Reasons to Choose Egypt and Africa Tours...

Breathtaking Egypt and Africa Tours

Egypt and Africa Tours

If you are serious about having an adventure of a lifetime, then our Egypt and Africa Tours might just be the sort of trip you have been dreaming about; the sort of travel adventures that dreams are made of. From the ancient pyramids, temples and tombs of Egypt, to the vast unspoiled wilderness of countries like Kenya and Tanzania, our Egypt and Africa tours are all you could ever want them to be, and more.

Busting the Myth

One of the greatest myths of all is that Africa is dangerous. In reality however, Africa, as a continent, is no more dangerous than any other continent. Yes, just like with other continents, Africa also has places which are dangerous, and places which tourists should rather avoid visiting, but you will never find any such places featured in our Egypt and Africa itineraries. The African countries that you will see being featured in our Egypt and Africa tours attract millions of visitors every year, and this simply would not be the case if these countries were dangerous.

Why You Should Book a Trip to Kenya

When people think of Kenya, they almost exclusively think about the country’s vast amount of wildlife. After all, nature reserves such as the Maasai Mara National Park are globally famous. This national park in particular, is known all around the world for its huge population of lions, leopards and cheetahs, although it is of course home to millions of other wild animals, and especially from June to October.

Every year in June, millions of animals such as wildebeests; zebras and gazelles migrate from the plains of the Serengeti in Tanzania to the plains of Maasai Mara, an event known as the Big Migration. For anyone who wants to witness this spectacular phenomenon, there is no better place to do so than the Maasai Mara National Park. You can also witness the Big Migration in October when the animals once again return to the plains of Serengeti.

All of our Egypt and Africa tours that feature Kenya include spending some time at the Maasai Mara National Park, as well as at one or more other national parks as well. In short, your time in Kenya will be all about seeing the country’s wildlife, and you will be doing so in comfort and style.

Why Travel to Tanzania

Like Kenya, Tanzania is world famous for its wildlife and wilderness area. In fact, Tanzania is home to one of the world’s most famous nature reserves: the Serengeti National Park. It is almost impossible to visit this reserve without seeing Africa’s Big 5: lions, leopards; elephants, rhinoceroses and Cape wildebeests. There are also many other nature reserves in Tanzania, including places such as the Kilimanjaro National Park for example. Tanzania is very serious about conservation. Roughly 38% of the country’s land area is protected for conservation purposes.

Another great reason to visit Tanzania is because it is also home to Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro.  And, if you get bored with safaris, then there are also many other fascinating attractions to see in the country, including two small islands. However, our existing Egypt and Africa tours that feature Tanzania are geared primarily for people who want to experience the African wilderness and the animals which have made it so famous.

Of course, we also offer customized Egypt and Africa tours, meaning that any one of our existing tours can be customized according to your own individual needs and requirements. Alternatively, our team of travel specialists can work with you to create you very own tour itinerary from scratch. Just tell us where you want to go and what you want to see, and then we will build a unique itinerary based on what you have asked for. After all, it is your vacation, and we want it to be a vacation you will never be able to forget.

Why Travel to Egypt

There are many reasons why people choose to visit Egypt, and also many reasons why so many people visit time and time again. Egypt is undeniably one of the world’s most fascinating countries to visit, thanks to the fact that it is home to an almost infinite number of ancient artifacts and monument, including the world’s most iconic ancient monuments, the Giza Pyramids and the Sphinx.

Millions of people also visit Egypt to experience the magic of a Nile River cruise, and if you travel to Egypt with us, you won’t be going on just any Nile cruise; you will be going on a 5-Star Nile River cruise, and there will even be one of our Expert tour guides aboard the ship to escort you are on all the different excursion you will be enjoying along the way.

In addition to its countless ancient Egyptian monuments, Egypt’s Red Sea coast is extremely popular among people who simply want to enjoy a relaxing break in the sun, surrounded by pristine beaches and crystal clear waters. The Egyptian Red Sea coastline is also home to some of the world’s very best dive sites, attracting thousands and thousands of SCUBA divers and snorkelers from around the world. The bottom line is that there really is so much to see and do in the country, regardless of your age, and regardless of whether you are traveling alone or with friends or family.

What to Expect When Booking Our Combination Africa and Egypt Tours

Our existing travel itineraries all begin in Cairo, the lively Egyptian capital. On arrival at the airport in Cairo, your trip manager and a driver meet you and they will transfer you to the hotel where you will be staying for the duration of your stay in Cairo. We always book our clients into good 4 or 5 star hotels to ensure that their stay is as comfortable and as pleasant as possible.

Nearly all of our itineraries include either two or three nights in Cairo. During you time in Cairo, your Expert guide and a driver will take you to see and explore some of the best attractions in and around Cairo. Sightseeing in Cairo always begins with a visit to the ancient Giza necropolis to see Egypt’s legendary pyramids, the Sphinx and the Valley Temple.

We also take you to see the amazing Egyptian Museum and the immensely popular Khan el Khalili Bazaar which is located in a part of the city known as Islamic Cairo. Depending on which one of our trips you book, you also be taken to see the famous Step Pyramid which was built for Pharaoh Djoser. Located just a short drive from Cairo, and close to the ancient Egyptian capital of the Old Kingdom, the Step Pyramid was the very first pyramid ever built by the ancient Egyptians.

Lunches at good local restaurants during Cairo excursions are included in most of our travel itineraries. After the Cairo phase of your trip, we then fly you to Luxor or Aswan for your magical 5-Star Nile cruise. Your trip along the Nile is as much about sightseeing as it is about leisure and relaxation. You can be sure that your guide will be taking you to see some of the country’s best ancient Egyptian monuments.

Some of the places you can look forward to seeing will be the Valley of Kings, Hatshepsut Temple, Luxor Temple and Karnak. All of these ancient marvels are located near modern-day Luxor. During your trip along the river you will also visit Egypt’s best-preserved ancient temple at Edfu, and also the ancient temple of Sobek and Horus at Kom Ombo, as well as the ancient Temple of Philae at Aswan.

When your sailing on the Nile comes to an end, you will then travel back to Cairo where you will spend one more night before flying out of Egypt.

Once you leave the Land of the Pharaohs the general theme of your trip will all depend on which country you travel to next. If your next destination is Kenya or Tanzania, then almost your entire trip will now be devoted to game spotting drives. These will take place in some of the world’s best and most famous nature reserves, including the Masai Mara National Park in Kenya and the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania.

If, on the other hand, your trip takes you to Morocco or Dubai, most of your time will be spent sightseeing by way of professionally guided tours, most of which are city tours. Regardless of which one of our travel packages you book, you will enjoy the same high quality and the same excellent level of customer service throughout your trip. You will always have an experienced guide with you; you will always be staying in excellent hotels, and your transport during transfers and sightseeing trips will be clean, modern, and air-conditioned.

This was such a well organized and executed tour and I still can’t believe how much I saw in a relatively short period of time! It was an incredible experience! We were taken care of from the moment we landed at the airport to the moment we were dropped off at the airport. I always felt safe and taken care of. The hotels and food were both excellent! I felt so lucky to have Mo as our guide. He was so knowledgeable and I learned so much from him. I also appreciated all of the helpful tips Mo provided related to handling vendors and staying safe. Mo also made sure we optimized our time. Mo is a wonderful tour guide and person!

Queen Cleopatras is a great tour, highly recommended, Anas is a great guide, he explained everything about Egyptian culture and toke care about our group! I will recommend to head office to deliver schedules with the tours to be able to plan our days. Cruse was amazing, service is great and everyone is very friendly! Also there is laundry available at your room! Ruby II is a great option, the room is very nice! I won’t recommend to take the train from Cairo to Aswan, service is great but services are not good (very old and dirty), washrooms very dirty!

10 Day Egypt Experience Tour (Domestic flight)

My recent Egypt trip with Vacations To Go Travel was truly unforgettable! Just like my travel companion, I thoroughly enjoyed every moment. Bassem, our guide, was exceptional, and the Nile cruise was a highlight. Despite the early start for day tours, especially during Ramadan when days were shorter, I didn't regret traveling during that month. Ramadan turned out to be a wonderful experience! The hotel in Cairo provided iftar arrangements at sunset, and it was heartwarming to see locals joining in. The decorations for this holy month, both at the hotel and in the streets, added a special touch to our stay, particularly in Luxor and Aswan. Exploring the local culture and observing the deep connection the Egyptian people have to their religion, beliefs, and traditions was a highlight for me. Their kindness and friendliness were truly remarkable. I also loved the concept of free food on tables in the streets across every city in Egypt—it's a beautiful display of community spirit. I can't wait to return and explore more. Thank you, Vacations To Go Travel, for an incredible journey! - Aliyah

Cairo travel guide

The largest city in Africa and the hub of the Arab world, Cairo is a diverse and fascinating metropolis. Over 19 million residents live in this booming, bustling capital city, with more arriving each year from the countryside. Dive into the swirling mass and you’ll uncover amid the noise and chaos an absorbing city of extraordinary treasures, including the jewel in the crown, the Egyptian Museum .

Exploring Cairo

Larger than any other city in the Middle East or Africa, Cairo stretches ever further along the east bank of the Nile for more than 35km (20 miles), guarding the head of the Delta and marking the division between Upper and Lower Egypt (Lower Egypt being the Delta in the north, as the Nile flows from south to north). Across the river is Giza, home to the Pyramids , technically a separate administrative district, but part of the same urban agglomeration as Cairo.

In the river between Cairo and Giza are two islands: Roadah, formed out of bed-rock, which has been the site of human settlement since ancient times, and Gazirah, formed alluvially within the past six centuries, where the suburb of Zamalik has grown up since 1870.

While Cairo seems to be one vast urban sprawl, if you break it down into its neighbourhoods it is in fact quite manageable. Downtown is the centre for business, the Egyptian Museum and five-star tourist hotels along the Nile. To the east lie the labyrinthine roads of Islamic Cairo, with beautiful mosques and many architectural gems. To the south is where you will find the Coptic community and Cairo’s oldest synagogue, while to the west is cosmopolitan Zamalik, home to the fashion-conscious with trendy cafés, restaurants, boutiques and clubs.

Cairo Travel Guide + 12 Things To Do In Cairo

Updated December 2023, Cairo Travel Guide + 12 Things To Do In Cairo was originally written in March 2020

I hadn’t set the bar high for Cairo. It was of utmost importance on 10-year-old me’s travel bucket list, but as an adult, my interest in Cairo had waned. Especially after just how downright nuts Marrakech was, I wasn’t too thrilled about giving Egypt or the North Africa region another chance.

Cairo was a pleasant surprise, I actually enjoyed it- I’ve now visited three times and can honestly say I don’t find it anywhere near as aggressive and tout-laden as Marrakech, but do be warned that this all does go on here and I’m fully aware that everyone will a different experience, so keep that in mind.

I will say that each and every time I’ve been back to Cairo I’ve had countless locals offer to help me or just give me a warm welcome to their country.

So before I get carried away, here are the best things to do in Cairo to add to your itinerary and general Cairo travel guide. If you’re looking for guided adventures, check out these Cairo tour packages and for the remainder of the country these Egypt tour packages .

12 Things To Do In Cairo

In all honesty, I’d say 5 days is a good amount of time to dedicate to Cairo to hit the highlights without feeling too rushed, but know you could actually spend much longer in the city depending on your interests.

I know that sounds like a lot of time, but trust me there’s a lot to see here. If you don’t have that much time, say 2-3 days I’d be selective of what you truly want to see and cherry-pick the best things to do in Cairo for your needs.

Pyramids of Giza, Giza Pyramids, Khafre, Khafre Pyramid, Sphynx, Sphinx, Giza, Cairo, Egypt

Visit The Pyramids of Giza

Of course, no visit to Cairo would be complete without a visit to the world-famous Pyramids of Giza. I’m a bit of a pessimist, so I didn’t get my hopes up for my first visit to the Giza Pyramids- but wow- they’re definitely worth a visit.

Despite the site being as famous as it is, it doesn’t feel too awfully crowded, especially if you visit in the morning when they open.

Adventures of Nicole, Adventures of Lil Nicki, Pyramids of Giza, Giza Pyramids, Khafre, Khafre Pyramid, Sphynx, Sphinx, Giza, Cairo, Egypt

With all this said there is one glaring annoyance about visiting Giza- there are touts literally everywhere. This is the only place in and around Cairo I find them truly obnoxious, but hey- it is the country’s biggest tourist attraction.

I will say that if you do want to visit with a guide and/or take camels (or ATVs) around the pyramids I highly recommend booking a tour in advance  here , or via your accommodation. If you try and hire someone off the street, you’ll more than likely pay an  EXTREMELY  inflated price.

The price for admission to the Giza Pyramid Complex is 200 EGP per person. Entry to go inside the Great Pyramid (Khufu) is 400 EGP, entry to the Solar Boat Museum is 100 EGP, and the Pyramids Sound and Light Show is 300 EGP.

Check out the best Pyramids of Giza tours

Pyramids of Giza, Giza Pyramids, Khufu, Khufu Pyramid, Giza, Cairo, Egypt, camel, camel Giza, camel Khufu, camel pyramid Sahara, North Africa, Africa

Depending on your level of interest in the pyramids, this could be as little as a half-day excursion or take an entire day. On my second visit to the Pyramids of Giza, I spent nearly all day there from about 10 am to 5 pm.

If you only want to make a half-day of it I recommend  combining it with a trip to Saqqara  to visit the Step Pyramid of Djoser (or a combo day trip of  Giza, Saqqara, and Dahshur  if you wanna see all the pyramids and are short on time in Cairo).

For epic photos of the pyramids without the crowds get to the pyramids early (especially like the one of me in front of the Sphinx with Khafre Pyramid behind me) get there at 8 am when the Pyramids of Giza open. Most tour buses don’t start showing up until 10-11 am so you’ll have a little time before the larger crowds appear.

I highly recommend staying in Giza the night before you plan to visit the pyramids.

Gorge on Egyptian Food

I won’t lie- one of the things I am always most excited about when returning to Egypt is the food, as Egypt is one of my favorite food countries in the world.

Egyptian cuisine has a heavy influence from its Eastern Mediterranean neighbors  Cyprus , Lebanon, Greece, Palestine/Israel,  Turkey , and so on.

Some uniquely Egyptian dishes to try are

  • Koshari- a conglomeration of carbohydrates drizzled in a spicy tomato sauce and vinegar
  • Ful medames- mashed fava beans with garlic, cumin, olive oil, and lemon (origins are debated)
  • Domty- a salty soft white cheese eaten since ancient times; stuffed pigeon
  • Aish baladi- an Egyptian flatbread. Of course, staples around the Eastern Mediterranean are widely available- taamia (falafel), tahina, kofta, kebab, shwarma, and dolma

Stuffed Pigeon, Egyptian Stuffed Pigeon, Felfela, Felfela Cairo, Egyptian food

Some of my favorite restaurants in Cairo include  Felfela ,  Kebabgy Grill ,  Saqqara Restaurant  (Saqqara), and  Andrea El Harem Restaurant  (Giza). If you’re looking to try kosheri head to  Abou Tarek Koshari , which is widely known as the best.

For cheap and quick food my favorites in Cairo are,  Gad Fastfood  and the food stalls (many have a small area with tables and chairs too) along  Gawhar al Qa’ed Street  at Khan El Khalili across from the Al-Azhar University (they look dodgy, but they’re so good).

Step Pyramid of Djoser, Saqqara, Cairo, Egypt, North Africa, Africa

Explore The Pyramids of  Saqqara with an Egyptologist

Saqqara is a pyramid complex located about 30 kilometers south of Cairo, which once served as the necropolis for the ancient city of Memphis. The ancient Egyptian necropolis is also home to the oldest pyramid in the world, the Step Pyramid of Djoser, constructed between 2670–2650 BC by architect Imhotep.

The Saqqara Complex can easily take an entire day to see all the sights depending on your level of interest, but if you’re not a huge Egyptian history buff you can easily see the highlights in 3-4 hours.

If you are opting to see Saqqara in a shorter span of time it would be wise to  combo your day trip with the nearby Dahshur Pyramid Complex .

Entry to Saqqara and Imhotep Museum is 180 EGP.

Saqqara, hieroglyphics, Cairo, Egypt, North Africa, Africa

I felt that with a history so rich and because the hieroglyphics I found to be so colorful and well intact, I personally felt that if you’re going to splurge for a guided trip with an Egyptologist, Saqqara would be my choice.

Some of the highlights to see in Saqqara to see include: the Step Pyramid of Djoser, the Pyramid of Teti, the Pyramid of Unas, Serapeum, the Tomb of Ankhma Hor, The Tomb of Mereruka, and the Imhotep Museum.

Ibn Talun Mosque, Mosque of Ibn Talun, Ibn Talun, Cairo, Egypt, Islamic Cairo, North Africa, Africa

See Islamic Cairo

Islam, of course, has a deep-rooted history in Cairo as well as greater Egypt. Islamic elements can be witnessed all over Cairo, so the name ‘Islamic Cairo’ is a bit of a misnomer, however, Islamic Cairo is known for its mosques, madrasas, mausoleums, and souqs.

Head over to Al-Muizz Al-Deen Street to start your adventure into Islamic Cairo. Destinations not to miss in Islamic Cairo include are Ibn Tulun Mosque, Sultan Hassan Mosque, Bab Zuweila, and Al Azhar Mosque.

For female travelers in Cairo, I generally recommend modest dress as that is the norm around Egypt with at least shoulders and knees covered- and especially when visiting Islamic Cairo and any holy sites. A scarf is handy to keep in your bag for covering shoulders or if you need to cover your hair when entering a mosque.

Sultan Hassan Mosque, Cairo, Egypt, Islamic Cairo, North Africa, Africa

If you’re planning to do Islamic Cairo in the afternoon, I’d recommend enjoying the sunset over at Al Azhar Park and listening to the muezzins sing out the call to prayer from the surrounding mosques. Following the call to prayer, go have dinner and then head over to Khan el Khalili Souq next.

Shop at Khan el Khalili Souq

So, as you just read in the previous section, Khan el Khalili (in my opinion) is best enjoyed in the evening. During the day it’s jam-packed with tourists, but in the evenings you’ll find Egyptian families shopping and watching the evening go by at cafes.

If you’re into photography, I’d recommend getting a second visit in on your trip to Khan el Khalili, however in the earlier part of the day (9 am-11 am) as the souq is quite photogenic and the light is usually beautiful at that time. Several beautiful mosques, madrasas, and complexes can be found inside the Khan el Khalili area including Al-Hussein Mosque, Al-Aqmar Mosque, and Qalawun Complex.

Khan el Khalili, Khan el Khalili Souq, Khan el Khalili Souk, Khan el Khalili Bazaar, souk, souq, bazaar, Cairo, Egypt, Islamic Cairo, North Africa, Africa

Of course, if you were planning to do any shopping, Khan el Khalili is the place to do it. Be aware that many of the souvenirs in the more touristy sections of the souq are likely made in  China , but if you wander off the main thoroughfares enough you’ll get more into the local wares.

Another favorite thing of mine to do while at Khan el Khalili is to just chill at a cafe, order a coffee or tea, (occasionally a shisha) and just people watch part of an afternoon away.

Hanging Church, Hanging Church Cairo, Coptic Church, Coptic Cairo, Cairo, Egypt, North Africa, Africa

Check out Coptic Cairo

Although most foreigners associate Islam as being the religion in Egypt (which is the dominant religion in the country), Egypt does have a long and fascinating Christian history as well.

Copts are an ethnoreligious group, predominantly found in Egypt, Sudan, and Libya, and have a rich history in the region which very much warrants a visit to Coptic Cairo while in the city.

Must-sees in Coptic Cairo, of course, include the Hanging Church and Abu Sega Church. The Jewish quarter of Cairo and the Ben Ezra Synagogue are worth including as part of your visit to Coptic Cairo as it’s nearby.

There is a Coptic Museum by the Hanging Church and Abu Sega, admission is 100 EGP.

Discover The Dahshur Pyramids

I recently wrote an entire post about the  Pyramids of Dahshur , and to be quite honest it was an absolute highlight of my third visit to Cairo.

Upon my arrival, I was presently surprised to not see a tout in sight, and encountered about six whole tourists there during the duration of my visit.

According to the officer working the day I visited, the Dahshur Pyramids had only recently reopened to the public in the summer of 2019.

At both Red Pyramid and Bent Pyramid, you can enter into the chamber via a long and narrow tunnel. As mentioned earlier in this post, the  Dahshur Pyramids are a perfect addition for a day trip to nearby Saqqara .

Entry to the Dahshur Pyramids is 60 EGP.

Visit The Egyptian Museum Of Antiquities

The salmon-pink colored Egyptian Museum of Antiquities on chaotic el Tahrir Square houses countless artifacts showcasing Egypt’s rich and fascinating history.

In late 2020 the Grand Egyptian Museum (within walking distance of the Giza Pyramid Complex) is slated to open and will be the largest museum in the world. Many exhibitions and artifacts from the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities have already been relocated to their new home in the GEM. Once the GEM does open, the Museum of Antiquities will close its doors.

Admission to the Egyptian Museum is currently 160 EGP, + 50 EGP if you’d like to take photos inside. The Mummy Room at the Egyptian Museum is an additional 180 EGP.

Pigeon towers, Pigeon houses, Garbage City, Manshiyat Nasser, Zabbaleen, Coptic Christian, Coptic Cairo, Cairo, Egypt, North Africa, Africa

See the Recycling at Garbage City

Garbage City (Manshiyat Nasser) is a district located on the outskirts of Cairo, famous for its, well… garbage.

Cairo is the most populous city in the Arab world, with about 20 million people calling the city home. Despite Cairo being the largest city in the Arab world and among the most populous cities on Earth, until more recently, there had never been a formal garbage collection system in place for the Cairo Metropolitan Area.

This is where the Manshiyat Nasser district (nicknamed Garbage City) comes into play.

For roughly the last 70 or so years the heavily Coptic Christian population of the district have served as unofficial garbage collectors. Referred to as Zabbaleen (meaning  garbage people ), the men who function as the cities informal garbage collectors, go around the city collecting Cairo residents’ trash door-to-door for a nominal fee.

They then use donkey-drawn carts and small trucks to transport the garage back to Manshiyat Nasser. Once back to Garbage City, women and children sort through the trash collection to find recyclable materials and items, recycling an impressive 80-90% of the garbage collected.

Cairo now does have private trash collection service companies that compete with the Zabbaleen of Manshiyat Nasser. With that said visiting Garbage City and seeing the work unfold here is truly fascinating.

If you plan to venture out to Garbage City, I would definitely recommend that you visit the Monastery of Saint Simon while you’re in the area.

Monastery of Saint Simon, Monastery of Saint Simon the Tanner, Garbage City, Manshiyat Nasser, Zabbaleen Church, Coptic Church, Coptic Christian, Coptic Cairo, Cairo, Egypt, North Africa, Africa

Appreciate the Uniqueness of The Monastery Of Saint Simon

The Monastery of Saint Simon is one of the largest and most fascinating Christian churches located in the Middle East & North Africa. Serving as a place of worship to the Zabbaleen inhabitants of Manshiyat Nasser, the Monastery of Saint Simon is located in the Mokattam cliffs that back up to the district.

The monastery is actually built right into a large cave within the cliffs with the capacity to fit 2,000 worshippers within. Other caves nearby have been fashioned into Christian churches too, and have since been linked, creating a unique Christian center within Garbage City.

Citadel Of Saleh Ad-Din

The Citadel of Saleh Ad-Din is a medieval Islamic fortress located right in the heart of Cairo, built under the reign of Saleh Ad-Din, a Kurdish Sunni, who served as the first sultan of Egypt & Syria under the Ayubbid Dynasty. The Cairo Citadel served as the seat of power in Egypt and housed its rulers from the 13-19th centuries.

While visiting, don’t miss the Mosque of Mohammed Ali Pasha inside the citadel, as well as the Hypostyle Mosque of al-Nasir Muhammad and the Mosque of Suleyman Pasha. The National Military Museum, Al-Gawhara Palace Museum, Carriage Museum, and the Police Museum are also worth paying a visit to.

Admission to the Citadel is 180 EGP.

Take A Felucca Ride On The Nile

This is the one thing on the list I haven’t actually done while in Cairo, but have been meaning to do! Felucca are a traditional sailboat used for over a millennia to journey up and down the Nile River.

Of course, you can take a felucca ride day or night, but the best time to take one is in the late afternoon to catch the sunset over the Nile and watch the city as it lights up afterward. You can book a felucca trip  here  on Viator.

Where To Stay In Cairo

In Downtown Cairo, my personal favorite is the  Steigenberger  (okay, I’ll admit, I’m usually in Cairo at the end of a lovely  Socotra  expedition and am looking to crash in a cushy room… and also I’m there for the epic breakfast buffet).

For those keeping to a smaller budget, a good friend of mine raved about the  Holy Sheet Hostel  (and to be honest I met up with her in there one day- it is an excellent deal for the price).

In Giza, I highly recommend the Hayat Pyramids View Hotel – the rooms have amazing views right out to the Pyramids. They serve a pretty hefty and delicious breakfast that is included in the price of your room.

How To Get Around Cairo

Uber & taxi.

Navigating Cairo isn’t all too difficult. Uber and Careem are both efficient and relatively inexpensive for getting around the city and to/from the airport.

Another great option for female travelers is to use  Pink Taxi , a ladies-only taxi service startup based in Cairo. You can book a Pink Taxi by downloading their app ( Android   |   Apple ).

I’d advise using Uber, Careem, or Pink Taxi over trying to get taxis off the street for safety reasons and because many times taxi drivers will try to overcharge tourists.

Cairo Metro, Cairo Metro Station, Cairo, Egypt, El Marg, El Marg Station

Cairo Metro

The Cairo Metro is also a cheap and efficient way to get around the city as Cairo’s traffic can be mind-bogglingly horrendous, but I would recommend avoiding it during morning and evening rush-hour times (7-9 am and 4-7 pm).

I found the Cairo Metro easy enough to navigate myself without much to any issue. There are women-only cars on metro trains (like in  Iran  and the UAE) that can be a great option for women traveling solo wanting to avoid potential harassment.

Check out the official Cairo Metro page  here , and this handy informational page  here .

A single ride costs 3-10 EGP depending on distance, tickets can be purchased at the desk upon entering the station. You will need to tell the ticket agent which station you’ll be going to. Note that you cannot reach every major attraction in Cairo by metro.

Meekrobas (Minibus)

Meekrobas are minibusses that are commonly used by locals to get between main destinations. Their destinations aren’t marked and can be quite confusing to communicate where you want to go, though in my experience I’ve found Cairenes quite helpful and friendly and have always found someone that could assist in getting me going in the right direction.

Rides cost 2-5 EGP depending on the distance. You’ll take a seat, communicate where you need to get off (usually by hand gestures- this is where you’ll need some assistance by kind locals), and then pass your money up to the driver (similar to on a marshrutka in  Eastern Europe  and  Central Asia ) and change will be passed back to you.

Arriving At Cairo Airport

I without a doubt, recommend either ordering an Uber, Careem, or Pink Taxi to pick you up after you arrive at Cairo Airport, or prebooking an airport shuttle  here , or directly with  Cairo Shuttle Bus . If you will be using Uber, Pink Taxi, or Careem you’ll need to go to a parking lot that is located outside Terminal 2 and 3.

Follow the signs to parking lot B5 or C2, you’ll need to take an elevator or stairs to get down to the lot. One thing I will say with my experience using Uber in Cairo is that many drivers speak only Arabic so if you need to communicate something with the driver through the app prior to pick up it can be a little tricky.

I also recommend either memorizing Arabic numerals, or having a sheet downloaded on your phone showing Arabic to Roman numerals as Egyptian license plates are written using Arabic numerals, but the app will give the driver’s plate numbers in Roman numerals.

Best Restaurants In Cairo

I did mention gorging on Egyptian food a must-do experience on any trip to Cairo earlier in this post, but here is a list of some of my favorite Egyptian food hot spots:

Downtown Cairo Restaurants

Felfela :  I’ve yet to order anything at Felfela I didn’t like. I always order their tahini along with taamia (they have several varieties). You can’t go wrong with the lentil soup, full medames, kofta, or mixed grill either. If you want to try a specialty, get the stuffed pigeon. On the backside of the main Felfela Restaurant, there is a Felfela Express serving up an array of the simpler items off their menu, including shwarma.

Kebabgy Grill :  Located on the banks of the Nile in the Sofitel, this is an upper-scale restaurant, but the food, in my experience was lovely. All of their hot and cold mezze are delicious. For entrees, some of my favorites include the kofta, chicken kabsah, and the seafood grill.

Abou Tarek Koshari :  This is where you need to go to try the national dish of Egypt: Koshari. Abou Tarek is pretty well known for serving up (arguably) the best koshari in Cairo.

Saqqara Restaurants

Saqqara Restaurant :  It can feel a bit like tourist-central with large tour groups stopping off here for lunch on day tours to Saqqara and Memphis, but they serve up a simple and decent Egyptian menu.

Giza Restaurants

Andrea El Harem Restaurant :  Serving up typical Middle Easter fare in Giza, with decent views of the pyramids.

Best Fast Food In Cairo

Gad Fastfood :  I met a chatty Uber driver (actually quite an interesting man) who recommended Gad Fastfood to me and some friends. It seems daunting when you walk into the ground level where cooks are slinging dishes with a frenzy of local fans putting in takeaway orders. As you glance up you’ll notice the menu is in Arabic, but don’t let that put you off. Head upstairs to the main dining area to sit down and put in an order (that is unless of course, you feel comfortable putting in a takeaway order in Arabic!). The food is cheap, plentiful, and good.

Food stall cafes along Gawhar al Qa’ed Street at Khan El Khalili across from Al-Azhar University :  I hired a car on my last day during my last trip to Cairo to go out to the  Dahshur Pyramids , and within a couple of hours me and my driver were basically best friends. I needed to make a stop at Khan el Khalili before heading for the airport to depart and I asked Mohammed what the best place for taamia (Egyptian falafel) and tahina was there. Well fast forward and we met up with his family along Gawhar al Qa’ed Street where we sat down for probably the best taamia, tahina, and ful medames I’ve ever had. If you want drinks you’ll need to pop into a shop along the street for juice, water, or soft drinks. These little hole-in-the-wall stalls don’t usually have names and look a little dirty- but then again that’s never stopped me either.

Khan el Khalili, Khan el Khalili Souq, Khan el Khalili Souk, Khan el Khalili Bazaar, souk, souq, bazaar, Cairo, Egypt, Islamic Cairo, North Africa, Africa

Best Bars In Cairo

Cafe Riche :  A renowned Cairo landmark located in the downtown area that opened in 1908. Cafe Riche has served as a meeting place for intellectuals and revolutionaries over the years. Most intellectuals tend to meet and form discussions online now, however, it’s still a fun experience to grab a drink with friends in the evening here. Note that smoking is permitted inside.

Cairo Jazz Club :  The best place in Cairo to head for live music that serves great cocktails to boot. Don’t let the name fool you though, Cairo Jazz Club hosts artists that span the musical spectrum including local acts and international bands.

  • In all honesty, the most dangerous thing you’ll do in Cairo is cross the street, it really feels like a game of chicken at first… but after a few days (and likely a few instructional lessons from Cairenes who take you under their wing), you’ll be walking like an Egyptian in no time. If you still don’t trust your abilities to cross on your own in a busy area, just find a local trying to cross and follow their lead- they generally are pretty good at this.
  • Occasional harassment does occur on the streets for female travelers, but in my experience, it’s been pretty light- I can think of one time I was whistled at and that’s been about it. However, it does happen at times so do try to be aware of your surroundings.
  • Petty crime, along with bag snatchings and pickpocketing do happen periodically in Cairo in busy centers like Khan el Khalili, metro stations, and on buses.
  • There are tourist police offices in Khan el Khalili, downtown, Giza, and inside the citadel. If you are a victim of crime, report to the tourist police rather than the regular police.
  • Cairo is known for their crafty touts. In my experience, they’re a lot rifer in Giza than anywhere in Cairo, but you do find them in Khan el Khalili and downtown. Just be on guard for anyone wanting to randomly befriend you especially in touristy areas, many times they’re just trying to lure you into a shop. I can say though I’ve met numerous friendly Cairenes that just approach to have a conversation and make small talk, so don’t write off everyone as a potential tout.
  • Cairo can be extremely hot in the summer, so sun protection, drinking enough water, and breaking to rest especially midday are especially important. Temperatures in June-August can hover around 35 C (95 F) during the day.
  • Spring (March-April) and fall (October-November) are when temperatures are most pleasant to visit Cairo as well as the rest of Egypt.
  • The winter months of December-February can make for a great vacation if you don’t mind cooler temps (9-16 C | 48-60 F), With that said, its best to avoid dates around the Christmas holiday as it corresponds with school breaks for Europe, Australia, and the Americas).
  • Dressing modestly is the best practice as Cairo is a fairly conservative city. For women, making sure knees and shoulders are covered and for men having trousers that hit below the knee (if not opting for pull length pants) are great choices, especially for visiting holy sites.

3 thoughts on “cairo travel guide + 12 things to do in cairo”.

I stayed at Panorama pyramids inn in Giza after reading the recommendation on this blog, and have to say I was fairly dissappointed, to the point that I actually had to move to a different hotel. Yes, the food and the view is fine, but the problem is that it is extremely noisy. Dogs barking and yelling (lots of them), cars honking, people talking and hussling, tour buses idling: It´s all in your room because it takes place right outside and the windows literally do not close. And on your right hand side you have all the noise from the reception and the stairs, because the doors have zero soundproofing.

Some of the staff felt pushy, kind of weirdly overwelcoming, as if they were trying to cover over something. When i asked the reception when the ticket office to the pyramids opened I was told 8 when I in fact, 5 minutes later, I could confirm 5 that it opened 7 (this proximity to the pyramids might be the only reason to stay there). This was of course a scam to lure me along on one of the overpriced hotel tours (“Why hurry? Have breakfast, relax”).The whole place had a dodgy feeling, despite best, and obviously sincere efforts from individual staff members. Only recommended if you´re staying for one night and planning to go to the pyramids at opening hour and then leave. And I would seriously reconsider visiting the pyramids altogether. Sadly, the way the egyptian authorities has allowed a city to creep right up to them, and then turning the area itself into a fairground is nothing but the world´s most epic tourist trap (which is fairly fascinating to observe in itself, and, if nothing else, perhaps the best reason to go there). Egypt has so many exciting things to offer over this. With regard to this, the recommendation to visit Dashur and Saqqara turned into a highlight of my trip.

Sorry to hear about the not so great experience at the Panorama Pyramids. Last time I stayed there was coming back from Socotra in early March of 2020, so Giza was nearly empty. I was in Giza for a couple of nights this past January and stayed over at the Hayat Pyramids View because they had triple rooms and that’s what we needed. The Giza Pyramids of course I think will always suffer the annoyance of touts and all unless maybe some regulations are instated. Dahshur was still nice and quiet this year, only a handful of others there.

Very interesting site! There is a mistake in a photo above: You present a church as the St. Sergius and Bacchus, but actually this is the St. George Greek Orthodox church. The St. Sergius and Bacchus church is at a distance of about 400-500 m, and it is much smaller. I am a Cairo inhabitant.

The best way to discover  Egypt ’s tombs and temples is by cruise boat. The  Nile   River  is the life-blood of the country and its banks are an oasis within a sea of desert landscape. The river has been the centre of life within Egypt for millennia and as a result most of the country’s fascinating cities, temples and ancient ruins are within just a few kilometres of its banks. You will also see picturesque villages, local farmers on donkeys and buffalo coming down to the water to drink. The most popular section to cruise is between  Luxor  and  Aswan . Cruises between these two cities can range from between 2 to 5 nights.

How long is a Nile River Cruise?

Most Nile cruise itineraries operate between  Luxor  and  Aswan  and range from between 2 to 5 nights. For avid cruise enthusiasts there are a handful of longer cruises between  Cairo  and  Aswan  of up to 14 nights in length.

When is the best time to visit Egypt?

Egypt is best explored during the cooler months from October to April, however you can still travel during the summer season (May to September) but temperatures are at their highes t – often well over 35 degrees Celsius . The Christmas/New Year period is particularly busy and this is also the most  expensive time of year to travel (booked well in advance). The best time of year to visit is from mid-to-late January through to March when the days are usually sunny, warm and crowd numbers are a little down on their peak.

Why should I visit Egypt?

Egypt  is a destination in itself; offering travellers a mouth-watering combination of ancient history, diverse cultures, awe-inspiring architectural wonders and relaxing river cruising.  This  exotic  destination  is also perfect for sun-seekers with warm, dry days for most of the year.  The scenery is unique, with the mighty  Nile   River  creating swathes of lush greenery amid vast expanses of stark desert.

What is the climate in Egypt?

Cairo  has a milder climate than the southern part of  Egypt ; however temperatures between May-Oct may reach 30°-36°C. The rest of the year is warm to mild, and it can get quite cold on winter nights. Although  fairly  hot all year round,  Luxor  and  Aswan  experience their most extreme temperatures from June-August (30°-45°C). Nights are cool in winter and hot in summer (24°-26°C).

What can I combine Egypt with?

Egypt is best combined with neighbouring Jordan and Israel. Both countries compliment a visit to Egypt with further historic Middle-Eastern sights such as Petra, Bethlehem and Jerash. A little further afield, the United Arab Emirates and Oman are other popular destinations to visit. Alternatively Egypt can be combined with a safari in Tanzania – perfect during the months of December to March.

How to get to Egypt?

There are regular flights between Egypt’s capital Cairo and the Middle East as well as many major European cities. The country’s chief carrier – Egypt Air – also fly to North American cities including New York and Toronto. Egypt Air also offer internal connecting flights to major hubs including Luxor, Aswan and Abu Simbel.

US  – There are plenty of options to choose from when travelling between North America and Egypt. Egypt Air offer direct flights to Cairo from both Washington DC and New York. Alternatively European airlines to consider with just one stopover include British Airways, Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines.

Europe  – Egypt is easily reached with direct flights between Cairo and almost every European airlines major carrier. Alternatively Egypt Air fly to over 20 cities across Europe.

The Perfect One to Two Day Itinerary For Cairo, Egypt

Cairo is the largest city in Egypt , as well as the Arab world with over 9m people calling it home. It has stood for thousands of years on the same site on the Nile river and is home to the world famous Pyramids of Giza and Egyptian Museum.

Pyramids of Giza Egypt

There is a so much more to see in the capital city as well but the majority of visitors will use Cairo as the main entry point of the country before wondering off to other parts of the country. I’ve been to Cairo three times now and have done it numerous ways but all in all, one to two days is enough to see the highlights of this city. Some people ask if they need to spend any time at all in Cairo. My answer to that is  absolutely . The ancient Pyramids are here and it would be a travesty to visit Egypt without seeing the Pyramids!

Read about my visit to the other temples and palaces in Egypt, as well as my guide to traveling through Egypt.

This is largely what I think would be the perfect way to spend a full day (with or without an evening hotel somewhere) by visiting the following:

  • Great Pyramids of Giza
  • Lunch at a Koshary restaurant
  • Egyptian Museum
  • Great Mosque of Muhammad Ali

Dinner in Zamalek

Is cairo safe.

Since the Egyptian Revolution in 2009, tourism has plummeted. What a shame as so many people depend on the tourism industry. Is it safe? Yes absolutely. Most people just have preconceived notions and prejudices of what an Arab country might be like and have watched too much garbage media. I wrote is Egypt safe in detail here. Because everyone’s scared to visit Egypt nowadays, already cheap prices have come down even more. Their loss, your gain.

I will say that the only time I didn’t feel safe is when I was in a taxi with crazy drivers weaving through even more crazy traffic. That is the way it is here though and I came out unscathed. I do, however, not recommend jaywalking across large intersections.

Use Uber in Cairo. Period.

The first time I visited Egypt was before Uber. Cabs are a nightmare to deal with. They are famous for ripping off tourists even though they have working meters. They will routinely say the meters broken and attempt to charge 1000+ LE for a ride from the airport to the unsuspecting tourist. It was such a pain trying to negotiate and argue with the drivers and overall just not a pleasant way to start off a trip.

Download and use Uber. Period. It will save you so much time, money, and general headaches. To put it in perspective, an Uber from the airport to Giza, a 1+ hr car ride, was 150 LE!! Overall, I took Uber’s all around Cairo and never paid more than 80 LE for a trip. This makes sense as wages are lower and gas is extremely cheap.

Alternatively, there is the app Careem, which is the Middle East’s version of Uber. Also safe and recommended.

Where to stay

There are no shortage of accommodation options in Cairo. Egypt is very much adept in its tourism industry and has countless options to choose from. I’ve stayed in downtown Cairo by the museum, Zamalek (the ritzy expat area), and Giza. For those with one night, I would recommend staying in Giza near the pyramids. This will allow you to go early in the morning beating the traffic and crowds as well as affording you this unbelievable view.

Guardian guest house rooftop views pyramids giza egypt

I stayed in  Guardian Guest House , which is literally across the street from the entrance to the pyramids. You literally cannot be any closer to the pyramids. This lovely guesthouse was basic but cheap and had everything we needed. We paid ~1,000 LE per night for the pyramid facing rooms. Whatever you do, pay the premium (if you can even call it that) for the pyramid rooms!

Pyramids giza view guardian guesthouse egypt cairo

The room quality will not be the Intercontinental or St Regis but the views from my rooftop and the room alone make it more worthwhile than anything else in the city. Plus I had front row seats from the rooftop for the night time light show!

night time light show pyramids giza cairo egypt

If you want something more luxurious, I’d recommend staying in and around the area area of Zamalek which is chalk full of high end hotels (at a very reasonable price) and loads of trendy restaurants. The Four Seasons on the Nile is a perfect place for those looking for more luxury and comfort.

Morning – Pyramids of Giza

On to the itinerary. Since I stayed literally a stones throw from the pyramids, I started my visit to the pyramids first thing in the morning when it opened at 8am.

Pyramids giza sphinx cairo egypt

For those that yet know, the Great Pyramids are in the city of Giza, which is right next to Cairo and is part of greater Cairo. A lot of people get confused and think the pyramids are in some far out remote desert oasis. Pictures are just manipulated in a way where it looks like you’re staring into the open Sahara but that couldn’t be further from reality.

Giza Pyramids with Sphinx

The Pyramids of Giza are in the city . It is surrounded by the city and everywhere you look, you’ll be able to see buildings and society. Regardless, they are still incredibly breathtaking to see. The fact that they have stood for 5000 years is an acknowledgement to the incredible ingenuity of the Ancient Egyptians.

The pyramids open at  8am  and close at  5pm  and are open 7 days a week. The entrance ticket is 120 LE, with additional costs required if you want to enter one of the pyramids or the Sphinx. I didn’t do either of these as the costs are considerably higher and they’re all just dark dusty rooms.

Riding a camel in the Pyramids

On my first visit to the Pyramids, I was on a budget tour with limited time spent at the pyramids. The second time, I told myself I should really ride a camel because it just looks kind of badass. Camels are not comfortable by any means  but I had to do it while I’m here. The guy at my guesthouse knew a guy (everyone knows someone) that did camel tours and would give me a good price.

pyramids of giza egypt camel ride

I was skeptical at first because these types of activities usually result in rip off city. Because we had 4 people in the group, they quoted me 200 LE per hour per camel. This was incredibly reasonable in my opinion! No hesitation and off we went on to the camels.

panorama viewpoint camels pyramids egypt

We ended up having the camel for three hours stopping at the Panorama viewpoint, and walking around the base of the pyramids. The Panaroma point is definitely the most iconic and picturesque of all the viewpoints. You can see the three smaller pyramids followed by the three larger pyramids: the Pyramid of Menkaure, the Pyramid of Khafre and the Great Pyramid of Khufu.

arab african travel cairo

You’re not traveling long distances so you definitely do not need a camel to take you around. They make for amazing photos, and other people will shower you with attention and takes your picture as well. I kind of felt like a celebrity.

I became good buddies with our guy Mohammed (to be honest I can’t remember his name, but 50% chance I guessed it right since that is how popular the name is in Egypt), and he ended up letting me ride the camel off on my own, as opposed to being in a single file line.

Lunch break

From the pyramids, take an Uber to Koshary Abou Tarek for lunch. Koshari is one of Egypt’s main staple dishes. It’s a vegetarian dish made from an unusual combination of rice, macaroni, lentils, chickpeas, garlic, onions, vinegar and a delicious sauce. It’s hard to describe to be honest but this is Egypt’s street dish of choice and is a must have when visiting.

koshary Abou Tarek Cairo Egypt

Koshary Abou Tarek is located within walking distance of the Egyptian Museum, the next destination on the itinerary.

Afternoon – Egyptian Museum

From Koshary Abou Tarek, it’s a 10 minute walk to the Egyptian Museum. The Egyptian museum, or the Museum of Cairo, houses an extensive collection of Egyptian artifacts. It is a huge museum with multiple floors of statues, papyrus, paintings, jewelry, and more. It is also home to the sarcophagus of King Tut, and is readily visible in the museum. It is constructed of 100kg of solid gold! That’s just his tomb!

egyptian museum cairo

The entrance to the museum is 120 LE. I’d highly recommend getting a guide, which are readily available for hire outside the museum. They do a good job explaining the history of Egypt and guide you through the countless artifacts within the museum. Otherwise, it can get overwhelming and you won’t get much out of it. We paid 200 LE for a private guide.

egyptian museum entrance

Mosque Mohammad Ali or the Mosque of Ibn Tulum

At this point, it might be quite late in the day. The sun usually sets around 5 to 5:30 so it’s best to leave the museum before 4pm if you want to see the mosque. The Great Mosque of Mohammad Ali is the largest mosque in Egypt. Although not as picturesque as the Blue Mosque in Istanbul,  it is still worth seeing if you’re need to see a Mosque. The architecture inside is spectacular, as with most mosques I’ve seen. Make sure to take off your shoes and dress accordingly.

Similarly, the Mosque of Ibn Tulum is also quite spectacular to see. It’s closer in distance than the Mosque of Mohammad Ali but you can’t go wrong with either option.

arab african travel cairo

From the Mosque or the Egyptian Museum, either head back to your hotel to freshen up, or head to dinner in Zamalek. Zamalek is the trendy part of the city. Located on its own island, it is filled with nice high rise apartments, trendy restaurants, bars, and offers great views of the city.

Upon the recommendation of friends, we went to a restaurant called  Sequoia.  It is located right on the northern tip of Zamalek and offers fantastic views of the city. The restaurant itself is fantastic, serving delicious Egyptian style food like hummus, grilled kebabs, fattah, and more. As in most other places in Egypt, people were smoking shishas with their dinner and we did too. Of all the countries I’ve been to in the Middle East, Egypt has the best, strongest, and cheapest shishas. If it’s warm out, try and get a table closer to the outside!

From Cairo, most people will either go south towards the temples of Luxor and Abu Simbel , or fly to the Sinai region to dive in the Red Sea. Some of my favorite diving in the world is in the Red Sea, particularly in Dahab and Sharm El Sheikh.

Dahab egypt red sea view

Egypt overall is one of my favorite places to visit. The scenery in the Red Sea is absolutely unreal and offers the cheapest scuba diving in the world . It’s also one of the cheapest countries I’ve ever been to. The food is delicious, people are nice, and it’s also next do Israel and Jordan with all its wonders.

Planning to visit Cairo in this Winter. This article is very informative for me.

Great article, Really appreciate your article, Thanks for sharing with us.

When I first came to Egypt, I was very excited to see the pyramids. When I got there, I was very surprised to find them so close to the city too. There are also buses that reach the site! But it is also kind of cool to feel in the middle of the desert and ancient monuments, and see the city on the other side. The pyramids remain awesome anyway. A little less awesome is that Pizza Hut in there, even if from their roof top you can have a BREATHTAKING view of the pyramids and sphinx. Worth to go to take beautiful picture

Hi summer! Yes definitely true. Think it is just got marketing on Egypt end to make the pyramids look like they’re in the middle of the desert. Just got camera angles. Nevertheless, it makes for great photos and it is still an incredible feat of human engineering!

Good blog, and fantastic writing, enjoy reading it very much

Egypt is really one of the best places to visit on the entire planet. One, who has been to Egypt more than 15 times, still can keep returning to see something new! I had visited Egypt with my family through a well-known travel agency . It was really an amazing tour for me. Great pyramid of Giza is one of the most wonderful places on the entire planet. It is the oldest and largest of the three pyramids in the Giza. It’s the oldest of the seven wonders of the ancient world, and the only one to remain largely intact. Appreciable post it is..!!! ????

Thank you! 15 times! That’s amazing. I’ve only been twice but I reckon it will be much more because the diving is fantastic.

Your blog is fantastic! Thanks for the information, we’re planning on going in February any idea how crowded it will be? Also it sounds like we can get a room at that hotel get up early and just go for it no tour guide needed? This is a well-informed post. Thank you for that. ❤

Hi Ava, yes you can definitely do that. The guy at my hotel “knew” a guy, and we negotiated that way for the camel tour. If you’re not interested in camels, no need to talk to anyone but to just walk straight inside.

Follow the road to the left, toward  the official entrance and the path

First You will see the Funerary Temple of Khafre

Continue on for a view of the Great Sphinx of Giza

…And continue on for a view of the great pyramids…

The first Pyramid you will see is the Great Pyramid of Khafre

arab african travel cairo

Whereas most visitors will walk onto the a platform guiding them, walk along the road, and veer off a bit just to where you can see behind the pyramids and you will have an excellent view of the Pyramid of Khafre and the smaller Pyramid of Menkaure

arab african travel cairo

To the right is the Pyramid of Khufu.  If you proceed toward southern side of the Khufu pyramid you will see a structure holding the ship (yes ship!) that brought the stones for the pyramids to Giza.  On the west side of the Khufu pyramid, you will see two large holes that the ships were excavated from.

Though you can enter the Khufu pyramid, the price is now 360 Egyptian Pounds (~$20 USD) and the interior looks much like the Funerary Temple of Khafre, so save your money and enjoy the impressive views from the outside.

arab african travel cairo

To put the grandness of the pyramids in perspective, this is how large each block is when you’re standing next to it.  Roughly 3 feet / 1 meter tall

Afteryou have satisfied your curiosity and grabbed the photos of a lifetime, grab anUber or Careem over to the Museum of Cairo.

  The Museum of Cairo

Now that you’ve seen impressive views that still baffle archaeologists, make sense of it by visiting the Museum of Cairo, also know as the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities.  With over 120,000 Egyptian antiquities on hand (not all on display) this experience is the perfect accent to witnessing the pyramids of Giza for yourself

Though the route seems a little off, head straight over from the pyramids as the museum closes at 5pmdaily, and traffic across Cairo can take an hour or more.

Afterexperiencing the museum, head over to Khan al-Khalil market, which is great tosee any time, day or night.

If you’re hunting for a guided tour consider a guided tour such as this tour through the museum and Tahrir Square

The Khan al-Khalili Market

Hopan Uber or Careem and have the driver drop you off near the Al-Husein mosque tostart your Egyptian market journey.  Uponentry, you will be in a square with foot traffic only and locals socializing,so enjoy the truly Egyptian ambiance. Admire the Al-Hussein mosque a bit and feel free to wander around.  Just type in “Al-Hussein mosque” in Google Maps to find out where you’ll start your wandering tour of the Khan al-Khalil market

arab african travel cairo

When you’re ready, punch in “Tahrir Square” into your Maps.Me or Google Maps and meander in that general direction, crossing between streets and alleys.  Along the way you will have a mind blowing experience with a slight touch of sensory overload.

arab african travel cairo

On the way, be sure to stop at the El-Fishawy coffee shop.

If you see any local crafts that you find more impressive than average, drop in and talk the craftsman.  I did this with a few pieces of interesting jewelry and decorative plates and the craftsman were very excited to share their work and how they go about it.

When your feet have had enough and your curiosity has been satisfied, hop another Uber and continue on to Tahrir square.  Or if you are truly hungry for the feeling of Cairo, just keep walking as the route will take you through a slew of contrasting neighborhoods all scattered with variants of “daily life” in Cairo.

Tahrir Square

Visit Tahrir Square , the site where the Egyptian revolution tookplace not in 2011.  For more perspective, watch the movie “TheSquare” (“Al Maydan” in Arabic), a documentary about the 2011 Egyptianrevolution

arab african travel cairo

After Tahrir Square, eat…

After experiencing the vibes of Tahrir Square, continue on to enjoy the trademark and unique foods of Cairo and the region: Koshari and Kufta Kebabs.

What to Eat in Cairo

Ifyou only eat one thing in Cairo, make it Kushari.  Kushari is not necessarily impressive, but itis a notoriously Egyptian dish.  If you asklocals of Cairo for the best Kushari restaurant you have two main options:

arab african travel cairo

  • Kushari Al Tahrir:The Fancy Kushari Place

Walk by any one ofthe Koshary Al Tahrir restaurants and you’ll immediately feel the more upscalevibe.  Rest assured though that thekushari is still authentic, notoriously delicious, and cheap

2. Abu Tarek: The”everyman’s Kushari”

Located on a slightly out of the way street populated by street side mechanics, Abu Tarek’s restaurant is absolutely the one locals will tell you to go to…and I will too.  With a full “large” meal running less than a dollar, this is a good experience, for your taste buds and your pockets.

arab african travel cairo

What is kushari anyways? (I had the same question on arrival)

Kushari is an Egyptian dish that dates back to the 1800’s and consists of rice, macaroni, and lentils  topped with tomato sauce, garlic vinegar, chickpeas, and fried onions.  I’m not sure if I was extremely hungry and delirious from 8 hours of walking, but this pseudo Italian mashup was quite delicious.

What do with the remainder of yor time? Wander.

Because much more of Cairo’s daily life and social scene takes place on city sidewalks than in the west, wandering through downtown Cairo ends up being much more entertaining than expected.  From the chaos of Khan al Khalili market (which I expected) to sitting outside in the middle of the street watching a Premier Club Liverpool football match – because “Mo-Salah” (Mohammaded Salah), a proud Egyptian is their Forward – wandering the streets of Cairo is an experience in its own.

Where to Travel After Cairo, Egypt

Egypt is a convenient end to a “ 10 day tour of the Middle East ” as it is thesouthernmost country in our 10 day journey. If you haven’t visited Lebanon, Israel, or Egypt, look into those asfollow on destinations.  If you have tasted the other countries in the region…

Head to Turkey for “ 10Days to Live in Turkey ”

Istanbul, Turkey's Hagia Sophia Church

Other Destination Options in Egypt (for staying longer)

  • Tombs at the Valley of the Kings
  • SCUBA Diving in the Red Sea for cheap
  • All-inclusive resorts in Sharm Al Sheikh

Getting Around Cairo

Ridesharing apps are the best options for moving cheaply and quickly (or as quickly as traffic will allow) through Cairo.  Due to Cairo’s economy, fares are cheap, and booking within the app prevents the standard haggling that takes place with taxi drivers in Cairo.

Your two rideshare  options in Cairo will be Uber and Careem

Uber is the standard app you’re used to and works the same way in Cairo.  Beware that if you are attempting to catch an Uber while standing in a busy area (like Tahrir Square) you’ll poay a significant upcharge.  Walk a few blocks away to save a few dollars.

Careem is the local version of Uber and functions primarily via cash payment, which makes downloading and hailing a car a quick and easy propositin.

Stickto Uber or Careem to avoid price haggling. Be sure to screenshot your ride quote beforehand to know how much you should pay, just in case your driver “accidentally” cancels your ride while you’re in the car.  Yes, that did happen to me.

Note that once yo get into downtown Cairo, traffic is so dense that walking is as quick as driving, and you also benefit from a different perspective, soaking in Cairo. I preferred walking once I arrived at the Khan Al-Khalili market as it was a better way to experience the city and just as fast as driving through traffic at times.

Warnings: Staying Safe (and Sane) in Cairo

Cairo is a fairly safe destination and your biggest risks are being ripped off or witnessing a car accident.  As such, still check the US State Department’s travel warnings before arriving, as the Middle East and North Africa can be very “interesting” places at times.

Traffic in Cairo is intense.  Plan on literally taking 2 hours to move from the pyramids to downtown if you leave during rush hour. Also, know that full chaos driving is completely normal in Cairo.  Just hang on and enjoy the experience. You’ll likely see two full on car accidents while you’re there (I did).

Hustlers are everywhere in Egypt!  Beware that anything you purchase will have an unofficial tourist tax and taxis will overcharge you.

For a taxi from downtown to the airport do not pay over 100 Egyptian Pounds and you are better off using Uber or Careem.  Also, screenshot your ride price to avoid any “negotiating” if they “accidentally cancel the ride”.

Currently, the Sinai peninsula is a more hazardous place to travel through, so review itineraries closely that will be passing through there.

All US travelers should register with the US State Department’s STEP Program before traveling.  Being registered in this system, with your itinerary and contact information, will allow them to notify you in case of emergency.

Additionally, check the US State Department’s Egypt Travel website for safety and security recommendations, paying attention to travel advisories for Egypt , and any regions to avoid.

Cairo Travel Guide

Discover the heart of egypt: a comprehensive cairo travel guide.

Dive into the essence of Egypt with our enriched Cairo Travel Guide. As the bustling capital city, Cairo stands as a beacon of history, culture, and modernity. It’s not just the largest city in Egypt but a pivotal one on the African continent, and a significant urban center in the Middle East and the Arab world. With the 15th-largest metropolitan area globally, Cairo is a tapestry woven with the threads of ancient civilizations, notably showcased by the majestic Giza pyramid complex and the historic ruins of Memphis nestled within its embrace.

Nestled by the fertile banks of the Nile Delta, the modern silhouette of Cairo was sketched in 969 CE by the visionary Fatimid dynasty. Yet, the land on which today’s city flourishes whispers tales of ancient capitals, their legacy etched in the stones of Old Cairo.

Cairo has forever pulsed as the heart of political and cultural vibrancy in the region, earning the moniker “the city of a thousand minarets” due to its rich tapestry of Islamic architecture. This city is a recognized World City, proudly bearing a “Beta +” classification from the Globalization and World Cities Research Network (GaWC).

Home to over 19 million souls across 3,085 square kilometers, Cairo’s expanse outstrips any other Egyptian city. Its urban sprawl is further augmented by an additional 9.5 million residents living in its vicinity. Yet, amidst its grandeur, Cairo faces the challenges of pollution and congestion, akin to other global megacities.

The Cairo metro system, one of only two in Africa (alongside Algiers, Algeria), is among the world’s busiest, serving over 4 million passengers annually. Economically, Cairo has led the Middle East since 2005 and ranked 43rd globally on Foreign Policy’s 2010 Global Cities Index.

Etymology and the Essence of Cairo

Locally referred to as Maṣr, mirroring the Egyptian Arabic term for Egypt, Cairo’s name underscores its integral role within the nation. Its official name, al-Qāhirah, translates to “the Vanquisher” or “the Conqueror,” a nod to the celestial alignment of Mars, known as “the Conquering Star,” during the city’s foundation. This name also celebrates the arrival of Fatimid Caliph Al-Mu’izz, who established Cairo as a capital upon his arrival from Mahdia. The ancient city of Heliopolis, now the suburb of Ain Shams (“Eye of the Sun”), marks another historical layer of this multifaceted city.

Cairo’s skyline, dotted with the “thousand minarets,” offers a panorama of attractions captivating visitors worldwide. Highlights include the awe-inspiring Pyramids of Giza , the treasure trove of the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities, the architectural marvel of the Step Pyramids at Saqqara, and the historic Citadel of Saladin. The city’s religious heritage is magnificently displayed at the Mosque of Mohamed Ali and the Mosque of Amr Ibn El Aas, the first mosque built in Africa.

The vibrant tapestry of Cairo’s history is further adorned with Coptic Cairo, home to iconic Coptic landmarks like the famous Hanging Church and the Coptic Museum. For a taste of Cairo’s bustling market life, Khan El Khalili stands as the most renowned tourist market globally.

Cairo is also the cradle of the oldest and most influential film and music industries in the Arab world, alongside hosting Al-Azhar University, the world’s second-oldest institution of higher learning. With many international media and organizations setting their regional headquarters here, and the Arab League calling Cairo home for much of its history, the city is a dynamic nexus of global and regional influence.

Explore Cairo, where history and modernity converge, offering a journey through time and an embrace of the new. This city is not just a destination but a vibrant chapter in the story of civilization.
