Visiting Beaune France Burgundy: Wine Tasting Tour Itinerary

Perfect 2-Day Itinerary: Beaune Burgundy Wine Region

Editor’s Note: This itinerary for visiting the Beaune region of France, (arguably the wine tasting capital within Burgundy), is written by one of our Winetraveler experts from a first-person perspective. This style of itinerary offers unique insight into why visiting these regions can be so special. Sometimes unexpected experiences can be the best.

I’ve mentioned before that my family had the opportunity to live in and travel through Europe as part of a family sabbatical. Well, when we mapped our route driving from Spain through France and to Germany , we had originally planned to spend time touring the city of Dijon. However, we never made it.

Instead, we stopped early owing to exhaustion and the waning patience of our two children (and thereby us) and opted to stay a few days in the beautiful village of Beaune . Located in the heart of the Burgundy wine region , it really made more sense for us as Winetravelers anyway. So while we went wine tasting in Burgundy with kids in tow, this Burgundy itinerary also works for anyone.

Village of Beaune Burgundy

Truth be told, the reason we ended up staying three nights in Beaune, rather than moving on to Dijon, is owed entirely to the proprietor of the hotel we found by chance. We really hadn’t done our research on Beaune, as we expected to be in Dijon, but Hotel Le Home  had good reviews and was easy to find.

Once we arrived, we were greeted by our host Mathilde with much enthusiasm. A mother herself, she immediately recognized the deteriorating family situation and graciously offered us a suite of adjoining rooms for the price of one. It was off-season, and she had the availability, as well as tremendous empathy.

The arrangements worked perfectly as the kids had their space and we had ours. (I should note, this is also where our children hatched a plan to form their own country – no parents allowed – and wrote a constitution, laws, and monetary system and declared war with the enemy parents!) The months, and years, of ensuing laughter, comradery, and hours of entertainment, were all sparked by this happenstance stay owing to the graciousness of Mathilde.

The exquisitely dressed and very fashionable proprietor also spent a considerable amount of time with us mapping out a fabulous family itinerary for our two-day visit. She took the time to understand our interests and offer numerous ideas for both the children and adults from which we could easily choose to fill our days.

Outlined below are the options we chose to spend our days accommodating everyone’s interests and creating some amazing memories that will not soon be forgotten.

Wine Tours and Getting Around Beaune Burgundy

Vineyards in Beaune, Burgundy under a beautiful sky

Our situation was slightly different than most, as we arrived in Europe via Spain and ended months later in Italy. If you should find yourself in a similar situation, I highly recommend the long-term car rental program through Renault . We had unlimited mileage, an English GPS system, and insurance. And as a bonus, we were also able to rent an automatic transmission!

However, if like most, you’re traveling for days or weeks, Beaune is easily accessible by train from most major French cities. You can plan train travel in advance here . Or you can also rent a car at the airport , which will give you more flexibility and freedom. Beaune is only a three-hour drive from Strasbourg and Paris and just less than two hours from Lyon. Get updates on flight deals into France here .

Once you’ve made it to Beaune, we highly recommend utilizing some of the local knowledge to experience the region from a local’s perspective. One of our favorite privately guided day trips is offered by Melanie of My French Tour. She’ll take you around in a vintage car and customize your day based on your travel preferences. Plus, you’ll get to stop at locations and have experiences you would otherwise miss.

If you’re looking for more of a luxury experience, Bourgogne Gold Tour offers local expertise and stops at the most iconic wineries and sights across Burgundy. See it all from the comfort of a Mercedes Benz. This is one of Winetraveler reader’s favorites when visiting the region. The same company offers a full-day trip to both Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits . This is a special tour that can be customized, offered by local guides who really know the wines of the region. You’ll get to meet the winemakers and have one of the most immersive experiences in Burgundy.

Where to stay in beaune burgundy.

Obviously, I recommend Hotel Le Home , but Airbnb and TripAdvisor also provide numerous options for your stay from luxury accommodations including Hôtel Le Cep & SPA Marie de Bourgogne to more family-friendly, budget options like Accor Hotels’ Ibis in the city center  (with prices this low, splurge and opt for two rooms to offer a little more space with the kids!).

Wine Tasting in Beaune: Self-Guided Options

Marché aux vins.

7 Rue de l’Hôtel Dieu, 21200 Beaune, France

+33 3 80 25 08 20

A boutique wine shop located in Beaune’s city center, the Marché is a wonderful place to browse a plethora of regional wines, but also to take a self-guided tour through the caves beneath the shop. Although not a personal tour in the least, it’s a great option with kids. Upon purchase of the tour you receive a tastevin – a traditional tasting cup designed in Burgundy. Although not practical, it is rather romantic. You’re then directed to the cellars which you can explore at your leisure. Bottles are open throughout for you to pour your own samples (or as in our case, the children can pour as they pretend to be sommeliers – questionable parenting aside, our kids had a blast donning accents and spouting their “wine knowledge.”) The caves are fascinating to explore with their numerous rooms and even old church ruins.

Beaune Wine Tasting Guide and Travel Tips | Winetraveler.com

Patriarche Père Et Fils

5-7 Rue du Collège/r Paul Chanson, 21200 Beaune, France

+33 3 80 24 53 78

A well-known producer in the region, Patriarche also offers self-guided tours which are often a great option with children as you can move at their pace. Interactive video terminals placed throughout the route will guide you through the wine cellars, their history and the great wines aged there. You can also taste a range of 10 Burgundy wines and seek advice from the wine consultants on-hand.

Louis Jadot

62 Rte de Savigny, 21200 Beaune, France

+33 3 80 26 31 98

A mere 10-minute walk from Hotel Le Home, Louis Jadot is a name synonymous with Burgundy and Beaujolais. Depending on your time and energy, you can opt for a guided tour or simply walk-in and taste as we did. The tasting room is open to all from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays, and 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturdays. At 3 p.m. Mondays to Fridays, and 10 a.m. on Saturday, scheduled visits to the winemaking and maturation cellars — followed by a tasting — are available by reservation.

Worthy of Your Time: More Places To Taste Wine in Beaune

Château de pommard.

15 Rue Marey Monge, 21630 Pommard, France

+33 3 80 22 07 99

Although today American-owned, Château de Pommard offers an exquisite wine tasting and fascinating tour of the caves and vineyards. We arranged this tour by appointment through our hotel and arrived a few minutes early. As we waited for the tour host, we were shown to a waiting area which doubled as a winemaking museum with years of wine making tools and equipment, including one of the largest wooden wine presses I’ve ever seen. It’s hard to get a feel for just how big it is, other than to say it’s easier to imagine some mythical giants using it rather than actual humans. As for the tour, it was short enough to keep the kids from getting antsy and informative enough that we walked away with a much greater understanding of the soils, vines, region and wine production (as well as several bottles of wine).

Where To Go Wine Tasting in Beaune, Burgundy, France

Maison Joseph Drouhin

7 Rue d’Enfer, 21200 Beaune, France

+33 3 80 24 68 88

Honestly, for me, it doesn’t get much better than the wines of Joseph Drouhin. For the last 139 years, Maison Joseph Drouhin has been in the hands of the Drouhin family , not an easy accomplishment with French estate laws. Today, however, the fourth generation leads the winery with a focus on terroir, exquisite quality and elegance. Production is also completely organic throughout their 90 different appellations. With a tasting room and cellar located in the heart of Beaune within the Duke of Burgundy’s Parliament building, a tasting and tour at Maison Joseph Drouhin is a fascinating discovery of history and wine. Tours are available by appointment only and include a personal tour through the most ancient cellars of Beaune followed by a tasting of six iconic wines from Maison Joseph Drouhin. During this approximately one and a half hour tour, you will also find ancient Roman remnants, nearly 2000 years old.

While the wines of Burgundy are renowned worldwide, I doubt many consider the region as a family destination. But whether you find yourself stopping en route to the Monkey Mountain in Alsace , or specifically plan to take your family to Burgundy because kids or not, it’s a great wine trip, the itinerary outlined here is how we mapped our days with kids in tow. To this day, these moments in Beaune remain a top highlight of our time overseas. Burgundy — and Beaune in particular — is a place you can have your cake and eat it too (or in this case wine and crepes!).

Where To Stay in Beaune France, What To See and Do | Winetraveler.com

Top Things to Do in Beaune Burgundy

Marché de beaune.

The weekly market at Beaune is a haven for foodies, held every Saturday morning in the town center. Local producers gather to showcase their finest cheeses, meats, fresh fruits and vegetables, and a wide variety of other mouthwatering delicacies. This is the perfect opportunity to indulge in the Burgundy region’s culinary culture, chat with the locals, and even pick up some ingredients for a picnic in the nearby vineyards.

Hospices de Beaune

Next, we continued with a visit to the famed Hospices de Beaune, a hospital that opened in the mid-15th century and was still treating patients as recently as the 1980s. The hospices were designed as a place to treat the poor and served as a model for the hospitals that would come afterward. The Hospice tour came with an audio guide for both adults and children, the children’s version is narrated by a fly and a snake. The fly — quite a morbid creature — described what it was like to drink the blood of patients who filled the barracks back in the early days of medicine. This generated rapturous laughter from our kids who were thoroughly entertained. (Bloodletting was also normal back in the day – eek!)

In all seriousness, the Hospices are a fascinating walk through history and have been supported over the years by a charity wine auction, featuring wines from prestigious vineyards that have been acquired or donated to the Hospices over time. The Hospices produce some of the best wines in Burgundy, and the auction raises millions of Euros to support itself and various other charities. For example, the year of our visit, the auction was held two days after attacks in Paris and generated over $12 million, with a third of that going to support the victims of the attacks.

Things To Do in Beaune - Edmond Fallot Moutarderie | Winetraveler.com

Edmond Fallot Moutarderie

Fallot makes Dijon-style mustard in the last family-owned Moutarderie in Burgundy and offers tours of the operations facility and museum, complete with a mustard tasting at the end. We must have tried more than 20 different flavors of mustard, most of which were very good and all packed a wallop of spice. The tour itself is entertaining with a decent amount of science and history lessons built in for the kids.

La Cave de l’Ange Gardien

For Winetravelers, a visit to La Cave de l’Ange Gardien is a must. This intimate and charming wine cellar offers tastings of some of the finest Burgundy wines, including rare and aged selections. The knowledgeable staff will guide you through your tasting experience, sharing stories of the region’s rich winemaking history and helping you discover your new favorite bottle.

Parc de la Bouzaize

From strolls around the pond and an afternoon spent on swings, to the exotic birds wandering the grounds, the Parc de la Bouzaize is a great place for the kids to burn off steam. It’s also a great place where they can play on the park equipment while you stroll hand-in-hand around the paths (all while keeping them in sight). And for the little ones, you may even spot Mother Goose!

Things to do in Beaune France with kids

Le Clos des Remparts

Nestled within the medieval city walls, Le Clos des Remparts is a beautiful and serene garden, perfect for a leisurely stroll or a moment of quiet reflection. This hidden gem is home to a variety of colorful flowers, lush greenery, and even an ancient Roman wall. For adventurers seeking a moment of tranquility amidst their busy itinerary, Le Clos des Remparts is an ideal escape.

Bike Tour Through the Vineyards

For those who crave a little more adventure, a guided bike tour through the picturesque vineyards surrounding Beaune is the perfect way to take in the breathtaking scenery. Several local companies offer half-day or full-day tours, but our favorite is operated by Bourgogne Velo Evasion , complete with a knowledgeable guide who will introduce you to the region’s winemaking traditions and the unique terroir that makes Burgundy wines so sought-after. Don’t forget to stop at a few wineries along the way to sample the local wines and savor the flavors of the region.

City Stroll

The town center of Beaune is a great place to stroll for shopping, art (including some works of Dalí), a tour through the Basilique Notre-Dame de Beaune or a ride on the free carousel. While I can’t recall any particular places we ate, I do know our children enjoyed the crepes, escargot, croque monsieur and good old fashioned hamburgers (actually made from ham!) with frites.

La Table de Levernois

For a truly unforgettable dining experience, make a reservation at La Table de Levernois, a Michelin-starred restaurant located just outside Beaune. The chef’s exquisite menu showcases the finest local ingredients, with each dish expertly crafted to delight the senses. The elegant atmosphere and impeccable service make this an ideal choice for a special occasion or a romantic evening out. Remember to pair your meal with a selection from their impressive wine list to complete the culinary adventure.

The Wines of Beaune

Burgundy reds are made entirely from Pinot Noir grapes and the whites from Chardonnay , so it’s easy to understand what you’re drinking and it’s a very distinctive experience focused on terroir. Compared to Bordeaux, the classification system is based on region rather than vineyard.

The most prestigious wines are single-vineyard, but many other wines draw from multiple vineyards from a single village, such as Beaune, or throughout the region. Burgundian wines are soft and approachable, easy to understand and very easy to drink. And you can absolutely experience them while traveling as a family.

About Burgundy Wines

The Burgundy region is divided into plots known as “climates.” Each has its own name and distinct soil composition. There are over 1,000 in the Burgundy Region alone.  The vines here are so expensive that one plot having different owners is standard practice. For that reason, wines are identified first by the name of the vineyard and second by the owner of the vines.

Burgundy is known mainly for its red wines, but the region also produces white. Red Burgundy is made with the pinot grape, and white Burgundy with chardonnay.  The wines are divided into four different classifications based on quality, with Grand Crus being the best of the best. In total, Grand Crus make up only 1% of the total wines produced in Burgundy.

Located in the heart of Burgundy, Beaune is known for being home to some of the region’s most renowned vineyards. The following places are great options for those interested in learning more about Burgundy wines. From extensive wine stores to private tastings, the following list includes options for all interests and levels of wine connoisseurs.

Beaune wine tasting

Joseph Drouhin

Best For: Best overall tour with tasting.

Joseph Drouhin is not just one of the best wine producers in Beaune; its headquarters are located in the oldest cellars in the city. And with over a dozen Grand Crus alone, the family of winemakers is known for their quality of wines.

The vineyard offers wine tours through its medieval cellars as part of a tasting experience. These cellars were once used by the monks of Burgundy, who are to thank for the start of Burgundy wines. They were created next to Notre Dame Collegiate Church and used as far back as the 3rd century. In total, the many passages extend almost one hector under the city.

In addition to the monks, the Dukes of Burgundy and the Kings used to store their wine here before they were purchased by  Robert Drouhin in the 1960s. These same cellars continue to be used to house the wine producer’s barrels.

Joseph Drouhin was our favorite tour. It was fascinating to visit such historic cellars, and our guide did an excellent job teaching us about the history of Burgundy wines. You will learn a lot about wine production and get within inches of the family’s private and very expensive stash.

Not once did we feel obligated to purchase any wines during our visit, and the guide truly has a passion for what she does. A visit to Joseph Drouhin is one of Beaune’s best all-around tours and tastings, perfect for people who appreciate history and love wine.

Cellar Tours and Tastings:

The main guided tour lasts 90 minutes and costs €45 per person with groups of up to 8 people. It combines a tour of the 13th-century cellars, an overview of the burgundy wine region, and a tasting of 6 wines.

The tour starts with a visit to the original wine press. The wine press dates back to 1571, when it was the primary tool used to press grapes.  Today, it is still used to produce special batches of anniversary wines.

From there, you will continue down to the cellars, learning about the different varieties and some fun facts about the wines housed there. You will also get to see the family’s private stash of wines.

As you walk through the cellars, your tour guide will highlight some historic parts for you. One of the most remarkable is the 2000-year-old Roman foundation that makes up one of the cellar’s walls.

After the cellar tour comes the anticipated tasting of three white and three red wines, your guide will walk you through each of the wines, explaining where they come from and discussing their tasting notes. From there, you will step back into the wine shop, where you will likely stock up on some bottles.

Joseph Drouhin also hosts special events and more thematic tastings for guests, such as vineyard tours, specialty tastings, and food and wine pairings. All upcoming events are on their website and must be reserved in advance.

Some unique tastings include the Gourmet Tasting of 5 wines paired with local desserts. Another is the Blind Tasting for those interested in learning more about the characteristics of burgundy wines.

Maison Champy

Best For: Several tour options, including a vinyard e-bike tour.

Maison Champy is the oldest wine merchant in Burgundy, first established in 1720. A portion of the vineyard, Le Close de Bully, is even older, having been planted by monks in 1158. Maison Champy owns around twenty-one hectares of vines, most in Côte de Beaune.  In recent years, the winemaker has been using organic methods to produce their wines.

In addition to the vineyards, Maison Champy has a lovely boutique in Beaune if you want to purchase some bottles. Many of their tours and tastings also take place here.

Tours and Tastings:

Mansion Champy offers a handful of experiences for visitors. The guided cellar tour and tasting lasts around an hour and a half and combines visiting the 15th-century cellars with a sampling of 5 wines.  Prices range from €25 to €55 depending on the wine tier you try.

The Terroir Tasting includes an assortment of 5 Village and Premier Cru Wines, while the Prestige Tasting allows you to sample the highly coveted Premier and Grand Cru wines.

For a more personalized experience, the €135 Terroir Tasting offers a private tour of the cellars, with access to parts closed to the public. This tour dives deeper into the history of the House of Champy and the secrets behind their excellent wines.

Another experience offered is an e-bike vineyard tour. The excursion is a fun way to discover the terroirs of Burgundy up close before meeting back at the tasting room for your wine tasting.

Are you looking to skip the tour and enjoy a tasting instead? Maison Champy offers hour-long wine tastings at their boutique as well. Like any of the experiences, tastings must be scheduled online or by phone in advance.

For the ultimate experience, immerse yourself in a food and wine pairing. Maison Champy offers lunch and dinner experiences, including a visit to the ancient cellars and a four-course meal paired with their wines. Prices for the food and wine pairing vary based on meal and level of wines and start at €95.

Burgundy wine tasting

Château de Pommard

Best For: Private tastings of some of Burgundy’s more expensive wines.

Château de Pommard has Burgundy’s largest privately-owned clos (walled vineyard). Within the clos are seven types of terroir, all comprised of a different mixture of clay, limestones, and sand. With such diverse soil, the vineyard can produce an impressive 200,000 wine varieties.

It takes more than just the soil to produce such high-quality wines. The winemaking process is also critical. Each year the grapes are harvested by hand as it is the gentlest way to collect them. From there, they are sorted through to ensure ripeness and quality.

Even the soil is plowed using traditional methods of horses instead of machines. Although this is more time-consuming, it ensures that the ancient roots of the vines are not crushed, and the soil is turned more delicately.

wine tours from beaune

Château de Pommard was our favorite wine tasting in Beaune. The tour takes place in a large room inside the château, overlooking Pommard’s vines with your own personal wine expert. Not only did they do a great job of explaining the concept of the terroir, but the entire experience was well thought out and felt very high-end.

Château de Pommard hosts many tours and experiences throughout the year. The Clos Marey-Monge Tasting is a great all-around experience that includes a look at the different terroir and winemaking techniques that make each wine unique.

Your wine advisor will teach you about the types of wines produced before guiding you through a tasting of six varieties. Their approach to wine tasting is perfect for those wanting to learn more about winemaking techniques. Beaune wine tasting

Patriarche Père et Fils

Best For: Self-guided tours without the need to make reservations in advance.

We have John the Baptist Patriarch to thank for starting Patriarche Père et Fils when he purchased the headquarters in 1780.

Patriarche Père et Fils is an excellent place for those looking for an interactive and self-guided tour of the winemaking world. The cellars extend over 5 kilometers underground and house over 2 million bottles of wine. Both guided and self-guided tours are offered, allowing access to parts of these 13th-century cellars.

One of the most popular tour options is the Wine & Tasting Freedom Tour which is available every 30 minutes from 9:30 am until 5:00 pm. For only €20, the self-guided tour allows you to explore the most extensive cellars in Burgundy with the help of an audio guide. In total, plan on spending about an hour for the entire experience. Once you’ve completed the self-guided part of the tour, you will get a chance to sample 6 different wines (3 white and 3 red).

The Wine & Tasting Freedom Tour is perfect for people who prefer to explore the cellars independently. These tours are also fantastic if you have extra time in your day and want to stop by without the need to make an advanced reservation like most other vineyards.

You will want to book the private Privilege Tour in advance. These are run by an experienced sommelier who will take you on a guided tour of the cellars before sampling 8 Burgundy wines. You will also be given a special bottle of wine at the end of your visit.

The Privilege Tour lasts around 2 hours and offers a more intimate wine-tasting experience. Prices for this tour range depending on the number of participants in your group, with a flat rate of €275 for groups of less than five people.

Burgundy wine tasting

Maison Chanson Pere & Fils

Best For: Those looking for a quick, inexpensive tasting without a tour.

The vineyard first began in 1750 under the name Maison Verry. It wasn’t until over 25 years later that they purchased the first cellars, which are still used today. Today, Maison Chanson Pere & Fils owns over 25 hectares of Premier Cru vines, one of the largest parcels by one owner in Beaune.

Maison Chanson Pere & Fils is located in an old Bastions that they purchased after the French Revolution to store the vineyard’s wine barrels. Louis XI originally built them as defense towers with walls up to 8 feet thick. Due to their thickness, they create the perfect temperature and humidity for storing wine.

Private wine tasting is available upon request and consists of 2 Villages and 2 Premiers Crus wines. Tastings are performed in the wine shop with a wine expert and last about 45 minutes. It was a great intimate experience, perfect for those interested in an inexpensive, private tasting.  After your tasting, you can explore the outside gardens of the Maison before heading to your next tasting.

Beaune wine tasting

Bouchard Aîné et Fils

Best For: Private wine and food pairing options in a beautiful setting.

Bouchard Aîné et Fils began with Michel Bouchard, who settled in Burgundy in 1731 and started a fabric and wine business. It was not until 1750 that his son Joseph officially took over the business and began to expand the family’s status in the world of wine.

Centuries later, you can find the producer’s wines in over 130 countries worldwide. Today, the vineyard now belongs to the Boisset Family, who are responsible for opening their cellars up to the public.

The vineyard offers a few different experiences, the most popular being the Tour of the 5 Senses. You can find the headquarters of Bouchard Aîné et Fils in the lovely Hôtel du Conseiller du Roy in the town of Beaune. It is here where you will have your tasting.  Offered five times a day, The Discovery Tour includes a unique experience that will teach you to explore wines using your senses.

The tour includes a history of the winemaker, a tour of the cellars, and tastings of 5 wines. For an added cost, you may be interested in the Souvenir Tour, which includes an additional bottle of Villages wine. Although reservations are not required, they are recommended.

Want to experience more of Bouchard Aîné et Fils? Then join the winemakers for a personalized lunch or dinner at their headquarters. Five different dining experiences are offered, starting at €46 per person, each beginning with the cellar visit and ending with a personalized meal in one of the mansion’s private rooms.

wine tours from beaune

Marché Aux Vins

Best For: A large assortment of wines to purchase.

Marché Aux Vins is a large wine store specializing in Burgundy wines. They offer tours, tastings, and a wealth of knowledge. The large storefront is across from the Hospices of Beaune and is the most popular place to go for purchasing local wine. A fun fact about the shop is that it is housed in a former church. It was converted in 1977 to accommodate the selection of Burgundy wines.

Small group tours and tastings are available several times a day. The Découverte Tour includes a cellar visit and tasting of 5 wines for €25.  For a more in-depth experience, book the Prestige Tour. Like the Découverte Tour, you will be taken down into the cellars but will sample a total of 7 wines. This tour includes four different Premiers Crus as well as a Grand Cru.

Larger group tours of 20 or more people are slightly less expensive, starting at €13, and offer similar experiences. No matter which you choose to join, make sure you reserve your spot online!

You don’t have to schedule a tour for a tasting, though! There are about a dozen wines available to sample before purchase. Make sure to ask a wine expert for help. They are incredibly knowledgeable and will point you in the right direction. And with thousands of wines on the shelves, you may need it! One of our favorite Burgundy wines was purchased here and came highly recommended by one of the staff members.

For those who love wine, there is no question that Burgundy is one of the top regions in France. If you’re looking for the best place to sample and learn about these world-renown wines, you will want to stay in Beaune. The wine capital is home to dozens of winemakers whose storefronts are within walking distance of the city center. And in addition to tastings, there are plenty of delicious restaurants and historical sites to visit.

  • TruBlue97 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fantastic! This tour exceeded my lofty expectations. Joy was so informative and helped us understand the growing of the grapes and the making of the wines in Burgundy. We went to three wineries, where the representatives of the winery expounded further on their particular winemaking. We tasted many wonderful wines. We had a 2 hour delicious lunch during that time. This was probably the highlight of our stay in France. Lastly, Joy was so very helpful in getting wine shipped back home. Read more Written October 19, 2023
  • SpicyTGP 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing Wine Tour and Tasting Amazing tour and tasting through the Burgundy region. We booked the tour early in the year for October and Joy and Robert were excellent in terms of providing advice and planning help ahead of the tour. Joy is very knowledgeable about the region, the wine, and the Domains. Also if you plan to ship any wine home they can help coordinate on that end as well. We highly recommend Burgundy Discovery as guides in Burgundy and I’m sure we will tour with them again on our next visit. Read more Written October 8, 2023
  • 85Eagle 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Gourmet Grand Premiere Tour One should always visit a place like Burgundy with an expert, and we certainly did. Our visits were well planned, and the tour/drive through the vineyards was exactly what I hoped for. Robert gave us a great understanding and appreciation of the region and the wines. We visited during the peak of the harvest, and one of the wine makers gave us a tour and tasting. I am sure he had many other things to do and took his efforts as a sign of his relationship with and respect for Robert. Lunch was great as well - food, wine, and company. I was interested in wines from some properties that we did not visit, and Robert was helpful with that as well. Full, complete, and very knowledgeable service. Much appreciated and highly recommended. Read more Written September 16, 2023

  • charlesvanek 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great Day with Burgundy Discovery We booked a tour for three of us, including our 20-year old son. Patrick was a great tour guide & lunch host. He was amazingly informative and answered all of our numerous questions. The visits Burgundy Discovery created for us at the domaines were informative and varied and the experiences gave us an entry-level understanding of the vinification process and the AOC system. The serendipity was amazing. (As we drove by Patrick said, "this is a famous climat called La Tache.") It's amazing how these seemingly innocuous plots of land produce these amazing wines. "Oh, there's Romanee Conti!" Highly recommended for all. Read more Written December 16, 2019
  • becaroooooo 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Perfect Burgundy Experience My husband and I booked the Grand Premier tour and could not have been happier with our experience with Patrick. We went to a few tastings the day prior, and what we learned is that when you taste through a tour the wineries offer a MUCH better selection. Patrick has really strong relationships with the wineries he took us to, and because of this we were able to try FOUR Grand Cru’s!!! There were also several additional bottles opened that we never would have been able to try if not with Patrick. We had lunch at a charming bistro in the country that looked like every postcard ever seen of Burgundy. I know this tour seems pricey, but if you want to go next level and taste some of the higher quality wines from the region I would recommend booking with Burgundy Discovery! • dwfilice 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A Must-Do Burgundy Tour I booked Burgundy Discovery for 4 (6 total people on our tour), and I must say, if left on my own to tour the wineries in Burgundy, I would have been lost. Yes, there are larger wineries off the main roads which are somewhat easy to find, but visiting the small independent winemakers is somewhat impossible as they are not really setup for visitors. Burgundy Discovery is your link to visit these small independent wine makers. Most have underground caves that are centuries old, dark dank and mysterious...everything I dreamt of when visiting Burgundy. English speaking tour guides (Patrick was the classic charming Englishman) were a huge help for we Americans. Read more Written October 21, 2019

He picked us up promptly in the morning and it was my husband, 2 adult children and another couple. We visited 2 very different vineyards and learned so much about the wine in Burgundy and sampled many different wines including a Grand Cru or two. Lunch was fabulous at a quaint restaurant with wonderful options and more wine pairings. We finished the day at another vineyard and then toured the countryside seeing the different areas and terrains. Robert is so knowledgeable and extremely accommodating. They have developed relationships with some great wine producers. My wife and I enjoyed the variety of top quality wines that were chosen for us. Our private tour was made very personal for us and the restaurants that were chosen for lunches were top notch. I would highly recommend using this company to take you around Burgundy as they are knowledgable and fun. Read more Written September 28, 2019

The full day was very well organized and packed with both information and wine tastings. Yet relaxed and time for small talk. Service was flawless from booking to the end. Highly recommend! Chablis | sancerre | burgundy | beaujolais.

This one-day Beaujolais wine tour will take you into the idyllic countryside of the Beaujolais where the landscapes are described as the « Tuscany of France ». Here you will marvel at a timeless countryside with rolling hills and vineyards, stunning golden-stoned villages and striking châteaux. You day out with us will also be your opportunity to learn all about the Beaujolais wines, which just keep getting better and better !

Local vineyards

Our one-day Sancerre wine tour is the perfect one-day excursion for guests staying in Paris and who are looking for a full day in the heart of the French countryside where they can experience the charm and beauty of rural France, drink their favourite wines and meet the local people. Your Sancerre wine tour will also take you over the majestic river Loire to sample some more world-class Sauvignon blanc wines in the nearby beautiful vineyards of Pouilly-Fumé.

This 1-day Chablis wine tour will introduce you to one of the world’s most famous wines, as well the nearby but lesser-known wine-growing districts of the Auxerrois where you will discover some superb red and lesser-known white wines. During your tour you will taste many different wines and discover the age-old savoir-faire and traditions of the local wine growers. You will also learn about the unique terroir of the Chablis vineyards and which gives the Chablis wines their unique minerality.

How to choose your french wine tour.

We specialise in unique tailor-made French wine tours in Burgundy 'Chablis & northern Burgundy' as well as 'Beaune and the Route of the Grands Crus', and the Central Loire Valley ( Sancerre & Pouilly-Fumé). We also provide a Beaujolais wine tour , a wine region just south of Burgundy . The Chablis & northern Burgundy wine tour is suited for guests staying in Paris or Beaune as the region is easily accessible by train. We therefore send the most convenient train schedules and we then pick up the guests from the nearby train station and drop them off at the end of their excursion. The Pouilly-Fumé & Sancerre wine tour is also highly suited to guests looking for a one-day wine tour from Paris. Of course, if clients plan to stay in the region for longer, we can suggest a wide range of great accommodation, and then pick them up from their designated hotel or B&B. For our Route Des Grands Crus & Beaune wine tour and our Beaujolais wine tour , we always arrange to pick up guests from their accommodation. Should guests wish to visit several different regions for a prolonged stay, we can put together a special itinerary in order to meet their specific requirements. A great combination for a 2 day trip is the  Northern Burgundy & Chablis wine tour combined with Pouilly-Fumé & Sancerre wine tour . The Routes Des Grands & Beaune wine tour is best combined with the  Northern Burgundy & Chablis wine tour or the Beaujolais wine tour . For any other tailor-made French wine tours, we invite you to get in touch with us so that you can benefit from our long experience in organising & running wine tours in France. Hope to see you soon on one of our unique French wine tours.

Nick, can’t emphasise enough how much we enjoyed our time with you in France!   Your knowledge of wine is so expansive.   Your ability to tailor the trip to our interests was very customer oriented.   You planned and scheduled tastings to exclusive vineyards as well as stopping at unknown wineries in a small village to secure a tasting while driving down the road.  Your vast familiarity with the lay of the land, so to speak, as we visited Regional to Grand Cru plots was so appreciated. Your lunch and dinner reservations were one of the highlights of our trip!  This was our second time touring with you and we look forward to another visit as you always provide new adventures! Thanks so much,

“Nick’s knowledge of the Burgundy region, its history and its wine, is unsurpassed.  It is a pleasure to travel with a guide who makes everything so easy and so special.  From the close-up experience of the Clos de Vougeot and the famous Chevaliers de Tastevin to the cellars of Drouhin, Nick’s personable manner, relationships and experience in the wine trade made our trip outstanding.”

What To Expect On Our French Wine Tours

These unique French wine tours are the fruit of over 20 years spent working in both tourism and the wine trade here in France. It is this extensive experience and knowledge which enables us to put together and manage both ready-made and customized French wine tours in Burgundy, Loire as well as Sancerre and the Beaujolais. Our aim is to share with you our deep passion for France and its extraordinary wines, great cuisine, stunning countryside and rich history. Regardless of the French wine tour you decide on, we will liaise directly with you in order to take into account your specific requirements. First and foremost we believe that you should have fun on your wine tour, as after all, you are very likely to be on vacation ! But we also understand that whether you are booking a Chablis, Beaune, Sancerre, or Beaujolais wine tour with us, you will have a desire to learn about French wines and wine-making. Over the course of many years, we have built some very special relationships with the local wine-growers and during the course of your stay, they will delight in sharing their knowledge, whether it is in the cellar discussing the climatic effects on the different vintages or their philosophy on oak aging, or in the vines learning about vineyards techniques such as pruning practices and yield management, or their treatments to protect the vines from different predators. Furthermore, you will also learn a lot more about the fascinating and vast topic of organic, biodynamic and natural wines. Although these French wine tours are designed for serious wine-lovers, we do understand that some groups enjoy a few less visits to wineries and more time enjoying the sights such as historical monuments, markets, and even the odd afternoon spent shopping ! We therefore offer a more « relaxed » version of each trip and you just have to choose from the different options proposed. Our long experience of the regions, and our love of great food enables us to take you to some fantastic places for lunch where you can delight in the great local cuisine, wines and atmosphere. From rustic French bistros to more sophisticated restaurants, your trip with us will be a gastronomic feast ! We work on a « first-come, first served » basis. We remain flexible regarding start dates especially if you have other projects in France. We look forward to you joining us on one of our French wine tours . Santé! The Grapes & Corks Team

The Wine of Pouilly Fumé

In July of 2017 Pouilly celebrated 80 years since the official AOC classification of its 2 wines, the Pouilly Fumé and the Pouilly-sur-Loire. Some 160 wine growers cultivate 1350 ha (3250 acres) of Sauvignon blanc for the Pouilly Fumé and only 30 ha (75 acres) of Chasselas for the AOC Pouilly-sur-Loire, producing two dry white wines which take advantage of the priviliged geographic position of the vineyards which lie exactly half way along France’s longest river, the Loire

The site of Vézelay in northern Burgundy welcomes around a million visitors a year and if the "eternel hill" enjoys a worldwide reputation due to its classification as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, its wines remain a lot less well known.
