To help you prepare for your Vietnam travel, we have put together some tips on Vietnam tourism such as the best time to visit Vietnam, things to do in Vietnam and so on. Read on to learn more!

Best time to visit Vietnam

The best time to visit Vietnam is during the months of spring (February to April) and autumn (August to October). This is when the Vietnam weather is most suitable, with the temperatures moderate and rainfall lighter. In spring, the months of March and April have the lowest rainfall across all destinations and temperatures are pleasant, though still cool in the far northern part of Vietnam. Vietnam tourism tends to peak in different parts of the country in different times of the year due to these differences in weather.

How to reach Vietnam

The two main international airports for Vietnam travel are Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. Connecting flights to both these airports are available from Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Kochi etc. on airlines such as Thai Airways, Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, and Air India etc.

Indigo Airlines has launched a direct flight to Hanoi from Kolkata with effect from October 2019, which has significantly improved Vietnam tourism from India.

Vietnam Visa for Indians

The process of obtaining a Vietnam visa for Indians is relatively easily and painless, especially if you are applying online. If you wish to handle your application yourself, you can apply through this website which is recognized by the Vietnam Immigration Department.

The application once submitted online gets processed within 3 business days. Once your e-visa is approved, you need to print it out and carry it with you on your Vietnam trip. Upon arrival at the port of entry in Vietnam (Hanoi/Ho Chi Minh City/Da Nang), you will be required to show your Approval Letter and passport and hand over two passport-size photos (4cm x 6cm) and cash payment for the Stamping Fee to the Immigration Officer, who will then stamp the Vietnam Visa in your passport.

If you wish to apply for your visa offline directly through the Vietnam Embassy, you can do so with the consideration that it might take 7-10 working days. You can also make use of MakeMyTrip’s Visa Assistance service for Vietnam.

Places to visit in Vietnam

Vietnam is a country full of interesting contrasts, and Vietnam tourism offers the traveller a variety of things to do and attractions to marvel at. The currency of Vietnam is the Vietnamese Dong - VND. Here are some of the principal places to visit in Vietnam, which you can easily pre-book in your Vietnam itinerary with the help of your travel consultant to ensure hassle-free travel.

Ha Long Bay

For a magical and serene experience, visit the enchanting Ha Long Bay in northern Vietnam. With its emerald green waters and towering limestone formations rising from the water like sea dragons, Ha Long Bay is one of the most popular places to visit in Vietnam. The Bay is home to 2,000 islands studded with caves, picturesque beaches and lovely floating villages. Cat Ba Island, one of the largest islands here, is one of the prominent Vietnam tourist places and is known for its National Park with wonderful trekking opportunities. Another national park called the Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park is home to picturesque caves like the Hang Son Doong Cave and Paradise Cave. There are also lesser-known Vietnam beaches like Tua Chau, Soi Sim and Tiptop that are perfect for basking in the sun and indulging in water sports like scuba diving and kayaking. Ha Long Bay tours are very popular in Vietnam honeymoon packages.

Cu Chi Tunnels

Located in Ho Chi Minh City, the Cu Chi network of tunnels is about 250 kilometers long and was created in 1940 by the soldiers as a hiding spot during the time of Vietnam War and later American war. The network consists of winding tunnels, narrow branches, countless hidden doors, storage facilities for weapons, and secret paths for canals and rivers that end at the Cambodia border. Visitors can explore the tunnels, watch a black and white informative movie, get their pictures clicked against the massive war tanks and also try their hand at firing any of the original weapons kept here. For history buffs, this is one of the most popular Vietnam tours to add to a Vietnam itinerary.

Reunification Palace

The Reunification Palace is one of the must-visit places in Ho Chi Minh City. The Palace served as the residence of the President of South Vietnam during the Vietnam War. The palace is now known as the iconic spot where a North Vietnamese Army tank crashed into the entry gate and marked the end of the Vietnam War in 1975. The two tanks which were used to capture the palace can still be seen parked outside the palace. Surrounded by lush trees, the palace serves as a museum of the 1970’s now. Its basement still has tunnels, a war room, and a telecommunications centre. There is also a casino on the fifth floor and heliport at the rooftop of the palace.

The War Remnants Museum

One of the important Vietnam tourist places to visit in Ho Chi Minh City, the War Remnants Museum gives visitors a glimpse into the Vietnam War. The museum displays a collection of American military equipment including a helicopter with rocket launchers, a fighter plane, a tank, and a bomb weighing 6,800 kg. The prime attraction of the museum is the ‘tiger cages’ where the South Vietnamese Government imprisoned their political prisoners. There are also graphic photographs of victims who suffered from the effects of ‘Agent Orange’ chemical spray.

Hanoi Old Quarter

Located near Hoan Kiem Lake in Vietnam’s charming capital Hanoi, the Old Quarter is soaked in immense history and culture and is one of the most popular places to visit in Vietnam, especially for history buffs and architecture lovers. The Old Quarter is packed with charming French colonial architecture and Buddhist pagodas. The Hanoi Opera House, National Museum of Vietnamese History, the One Pillar Pagoda, Bach Ma Temple and the mansion of the former Governor-General of French-Indochina are some of the major tourist attractions here. Other than historical attractions, The Old Quarter is also a major commercial centre, and therefore, every shopper’s delight. The bustling streets are lined with shop-houses, boutique shops, and local stalls that sell silk items, embroidered fabrics, conical hats, paintings and lacquer ware. There are also plenty of cafes, restaurants and street stalls that serve authentic Vietnamese delicacies.

Ninh Binh

Ninh Binh is one of the most unspoilt destinations in Vietnam and is located to the southeast of Hanoi. The town has an abundance of picturesque landscapes, historical architecture and religious sites. To experience the true beauty of Ninh Binh, one can take a scenic boat ride on the river and enjoy stunning views of the paddy fields, sheer limestone outcrops and naturally formed caves. For nature lovers, the Van Long Nature Reserve offers postcard perfect landscapes all around. Birdwatchers can visit the Thing Nham Bird Garden, which has a diverse collection of various species of birds. Other than the awe-inspiring natural beauty, there are also historical citadels, cathedrals, temples, and pagodas that can be found in Hoa Lu which was the ancient capital of Vietnam. There are also local markets where one can shop and indulge in authentic Vietnamese food.

Ba Na Hill, Da Nang

A beautiful mountain top resort complex, Bana Hill in Da Nang is one of the popular Vietnam tourist places. Along with plenty of sightseeing opportunities, it also offers an exciting assortment of entertainment options. The most popular attraction here is the magnificent Golden Bridge. The bridge is held by two giant stone hands emerging from the dense forests below and offers a spectacular view of the lush surroundings. Another favourite attraction among tourists is the scenic French village, where one can stroll on the cobblestoned streets past striking European style architecture and take amazing pictures. For fun moments with family, the Fantasy Park is full of amazing rides, activities and games. Whether it’s the mystical Fairy Forest, the thrilling Free-Fall Tower or the 3D mega 360-degree cinema, the park will offer unforgettable fun experiences.

Marble Mountains, Da Nang

The Marble Mountains are a group of five hills in Da Nang that are made from marble and limestone. The mountains are named after the five elements - fire, metal, earth, water and wood. The highest peak, Mt. Thuy (water), is the only one that is open to public. With dramatic peaks rising up from the flat surface of the earth, the mountains are dotted with mysterious caves, meandering tunnels, temples and Buddhist sanctuaries, making them a prominent pilgrimage destination as well. Visitors can hike up and enjoy spectacular panoramic views of other marble mountains and the picturesque coastline of Da Nang. There are also elevator facilities available for people who would like to go up straight to the summit and skip the hike. This is one of the most popular Vietnam tours to pre-book in Vietnam tour packages from India.

Chua Ong Pagoda, Hoi An

An ancient beauty, the 17 th century Chua Ong Pagoda is one of the most popular places to see in Hoi An. The shrine built in the Chinese style of architecture, is dedicated to Quan Van Truong, a brave and talented General during the Three Kingdom period. The stunning architecture of the pagoda is divided into four sections. The main hall houses Quan Van Truong’s statue which is known for its brilliant craftsmanship and is surrounded by two escort statues and two horses. Ancient artefacts and paintings are also displayed within the pagoda.

An Bang Beach

It offers a wide range of fun seaside activities such as swimming, paddle-boarding, and surfing. Visitors can indulge in water sports, bask in the sun, and enjoy a peaceful stroll along the shore. There are also beachfront resorts which not only provide comfortable accommodation but also striking views of the Marble Mountains, Da Nang Bay and Cham Island. Vietnam honeymoon packages can be customised to include this enchanting beach destination.

The Saigon Central Post Office

The Central Post Office in Ho Chi Minh City is a gorgeous example of French colonial architecture. Designed by Alfred Foulhoux, the grand building was constructed between 1886 and 1891 and features a French style of architecture. The bright yellow painted building has arched windows and intricately patterned tile flooring on the inside. The walls are painted with two maps, one displaying Cambodia and Vietnam and the other displaying the Saigon region. This exquisite building is used as a post office even today, offering postal services as well as stamps and postcards that can bought as souvenirs to take back home.

Ans. Your most-awaited trip to Vietnam can be planned perfectly from a variety of exciting Vietnam tour packages available online. And, while you are all set for the holiday, do not forget to make your packing list alongside. Here’s what you should absolutely carry on your trip: A sturdy backpack to accommodate some basic clothing, sunscreen, snacks, water and other local purchases you make. Travel pillows for those frequent trips throughout the country. Ear plugs for good sleep at night. Quick-drying and lightweight towels. Medicines for diarrhoea or stomach upsets. Pack covered clothing for visits to temples, pagodas and other sacred sites. Sturdy hiking/trekking shoes, flip-flops and sandals. Travel adapters are recommended along with chargers, sunscreen and hats. Insect repellent is a must along with cortisone cream for sudden mosquito bites.

Ques. What are the biggest tourist draws in Vietnam?

Ans. Want to customise Vietnam tour packages to suit your preferences? Here are some landmarks that you should consider including in your travel plans: Khai Dinh Tomb- The tomb showcases stunning architecture that is a fusion of Roman Gothic and Buddhist influences, being commissioned in the 1920s by the Emperor of Vietnam. Do not miss the Thien Dinh and Honour Courtyard here. Con Dao Islands- These were called the Devil’s Island of Indochina and prisoners were kept securely here earlier. These islands are hot tourist favourites today with activities like snorkelling and scuba diving on offer. The beaches are gorgeous, to say the least. Marble Mountains- Lying southwards from Da Nang, the five mountain peaks draw their names from the five elements, namely water, earth, fire, wind and wood. The mountains also house several stunning caves and Buddhist shrines. On a delightful homestay, get to know the Vietnamese way of life. Make friends with your hosts and neighbors while learning about new cuisines, languages, Vietnam guided tours and traditions.

Geography and environment during Vietnam tour packages

If you're looking for a fantastic vacation destination in Southeast Asia, Vietnam should be at the top of your list. With its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage, Vietnam tour packages have something to offer every traveler. Vietnam, which occupies a long and narrow section of the Indochina peninsula, borders China, Laos, and Cambodia. Mountains can be found throughout most of Vietnam, particularly in the North and Central Highlands. The majority of the people in Vietnam live in low-lying areas with easy infrastructure and public and fertile agricultural land. Vietnam frequently experiences flooding because of the Mekong, one of the world's 12 major rivers. The Mekong Delta and nearby areas have experienced less flooding thanks to the canal and dike system's ability to distribute floodwater.

Vietnam History - Vietnam tour packages

Early History

The area that is now Vietnam has been inhabited since the beginning of time. According to archaeological discoveries, organized communities started to emerge as early as the first millennium BC. Up until the Chinese invasion in 111 BC, which caused the societies of Vietnam and China to converge, early society was mostly focused on agriculture and feudalism, with numerous dynasties ruling over different regions of Vietnam. For hundreds of years, the region was ruled by various Chinese dynasties, but in 905, the Vietnamese gained independence as a result of uprisings. Vietnam entered an era of independence in 938, marking the end of this period of Chinese imperial rule.

Recent History

French colonialists who took over Vietnam following the Sino-French War of 1884 and 1885 had an influence on it during the 19th century. Parts of Vietnam were included in French Indochina and Cambodia, and Laos which was created in 1887. First, after Vietnamese troops beat French forces in the Indochina War in 1954, the French were finally forced to give up control of the internal independence movements they had long sought to stifle. Vietnam was split up after this conflict, with separate governments in the north (headed by Ho Chi Minh) and the south (led by Ngo Dinh Diem, with American support).

The second Indochina War caused widespread destruction and upheaval for the Vietnamese people, and as a result, a large number of individuals left Vietnam in search of sanctuary in other parts of the world. Vietnam's economy had almost completely collapsed by the 1980s, which prompted additional waves of emigration from Vietnam. Vietnam has lately profited from the free economy that was established in 1986. Vietnam's economy is still growing, with agricultural and manufacturing serving as the foundation and the tour operators also making a contribution. Despite the fact that many Vietnamese people are living in poverty, literacy rates have increased significantly.

While Vietnam's history has been marked by conflict and hardship, the country has made significant strides in recent years towards economic growth and development. When visiting the capital of Vietnam through Vietnam tour packages, Hanoi, the phrase "motorcycle" comes up frequently. It's insane and chaotic, but it manages to work. It is preferable to take in this exotic vista from a rooftop cafe. Watch the uproar below as you place another coffee order.

The Mekong Delta is a must see attraction in Vietnam tour packages. Some of the friendliest people on earth reside in this wide region of floating marketplaces, emerald rice paddies, and verdant islands. For a first-hand view of life in the Delta and to get to know your neighbors, set sail for one of the sleeping islands.

Vietnam vacation packages offer an excellent opportunity to explore the vibrant villages of Vietnam's minority groups such as the Zay and the Blue and Black H'mong, amid the highlands. Due to the area's isolation, an overnight hike where you stay with a local family is a great way to explore it.

Quy Nhon is a charming seaside off the major tourist route. Even a driving trip here is worthwhile. Vietnam tour packages - Vietnam Culture and Custom

The Chinese, Khmer, French, and American civilizations have all had a different impact on Vietnam's ancient culture over hundreds of years, which may be centuries old. Whether they hail from remote villages or live in bustling metropolises, family and community connections are important to the majority of Vietnamese people. The majority of festivals and holidays are spent with the extended family, where rituals are performed, special foods are enjoyed, symbolic presents are exchanged, and ancestors are honored. Although there are certainly a lot of Catholics in Vietnam, the majority of Vietnamese practice a fascinating blend of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism. When the Vietnam War brought hardships in the 1960s and 1970s, the majority of Vietnamese people desired to integrate into society, live optimistically and modestly. Let's experience the rich cultural heritage of Vietnam through its festivals, rituals, and special foods with the help of Vietnam tour packages.

With a plethora of aesthetic ingredients populating every inch of Vietnam, there is a change in the landscape as you move from north to south and beyond, and this eclectic quality is one of the numerous reasons why Vietnam should be on your must-visit list.

Table of Content:

About vietnam, essential tips to know before travelling to vietnam, vietnam at a glance, top reasons to visit vietnam, best time to visit vietnam, top things to do in vietnam, shopping in vietnam, foods to try out in vietnam, art and culture in vietnam.

Vietnam’s history goes back about 20,000 years. The Hoabinhians were the very first modern humans to arrive and settle in modern-day Vietnam. The Red River served as a vital natural geographic and economic unit, connecting the western and northern regions through jungles and mountains, the southern area by the Red River Delta, and the eastern region by the sea.

The Cham of Central Vietnam revolted against the Chinese in 192 AD, which led to the creation of the independent kingdom of Champa. At the same time, the Chinese control loosened over the Red River Delta. This was around the period when Hinduism and Buddhism were introduced, causing Vietnam to become the first place in Southeast Asia to display the influences of Indian and Chinese cultures, thereby leading to the rise of the Indianised kingdoms of Funan and Champa.

Our Best Vietnam Tour Packages

  • English is not widely spoken throughout Vietnam. Therefore, make sure to learn a couple of the local phrases and terms for important things like food, hotels, bathrooms, and so on.
  • While ATMs are present in the modern parts of the country, they aren’t available in the smaller regions and remote areas. Hence, always carry cash with you and exchange it before your trip. Cash is especially preferred in smaller markets and other places that aren’t too touristy.
  • Different regions in Vietnam present different weather conditions. While travelling from the northern to the southern part of the country, you will experience diverse weather situations. Therefore, pack your clothes accordingly.
  • Although tipping is often expected in many places around the world, it isn’t anticipated or necessary in Vietnam. However, if you like the service at a particular place, you are always welcome to tip your server.

  • Get a local SIM card to save money on roaming charges while trying to call, text, and access the internet.

Scrumptious food

From noodles, soups, and dumplings to seafood, cakes, and rice rolls, Vietnamese cuisine will leave you spoiled for choice. If you’re accustomed to the spicy and savoury flavours found in Indian cooking, then multiple dishes in Vietnam will satisfy both your heart and your stomach with their zingy quality.

Delicious coffee

In Vietnam, coffee is not just a beverage; it’s an emotion and a valued tradition. As the world’s second-largest exporter of coffee, you can imagine just how delicious the coffee is in the country. If you can’t go a day without your cup of coffee, then your vacation days in Vietnam are bound to get even more alluring.

Warm people

Who wouldn’t want to visit a place with friendly, warm, hardworking, and pleasant people? That’s Vietnam for you. Despite the language barrier that could exist, the people of Vietnam attempt their best to communicate with you through their smiles and body language. Friends and family mean a lot to them, which is part of their hospitality and endearing nature.

Cultural diversity

Vietnam has multiple ethnicities coexisting within the country. Perhaps this potpourri of cultures and traditions is what allows Vietnam to embrace people from all over the world and include themselves in one of the safest places you will ever visit.

Spellbinding natural landscapes

Vietnam’s natural landscapes are so astonishingly eclectic that it will take you a while to believe that you haven’t stepped into a dream of your own making. Mountains, plateaus, rivers, lakes, dunes, islands—Vietnam has it all and is waiting for you to discover it through our Vietnam tour packages.

Adventurous activities

Vacations are the perfect time to let your adventurous self out in the open, and Vietnam provides many opportunities to do so. Whether you go kayaking, trekking, hiking, diving, or rock climbing, you will never run out of adventurous activities to participate in while in Vietnam.

Affordability

We all have different budgets for our holidays, and if you’re looking for an international vacation from India that won’t break the bank, Vietnam is the destination to pick. It allows you to indulge in the best activities and food while being extremely affordable.

Before booking one of our Vietnam tour packages, you will obviously want to research the best time to visit Vietnam so you can plan your trip based on the activities you enjoy and the events you’d like to witness. Since Vietnam has a tropical monsoon climate much like India the country experiences southwest and northeast monsoons.

Each part of Vietnam has varying temperatures at different times, which is why the country is ideal for visiting throughout the year. However, spring and autumn are considered to be the best seasons to visit Vietnam. Let us walk you through what each season entails so you can decide accordingly.

Spring In Vietnam (February To April)

Southern Vietnam remains humid and sweltering during spring, with temperatures fluctuating between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius and often reaching 40 degrees Celsius by March. Central Vietnam remains cooler during this time and has the same temperature as the southern region.

Northern Vietnam gets pretty cold during the spring season, with temperatures as low as 10 degrees Celsius and occasional rains. Therefore, do pack warm clothes if you’re planning to visit the northern side of the country at this time. The Vietnamese New Year, known as the Tet Festival, occurs during this period. This is the perfect season to visit Vietnam’s beaches and islands.

Summer In Vietnam (May To August)

While southern and central Vietnam can reach 40 degrees Celsius during the summer, northern Vietnam and Hanoi can reach a maximum of 30 degrees Celsius. As this is the hottest and wettest season in the country, you can expect to encounter lush greenery while experiencing a heat wave.

Summer is when travellers can catch the Ghost Festival in Vietnam and plan to journey up to the northern hills. Since rain and heat are both present during Vietnamese summers, it’s better to always carry some light and waterproof rain gear with you.

Autumn In Vietnam (September To November)

The average temperature in Vietnam during autumn is between 20 to 25 degrees Celsius. Southern Vietnam remains humid, northern Vietnam gets quite cold, and central Vietnam experiences peak rainy season at this time. This is the ideal season to explore the southern part of the country as the temperature remains quite pleasant.

Those who enjoy hiking must travel to Vietnam during the fall. This is also when you can catch the National Day and the Ooc Om Boc festival. Make sure to pack some warm clothes if you’re planning to climb up higher altitudes.

Winter In Vietnam (December To February)

When winter comes around, the temperature throughout the country ranges between 20 degrees and 26 degrees Celsius. The weather remains dry, with barely any rainfall in the southern and northern regions. Some areas in the far north experience rainfall and a bit of snow.

Pack warm clothes in your luggage as the temperatures drop during this time. Carry some light clothes if you wish to explore the places around Hanoi.

Vietnam is a destination that is supremely eclectic and diverse in terms of the activities it offers to tourists from all over the world. You will get to experience this for yourself when you explore Vietnam by selecting one of our Vietnam tour packages.

Whether you’re travelling with your family, your spouse, or all by yourself, there is no dearth of activities whatsoever in the beautiful country of Vietnam. Let us walk you through the many things you can add to your bucket list while meandering around Vietnam during your vacation.

Zip lining is one of those loved adrenaline-filled activities that is quite popular among tourists in Vietnam. The country offers varying difficulty levels to suit the different ranges of adventurers. The longest one to try in Vietnam is the one in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park in Quang Binh.

Mountain biking

The regions in Vietnam, with their eclectic landscapes and topography, ensure that travellers can engage in mountain biking. The ones to look into for this adventure include the Hoang Lien Son Mountain Range and Dalat.

Rock climbing

Vietnam’s popularity as a spot for rock climbing is ever-increasing. Ha Long Bay is where most adventure lovers flock to, as there are climbing opportunities for all types of climbers.

Scuba diving is a great way to lose yourself in the breathtaking beauty of Vietnam’s underwater world. Nha Trang, Con Dao, and Phu Quoc are some places where you can try scuba diving.

The character Carrie Bradshaw once rightly said, “I like my money right where I can see it: Hanging in my closet.” Fortunately for travellers, Vietnam is among those destinations perfect for shopaholics. It offers a variety of items to take back home with you, from souvenirs and handicrafts to affordable apparel and food products.

Your shopping-loving heart will feel happier once you’re done perusing the country’s craft centres and local markets through our Vietnam tour packages. After all, it’s called retail ‘therapy’ for a reason, right? Here are some of the items you can check out during your shopping spree in Vietnam and the best places to shop in the country:

What To Buy

Ao dai is the traditional Vietnamese costume for women, whose origin can be traced back to the 18th century. It’s a long, elegant, well-fitted dress paired with stylish pants. It’s worn by women across all age groups, especially on special occasions such as Tet, the Vietnamese New Year celebration.

These are available at stores across the country, and if you have ample time, you can also get them custom-made during your stay in Vietnam with our Vietnam tour packages.

Vietnamese Silk

Once upon a time, silk was regarded as a luxury only adorned by the elites and members of the royal family. As time passed, Vietnamese silk evolved to be included in the international market and became as popular as Indian and Chinese silk. These days, it also appears in global fashion shows as designer clothing.

Traditional villages in Vietnam still weave silk using conventional handlooms. Some of the best places to find Vietnamese silk are Hanoi’s Hang Gai Street and Van Phuc Silk Village.

Conical Hats

Conical hats, known as non la, were originally worn by Vietnamese farmers and have been associated with the country’s rice-growing culture for ages. Available in numerous sizes and designs, they are usually made using straws, bamboo cataphylls, or palm leaves. They can be bought either from the villages in Vietnam or the local markets.

Vietnamese Coffee

Vietnamese coffee is omnipresent, whether at shopping malls, cafes, or local markets. When you roam around the country, you can grab some of these delicious souvenirs by booking one of GT Holidays’ Vietnam tour packages.

Vietnam’s coffee culture is arguably linked to the capital city of Hanoi, where bags of ground or whole Robusta beans are available at affordable prices.

Lacquerware

Lacquerware is a form of craftsmanship that is vividly present in Vietnam. Vietnamese artisans have been utilising lacquer to create unique items for centuries now. The art form is employed on objects such as bowls, dishes, paintings, vases, and furniture, and you can pick based on what suits your taste and aesthetic.

Woven Handicrafts

Ethnic handicraft products created by ethnic minorities in Vietnam are some of the best handmade goods you can take home from your trip. Many of these woven handicrafts can be found in the villages of Vietnam, allowing tourists to select from various scarves, backpacks, wallets, purses, clothes, and textiles.

If you want to discuss these handicrafts with the artists who make them, you can ask your guide to help you learn more about this intricate art form.

Vietnamese Paintings

French influence leaked into Vietnamese art during the 19th and 20th centuries, and the remnants of this influence are still visible in Vietnamese paintings that are renowned worldwide for their technique and colours.

The paintings depict moments of life in Vietnam, including lifestyle, festivals, and the country’s natural beauty. Different materials, including silk, oil, and sand, are used to bring these paintings to life. These paintings, with their simple subjects and bright hues, serve as the perfect decoration piece for your home.

Where To Shop

  • Street Night Market (Hanoi): For accessories, textiles, and traditional artworks.
  • Dong Xuan Market (Hanoi): For handbags, accessories, electronics, traditional Vietnamese clothing, fresh produce, and local handicrafts.
  • Ben Thanh Market (Ho Chi Minh City): For Vietnamese coffee, spices, handicrafts, accessories, and clothes.
  • Binh Tay Market (Ho Chi Minh City): For clothes, footwear, fresh produce, handicrafts, and lacquerware.
  • An Dong Market (Ho Chi Minh City): For fabrics, ceramics, woodwork items, handicrafts, coasters, and dried foods.
  • Cai Rang Floating Market (Can Tho): For fresh produce, handicrafts, and regional delicacies.

Things To Remember When Shopping In Vietnam

  • Once you land in the country, make sure to exchange the currency with Vietnamese Dong. Plan this currency exchange in advance so you can begin your shopping experience in Vietnam stress-free.
  • Get ready to bargain. The items found in the street markets are often quoted more for tourists. So, you must haggle and bargain, which the shopkeepers expect the travellers to do as well. At the end of the bargain, you can expect to pay anywhere between 60% and 70% of what the shopkeeper had initially quoted.
  • Since bargaining can often be intense, remember to stay calm, smile, and enjoy the moment. Most importantly, be respectful and know when to stop, especially when it’s just a couple of cents.
  • Learn some of the easy and basic Vietnamese phrases so it becomes easier to bargain and have conversations at the local markets.
  • Whether you’re purchasing handicrafts, silk, or any other item, remember to check the quality before making the payment.
  • Certain countries have customs restrictions, especially on animal and agricultural items. Therefore, check your country’s customs rules before buying anything.

Do you belong to the category of people who would literally fly for delicious food? If your answer is a resounding yes, then Vietnam is sure to win you over. With its fresh ingredients, exotic flavours, unique textures, and colourful exteriors, Vietnamese dishes feel like a burst of spices and succulence in your mouth.

Be it fine dining or roadside stalls, there isn’t a single corner of Vietnam that doesn’t offer scrumptious meals to its residents and tourists, all of which you can relish through our Vietnam tour packages. Every region in the country brings in something new for your taste buds. While northern Vietnam is more inclined towards elegance and simplicity, southern Vietnam is prone towards sugary goodness. For the ones who are always on the hunt for spice and zest in their meals, central Vietnam should be on your itinerary. It’s the spicy element which makes Vietnamese food so enticing to Indians as well.

Let’s explore some of the various kinds of foods that you absolutely must try in Vietnam when you book your vacation using our Vietnam tour packages:

We all know this list would be incomplete without mentioning pho, right? After all, it happens to be among the most loved and well-known traditional Vietnamese dishes. Pho is a comforting noodle soup made with rice noodles, broth, herbs, and sliced meat such as chicken or beef. The broth is made with spices like ginger, cinnamon, and star anise, which give the soup a distinct fragrance and flavour.

Originating in the northern part of the country, it was initially consumed by commoners who resided close to the Red River before it appeared at diners in the early 20th century. This dish’s versatility allows food lovers to consume it at any time of the day, and it is a common breakfast item in the country.

Banh mi is a delightful combination of Vietnamese and French cuisine as it’s a sandwich where the bread is a baguette, which is a long and thin French loaf. The filling of this famous sandwich consists of pickled vegetables, butter, cheese, chilli sauce, cold cuts, fresh cilantro, and fried eggs.

While Hanoi usually presents a simpler version of banh mi, it tends to be filled with more sauces in Ho Chi Minh City. The sandwich is easily found at numerous bakeries and street food stalls all over the country and is eaten both as a snack and as a quick meal.

Do you love to order spring rolls whenever you have Chinese food? If so, you must try goi cuon, Vietnamese spring rolls.

These healthy appetisers have a translucent exterior created using softened rice paper sheets. Their filling consists of vermicelli, fresh vegetables, tofu, pork, or shrimp. These spring rolls are usually served with a nutty and rich peanut dipping sauce.

You may have had crepes and pancakes before, but have you ever had one filled with pork, shrimp, onions, herbs, and bean sprouts? Well, if you haven’t, you can try out these Vietnamese crepes while exploring the country with our Vietnam tour packages.

This dish’s batter includes water, coconut cream, turmeric, and rice flour. Once it’s cooked, its outer appearance is almost that of an omelette. After being wrapped in lettuce leaves, it is often served with a special fish sauce.

Originating in Central Vietnam, mi quang is a noodle soup made of rice noodles, herbs, pork broth, and some form of protein, such as pork, beef, shrimp, or fish. It is topped with rice crackers, an egg, and peanuts.

The aromatic and spicy taste of the broth is developed using pork bones, chillies, and turmeric. There are multiple variations of this dish found throughout Vietnam, including those with quail eggs and sucking snails. You can find numerous toppings on this noodle soup, such as coriander, lettuce, scallions, and mustard greens.

Seafood lovers should keep cha ca on their list of must-try Vietnamese dishes. This grilled fish delicacy is so popular that a street was named after it. The people of Vietnam aren’t surprised, as its history is deeply rooted in Vietnamese culinary heritage, dating back over 100 years.

This dish uses catfish, which is marinated in a sauce made using garlic, turmeric, shrimp paste, dill, ginger, and chilli. Once the fish is grilled, it is served with vermicelli noodles, herbs, and peanuts.

The Vietnamese noodle dish cao lau originated in Hoi An, a city in central Vietnam. It is a mix of local, Japanese, and Chinese cuisine. Reputed to be one of the most famous dishes of Vietnam, the name of the dish means ‘high storey’, which could be related to the explanation that it was exclusively served to the upper class, who often dined on the upper floors back in the 17th century.

This dish, topped with crispy wonton-style crackers, consists of thick noodles, herbs, bean sprouts, and roasted pork. Usually served with lime wedges or chilli sauce, cao lau can be found in restaurants, street food stalls, and markets across the country. The herbs added to the noodle soup, such as Vietnamese fish mint, coriander, and basil, enhance the taste of the broth.

Hanoi was the city that led to the inception of bun cha, a traditional Vietnamese pork dish. Consisting of a foundation of fresh rice noodles over which the grilled pork patties are served, the dish also includes a variety of herbs and a tangy dipping sauce on the side.

The pork patties are juicy inside and crispy outside, perfectly contrasting with the sauce, which combines lime juice, chilli, sugar, vinegar, and fish sauce. Bun cha also comes with a side of pickled vegetables. While it’s famous as a lunch dish, it is also consumed during dinners.

Vietnam has three major religions: Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism. Smaller religious groups, such as Muslims and Christians, are also present in the country, and some Hindu temples are also present.

The primary language spoken in Vietnam is Vietnamese. A couple of other languages show their influence on the country’s primary language, such as Chinese, French, Russian, and English. The numerous ethnic groups present in the country speak languages such as Khmer, Tay, Cham, and Muong. The more urban parts of Vietnam are where English is spoken abundantly, making it easier for tourists to travel around these regions.

Silk painting is a captivating form of art prevalent across Vietnam. While silk painting can be found in various Asian countries such as China and Japan, certain elements set Vietnamese silk paintings apart, such as the liberal use of colours and French influences.

Calligraphy is yet another art form that is an integral part of Vietnam’s culture, even though it was preserved mainly for the elite in the past. Although it was practised in three different scripts, Quoc-ngu, Chu Nom, and Chinese, modern calligraphy only employs the Quoc-ngu script.

When it comes to Vietnamese folk art, Dong Ho painting is a treasured part of Vietnam’s culture. Woodblock paintings are created using pieces of wood cut into intricate designs and organic paints applied. Lately, woodblock paintings have become popular outside Vietnam as well. Such paintings are often purchased during the Lunar New Year, and the themes include daily life, beloved stories, and positive omens.

Performing arts

Dance is a vital part of Vietnam’s culture, with traditional dances performed in opera houses, theatres, and during festivals. The Vietnamese lion dance is often performed for festivals and includes acrobatics and martial arts. There is also the Lantern Dance, Lotus Dance, Ribbon Dance, and fan dance, and you can surely experience one or many of these dance forms during your trip with our Vietnam tour packages.

Music was essential to Vietnam’s Nguyen Dynasty, during which royal court music was performed and enjoyed. Vietnam has about 50 national musical instruments, including wind, percussion, and string instruments, which are also used in other art forms. Three primary kinds of music exist in Vietnam: folk music, imperial music, and Ca Tru, a type of chamber music recognised by UNESCO and included in the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.

Vietnamese martial arts are also part of the country’s culture of performing arts. Although influenced by Chinese martial arts, they have a distinct style of their own.

Popular Vietnam Tour Packages

Faqs about vietnam tour packages.

Q. Which is the best time to visit Vietnam? A. When going through Vietnam packages, you need to be mindful of the best time to visit Vietnam. The Vietnam weather varies as you go from north to south, from temperature to tropical climate, presenting travel opportunities year-round. The spring months between March and April are the best to visit Vietnam with the weather being pleasant through the day with days of intermittent rainfall. Pick the cold months between December and February to visit destinations like Sa Pa, Hanoi and Halong Bay. The night temperature goes down to 4 degree Celsius. For a trip to destinations in central Vietnam such as Hue or Hoi An, choose to visit between February and August when the weather is around 30 degree Celsius. There are plenty of things to do in Vietnam. To visit southern Vietnam, primarily Ho Chi Minh City and Mekong Delta region, visit between December and May when the monsoons recede. It is a great time to take a boat ride on the Mekong Delta, see the floating markets, stop at one of the little islands, try out a fish dish, visit a crocodile farm and return to Ho Chi Minh City in the evening or the next day. The winters are a good time to visit Ho Chi Minh City as you can walk on foot, take a vespa ride, see the oldest post office, sample some Pho at a street-side cafe and explore the city’s architectural landmarks. Q. How can I get around in Vietnam? A. Once you have figured out how to reach Vietnam, you need to study the local transport arrangement of the city and how to get around. Several Vietnam tour packages offer pick up and drop off services from the point of sightsee to your hotel. Else it is always fun hopping on the public transport and travelling like a local. Vietnam’s most economic mode of transport comprise cyclo, buses, XeOm and taxis. The most common among them is the cyclo which is a three-wheeled bicycle taxi that comes with a double seat supported by two wheels in the front and a cycle seat at the back supported by a single wheel. The most inexpensive mode of transport, you can find them crowding Vietnam’s streets at any time of the day. This is the best mode of transport for covering shorter distances. You can even try out the XeOm which is a motorcycle taxi quite popular with tourists. They can be hailed from anywhere, found in large numbers outside tourist attractions. These vehicles come equipped with helmets as it is mandatory for every pillion rider. For intercity travel on your Vietnam trip, local buses are your best bet. They too are economic and can be found in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Ultimately, there are the regular metered taxis too which are quite reliable as long as you hire them from a reputed agent. Look up Mai Linh, VinaTaxi or Vinasun. Q. Are there direct fights from India to Vietnam? A. Ahead of booking one of the Vietnam holiday packages you need to figure out the flight connectivity to Vietnam from your city. You can fly non-stop from New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport and Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport to Vietnam’s Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City. There are flights from Hyderabad, Chennai and Bangalore to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City but they are hopping flights that come with one or more stopover. Before you figure out the places to visit in Vietnam, you need to quickly book your flights first. A Delhi to Hanoi direct flight takes approximately 4 hours 30 minutes onboard VietJet. The other airlines flying on the route include Singapore Airlines, Thai Smile, Vistara, national carrier Air India, Vietnam Airlines to name a few. A direct flight from Delhi to Ho Chi Minh City takes around 5 hours, with Vietnam Airlines offering non-stop connectivity from New Delhi to Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City). The other airlines serving the route comprise VietJet, Air India, SpiceJet, GoFirst, IndiGo and Vistara. Q. What is the currency of Vietnam and how easily can I exchange it? A. Vietnam Dong or VND is the official currency of Vietnam. The currency has normal and polymerised paper notes and no coins. The smallest bills comprise VND 1.000, VND 2.000 and VND 5.000. Then there is VND 10.000, VND 20.000, VND 50.000, VND 100.00, VND 200.00 and VND 500.00, with the latter being the upper limit. The locals from street-food stalls to souvenir outlets and even several cafes and restaurants prefer cash over card for their monetary transactions, so it is advisable to always keep sufficient cash with you instead of relying on cards alone. You are advised to not exchange money in your home country as you may not get competitive rates. It is best to use the Vietnamese banks for the same. At Noi Bai International Airport, and Tan San Nhat International Airport, you will come across Exim Bank and Vietinbank currency exchange stalls post customs and immigration. The exchange rate at airports may not really be favourable, so just change a small amount that can cover your taxi fare and other immediate requirements. At banks you can get the currency changed at a commission fee between 0.5 to 2 per cent. You will find Vietcombank, Agribank, Eximbank and Vietinbank all over the city who change money. Q. Is English widely spoken in Vietnam? A. English is widely spoken across all major tourist destinations and important cities in Vietnam, and as a tourist you can easily get by in English. But when you travel to the remoter reaches of the country, whether hiking or trekking in the North or far-flung islands in the southern coast you might find it a little difficult to get around with just English as Vietnamese is the official language of the country and the locals in the far-off parts of the country may just speak their own tongue and nothing else. English is taught in schools as a result of which many city residents can speak in English, but their fluency may vary depending on what their work profile is. But basic English most locals can manage. Q. What is the local mode of transport in Vietnam? A. Some of Vietnam’s local and economic means of transport comprise taxis, buses, cyclo and XeOm. Cyclo is basically a three-wheeled bicycle taxi that has a double seat and supported by two wheels in the front and a smaller cycle seat at the back which is supported by a single wheel. For covering shorter distances, this could be a great mode of transport. The XeOm on the other hand is a motorcycle taxi that is regularly used by tourists to get from one place to other in Vietnam. You can hail them from anywhere, and they are usually concentrated near tourist attractions. The XeOms come equipped with helmets which is mandatory for the pillion rider too. For long distance intercity travel, local buses are a great means. They are economic and are very common across Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, particularly Hanoi has very good bus network. Lastly, the surest way to travel within the city is by a metered taxi. Hire it from a reputed agency and get a fixed meter price. Some good taxi companies are Vinasun, Mai Linh and VinaTaxi. Q. What is the time zone of Vietnam? A. Vietnam is on Indochina time and the time zone is GMT+7. Vietnam is 1 hours and 30 minutes ahead of India. Q. Is Vietnam a safe place to travel to? A. Vietnam is a safe and a friendly country to travel to. But with a bit of common sense you can make your trip smooth and hassle free. The locals dress conservatively, and you are advised to not show too much skin and attract unwanted attention. You need to cover yourself properly when visiting a pagoda. Keep your cash, flight tickets, passport, credit cards and other necessary documents in the safe of your hotel. Refrain from wearing a lot of jewellery and keep your bag close to your chest when riding a XeOm. Losing temper in public is frowned upon, keep a calm mind and you will do better.
