Catch outdoor concerts on the weekend from May through October while snacking on pretzel bites with Kolsch beer cheese or smoked whitefish dip with housemade pita chips. This fall, wine country is calling — and it is only a road trip away from Chicago. Napa Valley and Sonoma County in California are typically dream destinations for wine enthusiasts at all levels, but the Midwest has its wine regions. Missouri, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Ohio have all grown table and wine grapes for generations. Common varieties like Riesling, Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Pinot Grigio, as well as French-American hybrids like Vidal, Seyval, Vignoles, and Chambourcin all thrive in the Midwest and can produce a range of sweet to dry wines. In recent years, wine production has become a sizable part of the state’s agricultural economy.

Believe it or not, the first American Viticultural Area was designated in Missouri (not California!) in June 1980. AVAs are designations to help winemakers show consumers where their wine comes from, so consumers could develop their tastes and buy wine from specific regions. Today, there are five AVAs across the Show Me State and over 130 wineries in production. The Buckeye state also has five AVAs, seven wine trails, and over 4,400 wineries that produce both grape and fruit wines.

winery tours near chicago

Before Prohibition banned the production, consumption, and distribution of alcohol in 1920, Illinois was once one of the nation’s largest wine producers. Since 1997, the number of wineries has grown from 14 to over 100, including several urban wineries that can be found within the city limits.

Travelers looking for a weekend adventure that’s complete with majestic views, delicious food, and great vino, load up the car and head to one of these five Midwestern wine regions.

Shawnee Hills AVA, Southern Illinois 5-hour, 40-minute drive

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Blue Sky Vineyard (@blueskyvineyard)

Perhaps the closest wine region for Chicagoans is located in Southern Illinois, just 350 miles south of the city. The Shawnee Hills AVA , established in 2006, is home to a wine trail that consists of 11 wineries. Each winery has reservation requirements but offers flights of their signature sweet and dry wines and even some ciders. In addition to surrounding inns and cabins, there are a handful of vineyards that also have on-site suites that are perfect for small and large groups.

Wineries to visit: Alto Vineyards (Alto Pass), Blue Sky Vineyard , Kite Hill Vineyards

Places to stay: Peachbarn Winery & Cafe , Blue Sky Vineyard , Rock Lodge

August AVA, Missouri 5-hour, 50-minute drive

View this post on Instagram A post shared by AugustaWinery (@augustawinery)

As the first American Viticultural Area established, it’s only right that this area is the one to visit during a Missouri wine experience. Located just an hour south of St. Louis, these wineries also offer delicious seasonal and globally inspired cuisine in addition to their award-winning wines. While visitors can absolutely stay in a St. Louis hotel up the road, Augusta is known for its quaint bed and breakfasts.

Wineries to visit: Augusta Winery , Balducci Winery , Blumenhof Winery

Places to stay: Augusta Haus , H.S Clay House Bed & Breakfast , Lindenhof Bed & Breakfast

Wisconsin Ledge AVA, Door County Wine Trail 3-hour, 54-minute drive

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Door 44 Vineyard & Winery (@door44_winery)

Chicagoans are probably familiar with Door County as an outdoor summer destination. But they’ve got a thriving wine scene as well. The Door County Wine Trail is within the Wisconsin Ledge region and focuses on eight wineries that are on the Lake Michigan Peninsula that make fruit wine and wine from hybrid grapes such as Marquette, Marechal Foch, and Frontenac.

Wineries to visit: Stone’s Throw Winery , Simon Creek Winery , Door 44 Winery

Places to stay: The Lodge at Leathem Smith , Inn at Cedar Crossing , Black Walnut Guest House Bed & Breakfast

Leelanau Peninsula AVA, Michigan 5-hour, 10-minute drive

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Black Star Farms (@blackstarfarms)

Traverse City Wine Coast is home to over 40 wineries that specialize in a range of grape varietals. Fun fact about this region: it sits at the 45th Parallel – which is the same degree of latitude that world-class wine regions like Bordeaux, France, and Piedmont, Italy reside. While a humble brag, to say the least, this placement actually can be very helpful to ripening grapes at their best in both the Leelanau and Old Mission Peninsula AVAs. With so many options for lodging, visitors could choose to stay in Traverse City proper or explore a winery inn on one of the peninsulas.

Wineries to visit: Blackstar Farms , Rove Estate , 45 North Vineyard & Winery

Places to stay: Chateau Chantal , Hotel Indigo , Delmar Traverse City

Ohio River Valley AVA 5-hour, 25-minute drive

As one of the most dynamic wine-making regions, Ohio has seven wine regions – with the Ohio River Valley Wine Trail being the nearest to Chicago. Producing traditional wines from grape varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, this region also does an excellent job making late-harvest wines that are sweeter and more succulent on the palate. To experience the entire wine trail, finding a place to stay in Cincinnati is ideal.

Wineries to visit: Hanover Winery , Vinoklet Winery, Fruitblood , Valley Vineyard

Ideal Charter Bus Reviews

Quotes

We needed transportation for ten of my son’s friends to a paintball party and used Ideal Charter. I had never used them before and really didn’t know anything about them, but their quote for the job seemed reasonable and their response time to my question was the most prompt of any service I looked into (they actually responded to me on a Saturday; everyone else waited till Monday to respond). I couldn’t have been happier with the experience. Tom (the owner?) was personable and courteous on the phone, and even called me the day before (unasked) to confirm the time and location of pickup. He drove the van himself, showed up promptly, got us where we needed to go on time, and was very mellow with a mini-bus full of thirteen year olds. The van was pristine and didn’t have any weird smells like old cigarette smoke or chemically cleaners. I’m always nervous about using new services, but Ideal came through with shining colors and I’d use them again in a heartbeat.

I just wanted to reach out to you regarding our rental of your Coach on Friday, May 1st. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! Everything worked out perfect for our transportation needs on that night. Nick was an awesome driver, and ALL of us on the bus marveled at his driving skills in Chicago ☺ I cannot say enough about Nick being there in a timely manner, his professionalism and courtesy to all of our guests. Renting this transportation made all of our guests more at ease being in Chicago, and not having to worry about parking, directions and being on time for the Rehearsal / Rehearsal Dinner. Again, thank you for a job well done!!

When you think of Chicago, “wine country” doesn’t exactly come to mind. After all, with so many brutal winters to get though, it takes a strong grape to survive this neck of the woods. But while we may not be blessed with vineyards galore, à la Napa, California, or even the variety of soils seen in Walla Walla, Washington, we’re here to assure you that you can still have a good fabulous vino experience in the Toddling Town. In fact, we found 12 wine tasting Chicago experiences that even the biggest connoisseurs of the beverage will delight in. See which ones made the cut—and why they’re so special—below.

Socially Distant Napa Wine Tasting Experiences

wine tasting chicago rpm

1. Rpm Seafood

We’ve got one word of advice when it comes to RPM Seafood’s newly launched Sommelier Experience: Go. Yes, it’s on the pricier side at $225 a guest (there’s room for up to four), but we can honestly say that we think it’s worth every penny. Not only will you get to savor limited wine selections as chosen by the restaurant’s wine director, Richard Hanauer, but each one comes with a perfectly paired (and sized) dish to accompany it courtesy of chef Bob Broskey, who marries unexpected textures and flavors into his menu with verve (think a crunchy potato chip atop a melt-in-your-mouth piece of tuna). The seating is semi-private, making you feel like a VIP, and you’ll have plenty of face time with your sommelier, so you can ask as many questions as you want about the glasses you’re being presented with (each one in its own appropriate vessel, naturally). The best part? The menu changes nighty. While we enjoyed pearl oysters with a citrusy flair, the absolute best Georges Bank scallops we’ve ever had in our life, New Caledonian blue prawn risotto and Maryland black bass, tonight’s offerings include prestige oysters, bigeye tuna with wasabi vinaigrette and Australia Murray cod, for instance, so you’re not likely to have the same experience twice. Not into seafood? Try RPM Italian’s version instead, which has a heavier focus on homemade pastas.

Tuesday through Saturday, 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.; $225, 317 N. Clark St., Chicago IL 60654; rpmrestaurants.com/rpm-seafood-chicago

wine tasting chicago fromagerie

2. The Fromagerie And Tasting Room

Put quite simply, The Fromagerie and Tasting Room is a wine-lover’s dream. This gem of a wine and cheese shop and sampling space in the heart of Andersonville has all the usual trappings, from the rotating meats and cheeses, conservas and jams to the charmingly rustic décor. Its standout feature, however, are the insanely educational wine tastings it offers diners every Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday night. Whether you prefer to tune in virtually on Wednesdays or join the intimate group that gathers in-person on Thursday evenings, you’ll be treated to a class-style learning session about a region of your sommelier’s choice (currently, France and South America, respectively). Complete with a full-on slideshow packed with information about everything from the supplier and the tasting notes to the meal pairings, you’ll take in a ton of information—even if you’re already well-versed in the art of vino. That’s partly because the team members here go out of their way to challenge themselves, presenting lesser-known wine terroirs that aren’t typically touched upon. Upon our visit, for example, the focus was on Uruguay—a region with just one known producer currently shipping to the Windy City. You’ll also benefit from the knowledge of your fellow class-takers, who may pick up on a subtle note of leather in a glass where you had only detected spiciness. And, if all that’s not enough to whet your whistle, there’s always the one-off tasting sessions that happen every Saturday.

Wednesdays, 6. p.m., Thursdays, 6 p.m. and Saturdays, 3 p.m., From $35, 5555 N. Clark St., Chicago IL 60640; uvaechicago.com

wine tastings chicago city winery

3. City Winery

You can’t mention wine tasting in Chicago without mentioning City Winery in the same breath. With two locations to speak of (one at the Riverwalk and one on Randolph Street), the facility has been serving up its own blends in Chitown since 2012, so there’s plenty to try—and to see. We visited the sprawling space on Randolph and were blown away by the vast, open dining rooms (yes, plural), which are aptly decorated with wine bottles and barrels galore, and even more impressed by what lay behind the scenes: namely, the industrial-sized coolers, fermentation vessels and barrels where all the wine-making magic happens. Thanks to the private tastings being offered here, you can take it all in with the help of a vastly knowledgeable guide, who will talk you through the finer parts of wine-making or, should you prefer to get a little more hands-on, you can learn how to produce it yourself with the winery’s blending option . Either way, the interactive element that you’ll get from joining a group tour or the ongoing Q and A and discussion you’ll have with your guide is sure to make for a perfect girls’ day out. And when you’re done? You can take in a little entertainment, since the venue hosts everything from comedians and TV personalities ( The Bachelorette ’s Katilyn Bristowe recently swung by) to music acts galore. Eat your heart out, Sonoma.

Fridays, 4 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays, 12 p.m., 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., $50, 1200 W. Randolph St.; citywinery.com

wine tasting in chicago cooper s hawk

4. Cooper’s Hawk Wintery & Restaurant Esquire Chicago

We get it: Things can get a little… hairy when you’re “tasting” multiple adult beverages on an empty stomach. If you’re looking for a place where you can get your nosh on as well as your sipping, Cooper’s Hawk is your best bet. The meals are not only delicious, but hearty, and top notch for the value—we recommend the restaurant’s version of a surf and turf, which comes with perfectly sized portions and mouthwatering finishes of the classic dish (pistachio-crusted grouper, anyone?). The tasting room is set up in a Napa style, and each sipping session gives you carte blanche to try out seven to eight different glasses with an attendant as your guide. (Pro tip: Sign up for the winery’s membership club to get a free monthly tasting for two.) As for the wines themselves, which feature grapes transported to the winery straight from vineyards in California, Washington and Oregon, they’re a big step up from many you’d find on the grocery store shelves. Whites, like the Cooper’s Hawk sauvignon blanc, present as light and effervescent, while reds, like the Lux cabernet sauvignon, are smooth without a hint of bitterness. While the Oak Street location won’t reopen until March 21, you can still get your fix in the meantime: Plenty of the company’s 47 other locations are ready for dining now (we’re partial to the nearby and equally charming Oak Park venue, which has the most charming gift shop known to man).

No reservations required, From $15, 58 E. Oak St., Chicago IL 60611; chwinery.com

wine tasting chicago ever

It’s no secret that Chicago is a foodie town, so it stands to reason that some of its top (we’re talking two Michelin star top) restaurants would have some amazing wine offerings, to boot. Case in point? Ever. The Fulton Market eatery has once-a-month blind tastings led by wine director and co-owner Michael Muser, during which guests will explore flavors from both the New and Old Worlds. Despite the restaurant’s many accolades, however, there’s nothing pretentious about the way Muser guides the small groups that join him each week through each varietal, with a rotating roster that could take you around the world or delve deep into one particular wine territory in equal measure. You’ll want to book your spot early, however, as these events tend to sell out, and quick.

Saturdays, March 12, April 2 and May 14, 10:30 a.m., $150, 1340 W. Fulton St., Chicago IL 60607; ever-restaurant.com

wine tastings chicago wc winery

6. Wc Winery & 25 Boccé

If you’re a fan of reds , you won’t want to pass up a tasting at WC Winery with the facilities’ own winemaker, Jeff Doornbos. Hosted in a private room with space for up to 10 guests, each private tasting includes a flight of no less than four rouge blends (cab, sangiovese, barbera and syrah), plus a blended 10-year-old port. Add in a few barrel-aged masterpieces and a sparkling riesling, and you’ve got the starting lineup of your very own wine Super Bowl. Good thing there’s plenty of hors d’oeuvres included to go around!

Fridays, 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., $40, 4045 N. Rockwell St., Chicago, IL 60618; wc-winery-com

wine tastings chicago aba

On Wednesdays, you’ll want to sidle up to a spot at the bar at Aba (or the dining room, if you can snag a table), where sommelier Alex Augustine will undoubtedly be hosting “wine Wednesdays.” With pours from rare bottles that will pique the interest of even seasoned winos, each weekly event has an agenda (next week, for instance, guests can enjoy a red blend called Birichino Scylla that hails from the west coast), and you don’t even have to make a reservation to get in on the action (though we’d highly recommend it).

Wednesdays, 302 N. Green St., Chicago IL 60607; abarestaurants.com

8. Wild Blossom Meadery And Winery

If you’ve had your fill of chardonnay, pinots and even rosé, why not try something new? Wild Blossom Meadery and Winery offers daily tastings of mead on the city’s south side. What is mead, you ask? It’s a dry to sweet alcohol that’s made by fermenting honey with yeast that the winery says dates back roughly 8,000 years or so (nbd). For $20, you can choose to try it as a flight of four, on the patio, by a firepit with s’mores (um, yes?) or in an educational session. For $125 per couple, you can even make your own for a brewing class. Prefer the classics? Opt for the winemakers’ class for $149 per couple instead.

From $20, 9030 S. Hermitage Avenue, Chicago, IL 60620, wildblossommeadery.com

9. Winestyles

While many tastings end at four glasses, WineStyles’ weekly events offer up to six samples for the bargain price of $10. Here, regions from around the world are discovered (at least in the culinary sense), allowing you to take a tasty journey across the globe. This week’s destination is Paso Robles, California, with selections being poured from the area’s own Vino Robles Winery.

Thursdays, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., From $10, 6182 Northwest Hwy., Chicago, IL 60631; winestyles.com/norwoodpark

Relatively new to the tasting scene is French Mediterranean neighborhood haunt Le Sud. Each month, wine aficionados gather at the Roscoe Village hot spot to dive into different flavors that span the continents. Selections include reds, whites and bubbles, with hors d’oeuvres pairings from chef Michael Woodhill to accompany their exotic flavors. The cool thing about this one? You’ll leave with a whole lot more than the experience—your ticket price includes three complementary bottles of wine, tasting notes and pairing recs.

Thursday, March 3, 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., $69, 2301 W. Roscoe St., Chicago, IL 60618; lesudchicago.com

11. Picnic Wine & Provisions

You don’t have to spend a ton of cash to have a fun wine tasting experience. For $5 (yes, you read that right), you can hit up this Rogers Park destination to share a glass with other members of the community at a table, on the patio, or, in the summer months, on a blanket, picnic style. In fact, that’s kind of the point: Owner Liz Ahearn does what she can to “[bring] people together to share ideas and get to know their neighbors over wine, food and art.” The menu is sustainably sourced, the company is jovial and the wine is all available to take home by the bottle, with the $5 fee being waived for those who make a purchase.

Thursdays, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., $5, 7301 N. Sheridan Rd., Chicago IL, 60626; picnicwineandprovisions.com

12. Vin312 Winery

Many restaurants got creative in the face of COVID-19, and Ravenswood’s Vin312 Winery is certainly no exception. While it’s now welcoming customers back in for in-person tastings, we can definitely see the continued appeal of the virtual tasting kit winemaker Warner DeJulio has cooked up, which is essentially the perfect date night in a box . Once you purchase it, you’ll receive a link to schedule a walkthrough of the five 2-ounce bottles found inside from DeJulio himself at your convenience (just be sure to book at least a week out to ensure they’re delivered by your desired date). The box also contains tasting notes, a coupon for a future visit and 20 percent off a winery membership. Need more? Upgrade to the full bottle tasting for $149.

Testimonials

Jonathon B was our designated driver for the day and he provided 5 Star service for our group. We completed a mini-tour of Chicago and he was very knowledgable and had a great repore with our group. I would definitely use Infinity Transportation again !!!

On time and professional. Bus was comfortable and clean!

The driver, Akia McKee, arrived on time the morning of our trip, she was courteous and kind, the bus was very clean and warm. Upon pick-up she contacted me to let me know she was there and where/how we should meet her to board the bus back home. There was a lot of pick-up traffic at the event and she parked about 1/2 block away which was very convenient. Everything worked out perfectly!

How to plan a group wine tour?

To plan a group wine tasting tour, you’ll need to make a few key decisions besides the wineries themselves. First decide on dates and times that best suit your group, then you can set group pick up and drop off points. Establish a budget that includes tasting fees, meals, and transportation fees.

How many wineries can we visit in one day?

In order to have a relaxing and enjoyable experience, we recommend visiting about 3-5 wineries on the tour. If your group does not mind spending a shorter amount of time at each winery, you can fit a few more in, but keep travel time in mind while planning.

How much time do we spend at a winery?

How much time you spend is up to you! We recommend you spend about 30-45 minutes at each winery. Spending less time at each winery means you will get to go to more wineries during your tour. Discuss your preferences with your group.

Can you drink wine on the bus?

Though by law buses do allow open containers of alcohol, we ask that you only drink at the wineries, and not onboard the bus. We want to make sure the trip is safe and pleasant for everyone.

Where to Drink Wine in Chicago

Great wine lists abound in this fascinating city. Here are eight places with distinctive lists that stand out.

The motto of Chicago ought to be, “Too much to do, not enough time.”

That’s how I feel whenever I visit. Whether restaurants, architecture, museums or music, Chicago overflows with wonderful options, and that certainly extends to great places to drink wine.

On a recent trip that unfortunately coincided with a biting Arctic blast, I sought out warm refuges with superb food and intriguing wine lists.

I was looking for casual, comfortable places that served full meals and offered lists with a clear personality. I omitted the sorts of classic, expensive Michelin-starred restaurants where you would expect to find extensive wine lists. These eight places stood out as distinctive emblems of Chicago’s singular Midwestern character.

I could have included many more, like Beautiful Rind , a lovely cheese and wine shop where you can pay a small corkage fee to open bottles with cheese and salumi; Easy Does It , an excellent natural wine bar with a modest menu; Bronzeville Winery , a thoughtful wine bar that celebrates its South Side neighborhood; Daisies , a fascinating restaurant with a small selection of Midwestern wines embedded in its list; and other places I loved, like Lula Cafe and Avec . Not enough time.

Here they are, in no particular order.

A bottle of white wine mid-pour into a wine glass on a restaurant table with two paper menus labeled “Dear Margaret.”

Dear Margaret

This French Canadian restaurant in Lakeview looks exactly as I picture a French Canadian place: cozy and warm, knotty wood floors, a bit spare. There’s no place I would rather be on a freezing winter day, though I think I might feel that way any time of year.

The food is soulful, the wine list chosen with care and the hospitality gracious. My cold-weather menu included delicate, oceanic fried smelts; Canadian bacon with a refreshing corn relish and wonderful, housemade bread; a crisp, perfectly seasoned pork schnitzel; and striped bass with brown butter topped with sunchoke chips. To end, what else but Canada’s favorite dessert, an exquisite butter tart .

The wine list is not exhaustive, but it’s hard to go wrong. Every bottle was something I wanted to drink, whether a dry riesling from Forge in the Finger Lakes, a white blend from Luis Seabra in the Douro or a teroldego from Elisabetta Foradori in Trentino. Almost every bottle is under $100. I settled on a focused, gentle 2018 Savigny-les-Beaune aux Clous from Louis Chenu Père & Filles .

2965 North Lincoln Avenue, dearmargaretchi.com .

Cellar Door Provisions

This small, spare, amiable restaurant in Logan Square on the northwest side offers just a few modest yet beautifully detailed dishes on its ever-changing menu and a concise, well-chosen list of natural wines almost entirely under $100.

You might begin with a 2021 Le Rose from Ca’ de Noci in Emilia-Romagna, a light, fresh sparkling malvasia that is so good you won’t want to stop drinking it. That went brilliantly with fried onions tempura-style with romesco sauce and an earthy pig’s head terrine.

We followed that up with a 2021 riesling from Jean Ginglinger in Alsace, a stony, floral wine that was alive in the glass, superb with cheesy gnocchi in a savory ham broth and nutty braised broccoli rabe.

Neither the menu nor the list is exhaustive, but with either, it was hard to go wrong.

3025 West Diversey Avenue, cellardoorprovisions.com .

Monday brunch, as this excellent French bistro in River North calls that day’s midday meal, comes with a bubbly benefit: half-price bottles of Champagne. It has another thing going for it, too. While Obélix looks like a modern spot for hushed business meetings, situated in a nondescript downtown building, it’s actually relaxed and unpretentious, the kind of place business people go to escape uptight offices.

The food is classic French with a few creative touches. A beautifully composed pâté en croûte was made with wild boar and duck, while a generous Lyonnaise salad was topped with a duck egg, crisp duck confit and duck fat croutons. This being brunch, Obélix offered deviations from the standard fare, like merguez served as a hot dog and Korean-style fried chicken on a burger bun, with excellent frites.

The wine list is almost entirely French and contains predictably expensive Burgundies, Bordeaux and other trophies. But it also offers plenty of bottles under $100, including some gems, like a 2020 Brézème from Éric Texier , an excellent syrah from the Côtes-du-Rhône, and a 2019 Domaine de Galouchey Vin de Jardin, a delicious natural Bordeaux. And if you come midday Monday, Champagne is a treat and a great value.

700 North Sedgwick Street, obelixchicago.com .

The Village at Italian Villages

Even if you’ve never been to the Village in the Loop, you most likely know the genre. Sinatra ate there. So did Capone. At nearly a century old, covered with photos of celebrities of the past, it’s the sincere incarnation of the sort of place Carbone was meant to parody and augment.

The wine list, however, is enormous and astounding. You will not find cutting edge Italian wines here, but you will see deep reserves of Italian classics here, including older vintages of Brunellos, Barolos and Super Tuscans, a label coined in the 1980s for top Tuscan wines that did not conform to appellation rules.

The Village is red wine territory, but you might start with a crisp sparkling wine like a 2016 Ferrari Perlé Rosé Riserva, with its mild but pure scent of berries. Where to go after that? I chose a lovely expressive Barolo, a 2012 Renato Ratti Conca, which I thought was a good value at $130.

The unsurprising Italian American food is a mixed bag — terrific beef ravioli served under an ocean of meaty red sauce, and sweet, tender eggplant parmigiana. But veal marsala was bland and muddy. Stick with red sauce and enjoy exploring the list, with upward of 1,200 bottles.

71 West Monroe Street, thevillage-chicago.com .

This sprawling restaurant in the West Loop manages to straddle the Adriatic Sea, blending Italian and Croatian elements in what the chef, Joe Flamm, calls “Adriatic drinking food.” The wine list is wide-ranging, with concentrations from France, Germany and the United States, but the most exciting element is the small selection of Eastern European wines from Slovenia and Croatia.

These might include a lively sparkling refosco rosé from Rodica , an organic winery in Slovenia, or a Vinas Mora Andreis, a fresh, bright, natural Croatian red made of the babic grape, which tastes like a combination of pinot noir and gamay.

These wines go beautifully with Adriatic dishes like burek, a flaky pastry filled with chard and cheeses, grilled clams in a shockingly green herbal sauce, mezzaluna pasta in a bright duck ragù and tender lamb saddle with roasted carrots, full of garlic and herbs and served off the bone like a porterhouse.

Rose Mary is by no means a sedate date place. It’s lively, maybe even boisterous in the best possible way.

932 West Fulton Market, rosemarychicago.com .

Not far from Rose Mary in the West Loop is El Che, an Argentine steak house with a superb wine list made up entirely of South American bottles.

Yes, you can drink inexpensively here, with many wines under $100 like, among whites, a liter of Pipeño Blanco from A Los Viñateros Bravos , a farmer’s blend from Itata in Chile, or an Argentine sémillon from Mendel in Mendoza. But this is an opportunity to try some of the better reds South America has to offer, like a 2020 Concreto malbec from Zuccardi , a superb, minerally malbec, or even splurge on something special, like a 2016 Zuccardi Finca Piedra Infinita for $360.

Reds like these are meant for beef. El Che’s are all cooked over wood coals. Options include a dry-aged strip, which has all the funk and tang you look for in dry-aging, or, if its available, a picanha, a smaller cut like a rump steak. The crisp beef-fat fries are not to be missed, while an endive salad is an archetypal steakhouse salve for the conscience.

845 West Washington Boulevard, elchechicago.com .

Webster’s Wine Bar

This sprawling neighborhood spot with a welcoming vibe is the granddaddy of Chicago wine bars, having opened in 1994 in Lincoln Park and still going strong in its second location in Logan Square.

The wine list, primarily European, is wise, seemingly tempered by years of experience. It resists the temptation to offer a bunch of trophy labels either too young or unaffordable to any but the wealthy. Instead, it’s impeccably chosen, with bottles selected to drink now.

With oysters, I drank an excellent biodynamically farmed 2020 Boissonneuse Chablis from Julien Brocard , combining the seashell character of Chablis with the richness of the 2020 vintage. The food extends beyond classic wine bar fare to include pasta, seafood and a steak frites.

2601 North Milwaukee Avenue, websterwinebar.com .

This small, casual restaurant in Logan Square, practices a considered eclecticism in both its food and its wine. The food combinations and juxtapositions are unconventional with an overriding goal of deliciousness. The same is true with wine.

Consider dishes like sweet, tangy Japanese eggplant, flavored with South Asian spices and served with pita, or okonomiyaki, eggy Japanese pancakes under a pile of greens, a riot of textures and flavors. Chiramonte, a tortelloni-like pasta, is served in a nutty lentil ragù with mint and bright Meyer lemon, a brilliantly balanced dish.

The worldly, beautifully chosen wine list follows suit, with plenty of versatile, refreshing bottles, the vast majority priced at under $100. I particularly enjoyed a fresh, herbal 2021 Sonoma trousseau gris from Jolie Laide , which came alive in the glass, and a graceful crunchy 2022 gamay from Ochota Barrels in the Adelaide Hills of Australia .

3209 West Armitage Avenue, 773-252-0997, giantrestaurant.com .
