Hello, just want to tell you that we had a wonderful time in Mexico on the Our Lady of Guadalupe Pilgrimage. It was so nice of you to let us go to the shrine the first day and then went back again on the last day of our pilgrimage. We will be booking another Catholic Pilgrimage shortly. Thank you!

I absolutely loved it! Thank you for the pilgrimage to Our Lady of Guadalupe!

The pilgrimage to Our Lady of Guadalupe was an incredible experience. It was a blend of spiritual growth and cultural awareness. The Spanish saw the indigenous people as a group to evangelize, not exterminate like the Protestant colonizers in the north. Inter-marriage flourished along with evangelization so that now most people in Latin America are a mixture of indigenous and Spanish people. They are equally proud of of both heritages which shows in the way they worship.

Thank you for a wonderful pilgrimage to Mexico and Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Basilica de Guadalupe: Planning Your Visit

Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe

The Basilica of Guadalupe is a Catholic shrine on Tepeyac Hill in Mexico City that is devoted to Our Lady of Guadalupe (the Blessed Virgin Mary and the patroness of Mexico). This important pilgrimage destination is one of the most visited churches in the world and a must-see site on any trip to Mexico City. The Basilica was built in 1974 in the spot where the aspirations of the Virgin were said to have appeared. A trip inside takes you to a display of the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe impressed on the cloak of Saint Juan Diego. Each year, approximately 10 million people travel to this shrine, making it one of the largest Catholic pilgrimages in the world. The biggest crusade happens each year on December 12, the feast day of this manifestation of the Virgin Mary.

Our Lady of Guadalupe ( Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, in Spanish) is sometimes referred to as Our Lady of Tepeyac or the Virgin of Guadalupe, and is a manifestation of an apparition of the Virgin Mary that first appeared on a hill outside Mexico City. A native Mexican peasant named Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin was said to have had his first sighting in 1531. The apparition asked him to speak to the bishop and tell him that she wished a temple be built in her honor. He immediately went to the bishop who required some sort of sign as proof. So, Juan Diego returned to the aspiration and she told him to pick roses, carry them in his  tilma (cloak), and take them to the bishop. He did so, and when he opened his cloak and the flowers fell out, all were astounded to see an image of the Virgin miraculously imprinted on his garment.

After that, a simple shrine was built on Tepeyac Hill in 1532, and it soon became a pilgrimage site. A new shrine was erected in 1622, and a more elaborate one in 1709, which was designated a basilica in 1904. The church eventually became inadequate for the number of people who visited the shrine, and the grand basilica that stands today was then erected in the 1970s. Juan Diego's tilma,  with the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, is displayed inside the Basilica of Guadalupe, situated over a moving walkway behind the altar, allowing people to view it up close.

Architecture

The Basilica de Guadalupe's architecture was inspired by other 17th century churches in Mexico. When the basilica was completed, some visitors made disparaging remarks about its design, likening it to a circus tent. However, the particular design was purposeful, as the soft subsoil on which it is built required this type of lightweight construction. The basilica's circular floorplan—100 meters or 328 feet in diameter—was thoughtfully arranged to allow views of the Virgin from any spot inside the building. To guarantee that the new church would not sink, as the old structure did due to unstable land, the new basilica was built with a central 42-meter (137-foot)-high pylon.

The Old Basilica

Upon your visit, you will see that the church is divided into two sections, the old basilica, and the modern basilica. The old part of the building was built between 1695 and 1709, and is located on one side of the main basilica. Inside the old basilica are marble statues of Fray Juan de Zumárraga, the archbishop at the time of the original construction, and Juan Diego, the peasant who saw the apparition. In 1921, a bomb planted by a terrorist caused great destruction to the inside of the basilica, but did not harm the cloak. Today, a cross stands in display in memory of this incident. Behind the old basilica lies a museum of religious art, as well as steps leading to the Capilla del Cerrito , the "hill chapel," which was built on the exact spot at the top of the hill where the Virgin is believed to have appeared to Juan Diego.

The New Basilica

Built between 1974 and 1976, the new basilica, constructed on the site of the 16th century "old basilica," was built when the older church's foundation began to sink. Designed by Pedro Ramirez Vasquez (an architect who also designed the National Museum of Anthropology ), the new church has a circular floor plan that can accommodate up to 10,000 people. The main floor consists of a choir space, located between the congregation and the altar, and two chapels (a small space containing its own altar) on either side. The upper floor contains nine chapels, and the basement houses the church's crypts, 15,000 niches, and 10 chapels. Additionally, the immense plaza in front of the basilica has room for 50,000 worshipers. On December 12, the feast day of the Virgin of Guadalupe ( Día de la Virgen de Guadalupe ), thousands of people use this space to gather outside.

Visiting Basilica de Guadalupe

  • Best Time to Visit: If you want to avoid crowds, the best time to visit the basilica is on a weekday during non-holiday times. However, if you're up for people-watching, Día de la Virgen de Guadalupe and Día de la Candelaria , February 2, will provide you with the full experience. The grounds are so expansive that, even during a crowded holiday, you can still find a quiet spot to check out. Watch the weather and opt for a cool day to visit, so that you can wander around the grounds free from the oppressive heat.
  • Location: The basilica is located at Fray Juan de Zumárraga No. 2, Villa Gustavo A. Madero, Mexico City, Mexico.
  • Hours: The basilica is open daily from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday to Sunday, and closed on Mondays.
  • Tours: Several third-party tour groups conduct tours of the Basilica de Guadalupe. You can book a combined tour for under $50 USD per person, and see the Teotihuacan archeological site, and the site of the Tlatelolco massacre, as well.

Getting There

The Basilica de Guadalupe is located in the northern part of Mexico City, approximately 7 miles from downtown, in an area called Villa de Guadalupe Hidalgo, or simply "la Villa." From downtown Mexico City, you can take the Line 7 bus for a 17-minute ride, and then walk approximately 1,190 feet to the church. You can also take the Line 4 subway for a 33-minute ride, and then walk north two blocks along Calzada de Guadalupe. Lastly, hire a taxi for a 10-minute jaunt to Basilica de Guadalupe, costing you no more than $5 USD.

Our Guadalupe trip was awesome!! Our tour guide Are was most polite, knowledgeable and most patient. We were able to visit many churches aside from the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe which turned out to be very emotional. The boat tour at the canals was truly special and fun. We learned much of the Mexican traditions, history and culture. Hotel Geneve was extraordinarily beautiful. The rooms were a good size, beds very comfortable and service excellent. Meals - awesome especially the tacos in the street food tour. I finished all 5 of them! Hotel Location - very good! You go down to eat and shop...very convenient and safe. Tour Experience - enjoyable to the max. I think going to the cultural show was great! This should be part of the itinerary or a similar one at least. Are, our guide went out of his way to have a church opened for us to see. That was super of him to ask the priest. Monkey Exprerience accommodated all our reasonable requests being 4 ladies of 70+ years old. We asked to pace our tours and they happily accommodated us. Paco Reyes picked us up at the airport upon arrival. He gave us a very warm reception and was very respectful and helpful. He also bade us farewell upon departure. Both Are and Paco were very personable and always smiling. We 4 ladies had so much fun on this tour!! I give We Travel a 10! Thank you for the awesome experience!!

Every day was a great day! We thoroughly enjoyed our daily tours. Ari, our tour guide was very knowledgeable in introducing us to your very rich Mexican culture. He was also very prompt in our schedule and in addition was so willing to help and be our protector in every way as in 4 senior (70+) ladies still very active. We have become very close to him and will remember him when we think of our Guadalupe trip. Mexico is so rich in culture, fine art, language and food. It was an eye opener and completely changed my view of Mexico. I have been to Italy, France, Spain but Mexico City ranks as a must city to visit much like in the grand cities of Europe and to see its golden age of Spanish influence and its prehistory rich culture of early Mexico. I encourage you all and will let my friends and relatives know and to use your agency for their Mexico City trip. UNFORGETABLE, EXCITING, INFORMATIVE AND MEMORABLE. I have been home for 2 days and want to go back and explore more. Love love love Mexico City. Thank you, Thank you and Thank you very much.... We Travel and The Monkey Experience. Viva Mexico.

  • Chevron down Basílica of Guadalupe

The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, located in Mexico City, is one of the most revered Catholic shrines in the world. It holds significant cultural, religious, and historical importance, drawing millions of pilgrims and visitors each year.

The basilica complex comprises two main churches: the Old Basilica, built-in 1709, and the New Basilica, completed in 1976 to accommodate the growing number of devotees. The focal point of devotion is the image of the Virgin Mary, known as Our Lady of Guadalupe or La Virgen Morena, enshrined in the New Basilica.

The story behind the basilica dates back to 1531 when, according to Catholic tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared to a local indigenous man named Juan Diego on the hill of Tepeyac. She asked him to build a church in her honor. As a sign for the bishop, she left her image imprinted on Juan Diego’s cloak (tilma). This miraculous image, displaying the dark-skinned Virgin Mary, became a powerful symbol of Mexican identity and faith.

The Old Basilica houses the revered tilma and features Spanish Baroque architecture, characterized by its ornate design and historic significance. However, due to structural issues and the increasing number of visitors, the New Basilica was constructed nearby. It is a modern architectural marvel designed by architect Pedro Ramirez Vazquez and offers a circular design that allows for better visitor flow and accommodation.

a person standing in front of a building

The Basilica of Guadalupe stands not just as a religious site but also as a testament to the cultural fusion between Catholicism and indigenous beliefs in Mexico. It serves as a site of pilgrimage, prayer, and celebration, with ceremonies and processions occurring frequently, especially on significant dates related to the Virgin of Guadalupe.

Overall, the Basilica of Guadalupe holds profound spiritual significance for Catholics and serves as a symbol of faith, hope, and unity for people from Mexico and beyond.

Mexico City and the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe

Our Catholic pilgrimage will take you to the heart of Mexico’s vibrant faith and culture. Mexico City is both the oldest (founded in 1325) and the highest (2,200 meters above sea level) metropolis on the North American continent. And with nearly 24 million inhabitants, it is the most populous city in the world. At the southern edge of the Mesa Central region of the Plateau of Mexico, the city remains Mexico’s industrial, financial, cultural, and political core. Together, we walk with Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Mother of the New Evangelization as she was described by Blessed Pope John Paul II. As our Blessed Mother leads us closer to Jesus, we will deepen our Catholic identity and respond to the challenge to be better stewards of God’s gracious gifts!

Day 1: Arrival in Mexico

This morning, you will make your way to your local airport for your flight(s) to Mexico City. Depending on the time of your arrival, Mass is projected to be at a Church (or at hotel). Dinner and overnight at the Hotel.

Day 2: Mexico City - Mexico City Historical Centre- Blessed Miguel Pro

This morning your day begins with breakfast, followed by a visit to the Plaza of Santo Domingo (Please note that the Church of Santo Domingo is closed on Mondays).

This Plaza has many reasons of interest such as the “evangelists” court (wage writers) that in the past wrote letters for the illiterate. The Church of Santo Domingo stands on the same site where after the conquest the Dominicans built their first temple. The current construction dates back to the 18th century and was designed by the same architect (Pedro de Arrieta) who built the old Basilica at the Shrine of our Lady of Guadalupe.

Inside the temple you will see several chapels one of which is dedicated to the Virgin of the Rosary. Here we would like to invite you to pray the rosary. Another chapel is dedicated to the Spanish Virgin of Covadonga, patroness of the Asturian Immigrants; the Chapel dedicated to the “Lord of the Rebozo” and the Chapel dedicated to the “Lady of Sorrows”.

We will than continue to the Church of Santiago Tlatelolco, where St. Juan Diego was baptized. This area is important as it symbolizes the unique blend of pre-Hispanic and Hispanic cultures that make up Mexico. We will visit the oldest and largest Cathedral in all Latin America, the Metropolitan Cathedral. Throughout your time in the Cathedral, you will be overwhelmed by the stunning paintings, altar pieces, and statues as well as the National Palace (from outside) that has been a building of the ruling class of Mexico since the Aztec Empire.

Time for lunch and some rest. In the afternoon we will visit Holy Family Church, where you will view the tomb of Bl. Miguel Agustin Pro, the Jesuit martyr. In the Mexican Revolution, a time of great religious persecution occurred in Mexico and Fr. Pro was exiled from Mexico. However, he returned to Mexico and was aided by a clandestine group who helped him hide from authorities. During the persecution, he assisted many individuals in their spiritual, as well as temporal needs. Although he helped many, he was eventually arrested and killed. His final words before the firing squad were “Viva Cristo Rey! (Long Live Christ the King!)”

At this Church, you can pray to this great martyr and venerate his relics. We will have time for celebrating a Mass here. We will also visit the small, but very inspiring Museum dedicated to Blessed Miguel Pro (closed on Sundays) . Before returning to our Hotel, we will visit the actual place where Bl. Miguel was shot. Dinner and overnight at our Hotel.

Day 3: Tulpetlac - Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe

After breakfast, transfer to the Church of the 5th apparition in Tulpetlac, where the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Bernardino, Juan Diego’s uncle. Here you will find a well of healing water which locals still use. We continue to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Patroness of the Americas). We will visit the Shrine, built in response to Our Lady’s request to St Juan Diego. Upon arrival at the Shrine, you will join the other pilgrims as you kneel in front of the centuries old tilma where Our Lady’s image was miraculously printed. Private Mass will be celebrated in one of the upper chapels. Next, you climb Tepeyac hill, visit the Old Basilica, the Chapel of the Indians, and the Chapel of the Well. We will have lunch nearby, followed by time for prayer and shopping. In the late afternoon, we return to the hotel to enjoy a delicious dinner and rest for the next day.

Day 4: Mexico City – Querétaro - Guanajuato

After breakfast, check out from your hotel and we depart early for Queretaro City. Mass at the Church of the Cross and have a short visit to the Franciscan Monastery where Fr. Junipero Sierra started his evangelization and founded the Franciscan Missions (some of them being in California). We will also learn more about the life of Fr. Antonio Margil de Jesus, who was stationed at the missionary college of Santa Cruz Queretaro. It is said that one day on his way back from preaching, Fr. Margil stuck his walking cane on the ground in the garden of the courtyard adjoining the monastery. After several days, people noticed that where the cane was stuck, sprouts began to grow, eventually becoming a tree. The miraculous tree produced neither flowers nor fruits, but a series of small thorns each in the form of a cross. The tree can still be seen in the monastery courtyard today. Time for lunch and in the afternoon, we will have time to enjoy the beautiful city of Queretaro with the Parish of the Sacred Heart of Jesus “Of St. Claire”, the Temple of Santa Rosa de Viterbo, which is a magnificent example of Mexican Colonial Barroque. Departure to Guanajuato. Dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Guanajuato - Cerro Del Cubilete – Guanajuato

After breakfast, early departure to the Cerro del Cubilete to celebrate Mass (reservation to be done with 6 months in advance). The Cerro of Cubilete is a special emblematic site for the Cristeros. It was bombed in 1928 by the Mexican government which led to the famous refrain of the Cristero Revolution: “Viva Cristo Rey!” It was reconstructed after the Cristero revolution in 1944 and finished in 1950. The monument of Christ the King weighs 80 tons and is 120 feet high. At the base of El Cerro del Cubilete is the Shrine of Santa Maria de los Martires where we will see the relics of three Cristeros: Fr. Jose Trinidad Rangel Montano, Fr. Andres Sola y Molist, and Sr. Leonardo Perez Larios.

Lunch and we will visit Guanajuato, where we will immerse into its unique atmosphere, walking through its colorful narrow streets, admiring from outside the architecture of the Juarez Theater, Plaza Baratillo, Guanajuato University. We will also see the Templo de la Compañia de Jesus, one of the largest constructions completed by the Jesuits in Mexico – this Church was built between 1746 and 1765. However, just two years after the construction was completed, the Jesuits were expelled from the country and the guild schools and Jesuit college were closed. Another jewel of Guanajuato is the orange-yellow Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Guanajuato, which contains an image of the Virgin, patroness of the city. We will also see beautiful San Fernando square and the Church of Belen. After a delightful day, we’ll be on our way to hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 6: Guanajuato - San Juan De Los Lagos – Santa Ana de Guadalupe - Guadalajara

After breakfast, we will depart for San Juan de Los Lagos. We start with a visit to the Cathedral Basilica of Nuestra Senora de San Juan de los Lagos, the second most visited Catholic center in Mexico (after the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe). The image of the Immaculate Virgin of the Conception was brought here by Fr. Miguel de Bolonia. Thousands of pilgrims come to the city to pay tribute to a small image of the Virgin Mary titled “Our Lady of San Juan de los Lagos.” The image is very small, about 1.25 feet tall. It is made of corn cane paste and believed to have been brought to the area from Michoacan in the early 1500s. The first important miracle associated with the image dates back to 1623. A family of acrobats performed a show which included “flying” over a field of spear points. The 7-year-old daughter fell onto the spears during the act and died immediately. Local women brought the image to the body and prayed over her, and the child revived! This miracle made the image famous. Since then, many other miracles have been attributed to Mary’s intercession, often saving people from mortal danger or dangerous illness. Mass will be celebrated at the Basilica. Our journey will follow to Santa Ana de Guadalupe and visit the house and the Shrine of San Toribio Romo, a martyr. San Toribio is known as the patron of migrants, and we will have time to pray in front of his relics. We will continue to the city of Guadalajara for dinner and overnight.

Day 7: Sahuayo - Guadalajara

After breakfast, we departure for Sahuayo. We will dedicate this morning to St. Jose Sanchez del Rio, the youngest of the Cristero martyrs. He was canonized on October 14, 2016. We will celebrate Mass at the Church of St James where St. Jose (Joselito) was taken prisoner by the federal troops. We will have time to pray in front of his relics. Next, we visit the cemetery where St. Joselito bravely declared his loyalty to Christ. As he was being tortured, he cried out “Viva Cristo Rey!” We have lunch, then return to Guadalajara. In Guadalajara, we visit the Cathedral with the ossuary consisting of a glass cabinet that exhibits the bones of 23 of the martyred saints of the Cristero Revolution, followed by a visit of the city center with its historical buildings and government palaces, as well as the elegant Degollado Theater. Dinner and overnight in Guadalajara.

Day 8: Guadalajara - Return Home

This morning you will make your way to the airport for your return flight(s) from Guadalajara’s Airport to your final destination.

About your trip

About guadalupe:.

The Shrine at Guadalupe is considered the holiest place in the Western Hemisphere. St. John Paul II preached to millions of the faithful from this holy Shrine during his 1979 visit to Mexico. The Basilica commemorates the Virgin Mary’s appearance to a humble Indian and honors her request that a Shrine be built in Her honor. In December of 1531, Juan Diego informed a skeptical bishop of his encounter with Mary. A few days later, Juan returned to the site of the vision and once again Our Mother appeared. The humble man relayed the bishop’s request for proof of Her visitation, whereupon the Virgin instructed Juan to gather roses from the frozen, rocky terrain and present them to the bishop. Remarkably for the cool season, he found a great number of roses strewn all around. Gathering the roses in sackcloth, he hurriedly took them to the bishop. When he opened the cloak to present the roses to the cleric, it was not Only *the blooms that amazed the bishop. Stamped on the humble cloth was an image of the Virgin! The same miraculous image exists for you to see, hanging in splendor above the main altar.
