her highly enough.

Italian Discovery Tour

Italian Discovery

This was my second trip with Eskapas , the first was to Greece and it was wonderful. Italian Discovery trip was very interesting and covered most of sites I wanted to visit. Visited many very historic sites, cities, monuments and many amazing structures such as the Vatican, Rome fountains, Leaning tower of Pisa, so many structures and areas it is hard to name them all, but all amazing. The size of the group was around 35 people and it was winter. Italian cities are full of tourists even in the winter. A few days it was rainy but it didn't bother us a lot. The accommodation, sightseeing were good, and the pizza in Naples was our favorite. Our tour leader Mario was full of energy and explained a lot in the bus. Guides in the cities rushed a lot. I guess they had other group appointment after us. Our driver Tao was top! He was fun and has always been smiling. The only inconvenience the group was too big and some of the customers were rude and taking all the same seats. Overall it is a 5-star experience.

Sorrento, Pompei, Amalfi and Positano: 4 days escape from Rome Tour

Sorrento, Pompei, Amalfi and Positano: 4 days escape from Rome

Great way to see alot over a short period of time. Would have liked to see better communication between tour operator and us. At time's we felt unsure about where to be. If it's your first time to any of these area's I would recommend taking a city tour while you are there. We did this in Sorrento and really got alot more understanding of the area. Overall it was a good tour just remember that this is not a hand held tour, you are on your own for parts of it.

What people love about Rome Tours

The tour itself was amazing! A lot of value for money. The tour guide did seem to be a bit annoyed at us at the end when we wanted to get transport back to the hotel, after walking over half a marathon. This is notable considering a few members had lower body injuries/ health concerns. Other than that, I really loved my trip. I made friends for life, memories I’ll cherish for years
Did the Classic Italy tour with my 90 year old mum. Eva our tour guide is very helpful and funny.I think Rome needs to be 2 days. Roman Forum and Batican and walking tour in a day is just too much.
