Warburtons extends its School Visitor programme
By Alice Cooke 2016-03-17T00:00:00+00:00
There is now a team of 21 people nationwide, who deliver the company’s food education programme.
Zoe Court is the latest addition to the baker’s Basingstoke site in Hampshire.
Warburtons’ School Visitors Programme delivers food education for schoolchildren aged 7-11 countrywide. In the last academic year the project engaged 28,779 children, and taught them the importance of a balanced diet, as well as about hygiene and safety, food waste and basic food preparation.
Selena Morris, a school visitor for the company, who works at its Enfield site said: “I am delighted to have joined the team to deliver such a worthy project. The children that we work with have not always had the best start in life, and do not necessarily eat fresh food on a daily basis.
“It is great to see them wanting to interact and engage in healthy eating. The Warburtons School Visitors programme gives children a chance to educate themselves at a crucial stage of life about the importance of healthy eating, by giving them the right tools and information to make informed decisions about their health and wellbeing.”

Warburton's school farm visits to reach over 600 pupils
Primary school pupils have experienced hands-on learning highlighting the importance of wheat and food production during a visit to a Gloucestershire farm.
Children from local school Aylburton CofE Primary enjoyed the farm visit at Pardon Hill farm in Cheltenham.
They discovered where their food comes from as well as discover the importance of wheat and the countryside.
During the visit, the Key Stage 2 pupils had the opportunity to explore the working farm – some of them for the first time.
They learned about the cycle of wheat and explored the importance of soil, water and wildlife through activities such as milling wheat and a mini-beast hunt, all designed to teach children about the natural environment around them.
Warburtons devised the project, supported by educational charity, the Country Trust and Openfield, to educate children about the vital role the countryside plays in providing the key ingredients required to create healthy staple foods.
Brett Warburton, Executive Director at Warburtons and Jill Attenborough, CEO at the Country Trust attended the farm visit to engage with the children and help support the programme.
This provided the children with the opportunity to talk to a member of the Warburton family to discover why wheat is so vital to their business.
Farming education
In 2017, 438 school children aged 7-11 took part in the programme. During the visits, farmers taught the children about wheat and the role of the farmer, to help inspire young people to appreciate the countryside and the people it supports.
This year, the programme has been expanded to more school across the UK, to provide more children with the opportunity to explore the journey food takes from farm to fork.
Brett Warburton explained that this year's Farm Visits programme will reach over 600 pupils.
“It is lovely to see children so interested in nature, and this programme can help children across Britain to learn about the importance of our countryside, as well as explore exactly where their food comes from,” Mr Warburton said.
“Our partnership is important to raise awareness of where our main ingredient comes from and how we work with our farmers. We hope that this programme will help children to enjoy and care for nature and protect the future of our countryside and the farming industry.”
The school visit follows news released last year that shows there are some serious misconceptions children have about food.
According to research by the British Nutrition Foundation (BNF), which spoke to more than 27,500 children across the UK, cheese comes from plants, tomatoes grow underground and fish fingers are made of chicken.
In 2015, a survey showed that more than four in five primary age school children said they would visit a farm to find out more about where their food comes from.

Warburtons: Best Thing Since…
by Liz Jones published for EDUcatering Magazine
The School Visitors programme at Warburton’s is nothing new. In fact, the bakery giant has been running it for the past 20 years. So how come it’s just won an award now?
“As a family firm, we’ve always been aware of our role in society and the importance of giving back,” explains Mike McDermott, corporate sustainability manager. “In fact, Jonathan Warburton’s sister, Jill Kippax, started the initiative 20 years ago.”
However, in the past three years it’s taken on a new lease of life, been developed and is now a national programme, with the accompanying national exposure.
“It actually sits under our community investment umbrella programme, Families Matter, and makes up just one element.”
School Visitors is special because it entails 22 Warburton full-time employees who’s role is to solely go out to schools and teach children about bread, how to bake and the value good nutrition.
In the past, the team has been made up of former bakers but more recently the role attracts people from an educational or nutritional background.
Since 2012, McDermott has driven a consistent approach to the programme within the business, ensuring it’s curriculum relevant, too.
The starting point for the new drive was partnering with the British Nutrition Foundation “We needed to ensure that it was a robust programme,” explains McDermott.
The core of the programme is practical sessions. These depend on the facilities available at the schools. Some will host baking sessions; others will run sandwich- making sessions. “It’s all based on food skills, ingredients, the Living Well plate as well as topical issues like food waste and healthy eating,” he says.
The workshops last two hours and are aimed at 5-11-year-olds with 7-11-year-olds, a specific target group as this is the age that healthy eating habits are more likely to be embedded, says McDermott.
The school visits are based around Warburton’s sites, reaching as far north as Glasgow and as far south as Newton Abbot in Devon. There are 12 bakeries nationwide and several large depots, too. Last year the company ran 1,000 sessions and on average visit between 500-600 schools a year. That’s a reach in 2015 of 28,000 pupils…
“Our golden rules,” says Mike, “are that we do try and prioritise areas that are more socially deprived and we also don’t travel more than one hour from our sites.”
Warburton’s measures the success of the programme by independent validation by the BNF who visit schools to assess the quality of the visit. McDermott is heartened by top line figures such as 98% of teachers believing the sessions improved the children’s knowledge about healthy foods and 100% of teachers recommending the experience (and 100% wanting a revisit!).
Warburton’s invests £400,000 a year into the initiative and around 36,000 hours.
So where does it go from here? Given its geographic restrictions and the fact that Warburton’s cannot visit every school, McDermott is now developing the workshop online. At the Warburton’s website you can now access workbooks, teaching materials and posters – all free of charge and all free from branding. The webpage provides lessons plans for a sandwich and bread-making session and other resources such as PowerPoints, worksheets and videos to teach about healthy eating, getting ready to cook and where food comes from.
Judges at the National CSR Awards lauded Warburton’s vision , commitment and drive to standardise and grow the School Visitor programme that has enabled it to become a rigorous, consistently delivered and educationally-sound programme.
As a fifth generation family business, it is actively demonstrating how important families are and how committed it is to helping them thrive by making a positive difference in its communities. It really is living up to its community investment philosophy: “Families Matter”.

Warburtons celebrates one millionth donation at Bolton school

Children in Bolton were joined by Warburtons chairman Jonathan Warburton, as he donated and celebrated the bakery's one millionth product to community groups this year.
The initiative for the donations was made through the Warburtons Foundation. The foundation aims to support families across the UK through community hubs including schools and food banks. The family run business has been passionate about supporting charities since 1876, setting itself the donation target of 1.25 million products already for next year.
Within the past year, the company has made 149,835 donations across Scotland from its Bellshill Bakery – a large portion of the total one million community product donations. The Warburtons donations are organised by the local ‘Community Champions’ at the Bellshill Bakery.

The millionth product was donated to Church Road Primary School, a stone’s throw from the baker’s flagship bakery in Bolton. To mark the moment, chairman and fifth-generation Warburton, Jonathan, paid visit to the school to help celebrate the occasion and handle the delivery of products including crumpets and toastie loaf for pupils.
Deborah Docherty, headteacher at Church Road Primary School, said: “It’s extremely important for us that children attending school aren’t hungry and the donations we receive from The Warburtons Foundation help us provide our pupils with the best start to the day. The donation today will not only support our children in school but provide them with something to take home as we know that there are many families for whom a loaf of bread is a great help right now.”
Jonathan Warburton, CEO of Warburtons, commented: “Our family business has been supporting local communities since we began and it remains incredibly important to us to this day. I am really pleased we reached our commitment to donating one million products this year, it’s been a delight to visit Church Road Primary School today to meet some of the children our donations go towards supporting.
“Things are difficult for so many families at the moment and we recognise how vital it is that we continue to listen and act so that we can help play our part in supporting families across the country as best we can. We look forward to helping out the community in the years to come and meet our next target of 1.25 million donations in the next 12 months.”

Fresh Ideas and Inspiration for education
10 fantastic free school trips and visits.
In need of some ideas for free school trips? In the present climate, teachers are tending to organise fewer trips and visits for their classes than in years gone by. This may be for several reasons, firstly the cost - budgets are tight and each pound spent has to be seen to be worthwhile and secondly, they are time-consuming - they need to be carefully planned, have to be linked to learning and objectives (not simply to have a nice time – heaven forbid!) and must be assessed for every possible risk.
english heritage
English heritage free school visit, free school trips, pizza express school visit, rnli school visit, rspb school visit, school trips, tesco - eat happy project, tesco farm to fork, warburtons school visit.
Despite all this, if teachers can manage to arrange school trips, they are still incredibly worthwhile because getting children out of the classroom can provide so many benefits, not least in social and emotional development and increasing confidence.
Here is our selection (in no particular order) of some of the best free experiences for your consideration.
1. veolia – waste management and recycling.
Offering free downloads, lesson plans and worksheets, Veolia also offer school and club visits for educational purposes. Specific Veolia locations offer free school tours at their facilities . We have been lucky enough to go to one of these and it is truly fascinating. KS1 packs are available here .
2. Pizza Express
Pizza Express have been running free school visits since 1999 and have it down to a fine art! Children get the opportunity to visit the kitchen, learn about food hygiene, find out about the fresh ingredients, knead their own dough and make their own individual pizzas which are cooked and can be taken back to school for lunch! How brilliant and all free of charge! Booking can be made via the website .
The RSPB have teamed up with Aldi to offer ‘trained educators’ who will come to your school and work with you in your school grounds, not just learning about birds, but about wildlife in general. The 90 minute sessions are entitled: Giving Nature a Home, Bioblitz and Big Schools Birdwatch and are currently offered in 17 cities around the UK. There is more information as well as free resources on the website.
4. Warburtons
Warburtons offer schools visits for 5-11 year olds to learn about bread making, food and healthy eating. The sessions are practical and informative and 99% of teachers would book a second visit or recommend the experience. The school visitor programme has been running for 20 years and has reached almost 30 000 children. Find out more here .
5. English Heritage
English Heritage offer free visits to over 400 of their sites for self-led groups. 6. The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (WWT)
The Trust offers free admission and optional learning session to eligible schools until December 2017. Eligibility is for state-funded schools where a high proportion of children on roll are eligible for free school meals. There are excellent reviews from teachers endorsing the experience. Find out more here .
7. RNLI (Royal National lifeboat Institution)
Free visits available to locations of your choice all over the country, or an RNLI volunteer will come to see you in your school or setting. The outreach team aims to teach and inspire children, not only about the rescue work of the lifeboat crews and lifeguards, but also about water safety in general. There is a large selection of resources, including lesson plans, videos, and activity sheets, available for children and young people from ages 3 – 18. Find out more here .
8. Local libraries
Local libraries are great places to visit. You would be surprised by how many children have never been to a library. Local libraries often have temporary exhibitions or free events on. You could walk to the library with extra support from parent helpers for the walk. Children could be encouraged to bring their library card if they have one and choose a book.
9. Local Nature Walk
A nature walk can be such a lovely experience with your class. Often parents will help too. Depending on the time of year and place that you can walk to, children can collect rubbings, leaves, conkers, blackberries. They could be issued with a ‘What to spot’ list to tick off as they go. What can they identify? Go on a bug hunt or try to identify sounds heard on the walk.
10. Fire Station visits
Some local fire stations will accommodate small groups for tours of the station. They will also run community fire safety workshops.

Following the success of the award winning School Visitors programme from Warburtons, the nation’s biggest baker launches free Teaching Resources for primary schools, designed to help children learn about food in the face of a ‘dietary crisis’
It has been claimed that the nation will face severe social and economic issues if Britain fails to teach children about how to cook and eat properly.
The NHS spends over £6bn each year on diet-related illnesses and there is concern that the figure could rise significantly as a result of poor knowledge around healthy eating.
With growing levels of eating disorders and reports suggesting that more children than ever are failing to eat fruit and vegetables, there is a renewed focus on food education.
According to studies, early intervention is more successful in influencing diets into adulthood, and last year the teaching of cooking became compulsory for children up to age 14 in the English National Curriculum.
However, as it was introduced, research from Warburtons showed that more than half of teachers did not think they would have enough time to prepare for cooking in the classroom.

What are the Warburtons Teaching Resources?
The Teaching Resources are free, downloadable materials, compiled to support the teaching of healthy eating and cooking.
They offer a step-by-step guide for teachers when delivering food education lessons, and include worksheets, PowerPoint presentations, videos and posters.
Designed in accordance with the UK healthy eating model, The eatwell plate, the resources outline food lessons for sandwich making and bread baking, as well as information required on how to prepare a classroom, ingredients, equipment and pupils.
The British Nutrition Foundation (BNF) collaborated with Warburtons in the development of the materials, which were based on nine months of new research into who can be helped - and how.
FREE RESOURCES - Warburtons’ free Teaching resources can be downloaded at http://www.warburtons.co.uk/corporate/teaching-resources/
Why is Warburtons offering these resources?
For 20 years, Warburtons has been delivering workshops to primary schools as part of its award winning School Visitors programme to try and combat these issues.
The scheme boasts a full-time team of 20 School Visitors who delivered over 1,000 workshops to almost 30,000 children across more than 600 schools last year.
In response to the increasing demand for these visits and the incredibly positive feedback from teachers, Warburtons has provided a selection of the workshop resources online to enable even more schools to benefit from the content.
This latest initiative builds on Warburtons’ belief that a responsible family food business should make a positive contribution to families’ diets and nutritional education.
The School Visitors initiative is part of Warburtons’ national investment programme Families Matter, which supports the local communities in which Warburtons operates.
Brett Warburton, Executive Director at Warburtons:
“Our School Visitors Programme gives Warburtons a unique insight into food teaching. The new online Teaching Resources are designed to help children develop the right eating habits which will stay for them for years to come and provide the foundation for a healthy life.”
The Warburtons Teaching Resources
The new Teaching Resources include four sections:
What is healthy eating? Helping children understand about healthy eating with the UK healthy eating model – The eatwell plate
How can you cook in a primary school classroom? Finding out how to prepare your classroom, ingredients, equipment, pupils and yourself
Sandwich making project. Showing pupils how to prepare ingredients and use them to make their own healthy sandwich.
Bread making project. Teaching all about the ingredients in bread and how it is made as your class create their own bread rolls.

Thanks to Warburtons' National School Visitor Programme that has been running for more than 20 years. We thoroughly enjoyed an exciting workshop today! Sue, the bread-making expert, shared her knowledge of bread making, food and healthy eating. This practical, informative learning experience taught the importance of a balanced diet, hygiene and safety, food waste and basic food preparation in an enjoyable and creative way.
We made the most delicious sandwiches and had so many fillings to choose from. I really hope all the children enjoyed their sandwich when they get home. Happy eating!

Wonderful Warburtons Visit
March 7, 2017 by Mrs MacNeil | 1 Comment
Primary 5/4 were so lucky to have a visit from Warburtons the bread makers on Monday 20th February. Two ladies from their education department came into our class to talk to us about the history of the company, to help us learn about a healthy and balanced meal, how to wash your hands correctly when handling food and the final activity was the creation of a healthy sandwich on their healthy wholemeal bread. They all had to wear hairnets just like the employees in Warburtons do when they work in the factory to keep hair away from food and all jewellery had to be removed too. The children even got the chance to eat their creations and if they ate their full sandwich they were given their own wholemeal loaf to take home. A special certificate was awarded to all the children who took part too. We had an amazing time and wanted to share some of the pictures taken on the day.

Warburtons Visit
Date: 15th Nov 2018 @ 12:10pm
Year 3 have had an amazing morning with a special visitor from Warburtons. They learnt all about food safety, hygiene and nutrition. It linked in perfectly with our Science topic (animals and humans), PSHE (healthy eating) and DT (making sandwiches).
The children all agreed that eating their own sandwiches was their favourite part of the session.
Thank you again Warburtons!

NFL Draft Prospect Cooper DeJean Shows Off Impressive Hops in High School Basketball Highlights
The former Iowa cornerback is an excellent athlete, as evidenced by his ability to dunk over anybody.
- Author: Liam McKeone
Iowa Hawkeyes cornerback Cooper DeJean is projected to be a first round pick during Thursday's NFL draft , and for good reason. He was tremendous as a senior last fall, recording 41 tackles and five passes defended to go along with two interceptions. In a draft class overflowing with offensive talent DeJean is seen as one of the few defenders worthy of a selection in the first round.
Football fans know the draft is ultimately a bit of a crapshoot and it's anybody's guess if DeJean will succeed at the next level. But he definitively checks one box that is often a good indicator of future NFL success— an electric high school basketball mixtape.
Check out the highlights from DeJean's days as point guard at Battle Creek-Ida Grove High School in Iowa. The man can jump .
Iowa CB Cooper DeJean is going to be one of the first DB’s taken tomorrow in the NFL Draft. But his high school basketball highlights are CRAZY 🤯🔥 (via: @CourtsideFilms ) pic.twitter.com/M8i9X2sfdo — Complex Sports (@ComplexSports) April 24, 2024
Not every professional football player played basketball in high school. But the ones that did, like former No. 1 pick Myles Garrett, always have a highlight reel exhibiting just how far out of everyone else's league they are in terms of sheer athleticism. It's a good sign for DeJean that his mixtape looks like that because, to play in the NFL, absolutely elite athleticism is a prerequisite.
It's a good sign for DeJean that his mixtape looks the same because, to play in the NFL, absolutely elite athleticism is a prerequisite. Does this video prove he's that sort of athlete? No. But it is a strong piece of evidence pointing to that conclusion. In the more concrete realm, DeJean ran a 4.42 40-yard dash at his Pro Day. He's no doubt a great athlete.
DeJean should hear his name called on Thursday night. Whichever team calls him up to the podium will be getting, at the very least, an elite pick-up basketball teammate.
