Dodge Journey Not Starting: Causes + How to Fix

2009 dodge journey no crank no start

If your Dodge Journey doesn’t start, you’ve found the right article.  Many different issues can cause the problem.  We cover all the likely ones in an order that makes sense when diagnosing the issue at home.

This article is written with the assumption that you are looking for a way to get your Dodge Journey started now, and is meant to provide you with practical advice to help aid in the diagnosis.

Dodge Journey Not Starting

First, is your Journey cranking over at all (the engine spins when you turn the key?  Or is the starter not engaging (you may hear a clicking sound)?

Table of Contents

Engine Not Cranking

Engine cranking, no start.

Here are the most common reasons why the Dodge Journey won’t start when the engine is not cranking .

1.  Battery Cables

Dodge Journey won't start battery corrosion

Start by taking a look at the battery posts.  If they are loose or corroded, it acts as a barrier that can keep the starter from getting the voltage it needs to crank the engine.

If there appears to be green or white on them or the terminals, cleaning them may be what your Journey needs to get back on the road.

Here’s a good article from Napa on properly cleaning a battery terminal.

2.  Low Battery Voltage

2009 dodge journey no crank no start

As your vehicle’s battery ages, its cranking amperage decreases, leaving it with a diminished capacity for starting the engine.  Your Journey needs 12+ volts to start its engine .

You can take your battery to the local parts store or even Walmart and have it tested to see if it still holds a charge.

Alternatively, you can test the battery yourself with a voltage meter.  If the battery is in the vehicle and it’s under 12 volts, it’s likely bad unless your vehicle has been sitting for a while or something is drawing current.

If the battery is dead, it either isn’t storing enough voltage or it isn’t charging enough.

A bad alternator can cause your battery to drain to the point it can’t turn your Journey over. Suspect the alternator if the battery light stays on after charging your vehicle’s battery or jumping it.

3.  Starter Motor

2009 dodge journey no crank no start

The next thing to look at when your Journey isn’t starting would be the starter itself.  When the starter isn’t functioning, it is impossible to start your vehicle.

A bad starter can make a clicking noise, no noise, or it can grind.

When a starter goes bad, they will usually not give you much warning at first. Try repeatedly turning the key. Sometimes you’ll get lucky and it’ll “catch”.

Or, you can beat the starter with a hammer. It really can get that one last start out of it.

Here are the common issues that can cause your Journey to crank but not start.  Your vehicle’s engine needs air, fuel, and a spark to run.

It is highly likely that if the engine is cranking but not starting that it has thrown an OBDII code. Use an OBDII scanner to check and see if the engine has thrown any trouble codes.

The codes will likely be related to the potential issues listed below.  When applicable, we’ve listed the common trouble code(s) associated with the cause.

1.  Low Fuel Pressure

2009 dodge journey no crank no start

If your Journey isn’t getting enough fuel, or any fuel at all, it may have a bad fuel filter or a bad fuel pump .  Without the proper amount of fuel entering the combustion chamber, the Journey will crank but not start.

2.  Ignition Issues

No Start Causes Dodge Journey

One of the most significant issues that will cause a vehicle to crank but not start are ignition issues.  When there is no spark, the engine will not start.  You’ll probably have a misfire-related code such as P0300 , P0301, etc…

Many things, including bad spark plugs, bad coil packs, bad plug wires, computer issues, and more, can cause ignition issues. It’s likely your Journey had a rough idle before

3.  Engine Timing

2009 dodge journey no crank no start

If the engine’s ability to fire the spark plug at the right time is called “timing”.  If the spark plugs are firing at the wrong time, or something has happened to cause the camshaft to no longer be in sync with the crankshaft, your Journey won’t start.

There will usually be OBDII codes associated with timing-related problems, but not always.  P0013 is a common camshaft position-related code.  The crankshaft sensor can go bad as well.  When these sensors go bad, it can be impossible for your Journey to start.

4. Security

2009 dodge journey no crank no start

Most modern vehicles come with smart keys that have electronic protection built in.  This makes it more challenging for thieves to steal them.

There are occasions where this security system will cause the Journey not to start, such as the key fob not working.  You’ll see a security warning when trying to crank the engine, though.

5. Metering

2009 dodge journey no crank no start

MAF or MAP sensors measure the air entering your Journey’s engine.  If one of them has gone bad, it can cause the air-fuel mixture to be off enough to cause the vehicle not to start.

6.  Other Issues

There are a lot of issues that can cause your Journey not to start.  That’s why it is so important to check everything.  Here’s a great diagnostic chart that can walk you through diagnosing why a vehicle won’t start.

Conclusion:  Dodge Journey Not Starting

There are many reasons that your Journey may not start.  Simple tests such as checking the battery with a voltage meter or scanning it with an OBD II scanner can really narrow down your list of potential causes.

2009 sxt fwd 3.5 engine. engine quit while driving. I had a CEL and traction control light came on. It sputtered then stoppped. I was unable to restart car. Towed vehicle home and started diagnosing. The CEL was P0123 for tps over voltage. I reset it and it hasn’t reappeared.  Disconnected cam And crank sensors one at a time to verify wiring and sensors. Threw a code for each. I reconnected and reset code. I Disconnected return line on fuel rail and verified fuel during crank. I also verified TIPM and fuel pump was in working order. I verified timing belt was intact by looking in cam sensor hole while bumping with starter and seeing movement.  I heard of timing belt skipping cogs on these engines but my experience has been a timing belt will break or it won’t. Anyway I’ve tried all know to fix car, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

How many miles?  The belt needs to be changed at 100 K, and a belt can skip if a part wears out but doesn’t break.  The fact that it just quit while driving makes me wonder.

did you check for spark?  Voltage at BCM?  Voltage at PCM?  I read somewhere about corrosion on the bottom of the PCM, but that prevented cranking....

let uss know....

Vehicle has 190k miles. I verified spark. I removed tipm checked all wires and connectors and reinstalled. I removed pcm plugs cleaned and reinstalled. I did not verify voltage at pcm or bcm just a clean and visual. The vehicle will try to go at first crank like only one hole is sparking then crank crank. I threw in towel and towed it to dealer. It has a lifetime powertrain warranty so we’ll see how it goes. If it doesn’t get fixed under warranty I’m going to junk it. Lots of good parts may be coming available.

That warranty is based on doing the minimum manufacturer's maintenance . . . . . if the belt skipped, causing damage and you can't prove a belt change they would almost certainly deny coverage.

Sad

Hope it’s something covered.  You really covered your bases in troubleshooting!  Was the belt ever changed?

Dodge Journey won’t start – causes and how to fix it

Dodge Journey is a reliable road companion, but its a machine with hundreds of interconnected parts, and like any other machine it sometimes fail to deliver normal operation. In this article we go through most common causes of Journey breakdown and how you can fix the problem.

2009 dodge journey no crank no start

The most common causes that hinders normal starting operation of your Journey are dead 12v battery, corrosion on battery terminals, and dead key fob battery. However, bad alternator, clogged fuel filter, broken starter, blown fuse, empty gas tank, immobilizer error, or any fault in the electrical system can also cause your vehicle not to start.

1. Weak Battery

If your Journey’s engine won’t crank or cranks very slowly, then the most likely culprit is weak or dead 12v battery. Investigating more closely and doing a battery voltage test will clarify whether the starting problem is due to the battery. A test can be done to measure the voltage between the battery poles, check the acid level and assess the condition of the starter battery.

If a new car battery has been installed, the battery may not have yet reached its full capacity. There is nothing to worry about. A new battery only develops its full capacity over time.

Test 12v battery

The voltage of the battery on your Dodge Journey can be measured precisely with a multimeter. Before the test, the multimeter is set to the voltage range of the battery and connected to its plus and minus poles. Successful testing of the car battery, i.e. checking the voltage, usually results in values of approx. 12 to 13 volts. Values above 14 or below 11.5 volts require an expert assessment of the condition of the car battery. Because the battery may have a defect with these measured values and must be replaced.

Jump start Dodge Journey

If dead battery is the reason for the breakdown of your Journey, you can easily jump start it using jumper cables and a healthy battery from another vehicle, or using a battery booster if available.

First connect red cable to the positive terminal of your Journey’s dead battery, then to the positive terminal of donor battery. Next connect black cable to the negative terminal of donor battery, then to the bare metal in the engine bay of your Journey. Start the donor vehicle and then your Journey. Remove the cables in reverse order.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is how-to-jump-start-car-illustration.png

2. Corrosion on battery

Corrosion on the contacts of your car battery leads to loss of contact and reduced current flow, which means that your engine can no longer start properly.

To know if your Journey’s starting problems are from dirty battery contacts, you need to investigate them. If you lift the rubber covers over the two battery terminals, you can check the terminals for corrosion. If you discover white deposits or silvery-green deposits, but no further cracks or damage, you do not have to replace the battery, just clean it.

Clean battery corrosion

To clean the battery on your Dodge Journey, you have to remove the pole cables first, which requires no special knowledge, just a little concentration, as the order is very important. First remove the black cable from the negative pole. If the pole clamp is very tight, you can open it with pliers. We advise against using metal pliers, but if you use them, you must make sure that you do not touch any other parts of the body. Next you can unplug the red positive pole cable. Once the battery has been removed from the circuit, you can start cleaning the corroded battery. After cleaning, reconnect the terminals.

3. Weak key fob battery

If your Journey has push start/stop button, then its possible that your vehicle may not start due to weak key fob battery. Don’t worry, you can still start your vehicle – the battery is only used to send the signal for locking/unlocking. If the key fob battery is empty, the door no longer locks or unlocks at the push of a button. The doors must then be opened manually. The immobilizer is controlled by a passive transponder. Passive means, among other things, that the transponder in the key does not need its own power source.

How to start Dodge Journey with dead key fob battery

If you have a model of Journey which only has a key fob with start/stop button and no place to insert a key, then try placing your key fob as close to the start/stop button as you can and then start the vehicle.

2009 dodge journey no crank no start

Tip: You can try starting your Journey with its second key. It will also rule out any other problem with the first key, for example, water damage.

4. Broken starter motor

A starter is a motor for starting the engine of your Journey. The average life of a starter motor is about 100,000 to 150,000 miles, and the life will be shortened if the engine is started more frequently. In any case, since the starter motor also has a limited life, it will break down after using the car for a long time, and if the starter motor breaks down, the engine will not start.

Symptom: When you turn the key to start the engine of your Journey, you will hear a clicking sound, which is the sound of a bad starter motor. And if the starter motor does not work with a healthy battery, suspect a malfunction of the starter.

If the starter fails, it usually needs to be replaced with a new one.

Temporary fix for starter

If the engine does not start due to the starter, the engine may start if you turn the key while hitting the starter motor with something like a stick or metal tool. This workaround is effective when the parts inside the starter are stuck together or the gears are slightly out of alignment.

However, it is possible that the starter is nearing the end of its life, so it is recommended that you have it inspected at a dealer or maintenance shop.

5. Defective alternator

An alternator is a generator that produces electricity. If your Journey’s alternator fails, it will not be able to produce electricity and the battery will not be able to charge. Therefore, even if you think that the cause of the engine not starting is a battery failure and replace the battery, the battery will soon run out and the engine will not start.

Alternators rarely break down. In particular, modern cars have improved performance, so it is said that they will last 200,000 to 300,000 miles. Still, it can break down depending on how you use it, and in the case of a used car, the alternator may be quite old. Don’t let your guard down.

If the alternator breaks down, it must be replaced with a new alternator.

6. Clogged fuel filter

The fuel filter of your Journey does not wear out like a mechanical part, but it gets clogged by dirt and airborne particles and clogs over time. The permeability of the filter drops, and so does the fuel pressure. To a certain extent this doesn’t matter, but if the fuel filter is too dirty, the engine will no longer perform at full capacity and in some instance may not start at all. Cleaning is not possible, you can only change the filter.

7. Fuel pump failure

If your Journey’s fuel pump fails, then the engine won’t start. The pump normally ensures that the necessary amount of fuel is passed from the tank to the injection system of the engine with sufficient pressure.

Before your fuel pump stops working, it usually becomes noticeable: if your car’s engine breaks down from time to time, the car is difficult to start, the engine jerks a little or the engine performance drops, you should have your pump checked.

Wear or contamination of the pump can be the reason for this. If the pump is leaking, a power contact is broken, a line or a pump lever is broken, the fuel pump is usually also noticeable before failure. You can have a defective fuel pump replaced in your workshop.

8. Blown fuse

In rare cases, a blown fuse could also be the culprit in the breakdown of your Journey. Check all fuses in the fuse box essential for starting the engine. But, be careful when lending a hand yourself to the fuse box! The box is under power and repairs or tests should always be done in a workshop.

9. Defective spark plugs

Without functioning spark plugs, the engine will not start. The spark plugs themselves are often not affected by a defect. Instead, plug connections on the ignition system come loose. If only one plug is actually loose, you can fix the problem yourself on site. If a spark plug has failed, it must be replaced in the workshop.

10. Rodent damage

Rodent damage can be another reason why your Dodge Journey won’t start. The animals crawl under the vehicle and bite through cables and wires. In principle, this can affect all vehicle systems such as the fuel supply, the oil supply or the power supply.

The rodent damage can usually be seen quickly by looking into the engine compartment. The damage caused by the rodent bite can be repaired in the workshop. Be prepared for relatively high costs here.

11. Engine failure

Although very rare, but it can also be the cause of the breakdown of your Journey. If a vehicle has an engine failure, then nothing works anymore. It is not uncommon for the driver of a vehicle to be responsible for such damage. Typical causes include tearing of the timing belt, incorrect fueling, insufficient oil, hydrolock, overheating of the engine, or continuous driving in an excessive speed range.

2009 dodge journey no crank no start

Only an experienced mechanic can diagnose engine failure in a workshop.

Use OBD2 scanner for diagnosis

Since Dodge Journey is equipped with on-board diagnostics (OBD), a fault diagnosis can provide initial indications of where the malfunction is located.

To begin troubleshooting, you must first connect the diagnostic tool to your Journey. The OBDII connector is usually located under the dashboard. With the wire connected, you should turn the ignition on. But be careful not to start the engine. Most diagnostic devices then ask for some information about the vehicle. It is important that you enter this 100% correctly, otherwise the result of the search may be falsified. In addition to the vehicle manufacturer and model, you usually also have to type in the engine and vehicle ID number. For exact troubleshooting, always check whether the information is correct.

There are many reasons why your Journey may not start. When looking for the trigger, you should always start with the most obvious cause, the empty battery.

In any case, it is advisable for laypersons to call a breakdown service or a workshop. In the event of a defect, the latter can directly initiate the repair.

My Dodge Journey will not start after driving a short time, and then stopping about 20 minutes, then try to start, press lock unlock wait 10 minutes, car will then start every time.

This is a problem I am having with my Dodge Journey as well. I haven’t had this SUV 3 years and I am still paying on it.

My 2017 Dodge Journey ran fine in the morning yesterday, was totally dead last night – no locks, no dash lights, no power button. Long story short – disconnected + positive cable under hood to reset computer. Put cables back on after 10 min wait – got feeble spark while attaching wires. Entered car, found 4-way flashers indicating on dash. Button was accidentally depressed after morning drive. Charged battery for 1 hour with battery charger. Started fine, but needed to be driven extensively to fully charge 69-month old battery. Buying new battery tomorrow.

My dodge journey 2014 is not starting. It was stripped for overheating but now after the reassemble it’s not starting, VIN initialising and press clutch to start engine are showing on the clock

Sometimes the car would start and other times it would not. Has left us abandoned on multiple occasions. If you placed it in neutral it would start 90% of the time. We finally gave up and parked it while we paid it off. I can't even sell it because I couldn't let someone else get abandoned so I would have to reveal what a POS it is.

I have had this 2009 Dodge Journey for just 1 year and from day one it has been a hassle every other week something is wrong. Was told 3 things were wrong, that's why it wouldn't start. No completely wrong. I had everything fixed and car is still the same. These cars need to be recalled asap. Also shuts off in the middle of the road. The neutral safety switch loses communication with the shifter and all the car does is "click" when you try to start it. Happens randomly and about every 2 weeks. I found by putting the car in neutral it will start.

First it started with my horn. I could be driving and it just starts going off. It could be parked and the horn would just go off. Took the fuse out and it's been out for about 3 year's. The dealer doesn't know anything. Then it started with my window's. They work when they wont 2. For the last year my window's down go down and I can't use my side mirror. Last year I was having problems with my car starting up. So I replaced the battery triple A said it wasn't my starter or alternator. I just replaced the alternator last month. Now after doing that it still doesn't want to start. I have to jump it every 4 to 5 day's. My check engine light is on so I take it to auto zone for a check. They say it's my brake switch. I take it back to firestone who had it for almost 3 hrs. They replaced the switch last year. After3 hrs sitting there he says you have to take it to a dealer. You have 21 codes on your car that we can't fix. I have airbag codes brake codes wire codes. On top of that the back up camera works when it wants. Recall the whole car it's not safe.

This problem started the first week I had the stupid car. It wouldn't start!! I've had issues with this before with other vehicles with factory security systems so that's what I figured it was. "New to me" car, ok, I can deal with it... this time. Unhooked the battery for a couple of hours to reset the system... Not the easiest thing to do in these cars. I think the engineers sat down and said 'how can we make this engine compartment so complicated the average person struggles to even get the battery out!' We have now had issues with it not starting more than 2 dozen times. Had it looked at least 3 different times and the shop could never figure it out. Neutral start seems to work, but I question how long that will last... DON'T EVER BUY A 2009 DODGE JOURNEY!! THIS IS JUST ONE OF THE MANY ISSUES I'VE HAD! AND I'VE ONLY HAD THE THING SINCE SEPTEMBER 2016! The dealership isn't kidding when they say you're buying "as is".

Took the vehicle in due to not starting after a handful of attempts. Eventually it would turn over. The dealership did the diagnostic and no issues popped up when they plugged in their machine. Sounds to me like it is an issue if nothing shows up. So the person at the dealership said bring it in next time this happens. It happened the next morning and happened at random but way too often. The dealership didn't seem to have a fix and I have already put too much money into the vehicle for it not to be fixed.

Update from Nov 29, 2017 : after a period of time of having to put my Journey in neutral to start it. Eventually it came to a point where I could only start it by jumping the car I was able to get the vehicle to the dealership just in time for my Journey to completely die on me and come to find out the alternator went bad and killed my 7 month old battery in the process. After that my Journey has been fine, but if your vehicle gets to the point where you have to jump start it bring it to a mechanic right away to avoid the cost of having it towed. My Journey wouldn't even work with the key fob it was so dead. I was told sometimes an issue like like will mess with other things in your vehicle. Like the lights or the radio...... My radio would reset itself constantly and my window would stall on me making it look like an electrical issue. Also I had my starter replaced too I think it is the alternator that was the culprit though.

It all started the very next morning after we brought the car home from the dealership, I woke up to go to work and it wouldn't start. We called the salesman and he told us that it was due to the car sitting on the lot without being driven for months and that once we started driving it, it would be fine. Hours later we checked on it, and it started right up. This happened daily for three days. This time the salesman suggested that it was probably a bad battery. We took it back to the dealership, they replaced the battery. We didn't have any issues with it again until a couple of months later. Once it happened again, we knew that if we left it alone for a while, it might start as it did before. So we left it alone overnight and the next morning it started. This became a pattern over the next two years, but it only happened sparingly (Not daily as it had when we first got it) so we dealt with it because every mechanic that we took it to couldn't figure out the problem and said that they would need the vehicle to be brought to them while the issue was happening or they would need to try to duplicate the problem. But miraculously, by the time the car was towed to them, it would start right up with no issues. Which makes it hard for them to duplicate the issue when there appears to be none. We've dealt with this issue for two years. The most significant time was when we were stranded with our one month old in the freezing cold temperatures of January! The car would not start in the coldest part of the winter and we had to sit inside of it and wait for a ride. Our baby got sick and was hospitalized for THREE WEEKS with pneumonia! It was a TERRIFYING experience! I will NEVER buy another CHRYSLER or DODGE again!

I to go to work one morning out to leave & it wouldn't start, only click as I turned the key over. The more I tried the more frustrated I became, then I decided to get out & try to start it with the remote & it started as if nothing had occurred. So I thought maybe it was the battery so got a new one -- it continued. Okay, thought it was the was the starter -- got a new on & it's still happening. Stopped to get gas & it totally refused to start I had to have it towed back to the last place that fixed it, thinking maybe it was their negligence of course it started for them, went to the dealership wonder of wonders started for them as well. It is presently in front of my house! DISGUSTED!!

After reading all the complaints in this section I definitely was feeling your pain ....changed the starter, the solenoid, the battery...... finally they changed the Range Selector(according to my mechanic it is a sensor attached to the transmission which sends a wireless signal to the starter.... but being faulty the starter was not getting the message that the car was in park).......diagnosed it by saying when it happens(the NOT starting part)immediately try to start it in neutral and if it started then the Range Selector is the issue.....they changed that part and it HAS started everytime since

We are in our mid seventies and we feel this has been " elder" abuse. It has caused nothing but anxiety, stress and MAJOR frustration! We also have had numerous Dr. Appointments in Saskatoon which is 200 km from our residency and we could not use our vehicle we had the expense of hiring someone to take us there. We had plans on going to the west coast and southern Saskatchewan to visit our family and the week before we were going the car wouldn't start again. Off to North Battleford again and left it there until we returned from the coast which was May 13/2016. Same old story. We also incurred another expense of having to fly to the west coast!

I bought this journey i should have returned it the next day. Before i left the dealership it wouldnt start. They thought it was the battery it wasnt. It was the starter. Coming back from the dealership (rabeauxs auto sales in lafayette, louisiana) the very next day the breakes locked up on the passengers side. My wife called me to tell me.{ by the way i had bought a service warrenty at the dealership forthe premium policy which was suppose to cover everthing but didn't for the amount of $2700.00}. But they said the warranty was not in effect til after 30 days. But wasnt told to me at the dealership until i tryed to use it at a repair shop in my home town 110 miles from dealership. The dealier did pay for that . Then about 5or 6 days later a metal water line broke. Called the warrenty people again, they said it wasn't covered until the 30 day period.Called dealership again but theyDIDNTpay for that it cost me $.340.00 dollars out of my pocket.then the tie rod ends needed to be replaced because the steering was shaking real bad. Called dealership again they paid for that because it was wittin the 30 day period they knew again the warrenty wouldn't pay. Warning to those of you who buy these warranties they DO NOT GO IN EFFECT UNTIL 30 DAYS AFTER YOU BUY THE CAR OR TRUCK. that means the dealership is responsible for the repaires but somthings they still woun't pay for. Thats the sad part. the dealer should have paid me back that $340.00,but they refused too.

I purchased a 2009 Dodge Journey in March 2015. It gave me no issues until after I completed the key FOB recall in August 2015. Since then, it would randomly not start. It was in and out of the dealership several times and the following parts were replaced, all of which were covered under the extended warranty I purchased with the vehicle: fuel injector on Oct. 9, a new battery on Oct. 29, 2015, a new starter on Nov. 16, 2015, a leaking overflow container on Nov. 24, 2015, the TIPM was replaced on April 11, 2016, and most recently electrical wires and cables on June 7, 2016, which hook up to the starter. I called Chrysler Headquarters on or about May 2 to report these issues and I received VERY poor customer service. I was told that my vehicle is too old and has too much mileage for them to do anything for me. The Journey has had episodes almost every day, sometimes more than once a day, of not starting since I got it back last week. The dealership told me when it does act up, to put it in neutral, which has been successful in getting the vehicle to start. They are taking it back on Monday to replace yet another part that they hope will finally be the answer to this ongoing nightmare, but I’m not getting my hopes up. If we weren’t in an upside-down loan, we would have traded in the Journey a long time ago. It is not a reliable vehicle—luckily I haven’t been stranded in a remote location at night, but it doesn’t seem right that I should have to resort to taking that chance. I’ve never had so many issues with any other vehicle I’ve owned!

I bought this car 6 mo ago. Had this problem from day one, they replaced the battery, gave me the run around. Finally had it towed to a Dodge dealership, they replaced the 2 recalls, seem to work for a few months. Had to have it towed again, when they got it, guess what??? It started right up. They finally called and said they found the problem, the TIPM, only bad thing it cost over $1,000 to fix. I paid the $200, for the test, now I have to play Russian roulette again until I can find a way to get the money. I'm 70 yes old and I have to take my little granddaughter to and from school, and grandson to and from work, my daughter just had 2 neck surgeries in the last 8 weeks, so I'm at my wits end, thanks for letting me rant and rave !!!!! Don't feel better though !!

Update from Jan 25, 2016 : So, the car miraculously started this morning so I took it straight to my mechanic and told him the issue I discovered from others here on this site. He looked at the starter wire and found that it was way to weak and small of a harness wire leading to the starter. In addition it was corroding. He had to revamp the wiring to the starter with heaver wire and connectors. Cost $205.

My car has been doing it as well 2009 journey. For a year and half. I have replaced the battery, starter and still happens. Found this on car gurus while trying to help my granddaughter with the same problem. She also has replaced every thing and still the same thing happens, she lives in a Washington where it rains a lot so this makes sense. Any way here is what I found, The cause is definitely the neutral safety switch. I have a 2009 Dodge Journey and I have had the same problem for months now. Where it will start just fine one day then the next it will fail to start. I have actually been stuck somewhere because my car has failed to start. When your car will not start, turn it on, push your break in, and put the gear in neutral. Once it is in neutral, start your car. This should allow your car to start. If it starts, then you know that the problem is for sure the neutral safety switch. The neutral safety switch is not a very expense part. Anywhere around 20-60 Dollars. In most models, they have the neutral safety switch in the transmission. Dodges, Jeeps, and Chryslers have them on the bottom of the transmission. Which is clearly not smart because water and what not gets inside the neutral safety switch very easily, which causes the malfunction. If you are handy with tools or knows somebody that can fix it for you, there are youtube videos that are very specific and helpful and actually, step by step, show you how to change it out. It is so simple that the people who call themselves "professional mechanics" forget about it or just want your money and keep you coming back for more. This is a notorious problem with '08/'09 Journeys. Unfortunately Dodge, nor the dealers have identified the root cause. Dealers will start by replacing the WIN (wireless ignition) module, then the starter, followed by relays, the ELV module, and finally send you on your way. Soon you will stranded with a NO START / CRANK INOP problem again. There is no real solution identified... ...and that's a travesty. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

We all have, or will have this problem. The ground cables are a problem. Remove the cables from the stud on the spring tower on the drivers side. when you remove the outer cable you will notice that it is grounded to a crimp lock nut with only 3 small points of contact surface. I used a file to take enough material off the nut for a full circle of contact. next you will notice a dry and hardened anti-corrosion substance. clean this off the stud and inside the threads on the nuts. Next you will notice that the inner cable (to the trans axle housing) is grounded to a painted surface on the spring tower. This will work if the nut side of the terminal is brushed clean. Also remove the end of the cable from the housing and brush the white powered corrosion from the terminal. I also ran a new cable.(your option). Wou can now use a spray anti-corrosion treatment or have it done during your next scheduled maintenance. My engine even cranks over faster. Hope this helps someone. if it does, please pass it on..

I am a experienced mechanic. I am having the same issue with a customer of mine. 2009 Dodge Journey 2.4L Im coming in on the back end. The customer already had the Battery, Starter, Alternator, and compressor replaced, only to have the same issue. After conducting a few test, we found out that the vehicle startes with the serpentine belt detatched, which leads me to believe there is a voltage issue and there is too much load on the crank for the starter to turn effectivley. I will continue to test for wiring malfunction but my next step would be to locate the starter ground and trace it back hoping to find a defective sensor. My last resort would be to remove the ECU and have it flashed at the dealership. If anyone can locate a wiring diagram for the starter that would be greatly appreciated. I hope I was helpful and I will post any of my findings.

I had this problem also. The ground cables on the drivers side spring tower have a very small contact area on the crimp lock inner nut. also the anti corrosion treatment was preventing proper contact on the stud and nut threads. I repaired mine by using a file on the nut (crimp) to obtain a full circle of contact area. I also had white powdery corrosion on terminals. thoroughly clean with a wire brush. I have had no more problems. Good luck. I had this problem also. This has started to happen to my 2009 Journey R/T. I have narrowed it down to 2 things: either the sensor that detects that the car is in PARK is faulty, or its a alarm problem. Many times when I try to start the car and it just "clicks", I take it out of Park and put it in neutral and back in Park and it starts right up. Either that or lock it and unlock it with the buttons on the key a couple of times and then it will start... strange but true!

Starting issues kept occuring intermittently for me, battery tested great, no solution from dealer twice, a friend got in and started in neutral, took back to dealer and asked about this, their solution was a computer flash upgrade for $25, I am doubtful this will fix it but cheaper than the other replacements, we will see what happens....

If it only clicks, you probably have either dirty connections that don't allow sufficient voltage to the starter to engage the solenoid, or a undercharged battery. If dirty connections are the problem...make sure they are all free of corrosion and well snugged. It's worth noting here....this can be the problem, even though lights, etc. are working. If a undercharged battery is the culprit, a charge should get it functioning, but the question remains, why did the charge drop? At this point, might be a good idea to have the alternator output checked at auto parts store. Many will provide this service for free. Also have a load test done on the battery to make sure it isn't failing. Good luck!

2009 Dodge Journey, A mechanic said the engine and would be 2k to fix. So for piece of mind, I changed the alternator, starter and battery. The alternator a few months ago and the starter and battery just this week. Car turns over but sounds like no spark to start the engine. Going back to the drawing board. If anyone knows something, let me know. Thanks

Had one in today with same problem, checked everything including ground on strut tower and relays, no luck. Then I found a thread where guy found it. Move the wire harness around, jiggle it, the harness next to the airbox that goes down by top of engine. Move it around, car will start. There's a bad wire in that big fat harness.

17 Exciting Things to do in Moscow

Written By: Linda Voltaire

the very best things to do in moscow

Visiting Russia? These are the top 17 things to do in Moscow to help you plan your trip.

If the western world has New York City , the first great metropolis on the eastern side of our planet is Moscow. A huge city with a complicated and impressive history, Moscow gets a bad rep over Russian politics – but that doesn’t make it any less impressive. Capital to the largest country in the world, Moscow takes the grandeur of its standing very seriously.

This is a place where luxury is king and where opulence takes a front seat in every aspect of life. The buildings are grand and imposing, the parks are luscious and enormous, and even the subway stations look different in Moscow than anywhere else in the world.

Best Things to do in Moscow, Russia

Walking around Moscow is also going through the tumultuous history of the 20th century, which had Russia as one of its main protagonists. There are fascinating remains of these times everywhere in the former Soviet capital, from the gorgeous Seven Sisters skyscrapers to the Orthodox cathedrals that were closed for the better part of a century.  Still, Moscow is also a completely modern city, with a vibrant social and party scene, incredible restaurants, and some of the most luxurious hotels in the world.

After living in Russia’s capital as an ex-pat for four years, I got the privilege to experience not only the main attractions in Moscow but also the everyday life in this huge city and quickly found my sweat spots off the beaten tracks! So here is my list of my top 17 things to do in this exciting metropolis!

Attractions in Moscow

When visiting a famous city like this one, it’s a must to go through the most iconic landmarks first. Moscow has plenty of those, most of them in the center of the city, which is very well-planned for tourists.

1. The Red Square, Kremlin & Surrounding Area

moscow tourist attractions | St. Basil’s Cathedral

No place tells the story of Moscow’s power in the past century the way the Red Square does. This is where the biggest political meetings in the USSR occurred for many decades, and you can feel the power on each step.

Here, you’ll also find the historic museum at the entrance, showcasing the decades of history behind this iconic landmark. The Lenin Mausoleum, perhaps the most famous resting place in the world and home to the remains of the former communist leader, is also here.

On one side of the Red Square you’ll find the Kremlin, the fortified complex that now hosts the presidential residence. This is also home to the most iconic of all Moscovite landmarks: St. Basil’s Cathedral, a 16th-century marvel of colors. This is the best spot to take a selfie and show the world you’ve reached the Russian capital!

  • Get your Kremlin Skip the Line Tickets and Kremlin tour here.
  • Free cancellation up to 24-hours in advance of the tour.

2. Bolshoi Theatre

moscow things to do | bolshoi theatre

You can easily spend a couple of days just exploring the Moscovite city centre, and the Bolshoi Theatre should be your second stop. Walk past the Red Square and then head to the nearby Bolshoi Theatre, one of the oldest and most renowned houses of opera and ballet on Earth.

Visit for the impressive early 19th-century architecture, but if you’re seeing a ballet performance, make sure you book between 3 and 6 months in advance! I can strongly recommend this as it is a truly unique experience!

  • Book a private 2-hour tour of the legendary Bolshoi Theatre.
  • See the presidential box reserved for tzars, watch a rehearsal and skip the lines through a separate entrance.
  • Free Cancellation up to 24-hours in advance.

3. Luxury Shopping at GUM and TSUM

russia moscow sites | GUM

While many might think of Moscow as the sad place with the long bread queues from the USSR days, it’s been quite the capitalist haven for a while.

If you’re up for some shopping, you’ll find one of the biggest luxury malls in town, TSUM, right behind the Bolshoi and GUM, at the red square. GUM is the most famous department store in town, where you’ll find luxury everywhere and all high-end brand.

All in an imposing late 19th-century building with lots of history, worth a visit just for the design, its bridges and the glass roof even though you are not up for shopping!

4. Christ the Savior Cathedral

things to see in moscow | christ the savoir cathedral

A newer addition to the gorgeous Moscovite cathedrals and my grandeur neighbor during my years in the city Don’t let the young age of this building fool you. After the perestroika in the early 90s, the newly revived Russian Orthodox Church received permission to build a cathedral on this site. They did the location honors and built the largest temple of the Christian Orthodox Church.

The façade is as grand as you’d expect, but it’s the inside that will mesmerize you, with its domes as tall as the skies in bright gold and gorgeous paintings and decor! Bring a shawl to cover your hair to adjust to the local tradition.

Head to the back of the cathedral and you will find one of the most photographed bridges in Moscow, the Patriarshiy Most. This is the perfect spot to get a good view and photo of the cathedral but also to see the Kreml and Gorky Park from a distance. Or why not just enjoy a moment watching the river and its boats!

  • Get around Moscow with ease using the Hop On Hop Off boat and Bus ticket. 24, 48 or 72-hour tickets available.

5. Gorky Park

tourist attractions in moscow | gorky park

Cross the river and head to Gorky Park along the Moscow river. The most famous green area in town, similar to New York ’s Central Park and the weekend hangout for locals. There are many beautiful parks in the city, but if you’re only visiting for a few days, this is the unmissable one!

With fair attractions to entertain children, beautiful artificial lakes and gardens, and lots of outdoor activities, it’s a lovely place to relax. A place of rest in the middle of the metropolis. The area in front of the New Tretyakov Gallery & the Muzeon Park of Arts is actually one of my favorite oasis as a bit more quiet and peaceful than Gorky itself.

Why not spend some time in the museum to get a great tour of Russia’s history through art or just enjoy the art exhibition outside where local artists spend their weekends.

6. River Cruising

tourist attractions points of interest

One of the best ways to experience Moscow is from the Moscow River. There are many stops for the boats and one is just next to Gorky Park. See the city from another perspective – and turn the ride into a romantic one by taking the evening cruise. Moscow is magic during the night.

If you’re looking for a truly luxurious experience, take the Radisson Blu cruise – or the Erwin for a delicious seafood dinner. Both stop at Gorky or at the luxury Radisson Royal Hotel, set in one of the Seven Sister’s skyscrapers.

  • We use Get Your Guide when booking city tours and they offer a River Sightseeing Cruise seeing all the main tourist attractions in Moscow

7. Metro Hopping

unusual things in moscow | train station

First inaugurated in the 1930s, the Moscow subway system is one of the oldest in the world, and certainly the most beautiful. Started under Stalinist times, each metro station is dedicated to grandeur and oozing personality.

Visiting the subway stops is an attraction in and of itself, and Komsomolskaya, Mayakovskaya, Kropotkinskaya are my favorites. Those surrounding the Red Square are also mesmerizing – in general, these are kind of like underground palaces.

Most of the signs at the Moscow Metro now have Latin letters, so it’s very easy to get around!Unfortunately, the trains are not as beautiful and pleasant as the stations but still, this is a true Moscow experience.  Take a guided tour of the 9 most beautiful Metro Stations including the award-winning art deco station. See more details here.

8. Arbatskaya & Artsy Moscow

place to visit in moscow | arabatskaya

Novy Arbat Street is one of the most touristy areas in the city, with lots of shops and cafés directed at visitors. When you walk a little beyond, you’ll find a different part of town, where the hip scene thrives because so many artists live in the area. Just follow the small streets with fewer tourists!

9. Moscow State University View

moscow unique things to do | university

In his effort to create a grander Moscow, Stalin had seven skyscrapers built in different parts of town; they’re called the Seven Sisters. The largest of these buildings hosts the main building of the Moscow State University, one of the most prestigious colleges in Russia – and the one with the best view.

Although this is a little outside the city centre, the sight from above is more than worth it, with the nearby fountains and park and then the whole of the city behind them.

10. Russian Market

where to shop in moscow | russian market

If you love to visit markets wherever you go, Moscow has one of the most impressive ones in the world – the Izmailovsky. You can easily take the metro here and feel like you’ve been transported to another time.

This place was first built in the 16th century and retains the look of an old fairytale, with a lineup of colorful old castle. A lovely local experience beyond the confines of the bustling metropolis, where you can also try some delicious Russian barbecue.

Here, you’ll find beautiful souvenirs at great prices.

Off The Beaten Track Moscow

Once you’ve covered the most touristic spots, Moscow still has plenty to offer – and the places below will also be full of locals! Moscow is a city for hipsters, full of trendy and arty spots where you can literally feel the creativity oozing! So for some local vibes, I would strongly recommend my sweat spots below!

11. Patriarshiye Prudy

moscow unique things to do | patriarshy prudy

This is my favorite area in the entire city! While Moscow is generally a very noisy metropolis, Patriarch Ponds is far quieter, yet such a vibrant place. This is a very hip and trendy area making you think you are rather in Paris than in Moscow. Here the streets are narrow and full of chic eateries and clubs to see the local crowd.

A little bohemian and with an air of peace you won’t find anywhere in the city this is a great spot to spend an afternoon with your thoughts.

12. ArtPlay

museums in moscow | artplay

Barely 15 minutes away from the city center you’ll find the artsiest Moscow district: ArtPlay. For decades, this block was a factory, but it was renovated to become a hub for the arts not too long ago.

Now, you’ll find it’s full of exhibitions, showrooms and art schools – and some of the most creative people in town. Writers, painters, and young hip people use ArtPlay as a rendezvous, and you can feel the creative energy here. The industrial design with modern interior decoration is also a feast for the eyes!

13. Shopping Local Designs

moscow sightseeing | shopping district

If you’re into design, both international and local, you’ll find lots of cute things at Patriarshiye Prudy. Department store Podium Market is also a great spot for shopping, as a department store everywhere in town, with lots of local and international brands. There’s one in the Four Seasons Hotel next to Red Square. My favorite Moscow mall is Tsvetnoy Central Market, a cool spot with great brands, lots of inspo, and even a cute café!

14. Moscow City

modern skyscrapers of moscow

Like many other great capitals of the world, for the past few decades, Moscow has hosted a super modern area full of modern skyscrapers – Moscow City. With a completely different vibe than the rest of town, it’s like a mini Dubai, with lots of impressively tall glass buildings. Here, you’ll find the best rooftops in towns, such as Ruski and Sixty they are perfect spots for dining or enjoying a glass of wine with a view. There are also a relatively new shopping mall with lots of international brands called Affimall!

Wine, Dine, and Party in Moscow

view of moscow from ruski

Gone are the gloomy Moscow days – cold as it might be in the winter, Russia’s capital is a place for the senses. Great food and drinks abound – and the clubs are hot, too!

15. Where to Eat in Moscow

where to eat in moscow

Moscow is a great metropolis where people love to dine out, and there are endless options for delicious food. The flavors are as diverse as you’d expect from a big city, with options of fine dining and little hipster eateries.

  • For traditional Russian flavors, I can’t recommend Café Pushkin, Dr. Zhivago, and Turnadot enough.
  • When looking for international cuisines, Italian is always the way to go, and my local favorite is Probka.
  • Fine dining is best done among the clouds at White Rabbit, with European flavors.
  • As for the hip spots, you can spend a full day just eating around trendy places, from burgers to Asian fusion.

More Dining Options

  • Patriarshiye Prudy offers a lot of small and classy spots with cool concepts, like breakfast restaurants I Love Cake and Fresh.
  • For dinner, I love the NYC experience of Saxon & Parole, and the wonderful trendy Pins, with its delicious food and drinks.
  • For delicious Asian food head to CutFish.
  • Lastly, there’s a recent revival of food markets in Moscow, offering lots of great choices of international flavors at affordable places.
  • Don’t miss out the Vietnamese food stand at the Danilovsky market, and everything at Usachevsky!

16. Rooftopping

things to do in moscow russia | city scape

Big cities deserve to be seen from above, having a cocktail among the clouds. These are my recommendations for rooftop bars in Moscow.

  • As I mentioned in the Moscow City section, Sixty & Ruski are two of my favorites, overlooking the newest part of town.
  • White Rabbit and its fine dining is also a lovely place for a fun dinner looking down on Moscow.
  • O2, in the city center, has an advantage above all others: amazing views of the Red Square.
  • Buono, above the Radisson Royal Hotel, might be the most romantic rooftop hotel in town, with its candlelit setting.
  • Also on the Radisson stands the Mercedes. It’s a luxurious and posh experience with delicious cocktails.
  • The Sky Lounge offers a peculiar experience, mixing an old Soviet building with futuristic additions.

17. Moscow by Night

must do in moscow | moskva river

Party the night away! The city is full of bars everywhere, but there are some areas where you’ll find more than others.

  • Patriarshiye Prudy has lots of hip and small clubs and great bars, including the super fun private club Clava, which has a great vibe and people from all walks of life.
  • For more hipster style bars, Red October is the place to go.
  • Streak is a summer favorite, with a lovely terrace to catch a beautiful sunset – plus, their mozzarella bar is delicious.
  • At night, Red October lights up with clubs everywhere, including the cool rooftop one Gipsy.
  • Jagger is also a great spot during summer with a more relaxed vibe in garden setting.
  • For the traditional Russian luxury experience, go to SohoRooms, a whole other world including all-night go-go dancers.

There are so many things to do in Moscow at night and during the day, you definitely need several days to explore this exciting destination.

Moscow is a must-see city, a city like no other ! I hope you will enjoy this Russian metropolis as much as I did!

These places look so awesome! Moscow is truly a beautiful city

Very good article, you have explained so nicely. Russia has always been a part of history and its good to know about much more about architecture and other things, wish i could see the inside of façade

Thanks for sharing such a nice article. You have very beautifully explained everything that one need for a trip to Moscow.

Nice article. Love the hidden gems and graffiti art, would love to visit Artplay. Thanks for a comprehensive guide to Moscow!

Moscow is a city where the past and the future live side by side. Here we can find everything from medieval fortresses and Soviet monoliths to glass skyscrapers and innovation centers.

Your article is good and meaningful .

Thanks for sharing about ArtPlay district, we didn’t know about it and it looks amazing 🙂 Hopefully there’ll be a second time in Moscow, we visited last May and really liked the city!

Wonderful stuff! I’ve been to Moscow, but not properly – it’s a long story lol!

Anyhoo, my next thing is to fly from Berlin to Moscow and then travel from there to Beijing via the Trans-Mongolian / Trans-Siberian train. Now, if only I could just find the time …!

I hear Moscow is very beautiful at night. I hope to get out there one day. A friend of mine went to St. Petersburg and had a great experience. Despite all the tension we see on the news with Russia and other Countries like the U.S. I wonder what the sentiment is with Russians and foreigners visiting their country for tourism. Especially Americans.

that looks like quite a beautiful place. 🙂

In Transit: Notes from the Underground

Jun 06 2018.

Spend some time in one of Moscow’s finest museums.

Subterranean commuting might not be anyone’s idea of a good time, but even in a city packing the war-games treasures and priceless bejeweled eggs of the Kremlin Armoury and the colossal Soviet pavilions of the VDNKh , the Metro holds up as one of Moscow’s finest museums. Just avoid rush hour.

The Metro is stunning and provides an unrivaled insight into the city’s psyche, past and present, but it also happens to be the best way to get around. Moscow has Uber, and the Russian version called Yandex Taxi , but also some nasty traffic. Metro trains come around every 90 seconds or so, at a more than 99 percent on-time rate. It’s also reasonably priced, with a single ride at 55 cents (and cheaper in bulk). From history to tickets to rules — official and not — here’s what you need to know to get started.

A Brief Introduction Buying Tickets Know Before You Go (Down) Rules An Easy Tour

A Brief Introduction

Moscow’s Metro was a long time coming. Plans for rapid transit to relieve the city’s beleaguered tram system date back to the Imperial era, but a couple of wars and a revolution held up its development. Stalin revived it as part of his grand plan to modernize the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s. The first lines and tunnels were constructed with help from engineers from the London Underground, although Stalin’s secret police decided that they had learned too much about Moscow’s layout and had them arrested on espionage charges and deported.

The beauty of its stations (if not its trains) is well-documented, and certainly no accident. In its illustrious first phases and particularly after the Second World War, the greatest architects of Soviet era were recruited to create gleaming temples celebrating the Revolution, the USSR, and the war triumph. No two stations are exactly alike, and each of the classic showpieces has a theme. There are world-famous shrines to Futurist architecture, a celebration of electricity, tributes to individuals and regions of the former Soviet Union. Each marble slab, mosaic tile, or light fixture was placed with intent, all in service to a station’s aesthetic; each element, f rom the smallest brass ear of corn to a large blood-spattered sword on a World War II mural, is an essential part of the whole.

2009 dodge journey no crank no start

The Metro is a monument to the Soviet propaganda project it was intended to be when it opened in 1935 with the slogan “Building a Palace for the People”. It brought the grand interiors of Imperial Russia to ordinary Muscovites, celebrated the Soviet Union’s past achievements while promising its citizens a bright Soviet future, and of course, it was a show-piece for the world to witness the might and sophistication of life in the Soviet Union.

It may be a museum, but it’s no relic. U p to nine million people use it daily, more than the London Underground and New York Subway combined. (Along with, at one time, about 20 stray dogs that learned to commute on the Metro.)

In its 80+ year history, the Metro has expanded in phases and fits and starts, in step with the fortunes of Moscow and Russia. Now, partly in preparation for the World Cup 2018, it’s also modernizing. New trains allow passengers to walk the entire length of the train without having to change carriages. The system is becoming more visitor-friendly. (There are helpful stickers on the floor marking out the best selfie spots .) But there’s a price to modernity: it’s phasing out one of its beloved institutions, the escalator attendants. Often they are middle-aged or elderly women—“ escalator grandmas ” in news accounts—who have held the post for decades, sitting in their tiny kiosks, scolding commuters for bad escalator etiquette or even bad posture, or telling jokes . They are slated to be replaced, when at all, by members of the escalator maintenance staff.

For all its achievements, the Metro lags behind Moscow’s above-ground growth, as Russia’s capital sprawls ever outwards, generating some of the world’s worst traffic jams . But since 2011, the Metro has been in the middle of an ambitious and long-overdue enlargement; 60 new stations are opening by 2020. If all goes to plan, the 2011-2020 period will have brought 125 miles of new tracks and over 100 new stations — a 40 percent increase — the fastest and largest expansion phase in any period in the Metro’s history.

Facts: 14 lines Opening hours: 5 a.m-1 a.m. Rush hour(s): 8-10 a.m, 4-8 p.m. Single ride: 55â‚˝ (about 85 cents) Wi-Fi network-wide

Buying Tickets

  • Ticket machines have a button to switch to English.
  • You can buy specific numbers of rides: 1, 2, 5, 11, 20, or 60. Hold up fingers to show how many rides you want to buy.
  • There is also a 90-minute ticket , which gets you 1 trip on the metro plus an unlimited number of transfers on other transport (bus, tram, etc) within 90 minutes.
  • Or, you can buy day tickets with unlimited rides: one day (218â‚˝/ US$4), three days (415â‚˝/US$7) or seven days (830â‚˝/US$15). Check the rates here to stay up-to-date.
  • If you’re going to be using the Metro regularly over a few days, it’s worth getting a Troika card , a contactless, refillable card you can use on all public transport. Using the Metro is cheaper with one of these: a single ride is 36â‚˝, not 55â‚˝. Buy them and refill them in the Metro stations, and they’re valid for 5 years, so you can keep it for next time. Or, if you have a lot of cash left on it when you leave, you can get it refunded at the Metro Service Centers at Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 25 or at Staraya Basmannaya 20, Building 1.
  • You can also buy silicone bracelets and keychains with built-in transport chips that you can use as a Troika card. (A Moscow Metro Fitbit!) So far, you can only get these at the Pushkinskaya metro station Live Helpdesk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations. The fare is the same as for the Troika card.
  • You can also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

Rules, spoken and unspoken

No smoking, no drinking, no filming, no littering. Photography is allowed, although it used to be banned.

Stand to the right on the escalator. Break this rule and you risk the wrath of the legendary escalator attendants. (No shenanigans on the escalators in general.)

Get out of the way. Find an empty corner to hide in when you get off a train and need to stare at your phone. Watch out getting out of the train in general; when your train doors open, people tend to appear from nowhere or from behind ornate marble columns, walking full-speed.

Always offer your seat to elderly ladies (what are you, a monster?).

An Easy Tour

This is no Metro Marathon ( 199 stations in 20 hours ). It’s an easy tour, taking in most—though not all—of the notable stations, the bulk of it going clockwise along the Circle line, with a couple of short detours. These stations are within minutes of one another, and the whole tour should take about 1-2 hours.

Start at Mayakovskaya Metro station , at the corner of Tverskaya and Garden Ring,  Triumfalnaya Square, Moskva, Russia, 125047.

1. Mayakovskaya.  Named for Russian Futurist Movement poet Vladimir Mayakovsky and an attempt to bring to life the future he imagined in his poems. (The Futurist Movement, natch, was all about a rejecting the past and celebrating all things speed, industry, modern machines, youth, modernity.) The result: an Art Deco masterpiece that won the National Grand Prix for architecture at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. It’s all smooth, rounded shine and light, and gentle arches supported by columns of dark pink marble and stainless aircraft steel. Each of its 34 ceiling niches has a mosaic. During World War II, the station was used as an air-raid shelter and, at one point, a bunker for Stalin. He gave a subdued but rousing speech here in Nov. 6, 1941 as the Nazis bombed the city above.

Take the 3/Green line one station to:

2. Belorusskaya. Opened in 1952, named after the connected Belarussky Rail Terminal, which runs trains between Moscow and Belarus. This is a light marble affair with a white, cake-like ceiling, lined with Belorussian patterns and 12 Florentine ceiling mosaics depicting life in Belarussia when it was built.

Transfer onto the 1/Brown line. Then, one stop (clockwise) t o:

3. Novoslobodskaya.  This station was designed around the stained-glass panels, which were made in Latvia, because Alexey Dushkin, the Soviet starchitect who dreamed it up (and also designed Mayakovskaya station) couldn’t find the glass and craft locally. The stained glass is the same used for Riga’s Cathedral, and the panels feature plants, flowers, members of the Soviet intelligentsia (musician, artist, architect) and geometric shapes.

2009 dodge journey no crank no start

Go two stops east on the 1/Circle line to:

4. Komsomolskaya. Named after the Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, this might just be peak Stalin Metro style. Underneath the hub for three regional railways, it was intended to be a grand gateway to Moscow and is today its busiest station. It has chandeliers; a yellow ceiling with Baroque embellishments; and in the main hall, a colossal red star overlaid on golden, shimmering tiles. Designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an homage to the speech Stalin gave at Red Square on Nov. 7, 1941, in which he invoked Russia’s illustrious military leaders as a pep talk to Soviet soldiers through the first catastrophic year of the war.   The station’s eight large mosaics are of the leaders referenced in the speech, such as Alexander Nevsky, a 13th-century prince and military commander who bested German and Swedish invading armies.

2009 dodge journey no crank no start

One more stop clockwise to Kurskaya station,  and change onto the 3/Blue  line, and go one stop to:

5. Baumanskaya.   Opened in 1944. Named for the Bolshevik Revolutionary Nikolai Bauman , whose monument and namesake district are aboveground here. Though he seemed like a nasty piece of work (he apparently once publicly mocked a woman he had impregnated, who later hung herself), he became a Revolutionary martyr when he was killed in 1905 in a skirmish with a monarchist, who hit him on the head with part of a steel pipe. The station is in Art Deco style with atmospherically dim lighting, and a series of bronze sculptures of soldiers and homefront heroes during the War. At one end, there is a large mosaic portrait of Lenin.

2009 dodge journey no crank no start

Stay on that train direction one more east to:

6. Elektrozavodskaya. As you may have guessed from the name, this station is the Metro’s tribute to all thing electrical, built in 1944 and named after a nearby lightbulb factory. It has marble bas-relief sculptures of important figures in electrical engineering, and others illustrating the Soviet Union’s war-time struggles at home. The ceiling’s recurring rows of circular lamps give the station’s main tunnel a comforting glow, and a pleasing visual effect.

2009 dodge journey no crank no start

Double back two stops to Kurskaya station , and change back to the 1/Circle line. Sit tight for six stations to:

7. Kiyevskaya. This was the last station on the Circle line to be built, in 1954, completed under Nikita Khrushchev’ s guidance, as a tribute to his homeland, Ukraine. Its three large station halls feature images celebrating Ukraine’s contributions to the Soviet Union and Russo-Ukrainian unity, depicting musicians, textile-working, soldiers, farmers. (One hall has frescoes, one mosaics, and the third murals.) Shortly after it was completed, Khrushchev condemned the architectural excesses and unnecessary luxury of the Stalin era, which ushered in an epoch of more austere Metro stations. According to the legend at least, he timed the policy in part to ensure no Metro station built after could outshine Kiyevskaya.

2009 dodge journey no crank no start

Change to the 3/Blue line and go one stop west.

8. Park Pobedy. This is the deepest station on the Metro, with one of the world’s longest escalators, at 413 feet. If you stand still, the escalator ride to the surface takes about three minutes .) Opened in 2003 at Victory Park, the station celebrates two of Russia’s great military victories. Each end has a mural by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who also designed the “ Good Defeats Evil ” statue at the UN headquarters in New York. One mural depicts the Russian generals’ victory over the French in 1812 and the other, the German surrender of 1945. The latter is particularly striking; equal parts dramatic, triumphant, and gruesome. To the side, Red Army soldiers trample Nazi flags, and if you look closely there’s some blood spatter among the detail. Still, the biggest impressions here are the marble shine of the chessboard floor pattern and the pleasingly geometric effect if you view from one end to the other.

2009 dodge journey no crank no start

Keep going one more stop west to:

9. Slavyansky Bulvar.  One of the Metro’s youngest stations, it opened in 2008. With far higher ceilings than many other stations—which tend to have covered central tunnels on the platforms—it has an “open-air” feel (or as close to it as you can get, one hundred feet under). It’s an homage to French architect Hector Guimard, he of the Art Nouveau entrances for the Paris M é tro, and that’s precisely what this looks like: A Moscow homage to the Paris M é tro, with an additional forest theme. A Cyrillic twist on Guimard’s Metro-style lettering over the benches, furnished with t rees and branch motifs, including creeping vines as towering lamp-posts.

Stay on the 3/Blue line and double back four stations to:

10. Arbatskaya. Its first iteration, Arbatskaya-Smolenskaya station, was damaged by German bombs in 1941. It was rebuilt in 1953, and designed to double as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war, although unusually for stations built in the post-war phase, this one doesn’t have a war theme. It may also be one of the system’s most elegant: Baroque, but toned down a little, with red marble floors and white ceilings with gilded bronze c handeliers.

Jump back on the 3/Blue line  in the same direction and take it one more stop:

11. Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). Opened in 1938, and serving Red Square and the Kremlin . Its renowned central hall has marble columns flanked by 76 bronze statues of Soviet heroes: soldiers, students, farmers, athletes, writers, parents. Some of these statues’ appendages have a yellow sheen from decades of Moscow’s commuters rubbing them for good luck. Among the most popular for a superstitious walk-by rub: the snout of a frontier guard’s dog, a soldier’s gun (where the touch of millions of human hands have tapered the gun barrel into a fine, pointy blade), a baby’s foot, and a woman’s knee. (A brass rooster also sports the telltale gold sheen, though I am told that rubbing the rooster is thought to bring bad luck. )

Now take the escalator up, and get some fresh air.
