How to go from Kampot to Phnom Penh

After a fabulous few days in Kampot, we were heading off again, this time heading to the far north, to Sen Monorom, but to get there we had to go via Phnom Penh and we had several options for this route. Our route took into consideration that we were going straight out of Phnom Penh, and we had to look at all the options to see which was best.  So here are the different ways to go from Kampot to Phnom Penh, how long they take, how much they cost, and what your choices are.  Here’s our guide on how to get to Phnom Penh from Kampot.

THIS POST MAY CONTAIN COMPENSATED AND AFFILIATE LINKS MORE INFORMATION IN  OUR DISCLAIMER

Phnom Penh is enormous, so much bigger than when we were first here in 2014.  And any form of transport into or out of it will tell you that the time taken “depends on the traffic jams”.  Although that doesn’t apply when it comes to using the train, it does for the road transport options.   Considerations that you need to look at also include where the bus company offices are in relation to where you want to be in Phnom Penh.  In Cambodia, there isn’t the concept of a centralized bus station.  Each of the different bus and minivan companies has their own offices, which are not usually near each other.  So there’s another point.  If you’re taking a van into Phnom Penh to take another one out (like we were), then you should try and go with the same company for both legs of the journey, otherwise, you’ll be trying to get through Phnom Penh’s traffic to get to a different bus company office.

Right.  Let’s get on, shall we?

Phnom Penh to Kampot

Best options, other options, phnom penh to kampot schedule, how to get from phnom penh to kampot.

The main draw of Kampot is undoubtedly its laidback and relaxed atmosphere of a small riverside town and, of course, pepper. Pepper from Kampot is a well-known brand in South East Asia, and well, you cannot leave Kampot without buying some pepper for yourself, for your friends, for your mom – and then buying some more – just in case. Life is slow in Kampot, though in recent years more and more international cuisine restaurants and bars are making their way to the town, and the local expat community grows step by step. In general, Kampot is a perfect place to spend a couple of relaxed days savouring a slightly nostalgic air of this quaint town filled with once stately colonial mansions on the background of the green slopes of surrounding hills.

You can easily cover Kampot on foot: the town is small and flat. Nearly every guesthouse offers bicycles and motorbikes for hire; prices start from USD1.5 and USD5 per day respectively. Traffic is limited and riding a bicycle or a motorbike is a pleasure in Kampot. With your two-wheel transport you will have much more freedom and will not be dependent on tour agencies for visiting outlying caves, the Secret Lake, salt fields and pepper farms. Bokor National Park can also be reached by motorbike, and the road up the mountain is in good condition.

Where to stay

For a town of such a small size Kampot has a wonderfully good choice of accommodation – from basic budget digs to rather stylish upmarket bungalows and hotel rooms. Prices are a delight for your pocket, whichever type of accommodation you fancy. To get the most of your stay in Kampot it is highly recommended to opt for one of the guesthouses along the river. Many of them have terraces over the water and access to the river.

Apart from visiting Bokor National Park with its dilapidated casino and some other colonial buildings, a couple of waterfalls and breath taking views over Kampot, there are enough things to see and to do in Kampot and around to spend several lazy days.

Nearly every pepper farm around Kampot is happy to welcome visitors, so you can witness the process of pepper growing and processing from A to Z and buy some great – and genuine – Kampot pepper directly from farms.

Another important industry in Kampot is salt producing. Picturesque white cones dot glittering salt fields which reflect the sky along the road to Kep.

There several worth-seeing ancient temples and ruins around Kampot with Phnom Chhnork being one of the most impressive sights as well as a dozen of relatively modern Buddhist wats in town, some with surprisingly nice murals.

Oh, and definitely take a boat trip along the river – without it your Kampot experience will not be complete!

About the ride from Phnom Penh to Kampot

There is much to do in Cambodia’s vibrant capital, Phnom Penh: Royal temples, busy markets, and museums are just some of the attractions the city is known for. But if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the town and discover the beautiful Cambodian countryside, there is no better place to go than Kampot .

The 136 km (85 miles) distance from Phnom Penh to Kampot takes three to four hours to cover. You have multiple choices regarding how to travel this distance: Bus, minivan, or private car transfer.  With multiple departure times throughout the day, it is easy to travel to Kampot. Buses and minivans are a convenient and economical option, while private taxis offer flexibility in terms of timing.

What to see when traveling from Phnom Penh to Kampot?

A city infamous for its chaotic traffic, expect to run into traffic jams when you start your journey from Phnom Penh. But the good news is that it won’t be long before you leave this behind and come across relaxing countryside scenes. As you head further away from Phnom Penh, you will witness the calming green of rice fields and swaying coconut and palm trees. While the short journey is the perfect time to take a nap, it is also an excellent opportunity to witness life outside the city. Sit back and relax to the sight of locals heading out to their farms and going about their chores. Wave out to the children who are only happy to smile and wave back. Sublime views of the Bokor Mountains will welcome you once you get closer to Kampot. If you are traveling by private minivan or taxi, do stop at one of the many local fruit stalls for a bite of watermelon or local fruit. It’s the perfect way to interact and get to know the friendly locals. The months immediately following the monsoons (November and December) are a great time to visit Kampot as the whole region is decked in shades of green. However, do note that road conditions tend to deteriorate during and immediately after the rainy season, so your journey may take a little longer than expected.

How to get from Phnom Penh to Kampot?

Taking a bus If you are looking for a cost-effective way to get to Kampot, then taking the bus is an excellent option. With a travel time of just a little over 3 hours, comfortable seats, air conditioning, and economical pricing, buses provide great value-for-money. They even offer a light snack and bottled water. The coaches provide multiple pick up and drop off points making it very convenient to board at Phnom Penh and to get to your accommodation at Kampot. Free hotel pick up is also available.

Taking a minivan  With per passenger ticket prices ranging from $8 to $11, a minivan is the most economical option when you are traveling to Kampot from Phnom Penh. It is perfect for backpackers who travel light and are budget conscious. Equipped with air conditioning and comfortable seats, they are an excellent value-for-money option. If you are going as part of a larger group, you also have the option of hiring a minivan that can accommodate 6 to 10 people.

Taking a car If you are looking for ease of travel and privacy, you should book a private car. Perfect for groups of up to 3, a private car gives you the convenience of extra space for yourself and your luggage. You can choose between a standard vehicle and a more spacious SUV. Travel times are similar to that of a minivan (they take anywhere between 3.5 and 4 hrs), and they are certainly the most convenient, with hotel pick up and drop off options.

Hello David R,

Fully agree with Expedition 773717.

Ian/Angkorlad

I am not sure how flying into and out of the same airport makes much difference. Perhaps I had too much beer last night.

What I might do is reorder and go to PP from Battambang and then the southern bit returning to PP for a night before leaving

My wife and have recently undertaken a very similar itinerary.

Worked very well for us.

Phnom Penh Has One of the Most Brilliant Drinking Havens in Asia. Really

We flew to cambodia just for a drink (or 10) at sora, the highest bar in the country, atop rosewood phnom penh. verdict: the luxury locavore experience was worth it, and the rest of the hotel’s not too shabby either..

Phnom Penh Has One of the Most Brilliant Drinking Havens in Asia. Really

SOARING ABOVE THE PHNOM PENH skyline, through the haze, lights and sounds, Sora (which means “sky” in Japanese) stands as an impressive beacon of cocktail excellence. The bar introduces the “Book of Yokai,” a vividly illustrated menu that begins our journey with a tribute to Cambodia’s high-quality spirits and flavors. These 12 cocktails are artfully divided into four chapters, with each chapter offering three drinks—including a non-alcoholic option—that showcase the complexities of a quintessentially Cambodian ingredient. Adding to the allure, The Whisky Library debuts six new whisky cocktails, each paying homage to the historical aspects of Japanese Samurai warriors. With new bar manager KT Lam at the helm, Sora is positioning itself as “the place” for creative, sustainable, and uniquely Cambodian cocktails in the city, if not the entire country.

Rosewood Phnom Penh has truly landed a rising star in KT Lam. Coming off some great years, he rose through the ranks at Darkside, one of the world’s top ranked bars, situated in the iconic vertical estate of Rosewood Hong Kong. His experience in the highly competitive cocktail industry positions him perfectly to continue his trajectory and bring his expertise to Sora and its team. The bar star has a thoughtful and holistic approach to creating cocktails, focusing on details for the new program. From handcrafted specialty glassware by local artisans to a sustainable approach using eco-spirits and award-winning local spirits distilled right in Sora’s backyard, KT Lam is raising the bar—quite literally—to new heights.

Sora Bar Team

Sora itself spans three distinct spaces, each offering its own unique ambiance. The impressive outdoor terrace offers panoramic sunset views—if you don’t believe me, check them out on IG and witness the influencers in the wild for yourself. Essential to Rosewood’s exquisite design, the lounge area, complete with a full bar, sets the scene for live music, offering a classic chic setting with glowing candles and reflections of the night. My personal favorite space, however, is The Whiskey Library—a connoisseur’s haven with a world-class selection of international whiskeys and fine cigars, offers an intimate retreat. However, you shouldn’t be fooled by the name; this space offers incredible, uninterrupted views of the skyline, overlooking the bar and its impeccably dressed barkeeps.

Rosewood’s amenities complement the Sora experience seamlessly. On my visit, I took city and distillery tours, featuring the tasty locally produced rum, Samai, and the World’s Best Gin 2023, Mawsim, deepening our connection to Cambodian flavors and craftsmanship. The hotel boasts four restaurants: Cut, an American steakhouse; Brasserie Louis, where French meets Cambodian charm; Iza, a Japanese izakaya with authenticity and innovation; and Zhan Liang, presents an elevated dining experience offering a taste of northern Chinese, Cantonese and sichuan. Each dining establishment promises a unique journey for the palate.

Rosewood Phnom Penh is not merely a hotel but a destination itself, a one-of-its kind in Phnom Penh. I was wowed by the setting the stage for an experience that sets a new standard. It’s evident that this is a place where every detail contributes to the creation of memories.
