Tuscan art of every kind is celebrated at the Antinori family’s elegant headquarters, from the architecture slipping it surreptitiously into the hillside to the museum space hosting historical and contemporary exhibitions; local produce goes into rustically-inspired but polished dishes at the Rinuccio 1180 restaurant (named after the family’s first recorded winemaker) and watch the art of winemaking itself in the advanced and sustainable gravitational facility – opened in 2012, it marks the next chapter in a 26-generation history. Finish in the cubed glass tasting room that hangs out above the cellar as if suspended over the barrels.

Why the Antinori winery near Florence is a must-visit

Antinori winery near Florence is a must visit

If you’re visiting Florence, a visit to the Antinori nel Chianti Classico winery is a must, especially for those who appreciate wine. Antinori is one of the oldest companies in the world, with roots that can be traced back to 1385. While we were there in February, it was still cold and the vines were resting. But the Antinori estate was still beautiful, especially when we took the spiral staircase up to the rooftop garden. Here is why the Antinori winery near Florence is a must-visit.

antinori classico winery driveway

Antinori has huge historical significance in Italy’s wine industry, playing a significant role in the ‘ Super Tuscan ‘ revolution in the 70s. Back then, wine-makers were very tightly restricted in terms of the type and percentage of grape varietals that could be used in wine to get a certain accreditation, such as  DOC or DOCG . Some wine-makers decided to ignore this classification and make ‘Super Tuscans’, wines from Tuscany made with blends and wine-making techniques that were not based on the conditions for accreditation. Back then, these wines could not fetch a price as high as those with DOCG accreditation, but many of them proved to be excellent in their own way.

tignanello Antinori nel Chianti Classico

Antinori’s most famous wine – Tignanello – is made from grapes grown at a 47 hectare vineyard acquired in 1900. According to Wikipedia, the wine was produced for the first time in 1970 by Piero Antinori – whose father Nicolo had scandalised/revolutionised (depending on the time period) the Tuscany wine region by experimenting with French Bordeaux grape varietals. He was rewarded for challenging the status quo when Tignanello won several international awards. Since 1982, Tignanello has been made from approximately 85% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. The vineyard lies at 350–400 metres above sea level, within the Santa Cristina estate (also known as Tenuta Tignanello). [It is a 10min drive from the Antinori nel Chianti Classico. See picture below.]

Location & Parking

Antinori was a short 30 min drive from our hotel B&B The Attico in Florence . It was also a 30 min drive from our lunch destination, the restaurant of  Dario Cecchini . If you are heading to Siena, it is a 40 min drive away. If you drive, you are able to park within the complex during winter. During other seasons, you can park at the carpark located across the winery.

Antinori nel Chianti Classico estate

Wine tours range from €35 – €160

There is an option of pre-booking a wine tour around this big estate. The basic tour costs €35, and if you wish to have lunch at the restaurant, it costs €160. We didn’t take this option as we were looking to try other types of wines other than the ones listed in the tour, including the Tignanello. We also had four other Brunello vineyards to visit the day after (more on that in a post to come).

Visit to the wine shop – you can do a tasting too

Solaia antinori super tuscan pioneer

Wine lovers could spend a day in Antinori’s wine shop – the selection was so diverse. The good thing is that we had a chance to taste the wines before buying them. We tried the Marchese Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva for €4 and the Tignanello for €8 – like the staff suggested, the Chianti Classico was the younger brother of the Tignanello. More fruit-forward, but less refined and elegant. That said, both were excellent and we bought a bottle of each – both to rest for a few years before enjoying. The Chianti Classico was about €30 while the Tignanello was €77. It was a reasonable price for the quality. At an admittedly touristy wine shop in Siena, the price about €120.

Rooftop vineyard and garden

vineyard Antinori nel Chianti Classico

After buying the wines, we climbed up the spiral staircase to see the garden. From an architectural standpoint, it was quite a feat because the vineyards integrated quite seamlessly into the facade of the main Antinori building.

The Travelling Squid’s Take

architecture Antinori nel Chianti Classico rooftop

If you’re into wine, Antinori makes for a great visit. The estate is very well-designed – architecturally, it gives the appearance of the building flowing into the hills, while being enveloped by the vines. I’m sure it will look beautiful in summer. A minor caveat is that this is not actually the vineyard where the grapes of their more acclaimed wines, such as Solaia and Tignanello are grown. That’ll be found further East, at Tenuta Tignanello. The brown tones are not intrusive and so are the contours of the building which folds into the hills. While we didn’t take the tour around the building, I was glad to view the rooftop garden and the hills of Tuscany. The wine prices were also much more reasonable than the ones we had seen in major cities.

Winery visit and tasting at cantina antinori.

antinori winery tours

The perfect day trip from Florence to immerse yourself in the world of Chianti wine-making. Cantina Antinori was inaugurated in 2012 to showcase more than 600 years of wine-making history. As stated on the Cantina Antinori’s website, the winery “represents the Antinori family’s love and passion for the Chianti Classico hillsides and reflects the centuries-old bond that the Antinori family has with their ancestral territory.”

Set among olive groves, vineyards and oak trees, almost hidden from view, the cellar was designed by one of Italy’s leading architects, Marco Casamonti. Most of the facility is underground, constructed within the hillside, as a way to highlight the winery’s rootedness to the land around it. The 540,000 square-foot structure includes an auditorium, a museum, a restaurant and a wine shop. All you can see from outside is the restaurant terrace, which overlooks the vineyards.

On this Antinori winery tour, you’ll be led on a visit of the museum, which traces the family’s long and illustrious history and displays their private art collection that includes many portraits of ancestors, and of the wine cellars, a series of softly-lit, sleek caves and spectacular, airy rooms tucked deep inside the hill. At the end of the visit, delight your palate with a tasting of three of the best Antinori wines: Villa Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva, Marchese Antinori Chianti Classico DOCG Riserva and Badia a Passignano.

Badia a Passignano and the Great Antinori Wines

antinori winery tours

This tour is ideal for those who want to enjoy a little history with their wine. In 1987, the Antinori’s bought the 325-hectare estate around the 4 th -century Vallombrosian abbey , founded by the archbishop of Florence 18 miles south of the Tuscan capital. Walking among the vineyards, you’ll learn about the vine-growing process; you’ll then visit the historic monastery and cellars. Vallombrosan monks still live here. They are known for their love of books, for promoting scientific research (Galileo taught there in 1587) and for their meticulous care of the surrounding fields, especially the cultivation of grapevines and reforestation.

The tour concludes with a delicious meal at the one-star Michelin Osteria di Passignano , accompanied, of course, by some of the best Antinori wines, such as Chianti Classico Riserva Badia a Passignano, Tignanello, Guado al Tasso, and Pian delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino.

Private Cooking Class with Antinori’s Osteria di Passignano in Chianti

Why limit yourself to wine when you can enjoy it accompanied by tasty Tuscan food? And even learn a few tricks of Tuscan cuisine so that you can enjoy the experience again when you’re back home.

Your special teacher is the chef of the one-star Michelin Osteria di Passignano. The lesson takes place in the professional kitchen at Antinori’s Fonte de’ Medici Estate, where the stars of the Antinori’s wines, Tignanello and Solaia, are produced. While you learn how to prepare a four-course menu , you’ll enjoy tastings of Pecorino cheeses, balsamic vinegar and Amedei chocolate; at the end, you’ll receive a diploma and a complimentary recipe book to take home.

Enjoy the fruits of your labor afterwards, when you have lunch at Osteria di Passignano nearby, sampling the dishes you previously prepared, accompanied by Antinori wines.

Chianti Nord Wine Tour

A Hand holding a glass of red wine while looking at the color of the wine

This full-day tour from Florence is ideal for those who want an overview of the Chianti wine region, besides the Antinori winery.

The first stop is Greve in Chianti , the main town in the Chianti wine district, 19 miles south of Florence. Olive oil and wine production are the main agricultural activities here. After a tour of Greve, you’ll explore different vineyards of the area, including Casaloste, known for their fine Chianti Classico and Riserva wines, Antinori, and Setriolo, with visits to their cellars and tastings.

Staying in the heart of the Chianti region

Now that you’ve got an overview of the best Antinori winery tours, you may decide that you’d like to spend more than a day in this enchanting area of Tuscany. You can book a stay at Fonte de’ Medici , a resort run by the Antinori family. The Super Tuscans Tignanello and Solaia are made from vines grown around the Fonte de’ Medici estate. The resort consists of two restored medieval villages, with apartments, two swimming pools, a wellness center, all set amid olive and cypress trees. The ultimate Chianti experience.

Visit the Antinori vineyards and winery – a wine tasting in Chianti

Dutch

Latest update: 27 June 2023

You have wine tours, and then you have an Antinori wine tour. This Italian winery in the Chianti region of Tuscany offers a very professional wine tour. From reception to departure, a visit to the Antinory winery and vineyards is immaculate. Maybe even a little too perfect for my taste. So let’s take you on a visit to the Antinori winery and vineyards.

What do you want to know more about?

A grand Antinori welcome

A huge parking lot awaits across the street from Antinori’s winery. Visitors to the Antinori winery can park their car for free to be driven up the hill in a van. That short drive alone is impressive: this is not a simple dirt road to a small-scale winegrower. Instead, you enter a network of tunnels to a well-organized wine company, where I report to a counter (which could just as easily have been a hotel counter) for my tour. Before the tour starts, we marvel at the architecture and the Antinori vineyards. The Antinori family is pretty fortunate, I dare say.

visit Antinori winery

The allure of the Antinori winery

The Antinori’s have immersed themselves in wine for over 600 years. The knowledge and passion are passed on from generation to generation. Not that long ago, the family opened the current building: a mega-sized winery with extraordinary architecture amidst the vineyards. In the opening video of the tour, Mr. Antinori admits that it cost a lot of money and that it probably wasn’t the most commercially sound decision. But the family was eager to open the winery and vineyard to the public. And if you do open the winery and vineyards up, then why not go all the way, right?

The driveway of Winery Antinori Chianti

Eco-friendly winery in Chianti

The idea is that the winery blends into its surroundings, almost invisible. The latter did not quite work out; it is much too large and impressive. The building is eco-friendly, hence choosing many natural materials (terracotta, wood, glass) and building underground. That’s a smart choice because it eliminates the need for air conditioning to cool the space where the wines ferment and rest.

Tip! Want to discover more wineries? Learn where you can enjoy fantastic wine in Tuscany .

The Antinori wine empire

The winery in Chianti, in San Casciano in Val di Pesa, is just one of the sites of the Antinori group. The family owns many vineyards across the country, so they don’t just make Chianti wines. The Chianti grapes are mainly grown on the hill here though: the Sangiovese.

A visit to the Antinori winery: what can you expect?

The tour starts with a movie in a gigantic cinema hall. The film is about the family and the construction of the building that is now the Antinori winery. A guide then takes the group to some works of art from the family’s private collection. A pretty impressive collection: for example, you’ll find a replica of Leonardo Da Vinci’s wine crusher.

Silence before the harvest season

The next stop of the tour is the winery itself. The temperature drops considerably because we are 20 meters underground. We see the huge barrels, the perfectly straight-aligned wine barrels… It’s like a museum! The guide assures us that it is a very different scene during the harvest. Chaos and bustle. If you want to visit the Antinori winery during that period, you must book well in advance.

Wine in barrels at Antinori

Italian countryside on point

We briefly take a look at the Antinori vineyard and admire the building. On the edge of the vineyard is a beautiful restaurant – the Antinori family owns it, of course. It’s the kind of restaurant you can’t describe any other way than typical Italian in the countryside, including checkered tablecloths and shady spots. Restaurant Rinuccio 1190 is on the roof of the winery. But because the winery is an architectural masterpiece, the rooftop spills over into the Antinori vineyards, so it doesn’t feel like a roof at all.

Restaurant Rinuccio 1190

Wine tasting at Antinori

The wine tour at Antinori ends with wine. What else?! We taste three different Antinori wines. Afterward, there is the possibility of stocking up on wine. It all feels a bit sterile, I must say. We stand at a high U-shaped table with the guide in the middle, and people speak to each other in whispers. I wish the wine tasting at Antinori was a little more fun and easygoing.

Wine tasting at Antinori winery

So is the Antinori wine tasting tour a MUST-visit when in Tuscany? Yes, if you are also interested in the Antinori family and the remarkable building. No, if you come mainly for the wines. I didn’t think the wine tasting was a memorable experience, a bit too sterile.

By the way, you can order an Antinori wine at Albert Heijn in the Netherlands . To taste beforehand or to enjoy after your visit. 🙂

Visit Antinori winery and vineyard?

Antinori offers several wine tastings and tours. The one I did cost €45. Consult the website to see which winery tour you like and book in advance. If you also want to have lunch or dinner in the restaurant, reserve ahead. Especially in high season.

Can’t get enough of wine tastings? I understand! Read my other tips for wine tastings in Chianti .

Best Places to Visit in Tuscany

J oin EuropeUpClose as we take a journey to some of the best places to visit in Tuscany. We will begin in Florence, then drive to San Gimignano with a stop at the fabulous Antinori nel Chianti Classico Winery. From San Gimignano we venture to the compelling town of Siena with its fantastic cathedral and famous horse races in the Palio. Another hour south and we’ll stop at Caparzo Winery near Montalcino before heading east to the beautiful hilltop walled city of Montepulciano.

Visit Florence

Florence is a natural starting point to begin your journey to the best places to visit in Tuscany. Known for the imposing red-roofed Duomo and Michelangelo’s David in the Accademia, Florence is a mecca for art, food, architecture, and history. You don’t want to miss the Uffizi Museum, the Central Market, and Ponte Vecchio, the bridge across the Arno River filled with shops displaying jewelry, crafts, and other fun products.

Florentine Bisteca

And, of course, if you are in Florence, you must try the famous Florentine Bisteca. It is often referred to as some of the best steak in the world. We were lucky to have reservations at Trattoria dall’Oste Chianineria on  Via dei Cerchi. Just a few minutes south of the Duomo, this iconic restaurant is well known for their Bisteca and other fine cuts of meat.

Florentines do like their steak rare, so be aware. You can order yours medium or medium rare, and it will most likely still come out very pink. One thing I liked about Trattoria dall’Oste Chianineria is that they brought out a hot plate along with the steak. That way, anyone who wanted their steak more done could cook it a bit more right at the table. Most of us ate it like it came, but there were a few in our party who preferred their steak more done. Sides included roasted potatoes, pasta with thinly sliced truffles, and some tasty bruschetta. For dessert, we completed our meal with a glass of Vin Santo served with tasty biscotti.

Wine Tasting and Lunch at Antinori Winery

With options of several great Antinori locations, we chose to tour the Antinori nel Chianti Classico vineyards just 20 minutes south of Florence. In a country where wine is a way of life, for twenty-six generations, the name Antinori has stood out.

We booked the special CRU Tour. This included a tour of the winery, a wine tasting of seven great wines, followed by a delicious lunch. This fully immersive experience featuring the wine-making philosophy of Marchesi Antinori following years of family tradition. Led by our outstanding sommelier, our tasting was held inside the fabulous wine cellar. Then we enjoyed lunch on the outdoor patio at the Rinuccio 1180 restaurant. This modernistic rooftop restaurant overlooks the gently rolling hills of the scenic Tuscan countryside.

Some of our favorite wines included a crisp Cervaro Della Sala Blend of Chardonnay and Grechetto and a Tignanello red blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. The crowd favorite was the outstanding Brunello di Montalcino Pian Dellevigne Sangiovese. The following lunch on the beautiful outside terrance at Rinuccio made for a most pleasant day. This special vineyard among special vineyards in Tuscany is certainly worth a visit.

Explore the Hilltop Walled-Town of San Gimignano

After being totally wowed by Antinori nel Chianti Classico, we headed south to nearby San Gimignano. This was our third visit to this iconic Tuscan town – and we will be back again. No article about best places to visit in Tuscany would be complete without this idyllic town.

We stayed at the cozy Orto di Emma at Piazza delle erbe 4 . The location is conveniently in the middle of this walled city. Restaurants, spectacular views, and attractions are just a few steps away. Without any train station in town, most visitors come via personal car or with a tour group. There is a bus that comes from the closest train station (~ five miles away), but check the schedules.

Eat at Fuoriluogo Ristorante

Fuoriluogo Ristorante is a wonderful family restaurant just a two-minute walk outside the walls. In addition to having wonderful food, the service, the artwork, and the friendliness of Mauro, Davide, Enrica, Christian, and the rest of the staff are all top-notch. It’s no wonder Fuoriluogo is one of the highest-rated restaurants in San Gimignano.

Mauro was gone for important meetings with Barolo. He continues to work on the fine wines the restaurant offers to diners. In his absence, the rest of the staff did a superb job of welcoming us and making us feel so special. Our outstanding waiter, Rafael, kindly suggested a recommended menu along with wine pairings, and we were so glad we agreed to take his advice. Julie and I enjoyed a fantastic meal with just the right wines paired with each dish.

Favorites included the Wild Boar Ravioli with citrus fruits in a saffron cream sauce, and a delectable Soft Organic Egg with sausage, red peppers, and gorgovino mousse. We also both loved the pizza, some of the best I’ve ever tasted. The light, tender crust had just the right flavors to complement the fresh tomatoes, cheeses, and fresh herbs. For dessert, we could not resist the tempting tiramisu.

In addition to the fantastic food and service, the artwork and ambiance of Fuoriluogo is superb. Davide is a wonderful artist and painted much of the beautiful artwork in the restaurant. The friendly staff, elegant but comfortable ambiance and outstanding food and drink make Fuoriluogo one of the top restaurants in San Gimignano.

Check Out Intriguing Siena

It was hard to leave San Gimignano, but we had Siena waiting for us. The charming walled city of Siena is famous for its beautiful cathedral and for the exciting Palio di Siena Horse Races held twice a year in the large central Piazza del Campo. We unfortunately just missed this exciting event. It normally takes place twice a year on July 2 and August 16 every year. Preliminary events take place the three days before the official race. Since this is a very popular event, plan early if you want to attend during the races.

Following lunch on the lovely outdoor terrace at ViVace Ristorante and Wine Bar , we walked the short 10 minutes to the beautiful gothic Siena Cathedral. This impressive structure was built between 1215 and 1267 and features artwork from artists like Michelangelo, Donatello, and Pisano. With its iconic greenish-black and white stripes, this historic icon is striking inside and out. Other great attractions in and around the cathedral include the Piccolomini Library, the Museo dell ‘Opera, Baptistery, Crypt, Oratory of San Bernardino, and Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art.

Drink Brunello Wines at Caparzo Winery in Montalcino

With so many outstanding wineries around Montalcino, we picked Caparzo Winery to have a tasting and to explore. My new daughter-in-law became acquainted with Caparzo while watching the fun Letters to Juliet movie from 2010. There are some scenes in the movie from one of the many Caparzo winery locations in Tuscany. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour and tasting at Caparzo Winery, especially their world-famous Brunello di Montalcino. An added bonus was the spectacular scenery on our road trip from Montepulciano to Caparzo. Located in the picturesque hills of Montalcino, with fields of red poppies next to golden fields of wheat blowing in the breeze.

Eat and Drink your Way through Montepulciano

So, after visiting the walled cities of San Gimignano and Siena, we had another walled hilltop city on our itinerary: Montepulciano. Our return to this fantastic village was equally full of great food, wines, views, history, and special people of the town. This very walkable small town is anchored by the Grand Piazza, and is famous for its Vino Nobile red wines . Another notable landmark includes the Torre di Pulcinella. This clock tower is topped by the whimsical figure of the Pulcinella, a classical comedic character.

We also found the “underground city” of this hill town fascinating. Miles of tunnels, rooms, and cellars have been carved into the rock underneath Montepulciano, making for a fun and educational tour. We went to the popular Cantina Ercolani for a tour and wine tasting. Other popular wineries in Montepulciano include Cantucci Winery and Cantina de‘Ricci.

Eat at L’Altro Cantuccio Ristorante

L’Altro Cantuccio Ristorante is a fabulous family-run restaurant just a few minutes’ walk from where we stayed at the lovely Montepulciano Bed & Breakfast at Via Di Gracciano. Chef Mattia Putzulu and his lovely wife, Monica, a Sommelier, have created one of the best dining experiences in Montepulciano. L’Altro Cantuccio exudes old-world charm. Modern appointments along with the historic stone, wood, and brick is the perfect blend of old and new.

Mattia and Monica graciously hosted us for an extremely memorable evening. For starters, we enjoyed an outstanding Tuscan and Cinta Senese salami, Pecorino cheese of Pienza, and a selection of homemade fruit mostarda. Our server also brought a stuffed golden tomato held by a sculpted hand along with an excellent 100% Sangiovese wine.

For my main course, I had the Cheek of Chianani Beef cooked for 50 hours, with spicy vegetables, citrus fruits, and dill. The beef cheek was extremely tender and flavorful. It was one of my favorite dishes during our three-week visit to Europe. My wife had the equally excellent grilled Chianani flank steak. Other enticing mains on the menu included the Lamb with ember, coconut, mint, and radish, and a crispy salt cod with artichokes and burrata cheese.

Dessert was the amazing Underworld, an artistic and decadent concoction of chocolate mushrooms, acorns, and undergrowth – a true masterpiece! Each bite brought out the intense flavors of chocolate, cream, and nuts. I would loved to have brought one back to the states to share with family and friends, but I don’t think it would travel well (plus, I would probably eat it all before our return!).

L’Altro Cantuccio has deservedly earned its reputation as one of the top restaurants in Montepulciano. Do yourself a favor, and let Mattia and Monica treat you to a fantastic dining experience in their lovely hilltop restaurant.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
