Lima to Buenos Aires: Deserts & Dancing Tour

Lima to Buenos Aires: Deserts & Dancing

A really good mix of hiking, culture, and exploration. I really enjoyed this tour, as it covers so many places that aren't otherwise accessible on your own. Arguable, Inca Trail was the highlight, but there was so much more. Ballesta Islands, Lake Titicaca, the Yungas Road in Bolivia, steak in Salta, etc etc. I enjoyed Bolivia much more than I expected (the museums in Potosi were world class). You have free time to explore the big cities such as La Paz on your own if you choose. Only downside were some inflexibility in restaurant choice. Overall a good trip I'll remember for a long time.

What a great experience. The rain pour out, my husband lost his cell phone so, the moods become rocky but Jonathan, our tour guide, managed intelligently to assist us with our stay. He is very professional, knowledgeable on what he is doing, fluent in English and very flexible with the situation. He is also a very high tech that carried a high end binocular to have a better vision from a distance. The people at the lodge are very warm and friendly people. The wild pig they named Pumba, greeted us like she is a dog. She is so adorable and very sweet village pet they raised. We got attached to Pumba because of her personality. She greeted all guest that arrived, how cool is that! And, The food... exceeded our expectations. They fed us a three course meals 3 times a day. It's plenty, delicious, healthy and authentic. We wished we have more days to stay. We got spoiled in this lodge! Thank you so much for the memory and experience!

5 Days Amazon Lodge Cuyabeno Reserve Tour

5 Days Amazon Lodge Cuyabeno Reserve

Now this was exactly what I was looking for. And everything went smoothly first being able to talk with Daniel that is the tour operator in Ecuador and he was very kind with us very nice with us making sure everything‘s OK. I went with my mother from Florida and my uncle from New York City. And me and Aspen Colorado. We all met in Miami and then made it out to Quito stayed a couple days before arriving at the bus which you mean at a local hostel. The bus was there we actually decided since it only cost $10 at the hostel we arrived a few hours earlier than the bus so we can take a shower and take a nap since we were just touring around. Then on the way to the jungle the bus stop two times for bathroom breaks and get something to snack on or drink most people were sleeping on the bus. Then in the morning when we arrived in the reserve there was a little outside restaurant and a store where they provided free breakfast for us with this tour which is really cool it’s more of a traditional indigenous sore Ecuadorian breakfast with eggs and rice and I forgot I think it might have been chicken. Then somebody from the lodge was looking for us and welcomed us saying that we’re waiting for the motorized canoe from the lodge to return with other guests and then we checked into The reserve office as were checking into the reserve area so they know we’re in the reserve. Then we travel to hours down the river with our guy that spoke English very well. And immediately the tour started right from leaving the bridge starting to look for birds, snakes, sloths. All kinds of animals snakes and spiders oh and dolphins. Now it does rain in the jungle it’s obviously a rain forest. So make sure you have like rain gear to cover you up your clothes so they don’t get wet. Once we arrived a couple other people from the lodge was waiting at the dock to welcome us and lunch was ready immediately and we were so surprised that the food was like eating in a restaurant. All good food quality food. Not from like some kind of cheap restaurant this would be plates that you are you got a good restaurant and the chef Freddy this guy can cook so good. He can make 15 different meals and they’re never the same and they have fresh juices. And some people are wondering how the quality of food is they do bring the food in from a local supermarket a few hours away down the river and they have to drive to the grocery store to get food they don’t use things that were in the reserve because you don’t know if there’s bacteria‘s so we had all healthy quality food. Then there was morning activities afternoon activities and evening activities. Canoeing down the river with paddles and some non-motorized boats. Always doing something different. The staff is very kind when you get back from your afternoon activity and you go back to your room for a little bit they make you every bed they clean everything up. And don’t worry about it if anything is going to be stolen. The people are very trustworthy. Obviously they don’t want bad reviews. Well maybe not only they don’t want bad reviews they’re good people half of the people live in indigenous communities in the jungle and the other half are from nearby cities like the tour guide and they stay with you from the time you wake up to the time you go to sleep eating all the meals with you so you always feel comfortable and safe in the jungle. Monkeys right there in the base camp. That or wild in the trees and the birds make sure you bring a power bank with you for your telephone or if you need to take pictures they have strict rules and regulations in the reserves from the department of tourism the ministry of like the reserve. So they put it on the generator 30 minutes in the morning so that they can cook breakfast and it gives everybody power and the same with lunchtime and then at nighttime four hours of electricity. And water in the showers is very hot you have to turn the cold water on to make it not so hot and three of us were able to take literally 15 to 20 minute hot showers each with no problem every single day it’s like the hot water never runs out. And the cook I should call him a chef to because that’s more than just some line cook. He’s a very good cook and they’re all really nice staff people. And some of them get together at night time and I’ll sing on a guitar Spanish music. Maybe for 20 to 30 minutes or so which is trust me long enough after a long day in the jungle. They were thorough with everything they do and safety is a major priority. Then the very last day when we were leaving we arrived the dock before every other launch giving us time to get something to drink to make sure everything was in order the buses were already there waiting for us as we were going back to Keita on the bus stopped in a small place where we can actually eat lunch. I don’t know it was an amazing trip I don’t know what else to say besides everything went smoothly everything was safe the people were kind. I did notice tell other people that booked with other lodges or companies. I did overhear people saying how they wish they had better communication and they didn’t have anybody greet them as we were greeted some of the people from the other larges they look a little bit more serious but the people at the store all smiles and like they’re really happy. And make sure you tip them good. Do you know stuff like this they deserve a very good tip honestly. From everything that I saw these people go out of their way to make sure you were comfortable. It’s well worth it I wouldn’t keep looking for something better you already found it I had a really affordable price

Alejandro was simply the BEST and made each and every day of our week long tour exceptional. He chose unbelievable accommodations that were unique and memorable and he knew the business owners and locals everywhere we went! Alejandro kept us on schedule so we could maximize our time there but remained flexible to meet the needs of our wanderlust and spur of the moment desires! We felt completely safe and "pampered" at all times. He is extremely knowledgeable of all things Ecuador, it's people, culture and environment.

We stayed 4 nights at Jamu Lodge and had the most incredible time. The lodge staff were fantastic, and our guides were knowledgeable and really sharp eyed to spot the wildlife! We're so glad to have booked through Rebecca Travel who were extremely helpful when our Tame flight was cancelled on the morning of our trip - they immediately contacted the lodge, and arranged for our tour to begin a day later and helped us to rebook all our travel. We were really impressed by the quick and expert help!

Amazon Tour Reviews

An amazing but very full on adventure. From day one, right through to the end it was very eventful, busy, challenging but most of all extremely rewarding. We had no expectations we we began the tour but our expectations were exceeded. We were blessed with mostly great weather, amazing scenery, fabulous fellow travellers and fantastic and very supportive guides.

This trip was truly the trip of a lifetime. Jesus really submerges you into the Peruvian culture and the three days you’re there, you are nonstop with activities. Our guide was so knowledgeable and he made the trip. His family grew up in the rainforest so he was able to tell you the history about most things there (the families, the foods, the animals etc). We went during rainy season, and still had a wonderful time. If you’re looking for adventure, meeting wonderful people, and being in nature - this trip is for you!

Amazon FAQs

Thinking about an Amazon trip? Here’s a list of frequently asked questions we often hear from our guests. Visit our Amazon Vacation Planning page for in-depth Amazon travel tips.

For many reasons, the best time to visit the Amazon is from June – November. During this time, the Amazon Rainforest experiences its dry season – meaning the water levels are lower, allowing access to forested areas and greater opportunities for land-based exploration excursions. However, it’s important to note that as the largest rainforest in the world, the Amazon experiences approximately 250 days of rain a year, spanning all months. Despite having varying seasons, like the “wet” season (December – May), travelers should expect a few hours of light rain at any point in the year. The rain is what continues to keep the rainforests and its rare flora and fauna alive.

Yes, traveling to the Amazon Rainforest is safe! In Brazil’s main center for visiting the Amazon – Manaus, you’ll always have guided activities with expert naturalist guides to help you navigate the jungle. Outside of town make sure you have all recommended vaccinations, according to your doctor and that you take a Malaria prophylaxis. Although along the Rio Negro, where most travelers go, there are very few mosquitoes!

All Amazon lodges and cruises offer jungle walks guided by local professionals to get to know the vegetation. Discover the importance of medicinal plants, spot vibrant macaws and parrots, and learn to identify the calls of rare animals. While listening to the sounds of the animals in the jungle is a common experience, actually spotting the fauna can be difficult. Travelers may consider the Pantanal wetlands for wildlife spotting, as it is less dense than the Amazon. Piranha fishing is also very popular. Local guides can also take you to different areas where other animal species can be seen, such as the pink river dolphins or macaws. Alligator (jacare) spotting at night is one of the most fascinating activities.

In general, the Amazon Jungle is not dangerous for travelers! Animals in the Amazon are not aggressive, as there is plenty of food available. Even the aforementioned “alligator” is a “caiman,” the peaceful cousin of the crocodiles you have heard about from Australia and the Florida Everglades. Your guide will always make you aware of toxic plants or spiders. Most guides are from the local communities, knowing well the healing properties of the plants that surround you. The one element to be aware of is Malaria: there is no vaccination, rather prophylaxis you take before traveling to the Amazon and stop taking as soon as you depart.

If visiting the Amazon in Brazil, you’ll get to the Amazon rainforest mostly by flying into Manaus, or for a more remote experience, by flying into Alta Floresta, with its luxurious lodge, or into Tefé for the most remote experience possible. In Peru, the main access points are Puerto Maldonado, Manu and Iquitos. In Bolivia, it is Rurrenabaque, Coca in Ecuador and Leticia in Colombia.

No – There are different areas with different flora and fauna. The main difference is caused by the altitude. Most of the Brazilian part is at sea-level or only slightly above it, whereas in Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia, the rainforest sits on higher ground. The higher, the less dense the fauna is. Therefore, for example, if you are interested in birding, you would prefer the Peruvian Rainforest, as, due to the fauna being less dense, it is easier to spot birds. The Peruvian Amazon also offers some of the most luxurious river cruise ships such as the Aria. The Brazilian Amazon Rainforest offers travelers a wide range of lodges and cruises. Embark on a large cruise ship such as Hurtigruten or Iberostar, or a small, intimate cruise such as the Tucano. The Ecuadorian Amazon boasts Yasuni National Park, home to millions of species of plants, birds, insects, and mammals.

Typically, you would stay at a lodge or cruise along the river. It depends on what kind of experience interests the traveler(s). The advantage of a lodge is that your stay in the Amazon Rainforest can begin at any time, whereas cruises have set departure dates. While cruises offer plenty of departure dates, it can be challenging to be on a strict schedule. On the other hand, the advantage of a river cruise is that you see a vast extent of the rainforest, with different animals and vegetation, without needing to turn back after each excursion. Cruises also tend to include a stop at local communities where you can experience and learn about the lives of Amazonian locals. Whether you experience the Amazon on a cruise ship or nestled in a lodge, you’re sure to have a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

What is the best time of year to visit the Amazon Rainforest?

The Amazon Rainforest in Peru can be visited year-round. In the Northern Amazon like Iquitos , the best time to visit is during the wet season from December–May. The high waters allow for more boat excursions bringing you up closer to animals. In the Southern Amazon like Puerto Maldonado, the best time to visit is during the dry season from May–September when hiking trails are less muddy.

Will there be wifi at my Amazon Lodge?

Most Amazon Lodges do not have consistent wifi on their properties. The Lodges we recommend are eco-friendly and may only have electricity for certain times of the day. While you may be able to access the internet during your Amazon tour, plan to disconnect.

Which part of the Peruvian Amazon is best to visit?

Puerto Maldonado is the best place to tour the Amazon Rainforest in Peru because the tourism infrastructure there is well developed. Lodges are well maintained, tour guides are well-versed in nature and English and accessibility is easy with daily flights from Cusco and Lima. The best time to visit Puerto Maldonado also lines up perfectly with the best time to visit Machu Picchu.

What vaccinations do I need for an Amazon Rainforest tour?

Although not required to visit the Peruvian Amazon, yellow fever, hepatitis A, typhoid and measles are all recommended vaccines by the CDC . Malaria medication is also recommended for remote parts of the jungle. However, all travelers should be up-to-date on their routine vaccinations before visiting. You should talk with your doctor before travelling.

Is the Peruvian Amazon safe?

The Peruvian Amazon is a safe place to visit with violent crime virtually unheard of in touristic areas. The greatest threat to your health comes from bug bites — like mosquitoes carrying yellow fever or malaria — or improperly handled food. You can protect yourself by getting all the recommended vaccinations, wearing insect repellant and by eating at reputable establishments. However, travelers should avoid going to remote parts of the Amazon where illegal mining and logging are prevalent.

The best Peruvian Amazon adventure tours are:

  • Pacaya-Samiria camping tour with overnight camping in the Iquitos jungle.
  • Multi-day lodge program in Puerto Maldonado with piranha fishing, nature hikes, and canopy towers and walkways.
  • Multi-day program with Treehouse Lodge with adventure activities during the day and treehouse hotel rooms built at varying heights above the forest floor.

How bad are the mosquitoes in the Amazon? And what can I do to protect myself from mosquito bites on my Amazon Rainforest tour?

Mosquitoes are present year-round in the Amazon Rainforest. Depending on the season, the severity of mosquitos changes: the dry season tends to have lower levels of mosquitos while the wet season has more. Using insect repellent with approximately 25 percent deet is the best way to protect yourself. Regularly reapply repellant to your skin or spray your clothing as rain and sweat can wash it away.

What should I pack for an Amazon Rainforest tour?

  • Sturdy hiking shoes
  • Waterproof sandals or flip flops
  • Personal medications
  • Waterproof case for phone/camera
  • Fast-dry clothing
  • Water bottle
  • Journal for jotting your thoughts and observations
  • Water-resistant jacket that is lightweight and easy to put in your day pack.
  • Rain poncho
  • Sweater or hoodie for the evening
  • Two bathing suits/swimming trunks
  • One or two pairs of shorts
  • One or two pairs of hiking pants for rugged rainforest walks
  • One or two long sleeve shirts (100% cotton is great for the jungle)
  • Two to three short sleeve shirts
  • Three pairs of cotton socks

Personal care items:

  • Hand sanitizer
  • Sunblock of at least 15 SPF
  • Insect repellant with DEET
  • Toiletries like toothbrush, toothpaste, face wash etc.
  • Contact lenses and extra pair of eye-glasses if you wear glasses.
  • First aid kit with bandages, aloe, antibiotics, pain reliever, etc.

Forest gear:

  • Flashlight or headlamp with extra batteries
  • Swiss army style knife
  • Sun/ rain hat
  • Plastic bags (zip lock bags and a larger trash bag)

How long should I visit the Amazon Rainforest for?

Four days is the recommended amount of time to spend in South America’s Amazon Rainforest. Most lodge itineraries have the first and last dates as arrival and departure days, respectively. This makes a 4-day/3-night program the most complete experience with two full days of jungle tours.

Is an Amazon cruise better than a jungle lodge experience?

An Amazon cruise is recommended for those looking to visit the Amazon River in luxury. High-end cruise options like Delfin are a must if you have the funds. A lodge experience, on the other hand, offers experiences ranging from rustic to resplendent. Lodges have expansive properties and often provide unique opportunities to spot animals. Both experiences are unique.

What’s the easiest way to get to the Amazon Rainforest from Lima and Cusco?

Flights operate daily from Lima to Iquitos and Puerto Maldonado. The flight from Cusco to Iquitos only operates three times a week. There are daily flights, on the other hand, from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado.

Puerto Maldonado is also accessible by road, but the bus journey is 11–12 hours from Cusco. Iquitos is not accessible by road.

The guide and boat pilot were very flexible, changing the plan to keep us safe on the water and letting us be quick or take longer in various places. Lovely lunch, plenty of choice. Clean toilets everywhere. They answered all questions and gave us local information We're staying with relatives out of town but the driver waited happily with us in the car so we were dry, until our Uber arrived. Great day. We felt involved and looked after. Read more Written 6 April 2024

My friend and I were both amazed and would eagerly return for another exploration. Our tour guide, Collin, was exceptionally professional, friendly, and most importantly, trustworthy, which made us feel completely safe throughout the journey. We gained a profound understanding of the Amazon's nature and culture, thanks to the well-organized and thoughtfully scheduled tour. We wholeheartedly give it a 10/10 rating! A big thank you to both the welcoming staff in the lodge we stayed at and our tour guide Collin for such an enriching experience. Read more Written 6 April 2024
  • WiltonManorsGreg 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Not to miss Inclusive half-day excursion from Porto deManaus What a great excursion, but the tour company under-described the day’s activities. We enjoyed the small, and fast, boat with only 12 passengers. We were pleasantly surprised to be offered the opportunity to swim alongside the dolphins(but not stated in the tour description) Many of our fellow passengers on the cruise ship’s excursion did not even see dolphins. Holding our hands in the water as the boat floated from the dark waters of the Rio Negro to the muddy Amazon provided a great surprise! The cultural stop was ok. The lunch provided a large selection of locally prepared dishes. I enjoyed the boardwalk through the forrest, a bonus was seeing monkeys up very close, and the lily pond overlook. the most un-advertised part of the tour was the chance to fish for a pirarucu fish (in a stocked pond) I’m not a fisherman, but those fish were large and pulled quite a bit trying to get the bait off my line!! I do have a complaint: The start time was not well-communicated; group members arrived two by two starting at 8am, we didn’t leave until 9 am. Read more Written 26 March 2024

  • 881TerryH881 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Awesome Amazon sights This tour was a large group of people (60) but it was very well organized and it kept on track the whole time. The stops were first rate. Our lunch was much more than we expected and the Indigenous village had a very good program. The dolphin swim was amazing with at least 6 dolphins returning over and over. My only caution would be to those with mobility issues as it was a bit difficult getting up from the boat to the village. I would highly recommend this tour. Read more Written 3 March 2024

  • beckykK588GC 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Did not meet expectations, very badly organised Unfortunately, this tour did not meet our expectations from the description at all. We were in a large group (initially around 20 people, split into approx 10 each), and these groups changed daily so the guides were never sure who had seen what, or even who everybody is and what tour they are on! This created the additional concern that none of the guides knew about any medical conditions or dietary requirements that had been mentioned during the booking process - Vegetarians were not catered for. Our guide spoke very limited English (despite booking an English speaking guide), so we did not feel that we got as much out of the experience as Portugese speakers. There was not enough room at the lodge for everybody, so we stayed in hammocks for 2 nights, packed too close together due to the group size. We only got a room on our 3rd night by being fairly firm about it. Mosquito nets were provided but were generally too small and had many holes. We also felt that there was not much respect for the environment - guides were dropping cigarette butts, and we heard that guides were climbing trees to catch sloths for tourists to hold whenever the sloths were low enough. There was also quite a bit of litter around the lodge, and toilet paper around the camps. Read more Written 27 February 2024
  • soyfermedellin 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Good but not to organize I contacted this agency via Whatsapp to book 2D1N at Ipanema Lodge + ayahuasca ceremony and the communication was very scarce and little. I had many doubts before making my reservation given their poor attention to detail. On the day of my activity they were late for me and communication was still very poor. Once the experience began, everything was amazing. To be honest, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay in the jungle. The guide David and Ever were super nice and I really appreciate that they take care of nature, respect it and teach us about its wonders. The stay is very modest, don't expect an amazing hotel...live and enjoy that you are in the middle of the Amazon and you have a roof to sleep under. Meals are sufficient and fully covered. Be prepared for plans to change as weather, light and jungle conditions can change itineraries. On my return after my stay in the jungle I had to cancel the ayahuasca ceremony because the organization and lack of seriousness that the agency gave to this activity was terrible, they had scheduled me for another day, they did not know how to give me the instructions to prepare me to do the ritual, they did not know who was going to pick me up, they did not know how many people would do it. I asked for my refund and they told me they would not do it...even taking into account that the times they coordinated themselves did not allow me to arrive on time for the ceremony. That bothered me a lot but I decided to keep the good experience in the middle of the Amazon. If you want to do activities with this agency, I recommend that you go for the adventure without stressing about the itinerary, schedules or conditions and just live it. They are good but not to organize Read more Written 26 February 2024

  • Y0rkie77 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Wonderful day in the jungle. We had a fabulous trip. We had read some reviews suggesting pick ups being an issue and not having enough time at the various waterfalls but for us, we had no issues, at least none due to Amazing Tours. Some of the other guests were inconsiderate and late but that was not this companies fault. We loved the trip, had enough time at each stop and despite the rest of our group being Portuguese speakers, Miguel (our guide) gave us individual commentary and explanations in English which was great. We would recommend this tour. Read more Written 7 February 2024

What Travelers Say About Their Amazon Rainforest Tour

The birding was fantastic, made better by the extremely helpful bird guide. We have birded in Central America, Indonesia, Africa and all over the US and we think he was the best bird guide we have ever had! We had an amazing time on this trip! Additionally, information provided by AdventureSmith was perfect! Taylor, our Adventure Specialist, was always available for any questions and very responsive to our requests.

I was thoroughly pleased with my trip and AdventureSmith. Leslie was terrific in helping me plan my trip. Her advice was perfect, and she responded to my questions in a timely manner. Sacha Lodge was excellent. It was well run and kept you busy all day long. The naturalist guide & our native guide were terrific. The towers and canopy walk and the tree tower were my favorites.

This was an amazing trip filled with experiences and now, memories. AdventureSmith was helpful, professional and experienced every step of the way. If we ever take an "adventure trip" again, AdventureSmith will be my first contact to make. Thank you for....everything!!

The spontaneous whale watching, nearly every day at some point, made the trip memorable. That the captain could slow down and maneuver in an area to extend our viewing is not something that could happen on an aircraft-carrier-sized cruise ship.

The overall trip experience was extremely good. Every one of our guides were great and had good knowledge of their specific areas. Loved the Napo Wildlife Center and in particular our, guide, Remigio, was very personable.

La Selva was beautiful and remote. Staff was VERY helpful and friendly. Superior guide, Paul. Food 5 star. Very interesting wildlife and vegetation. Loved dealing with Arielle.

We had an amazing time on this trip! All of the reservations were as stated and everything was on time. The lodge was beautiful and the food was absolutely awesome! The staff at the lodge was friendly and efficient. The bird guide was one of the BEST we have ever had, and we have birded in many places around the world! We were very happy with the accommodations, including the stay in Copa. Everyone we met was pleasant and the trip was very smooth.

Accommodations Review

How they were able to provide the style and comfort in a jungle lodge was absolutely amazing! The beds were comfortable, the accommodations were beautiful and the wildlife was everywhere!

Meals Review

5 star meals on every occasion. They even made a birthday cake for my wife's birthday! It was hard to believe the quality of food made in the middle of the Amazon rain forest!

Crew & Guides Review

Our bird guide, Rodrigo, was FANTASTIC! He was highly knowledgeable of all the wildlife in the area and could find birds by habitat, sight and sound. He was knowledgeable about every species and was very enthusiastic in providing the best experience for us! We have birded in Central America, Indonesia, Africa and all over the US and we think he was the best bird guide we have ever had! He was so well spoken and a pleasure to be around!

Itinerary Review

The birding was fantastic, made better by the extremely helpful bird guide. His knowledge was fantastic and he spoke English very well! The number of species of birds was quite amazing and the lodge itself was beautiful with the best staff!

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

The information provided by AdventureSmith was perfect! Everything was organized well, and there were no issues on anything arranged through them. All the information provided was spot on! The surprise gift the week before leaving was also a pleasant surprise. There were absolutely NO hiccups on any of the trip parts! We were very happy with the service and plan top use them again soon! We just wanted to thank you for the great adventure. Taylor, our Adventure Specialist, was always available for any questions and very responsive to our requests. Even while the trip was in progress and we had travel issues from the airlines that were not part of the AdventureSmith package, she made contact and kept us informed! Thank you so much! We have already started forming a group trip to the Galapagos with family and friends!

Traveler Advice

Follow all of the advice given by AdventureSmith. The insects are not a big issue and although there are a few bugs at the lodge, it is extremely clean and the food is awesome. They will also cater to dietary needs.

I was thoroughly pleased with my trip and AdventureSmith. Sacha Lodge was excellent. It was well run and kept you busy all day long.  The naturalist guide & our native guide were terrific. The towers and canopy walk and the tree tower were my favorites.

My room was very spacious and quite nice. The only comment I made on the lodge evaluation was to allow more time after breakfast and before the first activity of the day. We basically had 1/2 hour to eat breakfast, brush teeth, etc. and be ready to leave on our morning activity.

Naturalist Guide - Pablo - excellent guide, very knowledgeable. Native Guide - Shanshui - fantastic guide, could spot birds and animals from great distances, explained medicinal plants, helped take pictures for me, and he spoke good English even though he was a little shy. The representatives for Sacha Lodge met me at the airport ticket counters and guided me through check-in. Everything went very smoothly.

Leslie was terrific in helping me plan my trip. Her advice was perfect, and she responded to my questions in a timely manner. The written itinerary was thorough with all the emergency contact names and numbers. Leslie helped me throughout the planning process. I made my own international flight and hotel arrangements, but all of the internal flights and itinerary were provided by AdventureSmith.

Don’t overpack. Biodegradable shampoo, conditioner, and soap are provided so you do not need to bring your own.

This was an amazing trip filled with experiences and now, memories. AdventureSmith was helpful, professional and experienced every step of the way. The Galapagos had been on my bucket list for a long time. Last year when I started putting this trip together with AdventureSmith, I became incredibly excited about the possibilities for the other adventures. I most enjoyed the Lares Trek and the lodges we stayed in. Plus, we had a wonderful guide, Miguel who made it that much better. My husband's favorite was hiking Huayna Pichu.

Mountain Lodges of Peru -- lovely lodges; unique, carefully cared for by "locals"; wonderful concept.

El Mercado, Cusco -- good location; very accommodating with us being in and out (stored our luggage 3 different times); nice music in the evenings; street/neighborhood noise could often be heard; tea, coffee and water always available.

Libertador, Puno -- lovely hotel; on a "peninsula" so no options for meals (unless taking a taxi into Puno) except there; water bottles should always be available at no cost.

Napo Wildlife Center, Amazon -- fascinating experience; wonderful concept of the local tribe running the center.

The food in Peru was amazing; even "simple things" had wonderful taste. Each place was accommodating about me being vegetarian (even though I did not list it...I always find something to eat and I don't like to make a "deal" about it).

It was interesting to experience a Pachamanca meal during the Lares Trek; the 3rd lodge had truly amazing food and good thing we didn't stay there long or we would have gained weight. Nice variety at every one (minimal variety at the Lares Trek lodges, but understandable; they would make eggs any way a person wanted).

Thank you for having breakfast provided at every hotel, including the Libertador! Libertador -- main dining room was "fancy" (and expensive) and we ended up walking out of there and just going to the bar for dinner both nights. Amazon -- not "memorable" but there was variety at every meal.

Lares Trek -- we felt we got very lucky with Miguel. Miguel was a fountain of knowledge, personable, "ready for any event", and we could just tell he enjoys what he does and is very very good at it.

Lake Titicaca/Puno -- it was enjoyable to have a personal guide on the boat when we went to the reed islands and to Taquile Island; we got a more "up close and personal" tour of the peoples; and the trout lunch was delicious.

Napo Wildlife Center -- Delphin - he grew up in the jungle; very interesting to listen to him tell stories and history, point out flora and fauna along with the boat paddlers; he made that adventure "come alive."

AdventureSmith was with us every single step of the way; countless emails were answered; serious and goofy questions were always thoughtfully answered; suggestions were provided as being "suggestions" and not "must do"; I had the greatest confidence and trust in AdventureSmith. We were provided documentation, packing lists, vaccine suggestions and info, reading material. I felt thoroughly prepared due to AdventureSmith.

Absolutely recommend! Looking back over the trip and over the last year of planning, I was very smart in choosing AdventureSmith. If we ever take an "adventure trip" again, AdventureSmith will be my first contact to make. Thank you for....everything!!

Use AdventureSmith! It takes an incredible amount of planning (and $$), but it is totally worth the planning. Think about what YOU want to do and see. It may be different from "the beaten path", but that's ok. It's about YOUR trip and what you want to do.

The advance literature proclaimed the company sought to exceed our expectations, and they all did in every category. From the ship, the southern Alaska passages, the activities, the Un-Cruise company, down to every individual crew member, every part of this "adventure" was much better than we had imagined. As one example, we were surprised almost immediately buy how engaging and helpful the crew was. Not once did we see a crew member annoyed by a needy passenger or a question asked too many times. That must be a company goal!

The Wilderness Explorer was great. Although the cabins were small, we had what we needed and the public spaces were sized to handle the passengers comfortably, and there were so many activities we didn't spend much time in our rooms. The ship cruised smoothly in the inland passages, and even an overnight relocation cruise didn't interrupt sleep. Most enjoyed any kayaking activity off the boat. The launch/retrieve platform is an awesome modification, and probably what makes launching 10-15 kayaks in a short time possible. We greatly appreciated being able to rent the slogging boots on the boat.

No complaints whatsoever. We even had a pastry chef on our ship.

Might be tempted to say AdventureSmith over prepared us, given the extraordinarily good weather we had. We had only one day of rain in the entire week, and then it was in the 50's. Almost 70 in Glacier Bay for glacier kayaking. Personal to Aaron Gaines:  Thanks for the little 50th anniversary gift you had left in our cabin. On that Friday (Aug 7) we got to celebrate by kayaking in front of a glacier, on a beautiful day, with ORCAS swimming about a quarter mile away! Priceless!

The overall trip experience was extremely good. Every one of our guides were great and had good knowledge of their specific areas. Loved the Napo Wildlife Center and in particular our, guide, Remigio, was very personable. He really made it very enjoyable and went out of his way to show us different things. Also loved Machu Picchu and Cusco and our guide Elizabeth.

The food was fine at all the locations.

Our guides were excellent - especially Remigio at Napo and Elizabeth in Cusco. On the Galapagos cruise and Origin ship the two guides, Fabrizio and Pepe were excellent. (note - Eclipse ship cruise was cancelled due to engine trouble)

Definitely would recommend. Please pass on a huge thank you to Andrew for his expertise and suggestions and for his immediate response to our cruise 'problem' which turned out to be a blessing in disguise as we think Origin was perhaps better than Eclipse!

Remember that it is cold in the mountains in the evenings, even though you are on the equator and so it is important to bring warm clothes.

La Selva was beautiful and remote. Staff was VERY helpful and friendly. Superior guide, Paul. Food 5 star. Very interesting wildlife and vegetation. Most unusual, night hike through jungle. La Selva is all jungle. VERY hot and humid with no space air conditioned. If clients are highly sensitive to this, It could negatively affect the experience. Not very buggy, surprisingly, very few mosquitoes at this time of year. Some fitness useful, but all activities only mild to moderate difficulty. Longest hike no more than 2 miles.

5 star accommodations for a remote jungle site. NO air conditioned areas in entire resort.

Very good with dietary restrictions.

Paul was excellent. Very friendly and enthusiastic. Great English skills. Would love to have him on a re-visit.

All worked well. Useful to have all fees, etc. paid in advance.

Loved dealing with Arielle.

Detailed Itinerary

The culinary delights and magnificent wildlife of the Amazon lowlands await you in Belém and Marajó !

Your tour starts in Belém , on the immense Amazon estuary, more than 100km inland.

In a truly unique atmosphere, where the tropical flora integrates with a superb “Art Nouveau” heritage, the “ Ver-O-Peso “  food market will offer a first glimpse of the exotic  region.

This is a chance to sample rare local flavours by strolling through the dozens of multicoloured stalls. You will taste delicious dishes with exotic names such as Cupuaçu sorbet or Pato no Tucupi, a duck dish that numbs your lips; the Jambu leaves found in the sauce have anesthetic properties. An unusual multi-sensory experience that you won’t forget, rich in flavours, smells, sounds and colours.

One of our partners is the  Goeldi zoological park, here you can discover the amazing tropical ecosystem. You will see rare animals that are difficult to find in the wild such as the blue macaw, the anaconda or the “king of the forest”, the jaguar.

You will be accompanied by a guide who will share with you his knowledge and understanding of the local natural environment.

Next stop – Marajó , “the shield island” or “Marajoara” in the local language. This island is situated opposite the town of Belém, in the middle of the Amazon delta. Almost the size of Switzerland, it reigns over the river and the Atlantic Ocean and is divided into two very distinct halves.

You will sail there along the Amazon River! It’s a 3 hour boat ride to reach the island and this will give you time to realize the incredible enormity of the Amazon river as it flows into the ocean.

The people live on the eastern side of the island on its beaches and fields. There are fazendas (large farms or ranches) and vast flooded plains where they raise buffalo; the main inhabitant of the eastern part of the island.

As the island is partly marshy, buffalo, which have inhabited the island as far back as people can remember, are an ideal alternative to horses for transport. Even the mounted police ride buffalo!

On the western side, a thick mangrove extends over the entire coastline, as well as a practically impenetrable inland forest . This is the kingdom of macaws, toucans and sloths.

Walking through the streets of  Salvaterre , you will discover the lively local culture. From here you will go to your “pousada” (lodge). It is worth spending a little time visiting the surrounding villages which still hold traditional pottery workshops, a legacy of the local indigenous people and their extraordinary skills. It is a privileged moment to learn more about an indigenous civilization that lasted nearly a thousand years (400 to 1400 AD) and which, at its peak, had a population of more than 100,000. It’s also a good opportunity to bring back some original and ecological souvenirs and participate in the local economy at the same time!

For an authentic stay, you will be in a fazenda (ranch) hotel in the heart of Marajó Island. With simple but comfortable facilities and decor influenced by local crafts and materials you will find it easy to relax here during this island getaway.

You can discover how a local ranch works with no compromise on the comfort of your holiday.

The second part of your tour: From Manaus to Anavilhanas.

After discovering the incredible entrance to the Amazon forest with Belém and Marajó, you will take a flight of 2 hrs to the amazing city of Manaus built in the very heart of this huge tropical forest.

You will start your Amazon forest adventure in this great urban clearing, with the splendid Amazonas neo-Renaissance Theatre, a vestige of the transitory prosperity linked to the rubber making era.

With grandeur and decadence, this city and its inhabitants have been able to adapt over the course of time to alternative prosperous periods and economic decline. We want you to discover this fascinating and rich history and so offer the services of an experienced guide to take you on a captivating visit of Manaus, the capital of the state of Amazonia.

To top off this splendid visit, there’s nothing better than a cruise along its main waterways, a private cruise with a guide will take you from Manaus into the jungle, going up the Rio Negro, one of the two main tributaries of the majestic Amazon river.

Aboard a traditional style boat , exclusively for you and yours, you will arrive at an immense natural lake, the Acajatuba lake . This region is a true jewel of nature, home to  the Anavilhanas archipelago and its 400 islands .

During this expedition in the labyrinth of igarapes, (tributaries connecting the rivers) your guide will suggest  exclusive activities depending on the season, weather conditions and your desires. There are all sorts of things to do!

You can fish for piranha, go canoeing at night to see caimans, canoe through the Igapos (the submerged forest) or explore the jungle on foot and lots more! If you are lucky you may see a pod of botos, the famous pink Amazon dolphins .

You may even be able to swim among them, a wonderful experience never to be forgotten!

On this boat trip you will also meet the communities that live all year round on the banks of the rivers, the famous Ribeirinhos (literally inhabitants of the shore), the Caboclos, the mixed race locals who will show you some of their secrets of how to survive in this beautiful yet unforgiving environment. You can also meet the original Indian inhabitants of this isolated world, famous for their traditional craftsmanship.

Downstream from Manaus, on your return trip, you will discover the “Encounter of the Waters” which is both a strange and magnificent phenomenon. For several kilometres you will sail on a half-yellow, half-black river before the waters of the Negro river and the Solimoes river finally mingle and give birth to the Amazon.

The Amazon Tour – Accomodation

Belém, hotel crown belém (standard & superior).

The Crown Plaza Bel is owned by a large international hotel group, and is one of the best hotels in the city. It is ideally located in the economic centre, in an uptown area where you will find many restaurants and all the services you might need.

The modern hotel’s elegant building consists of 173 rooms divided into different classes for all types of tourists in search of comfort and quality services.

This is a good option if you enjoy all the services and atmosphere of a large contemporary hotel.

Atrium Quinta das Pedras Hotel (standard & superior)

The Atrium Quinta das Pedras hotel offers a very interesting combination of historical charm and modern comforts. Built around a 17th century building that has been used for lots of different things over the years, it has now been completely renovated, thanks to the Atrium Group and the Ministry of Culture. It is now one of the best hotels in Belém. Its suites are comfortable and pleasant highlighting the old architecture alongside modern conveniences. The public places such as the courtyard, bar and restaurant give a convivial and elegant atmosphere to this hotel.

Ideally located in the charming historic part of town, it’s undoubtedly one of the best hotels for those who want local charm without compromising on modern amenities and comfort.

Marajó

Fazenda hotel sanjo (standard & superior).

At the Fazenda Hotel Sanjo, you will experience an original stay right in the heart of a vast land property that covers most of the inhabited part of Marajó island.
