FIRST RIDE: TREK SESSION 88 DH & FR

The Next Session

Word and photos by Ryan Cleek

Trek introduced their long awaited Session 88 DH and FR bikes at the best little riding area you’ve never heard of, Highland Mountain Bike Park (highlandmountain.com), in Northfield, New Hampshire. Below is a quick run down of the new bikes. Look for more in-depth coverage in our September issue, on newsstands early August.

vtt dh trek session 88

The original Session downhill bike, the ’10’, was a ten-inch-travel beast built around freerider Andre Shandro’s needs for big drop competitions like the Red Bull Rampage. Although the Session 10 was sufficient for the type of riding and contests Shandro was doing, it was a bit off the mark and believed to be too heavy for what ‘traditional’ downhillers and racers were looking for.

vtt dh trek session 88

Trek went through a variety of prototypes and updates to the original Session 10 in pursuit of a lighter, more practical design. However, just weeks before going into production, and after large sums of money were spent in R&D on the a next Session 10, Trek completely scrapped the project after the benefits of there Active Braking Pivot technology (designed to reduce unwanted braking effects on suspension movement) were being realized from their Fuel and Remedy trailbikes. ‘It became very clear that the of ABP suspension was the direction we wanted to for the next long-travel downhill bike, so we stopped what we were working on and completely started over with the Session,’ said Trek’s John Riley.

INSIDE THE 88s The all-new Session 88 DH and FR share the same eight-inch-travel frame and custom-valved Fox DHX 5.0 coil shock, utilizing the Active Braking Pivot (ABP) suspension, Full Floater shock mount and aluminum Evo link.

vtt dh trek session 88

Impressively, the Session 88 DH has a claimed weight of 38 pounds out of the box. The race-ready 88 has a 65-degree head angle, 14.3-inch bottom bracket height, 45-inch wheelbase, 17.3-inch long chain stays, and a 32.6-inch standover height.

vtt dh trek session 88

Session 88 DH Highlights Frame: Alpha Red Series Aluminum, ABP, Full Floater, Evo Link, Tapered head tube, 200mm rear travel Fork: Fox 40 RC2 203mm custom tuned for Trek Shock: Fox DHX 5 coil 8.75 x 2.75, custom tuned for Trek Wheelset:  Bontrager Big Earl Tires: Bontrager Big Earl 2.5′ Shifters: SRAM X.0 Chainguide: MRP G2 Rear derailleur: SRAM X.0 Crankset: Shimano Saint, 83mm bottom bracket, 36T chainring Pedals: Bontrager Big Earl platform Brakes: Avid Elixir, 203mm F rotor, 180mm R rotor S (16.24), M (17.42), L (18.85) Also sold as a frame only.

vtt dh trek session 88

The 88 FR is designed to be more versatile than the race-oriented 88 DH. With component spec choices like the RockShox Totem, the 88 FR is more at home in the bike park where launching jumps and throwing tricks is the modus operandi.

Session 88 FR Highlights Frame: Alpha Red Series Aluminum, ABP, Full Floater, Evo Link, Tapered head tube, 200mm rear travel Fork: RockShox Totem Shock: Fox DHX 5 coil 8.75 x 2.75, custom tuned for Trek Wheelset:  Bontrager Big Earl Tires: Bontrager Big Earl 2.5′ Shifters: Shimano Saint Chainguide: MRP G2 with bashguard Rear derailleur: Shimano Saint Shadow Crankset: Shimano Saint, 83mm bottom bracket Pedals: Bontrager Big Earl platform Brakes: Shimano Saint, 203mm F rotor, 180mm R rotor S (16.24), M (17.42), L (18.85) Also sold as a frame only.

WORTH THE WAIT     The terrain of Highland Mountain Bike Park was perfect for trying out Trek’s new downhill bikes. I rode them as much as I possible could in the two days on the mountain, not enough for a full review, but after dozens of runs I have pretty strong idea of how they’ll perform in the long haul.     The 88 FR can handle the same gnarly terrain as the DH version, and the shorter, quicker steering front-end can really dig into a tight corner or berm.     In my opinion, currently, there are only two out-of-the-box, race-ready, high-performance downhill bikes up to snuff, the Specialized Demo 8 II and the Giant Glory DH. It looks like Trek’s homework has paid off, and the aforementioned brands should be looking over their shoulder, and soon. I know I’m counting the days until our 88 DH test bike arrives.

Additionally, we may utilize precise geolocation data and identification through device scanning.

Privacy Overview

  • Most purposes explained in this notice rely on the storage or accessing of information from your device when you use an app or visit a website. For example, a vendor or publisher might need to store a cookie on your device during your first visit on a website, to be able to recognise your device during your next visits (by accessing this cookie each time).
  • A car manufacturer wants to promote its electric vehicles to environmentally conscious users living in the city after office hours. The advertising is presented on a page with related content (such as an article on climate change actions) after 6:30 p.m. to users whose non-precise location suggests that they are in an urban zone.
  • A large producer of watercolour paints wants to carry out an online advertising campaign for its latest watercolour range, diversifying its audience to reach as many amateur and professional artists as possible and avoiding showing the ad next to mismatched content (for instance, articles about how to paint your house). The number of times that the ad has been presented to you is detected and limited, to avoid presenting it too often.
  • If you read several articles about the best bike accessories to buy, this information could be used to create a profile about your interest in bike accessories. Such a profile may be used or improved later on, on the same or a different website or app to present you with advertising for a particular bike accessory brand. If you also look at a configurator for a vehicle on a luxury car manufacturer website, this information could be combined with your interest in bikes to refine your profile and make an assumption that you are interested in luxury cycling gear.
  • An apparel company wishes to promote its new line of high-end baby clothes. It gets in touch with an agency that has a network of clients with high income customers (such as high-end supermarkets) and asks the agency to create profiles of young parents or couples who can be assumed to be wealthy and to have a new child, so that these can later be used to present advertising within partner apps based on those profiles.
  • An online retailer wants to advertise a limited sale on running shoes. It wants to target advertising to users who previously looked at running shoes on its mobile app. Tracking technologies might be used to recognise that you have previously used the mobile app to consult running shoes, in order to present you with the corresponding advertisement on the app.
  • A profile created for personalised advertising in relation to a person having searched for bike accessories on a website can be used to present the relevant advertisement for bike accessories on a mobile app of another organisation.
  • You read several articles on how to build a treehouse on a social media platform. This information might be added to a profile to mark your interest in content related to outdoors as well as do-it-yourself guides (with the objective of allowing the personalisation of content, so that for example you are presented with more blog posts and articles on treehouses and wood cabins in the future).
  • You have viewed three videos on space exploration across different TV apps. An unrelated news platform with which you have had no contact builds a profile based on that viewing behaviour, marking space exploration as a topic of possible interest for other videos.
  • You read articles on vegetarian food on a social media platform and then use the cooking app of an unrelated company. The profile built about you on the social media platform will be used to present you vegetarian recipes on the welcome screen of the cooking app.
  • You have viewed three videos about rowing across different websites. An unrelated video sharing platform will recommend five other videos on rowing that may be of interest to you when you use your TV app, based on a profile built about you when you visited those different websites to watch online videos.
  • You have clicked on an advertisement about a “black Friday” discount by an online shop on the website of a publisher and purchased a product. Your click will be linked to this purchase. Your interaction and that of other users will be measured to know how many clicks on the ad led to a purchase.
  • You are one of very few to have clicked on an advertisement about an “international appreciation day” discount by an online gift shop within the app of a publisher. The publisher wants to have reports to understand how often a specific ad placement within the app, and notably the “international appreciation day” ad, has been viewed or clicked by you and other users, in order to help the publisher and its partners (such as agencies) optimise ad placements.
  • You have read a blog post about hiking on a mobile app of a publisher and followed a link to a recommended and related post. Your interactions will be recorded as showing that the initial hiking post was useful to you and that it was successful in interesting you in the related post. This will be measured to know whether to produce more posts on hiking in the future and where to place them on the home screen of the mobile app.
  • You were presented a video on fashion trends, but you and several other users stopped watching after 30 seconds. This information is then used to evaluate the right length of future videos on fashion trends.
  • The owner of an online bookstore wants commercial reporting showing the proportion of visitors who consulted and left its site without buying, or consulted and bought the last celebrity autobiography of the month, as well as the average age and the male/female distribution of each category. Data relating to your navigation on its site and to your personal characteristics is then used and combined with other such data to produce these statistics.
  • An advertiser wants to better understand the type of audience interacting with its adverts. It calls upon a research institute to compare the characteristics of users who interacted with the ad with typical attributes of users of similar platforms, across different devices. This comparison reveals to the advertiser that its ad audience is mainly accessing the adverts through mobile devices and is likely in the 45-60 age range.
  • A technology platform working with a social media provider notices a growth in mobile app users, and sees based on their profiles that many of them are connecting through mobile connections. It uses a new technology to deliver ads that are formatted for mobile devices and that are low-bandwidth, to improve their performance.
  • An advertiser is looking for a way to display ads on a new type of consumer device. It collects information regarding the way users interact with this new kind of device to determine whether it can build a new mechanism for displaying advertising on this type of device.
  • A travel magazine has published an article on its website about the new online courses proposed by a language school, to improve travelling experiences abroad. The school’s blog posts are inserted directly at the bottom of the page, and selected on the basis of your non-precise location (for instance, blog posts explaining the course curriculum for different languages than the language of the country you are situated in).
  • A sports news mobile app has started a new section of articles covering the most recent football games. Each article includes videos hosted by a separate streaming platform showcasing the highlights of each match. If you fast-forward a video, this information may be used to select a shorter video to play next.
  • An advertising intermediary delivers ads from various advertisers to its network of partnering websites. It notices a large increase in clicks on ads relating to one advertiser, and uses data regarding the source of the clicks to determine that 80% of the clicks come from bots rather than humans.
  • Clicking on a link in an article might normally send you to another page or part of the article. To achieve this, 1°) your browser sends a request to a server linked to the website, 2°) the server answers back (“here is the article you asked for”), using technical information automatically included in the request sent by your device, to properly display the information / images that are part of the article you asked for. Technically, such exchange of information is necessary to deliver the content that appears on your screen.

Recommend a Bay Area shop to service forks and suspension?

vtt dh trek session 88

  • Add to quote

All this rain, damn, so I might as well service my bike while I am not riding it. I've got about 1000 miles on it, so it's about due for the routine service. It's a 2019 Stumpjumper. Can you recommend a shop (preferably on the Peninsula or in the South Bay) that is good with fork and suspension maintenance? Thanks.

vtt dh trek session 88

Trailhead is the standard answer, but I've had good-and faster-results with Sports Basement in Campbell. Summit Bicycles in San Jose (at the Plant) is also solid.

Interesting - what's the wait/turnover time at SB in Campbell? Last time I went to the Sunnyvale location - they said there was 2 week waitlist for service. That said - i always special order parts etc from SB - they seem to good with that and have multiple suppliers.

vtt dh trek session 88

Fox..... I dropped off in Watsonville and three days later picked up. Installed and waiting for drier trails.......

I have a couple big problems with Summit bikes. One they rip the cable out during a brake cable swap. They didnt take the time to unbolt the plastic holder on a stumpjumper. Unbelievable... Second bike was a 8 month new bike they left a very deep scratch in the top tube about a quarter long. This is clearly from placing the bike on the storage rack, and very carelessly taking the neighboring bike out. Both are not acceptable. First one happened in the los gatos store. Second one happened at their Santa Clara store. First one i was somewhat compensated, second one they said nothing.

vtt dh trek session 88

The unfortunate truth is that it’s luck of the draw with any service related work. Trailhead has a great reputation, but I’ve had and heard of **** results from their service multiple times. Just 2 nights ago, I was looking at my brother in law’s SB6 that had BB play and noise and when i went to remove the pinch bolts on the non drive side XT crank arm, I needed an extension to get enough leverage to break the bolts free. Those are supposed to be torqued to max of 14nm. And the plastic preload screw was cranked as tight as it would go. Trailhead was the shop who installedd the BB and crankset. Sometimes the guy working on your bike simply does not care! I’ve sent my stuff off to PUSH for valve upgrades and re-bushing only to have the fork come back with more play in the Stancions that when they left. I’ve had good luck dealing directly with Fox in Watsonville. To be honest, I don’t let anyone touch my vehicles or bikes unless it’s a warranty issue. Even then, I end up correcting work when I get home. Find a local shop and develop a relationship so when guys work on your bike, they know you and care about your satisfaction.

vtt dh trek session 88

Not in your area but Scotts Valley Cycle Sports has done excellent work for me, usually same day.

I looked for the same convenience and found that Michael at Full Flow Suspension was the best option. He's a small shop in Auburn, a very talented specialist who's great to deal with, excellent communitcation and offers a pretty fast turn around. Shipping from your neighborhood is simple and takes a day or 2 to get to Auburn for cheap, less than your time and gas to drive around I'd bet. I'd rather have a top notch suspension specialist work on my stuff than a local shop. https://www.fullflowsuspension.com

By routine service do you mean cleaning--new oil and seals? If so this is an easy job to do yourself--may want to buy the fox seal press but otherwise no special tools required---fox has a good video Or are you looking for something more>>

vtt dh trek session 88

Go see Ford at Tread. Fast turn arounds and reasonable pricing. Tread Bikes Service Center - Service at Your Finger Tips

$80 for fork or shock service sounds like very good pric.? His posted hours are odd though - no weekend hours - seems a bit tough for us normal M-F 9-5 weekend warriors.

vtt dh trek session 88

+1 for Michael and fullflow Sent from my SM-G930T using Tapatalk

vtt dh trek session 88

I wouldn’t bother going to anyone besides Mike at Full Flow, or sending it back to the manufacturer. Mike does an awesome job, will stand behind his work, and has quick turn around times.

vtt dh trek session 88

Another thumbs up for Mike at FullFlow. Pro work, quick turn around.

Ford at Tread is your best bet for Fox service in the South Bay.

vtt dh trek session 88

Not south bay but Elevation in San Francisco does rebuilds in house. Charlie did wonders with my Dorado.

vtt dh trek session 88

I can heartily endorse Full Flow Suspension

Bike Works in Half Moon Bay. They did a complete fork overhaul on my 2012 Trek Session 88. Took it to N* and felt like it was new. It's a family owned business and I have had them work on my bikes a few times. They know what they are doing and the staff is easy to talk to.

vtt dh trek session 88

had a mixed experience with Full Flow. I know he's a victim of his own success, but the processes and communication haven't kept up. if you need something turned around in a defined period of time, make sure you gain a commitment on this up front and I'd recommend having backup suspension if possible. I've heard Butter has a ticketing system, so will probably use them next time.

Frame Sizing

If you're on the cusp between the recommended height range of two sizes, the absolute best thing is to try to ride them both. At a minimum, check the stack/reach measurements on your current bike and compare it to the new model you are looking at to get an idea of a fit you are already comfortable with. If riding the bike is not an option, consider the following.

The V10 MX is available in sizes small, medium, and large (S-L)

The V10 29" is available in size extra large (XL)

Star Trek: The Exhibit In San Jose

Those Star Trek fans living in the Bay area will be pleased to hear that Star Trek: The Exhibition will arrive there this fall.

On October 23, Star Trek: The Exhibition will open at the Tech Museum in San Jose, California, and run through at least Christmas. The run “could go beyond that if things go well,” said Elizabeth Williams , senior director of marketing at The Tech.

Star Trek: The Exhibition will take up more than fifteen thousand square feet, and will be larger than those seen in other cities, such as Detroit. “Once again, we’ve successfully endeavored to bring our visitors an exhibition that everyone on the planet, and even strange new worlds, can relate to, learn from and enjoy,” said Tech President Peter Freiss . “Housing the exhibition at the Tech Museum is perfectly logical.”

The exhibit will include: an authentic replica of the bridge from the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 (original series,) actual shooting model of a Borg cube, full-motion flight simulator, costumes and props, such as a tricorder, phaser and communicator, from all five Star Trek television shows as well as from the eleven movies, including Star Trek XI.

“Many of the comments they got in Detroit about the show were about why the new film wasn’t part of the exhibit and why it wasn’t part of the historical timeline in the exhibit,” said Elizabeth Williams, explaining that the exhibit has been updated and will include Star Trek XI .

Looks like a Session… or does it? The benchmark of downhill mountain bikes is back with a whole new look—and a whole lot of new speed to go with it. Park runs or World Cup circuit, Session finds the fast on the rowdiest trails with a new high-pivot frame design, 200mm of travel, and the world’s best suspension tech.

  • See the bikes

vtt dh trek session 88

The winningest downhill bike Raking in thirteen World Cup DH gold medals, Session takes the cake as the winningest race bike of 2021. With plenty of gold medals under its belt, it’s no surprise Session earned the title as the fastest downhill ride of the year from both Pinkbike and Global Mountain Bike Network.

All speed, no hangups Session’s high-pivot suspension design The Session features a high-pivot suspension design that results in a rearward axle path, allowing the back wheel to move with the rearward force produced by bumps rather than against it. On the trail, this translates to smoother suspension that doesn’t get hung up on obstacles and instead maintains more forward momentum and provides better grip.

vtt dh trek session 88

Less kickback. More performance. Session’s idler pulley Pedal-kickback is that feeling you get when your crank rotates backward as your suspension compresses. It’s the result of tension caused by chain growth—when the rearward axle path increases the distance between your cogs and front chainring. To keep you rolling smoothly on even the rowdiest lines, the new Session is equipped with an idler pulley that routes the top section of the chain closer to the high-pivot and virtually eliminates chain growth and all of its negative effects.

Tune for your trail

Session now features a Mino Link suspension adjustment so you can tune your ride for your kind of session. Choose a firmer 25% progression for race day or the plusher 20% progression for park days.

New reach-based sizing

The new Session has a sizing strategy based on reach rather than seat tube length, which lets you choose the size that best fits your riding style. Size up for more stability at speed, size down for more maneuverability.

Size-specific chainstays

Ride balanced, whatever your frame size. Session’s chainstays grow to match the frame’s size, ensuring you get the right weight distribution for control on your biggest lines.

Run it mullet!

Every Session comes stocked for speed with 29er wheels, but the frame accommodates 27.5˝ wheels and party-in-the-back riders can run 29er up-front only.

Hitch without worry

Full-coverage armor helps prevent down tube damage from trail debris and makes for worry-free shuttling on tailgates and chair lifts.

Route it your way

Run your cables in whatever custom variation you prefer, externally for easy replacement or internally to prevent snags and hang-ups.

Additional trail bike options

Slash is a long-travel trail bike that looks like a monster truck and rides like a magic carpet. It’s built for big all-mountain terrain, racing the clock on rugged enduro lines, and having a rip-roaring good time in the rough.

Remedy is a hard-charging trail bike with 27.5˝ wheels, a 160mm fork and 150mm of rear travel, and all the stoke-worthy features that make it perfect for hitting jumps, roosting corners, and throwing down on the trail.
