49 Countries you can visit with a Bangladeshi passport
- October 15, 2019
If you’re reading this, you’re probably a fellow Bangladeshi trying to figure out what countries you can visit without the hassles of having to obtain a Visa through an embassy/travel agency. I have found the Wikipedia page and other resources on this topic to be unreliable, often containing info that is either false or not well-referenced. If you were hoping to travel visa-free to Bolivia because of such sources, this suggest you’re in for bad news.
The GOOD NEWS is..
- I’ve been actively figuring this puzzle out myself for the last 8 years while sporadically traveling through 4 continents
- I’ve put together my notes in an attempt to create a more reliable and transparent resource (with verifiable references) that will hopefully make life easier for fellow Bangladeshis with the travel bug
In this post, I will first list all countries where you can get either a Visa on-arrival or an Electronic-visa yourself without having to deal with third parties. Next, I will list countries and territories that you can visit with a valid US, Canada or Schengen Visa (more on this later). Finally, I will include suggestions for visiting some of the places that I have had the chance to see over the years, and pitch in some trip-planning advice which I hope will be helpful.
Disclaimers:
- For a few countries, I didn’t entirely trust the sources I referenced, and I marked them with a double asterisk “**” next to their names. I strongly recommend doing extra research for these and using your best judgement.
- All countries will require you to have necessary documents/funds to prove your travel intentions, arranged accommodation and financial ability to sustain yourself during your travels. What exactly is required varies from country to country, but will be stated on the embassy websites. If you need clarifications on requirements, I suggest directly contacting the respective embassies. Please don’t show up to a foreign country without a return ticket, or without “ sufficient” travel funds, because you will probably get rejected at the entry-point . Or you won’t be even allowed to board your flight in the first place. This post is meant to serve as a solid starting point of research for your travel plans. But you will have to do the final work đ
- Visa policies can change over time . While I will try to keep this document as up-to-date as possible, a little lag-time for updates is expected. Please ensure you follow the links I am sharing to double-check the sources and make sure nothing has changed. The sources I linked are the best that I could find. If you find better ones, please share them in the comments and I will make the necessary edits to this post.
- While I have done thorough research to put this together, this may not be a comprehensive list . If you have been to a country without a visa with a regular Bangladeshi passport and you don’t see it on the list, please let me know, and if possible, please leave a link to sources verifying your correction.
Now for the fun part. Here are the lists!

Countries you can visit with Electronic /Online Visas (prior application required)
For questions regarding E-VISA(s) and to check what you need for different countries and if you want a professional third party to verify the information, I have found the Ivisa website (affiliate link) to be a helpful resource. Countries/territories you can visit with a valid US/Canada/Schengen/EU nation Visa
A little-known secret to international travel as a Bangladeshi is that a lot of the countries that usually require us to obtain a visa through their embassy loosen that restriction if we have a valid Visa from another developed country. I have personally made the most out of this caveat over the years, and have visited around a dozen countries outside the US and the Schengen zone using multiple-entry US and Schengen Visas. Next, I will enlist what countries you can visit via this approach and what visas you need to be able to visit them. Pay special attention to what countries require a valid multiple-entry Schengen visa as opposed to a Single-Entry one.
- Mexico- valid Canada, Japan, the USA, the UK or Schengen visa
- Costa Rica- permanent residence , a student visa, a work visa in the USA , Canada, and members of the EU
- Panama- valid Visa or Residence issued by Canada, USA , Australia, the Republic of Korea, Japan, the UK , Republic of Singapore and any EU state
- Belize- READ THIS : While it seems that you can enter Belize with a valid multiple-entry US, Canada or Schengen visa , there are potentially major hidden costs involved. These sources [1] [2] suggest that Bangladeshis have to pay $250 USD ($500 BZD) for a single entry visa and an additional $600 USD ($ 1200 BZD) in “Repatriation fees” at the point of entry. When I called the consulate in Los Angeles, the lady who answered said these fees have been removed. However, I was never able to get any confirmation in writing or email, and further research into the laws didn’t return any favorable results. Which is why I still haven’t visited Belize.
- Dominican Republic- Any person who can legally travel or reside in the USA , Canada and the EU
- Aruba- valid multiple-entry Schengen visa
- Sint Marteen- valid multiple-entry Schengen visa
- Antigua and Barbuda- valid US/Canadian/EU/Schengen/UK Visa or UK Indefinite Leave to Remain
- United Kingdom- This one may be a little surprising, but you are allowed a 24 hour transit in the UK without a UK visa if (among other requirements) youâre travelling to (or on part of a reasonable journey to) Australia, Canada, New Zealand or the USA and have a valid visa for that country . Please check the other requirements.
- Albania- valid, multiple-entry Schengen, US or UK visa, which has been previously used in the respective country of issuance
- Bosnia and Herzegovina- valid multiple-entry visa or residence permit issued by the Schengen Agreement country, EU Member States or USA
- Montenegro- valid visa from Schengen area, USA, UK, Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland, or a permission to stay in these countries
- Serbia- valid Schengen, UK or US visa, and for holders of foreign passports having residence permit in the countries of the Schengen area, EU or USA
- Kosovo- valid multiple -entry Schengen visa
- Macedonia- valid British, Canadian, USA or multiple-entry Schengen visa
- Croatia- valid multiple-entry Schengen documents/national visas and residence permits of Bulgaria/Cyprus/ Romania
- Romania- valid multiple-entry Schengen documents
- Bulgaria- valid multiple-entry Schengen visa
- Cyprus- valid multiple-entry Bulgarian, Croatian, Romanian or Schengen Visa
- Georgia- valid visa from USA, UK, Australia, Schengen area or a long list of nations (see list here)
- Turkey- valid Schengen/USA/UK/ Ireland visa or residence permit may let you get single entry e-Visas valid for one month via the website www.evisa.gov.tr
- Qatar- valid residence permit or visit visa to either Schengen countries, Australia, Canada, UK, USA or New Zealand, can obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) free of
- Madagascar- applicants residing in the U.S.A, regardless of the nationality
- SÃŖo TomÊ and PrÃncipe- US, Canada or Schengen visa charge* by completing an online application prior to travelling
- Malaysia- 120 hour transit without visa available for those traveling to and from these 7 countries with the appropriate visa(s) ( see full list of eligibility criteria )
- Turkey- valid UK, US, Schengen or Ireland visa
Territories
- Bermuda (British Territory)- multiple entry Canada/USA visa
- British Virgin Islands (British Territory)- valid UK, USA or Canada visa
- Turks and Caicos (British Territory)- valid UK, USA or Canada visa
China’s 24-hour Visa-free transit rule (visa free country #49)
This one didn’t really fit anywhere else so putting it in its own section. Bangladeshi travelers transiting through China to reach another country of destination may be eligible for a 24 hour Transit Visa Exemption. This visa exemption is available to all foreigners, and most ports of entry in China . I didn’t even know about this rule till I ended up in China for a long layover in 2016, and wandered out of the airport in Kunming dumbfounded by how I went past Chinese immigration without a Visa. For my next 2 layovers in China, I planned in advance. I hired a tour-guide to show me around the island of Xiamen the first time, and ventured out to go solo-exploring during the second one.
Trip-planning advice
We are done with listing places you can visit . In this section, I will offer some insights into planning your trips, and suggest a few travel itineraries based on my own travel experiences that I think others can learn from from.
Finding cheap flights
It took me a while to nail this down the exact methodology that I use now to find the cheapest flights. I use a combination of Google flights and Skyscanner . Google flights is the best website/app (in my humble opinion) for figuring out where you can fly for cheap when you have open-ended travel plans. The map/explore feature which allows you to look at flight prices to anywhere after picking a departure point is amazing. Google also tells you if the flight prices to a location at the moment are cheap/expensive relative to how much they usually cost.
Now, for the second part. Once you have a rough idea of where you want to go based on flight prices, I recommend switching to Skyscanner and checking the deals for flights there on the same dates. Usually, the flights on Skyscanner are cheaper than Google Flights for some reason. But Skyscanner’s open-ended map exploration feature doesn’t work as well as Google’s does, which is why I recommend switching to this once you have narrowed down your destination.
But what if my plans are not open-ended and there is a specific place I want to go?
No worries! These apps should have you covered as well. With both apps, you can choose to get notified when flight prices to your dream destinations change. I use this feature all the time , and have utilized unbelievable deals such as $140 Round-trip from Los Angeles-Panama City and $185 one-way flight from Sweden to Los Angeles.
Suggested Trip 1 (traveling from Bangladesh): Indonesia
Note: Indonesia used to offer both on-arrival and e-visas to Bangldeshis but both are currently on hold since Covid started. Hopefully this is temporary, and will be sorted soon đ
Indonesia is hands down one of my two favorite countries to visit along with Mexico. I had the chance to spend 2 weeks traveling around it in 2017. After visiting Flores and going from Bali to Jakarta by road, I still left the country feeling I had only scratched the surface of the paradise with its 14,000+ islands and multiple biospheres. Not only can you visit Indonesia for a month with a free on-arrival visa (you can pay for a 2 month on-arrival visa), you can also travel around most of the country on a tight budget of $30/day if you are backpacking like me. The cheapest accommodation I used was a $6/night hostel in Jogjakarta. I found Indonesia to be much cheaper than Thailand, which is where most Bangladeshi tourists seem to flock to. I found most of Indonesia outside of Bali to be cheaper as well.
Here are 3 things to do on your next trip to Indonesia :
- Go Volcano hiking in Eastern Java . Hiking up both Mount Bromo and Mount Ijen are breathtaking experiences (metaphorically more so than literally đ )
- Go to the Sumatran jungle and see some wildlife . Orangutans are one of the main reasons I am planning on returning to Indonesia next year.
- Go to Flores and enjoy the tranquil views at Labuan Bajo and see the sun set by hundreds of little islands (a video preview with travel tips at the end for those interested)
Suggested Trip 2 (for US/Canada residents): Mexico
A lot of people studying/working in the US and Canada are not aware that having a valid multiple-entry visa to either country allows you unlimited travel into several countries in Central America. Mexico arguably has the most to offer out of all of them. Even I wasn’t aware of this exemption during my first 4 years in the US, but since then, I have done around a dozen trips to Mexico and have no plans of stopping. From surf-waves on the western end of Baja California, to Aztec ruins buried under Mexico City, to Mayan Pyramids and underground swim-holes in Yucatan, Mexico has no shortage of amazing experiences. Not to forget, the street-side food is one of the best I have ever tasted in my life (and very accommodating for those of us used to a Bangladeshi diet). I usually eat chicken tacos 3 times a day when in Mexico. And on top of it all, it’s filthy cheap ! Budget travel costs in Mexico are estimated to range roughly around $25-40 a day. Here’s my first vlog that I made 3 years ago during a 3-day trip to Mexico, and everything you see me doing in this video (including entrance fees) cost less than $40 combined .
My recommendations for 3 things to do in Mexico :
- Go see the pyramids of Teotihuacan near Mexico city. They are bigger and much older than the Mayan ones in Yucatan, and I thought they were cooler than Chichen Itza. If you can afford it, I highly recommend going on a sunrise hot-air balloon ride over them . Here’s a short video I made from when I had the chance to do it.
- Go swim in the Cenotes of Yucatan. Under-ground swimming caves with crystal-clear pools are just as cool as they sound. Skip to 2:20 of this video for a glimpse.
- Go swimming with a sea-lion colony in Baja California . You can play with wild sea-lion pups in the water next to an island. I have a video on that somewhere on my YouTube channel too, but I will stop spamming you with self-promotion here.
* I am aware that most Dhakaias (myself included) probably never learned to swim growing up. But I promise there’s a lot more to Mexico than just the swimming activities I mentioned
Suggested Trip 3 (for holders of Schengen Visa/documents): The Balkans
I have spent more than a year traveling all across Europe (more on that in this article if interested), and some of my best experiences were in the Balkans (Slovenia, Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia, North Macedonia and Albania). As long as you avoid the coastal towns where cruise ships come in, the prices are cheaper than almost all of Europe, and significantly cheaper than Western Europe. I have friends that were camping out during the summer, and getting by while spending less than 15 euros/day. My favorite part is that the beautiful locations (apart from the aforementioned coastal hot-spots) are far from being crowded with tourists, and are very serene. Relative to Western Europe, the Balkans attract more chill travelers who like to take things easy, and I have formed incredible friendships with other solo-travelers during my 2 months in the Balkans. There are a lot of historical spots as well throughout the Balkans, where major region-defining events unfolded up until the late 90s. Any talk about the Balkans would be incomplete without mentioning how good their food (read Burek) is. A very filling burger/pljeskavica in Serbia will cost around l-2 Euros if you get it at the right spot, and Albania and Bosnia-Herzegovina is even cheaper. If you have dietary restrictions, do note that the food isn’t usually vegan-friendly.
Recommendations on 3 things to do in the Balkans :
- Take a free walking tour on the Bosnian civil war in Sarajevo . This was one of the more moving places I have been to. My tour-guide was another young man who had lived through the violence of the civil war himself as the city was under siege
- Go see the medieval coastal towns of Croatia and Montenegro . For all you Game of Thrones fans, Dubrovnik is where they filmed all scenes from King’s Landing.
- Go to Slovenia. It’s the most underrated country in Europe in my opinion, with amazing views, amazing architecture and amazing people. I became fascinated with it after the first time I went there. After returning home to Los Angeles, I got together with a Slovenian friend to make a 50-minute instructional video of how to visit Slovenia , and of course, went back this summer.
* I realize that the Balkans technically include Greece, Bulgaria and Romania (may be the last one’s debatable), but I am choosing to focus on former Yugoslavia countries and Albania. I should add that Romania is pretty amazing too.

Visa-Free Countries for Bangladesh Citizens
Traveling with a bangladeshi passport.
Bangladeshi passport holders have limited travel mobility since they have visa-free access to a relatively small number of countries compared to other countries’ passport holders. According to Henley & Partners, at the beginning of 2023, the Bangladeshi passport has 102nd place in the global passport ranking in terms of travel freedom.
Currently, the Bangladesh visa-free countries list includes 16 destinations. To travel to many other countries, Bangladeshi passport holders need to obtain an electronic visa, a visa on arrival, or a regular visa.
The requirements and process for obtaining a visa can vary from country to country, so it’s essential to research the specific visa requirements for your intended destination before making travel plans.
The Bangladeshi passport application process
The Government of Bangladesh issues a Bangladesh passport only to its citizens for the purpose of international travel. The application process includes the following steps:
- Apply online for a Bangladeshi passport and print out the application once submitted.
- Have the printed copy attested by an authorized official.
- Cover the passport fees.
- Please book an appointment with the High Commission for biometric data entry (fingerprint, signature, and photograph).
- Appear for data entry and submit the required documents.
- Wait for your passport to be processed.
- On receiving a notification, collect a Bangladesh passport in person or by mail.
Countries that Bangladeshi passport holders can visit visa-free
Certain destinations allow Bangladeshi citizens to travel without a visa. To enter most visa-free countries, you only need a passport. However, some of these countries may have restrictions, such as requiring proof of onward travel, a certain amount of funds, or a letter of invitation.

The benefits of visiting visa-free countries with the Bangladeshi passport
Visa-free destinations enable Bangladeshi travelers to appreciate the benefits of visa-free travel:
- when you travel without a visa, you can be more flexible about your itinerary and change your plans at any moment;
- it’s a great way to save money since you don’t have to pay visa fees;
- you don’t experience any visa hassle;
- without stressful restrictions, you may enjoy your stay in visa-free countries more than in places that require a visa.
Countries offering eVisa to the Bangladeshi citizens
To travel to non-visa-free countries, Bangladeshi passport holders must have a valid visa. A number of governments implemented a simplified method – an online visa. It is an official document that allows entering the country for tourist purposes.
The application for an online visa can be completed within several minutes: it is necessary to fill out a form by entering the required information, covering the fees, and checking the email address.
An electronic visa can be obtained in such countries:
Countries offering visas on arrival to Bangladeshi passport holders
A visa on arrival is another option for Bangladeshi passport holders to get a visa in a facilitated way. This means that you can receive a visa when you arrive at the entry point, rather than applying for one in advance at an embassy or consulate.
You will need to have a valid Bangladeshi passport, a passport-sized photo, and the appropriate fee in cash. You may also be asked to fill out a visa application form and provide proof of onward travel. The process typically takes time and involves waiting in queues, so an electronic visa is still easier to apply for.
A visa on arrival is obtainable in the following destinations:
Countries where Bangladeshi citizens need to get a visa to travel to
A traditional visa is one that requires an in-person visit to the consulate or embassy. You should make an appointment at the office, collect the proper documentation, and visit the visa interview.
Holding a regular/traditional visa is the only way for Bangladeshi passport holders to visit the rest of the countries:

Travel Advisory October 12, 2023
Bangladesh - level 2: exercise increased caution.
Reissued after periodic review with updates to crime, terrorism, kidnapping, and a short-term event.
Exercise increased caution in Bangladesh due to crime, terrorism and the upcoming general election . Some areas have increased risk. Read the entire Travel Advisory.
Reconsider travel to:
- Chittagong Hill Tracts Region due to occasional communal violence, crime, terrorism, kidnapping, and other security risks .
Country Summary: Travelers should be aware of petty crimes such as pickpocketing in crowded areas. Crimes such as muggings, burglaries, assaults, and illegal drug trafficking constitute the majority of criminal activity in Bangladeshâs major cities, but there are no indications foreigners are being targeted because of their nationality. These crimes tend to be situational, based on time and location.
Terrorist attacks can happen with little or no warning, with terrorists targeting public areas such as tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, restaurants, places of worship, school campuses, and government facilities.
The next general election is anticipated to occur before January 2024, and political party rallies and other election-related activities have already commenced. Political rallies and demonstrations may be held with increasing frequency or intensity as the general election draws nearer. Travelers to Bangladesh should practice vigilance and remember that demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.
Because of security concerns U.S. government employees in Bangladesh are subject to some movement and travel restrictions. The U.S. government may have limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in Bangladesh due to these travel restrictions, a lack of infrastructure, and limited host government emergency response resources.
Read the country information page for additional information on travel to Bangladesh.
If you decide to travel to Bangladesh:
- Avoid demonstrations and political gatherings.
- Do not physically resist any robbery attempt. Get to a safe area and report any criminal incident to local authorities.
- Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program ( STEP ) to receive alerts and so it is easier to locate you in an emergency.
- Follow the State Department on Facebook or Twitter .
- Review the Country Security Report for Bangladesh.
- Visit the CDC page for the latest Travel Health Information related to your travel.

Chittagong Hill Tracts Region - Level 3: Reconsider Travel
Reconsider travel to the Khagrachari, Rangamati, and Bandarban Hill Tracts districts (collectively known as the Chittagong Hill Tracts) due to occasional communal violence, crime, terrorism, kidnapping, and other security risks . Kidnappings have occurred in the region, including those motivated by domestic or familial disputes, and those targeting religious minorities. Separatist organizations and political violence also pose additional threats to visitors to the region, and there have been recent instances of IED explosions and active shooting. Prior approval from the Government of Bangladeshâs Ministry of Home Affairs Office of Public Safety is required if you plan to travel to these areas.

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements
Passports and Visas:
- Passports must be valid for six months beyond your planned stay in Bangladesh, have at least one blank page, and have a Bangladeshi visa. You must possess an onward or return ticket.
- We strongly recommend obtaining a visa before traveling. Although U.S. citizens are eligible to apply for a tourist visa on arrival, there is no guarantee you will receive one. U.S. citizens born outside the United States may be subject to increased scrutiny or further requirements at the port of entry. Recently, some U.S. citizens have been denied entry into Bangladesh despite believing they had fulfilled the requirements for a visa on arrival. Visit the Embassy of Bangladesh website for visa information.
- Short term travelers can be denied entry if they cannot demonstrate sufficient financial liquidity.
- Visas must be in a valid passport. In country, you may obtain a replacement visa at the Department of Immigration and Passports . Replacing a visa, which is required in order to exit the country, may take three to four business days.
- 1 to 14 days = 200 Bangladeshi taka per day + 160 U.S. dollars (or equivalent in Bangladeshi taka) processing fee payable at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
- 15 to 30 days = 500 Bangladeshi taka per day + 160 U.S. dollars (or equivalent in Bangladeshi taka) processing fee payable at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
- 31 to 90 days: Fine adjudicated and processed at Department of Immigration and Passport Office, 7th Sher-E-Bangla Nagar, Agargaon, Dhaka. Over 90 days: Potential prosecution by the Department of Immigration and Passport Authority under Article 31 of the Foreigners Act of 1946.
- For further information, visit the⯠Bangladeshi Immigration Police website.
Exit Taxes:
- When traveling by air, all foreigners except children under the age of two must pay a departure tax. While often included when air tickets are purchased, it may be collected at the airport at the time of departure. The amount varies depending on the destination.
- If departing by road in a private vehicle, you must obtain a road exit permit by contacting the Director General, South Asia Wing, Ministry of Foreign Affairs .
U.S.-Bangladesh Dual Nationals:
- If you are a U.S.-Bangladeshi dual national, you and your immediate family members are eligible for a âNo Visa Required for Travel to Bangladeshâ seal. Your nearest Bangladeshi Embassy or Consulate can issue this seal in your U.S. passport.
- If you hold both U.S. and Bangladeshi citizenship, you may not be immediately recognized as a U.S. citizen by the local authorities and may initially be treated as a Bangladeshi citizen.
- Read more information about dual nationality on our website.
- Bangladeshi customs authorities may enforce strict regulations concerning temporary import or export of items such as currency, household appliances, alcohol, cigarettes, and weapons.
- Bangladesh does not allow the exchange of local currency (Bangladeshi taka) for U.S. dollars (cash and travelerâs checks) unless the customer has a ticket for travel outside Bangladesh.
- Contact the Bangladeshi Embassy or Consulates for specific information regarding customs requirements. Please also see our Customs Information .
HIV/AIDS: Some HIV/AIDS entry restrictions exist for visitors to and foreign residents of Bangladesh. Please verify this information with the Embassy of Bangladesh before traveling.
Safety and Security
The U.S. government assesses that there remains a credible terrorist threat against foreigners in Bangladesh.⯠U.S. citizens in Bangladesh should take precautions, remain vigilant, and be alert to local security developments.
There has been no significant terrorist attack in Bangladesh since March 2017, but the country remains a target of several foreign terrorist organizations.⯠Since 2015, ISIS-affiliated terrorists have conducted over 30 attacks that targeted foreigners, religious minorities, and local police/security services.⯠In March 2017, ISIS claimed responsibility for at least three bombings in multiple locations in Bangladesh, including two suicide attacks that targeted security forces near Dhakaâs Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.⯠The third bombing transpired during a police raid against suspected terrorists, killing seven onlookers and injuring 40.⯠In July 2016, ISIS attacked a Dhaka restaurant frequented by Westerners, killing 20 hostages, including a U.S. citizen.⯠If you observe high-profile police activity, depart the area immediately.â¯
Al-Qaâida in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) retains a presence in Bangladesh; the group last carried out attacks in 2015 and 2016 that killed several secular bloggers, publishers, and human rights activists; a U.S. citizen was among the victims.
The following groups, including several on the U.S. governmentâs list of designated Foreign Terrorist Organizations, are active in Bangladesh:
- Islamic State of Iraq and ash-Sham (ISIS), known locally as Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB or âNeo-JMBâ)
- Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), known locally as Ansar al-Islam
- Lashkar-e-Tayyiba
- Indigenous sectarian groups
U.S. government personnel in Bangladesh live, work, and travel under strict security guidelines and are prohibited from:
- Traveling on foot (walking, running) and biking outside of designated areas and times;
- Traveling via non-registered rickshaws outside designated areas and times;
- Traveling via commercial ride-share services, public buses, or compressed natural gas autorickshaw (CNG);
- Visiting public establishments outside of designated areas and times without prior notification; and
- Attending widely-publicized large gatherings, including events at international hotels,.
- Tourism:⯠The tourism industry is nascent, unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities do not commonly occur. Hazardous areas/activities are often not identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in/near major cities. First responders are generally unable to provide urgent medical treatment. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance .
Local Laws & Special Circumstances
Criminal Penalties: â¯You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Penalties for possessing, using, or trafficking in illegal drugs are particularly severe.
Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on⯠crimes against minors abroad â¯and the⯠Department of Justice â¯website.
- Penalties for possessing, using, or trafficking in illegal drugs in Bangladesh are severe, including long jail sentences, heavy fines, or even death.
- You may be taken in for questioning if you do not have your passport with you, or if you take pictures of certain buildings, such as military facilities, embassies, police stations, shipyards, traffic inspection facilities, or airports. This list is not meant to be exhaustive. You should exercise caution when photographing government facilities in general.
- Driving under the influence is illegal and could result in immediate incarceration.
Arrest Notification: â¯If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our⯠webpage â¯for further information.
Drones: â¯All forms of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS), colloquially known as âdrones,â are highly regulated and restricted in Bangladesh and are subject to import and flight restrictions. Failure to obtain import and/or flight permission can result in detention and/or arrest, as well as confiscation of the RPAS. Visit the⯠Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh â¯website for the latest RPAS regulations.
Forced Marriage: â¯A marriage must be entered into with the full and free consent of both individuals. We can provide help and advice if you are being forced into a marriage against your will. Please refer to our⯠information on forced marriage . All travelers to Bangladesh, including Bangladeshi citizens, should maintain possession of their passports and return plane tickets to ensure independence to travel.
Registration for Renters: â¯The Bangladesh Government requests biodata and other personal information from all residents. This registration is mandatory for renters but is voluntary for homeowners and foreigners. Dual nationals, former Bangladesh nationals, and âNo Visa Requiredâ seal holders are considered Bangladeshi for registration purposes.
Property Disputes:â¯
- Land disputes are common in Bangladesh and are extremely difficult to resolve through legal channels.
- We cannot protect personal property and cannot take sides in a legal dispute.
- If you wish to purchase property in Bangladesh be aware of the risks including those of not being physically present to oversee your property.
Natural Disasters:â¯
- Heavy flooding occurs during the monsoon season (June to October), and 30 percent of the country may be under water. Lightning strikes are common during the monsoon season and outdoor activity should be avoided during storms. Landslides can also occur during heavy rains, particularly in the hill tracts area of the Bandarban district in the southeast.
- Cyclones occur most frequently in the pre-monsoon (April and May) and post-monsoon (October and November) seasons and could include wind speeds of up to 150 km/hr and storm surges of up to 5 meters.
- Bangladesh is at severe risk from tornadoes.
Bangladesh is in a zone 2B earthquake fault region, with a moderate probability of damaging ground motion. The overwhelming majority of structures in Bangladesh would not withstand a moderate earthquake. Although earthquakes are more likely to occur in the north of the country, destruction from an earthquake is expected to be most acute in urban areas. Post-earthquake disaster relief capabilities are extremely limited.
You should make contingency plans for travel in Bangladesh. Leave emergency contact information with family members outside of Bangladesh and enroll in the⯠Smart Traveler Enrollment Program â¯( STEP ). General information about natural disaster preparedness is available from the⯠U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)⯠and at⯠Ready.gov . For more information on disaster preparedness, please visit:
- U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)
- FEMA: Earthquakes
- FEMA for Kids: Emergency Preparedness

Fire Safety:⯠Fires in residential and commercial buildings are not uncommon in Bangladesh, and first responders' capacity to control flames is limited. Many multi-story residential buildings and shopping malls lack proper fire extinguishers, emergency exits, among other fire safety features. Stay aware of your surroundings and emergency exits.

LGBTQI+â¯Rights: â¯Consensual same-sex sexual activity is criminalized in Bangladesh and penalties include up to life imprisonment. See our⯠LGBTQI Travel Information â¯page and section 6 of our⯠Human Rights report â¯for further details. In 2016, AQIS specifically targeted and killed two prominent members of the Bangladesh LGBTQI+ community in their apartment because of their human rights activism and sexual orientation.
Persons with Mobility Issues: â¯Public transportation, sidewalks, many buildings, and most public areas are not wheelchair accessible.
For emergency services in Bangladesh, dial 999.
Ambulance services are widely available, but training and availability of emergency responders may be below U.S. standards.
COVID-19 Testing: PCR and/or antigen tests are available for U.S. citizens in Bangladesh. The government of Bangladesh has provided a list of recommended COVID-19 testing facilities for international passengers here . Those wishing to get tested will have to pay for their own COVID-19 test. Results are often delivered via text message and are, in most cases, linked to a QR code.
COVID-19 Vaccines: The COVID-19 vaccine is available for U.S. citizens to receive in Bangladesh. The Government of Bangladesh started its national COVID-19 vaccination program in January 2021. The program includes AstraZeneca, Pfizer/BioNTech, Moderna, Janssen (Johnson and Johnson), Sinopharm, and Sinovak vaccines. The Government of Bangladesh is now offering COVID-19 vaccines to those who do not have a Bangladesh national ID (NID) or a locally registered birth certificate, including all foreign nationals. Individuals who have yet to receive a vaccine are encouraged to call the Bangladesh Health hotline at 16263 to identify the nearest vaccine center. Please carry a passport or another form of government-issued identification and be ready to provide a Bangladeshi mobile phone number.
Those who do not have an NID or locally registered birth certificate may not register for a vaccine via the surokkha.gov.bd vaccine portal, and as a result, would be unable to receive a Bangladeshi vaccine certificate with a QR code. Anyone vaccinated at a vaccine center, however, will receive a handwritten vaccine card to carry as proof of vaccination against COVID-19.
Those interested in obtaining a booster dose may follow the procedure described above and should be ready to present proof of previous vaccination against COVID-19. Individuals become eligible for a booster dose four months after their last dose is administered. This information is also available at the Directorate General for Health Services website .
If any U.S. citizen wishes to register through the Surokkha website to get the QR coded vaccine certificate, they should follow the instructions below and provide the U.S. Embassy in Dhaka with all the required information so that we can forward it to the Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the purpose of vaccination against COVID-19.
Visit the FDAâs website to learn more about FDA-approved vaccines in the United States.
We do not pay medical bills. Be aware that U.S. Medicare does not apply overseas.
Medical Insurance: Make sure health insurance plans provide coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See our webpage for more information on overseas insurance coverage.
We strongly advise supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.
Medical Care: Though quality of care is below U.S. standards, most common illnesses can be treated locally. U.S. citizens often travel outside Bangladesh for routine surgical procedures and complicated medical treatment.
- A centrally coordinated medical emergency response system is not available. A list of hospitals and doctors in Dhaka can be found on the U.S. Embassy website.
- Bangladesh has no prohibitions on specific medications. Always carry prescription medication in original packaging with a doctorâs prescription.
- The sale of counterfeit medications has been reported, but medications from major pharmacies and hospitals are generally reliable.
Vaccinations: Be up-to-date on all vaccinations recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
- In the past few years, a large number of both Chikungunya and Japanese Encephalitis cases has been reported. You should consider the Japanese Encephalitis vaccine for prevention.
- Dengue is endemic in Bangladesh and during the 2019 summer season, increased cases are being reported as compared to the last 5 years. Should you develop symptoms of fever, headache, rash, or muscle/joint aching, you should seek medical attention early in your illness.
- Malaria is reported in 13 districts in the northeast and southeast regions of Bangladesh. If planning travel there, you should consult with your physician regarding taking medication for malaria prophylaxis.
- The CDC also considers Bangladesh an area with risk of Zika infection, though it is uncommon. Pregnant women, travelers with a pregnant partner, and women considering becoming pregnant should speak to their healthcare provider about possible Zika risk before travel.
Prevention is key:
- Regular use of insect repellent and long garments is recommended as protection against mosquito-borne illness.
- Water supplies in Bangladesh are non-potable. Bottled drinking water is generally safe for consumption.
- Foodborne illnesses are common. Wash, soak in sanitizing solution, peel, and thoroughly cook all food to minimize chemical, bacterial, and parasitic contamination.
Air quality in Dhaka is consistently poor and especially hazardous from November to March. We recommend avoiding prolonged outdoor exposure during these months. N95 filtration masks/respirators that are NIOSH certified are helpful, but you need to have a good fit and seal when using them. Current Dhaka air quality can be found here .

Travel and Transportation
Road Conditions and Safety:
- Bangladeshis drive on the left, the opposite of U.S. driving patterns.
- Roads are extremely crowded, are poorly maintained, often lack shoulders, have sharp drop-offs, and have barriers that are not sign-posted. Roadways often contain a mix of human and vehicular traffic, occasionally traveling against the flow of traffic.
- Drivers are often unlicensed, aggressive, and poorly trained. Many vehicles, particularly large trucks and buses, are poorly maintained. Larger vehicles generally take the right-of-way.
- Speed limits and other traffic laws are not commonly posted and are rarely observed by motorists. Vehicles often run red lights and merge directly into traffic without stopping.
- Drivers use car horns or flash their high-beam headlights to announce their presence in all areas of Bangladesh day or night.
Road accidents, including fatal head-on collisions, are common in Bangladesh. When traveling by road:
- Exercise extreme caution when crossing streets, even in areas frequented by pedestrians.
- Use seatbelts if available and wear helmets on motorcycles and bicycles.
- Do not travel by road without an experienced local driver or guide.
- Exercise particular vigilance along intercity highways, as banditry and carjacking have been known to occur.
- Monitor local news for any reports of road disturbances, as protestors and demonstrators often use road blockage as a means of publicizing their grievances.
If a serious accident occurs, or if a driver hits a pedestrian or livestock, crowds quickly gather, and the behavior of the crowd is often unpredictable. The vehicle and its occupants may be at risk of being attacked in such circumstances depending on who the crowd believes is at fault and what damage has occurred. Such attacks may pose significant risk of injury or death to the vehicleâs occupants or of damage to the vehicle. It is unsafe to remain at the scene of an accident of this nature. Seek shelter at the nearest police station.
Please refer to our Road Safety page for more information. We also suggest that you visit Bangladeshâs National Tourism Organization website.
Public Transportation:
- The U.S. Embassy prohibits U.S. government officials and their family members from using buses, trains, motorcycles, rickshaws, and compressed natural gas autorickshaws (CNGs) due to high accident rates and crime issues.
- The Bangladeshi passenger rail system is antiquated and overburdened. Some political activists target rail lines during civil unrest by hurling explosives and removing rail ties from the tracks, making trips unusually dangerous and frequently causing cancellations. Even in peaceful times, foreigners are often the center of attention at many train stations because of the relatively atypical presence of foreign travelers on rail in the country.
Aviation Safety Oversight:
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) current determination is that the Government of Bangladeshâs Civil Aviation Authority does not provide safety oversight of its air carrier operators in accordance with the minimum safety oversight standards established by the International Civil Aviation Organization. Further information may be found on the FAAâs safety assessment page .
Maritime Travel: The U.S. Coast Guard has concerns about the security practices in the ports of Bangladesh. Until those concerns can be addressed, the Coast Guard advises that Mariners and passengers on commercial vessels traveling through the ports of Bangladesh should exercise increased caution.
Mariners planning travel to Bangladesh should also check for U.S. maritime advisories and alerts within the MARAD website . Information may also be posted to the U.S. Coast Guard homeport website and the NGA broadcast warnings website . Select âbroadcast warningsâ from within the NGA site.
