Astoria's paramedics celebrate new $4 million ems station, after spending years in a temporary trailer, the emts who serve astoria have a shiny new home — but hopefully you'll never benefit from it..

ASTORIA, QUEENS — The paramedics who serve Astoria are moving their headquarters from a trailer below the Triboro Bridge to a shiny new $4 million facility — but hopefully you'll never need to benefit from it.

Fire Department officials cut the ribbon Tuesday for the new EMS Station 49, on 42nd Street north of 20th Avenue in Astoria. Housed within an industrial building, the 26,000-square-foot station cost $4 million to build after construction began in early 2020.

It will serve residents of Astoria and surrounding communities in Queens, according to the FDNY.

Find out what's happening in Astoria-Long Island City with free, real-time updates from Patch.

"Station 49 is essential to our Department’s operations and to the health and safety of all Queens residents," acting Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh said in a statement.

ambulance tours 37

More than 120 EMTs and paramedics will work each day at Station 49, which includes 12 ambulance bays, 150 lockers and storage area for PPE, offices for the lieutenants and station captain, a conference room, kitchen and dining area, and a lactation room for personnel who are nursing mothers.

Also part of the facility is a memorial for former Batallion 49 paramedic Carlos Lillo , who died in the Sept. 11 attacks at the age of 37, as Queens Post reported .

The station will run 28 ambulance tours each day, according to the FDNY said. It replaces the station's temporary location in an office trailer on Hoyt Avenue South below the Triboro Bridge, which opened in 2014.

First established in 1996, Station 49 was initially located in the basement of Mount Sinai Hospital Queens on 30th Avenue, before being displaced due to the hospital's renovation. The station's new home on 42nd Street is being leased by the city's Department of Citywide Administration Services.

Thrice announce ‘The Artist in the Ambulance’ 20th anniversary tour + release re-recorded version of beloved album

Following a string of successful shows in December and preparing to celebrate 25 years of being a band, Thrice have just unveiled some massive news. First, Thrice shared a brand new, re-recorded version of their seminal 2003 album, The Artist in the Ambulance . The re-recording finds the band revisiting all 12 original tracks, featuring guest vocals from Ryan Osterman (Holy Fawn), Chuck Ragan (Hot Water Music), Sam Carter (Architects), Mike Minnick (Curl Up And Die), Brian McTernan (Be Well), and Andy Hull (Manchester Orchestra).

Fans can stream The Artist in the Ambulance – Revisited now, and pre-order limited edition vinyl now here .

“ The question has to be asked: Why would we re-record a 20 year old album, let alone one that is widely beloved and arguably our most well-known. I think the core of the answer is that it simply sounded fun and we were curious ,” shares Thrice’s vocalist Dustin Kensrue. “ We know that playing the revisionist is a dangerous game, so we were always a little uneasy about trying to go back and mess with something that people loved, people who had none of the hangups about the record that we did. But, since we decided to do this anyway, we tried to let that wariness guide us in how we approached the record, and in the end we decided to make very minimal structural changes .”

Released in 2003, The Artist In The Ambulance remains one of the most influential albums in the genre. Featuring tracks like “The Artist In The Ambulance,” “All That’s Left,” “Stare At The Sun” and more, the album peaked at number 1 and number 16 on the Billboard US Top Internet Albums and Billboard 200 chart respectively. “All That’s Left” peaked at number 24 on Alternative Airplay, number 36 on Mainstream Rock Airplay and number 37 on Active Rock, and “Stare at the Sun” peaked at number 39 on Alternative Airplay.

“ At the end of the day, what we wanted the record to sound like for fans is that somehow one of their old favorite records got a new lease on life, but that it hadn’t lost its soul or turned into something else. We hope you enjoy revisiting ‘The Artist In the Ambulance.’ ”

The second bit of huge news Thrice revealed today is their plans for a tour in celebration of the 20h anniversary of The Artist in the Ambulance . The tour kicks off on May 18th in San Diego, CA, and will be visiting cities throughout the United States, playing The Artist In The Ambulance in its entirety, with special guest Holy Fawn.

Pre-sale tickets are available now at here . All additional tickets go on sale Friday, February 3rd at 12pm ET here .

On the upcoming tour, Kensrue shares, “‘ The Artist in the Ambulance’ has played such a huge part in the history of the band. These songs have stood the test of time better than we could have known when we wrote them. But they’ve also subtly shifted and grown with us as we’ve played them at shows over the last 20 years, which is why it was so much fun to revisit them in the studio, and also why we are so excited to play the whole record live, especially for the first time in its entirety.”

Twenty-five hospitals in New York City voluntarily contribute their ambulances to the City of New York 911 System. Staffed by paid hospital personnel, these ambulances respond to 911 calls at the direction of FDNY Emergency Medical Services (FDNY EMS) dispatch. Thirty-seven percent of ambulance tours in New York City are covered by ambulances provided by these hospitals, also known as Voluntary Hospitals .

  • In this configuration voluntary hospitals opt to not run, staff and maintain their own EMS Departments but instead contract this to an outside vendor, a Private EMS Agency. The largest in New York City used to be Transcare , with over 2,500 EMS members, which collapsed abruptly in 2016. Transcare was besides the FDNY the largest single local employer of EMS in NYC.
  • In the wake of the Transcare bankruptcy crisis the Hospitals it managed ambulance services for were split up between Seniorcare, Citywide, Empress and Assist with Seniorcare taking the largest share; 4 seperate hospitals.
  • The FDNY despised Transcare and still despises this latest configuration which remains in place largely because the FDNY lacks the human resources to staff trucks and the individual hospitals lack the will to establish their own EMS garages. Thus the members are tecnically speaking, PRIVATE EMS, contracted to run VOLUNTARY UNITS, operating in the FDNY 911 System.

In Queens, back in the 60' and continuing on Voluntary hospital units were dispatched through the 911 system. Well, there was no "911" and calling for PD or an ambulance was "440-1234." Those Queens units were, Booth Memorial, Flushing, Long Island Jewish, Jamaica, Mary Immaculate, Wyckoff, Peninsula General, St. John's (Qns. Blvd.), St. Joseph's in Rockaway (Now St. John's Episcopal). Today, Long Island Jewish, St. John's, Mary Immaculate, St. Josephs and Peninsula General ambulances are no longer with us. Between NYCDOH units and Voluntary hospital units in the 60's there were only 13 ambulances to cover Queens. DOH ambulances ran out of Queens General and Elmhurst hospital.

EMT, 75-year-old patient killed in crash between ambulance and tractor-trailer

GARRARD COUNTY, Ky. ( WKYT /Gray News) - Two people were killed in a crash involving an ambulance and a tractor-trailer in Kentucky.

The crash happened around 9 a.m. Monday near a gas station at the intersection of US 27 and Old US 27 in Garrard County.

According to Kentucky State Police, 44-year-old Cory Dunn of Lexington was driving a tractor-trailer east on Old Lexington Road and made a left-handed turn onto Lexington Road in front of a Somerset-Pulaski County ambulance driven by 26-year-old EMT Chastian McWhorter of Albany, who was traveling north on Lexington Road.

The state police said McWhorter and a patient in the ambulance, 75-year-old Robert Caudill of Nancy, were killed in the crash and pronounced dead by the coroner.

A passenger in the ambulance, 23-year-old Bailey Haynes of Somerset, was taken to UK Hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Dunn was also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
