Sweet and endearing. You feel the stage to screen confines of The Trip to Bountiful , but that just means you get to stay zeroed in on Cicely Tyson for longer and who doesn’t want that? Really enjoyed how the film explores those generational tensions, the reflection and homesickness that come in the later years of life, and how the film uses its Jim Crow era setting as a piece of the story without building it into the main focus of the film. I love “grandma cinema”, whatever that means. There is value in stories that center around the oldest members of society!!

The 1985 film version of Horton Foote's play has stayed with me. I watched it many years ago now, but the simple tale of an old woman yearning for the past resonated with me. It's a story that feels old-fashioned in a really delightful way. When I heard about this new TV version, my interest was definitely piqued.

Lifetime's shot at the classic story is probably not as good as the earlier film, but it's really quite fine. Cicely Tyson is good as the protagonist, with the supporting cast turning in adequate performances (with the possible exception of Keke Palmer, who seems a bit out of her depth). The movie is refreshing in today's super-hurried world where television has to…

Surprisingly delightful and a slight improvement over Peter Masterson's 1985 version. Cicely Tyson anchors this production with a subdued, poignant performance. Every bit as capable and moving is Blair Underwood, who nails his final monologue. Though she's meant to be a counterbalance, Vanessa Williams's over-the-top turn feels out of place.

Started out Black History Month with Ancestor Cicely. 🖤🤎

I would’ve like to see actual flashback scenes rather than just hearing Mother Watts tell stories about her life, but it was interestingly relieving to watch a movie about Black people set in the Jim Crow era without it being hella traumatizing AND without it being written as if segregation and all didn’t exist.

Cicely Tyson carries this version of Horton Foote's classic, which is essentially just a filmed version of the stage revival that won her an Emmy. Luckily, this knows exactly what it is--a modest story told modestly and elevated greatly by Tyson's central performance. She's amazing here--delicate, subtle, nostalgic, and willful in her pursuit of a return to Bountiful. She should have won the Emmy (though it's hard to fault Jessica Lange), and costar Blair Underwood should have been nominated. This is a brisk yet deeply rewarding watch even if to just see Tyson at work.
