Why You Should Attend a Travel Expo

by Stephanie · Published February 25, 2019 · Updated February 24, 2019

Have you ever attended a travel expo? If you have you know how great they can be. And if you haven’t been to a travel and tourism show then you’re missing out! There are a ton of benefits to going to one of these shows. After attending The Outdoor Adventure Show this past weekend I was blown away and knew I had to convince others to not only attend this show but a travel show near you. So, I’ve compiled 5 reasons why YOU should attend a travel expo.

Travel Expo - The Outdoor Adventure Show

What is a Travel Expo?

A travel expo is similar to a trade show but open to the public. They’re usually held in large event centres and showcase an array of travel exhibitors. You’ll find everything from tourism boards, travel gear, tour companies, and other travel related brands. And there is always a variety of things going on, like The Outdoor Adventure Show has a rock climbing wall, demonstrations, presentations, products to try, and more.

Attend a Travel Expo Near You

There are countless travel expos around the world. So, it should be easy to find one near you. The largest outdoor adventure and travel show in Canada is The Outdoor Adventure Show. It’s held in numerous big cities across Canada every year. And is home to over 300 exhibits that offer everything from the latest outdoor gear to amazing adventure travel destinations. And to help inspire your next adventure there are over 100 presentations that cover everything from paddling to international travel.

A few other big travel shows around the world include; the New York Times Travel Show , the Vancouver International Travel Expo, and the World Travel Expo in Australia.

5 Reasons Why YOU Should Attend a Travel Expo

Newfoundland

Start Planning Your Next Adventure

The number one reasons to attend a travel expo is because it’s the BEST place to help you start planning your next adventure. Like at The Outdoor Adventure & Travel Show this year there was a huge focus on Newfoundland & Labrador travel. And there were exhibits on everything from what to do in St. John’s to how best to explore Gros Morne National Park, and a ton more that Newfoundland & Labrador has to offer. And this is key, speaking with the folks at the booths will not only inspire you to visit their destinations or join their tours, but they have the BEST information to help you plan the perfect adventure.

Talk to Professionals

Another great reason to attend a travel expo is that you can speak directly with the people behind the scenes. These are not travel agents spewing what you want to hear. These professionals know their stuff and will give you the best advice on when to visit a destination, what are some of the best tours and ways to explore – many you probably haven’t heard of, and they can give you all the information, pamphlets, and websites to ensure you have the best adventure.

Like at the Outdoor Adventure Show this year I got to speak with not only someone from the Nunavut tourism board but also ladies from Parks Canada who not only live there but travel and work in Nunavut. As well as tour operators that are from Nunavut. All of this lead to incredible conversations about the truth behind Nunavut, what to do there, how to get around, and real local advice.

Discover New Destinations & Tour Companies

Sometimes browsing the web in search of a tour company or a new place to visit can be overwhelming. But at a travel expo you’ll discover a ton of great places to visit that might not have been on your radar. And talking with the representatives of that destination they can help you find where to go and what to do that is geared towards your interests.

And there are always a wide array of tour companies, many large and well known and some small but just as great. You’ll find everything from dive tours to group tours to off the beaten path destinations, and even tour companies that can customize a tour for you. And speaking to the folks from each will help you find the best fit for you.

Like at the Outdoor Adventure Show I learned about a woman from Uganda that created a tour company for woman travellers, Women Tour Uganda . An adventure cruise company, One Ocean Expeditions , which will help you explore the Canadian Arctic. And I even discovered a non-profit organization, Paddle Co-op , which offers affordable whitewater kayaking and canoe trips in Ontario, and the money helps support youth leadership programs.

Get Great Deals

If you love deals than you should definitely attend a travel expo! Whether you’re looking for new camping gear, a new backpack, or great clothing, a travel expo is full of awesome deals on all the gear you need. Many things are greatly reduced or even half off.

And not only is there deals on outdoor and travel gear, but also on tours. I noticed most of the tour companies at The Outdoor Adventure Show were offering deals off tours for attendees or if you signed up for their newsletter. Some were hundreds of dollars off and one I noticed was a two for one deal!

Contest to win an adventure

Enter ALL the Contests

When you attend a travel expo you’ll be blown away by all the contests there are. Be sure to enter ALL the contests you can. You never know when you might win. And someone has to win – and it could totally be YOU!

At The Outdoor Adventure Show there were a ton of contests. There were contests on everything from winning free gear to winning a $10,000 adventure vacation with Exodus Travels, and even a 7-Day RV rental.

So, be sure to attend a travel expo near you. And whether you live in Canada or are visiting, make sure to visit The Outdoor Adventure & Travel Show the next time it arrives in a city near you !

What Is A Travel Expo?

A travel expo is a convention that brings together potential travelers with industry experts like travel agents and resort representatives. The general purpose of a travel expo is to educate the consumer on trends, deals and other pertinent travel information, but these events are also great places to meet people who are interested in travel.

Some expos will feature presentations or activities, others will have booths set up and some combine formats. Travel companies attend these events for exposure to new clients and to keep up on the latest industry news, and they often feature "show-only deals." These deals are special rates available to those at the expo. While attending an expo, people have the option to book trips on the spot or they can take information and book trips at a later date. There are people who book trips exclusively through expos for the personal experience and on-the-spot deals.

In addition to meeting with people in the industry, those who attend travel expos usually have the opportunity to win prizes or free trips. The events going on during the expo can be interesting, as well. At the Washington DC Travel & Adventure Show in 2014 attendees had the opportunity to take scuba diving lessons in a pool, scale a rock climbing wall or test out a segway. During that same expo, guests were also able to see exotic cooking demos and cultural performances.

What is MICE? (Meetings, incentives, conferences & exhibitions)

travel exhibition meaning

August 20, 2020 •

Putting the nice into MICE

Nothing to do with pest control, everything to do with business-minded travel. Put simply, MICE stands for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences & Exhibitions. It is business tourism at its finest, aimed at bringing together top professionals from every sector in an enhanced, tailor-made hospitality setting.

What is MICE?

Meetings are typically held in hotel conference rooms or at convention centers. They are single-day events that bring together a group of professionals to address a key challenge or set goals for the organization.

Incentives are travel rewards a company may provide in return for excellent professional performance from individual employees, groups or partners. A few days in a resort, hotel or popular hospitality venue at your company’s expense does wonders for employee loyalty.

Conferences

Conferences take meetings to the next level and are designed for a large corporate group to share knowledge across several days. They often include not only key members of the organization, but also guest speakers and the general public.

Exhibitions

Exhibitions are essentially trade shows where an organization promotes its key products and services to the public. They are hyper-focused events that drum up business and help employees to network and build lasting professional relationships.

MICE services: Revenue implications

Implementing tailor-made MICE services into a hotel infrastructure is a way of securing additional long-term valuable growth. The latest Convention Industry Council report claimed that 85% of meetings in the U.S. are conducted at venues with lodging, generating more than 275 million room nights annually. The expenditure of MICE travelers is much higher than leisure travelers, with profitable customers coming from the world of IT, banking, pharmaceuticals, retail and hospitality.

In brief, hotel meetings and corporate events are great way to boost revenue and secure those extra bookings. Lastly, developing MICE services is the perfect opportunity to enhance a hotel’s reputation and profile, besides its profitability.

MICE: Required skills

The expertise required to excel in MICE tourist management is based on interpersonal, creative, organizational and technical skills. Innovative creativity is needed to design original event concepts, select the right venues and market effectively. The strong practical component must include technical know-how ranging from audio-visual dexterity to accessing fast-track visa apps. Soft skills such as patience, empathy, teamwork and problem-solving are vital if, for example, a large traveling party from a culturally-specific region are to be greeted with the appropriate welcome drink.

This niche hospitality market has seen hotels having to create jobs for innovative meeting planners and professional conference services staff, as well as develop industry-specific programs to add new dimensions to their overall service infrastructure. In some cases, recruiting in-house can prove difficult if all competencies are to be met, hence the rise in Destination Management Companies (DMC) that have started to spring up worldwide.

A DMC aims to offer the full range logistic services in their specialist destinations: meet & greet, transfers & transportation, hotel accommodation, restaurants, activities, excursions, conference venues, themed events and gala dinners. They are often able to provide preferential rates based on the buying power that they have with their preferred suppliers.

MICE: Global events

A number of global events focus on MICE travel, especially the incentive niche, many of which are organized by Questex Travel Group (formerly MEET). Of the annual events, these are some of the most prominent in the industry around the world:

  • Global Meeting & Incentive Travel Exchange (GMITE): Formerly known as Incentive Travel Exchange (ITE).
  • Latin America Meeting & Incentive Travel Exchange (LAMITE): Working to connect business opportunities in Latin America.
  • Caribbean Meeting & Incentive Travel Exchange (CMITE): The island version of the ITE.

The world of cultural institutions and experiences has been disrupted by the multi-level crisis that has stormed the world this year. Travelling exhibitions, as a resource used by cultural organisations to engage with audiences, have been particularly impacted. Beyond the political, social and health effects of the crisis on daily lives, producing and hosting teams have had to deal with closures, postponements, cancellations and transformations all around the world.

The multiple domino effects that have swept the industry in this context, notably through reprogramming, have brought to light in a new way the very unique nature of our community. Its limits and fragility. But also, its strong international networks, its interdependencies at all scales: local, regional and global. A precious sense of dialogue and solidarity. Multiform creativity and unique dynamism. A world of very involved stakeholders, which is continuously reinventing itself.

Travelling exhibitions [...] will be key resources for resilience and recovery in the cultural world and beyond.

Why Touring Exhibitions Matter is a series of articles by Teo that aims to highlight the value of travelling exhibitions by questioning how these creative resources and the collaborations they foster are established sources of value for cultural institutions and why they will be key resources for resilience and recovery in the cultural world and beyond.

The benefits of travel expos on tourism [Travel]

travel exhibition meaning

For some, travel is an expensive luxury good, while for others it is an escape from their everyday lives. From acquiring souvenirs to gaining mutual understanding, travel brings the world closer with every heart-to-heart communication acting as a form of cultural exchange.

At the recently concluded ITB Berlin 2018, the results of the five-day exhibition on the Berlin Exhibition Grounds mirrored the good atmosphere. The show, which had been booked to near capacity for months, impressively confirmed its role as a reliable economic indicator and forward-looking trendsetter.

Meanwhile, Africa’s Travel Indaba is around the corner. Travel Indaba is one of the largest tourism marketing events on the African calendar and one of the top three ‘must visit’ events of its kind on the global calendar.

What is event tourism and why is it important?

Event tourism is big business- read on to find out what event tourism is and why it is so important.

What is event tourism?

Types of events, benefits of events tourism, limitations of event tourism, sporting event tourism, music event tourism, entertainment event tourism, business event tourism, the hotel industry, the transport industry, the hospitality industry, the advertising industry, event tourism- further reading.

Event tourism is essentially any tourism that relates to events. Events come in all shapes and sizes- they can be large scale events or small events, private events or public events.

Event tourism can bring a lot of money into the host community, making it a valuable contributor to the tourism economy.

Traditionally, events have always been viewed as being part of the tourism industry, however that has been slowly changing in recent years, with many people recognising the event industry as an industry in its own right. In fact, it has become so separated that many universities now offer event management degrees that are totally separate from travel and tourism !

event tourism. types of events

There are different types of events that happen around the world and these often fall under different types of tourism . I have written a detailed article on the major types of events , but for now, here is a brief breakdown-

  • Business events
  • Sporting events
  • Recreation events
  • Local interest events
  • Entertainment
  • Celebrations
  • Social enterprise events
  • Conferences
  • Promotional events
  • Exhibitions

Event tourism is hugely beneficial to the tourism industry because it bring in money!

Events attract people and people spend money- people need a place to stay and somewhere to eat. Events also create jobs- someone needs to build the venues, there needs to be security working on the door and a customer service agent selling tickets. The events industry contributes to many of the jobs in travel and tourism .

Events can also help to put destinations on the world map. You may never have heard of a place before but if they host a big event, especially if it is a global event like the Football World Cup or the Olympics, then people all over the world will learn about the destination! This can often have long lasting effects and can even be a catalyst for the start of a booming travel and tourism industry.

With large amounts of visitors to a destination, however, there are bound to be some negative impacts too. Events can bring many unwanted social impacts of tourism and environmental impacts of tourism . It can also encourage economic leakage in tourism . There are sadly many negative impacts of event tourism as: the increased cost of living, traffic congestion, crowding, crime, property damage, pollution, deterioration of natural, cultural or historical resources and other various forms of discomfort experienced by residents or local businesses.

There are many specific examples of where event tourism has led to negative issues. For example, during the construction of the Olympic village for each 4-yearly Games, there have been many recorded fatalities. 14 people died building the Olympic village for the 2004 games in Athens – and seventy people lost their lives during the construction of the Olympic village for the Russian Winter Olympics. The huge levels of tourism associated with the Games mean that a lot of work goes into ensuring the stadiums, accommodation and fan zones are built to a high standard. However, this doesn’t always correspond with worker safety.

Another example is living in Wimbledon during the tennis championships. Everything about life is made a little bit more difficult due to the heavier-than-normal traffic, the long queues everywhere you go, an inability to book restaurants or access public transport and so on. This overcrowding is typical of event tourism, and it is one of the downsides for people living in areas affected by large events.

Types of Events

Examples of event tourism

There are so many examples of event tourism which we can look at. You can read about some of them below…

With sports, many people support teams or clubs based in or near their hometown – so for league games, sport is unlikely to generate a LOT of tourism , though there will be some. But for cups and championships, as well as large competitions or sports where the same people or teams compete in different places, there will be a lot of tourism generated from fans who are required to travel to watch it live.

Little to no event tourism:

  • League and cup matches at home grounds

Large amounts of tourism:

  • Cup finals at neutral venues
  • International sporting competitions e.g The Olympic and Commonwealth Games
  • International championships e.g Wimbledon or the US Open (Golf)
  • Sports where the venue changes e.g Formula 1

When it comes to music events, there are also different levels of tourism.

Little to no tourism:

  • Tours where the artist is playing in so many cities that generally people won’t need to travel far to see them
  • Short tours with only a few locations
  • Music festivals e.g Reading and Leeds Festival

Other entertainment events such as Comic Con and other conventions, food shows, flower shows and so on tend to be in one set location each time. This means they generate a lot of tourism as most people will need to travel if they want to attend.

Similarly to entertainment events, business events tend to be in one place. A conference will take place in a specific venue in a specific city, for example, and attendees will need to travel to get there. This obviously generates event tourism as people use transport and book places to stay.

Impacts of event tourism on different industries

Types of Events

The rolling impact of an event touches every part of the tourism industry, which you can read about below through specific examples.

Accommodation is highly in demand for any event. It is usually not just locals who attend an event – unless it is something small-scale like a village fair, which does not generate event tourism per se. But for football games, music festivals and so on, hotels and Airbnbs in the surrounding area get booked up super quickly.

The example I will use here is the Champions League Final in Kyiv in 2018; hotels were like gold dust even before it was decided which two teams would be battling it out for the title. Prices were hiked, and people who had booked before the location of the final was actually confirmed (e.g people who were visiting Kyiv for other reasons) saw their booking cancelled to make way for football fans travelling from Liverpool and Madrid. This was obviously beneficial for hotel owners. It was also beneficial for locals in Kyiv, however, who were able to open up their homes as temporary accommodation for travelling fans.

Transport is affected in that when an event is taking place, there are a lot more people travelling to and within the area via public transport.

If we take the specific example of Oktoberfest in Germany, an annual beer festival, we can see that flight prices to these areas are more expensive in the lead up to it. On top of this, trains within the area are getting booked up already – and smaller local public transport which can’t be booked in advance will see a busier-than-normal time.

It stands to reason that when an event is taking place, people will use public transport especially if there is little or no parking at the venue. Events create congestion, which is one of the negatives discussed earlier in this post. But Oktoberfest also creates a lot of revenue for hotels, bars, restaurants and shops!

Working in hospitality is often a thankless job – and during large events it can be even more difficult as bars, cafes and restaurants fill up with visitors.

Using the specific example of the London Olympics in 2012, there were streams of visitors to the city who each spent an average of around £1300 during the Olympic period. Restaurants, cafes and food outlets were full of tourists ; many wanted quick service, and there were of course foreign languages for the staff to contend with.

All in all, jobs seemed harder during this period but there was not actually an increase in revenue. This article explains how and why the restaurant, hotel and pub industry saw a £55 million loss in revenue during the London Olympics… The Games were, however, a big deal for tourism generally. The ONS stated that visitor numbers were up by 2.63m and visitor spending reached a whopping £1.9 billion. This has had a lasting impact over the past decade with visitor numbers remaining high.

Of course, event tourism brings with it a lot of marketing. When there is an event, it needs to be advertised.

Let’s take, for example, the annual music festival Coachella. This is big business, with visitors coming from worldwide to enjoy seeing their favourite artists in sunny California . Like any festival, however, it needs to be advertised. A lot of their marketing is digital – primarily across Instagram and Twitter. However, this still costs money and people are employed to do this across different levels: from the people who write the Tweets to the staff at Twitter itself. Other marketing like posters, billboards and so on have costs involved too. Whether it’s a page in a magazine or a slogan on the side of a bus, event tourism undoubtedly has a massive impact on the marketing industry.
