Flight booking platform launched by World Travel Centre
A new flight booking platform, “designed by travel agents for travel agents” has been launched by World Travel Centre (WTC).
The Fareteam platform is available to agents in both the UK and Ireland.
Its Agent Booking Tool offers access to thousands of fares that are bookable at the click of a button. Global Distribution Services and New Distribution Capability fares are available.
Fareteam says it offers value and efficiency benefits to every size of business, from the one-man band to multi-branch operations.
Aidan Coghlan, Group Managing Director of WTC, believes travel agencies are searching for “simple access to the best value air content” as the industry begins to emerge from the Covid crisis.
“At WTC we used the Covid hiatus to invest and develop Fareteam with an aim to make our customers more competitive and efficient now that demand for long-haul travel is returning,” he said.
“Crucially, Fareteam embraces New Distribution Capability (NDC) where available, in addition to the traditional GDS content. We hope to help customers successfully negotiate this shift and provide them with access to cheaper fares and content not available in the GDS.
Travel agents can request a demo before signing up to the platform.

Flight Centre Travel Group (FCTG) is one of the world’s largest travel groups with a vast leisure and corporate travel sales network that extends throughout four major regions: Australia and New Zealand, The Americas (specifically the United States, Canada and Mexico), EMEA (the United Kingdom, South Africa, Ireland, Europe and the United Arab Emirates), and Asia (including India, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Japan).
To open up the world for those who want to see.
Irreverence
We take our business seriously but not ourselves. We respect our customers, our partners and each other. At FCTG we live this value through: - Continually recognising and celebrating our individual and collective successes - Acknowledging effort over outcome - Learning from failures
Egalitarianism
Everyone has the same opportunities, rights and privileges. Self important people don’t fit in. There is no “us and them”. We live this value through: - Our simple, lean, flat, and transparent structure (Family, Village, Tribe). - Our leaders being extremely open and accessible. - Open-plan offices and stores (you won’t see a fancy mahogany corner office around here).
To be the world's most exciting and profitable travel retailer, personally delivering amazing experiences to our people, our customers and our partners.
We take full responsibility for our business and treat it as our own. At FCTG we live this value through: - Outcome-based incentives and profit share - Our Employee and Leadership Share Plans - Our Business Ownership Scheme
After starting with one shop in the early 1980s, FCTG has enjoyed remarkable ongoing growth under its founder and CEO, Graham “Skroo” Turner. The company now has more than 30 brands, including the flagship Flight Centre leisure travel brand. Key corporate brands include Corporate Traveller and FCM. In addition, FCTG’s global corporate travel management network, FCM, extends to about 90 other countries through strategic licensing agreements with independent local operators. Flight Centre Travel Group has been listed on the Australian Securities Exchange since 1995 and currently has a market capitalisation in the order of $AU 4.7 billion. The company has twice been judged Australia’s best employer, in addition to claiming a number of other employer and travel agency awards in Australia and overseas.
Where We Have Been
We are not an overnight success story. Our success happened over many years of persistence and hard work by a lot of people…many of whom still work with us today after many decades. A clear set of values and a tried and tested business model are core to the FCTG DNA and have enabled scalable growth, from the original double decker bus in the 70's, to discount airfares in the 80's, through to quadrupling the number of shops and increasing profit from $4.4 M to $43M in the 90's. And then even into the 2000's, a worldwide financial crisis in 2008 could not stop FCTG’s genetic predisposition to continue to grow, with nearly 3000 shops in 14 countries and a cracking $345M in profit by 2016. Fast forward to 2020 and a world-wide pandemic changed the FCTG landscape forever, but we emerged stronger and more resilient than ever before. The backbone of Flight Centre’s organisational structure is the stone age concept of Family, Village, Tribe. Our structure is simple, lean, flat and transparent, with accessible leaders. Our business model is centred on being one of the world’s best and biggest small business operators. When it was implemented in the mid 1990s, it would become the most significant crossroad for the company’s evolution, providing the framework for Flight Centre to make the transition from small company to big corporation without imploding. It also set the benchmark in corporate excellence and even today, companies look to Flight Centre as a business model for its successful organisational structure.

We have big goals and we have a strong track record of meeting them. The success of our leisure model is measured through growth. This includes growth in customer numbers, growth in Total Travel Value (TTV) and growth in market share.
The FCTG strategy has also been to create new specialized brands to allow us to capture and grow key market segments. The FCTG business leisure model despite significant margin and cost pressures has still developed a strong presence in key sectors that include:
- In-destination travel experiences, an area that includes Top Deck, Back-Roads and Discova, our in-destination management joint venture in Asia;
- A travel investment and acceleration hub that allows it to identify and invest in innovative travel-related start-ups;
- Significant growth in the corporate sector;
- Significant growth in the premium travel sector;
- Non-travel businesses; and
- Sustained strong growth in the leisure market.
The next period of growth taking us through to 2025, our goals include an to increase our distribution and supply networks, expand our omni-channel approach and sure up our low cost models. This, coupled with productivity gains in our core consultant model, will see us deliver a global net margin across all our leisure models.
Destination 2035
By 2035, FCTG is driven to become the world’s largest and most successful corporate travel company with operations in more than 50 countries, and 80,000 employees across the globe.
And in the year 2035, the Flight Centre Travel Group will be delivering incredible results across a range of sectors, from travel, bikes, fitness, education, to foreign exchange and finance.
We know where we want to go, and with our strong team of dedicated, driven people, we know we’re going to get there. No other company has had the physical and philosophical capability to copy this strategy.
FCTG will continue to grow to become the world’s most exciting and profitable travel retailer, delivering amazing experiences to all of their people, their partners and their customers. And we will always, have at our core, our purpose – to open up the world for those who want to see.
Our Philosophies
Our Philosophies have been a part of the FCTG DNA since the 80’s. Not only do they shape the way we do business with our customers and our partners, they also shape the working environment for our people. Our philosophies are our beliefs and define us as a company. They are the backbone of our extraordinary culture, supporting our vision, our values and what makes us Flight Centre Travel Group.
Our Values are made up of the five philosophies that are our guiding principles around what we hold true as a company.
Our company is our people. We care for our people’s health and wellbeing, their personal and professional development and their financial security. We believe that work should be challenging and fun for everyone.
Our Customer
Our customers always have a choice and we care about personally delivering amazing travel experiences to them, whatever it takes.
Brightness of Future
Our supportive work community provides an inspiring and challenging careers path for committed people. Promotion and transfers from within will always be our first choice and will give our people the exciting opportunity to move globally across our company.
Taking Responsibility
We take full responsibility for our own successes or failures. We do not externalise. We accept that we have total ownership and responsibility, but not always control.
Egalitarianism and Unity
Everyone has the same opportunities, rights and privileges. Self important people don’t fit in. There is no “us and them”.
Our Business Model
These speak to the way we operate our business. The focuses are core to how our business was built and how we will continue to build our business into the future.
We treat the business as our own and have the opportunity to share in our company’s financial success with access to share programs, outcomes based incentives and profit share.
Reward and Recognition
We recognise and celebrate our individual and collective successes with recognition and rewards which are based on measurable outcome based quantitative KPIs. What gets rewarded gets done is our basic principle and we reward outcomes not behaviour.
One Best Way
In each of our businesses there is ‘one best way’ to operate globally. We value common sense over conventional wisdom in running our business. We foster entrepreneurial thinking to continuously find better ways to innovate and improve.
Family, Village, Tribe
Our structure is simple, lean, flat and transparent, with accessible leaders and minimal layers between the customer and the CEO. Everyone belongs to a family (team), which is the most important group at FCTG, who are supported by a ‘self-help’ village, and a tribe.
Profit We Are Proud Of
A fair margin resulting in a business profit we can be proud of is the key measure of whether we really are providing our customers with an amazing experience, amazing product and a caring and respectful service – an experience customer genuinely value.

Americans who have traveled internationally stand out in their views and knowledge of foreign affairs
Do people who travel think differently about the world? A new Pew Research Center survey suggests they do.
Americans who have traveled internationally are more interested in and knowledgeable about foreign affairs, feel closer to others around the world, and favor a more active foreign policy, according to the survey of 3,576 U.S. adults conducted in spring 2023. We also surveyed people in 23 other countries about their international travel habits.
This analysis examines international travel with a focus on Americans’ travel, including which Americans travel abroad and how their interest in the world and views of international affairs differ from others.
For this analysis, we surveyed 3,576 U.S. adults from March 20 to March 26, 2023; 3,581 U.S. adults from March 21 to March 27, 2022; and 10,606 U.S. adults from June 14 to June 27, 2021. Everyone who took part in these surveys is a member of the Center’s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. Read more about the ATP’s methodology .
For non-U.S. data, this report draws on nationally representative surveys of 27,285 adults conducted from Feb. 20 to May 22, 2023. All surveys were conducted over the phone with adults in Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, South Korea, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Surveys were conducted face-to-face in Hungary, Poland, India, Indonesia, Israel, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Argentina, Brazil and Mexico. In Australia, we used a mixed-mode probability-based online panel.
Here are the June 2021 survey questions and responses used in this analysis. Those for the March 2022 survey may be found here , as well as those for the March 2023 survey .
How many Americans have traveled internationally?
Roughly three-quarters of Americans (76%) have visited at least one other country, including 26% who have been to five or more. About a quarter (23%) have not traveled internationally, though most in this group say they would if they had the opportunity.
Related: How experience with international travel varies across 24 countries
To analyze how Americans’ travel experiences relate to their attitudes on other questions, we placed people into three categories:
- Globe-trotters have traveled to at least five other countries. About a quarter of the U.S. public (26%) falls into this category.
- Casual travelers have traveled to between one and four other countries. Half of Americans fall into this category.
- Nontravelers have never left the United States. This category includes 23% of Americans.
Compared with Americans, people in many European nations are more likely to have traveled to five or more other countries. For instance, 88% of Swedes have done so.
However, international travel is much less common in many middle-income nations. It is strongly correlated with a nation’s gross domestic product per capita. (For more on international travel and views about global engagement, read “Attitudes on an Interconnected World.” )
Who travels internationally?
Perhaps unsurprisingly, older people are more likely than younger people to have traveled internationally. Americans ages 65 and older are more than twice as likely as adults under 30 to fall into our globe-trotter category (37% vs. 17%).
Income is even more strongly related to travel than age. Two-thirds of upper-income Americans have traveled to at least five countries, compared with 9% of Americans with lower incomes.
Similarly, Americans with a postgraduate degree are far more likely to be globe-trotters than those with a high school education or less (59% vs. 10%).
Residents of suburban and urban areas generally have more international travel experience than people who live in rural areas.
There are no significant partisan differences when it comes to international travel: 26% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents qualify as globe-trotters, as do 28% of Republicans and GOP leaners.
Do travelers know more about the world?
Globe-trotters are especially likely to say they are interested in foreign affairs and follow international news. Casual travelers, in turn, are more likely than nontravelers to do so.
Globe-trotters are also the most knowledgeable about international affairs. In 2022, we conducted an international affairs quiz , asking Americans 12 questions related to international news. On average, globe-trotters got 8.2 of the 12 questions correct, compared with 6.4 for casual travelers and 4.2 for nontravelers.
Is international travel related to views of global engagement?
International travel experience is also linked to Americans’ views about international affairs and their feelings of connection to other people around the world.
When asked which comes closest to their view, 57% of globe-trotters say the U.S. should be active in world affairs, while 43% say the U.S. should pay less attention to problems in other countries and concentrate on problems at home. In contrast, most casual travelers and nontravelers say the U.S. should focus on problems at home.
In all three groups, at least half of respondents say that when the U.S. is making foreign policy, it should take other countries’ interests into account – even if that means making compromises. But globe-trotters are especially likely to hold that view.
Globe-trotters are also particularly likely to say they feel close to people around the world, with 42% saying so. By comparison, 34% of casual travelers and 30% of nontravelers say this.

As the global travel and tourism industry gears up for the prestigious Arabian Travel Market (ATM) Dubai 2024 from 6th to 9th May 2024 at the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), there's one destination that's poised to make a significant impact – Goa , India. Renowned for its pristine beaches, rich cultural heritage, and vibrant communities, Goa is set to showcase its commitment to sustainable tourism at ATM Dubai 2024 with this year’s theme: Transforming Travel Through Entrepreneurship. The Goa Tourism Pavilion at ATM Dubai will feature sustainable initiatives under the Regenerative Tourism approach which will focus on the pillars under this approach like hinterland exploration, restoration and replenish heritage sites, a journey towards spiritual tourism , and much more. Along with the 11 temples under the Ekadasha Teertha circuit and the exposition of St. Francis Xaviers at the Basilica of Bom Jesus, Old Goa, which is scheduled to take place after a decade, this year from November 21st 2024 until January 5th, 2025. Advt Suneel Anchipaka, IAS, Director Tourism & Managing Director GTDC said " The Goa Tourism pavilion will reflect the traditional, historical significance and the rich cultural heritage of Goa under Regenerative Tourism. There will be approximately 17 co-exhibitors like tour and travel operators, wedding planners, as we have roped in various planners and MICE representatives. One of our main focus will be on promoting MICE tourism in a massive manner, along with this, the Department of Tourism is in the process of forming the single window Wedding in Goa policy; to rope in more tourists as part of this initiative at ATM Dubai. Goa became the first state to launch Regenerative Tourism with hinterland tourism, spiritual tourism and various MICE tourism under it, all these initiatives are to attract inbound tourists and especially quality tourists. Through this mart, we aim to promote tourism within GCC countries, which have high-spending tourists so that they can visit Goa and explore the hidden gems our state has to offer. Through joint efforts with the Indian Embassy in Dubai, UAE, we underscore our commitment to engage with the global Goan community and harness their support in promoting Goa as a sustainable tourism destination, reinforcing their role as ambassadors for our region on the global stage. Events like ATM Dubai, the Goan diaspora not only strengthens ties between Goa and Dubai but also contributes to the growth of tourism in their homeland.” From May 6 to May 9, 2024, at the ATM Dubai at the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), Stand No: AS7259, visitors to the Goa Pavilion will be treated to an immersive experience highlighting the region's pioneering initiatives in sustainable tourism. At the heart of our showcase is the concept of regenerative tourism – an approach that goes beyond conservation to actively restore and replenish natural and cultural resources while enhancing the well-being of local communities. Goa Tourism’s pavilion will exhibit the best of what Goa has to offer with the presence of Hon’ble Minister of Tourism, Mr. Rohan A Khaunte, Mr. Suneel Anchipaka, IAS, Director Tourism & Managing Director GTDC, Mr. Kuldeep Arolkar, Deputy Director Tourism, Government of Goa, Mr. Shawn Mendes, OSD to Tourism Minister and Mrs. Chitra Vengurlekar, Assistant Tourist Officer, Department of Tourism, Government of Goa, along with co-exhibitors from leading industries like tour operators, hoteliers and wedding planners. ATM Dubai’s theme for 2024 is on sustainable tourism and Goa being the first state to launch Regenerative Tourism, showcases just that; Sustainable & Responsible Tourism. Advt Goa Tourism’s participation at ATM Dubai isn't just about showcasing Goa's cultural and spiritual treasures – it's also about promoting sustainable practices that benefit both the environment and local communities. Through the pavilion, the state aims to inspire travelers to make conscious choices that support responsible tourism and contribute to the long-term well-being of our planet. At Goa's Pavilion, visitors can expect interactive exhibits, engaging discussions, and immersive experiences that highlight the symbiotic relationship between tourism and sustainability.

Ukraine-Russia war latest: 'Putin did not order Navalny death,' - US report; Another arrest over Moscow concert hall attack
US intelligence agencies have suggested Vladimir Putin most likely did not order Alexei Navalny to be killed, according to the Wall Street Journal. Meanwhile, a 12th person has been arrested over a shooting massacre last month at Moscow concert hall, in which 133 people were killed.

The Russian defence ministry has responded to this morning's attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
It said it had carried out 35 strikes in the last week against energy facilities, defence factories, railway infrastructure, air defences, and ammunition stocks in Ukraine.
The strikes were "in response to attempts by the Kyiv regime to damage Russian energy and industrial facilities", it said.
Ukraine has been targeting Russian oil refineries and other facilities in drone attacks in recent weeks, despite US requests not to do so.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials said Russian missiles had pounded power facilities in central and western Ukraine today.
Russia's defence ministry said it had used sea and air-launched long-range precision weapons, including Kinzhal hypersonic missiles and drones.
It also said it had targeted Ukrainian troop formations and what it called foreign mercenaries.
Anti-tank fortifications, known as "dragon's teeth", have been set up in the eastern region of Donetsk.
As we've mentioned, Russia has been pushing in the Avdiivka direction and is aiming to reach the strategic town of Chasiv Yar.
A 52-year-old Ukrainian has been injured after a Russian drone strike hit a truck he was driving, a local governor has said.
Oleh Syniehubov, the governor of Kharkiv, said the man was taken to hospital in a serious condition.
He said Russian forces used an FPV drone to hit the truck at around 1pm local time near Vovchansk, a city located less than 10km from the Russian border.
As we mentioned in our previous post, Russia is aiming to capture the eastern Ukrainian town of Chasiv Yar at all costs.
The town sits in Ukraine's Donetsk region, less than 10km west of the occupied city of Bakhmut.
Russian forces have been pushing forward in eastern Ukraine following their capture of Avdiivka in February, and have been swallowing up villages in the area.
But Chasiv Yar is the key goal for Russia, which is using a grouping of more than 20,000 soldiers to attack the town.
Ukraine is both outgunned and outnumbered in its defence, but it does have the advantage that Chasiv Yar lies on high ground which serves as a natural defensive structure.
The town has the highest point in the area, and is divided in the east by the Siverskyi Donets-Donbas canal.
Chasiv Yar was used as a Ukrainian stronghold when Russia initially invaded the Donbas region in 2014.
It hosted a key military hospital and also served as the headquarters for the Joint Forces Operation.
Ukraine has been using the town as a regrouping hub and fire support base during the full-scale invasion that started in 2022.
There is another reason Russia has its sights set on the town.
The capture of Chasiv Yar would pave the way for Russia to launch a broader offensive in the Donetsk region - which is currently about 50% under Russian control.
Russia has already reached the outskirts of Chasiv Yar, and Ukrainian officials have warned Moscow wants to seize the town by Russia's military holiday on 9 May.
The Kremlin has said that it will explore ways to overcome what it called any illegal sanctions the European Union imposes on its liquified natural gas (LNG).
Earlier this week three EU sources said the European Commission's next sanctions package is expected to propose restrictions on LNG for the first time.
The proposal would not ban imports of Russian LNG to Europe, but instead target trans-shipments, which move gas from one vessel to another that then sails onto its final destination.
The transfers are usually done in port areas.
Reacting, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: "Attempts to squeeze Russia out of energy markets and switch to more expensive markets are continuing.
"Of course, in any case, we will look for ways to overcome these illegal obstacles, unfair competition and illegal actions."
Why sanctions on LNG now?
The EU announced a ban on Russian seaborne oil imports soon after the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, but the bloc has stopped short of prohibiting LNG, despite repeated calls by the Baltic states and Poland.
But Russia supplies the EU with 40% of its gas and 30% of its oil.
In fact, imports of Russian LNG to Europe have increased since the war began, with Belgium, France, and Spain the biggest takers.
Finding an alternative LNG provider would have to be coordinated by the West.
Moscow has sent more troops to the village of Ocheretyne in eastern Ukraine to reinforce their offensive there, the Ukrainian military has said.
Russian troops have been slowly advancing through at least half a dozen villages on the eastern front after capturing the town of Avdiivka in February.
While fierce fighting rages in Ocheretyne today, a spokesman for Ukraine's eastern command said his forces had the situation "under control" and that they still controlled two-thirds of the village.
Nazar Voloshyn said his troops shelled the part of the village seized by Russian forces, adding "the enemy is blocked and measures are being taken to kick them out".
He said he expected military aid from the US to help turn around the situation in the area.
Russian forces are also trying to capture the strategic town of Chasiv Yar at all costs, Mr Voloshyn said.
They have not yet managed to enter the town, which lies on high ground.
A 12th person has been arrested in connection with a shooting massacre in a packed Moscow concert hall last month, according to a Moscow court ruling.
Dzhumakhon Kurbonov is suspected of providing others involved in the attack with money and "telecommunications means".
The court ruled today that he should remain in custody until at least 22 May.
The man is believed to be from Tajikistan, according to Russian news reports.
At the end of last month 11 people, including four gunmen, had been arrested in connection to the incident.
At least 133 people died in the attack on the 6,000-capacity Crocus City Hall, in the western Moscow suburb of Krasnogorsk - making it the second-deadliest single terror attack in Russia's history.
In April 2023 116 Russian military personnel were convicted of murder - 900% higher than the previous year.
The same time this year, Russian media outlet Vertska reported that 190 former convicts were prosecuted again in criminal cases - 20 of whom were for murder or attempted murder.
One of those included an ex-Wagner prisoner who was sentenced to 22 years after murdering an elderly woman after his release.
The UK's Ministry of Defence puts this high number of murders by serving and veteran Russian soldiers down to enduring war-related chronic poor mental health issues.
It says post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and battlefield desensitisation to violence are also likely contributors.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has issued a new appeal for air defence systems after the latest strike on Ukraine's energy sector.
Mr Zelenskyy said Ukraine needed sufficient quantities of air defence and other weapons to protect its cities and prevail on the frontline.
"Terror should always lose, and anyone who helps us stand against Russian terror is a true defender of life," he said.
Earlier, we reported that Ukraine's air force said that it had intercepted 21 out of 34 drones launched across the country.
Energy facilities in Dnipropetrovsk in the south of the country and Ivano-Frankivsk and Lviv in the west had been attacked.
Private energy operator DTEK reported "casualties" after four of its thermal power plants were damaged.
Maxim Timchenko, DTEK chief executive, said the strikes are a cause for stronger defence.
"Last night's attacks underline the continued urgent need for Ukraine's allies to provide stronger air defence systems," he said.
The newest appeal comes in spite of a military aid package from the US which will provide munitions and equipment for its air defence launchers.
One person has died and 14 have been injured after attacks on several regions in Ukraine, local authorities have said.
The areas of Kherson, Donetsk, Kharkiv, and Dnipropetrovsk were all targeted overnight.
In the Kherson region, one person died and eight others were injured, according to governor Oleksandr Prokudin.
While in Kharkiv, Russian forces hit a psychiatric hospital, injuring a 53-year-old patient.
Governor Oleh Syniehubov said 60 patients and five employees were in the hospital at the time.
Russian troops launched a total of 16 attacks against settlements in the Donetsk region, destroying or damaging 12 houses and five other unnamed buildings, Vadym Filashkin, the regional governor, said.
Three people were injured.
Dnipropetrovsk
An 82-year-old woman was injured during several strikes in the Dnipropetrovsk area.
Governor Serhii Lysak said seven blocks of flats, a market and a beauty salon were among the buildings damaged.

The tourist favourites cracking down on overcrowding with entry fees and taxes
Venice's €5 charge to enter its historic centre is a world first. we look at the cities, islands and a village that could try something similar – and which already have tourist taxes.
Venice’s €5 daytripper fee, a ban on new hotels in Amsterdam and plans to charge for entry to a square in Seville are the types of strict new measures sought to curb overcrowding caused by tourism.
Italy’s most tourist-addled city began its new, controversial measure on Thursday in which authorities will choose 30 dates each year to charge the levy. Day tourists will need to pay via a portal that will generate a QR code. During the trial period of the scheme, visitors will be able to pay authorities directly if they are stopped and don’t have a code.
The charge only applies to Venice ’s historic centre, which makes it feasible to have patrols to enforce its payment.
Larger cities, or islands or regions that are experiencing similar problems may struggle to recreate this model.
Bali’s entry fee – and other contenders for the Venice model
The closest example is perhaps Bali, which introduced a tourist levy of around £8 per person on 14 February. Unlike most tourist taxes, it is paid directly by the visitor, rather than being added to hotel room or cruise charges.
Payment for this can be made online or on arrival at designated counters at Bali ’s seaport or airport. However, some reports suggest that only around 60 per cent of visitors have been paying this charge.
Wayan Puspa Negara, a tourism leader, told the Bali Sun that the system “has many holes”.
He suggested that tourist attractions, hotels and restaurants could act as checkpoints to see if visitors have paid.
Since 26 March, officials have been stopping tourists to see if they have the tourism tax levy voucher that is emailed to them once they have made the payment.
Smaller victims of overtourism could be the next contenders for bringing in a form of day visitor entry charge. The Italian city of Como, which received as many as 1.4 million visitors a year has considered a tax that would also apply to daytrippers. Alessandro Rapinese, the mayor of Como, told The Times: “We are already discussing the idea (of a tourist levy). Revolutions begin with concrete measures and we are ready for this long journey.”
An entry fee could also work in Hallstatt, in the mountainous area of Salzkammergut in Austria. The lakeside village of around 800 residents can attract thousands of tourists each day – and up to one million each year – thanks to its resemblance to the town of Arendelle in Frozen .
Residents of the Unesco-listed village protested against tourist crowds last year by installing a fence to block a view that was popular with selfie takers. There were also calls for limits on the number of daytrippers and capping the number of tourist buses that stop in Hallstatt.
Barcelona , meanwhile, has recently found a new tactic for controlling visitor behaviour.
“In Barcelona, removing a bus route from Google Maps appears to have been successful in reducing large tourist numbers from a particular area in the city,” says Siobhán Daly, who has an MSC in responsible tourism management.
She adds: “It is unclear if this technological strategy will have long-term success.”
As a city of more than 1.6 people residents, Barcelona could not effectively recreate the model being tested in Venice. It could go down the route of Seville, however, and charge for entry to the most crowded parts of the city.
In February, Seville’s mayor, José Luis Sanz, wrote on X, formerly Twitter: “We are planning to close Plaza de España and charge tourists to finance its conservation and ensure its safety.”
He specified that locals would still have free access.
For now, Barcelona has raised its tourist tax. Visitors who stay in Barcelona overnight pay €3.25 (£2.80) per day, as well as a regional tourist tax that varies depending on the type of accommodation chosen. People who visit the city on a cruise are charged €6.25 (£5.36).
The city is also phasing out the number of cruise ships that can visit. After the closure of one terminal and the introduction of a one ship per terminal rule, only just ships can dock in the city at one time.
Dubrovnik has faced similar problems to Barcelona with 4.5 million overnight stays recorded in 2023, up 11 per cent compared to 2022. In 2018, its mayor capped the number of cruise ships that could visit the city to two per day.
This month, the city council was set to pass a regulation that would ban new rental permits in the Old Town and its surrounding area. Meanwhile, last summer, Croatia’s second city Split brought it measures to crack down on rowdy visitors, including fines for drinking, sleeping, vomiting or urinating in public places. The highest fines could reach €4,000 (£3,431).
As in many communities negatively affected by mass tourism, a residents’ group was pushing for change.
The protests in the Canary Islands are the most recent, and perhaps loudest, example of a tide of dissent against tourism that encroaches on the lives of residents.
Last Saturday, tens of thousands of protestors marched in the streets of the Canary Islands to call for change from mass tourism.
Tenerife Cabildo, the island’s governing body, has proposed an entry fee to visit natural and protected areas of the island. The measures are being voted for on Friday and will be similar to those in place at Timanfaya National Park in Lanzarote.
However, the Canarian Government has rejected calls for a tourist tax.
The time capsule Dutch city with no tourism bans
Alongside Barcelona and Dubrovnik, tens of destinations across the world have implemented this approach, including Spain’s Balearic Islands, where a per-day fee is applied to accommodation costs.
Dr Lauren A Siegel, a senior lecturer in tourism and events management at the University of Greenwich, says: “There are a spectrum of responses that destinations are taking to address overtourism (which can occur on a small scale in a particularly rural or upcoming destinations).
“[These approaches] range from softer approaches like a campaign to encourage better behaviours, for example, the Icelandic Pledge (where visitors agree to a list of sustainable tourism practices) or the Tiaki Promise in New Zealand (Tiaki means to care for people and place), to stricter actions like limits on arrival numbers.”
Which other places have a tourist tax?
Bhutan has the world’s highest tourist tax, known as a sustainable development fee. It was reduced last year, but it is still $100 a night for adult visitors. The kingdom also requires a $40 (£32) visa for all visitors.
In Europe, Amsterdam has the highest tourist tax. Visitors staying in the city pay a room tax of 12.5 per cent, as well as a €3 (£2.80) per person, per night fee.
Several other European countries, including France, Germany, Greece, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Portugal, Bulgaria, Switzerland, Czechia, and Slovenia charge taxes to overnight tourists in some areas.
Italy, Croatia and the Netherlands also apply tourist levies beyond their most overcrowded cities.
Japan, Malaysia and most Caribbean islands charge a tax while visitors to New Zealand must pay an international visitor conservation and tourism levy of NZ $35 (£16.60).
