Book Review: Virginia Wine Travel Journal 2019
“Wine-ing” in Virginia
Virginia wine travel journal 2019, author: nancy bauer, photographer: rick collier, publisher: virginia wine in my pocket; 2nd edition (2019), reviewed by ralph peluso, literary editor, zebra rating – 5 stripes, alexandria,va-with baseball season in full swing, i could not resist a twist on the famous tom hanks quote from the great movie, a league of their own. yes, there is wine-ing in virginia, nancy bauer has enhanced my perspective about virginia wines and area wineries, ranging from good to napa valley east. talking about virginia wine travel journal 2019 , bauer says, “i want this book to do three things: inspire readers to become enthusiasts and get out into virginia wine country more often; encourage all enthusiasts to get curious about what it takes to create what’s in their glass, because greater knowledge translates to greater appreciation. finally, i’d like readers to serve as an army of advocates for wine tourism in our state., “do not be shy,” she says. “talk it up with friends, family, and out-of-state visitors. wine as a tourist attraction is a great thing. it develops the economy in depressed rural areas. many family farms would have disappeared if not for virginia’s wine industry.”, nancy’s work combines the facts with an array of fascinating geographic locations. she offers places to visit that fit nearly every taste and wallet size. one fact is that virginia is the u.s.’s 7th largest wine producing state. there are more than 300 wineries stretching from the atlantic coast to the southwest panhandle., the book is chock full of useful, interesting information. virginia has created, as the author refers to them, “new-to-you grapes.” virginia vintners make beautiful chardonnay and cabernet franc, of course. but do not miss out on the albariño or petit manseng or petit verdot, just a sampling from the new to you group., planning a romantic getaway delve into the weekend wine excursion itineraries. you’ll soon be humming along on a bucolic drive to your destination of choice. nancy has included an easy checklist to track your winery adventures., not all the wineries are rated as equal. some are very modest, while others move toward destination-location elegant. my favorites are wineries that combine ambience like music with fun wines..
Nancy’s involvement in making wine tasting easier to enjoy goes back a decade. In Virginia Wine Travel Journal 2019 , she has condensed mounds of research about Virginia wines into one simple guide that ranges from travel directions to human interest stories and background about locales.
Nancy and her husband live in virginia and are focused on enhancing the state’s wine experience for all. “i’m looking at launching a series of events that change up the model of the traditional wine festival,” she says. “i see moving away from having dozens of wineries and thousands of people. if you’ve been to 25 or 50 or 100 virginia wineries, and plenty of people out there have, you start to crave something more intimate., “i want a place where you can talk one-on-one with a handful of winemakers, from select wineries you may not have heard about. then compare notes and gossip a little with others who enjoy the same,” she added. “that’s what i’m looking to create. fingers crossed, and stay tuned”, virginia wine travel journal 2019 is a unique guide to virginia wine country, a handy, wire-bound planner with checklists, short articles, hidden gems, and wine country stories. you can plot getaways, track visits, jot notes, and get insider tips. follow the easy road map to the wines of virginia. but for now, just serve yourself a generous pour and read. enhancing your next winery experience depends on it, rating – 5 zebra stripes..

Drink More Wine! How Virginia’s Wineries are Going Virtual and What We Can Do to Help
Virginia wineries have taken a hit from the COVID-19 pandemic. With government rulings that they can no longer serve customers in their wineries for the time being, they have had to get creative. So if you love Virginia wine, there’s no reason why you can’t continue to enjoy the experience—even from your own home.
I talked with Nancy Bauer, author of the Virginia Wine Travel Journal and founder of the app and website Virginia Wine in my Pocket , and she offered up a number of ways that area wineries are still engaging wine lovers and how you can get involved.
Join a Virtual Tasting
Lots of area wineries are now offering “virtual tastings.” They announce in advance what wines they will be tasting on a particular date, and bundle up the bottles in a specially-priced package for either delivery or pickup for those who sign up. Then, you simply join the wine tasting virtually via a Zoom link or Facebook Live.
For example, Breaux Vineyards is posting virtual tastings dates on their Events or Facebook pages, along with instructions on how to join in. Its tastings are led by Wine Educator/Sommelier Jim Koennicke in a fun an entertaining way to help wine lovers get to know the wines from the comfort of their own homes.
Purchase Virginia Wines
Most Virginia wineries are offering special pricing on their wines, either by the bottle or the case—some as low as 50% off the normal price, or more. Others are offering free shipping or personal home delivery for a minimum purchase.
Howard O’Brien, of Chateau O’Brien , loads up his truck with cases of wine daily to deliver to his customer’s front doors. “He goes up to the door, drops the case of wine, backs up 10 feet, and chats when his customers come to the door. Then he gets in his truck and goes to the next delivery,” Bauer said. “He is gung ho about getting his wine out.”
“The wineries had a great year in 2019, with quality that was some of the best in a decade or more, and plenty of quantity, so there is lots of wine available,” Bauer added.
Join a Wine Club
Some wineries are offering deals if you join their wine club. The Winery at Bull Run is promoting immediate discounts on its wines, and for a limited time, participants can sign up with no registration fees ($30-$100 value). With the membership, members will receive access to its exclusive Barrel House and General’s Deck, discounts on event tickets, free tastings, reserved picnic tables, and more.
Join a Facebook Winery Support Group
Nancy Bauer recently received the Atlantic Seaboard Wineries Association’s Wine Media Person of the Year Award for her support of the wine industry. She has been a staunch supporter and is now doing her bit to help during the COVID-19 shutdowns. Join her Facebook Group called Support Virginia Wineries During COVID . It’s a place to share information about what wineries are offering, learn about the latest government regulations, and commune with other wine lovers.
One lively discussion asked participants what changes they would like to see when Virginia Wine Country reopens. Their suggestions included longer hours, delivery options, tasting appointments, and satellite tasting stations either inside or outside to avoid crowds at the bar.
Order a Wine Lovers T-Shirt
One local entrepreneur is hoping to lighten the mood around the social distancing with fun, wine-related t-shirts featuring the saying “I’m social distancing. Stay 6 feet away from my bottle of wine!” Order yours through these links at ZebraMountain.com: https://bit.ly/2XKCblj or https://bit.ly/3bkoyNB .
Winery Restrictions
What you cannot do at Virginia wineries at this time is gather inside, get live tastings, or even hang out on the grounds. Some wineries are allowing guests to come inside to pick up their pre-ordered wine packages, but most are requiring no-touch curbside pickup. Don’t just show up and expect to be served; check each winery for operating hours and guidelines.
When restrictions are lifted and wineries open up again, we are bound to see changes in the way they operate. They may need to space picnic tables out around the grounds, limit inside tastings, control crowd sizes, or lobby for changes in operations laws.
“Spreading out seating areas, lots of outdoor seating, and controlling crowd size will be the norm,” predicts Kenny White of Chateau MerrillAnne . “Flights may replace tastings for a while, and [we’ll require] diligent cleaning by staff or all hotspots (doorknobs, tables, counters, etc.). Hopefully, we will be allowed to continue deliveries and curbside pickup as this will keep the inside headcount down. We have to remember that this isn’t over when we reopen, we have to keep people as safe as possible.”
Even though we may see changes throughout the Commonwealth, what won’t change is the commitment our winery owners and winemakers have to creating the highest-quality wines and wine experiences. How can you do your part in helping Virginia’s wine industry? Drink more wine!

6 books about wine to get your obsession started
From the classic Windows on the World to today’s infographic storyteller Wine Folly, there’s a guide for your style.
By Stefanie Gans October 14, 2019
The world of wine is as complex as it is enjoyable. Learn a little bit more about the grape in your glass with these classic and current books.
This post originally appeared in our October 2019 issue ‘s cover story . For more food & drink stories, subscribe to our weekly newsletter .
The industry-approved essential reading for beginners learning about wine, Windows on the World’s 400 pages are a compilation of classes Kevin Zraly taught from the wine school inside the restaurant 107 stories in the sky at the top of the World Trade Center. The book has been updated numerous times since its publication in 1985, and remains the final word on wine. (Sterling Epicure, $28)
Wine doesn’t have to be fussy and precious and intimidating. Sure, there are a lot of grapes and grape-growing regions around the world, but mostly, drinking wine should be about pleasure. Jon Bonné, the former wine editor and critic at San Francisco Chronicle wrote a slim, assured guidebook with rules that are just as funny as they are dead-on (“Not every new-wave wine is cool. Not every classic wine is uncool.”) and just plain helpful (“Don’t save a great bottle for anything more than a rainy day.”). (Ten Speed Press, $15)
Built for the visual age, flush with infographics and bullet points, Wine Folly is a comprehensive guide not just to types of wine, but the entire process from how much water to drink to avoid a headache (a glass of water to match each glass of wine) to winemaking techniques, pairing methodologies and full-page explainers on each grape with illustrations of flavors, scales for body and tannins, growing regions, decanting time and how much money to spend. Besides its use as a teaching tool, Wine Folly is a master class in how good design is just as important as clear writing. (Avery, $35)

To understand wine is to understand history. We make wine from grapes off mature vines that have soaked up the environmental record from the ground. We drink wine from grapes harvested in the past, sometimes decades ago.
Generation to generation, we passed down the wisdom of the vine through the centuries. It is one of mankind’s longest enduring gifts to the future. The wineries of Virginia continue this reverence for the past while propelling the vine into the future.
In ancient times, Romans carried wine while crossing the European continent, leaving behind a rich tradition of viticulture and an appreciation for the grape; the politics of conquerors notwithstanding. Throughout the old world, wine was ubiquitous in nearly every country and community. Consequently, wine accompanied nearly every traveler and explorer seeking to find new routes and new opportunities.
Early Settlers and Virginia Wine
Many think of Napa Valley and California when they think of wine in America. But in reality, Virginia is the birthplace of American wine. Nowhere in history has hope and opportunity been more synonymous than the New World. Early settlers brought that spirit to Virginia in 1607. In 1619, the House of Burgesses, the ruling body in Virginia at the time, declared in Acte 12 that vineyards must be planted . In the modern era, it is difficult to imagine a single crop being so important as to be mandated by legal decree!
In the latter part of the 18 th Century, as America was boiling to the point of revolution, so too was the wine in Virginia. Washington, James Monroe, and Thomas Jefferson, a dedicated oenophile, helped create the Virginia Wine Company consisting of over 2,000 acres dedicated to making wine outside of Charlottesville. A century later, in 1873, a wine-growing cooperative named Monticello Wine Company, continued the wine-growing tradition in Virginia establishing the region as internationally recognized and viticulturally important. Winemaking in Virginia continued unabated until Prohibition ended the harvest in 1916.
Virginia First to Harvest Wine
Fast forward through those dark times to the 1970’s. Thanks to California, America was once again learning the secrets of the grape, to much acclaim. Virginia, the first to harvest the vine in America, was not to be outgrown. New vineyards and wineries began to emerge and by 2005, there were over 100 vineyards in Virginia.
Virginia Wine Popularity Today
The number of wineries in Virginia has increased dramatically. Today, there are nearly 300 wineries and vineyards throughout the state partitioned through recognized vinicultural regions. Due to its mild climate and unique landscape, Virginia grows numerous grapes extremely well, resulting in outstanding and award-winning varietals.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Viognier, Cabernet Franc, and Chardonnay are amongst the most popular, but other varietals can be found easily. More obscure grapes like the Viognier, Petit Verdot, Nebbiolo, and Riesling have found substantial popularity as well.
Early Virginia winemakers did so as part of subsistence farming, but today’s vineyards yield serious crops and the wineries are a substantial tourist draw in Virginia. Although there are several large-scale wine production companies in the state, many rely on visitors and direct-to-consumer purchases. There has been no better time in history to explore Virginia’s wine regions.
While popular culture has recently noted that the Virginia wine revolution has begun, in truth, wine has been in Virginia for over 400 years. We in the modern era are just starting to catch up to that history.
