7 of the Most Scenic Bike Routes in San Diego

By Cole Novak

Mission Bay Loop Scenic Bike Routes San Diego

I didn’t ride a bike without training wheels until I was 10 years old. I was intimidated by steep hills, sharing the road with cars, and any sort of cardio exercise. But then something changed: I received my very own bike. It wasn’t just any bike—it was my dad’s cherry-red 1993 Specialized RockHopper , a bike that had three more years of life experience than I did. Once a rusting relic in my father’s garage, it became my way to freely explore San Diego, the city I’ve called home my whole life .

Subscribe and get 1 year for $18

Since then, I have spent countless hours tracing the following trails, loops, and bike paths with friends and family. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced cyclist, these treks offer something for everyone (including some truly stunning views). With summer traffic in full swing, it’s time to trade in four wheels for two and embark on these scenic routes around San Diego.

Bayshore Bikeway

The Bayshore Bikeway is a great spot for bikers of all skill levels who want to enjoy a beautiful waterside view of downtown San Diego. The path is generally flat and provides a wide, dedicated lane for bikers, pedestrians, and skaters to share. Casual riders can start their cruise at the Coronado Ferry Landing and circle back at the Coronado Yacht Club.

More serious bikers can follow the path beneath the Coronado Bridge and along the Silver Strand Highway 75, then turn onto Palm Avenue for the final stretch to the Imperial Beach Pier. Some folks even take the Coronado Ferry to the Coastal Rail Trail (see below) for a full-day biking adventure. Stop by the Coronado Coffee Company stand just off the Coronado Ferry Landing Pier, a popular spot for cyclists to fuel up on caffeine before a long jaunt down the Silver Strand.

Coastal Rail Trail – Encinitas to Oceanside

This flat and scenic North County trail is a gorgeous, laidback stretch between Encinitas and Oceanside. Park near Swami’s Beach and pedal north along Highway 101 adjacent to the Coaster tracks into Carlsbad. If you need a pit stop, drop by Carlsbad Village for a bite to eat at Board and Brew or take the stairs down to the beach, then continue the ride into Oceanside.

For expert cyclists, the full Coastal Rail Trail (with dedicated bike lanes in development) runs a total of 44 miles from Oceanside to the Santa Fe Depot downtown, a whopping 3 hour and 20 minute ride through the entire county.

Mission Bay Loop Scenic Bike Routes San Diego

Mission Bay Bike Loop

Enjoy a beginner-friendly 11.3-mile loop around Mission Bay , featuring flat cement paths, waterways, bridges, and a view of Fiesta Island. This is a popular spot for tourists in summer, so expect to share the path with skaters and cyclists trying to beat their time trials.

Out-of-town visitors can rent bikes from a myriad of nearby shops, including Ray’s Rentals along Mission Boulevard. You might even run into legendary rollerblader SloMo while you’re at it. End your ride with a picnic along the bay or a stop in Belmont Park for a revitalizing drink, or continue your cruise up the boardwalk to Pacific Beach.

Lake Poway Loop Trail Scenic Bike Routes San Diego

Lake Poway Loop Trail Scenic Bike Routes San Diego

Lake Poway Loop Trail

For a less-crowded ride, head to Lake Poway in East County. The dirt path follows the lake’s perimeter, with a moderate 579-foot climb along the hillside. Just under three miles, the East County jaunt offers natural eye candy without throngs of tourists. Avoid the Blue Sky Reserve trail on the dam side of the lake and, if you don’t have a Poway address, bring $10 for non-resident parking in the lot on weekends.

Those up for a bigger challenge can split off at the Mount Woodson trailhead for a 5.4-mile loop with inclines and views of the iconic Potato Chip Rock . Be sure to bring extra sunscreen and water, as the heat can be intense in the summer months.

Cabrillo National Monument Scenic Bike Routes San Diego

Cabrillo National Monument Scenic Bike Routes San Diego

Courtesy of Strava

Ocean Beach Pier to Cabrillo National Monument

Take in lovely sights of Sunset Cliffs, Point Loma, and the city skyline on this eight-mile route along the coast (but note that the path does contain hills and requires cyclists to share the road with drivers). Start at the Ocean Beach Pier and take Sunset Cliffs Boulevard to Catalina Boulevard for a smooth incline up the hills, passing World War II bunkers, military barracks, and the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. Pay the $10 entrance fee at Cabrillo National Park to continue the ride down the gorgeous coastal road, past critter-filled tide pools.

The descent down Cabrillo Road can provide amazing views of the ocean, but the 350-foot, .75-mile ride back up the hill can be an absolute leg-burner, so prepare accordingly and get all your gear (including cold water!) in order.

Balboa Park Scenic Bike Routes San Diego

Balboa Park Scenic Bike Routes San Diego

Balboa Park Loop

Explore Balboa Park on two wheels with this loop that crosses the Prado Bridge and breezes by museums, gardens, and the park’s traditional Spanish architecture. Biking through the 155-year-old green space can help you access spots often overlooked while driving in a car.

After navigating through the park and passing the Fleet Science Center, cyclists can take Park Boulevard up to University Avenue for a ride through Hillcrest to enjoy a tasty bite at favorite spots like Ike’s Sandwiches . If you’re up for it, extend your cruise from Hillcrest into North Park for more city adventuring.

Mt. Laguna Scenic Bike Routes San Diego

Big Laguna Trail

Venture into the beautiful Mount Laguna meadows and find a bike loop ideal for weekend wanderers kicking off a camping trip. Located just under an hour east of downtown via the Sunrise Highway, the Big Laguna trail offers routes for beginners and advanced cyclists alike. Although mountain bikes are best for the area, road bikes can still manage the meadow loop for a less-strenuous family ride.

Mountain bikers can start their cruise at the Sunset Trailhead, pass through the Mount Laguna Meadow campground, and check out the Cleveland National Forest’s perimeter along the trail. Five dollars gets you access to the meadow’s scenery, vibrant wildflowers, diverse wildlife population, and fresh mountain air. Don’t forget to bring water, sunscreen, bug repellent, and your binoculars for bird-watching.

Kid-Friendly Bike Rides Around San Diego

Perfect paths for kids of all ages.

Warm weather coupled with beautiful scenery makes San Diego the perfect place for family bike rides.

Plan Your Two Wheel Adventure

Beautiful beach paths, meandering lake trails and all-around gorgeous scenery make San Diego ideal for hoping on a bike and exploring near or far. With so many bike rental shops spread across the county, it's easy to pick up a few beach cruisers for the day and take in the sights. Many sections of San Diego have bike lanes, so depending on your child's age, the options can be limitless. Here are some of the best spots for family bike rides.

Carlsbad Coastal Rail Trail

Starting in North County, the Carlsbad Coastal Rail Trail runs along the train tracks, making it a whole lot of fun for the kids to see the trains up close! The path is wide and tucked away from the traffic, making it ideal for smaller children and stress-free for the bigger ones, too. Stretching only .7 miles, it’s ideal for smaller peddlers. Park on Tamarack Avenue or in Carlsbad Village and enjoy the ride!

Solana Beach Coastal Rail Trail

Similar to the Carlsbad trail, the Solana Beach option runs parallel to the train tracks. Starting at Via De La Valle where it meets the Coast Highway, the trail heads north and finishes at Ocean Street, for an approximately 1.7 mile stretch. Beach access can be found about halfway on Plaza Drive so riders can jump in the ocean and cool off. Safe and off the main roads, it's another coastal gem that's near plenty of fun food stops to fuel up.

La Jolla Bike Tour

A must-stop when in town, La Jolla is referred to as the "crown jewel" of San Diego for a reason. Stop in at any one of the local bike rental shops and choose from either their guided maps to find your trails or take a guided biking tour. Better suited for kids ages 12+, take in the scenery as you cruise south from La Jolla Cove past the Children's Pool to Windansea, Crystal Pier and the Pacific Beach Boardwalk. Or trek to the top of Mount Soledad (best for older teens)—at 822 feet and only 1.2 miles from the ocean, this ride is tough but the spectacular views offer ample reward.

Mission Bay Bike Path

Heading further south along the coast, Mission Bay has a safe, off-the-main-streets path that stretches 12 miles. Completely flat, it's ideal for both little and big kids alike who want an easier ride. Cruise along Fiesta Island, SeaWorld and more—all with breathtaking water views.

Bayshore Bikeway on Coronado

There's something to be said for crossing the historic bridge into San Diego's very own little "island." This pedestrian- and bike-friendly trail begins at the Coronado Ferry Landing and continues for a full 9 miles to Imperial Beach . The path includes a ride past the legendary Hotel del Coronado and the San Diego Bay National Wildlife Refuge, a 3,900-acre wetlands that hosts many endangered and migratory birds. Stop at either for a rest and some great sightseeing.

> Complete Guide to the Bayshore Bikeway

Mission Trails

Heading inland along Junipero Serra Road in Santee, get off the coastal path for some amazing mountain views at the Mission Trails Regional Park . Ride around Lake Murray while immersing yourself in nature for a 3.2 mile route or start at the visitor center for an easy 2.5 mile out-and-back to the Old Mission Dam, running parallel to the San Diego River. Keep an eye out for some fun bird watching along the way.

> Guide to Mission Trails Bike Paths

Lake Hodges Suspension Bridge

Just to be able to say you rode the longest stressed ribbon bridge in the world (and one of only 4 in the western hemisphere), head to Escondido for a fun ride above the water! A total of 990 feet long and 12 feet wide, take a ride across and continue onto the trails for a scenic route. Start at sunset near Via Rancho Parkway and take the mile-long paved route to get to the bridge.

Electric Semi Truck

Heavy equipment, first ever electric semi truck rides into mexico with sdg&e.

Avatar for Jo Borrás

San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) says the maiden voyage of their Class 8 heavy-duty electric semi marks the first time an electric semi has crossed the border hauling a standard load, marking an important milestone as the two nations move toward a net zero future.

The electric semi truck – one of 11 Peterbilt 579EV Class 8 trucks bought by San Diego-based Bali Express last year – made its first trip to Mexico carrying an unspecified load of goods through the Port of Entry at Otay Mesa, which connects Southern California to the city of Tijuana, Mexico.

Bali Express’ electric trucks will utilize SDG&E’s recently activated HD charging infrastructure to provide “reliable and affordable” electric freight options for medium and heavy-duty EVs crossing the US/Mexico border.

The SDG&E-powered chargers were partially funded through a $200,000 grant from the California Energy Commission’s Clean Transportation Program. That program has put more than $1 billion to alternative fuel and vehicle technology projects designed to improve public health while bringing both environmental and economic benefits to communities throughout the state.

Those sentiments were echoed by San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria. “The historic crossing of this electric freight truck symbolizes San Diego’s commitment to innovation, cross-border cooperation and our binational community,” said Gloria, in a statement . “We’re not just reducing emissions, we’re building a cleaner future for people living near our border , and leading the way in international trade and environmental responsibility.”

Meanwhile, Executive Director of SDG&E Caroline Winn called the new charging corridor , “an example of how collaboration can create new and innovative ways to rethink how to move transportation systems toward electrification.”

The Peterbilt 579EV trucks have an 82,000 lb. GCWR and is powered by the same 670 hp  Meritor 14Xe “epowertrain” used in the PACCAR Kenworth t680e that debuted back in 2022 . That system integrates electric motors and drive axles into a single unit, making it easy for manufacturers to electrify their fleets by maintaining existing (re: ICE) axle mounting hardware.

The big Petes have approx. 150 miles of range and are capable of fully charging their massive, 400 kWh batteries in about 3 hours.

Electrek’s Take

trek san diego rides

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has approved a landmark plan to end the sale of gas-powered vehicles by 2035. And, while California is just one state, it’s important to remember that, as California’s fleets go, so too go the fleets of Mexico, Arizona, Colorado , Washington State, and others.

If we’re lucky, the whole country will be electric-only well before then .

Maurizio Cattelan, Zoe Saldana join iconoclastic Vatican Biennale exhibition inside women’s prison

The installation '"I piedi, insieme al cuore, portano la stanchezza e il peso della vita" ('The feet, together with the heart, carry the tiredness and weight of life') by Italian artist Maurizio Catalan is displayed on the facade of the church next to the women's prison at the Giudecca island during the 60th Biennale of Arts exhibition in Venice, Italy, Wednesday, April 17, 2024. A pair of nude feet — dirty, wounded and vulnerable — are painted on the façade of the Venice women’s prison chapel. It’s the work of Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan and part of the Vatican’s pavilion at the Venice Biennale contemporary art show in an innovative collaboration between inmates and artists.

That Cattelan is the lead artist is striking, given that his provocative life-size wax statue of Pope John Paul II lying on his side, crushed by a massive meteorite, shocked Catholics when it was displayed at the 2001 Biennale. The new work, titled “Father,” is considered a thematic counterpoint to a performance piece he produced for the 1999 Biennale titled “Mother,” during which a religious ascetic was buried under sand, with only his hands clasped in prayer showing.

The Vatican’s culture minister, Cardinal Jose Tolentino de Mendonca, praised the work, which he said recalled the naked, dirty feet of Caravaggio’s saints, while also being highly symbolic of the journey behind the Holy See’s pavilion, showing “the desire to dirty one’s feet, to show that whoever has feet has a carnality.’’

Tolentino de Mendonca, prefect of the Dicastery for Culture and Education, said the Vatican did not want to shy away from artists or works that might be considered iconoclastic, or critical of institutions like the Catholic church.

“Pope Francis calls us to dialogue. Dialogue is not just with the people who are mirrors of ourselves,’’ he told The Associated Press. “We did not seek out easy artists. We sought real artists. Cattelan’s work is very interesting under a religious point of view, because there is something iconoclastic in his work, but also in the mystic there is something that can be called iconoclastic, in the sense of deconstructing the religious representation.’’

Pope Francis, who met with over 200 artists in the Sistine Chapel last year, will see for himself when he visits the pavilion April 28, meeting inmates and artists, and according to the prefect not just the ones participating in the pavilion.

Cattelan, who wandered by the work as preview tours continued this week, declined to discuss his contribution but said the feet would be reproduced on a church in Rome in the future.

Cattelan’s artwork can be viewed by anyone who makes the trek to the Giudecca island prison. Those who want to see the other works will be guided through the prison on four daily tours by inmates, leaving bags and mobile phones in lockup.

Closed Wednesdays, a maximum 600 people will view the pavilion each week during the Biennale’s run from April 20-Nov. 26. The 60th International Art Exhibition comprises 88 national pavilion s along with a main show curated this year by Brazilian Adriano Pedrosa.

On a recent tour, three inmates wearing elegant black and white smocks made by prison seamstresses guided journalists through an installation by Simone Fattal who transformed inmates’ poems into small ceramic plaques hung along a brick alleyway.

The tour continued to a prison coffee bar decorated with posters by onetime Catholic nun Corita Kent and into a gallery where Claire Tabouret has painted images from photographs provided by inmates of themselves and loved ones.

The conceptual artistic duo known as Claire Fontaine provided a neon eye with a slash through it for an outdoor corridor, and another neon sign that reads: “Siamo con voi nella notte,” (“We are with all of you in the night”).

That sign, in a courtyard where the inmates can gather during the day, provides a reassuring blue glow into the overlooking cells where they sleep.

“When we read this writing, it gives us encouragement, because there is someone with us day and night,” said one inmate named Manuela, who like the others declined to give their full names. “At night, we see the blue light, so we know it is there.”

The tour ended with a 15-minute film by Italian director Marco Perego starring his wife, actor Zoe Saldana, both of whom tagged along. Saldana plays an inmate in her final hours before release, and she took inspiration from the inmates who appeared in the film. To protect their privacy, the film can only be seen within the prison walls.

“What we wanted to provide for them was just a little bit of visibility, and to add a little bit of levity through art, which is exactly what we accomplished,’’ Saldana said.

Their desire for visibility was expressed in letters that the women gave the couple each night after filming, and through requests to pose with the couple for photos, which Saldana said they printed as keepsakes for the women.

Chiara Parisi, the director of the Centre Pompidou-Metz and one of the curators, said the project created a unique synergy between artists and inmates that opened lines of empathy. After the pavilion closes at the end of the Biennale, she said a coat of paint would likely cover Cattelan’s work, while the other pieces will find other venues; she said she hoped its larger legacy would be other similar initiatives.

“Through this pavilion, we hope to truly demonstrate the desire for freedom, the work to get out, to be free is something essential,” Parisi told AP. “Detention is a moment in their lives, and the artists say so, they themselves say so. Just a moment, a photograph, that should not impact what comes after, should not prejudice their future lives.”
