What is Travel Club?

Travel Club at ARC was organized to offer fun and informative trips to the Ahwatukee senior community. You will see our list of future trips when you click on "Upcoming Trips & Presentations" above. "Presentations" are meetings in the ARC Main Hall in which trip organizers give information about a trips. They are free and open to anyone planning a trip.

Who can travel on club trips?

Trips are planned with members of ARC in mind, but membership is not necessary to go on a club trip. On occasion space on a trip may be limited, and ARC members will be given priority for available slots.

What's special about Travel Club trips?

Travel Club trips are planned for members of the Ahwatukee Recreation Center (ARC). Since ARC is a 55 and older community where the majority of residents are of retirement age, the needs, desires and special requirements of seniors are taken into consideration. The special features of club trips include ... :

  • Door to door transportation from the Ahwatukee Recreation Center at 5001 E. Cheyenne Drive, Phoenix, is ordinarily included. So is luggage handling (excluding carry-ons). Travelers often leave their vehicles in the ARC parking lot at no cost.
  • Expert guides are often included in extended travel. Even where guided travel is not included (short trips, cruise ships, etc.), members of the Travel Club team will usually be present.
  • Travel with friends so you will never be alone with strangers in a strange land. You'll even have someone to be in your selfie with you! If you don't know your travel companions at the start of the trip, you will make new friends as you become acquainted with your fellow travelers. There will always be someone there who can help show you the way and offer tips or assistance. Longer trips usually have a meeting for all travelers to go over the travel procedures before the start of the trip.
  • Group travel savings come from sharing costs of transportation and taking advantage of group rates and discounts that hotels, resorts and airlines may offer.
  • Research is done for you by members of the Travel Club who research trips extensively, finding the best values, the most interesting destinations, and the best tours.
  • No surprise fees! While almost all expenses for the basic trips are included, some are not—meals and tips, for example (even though some meals and some tips are often covered). Before the trip travelers are advised when to expect additional charges. Don't you just hate it when that hotel you booked surprises you with a resort fee? It won't happen here.

A brief history of the Travel Club

In 1977, five years after the groundbreaking of the golf course country club, the ARC members made their first trip as a group when the Activities Director organized an excursion to Las Vegas. Other trips followed annually. In 1980 a Travel Committee was formed ... which made Canyon de Chelly the destination of their first excursion.

Nordic Prince Postcard c. 1983

Today, Barb continues to organize the club's trips, as well as act as a travel host. In 2000, Dee & Fritz Murrell began acting as travel hosts, as they continue to do today. In addition, Dee assists with trip organization and promotion.

The Fine Print.

Trips are organized and planned by the ARC Travel Club. As verified by ARC audits, the club makes no profit from trips it sells, and neither ARC nor the club nor its officers ... receive commissions, salary or other compensation from travel sold by the club. The club team accompanying members on trips may have a portion or all of their travel expenses comped by travel providers.

The club depends upon B & J Travel, LLC [hereafter, "B & J"] for support and liability coverage. B & J is owned by Barbara LeChaix who is a member of the ARC. The ARC Travel Club and B & J act only as agents for the various suppliers that provide trips, cruises, hotel accommodations, transportation, sightseeing activities, or other services connected with the tours. Such services are subject to the terms and conditions of those suppliers. The ARC Travel Club, B & J and their respective hosts or representatives accept no liability whatsoever for any injury, damage, loss, accident, delay, or any other incident which may be caused by the negligence, defect, default of any company or person in performing these services. Responsibility is not accepted for losses, injury, damages or expenses of any kind due to sickness, weather, strikes, hostilities, wars, terrorist acts, and acts of nature, local law or other such causes. The ARC Travel Club and B & J are not responsible for any baggage or personal effects of any individual participating in the tour/trip arranged by the ARC Travel Club and B & J. Individual travelers are responsible for purchasing a travel insurance policy that will cover some of the expenses of the above situations. B & J does have such insurance available and may receive a commission on insurance premiums. All travelers with the ARC Travel Club will sign a waiver releasing the ARC and its designated hosts from any responsibility of service.

The ARC is providing an opportunity for members and friends to travel together. The Club does its best to provide quality trips.

Nowhere in Navajo land is the blend of past tradition and present Culture more evident than at Canyon de Chelly National Monument . Greek Orthodox Monastery  Florence, AZ

Thursday, October 19, 2023 Daytrip $90 per person

A daytrip to somewhere you would never expect to find in Arizona—in Florence, Italy, maybe, but certainly not in Florence, Arizona! St. Anthony's Greek Orthodox Monastery sprang out of the Arizona desert, just south and a little east of Florence in the summer of 1995. That's when a former abbot of a monastery on Mount Athos, Greece sent six monks to Florence (yes, Arizona) to establish a new monastery in the name of Saint Anthony the Great, a Christian monk from Egypt credited with creating monastic life. The fathers began by building the main church, monastic living quarters, the dining hall, and some guest facilities. They also began a vegetable garden, a small vineyard, citrus orchards, and an olive grove amidst the desert landscape. Apparently, like the Field of Dreams, if you build it, they will come—they being Greek and Greek-American men seeking to adopt the monastic way of life. Buildings and well manicured grounds have been added during this monastery's short history. Women are welcome, if they dress modestly and cover ordinarily exposed skin with layers of cloth. (Appropriate clothing is provided if guests arrive without suitable attire.) Male visitors must observe similar modest dress with long pants and sleeves. Included in this trip:

  • Motor coach transportation from ARC, between locations, and return.
  • Monastery donation.
  • Introduction by resident, and self guided monastery tour.
  • Lunch at Florence's own Mt. Athos Restaurant ( Yelp reviewers give it 4.5 stars out of 5).
  • Wine tasting at the Windmill Winery.
  • Bus driver gratuity.

  • Celebrate the legacy of historic Route 66 on the way to Albuquerque, New Mexico. Then explore this cosmopolitan city and experience its blend of Native American, Hispanic and Anglo cultures on an Albuquerque City Tour .  Breaking Bad fans might be able to spot some of Mr. White's haunts! This will be the first overnight stop.
  • Travel north to Santa Fe, New Mexico's capital and one of this country's great art cities. In a walking tour tour of the Old Town Santa Fe , see mysterious staircase at the El Loretto Chapel , the Georgia O'Keefe Museum exhibiting works and history of the Mother of American modernism, and the renown El Santuario de Chimaya , a National Historic Landmark, famous for the story of its founding and as a contemporary pilgrimage site.
  • Motor to Taos, New Mexico , home to more than twenty sites on the National Register of Historic Places, mecca for artists like Georgia O'Keef and writers including D.H. Lawrence—and the site of Kit Carson's grave. Visit the Taos Pueblo whose multi-storied adobe buildings have been continuously inhabited for over 1,000 years.
  • Then on to Trinidad, Colorado for the night.
  • Ride the Royal Gorge Route Railroad soaring through the famous 1,000 foot deep canyon, whisked away by the 1950’s vintage locomotive inside train cars with oversized windows or outside in open air cars.
  • Spend two nights in Colorado Springs , a city driven by the military, high-tech industry, and tourism. Visit the beautiful Garden of the Gods park, the Air Force Academy , Manitou Springs and the Broadmoor Manitou .
  • Ride the unique Pike's Peak Cog Railway  which uses 1888 cog and rack technology to pull trains up grades reaching up to 25%.
  • On to Denver, Colorado , to jump on The California Zephyr ! It's Amtrak's scenic train which will travel from Cold Creek Canyon to Winter Park along the Colorado River, weaving in and out of Glenwood Canyon with views that are unmatched, and can't be accessed by bus or car.
  • Spend the night in Grand Junction, Colorado , with a hosted dinner. The next day brings a ride along the fabulous Million Dollar Highway which winds and clings to the mountain providing dramatic "million dollar" views at every turn. It is considered one of the best scenic drives in the U. S.
  • We arrive in Silverton , an old mining town with time for lunch on our own before we board the historic Durango-Silverton narrow gauge railroad train for another scenic adventure. Hear the train whistle announcing our arrival in the western town of Durango where we will spend the night. Both Silverton and Durango have unique western flavor history.
  • Next, a change of scenery today as we visit Mesa Verde National Park . This incredible place with multi-storied Native American Pueblos tells the story of inhabitants long gone. Our farewell dinner is the perfect opportunity to share photos and compare notes. We stay overnight in Cortez, Colorado , another historic town.
  • Returning home we savor our last day of travel, appreciating the local highlights, which include the 4 Corners Region of the U. S. where Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Arizona all come together.
  • This trip includes deluxe motorcoach transportation (when you're not on the trains) as well as a professional tour guide.

There's a New Luxury Hotel Coming to Phoenix — and It's Backed by Some of the Biggest Names in Sports and Entertainment

Twelve-time James Beard Award nominee Sam Fox teams up with country singer Dierks Bentley, basketball star Devin Booker, and former NFL player Larry Fitzgerald for an ambitious hotel project — and we talked to them all about it.

travel club phoenix

Sam Fox is a legend in the dining world, having opened more than 100 restaurants over the last 20 years, including Nashville's Twelve Thirty Club with Justin Timberlake last September. But now he's raising the bar on his ambitions, and recruiting an all-star team of the biggest names in sports and entertainment with ties to Arizona, to open Phoenix's The Global Ambassador hotel in 2023.

"The Global Ambassador is a personal, legacy project for me that furthers my pursuit of combining unmatched hospitality with culinary excellence," Fox, who is developing the project under his newly launched company Author & Edit Hospitality alongside real estate developer Brian Frakes' company Common Bond Development, told Travel + Leisure . "This isn't just a hotel — it's a luxury lifestyle brand that we hope will inspire and draw travelers from all over the world to explore Phoenix in a new way."

In order to to achieve that, he partnered up with Phoenix Suns basketball star Devin Booker, who he says has "a style and eye for design that's effortless," former Arizona Cardinals football star Larry Fitzgerald who he calls "one of the strongest ambassadors Arizona and Phoenix has to offer," and country star Dierks Bentley, who's been focused on the wellness offerings. "Dierks is fanatical about his health," Fox said. "His lifestyle has inspired the hotel to incorporate the world's best wellness offerings. I tease him constantly. Because of his commitment to the Wim Hof method, we included an incredible cold-plunge experience."

Though they're all investors, their contributions have come down to the tiniest of details for the 141-room property, which will sit at the convergence of Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Paradise Valley with Camelback Mountain as a backdrop.

"The attention to detail is obsessive, just like how I approach the game," Booker told T+L. "The design is thoughtful, and the experiences will be exceptional. My career in sports has afforded me experience — traveling internationally both professionally and personally — so I'm exposed to all of the small details that impact the guest experience."

Designed around a plaza courtyard, the hotel will also have a wellness center with both a fitness center and luxe spa, staffed by experts in health, fitness, and beauty to customize the guest experience. A members-only club will provide elevated experiences with limited access. And of course, The Global Ambassador will feature Fox's specialty: five new restaurants.

The European Market & Café will provide a casual eatery modeled after a Parisian cafe with coffee and pastries in the morning and wine, cheese, and tapas in the afternoon. Connected to the cafe will be the hotel's signature restaurant, Parisian Steakhouse. The Poolside Restaurant mixes Mexican and Peruvian fare, while the Members' Restaurant serves American classics in a supper-club style.

The most anticipated, however, is the 18,000-square-foot Rooftop Restaurant with a Mediterranean focus, serving Greek, Italian, Spanish, and Moroccan dishes. "Personally, I think the rooftop restaurant overlooking Camelback Mountain will be truly unique, and I'm excited to experience a sunset from that rooftop patio," Fitzgerald told T+L. "That view really captures the essence and beauty of Phoenix."

Booker echoes that sentiment. "It's so amazing to see how these elements come together to create a memorable experience," he said. "With a luxury hotel, you're curating how someone engages, acts, and feels inside a space. Entertaining brings people together, especially when it's with a great meal and some incredible wine. With five restaurants inside, each with their own unique aesthetic and menu, this hotel is going to be a place where I look forward to hosting friends and family."

And so much of the allure of The Global Ambassador is in its location. "For me, coming back home to Arizona is all about being outdoors — taking in the natural beauty of the most beautiful state in the country," Bentley said, noting he started hiking Camelback Mountain when he was just 4 years old. "I love the way The Global Ambassador has incorporated Camelback into its design — the view of the mountain from the top deck is going to be incredible. And if the view isn't enough, it's a short walk to the Echo Canyon trail if you want to hike to the top of it."

Above all, the property is about bringing people together. "Much of the hotel has been concepted during the pandemic, so we really wanted to lean into getting back to being social," Fox said. "People are craving human interaction and we didn't want to create too many private areas that put up barriers and restricted gathering. This hotel is open and all encompassing. One space plays off the next. We want people to reconnect and celebrate being together. Welcoming people into our neighborhood is the premise and foundation of The Global Ambassador."

Thank you for visiting the Silver Phoenix Travel Club Website.

Who are we? Discussions about setting up the travel club commenced in the middle of 2017 following the announcement that another similar organisation would cease to exist at the end of the year.  A group of 4 enthusiastic people decided that a new club should be formed and that it would offer its services and programme via e-mail and the internet but without excluding those who did not have access to modern technology.

Where are we based? Our days out and tours all start in Canterbury, Kent.  For most British excursions and tours we also stop at Medway Services.  However, if we are crossing the Channel by ferry to the Continent, we are able to pick up at Dover Ferry Port but not from Medway Services.

What do we offer? For an annual e-mail subscription of £10.00 per person (£20.00 per person for non-e-mail members) membership will offer regular mail-outs by way of a Newsletter and the chance to participate in a wide variety of coach days out and short breaks – all of which are advertised here on our website.

Can non-members apply for excursions? Naturally we give priority to members when allocating places but subject to availability non-members are always welcome to travel with us.  However, by becoming a member you will pay less for most of our advertised tours etc.

How do I join? We invite you to explore our website or by  clicking here  as this will take you straight to our membership form.  Once a member you will be able to apply for any of our advertised excursions at the reduced members’ price and bring one other person with you at the reduced price offered.

Don’t delay – join today and please pay frequent visits to our website as new excursions and tours will be added throughout the year.

We look forward to welcoming you as a member.
