Legian in Moving Frames

An exploration of the wondrous labuan bajo, borobudur - the grand temple, mandalika - where the waves collide, likupang - escape to the new world, the heartbeat of toba, what they say, romantic bandung - the paris of java.

Well, I just love Bali so much, and we fell in love with the culture, people, the food. Everything was just amazing. I feel like in Bali, you can find serenity anywhere, literally. It's our favorite place that we've been to on our entire trip.

Legian is a beachfront town in South Bali , north of Kuta and south of Seminyak . Stretching north from Kuta, Legian offers the same easy access to shops and bars but a slightly more relaxed and less chaotic feeling. It is a low-key area where you can still get the low prices of Kuta without some of the hassle. The northern area of Legian bordering Seminyak offers a bit of an escape from the crowds and is also a popular surf beach.

Understand [ edit ]

Orientation [ edit ]

This is a small area fronting the beach which stretches from Jalan Melasti (where Kuta ends), north to Jalan Arjuna (better known as Jalan Double Six) where Seminyak begins. Most of the popular Legian hotels are on or close to the beach. The whole of Legian is no bigger than a few blocks in a large city, but despite its small size, this area has a very high profile with visitors due to the lovely beach frontage, and proliferation of mid-market hotels.

The most popular stretch of Legian Beach is at the bottom of Jalan Padma, and is sometimes called Padma Beach. It is more relaxed than Kuta, has a better and less crowded surf break, and is home to many nice vendors selling beers under umbrellas. There is easy parking here for Rp 1,000 per motorbike.

There is a long north-south road between the beachfront hotels and the beach, which is only open for authorised vehicles when there is a ceremony being held. Otherwise it is a well paved footpath, and makes for an excellent walking route, allowing users an easy beach-side stroll along to restaurants, bars and nightclubs on Double Six Beach.

The main road is Jalan Legian which can get very jammed indeed. All roads to the beach run westwards, more or less perpendicular to Jalan Legian.

Get in [ edit ]

The airport is located south of Legian and a taxi or car journey from there will take about will take about 20 minutes. A pre-paid coupon taxi fare from the airport is Rp 55,000.

Kuta and Seminyak are either side of Legian and you can walk, drive or bike in from both those areas.

Get around [ edit ]

Most of Legian can be covered on foot if you are not in a hurry, but taxis are plentiful as are motorbike rental outlets. Expect to pay Rp 50,000 to 80,000 per day for renting a motorbike.

See [ edit ]

Aside from the obvious (the gorgeous beach!), there is not a great deal to see in Legian. It is a place where visitors stay, shop, eat, drink and go to the beach. Legian Beach is one of the best in Bali for viewing the sunset.

tourist map of legian bali

Head into the ocean with boogie boards (Rp 20,000/hour) and surfboards hired from at beach or take surfing lessons from the Surf School based at Blue Ocean beach.

If renting from locals on the beach, be sure to use this fact to get a good price.

On Saturday and Sunday evenings, the beach front is packed with tourists, expats, locals and motorbikes, with fire pois and musicians jamming on the beach - you'll be more than welcome to join in.

Almost every evening at about 17:00 a game of beach football begins right in front of de ja vu on Blue Ocean Beach. Visitors are normally welcomed if they want to join in.

A more leisurely beach pursuit is to situate yourself, cocktail in hand, at one of the many beach front cafes on this stretch, and watch one of the world's great sunsets. Be in position by about 17:30.

Spas and treatments [ edit ]

Informal massages, manicures , pedicures and hair braiding , are all widely available while you relax on the beach in this area.

Buy [ edit ]

Legian is crammed full of shops selling everything from the latest designer surfware to Balinese souvenirs to take home. This is a shopping destination. Covering the main shopping area in Legian will not take too long. It encompasses Jalan Melasti, Jalan Padma, Jalan Werkudara and Jalan Arjuna, all of which run perpendicular to Jalan Legian on the beach side. Jalan Padma is especially good for beads, shell work and other similar trinkets. Jalan Arjuna is lined with small stores selling sarongs and fabrics. On Jalan Legian look for slightly more upmarket boutiques, and the ubiquitous surfwear/sportswear stores (although the larger of these are in neighbouring Kuta ).

There are two markets on Jalan Melasti. Close to the beach at the western end there is a large art market selling Balinese handicrafts and other items for tourists. You could easily buy all of your presents to take home in one visit here. At the eastern end where Jalan Melasti becomes Jalan Sri Wijaya, there is a morning fresh produce market which opens from about 05:00.

Eat [ edit ]

Legian's beachfront restaurants are popular spots for sunset and people watching.

Squeezed between Kuta and Seminyak , this area has a wide variety of accommodation options, and especially so in the mid-range market. Legian is a bit more upmarket compared to the surfer and backpacker-oriented Kuta, but distinctly downmarket from hip Seminyak.

Legian Travel Guide

Legian Travel

Legian is nestled between Kuta and Seminyak , and its location is a good indication of its feel. A little less hectic than Kuta, not as trendy as Seminyak.

If you want to be in the main tourist destinations of Bali, and have shops, markets,  food options and the beach at your doorstep then it’s for you. If you came to Bali to see beautiful beaches or rice fields, then you’re probably best looking into Ubud , Jimbaran , Uluwatu or the North or East coast of Bali, either as an alternative or combining it with Legian.

There are plenty of things to do in Legian, including shopping, swimming, eating out, massages, and surfing lessons.  At the beach end of Jalan Melasti is a large market selling traditional Balinese items and souvenirs.

Legian would be a good option if you wanted to stay in Seminyak but it was over the budget. Or if you wanted to be near Kuta but not stay right there. Legain offers great value for money.

What’s Nearby?

Depending on traffic… Kuta and Seminyak are walkable or a short taxi. Ngurah Rai International Airport is 15 mins south. Jimbaran is 30 mins south. Uluwatu is 45 mins south. Ubud is about 1.5 hrs away.

Kuta and Seminyak are close by, so you could go to Kuta to shop or go to Waterbom Park, and you can also easily access Seminyak for more boutique high-end shopping, art galleries, cafes and fine dining.

Another option is visiting  Tanah Lot , a Balinese Temple on the coast. You could do a day trip to Ubud although I think  staying there  would be much more enjoyable. And then there is always a tasty  seafood dinner on the beach in Jimbaran .

FEEL //  Busy, touristy and laid-back at the same time.

BEST FOR //  Sunsets, budget to mid-range eats, bars and clubs, shopping, learning to surf.

A Day In Legian

Morning:  Spend the morning walking the streets looking for a bargain

Lunch:  Have lunch at Nalu Bowls or Shelter Cafe

Afternoon:  Relax at the beach

Sunset:  Stay at the beach to watch a beautiful Balinese sunset

Night:  Have dinner in Legian or Seminyak and try one of the beach bars.

Tip: Legian is close to Kuta and Seminyak, so you could easily go between the three places…

Hello from London Mandy and Chris! I must start by saying your site is absolutely fantastic thank you for providing such a useful resource! We will be in Bali for 10 nights staying in Legian (at the Stones!) and then Nusa Dua.. a couple of questions for you: 1) In terms of booking excursions to e.g. Ubud and Mount Batur should we do this before arrival (if so can you recommend a tour operator?) or is best to when at the hotel? 2) We will be in Bali on Christmas Day and would like to spend the day sailing.. any ideas on operator for full day catamaran excursions? / If not any ideas for Christmas Day in Legian (or nearby?) Best, Danny

I am planning for honeymoon in Bali in the month of March. Can u please help me in planning the same? Which are the good hotels to stay for couples & which are the must see spots?

Hi, Uluwatu is a popular area for honeymoons as it has some stunning resorts perched on the clifftops with great views. Some amazing hotels there include Alila, Anantara, Samara and Banyan Tree. But Jimbaran, Nusa Dua, Seminyak and Ubud all have great options too, depending on what you’re looking for. Jimbaran/Uluwatu area have great beaches (Padang Padang, Bingin) as well as Pandawa Beach near Nusa Dua. Uluwatu temple has some great views but lots of cheeky monkeys. Seafood dinner on the beach in Jimbaran for sunset is always nice. Dinner at a beautiful restaurant, there are a lot of these in Seminyak. Visiting some rice terraces. Riding a bicycle through traditional villages. There are so many things to do in Bali! Let us know if we can help in any other way, otherwise have a wonderufl honeymoon :)

hi, what a blog! thank you guys for this beautiful website, it is very informative and easy to read. i seek your advice on where to ‘sleep’ in Bali. we – a group of four friends – are looking for a blend of relaxation and adventure and it sounds like it could be found in Kuta and Seminyak. So what do you think about a ‘vacation rental’ in Legian as base for an exciting retreat? is it the right way to go? cheers,

Hi Ahmed, thanks so much! For a group of friends this would probably be a great area/base. By vacation rental, do you mean renting a villa? Villa rentals are a great option in Bali, especially for a group. They range from the basic to the extravagant, with pool, maid and sometimes chef included. It really just depends on your personal preference, if you want to all stay together in a villa, or if you would rather the facilities at a hotel, and comparing what you can get for the price. Have a great time in Bali :) Let us know if you have any other questions.

The Lazy Tourist’s Guide to Legian, Bali

July 31, 2018 by Vanessa Workman 24 Comments

Some travelers arrive at a destination with a jam-packed itinerary in place and others may prefer to wing it once they arrive. I, myself, have been known to arrive with the intent of doing much more than I actually end up doing, because sometimes after getting settled in, and decompressing a bit, I can often get downright lazy. Sound familiar? Well, that’s exactly what happened to me in Legian, Bali. Although there is an abundance of things to do in Legian and the surrounding areas, I found that some lazy tourist downtime turned out to be just what the doctor ordered.

The Lazy Tourist’s Guide to Legian, Bali

I had arrived with good travel writer intentions and a whole list of possible things to do in Legian and nearby Ubud, but when I opened my handful of tourist brochures the ‘guided tours’ (aka lazy way to do things) all appeared to offer very similar things; ATV and (gasp) Elephant riding , seemingly being the most popular. And of course, they also included the requisite visits to various waterfalls, temples and picturesque padi fields. But nothing jumped out at me as especially interesting or unique, and most required a full day commitment. My eyes glazed over at the mere thought of a full day excursion and pickings were slim in advertised activities in the cut to the chase, ala carte category.

The Lazy Tourist’s Guide to Legian, Bali

But what I discovered as I shuffled back and forth through the Legian-Kuta area, either on foot or rented scooter, was that there are plenty of things to do within Legian itself. And the city is interesting. Not necessarily because of the local sights, but more-so because of the culture, the people and of course, the food. Little by little the Legian community revealed to me its own special charm and uniqueness. I found it has all the makings of laid-back, vacation worthy Indonesia destination.

Hello Legian!

Located about 20-minutes north of the Denpasar International Airport, Legian is actually a subdivision of ‘Kuta’, as is nearby Seminyak. Staying in Legian, I found the area to be less chaotic than Kuta ‘proper’ and that nearly everything was within walking distance. Not everything is easy to find due to the lack of a detailed street map availability and the zig zagging of one-way streets, but it’s all right there if you keep looking! And if push comes to shove you can always grab a taxi or a Go Jek, which is Indonesia’s version of Uber.

The Lazy Tourist’s Guide to Legian, Bali

Lazy Tourist Things to Do in Legian

For the lazy tourist, Legian has plenty of activities to keep boredom at bay without requiring loads of energy or costing a lot of money, and enough diversity to keep mixed-interest, more energetic travel companions content. But if you prefer a more ‘Be Here Now’ Balinese itinerary, here are a few suggestions for lazy tourist things to do in Legian.

Head to the Beach!

Is there a beach in Legian? Of course there is! Legian Beach is the 2 kilometers stretch of beachfront between Jalan Melasti north to Jalan Arjuna (also known as Jalan Double Six). It has everything you could want in a beach, except maybe privacy, because it’s popular. Very popular. Take a long walk on the beach or rent a lounger for Rp50,000 to Rp100,000 a day. Plenty of food and drinks are available as well as mobile masseuses. Get a seaside massage, drink a Bintang and call it a day. The ultimate lazy tourist outing.

The Lazy Tourist’s Guide to Legian, Bali

Get a Massage or Two or Three

Speaking of massages, everyone knows Bali is famous for Balinese massages, but similar to Thailand you will find Zen-touting spas on nearly every corner in Legian and Kuta. I lucked out with finding 2 that were not only affordable but the ‘real deal’. The Purrfect Spa is a tucked-in-a-small-alley gem and has a, you guessed it, cat theme. Although I saw no cats on the premises, I was soon purring with contentment from my purr-fect leg massage. They also offer a loyalty card, with a buy ‘5 treatments and get 1 Balinese massage free’ offer.

The Lazy Tourist’s Guide to Legian, Bali

As my good luck was also mixed in with a bit of bad luck, within several days since my arrival, I found myself in need of ‘ear candling’. Without going into the gory details, sudden, excessive ear wax can cause a very uncomfortable loss of hearing. In my case, excessive ear wax + hotel swimming pool = deaf as a post. Speaking from personal experience, pharmaceuticals and over the counter remedies can make it much worse too.

The Lazy Tourist’s Guide to Legian, Bali

After two days of trying to read lips it was suggested to me to try ear candling at Suriwathi Hotel’s Bonito Spa . It was embarrassing, but whoa that was an experience in itself and I highly recommend to get it done immediately if you get the tell-tale signs of swimmer’s ear. Unfortunately, my case was already too severe and ear candling didn’t cure me. But I believe it would have fixed the problem had I gone there earlier. Bonito Spa staff are very professional and, obviously, experts in all things spa related. From yucky ear candling to hair crème, head massages to therapeutic Balinese massage with onsite healer Wayan, they’ve got it covered. Purrfect Spa, Lebak Bene Street, T: 081 357 673 331 Bonito Spa (Suriwathi Hotel), Sahadewa Street No. 12 (Garlic Lane), T: 0361764837

Collect Photos of Penjors

Visitors to Bali can’t help but notice the multitude of bamboo shrines along the various roadsides. Small decorative boxes are usually attached to the arched bamboo poles and at various stages of death by the elements. These are called Penjors and are 10-meter bamboo poles elaborately decorated with palm leaves and flowers.

The Lazy Tourist’s Guide to Legian, Bali

Penjors are initially displayed outside of Hindu homes and businesses the Tuesday before the twice yearly Galungan Festival; one of the most important religious ceremonies in Bali. It is believed that during the 10-day Galungan that the spirits of the ancestors visit Earth. And of course, offerings on arrival are always a good thing. The spiritual offerings are placed in the box or triangular-shaped ‘sanggah cucuk’ closer to earth. Penjors are home-made by individual families or purchased pre-made and are so lovely that many are left in place much longer than the 10-day festival.

Explore the Neighborhood on Foot

The riverfront area between Patih Jelantik (road) and Arjuna Nakulu to the west of Sunset Road is eclectic to say the least. And an interesting place to enjoy a morning or evening walk. The tree lined river banks are strewn with bits of rubbish and one must occasionally dodge speeding motorcycles and cars during more active parts of the day, yet it has charm.

The Lazy Tourist’s Guide to Legian, Bali

Families gather and fish from the narrow adjacent sidewalks, a few mobile vendors sell food, taxi drivers entertain themselves playing Indonesian Dominos; the cast of local characters reflecting the sincere warmth of Indonesia with a smile and ease of conversation. For English-speakers, don’t be shy! Many locals speak English and will understand you if you don’t talk too fast (as I often do).

The Lazy Tourist’s Guide to Legian, Bali

Shop ‘til You Drop

As much as I despise wall-to-wall ‘souvenir’ shops, the only complaint I have about Legian shopping is that I wasn’t flush with cash. I was drooling at every turn of the street as the shopaholic in me was screaming for a fix. The list of very cool fashions, accessories and the like ranges from classic batik wear to hand-woven purses and bags to endless choices of sun glasses. Beyond that there is local art, unique handicrafts and much, much more. The many shops are within convenient shuffle radius, too, so physical exertion is kept to a minimal. If you love to shop, Legian will not disappoint.

The Lazy Tourist’s Guide to Legian, Bali

Visit the Night Markets

I’m unsure of the exact number of ‘night markets’ in Legian as their definition is a bit of a grey area. When I think of a night market I think of food, glorious food and lots of it. In Legian it can mean that too, in addition to including a few cafes and late night clothing shops. But for the most part, I did locate two, which are walking distance from each other. A small night market is located on Jalan Sriwijaya near Jalan Patih Jelantik and the other, larger night market is on Jalan Dewi Sri as it runs into Jalan Merta Nadi. I personally felt a bit vulnerable, considering my age and gender, so do consider that if you are traveling solo. The streets are busy and not well lit.

The Lazy Tourist’s Guide to Legian, Bali

See a Dentist

The last thing you expect, while on holiday, is the need for a dentist. But as I was on an especially lucky lazy tourist holiday, I cracked a tooth and indeed needed a dentist in a big way. I also have an unreasonable fear of dentists, but what are ya gonna do, right? So, I bit the bullet (no pun intended) and took several expatriates’ dental recommendation and went to Drg. I Nyoman Ridun. Dr. Ridun is an oral surgeon by day and has a local practice in the evenings which is strictly on a first come, first served basis. Show up at 6pm and wait your turn.

The Lazy Tourist’s Guide to Legian, Bali

How was my experience? I was astounded. An absolutely painless procedure which took two appointments to complete and cost about $50US. I’d like to attribute Drg. Ridun’s painfree talent to some sort of Zen or perhaps his good looks, but he is just very good at what he does. He and his staff, of one, are excellent. Drg. I Nyoman Ridun, Jalan Raya Legian 369X, T: (0361) 750858

Get a Medical Check Up

Speaking of medical emergencies, remember my ear candling experience which I mentioned earlier in this post? The remedy that didn’t work? Well, that whole swimmer’s ear, deaf as a post nightmare was really putting a damper on my lazy tourist vacation. I was eternally grateful to find that International Tourist Medical Services was a convenient next step in avoiding a trip to the emergency room.

The Lazy Tourist’s Guide to Legian, Bali

I stopped in the clinic and within 30 minutes, the doctor explained to me the procedure, flushed out my ears (more grose-ness) and fully restored my hearing. They take credit cards too! Super-efficient and affordable (relatively speaking), but they also provided me with a printed medical report to submit to my insurance company. All of this for about $100US. International Tourist Medical Services, Legian Street No. 363 (Next to Si Doi Hotel), T: +62 (361)751 981/+62 (361) 761 443

You can buy and claim online , even after you’ve left home. Travel insurance from WorldNomads.com is available to people from 140 countries. It’s designed for adventurous travellers with coverage for overseas medical, evacuation, baggage and a range of adventure sports and activities .

Places to Eat in Legian

Legian has no shortage of places to eat, drink and be merry. But in my quest to focus on eating more authentic local dishes (aka eat like a local) I found that more than a few local eateries had ‘westernized’, either in fancy menu additions, traditional dish name changes or gone all out in becoming international by offering the Epcot Center of culinary delights, with Italian, Chinese, Thai, Indonesian dishes and more all vying for menu prominence.

The Lazy Tourist’s Guide to Legian, Bali

One odd eatery even cranked up their music for their lone customer (me) because perhaps I looked like the groovy, toe tapping (western) type. But for the most part, I did indeed locate some great local food, ate like a local and in some instances, became a repeat customer.  Since I didn’t have enough time to perfect my Indonesian food verbiage (and sound like I know what I’m talking about), I’ll just share a few restaurant recommendations with you and keep it simple.

  Places to Stay in Legian

Where you base camp in the Legian (or Kuta) area can make a big difference in your Legian travel experience. I erroneously booked my first two nights in Kuta Beach and it was a dismal fail. I had totally forgotten about another hotel I had previously stayed in years ago and that would be Suriwathi Hotel. Which of course I recognized when I went to get my magic ear candling done. It would have been a much better option than Kuta Beach.

The Lazy Tourist’s Guide to Legian, Bali

Suriwathi Hotel has not changed much in the 5 years since we first met, but they have added more rooms to their two-pool estate. Their original bungalows are nothing short of charming and the newer addition offers spacious rooms that are clean as a whistle. Suriwathi Hotel is convenient to shopping, restaurants and just a 10-15-minute walk to the beach. You can check rates and availability HERE

The Lazy Tourist’s Guide to Legian, Bali

The Fontana Hotel is an affordable luxury option, which will appeal to couples, business travelers or just about anyone who can appreciate an occasional upgrade break from budget traveling. It has loads of amenities including an in-house spa, gym and pool, as well as a restaurant and bar. Impeccable front desk service too. Their location on Jalan Dewi Sri is just a stone’s throw from a slew of local eateries, the river and about a 20-minute walk from the beach. You can check rates and availability HERE

The Lazy Tourist’s Guide to Legian, Bali

Last but not least is Panorama Cottages II , where I stayed for the majority of my time in Legian. The hotel itself is about 30-years old and some of the rooms may show a bit of age, but the grounds are gorgeous, quiet and private. They also have a glorious pool with plenty of sun-loungers, shade trees and breeze. The front desk staff will do their best to assist you in just about anything; including a broken tooth. Several nearby mini marts, restaurants and shopping are within a short walking distance, and the beach is about a 15-minute walk away. You can check rates and availability HERE

Getting Around Legian

Arriving at the airport I learned quickly of the Rp150,000 price for the 15-minute taxi ride into town. I was exhaustingly able to get this down to Rp100,000, but it would have been much better to have had my hotel pick me up as that hassle-free service also costs Rp150,000. I was also quoted Rp150,000 for a ride from one hotel to another 10 minutes away; very much like Hat Yai, Thailand where one transportation price can often fit all. For new arrivals flying into Bali, I’d recommend pre-arranging an airport pick-up. As much fun as negotiating with taxi touts can be (kidding), you will save yourself time and stress to simply grab your luggage and search for a smiling faced, airport pick-up person with your name on their card.

The Lazy Tourist’s Guide to Legian, Bali

Things get better once into town and although much of Legian can be covered on foot; taxis are plentiful and motorbike rentals are cheap. Blue taxis run on a meter, but there is also Go Jek, which is Indonesia’s version of Uber or Grab. Car and motorbike Go Jek drivers are abundant. If you care to rent your own wheels, motorbikes run about Rp50,000 per day from Intan Car Rental.

Do note that there are several Legian and beyond, tourist maps available but they aren’t very detailed. Many of the ‘hidden gem’ nooks and crannies, pretty much stay hidden. Google maps are nearly as confusing. Or maybe that’s just me. I did put together the below Google My Map layer, for the sake of this post, which may or may not be helpful to you but it will at least give you a basic visual of proximity.

I must also mention that although riding your own scooter or motorbike through the winding streets of Legian and Kuta can have its own Easy Rider moments at times, it can also be a big pain in the butt. Keeping a very clear head and having excellent defensive driving skills is in your best interest. Locals drive fast and it is not uncommon for them to simply bypass traffic jams via people packed sidewalks. It can be especially challenging in the late afternoons and evenings. And for goodness sakes, wear a helmet! Intan Car Rental, Gg. Three Brother No. 5, T:+62(0361)750997

Getting to Bali

Due to the limited length of the runway, flights to Bali are limited to smaller aircraft which are scheduled from various major cities in Southeast Asia. I was pleasantly surprised to find a nearly direct flight from Langkawi Island, Malaysia to Bali (with a short layover in Kuala Lumpur) with Malindo Air. Quick, easy and super comfortable. It was also surprisingly inexpensive considering I was traveling during the popular dry season (April to August).

https://www.booking.com/searchresults.en.html?city=900048191&aid=885330&no_rooms=1&group_adults=1

For many, Bali is a dream destination, but seeing as many local sites as possible in X amount of time can truly be exhausting. So, if you happen to be a lazy tourist like me or have a few medical ’emergencies’ along the way (or both), I highly recommend a laid-back week or two in Legian. Find yourself a comfy hotel, kick back and live like a local, because the experience can be refreshing to say the least. By the way, the word ‘legian’ apparently means ‘sweet’ in Balinese. And Legian can indeed, be a sweet, easy and relaxing getaway.

Double 6 Vanessa! I loved Legian. Spent many afternoons lazing on that beach. We rented an apartment in a Balinese village roughly a 20 minute walk beyond the heavily traffic main drag in Seminyak. Us Booleys and all Balinese in the hood. Fun! I got a hair cut in the village for $1.95 USD, and tipped the lady 3 bucks, so she went bonkers LOL. She also gave me a neck massage which was generous, but then again, Balinese folks are wonderful, heart-centered human beings. Their kindness never surprises me.

Super post!

Kindred spirits Ryan! I was thinking something was wrong with me since so many people are such big Ubud fans, but I truly enjoyed just hanging out in Legian. I did make it to Ubud for a quick day trip, but there were just a bit too many non-locals there. ;)

September 16, 2018 at 5:16 am

hehe I see so much of my self in the lazy touristing AHAH. I have frequented massages, and shopping because i am just feeling like…chilling. I have also popped by the beach as part of ‘doing something while not doing anything’ AHAH. great guide, I dig the spirit of it, its real traveler stuff.

September 16, 2018 at 9:31 am

Thanks Kimberly! Yes, well I did actually go to Ubud on one day but to be honest I found it not a great ‘day trip’ from Legion. It’s probably worth exploring Ubud if staying there and lazily shuffling through town. :D

“Lazy” and “Legian” has a nice ring to it. I could do with a lazy beach holiday. Bali looks like the place to go to the dentist, especially if you don’t want to pay a fortune for a filling!

September 16, 2018 at 9:32 am

Definitely can save big bucks getting dental work done there! (the savings will pay for your holiday for sure).

' src=

September 16, 2018 at 2:54 pm

If we’re travelling for more than a few weeks, we always put in a lazy day every week or so. I don’t think I’d be able to keep going if we didn’t. Legian city looks quite nice though. I imagine it must have been fun to interact with the locals along that riverfront.

September 17, 2018 at 9:44 am

The locals were the absolute highlight of my short trip Rhonda. I even think taking a ‘neighborhood’ walking tour, with a limited number of people, would be a big hit in Legion (if they had such a thing).

' src=

September 17, 2018 at 6:03 am

Love the attitude. The laziness is infectious and appreciated much the easy way you covered Legian. I need to be able to do that!

September 17, 2018 at 9:51 am

Thanks Carol! I was disappointed to end up having those ‘little health issues’, but it did open my eyes a bit to the local ‘experience’ rather than the sightseeing mega tour version of Bali. I’d go back in a heartbeat just to ‘hang out’ (and maybe visit the sexy dentist again) :D

' src=

September 17, 2018 at 5:49 pm

I like your approach to travelling – sometimes I do think we try to do to much! Legian looks like a good place to relax and Panorama Cottages would be my choice of place to stay!

September 18, 2018 at 11:52 am

Panorama Cottages is truly a hidden gem. Well maybe not so hidden as a few smart expats are pretty much calling it ‘long term’ home these days. It would definitely be my first choice for a few weeks of hunkering down.

' src=

September 18, 2018 at 12:31 pm

I love the term you coined “lazy tourist.” I usually strive to rest, but I do get curious and want to explore my new surroundings. We’re hoping to get to Bali before the end of the year and reading this is quite helpful. Sorry to hear about the dental issues. I had the same problem in Buenos Aires about two years ago and the process was very pain-free and relatively inexpensive compared to U.S. prices. I was also covered by World Nomad and dental care was covered in the insurance. In the end, sounds like you had a great time!!

September 19, 2018 at 11:40 am

I can’t wait to read about your Bali food explorations! I was going to attempt a food post and then realized I was way over my head. Too many choices and very diverse.

' src=

September 18, 2018 at 9:52 pm

I love the idea of kicking back and wandering around, I also love night markets! Do not love the idea of ear flushings and cracked teeth, ugh!

September 19, 2018 at 11:38 am

Yes, sometimes we gotta make lemon-aid from lemons.I was grateful my injuries were not worse and that I was at least in a comfortable community. And I have the highest respect to Legion’s dental and medical services.

' src=

September 19, 2018 at 2:28 pm

So Legian means ‘sweet’ in Balinese? That’s quite an appropriate name! Looks like you had a lovely laid-back time just immersing in the spirit of the town. Comfy accommodations and good food to top!

September 19, 2018 at 6:53 pm

I saw one reference to the Balinese explanation. Sounds good to me. ;)

' src=

September 19, 2018 at 5:13 pm

Hmm. I’m a horrible lazy traveler. I get bored trying to keep things low key and I actually find I don’t really experience a place. So I jam pack my itinerary with everything I possibly can to see and do it all. Bring on the best restaurants, food tours and any sort of activity!

September 19, 2018 at 6:51 pm

Maybe I need to take some lessons from you on being a bit more of a pro-active traveler. :D

' src=

September 20, 2018 at 9:07 am

This is exactly the type of guide I need when I’m jet lagged and just dragging. A massage or two sounds absolutely perfect in Legian. Even though I may pass on the dentist recommendation. Haha

September 21, 2018 at 9:01 am

I normally pass on dentist recommendations too, Kate. But this go round I was grateful to get one. :D

May 25, 2019 at 2:45 pm

Fantastic article Vanessa, says it all :-)

May 25, 2019 at 3:16 pm

Thanks Dianne! Also thank you for the dental recommendation! :D

Bali Tourist Map: The Best Tourist Attractions in Bali

updated December 9, 2023, 9:43 am 54.1k Views 17 Comments

Bali has so much to offer you’re spoilt for choice. There are so many temples , beaches, waterfalls, wildlife, theme parks, markets, swings , volcanic mountains, rice terraces and nearby islands to explore you’ll need a plan to tick some of them off your Bali Bucket List. My Bali Tourist Map includes the most popular attractions in one easy guide complete with entrance fees, opening hours and tips so you can make the most of your Bali holiday.

Bali Tourist Map

The Bali Tourist Map includes the most popular attractions in one easy guide complete with entrance fees, opening hours and tips so you can make the most of your Bali holiday.

Tanah Lot Temple is a must-visit for anyone holidaying in Bali. Tanah Lot, which means “Land in the Sea” in Balinese, is the most visited tourist attraction in Bali for a reason. It really is one of the most iconic images of Bali and makes for a spectacular day tour. The surrounding car park, markets and parks make it quite a large area, with the main attraction being a path leading down to the rocks where you can walk out to the temple itself during low tide. When the tide is coming in the local guides sometimes have to convince swathes of tourists to get off the rocks, which can be covered by water quite quickly. Along the way, there is a large market where some of the best souvenir shopping and deals can be had on the island. Surprisingly, perhaps because of the competition and the sheer number of tourists visiting, the prices can be much better than other markets in the tourist enclaves of Kuta, Seminyak and Nusa Dua, so I recommend taking the time to go shopping instead of rushing through the complex. As you approach the gates leading to the temple, I recommend taking a right turn around the parks surrounding the oceanfront to get a look at Tanah Lot from a higher perspective. From there you can also get a decent view of the rocks and check the tide before venturing down. The incoming tide can catch unwary visitors on the rocks between the land and the temple. Looking at the temple from the land there is a pathway up to the left which provides spectacular views of the temple, especially at sunset. There are around a dozen cafes with outside seating overlooking the temple, with the best views towards the top. I recommend doing the right side first, then down to the rocks, tide permitting, before going up the pathway for another view of Tanah Lot, which is stunning at sunset.

Ubud Monkey Forest

Ubud Monkey Forest is extremely popular because, well monkeys are just so damn cute. They have also earned a well-deserved reputation for being masterful thieves. It’s best to leave sunglasses, handbags and anything you don’t want to part with inside the tour vehicle, as the monkeys have a well-earned reputation for stealing pretty much anything they can get their hands on. The Ubud Monkey Forest is very accessible and is an easy walk through the sanctuary grounds over well-paved walkways. It is visited by more than 10,000 tourists a month, making it one of the most popular attractions in Bali.

Ubud Monkey Forest - Best Tourist Attractions in Bali

Entrance Fee:  Rp 80k Location:   Jl. Monkey Forest, Ubud, Kabupaten Gianyar Opening Hours:  Mo-Su 08:30-17:30

Ubud Art Market

Located in the heart of Ubud, this double-storey warren of stalls is full of wood carvings, batik shirts, sarongs, and all manner of other souvenirs aimed specifically at tourists. The merchants here haggle with tourists for a living and think nothing of asking for ten times the going price, so try to establish a baseline before you go in to buy. Most of the merchants downstairs will lose interest if you try to get a reasonable price. It is better to try the shops upstairs where you will find the same products often for sale at lower prices.

Entrance Fee:  Free Location:   Jl Raya Ubud No.35, Ubud Opening Hours:  Mo-Su 06:00-18:00

Tegalalang Rice Terraces

The Tegalalang Rice Terraces is one of the most accessible and beautiful rice terraces in Bali. Lining the main road in the small village of Tegalalang are a number of hillside cafes where you can relax, try the local Luwak coffee and get some Instagram-worthy photos.

If you’re feeling physically fit and adventurous you can descend the steep incline and walk up through the valley to the other side. There are several well-trodden paths around the terraces although the going can be tough.

Tegalalang Rice Terraces - Bali Holiday Secrets

Trekking down the very steep slopes and through the rice terraces to get there is half the adventure. Be careful though, as when it’s raining the slopes are very slippery and shouldn’t be attempted unless you are physically fit with decent footwear. The wet slopes are responsible for a lot of sprained ankles.

You can read more about Tegallalang Rice Terraces .

Bali Safari & Marine Park

I’m not usually a fan of animal parks, but if you are going to visit one while in Bali I recommend  Bali Safari & Marine Park . They put some serious effort and dollars into wildlife conservation in Indonesia and is home to over 1,000 animals across 100 species. They have some unique experiences, including night-time safaris and a number of programmes designed specifically for children.

Bali Safari & Marine Park - Best Tourist Attractions in Bali

Entrance Fee:  From Rp 720,000 Location:   Jl. Profesor Ida Bagus Mantra km 19,8, Serongga Opening Hours:  Mo-Su 09:00-17:00

Handarah Golf Course Gates

Stone gates are an important architectural tradition in Balinese culture. You will see them literally everywhere, from entrance ways to villages, temples and places of cultural significance.

At the entrance to Handarah Golf Course are the famous Handarah Gates. This is a photographer’s dream location with the lush mountains making a stunning backdrop behind the huge stone gates that are an excellent example of Balinese architecture.

Handarah Gates - Best Tourist Attractions in Bali

Entrance Fee:  Free Location:   Handarah Golf Course Opening Hours:  24 hours

Tegenungan Waterfall

Tegenungan is the largest waterfall by volume and the closest to the tourist enclaves in the south of the island, including Seminyak, Legian, Kuta and Sanur.

To get to Tegenungan Waterfall, drive from Denpasar to the Tegenungan Kemenuh village, in Gianyar. The drive is just 16 km or about 30 minutes. You need to walk around 15 mins down a series of steps to get to the river and then walk along the river bank to the foot of the falls.

Tegenungan Waterfall - Best Waterfalls in Bali

Be warned, when the river is flowing hard after rainfall the current is exceptionally strong, so make sure you only cross the river to climb the falls from the opposite bank if you really know what you’re doing.

Tegenungun is one of the 4 destinations on the Best Waterfalls Near Seminyak Tour.

Entrance Fee:  IDR 15.000 Location:   Jl Ir. Sutami, Kabupaten Gianyar Opening Hours:  Mo-Su 06:30-18:30

Waterbom Theme Park

Bali’s biggest water theme park in Bali with rides for all ages  Waterbom  is a great place if you are travelling with children of all ages. There are several food outlets as well as a swim-up bar for the grown-ups.

The area of north-eastern Bali at the Mount Batur caldera, commonly known as Kintamani. Kintamani, Batur and Penelokan villages sit on the rim of the huge Batur caldera about 1,500m above sea level and offer dramatic views of the active volcano and Lake Batur.

The Balinese of this area are warm and friendly, and also very traditional, so it’s appreciated if respect is paid by not walking on their farmlands, entering their temples (unless you wish to pray) and it’s advisable that women cover their legs to the knees.

Because it’s high in the mountains, the temperature can be up to 15 degrees cooler than down on the coast, and even more so at night. Combined with the often cloudy weather makes a sweater or jacket advisable during the day (and more so at night).

Mount Batur Sunrise Trek - Bali Holiday Secrets

One of the most extraordiary adventure activities in Bali is to go on a Mount Batur Sunrise Trek .

Entrance Fee:  Rp 30,000 Location:   South Batur, Kintamani, Bangli Regency Opening Hours:  Open 24 hours

Jatiluwih Rice Terraces

An incredibly beautiful area of verdant terraced rice paddies located in the shadow of Mount Batukaru. Running from the mountains to the coast, Jatiluwih Green Land as it is commonly known was nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2007. Jati means ‘really’ and Luwih means ‘special’, and it’s easy to see why. There are a number of cafes with stunning views in the area, making it an excellent place to stop for a while.

Jatiluwih Rice Terraces - Best Attractions in Bali

Entrance Fee:  Rp 40,000 Location:   Jl Jatiluwih No No.Desa, Jatiluwih, Penebel Opening Hours:  Mo-Su 08:30-18:00

Uluwatu Temple

Uluwatu Temple is, according to the Bali Tourism Board the 2nd most visited attraction after Tanah Lot, with over 1.7 million visitors in 2015. Apart from the extensive and spectacular temple complex situated on a cliff 70m above the sea, it is also known for the Balinese Kecak and fire dance performance.

Uluwatu Temple Kecak Show - Private Car & Driver Bali

I highly recommend taking the Ultimate Uluwatu Day Tour + Kecak Dace Sunset Show .

Entrance Fee:  IDR 30.000 Location:   Pecatu, South Kuta Opening Hours:  Mo-Su 08:00-19:00

Ulun Danu Beratan

The Floating Temple, Pura Ulan Danu Beratan  in Balinese, is one of the iconic images of Bali. The temple sits on the western shore of Lake Bratan in the mountains near Bedugul, and its position in the lake can give the illusion of floating on the water. It takes a full day to get there as the temple is located around 57 km from Seminyak, making it ideal to combine with other attractions along the way.

Ulun Danu Beratan - Bali Holiday Secrets

I have a tour specifically for Danu Beratan , but because it’s on the way to several of Bali’s most spectacular waterfalls, it’s also included in several other tours, including the Gitgit and Aling-Aling Waterfall tours.

Bedugul Market (Pasar Candi Kuning)

The Candi Kuning Market referred to as ‘Pasar Bedugul’ by the locals is a great place to stop and stock up on snacks and drinks during a tour. It’s one of the main markets in the area for flowers, fresh fruit and vegetables – mangosteen, bananas, tamarillos, tangerines and strawberries – and an excellent place to buy a wide selection of spices.

Because of its location a few minutes from Pura Ulun Danu Beratan there are a large number of souvenir shops with a huge range of handicrafts.

Bedugul Markets - Bali Holiday Secrets

A little way past Danu Beretan is Bedugul Market, which specialises in herbs, spices and vegetables grown in the highlands around Lake Beratan. I recommend making this a quick stop because it’s a long way back south and the traffic can get fierce later in the day when the tour buses leave Danu Beratan.

Lempuyang Temple

While Lempuyang is spectacular, there are so many photoshopped images on Instagram it can be a disappointment for many people. It’s a spectacular setting, with a steep climb up several stone stairways to get to the top of the temple complex. In my opinion, most tourists are missing the point of trying to get the perfect shot looking back through the temple gates back toward Mount Agung (the active volcano that disrupted flights in 2018).

The reality is Mount Agung can only be seen clearly for a few short hours after dawn before the clouds set in. And those mirror-like Instagram photos that make it look like a lake are completely fake.

Lempuyang Temple Sunrise Tour - Bali Holiday Secrets

That being said, if you are in Bali for longer than two weeks I highly recommend the trip to Lempuyang as the temple complex is inspiring for the walk up to the main stone staircase looking up towards the gates.

It’s best visited during an East Bali Day Tour taking in the water palace further down the valley as getting there will take several hours. However, if you are keen enough to wake up around 4 am I recommend the Lempuyang Sunrise Tour . I also have a day tour from South Bali to Lempuyang and ending at Ubud and another Lempuyang Instagram Tour that hits 4 of the most popular attraction in Bali.

Read more about Lemuyang Temple including day tours, location and entrance fees.

Pura Tirta Empul

Pura Tirta Empul is a Hindu Balinese water temple dating back to the 10th century and is one of the holiest in Bali, located near the town of Tampaksiring, around a half-hour drive (15 km) north of Ubud. The temple pond has a spring which gushes fresh water regularly, which Balinese Hindus consider to be holy – Tirta Empul means Holy Spring in Balinese.

You can bathe in the springs alongside locals if you observe a few simple courtesies and protocols. Start from the left, and if there is someone praying alongside to the right, simply join in the queue (or start one) and be patient.

Work your way right until you get to the end of the first pool, and hop up and across into the second one. It’s an extraordinary experience, and one I highly recommend with two provisos.

tourist map of legian bali

One, there was an outbreak of e.coli in 2017 due to contaminated water leaking into the water table upstream from the springs in. The water has been cleaned up since then, but if another outbreak happens I’ll send word through the email newsletter, which you will want to sign up for.

Two, the facilities for changing beforehand and washing afterwards are rudimentary at best, and very unhygienic at worst. You are best off getting changed into your swimsuit in your car beforehand and having a towel and a change of clothes for afterwards.

Regardless of the poor changing facilities I highly recommend bathing in the temple. It’s a unique and enlightening experience and well worth the effort to plan ahead.

Pura Tirta Empul is only 1.3 km from  Gunung Kawi , so it makes sense to visit them both on the same trip or a day tour.

Read more about Tirta Empul including day tours, location and entrance fees.

The Elephant Cave as it’s known – Goa Gajah in Balinese – is an ancient temple on the outskirts of Ubud. While the steps down to the temple complex are fairly steep, it’s only a 5-minute walk and not difficult for average fitness levels.

Goa Gajah - Best Tourist Attractions in Bali

The Elephant Cave temple is located 5 km from Ubud, 31 km from Seminyak and 58 km from Nusa Dua.

You can read more about Goa Gajah including day tours, location and entrance fees.

Gunung Kawi

Gunung Kawi Temple is an 11th-century temple complex that sits on either side of the Pakerisan river. It comprises 10 rock-cut shrines (candi in Balinese) that are carved into 7-metre-high sheltered niches of the sheer cliff face.

Gunung Kawi - Best Tourist Attractions in Bali

These funeral monuments are thought to be dedicated to King Anak Wungsu of the Udayana dynasty and his favourite queens. The temple overlooks the Pakerisan River, which also flows past Pura Tirta Empul, a kilometre to the north.

Read more about Gunung Kawi including day tours, location and entrance fees.

Sekumpul Waterfall

One of the most inspiring natural wonders in Bali, Sekumpul Waterfall isn’t easy to get to, but it is definitely worth the trip.

Located 66 km north of Ubud and 76 km from Seminyak it will take the best part of a day to drive (or ride) out there and back. At the carpark, there are a number of local guides very keen for you to employ their services, and to be honest, their assistance for this particular hike can be a big help as they do know a couple of hidden gems nearby. From the carpark to the falls is around a 45-minute hike, and due to its popularity, the track is quite well marked.

It’s busiest between midday and 2 pm, so if you’re making it a stop on a day tour I advise going straight there when the traffic is lightest and before the crowds arrive. The waterfall flows year-round, but like all the waterfalls in Bali, things get pretty intense during the wet months from December through to March.

Sekumpuil Waterfall - Best Waterfalls in Bali

Make sure you have decent walking shoes because the track is quite steep in places and the rocks can be very slippery. Take your time, you do not want to sprain an ankle this far away from medical services.

That being said, Sekumpul falls are without doubt one of my top 5 destinations in Bali. They are quite magical, and the hike through the jungle is an adventure in itself. If you want to visit other waterfalls in this region I also recommend Aling-Aling and Gitgit .

Entrance Fee: IDR15,000 Address: Sekumpul, Lemukih, Kabupaten Buleleng Opening Hours: Mo-Su 06:00-18:00

Besakih Temple

Besakih Temple (also known as the Mother Temple) is the largest and most holy of all Hindu temples in Bali. Located in the village of the same name on the slopes of Mount Agung, the temple complex is quite far from the tourist areas, 66km from Seminyak and around 2-2.5 hours depending on traffic.

Besakih Temple - Best Tourist Attractions in Bali

Besakih Temple is more impressive, in my opinion than Lempuyang Temple, which is a huge deal on Instagram, thanks to the fake reflective-pool photos taken using a mirror on the camera lens, creating a false illusion of what the temple actually looks like.

Entrance Fee:  IDR 60.000 Location:   Besakih, Rendang, Karangasem Regency Opening Hours:  Mo-Su 07:00-22:00

Garuda Wisnu Kencana

The  Garuda Wisnu Kencana  statue is the symbol of God Vishnu riding the great Garuda as his trusted companion. The statue is one of the world’s largest at a height of 75m for the statue itself, and 120m if you include the pedestal it stands on. That’s 30m taller than the Statue of Liberty in New York, but what makes Garuda Wisnu Kencana truly exceptional is the sheer size – it has a 64m wingspan and can be clearly seen from several kilometres up the coastline.

The statue was built in sections on the island of Java and is made from layers of wax, fibreglass, copper and brass, then cut up and driven by truck to Bali for final installation.

It has been 25 years since construction started and cost an estimated USD$100 million. The monument was completed on 31 July 2018 and inaugurated by Indonesian President Joko Widodo on 22 September 2018 and is already attracting over 3,000 visitors a day.

Real Bali Swing

The most popular swing park is Real Bali Swing, located 15 km from Ubud. They have 15 different single swings to try, along with three tandem swings so you can be scared witless alongside your loved one.

There are also 4 large stones to pose on (yes, posing on stones is a thing). They also have 6 nests to pose in. And yes, posing in nests is a thing too. They are quite artistic, made from branches and fauna but mostly have a lined interior for comfort.

Bali Swing operates a free shuttle operating from Ubud, but make sure the entry fee you are paying is confirmed upfront. They also sell package tours which include other activities like rafting, elephant rides and  chasing waterfalls , but these tend to be quite expensive compared to hiring your own driver and making your own custom itinerary.

Real Bali Swing - White Water Rafting Ubud Tour

The Real Bali Swing is included in my White Water Rafting Ubud Tour .

Entrance Fee:  Rp 400,000 Location:   Jl. Dewi Saraswati No.7, Bongkasa Pertiwi, Abiansemal Opening Hours:  Mo-Su 08:00-17:00

Amed is a sleepy coastal strip of fishing villages in East Bali that’s trying to maintain it’s traditional values while tourism inevitably continues to grow.

It’s a beautiful part of Bali and the sunsets on the point overlooking Amed village with Mount Agung in the background are spectacular. The area is known for being a bit of a mecca for free and scuba diving.

There are some really interesting things to do around Amed, but perhaps one of the most surprising is to go snorkelling off a small stony beach next to a fishing village where a small Japanese submarine was sunk during the Second World War and lies only 20m off the shore.

Amed Sunset - Best Tourist Attractions in Bali

It’s a long drive to get there, and the road from the east side of Bali is often quite busy with heavy trucks transporting goods and construction materials to the main centres, so extra care needs to be taken as overtaking on the wrong side of the road appears to be quite an acceptable driving manoeuvre.

Making Amed part of a 3 or 4-day tour starting at Seminyak, going through Ubud, on to Lovina and then to Amed is an excellent road trip.

Entrance Fee:  Free Location:   Amed Beach, Nusa Tenggara Opening Hours:  Open 24 hours

Lovina is in the very north of Bali. It’s a small town, bigger than a village but smaller than Denpasar, known for its black sand beaches, coral reefs and dolphin tours. Lovina is 73 km from Ubud and 85km from Seminyak.

Nusa Lembongan is one of the most accessible outer islands from Bali, one of three islands that make up the Nusa Penida chain.

Gili Islands

The Gili Islands are a group of three very small individual islands, Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air, each with their own character and varying degrees of atmosphere, from party to chill mode.

The Gili Islands are located off the coast of Lombok Island. Characterized by sandy beaches fringed with palm trees, they’re known for their coral reefs just offshore. On the smallest island of Gili Meno, sea turtles swim at Turtle Point. At Gili Trawangan, the largest island, a sunken ship sits at Wreck Point near Mentigi Beach.

Travel Tips and Practical Information

To make the most of your trip to Legian, it’s essential to be prepared with some practical information and travel tips. From the best time to visit to health and safety considerations, these guidelines will help you plan a memorable and hassle-free vacation.

Best Time to Visit Legian

The best time to visit Legian is during the dry season, which typically runs from April to September. During this time, you can expect sunny days, lower humidity, and ideal weather for outdoor activities like swimming, surfing, and sightseeing. The wet season, from October to March, brings more rain and higher humidity, although it is often less crowded and offers more competitive accommodation rates.

What’s the Weather Like?

Legian, Bali, is known for its tropical climate, with temperatures typically ranging around 25°C (77°F) throughout the year. The current weather in Legian is 25°C with a few clouds and a humidity of 94%. The wind speed is 2.68 m/s coming from the east-northeast. This kind of weather is fairly consistent throughout the year, with slight variations in temperature and rainfall. Sunrise and sunset times shift slightly, but expect approximately 12 hours of daylight throughout the year.

What’s Surfing like in Legian?

The best time to surf in Bali depends on the specific beach and the surfer’s skill level. The smaller waves during the dry season (May to September) are ideal for beginners. More experienced surfers might prefer the larger swells of the wet season (October to April). Always remember to check the local surf forecast before heading out to ensure safe and enjoyable surfing conditions.

Visa and Entry Requirements

Depending on your nationality, you may be eligible for a visa-free entry or a visa on arrival when visiting Indonesia. Many nationalities, including citizens of the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada, can enter Indonesia without needing a visa for a stay of up to 30 days. Visa on arrival is available for citizens of specific countries and allows a stay of up to 30 days, with the possibility of a one-time extension for another 30 days. Therefore, checking the latest visa requirements for your nationality before planning your trip is essential.

Currency and Payment Options

The official currency in Indonesia is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). It is recommended to carry some cash, as smaller establishments and local markets may not accept credit cards. ATMs are widely available in Legian and other tourist areas, and major credit cards are accepted at hotels, restaurants, and larger shops. Money changers are also available throughout the area, but be sure to use a reputable exchange service to avoid scams.

Health and Safety Tips

  • Stay hydrated and use sun protection: Legian’s tropical climate can be hot and sunny, making it essential to stay hydrated and protect yourself from the sun. Drink plenty of water, use sunscreen, and wear a hat and sunglasses when outdoors.
  • Be cautious with street food: While street food in Legian can be delicious, choosing vendors with care is essential. Look for stalls with a high turnover of customers and freshly cooked food to minimize the risk of foodborne illnesses.
  • Use insect repellent: Mosquitoes can be prevalent in Bali, and dengue fever is a risk in some areas. Make sure to use insect repellent and wear long sleeves and pants, especially when mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk.
  • Follow beach safety guidelines: Legian’s beaches can have strong currents and rip tides. Always swim between the designated flags and heed any warnings or beach conditions posted by lifeguards.
  • Purchase travel insurance: To ensure peace of mind and protection during your trip, consider purchasing comprehensive travel insurance that covers most medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and other unforeseen events.
  • Be aware of your surroundings: While Legian is generally safe for travellers, it’s essential to be cautious and mindful of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas and at night. Keep your belongings secure and do your best to avoid displaying valuables.

Hello Travel Brains Trust,

I have planned to do a couple of indoor activities like massages and cooking lessons. But bloody hell, I may need to do more. Lol!

Had anyone travelled to Bali where it rained the whole time? Is it actually worthwhile to do the rice terraces, etc?

I really wanted to see the monkey for dance and other traditional shows....

Do they close the beach clubs when it rains?

Any tips would be much appreciated.

The weather app is usually wrong from my experience

The rainy season is usually over by April.

This year has seen extended rains

If it does rain it will usually be overnight or a quick downpour during the day then clears to beautiful blue skies

Tracey M is correct from my experience also. Don’t worry the weather should be fine.
