If you’ve never tried rafting before, the Merced River is an excellent place to test the waters, and there are many outfitters at many points along the river to choose from. There are two main locations for river rafting – in Yosemite Valley where the ride is smoother, and outside the park on the Merced River where the runs can be Level 2 to 4 depending on the water conditions and time of year. This is a seasonal activity in spring and early summer only.
The Merced River is an excellent choice for those who would like to combine their rafting adventure with a visit to the park. At peak snowmelt, the Merced runs high and fast, making the trip a class IV run. Later in the season when the river drops a bit, it becomes a class III run and then an I later in the year.

ARTA River Trips - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)
WELCOME TO THE "T"
California's best whitewater rafting trip.
About the Tuolumne River
Spilling from the highlands of Yosemite National Park, California’s Tuolumne River is celebrated as the premier whitewater rafting trip in the state. And with rugged canyon scenery, crystalline water and 18 miles of thundering Class III-IV rapids, this stretch of California whitewater lives up to its reputation as a favorite among river-runners.
For adventure seekers, the Tuolumne River offers nearly non-stop whitewater. Within the first three miles paddlers are challenged by aptly named rapids like Rock Garden, Nemesis and Ram’s Head. Further downstream awaits Clavey Falls, a series of staircase drops that offers rafters the ultimate thrill on the Tuolumne River, as well favorites like Grey’s Grindstone, Thread the Needle, and Hell’s Kitchen.
But it’s not just the Tuolumne’s exciting rapids that make it the best rafting trip in California. While it can be done as a day-trip, many people choose to extend the adventure to 2- or 3-days to explore the hidden wonders on the river canyon, like its spectacular side streams that lead to waterfalls, secret swimming holes, natural waterslides and excellent trout fishing. Plus, camping under the stars in Yosemite’s backyard, away from the crowds, can’t be beat.
Tuolumne River rafting trips are offered by four permitted outfitters May through August. And with only two launches authorized per day, exceptional solitude is an unexpected delight.
Your Tuolumne River Outfitter Options
In addition to its world-class whitewater, enchanting side streams, and unforgettable swimming holes, the Tuolumne offers unsurpassed wilderness solitude. Only four outfitters are permitted to run trips on the Tuolumne and only two trips are allowed to launch each day. A trip down the Tuolumne is a rare chance to get away from it all and get in touch with what really matters.

ARTA RIVER TRIPS (Groveland) - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go
Fishing River Trips
Boldly go where few have gone (fishing) before
California’s legendary Tuolumne River is well-known for its incredible whitewater, idyllic sidestreams, and legitimate remoteness. Less well-known is the excellent trout fishing that the river offers. Clear, cold water combined with minimal fishing pressure (especially deep in the Wild and Scenic Canyon where we will be) create some great conditions for catching colorful Rainbows and ferocious Browns.
The fishing is best after the spring runoff occurs (July, August, and September in normal snowpack years). Due to the daily, pulse hydro-electric releases, we often have low flows in the evenings and mornings which are great for fishing. Depending on your choice from the options below, you will either have a lot of fishing time once we arrive at camp in the evening and before we leave in the morning (hiking from camp) or, if you upgrade to having your own raft (either with or without a dedicated fishing guide), you’ll also have time to fish from the rafts between the challenging stretches of whitewater (we will break off from the main group after lunch or when feasible and fish from the rafts or from shore in promising stretches).
There are a lot of options for enjoying the fly-fishing opportunities on the Tuolumne:
- Do-it-yourself: Join us on one of our regular trips, bring your own gear, and enjoy some great evening and morning fishing time from camp (no fishing from the raft during the day). This is a great option if you want to fish but don’t need any help and don’t want to fish from a raft. 2 or 3 days: Regular trip prices, pick a date
- Do-it-with-us: Request your own raft on one of our regular trips and we’ll set you up with a raft guide and you can fish on your own in camp AND from the raft (between rapids). This is a great option if you already have all your own gear and are fairly comfortable taking care of yourself while fishing (our raft guides will move you around the river, but you’ll have to pick your own flies and tie your own knots). 2 days: +$100 per person (2 person minimum); 3 days: +$200 per person (2 person minimum); Pick a date and then give us a call.
- Do-it-with-a-fishing-guide: Work with us to find a date when we can add a legitimate fishing guide to join you in your raft. This is a great option if you are new to fly-fishing or if you want some expert advice (or if you want to increase your odds of catching one of The Big Ones ). A friend from ECHO Cooperative Adventures will join us and provide all the fly-fishing gear, flies, and expertise that you might need. 2 days: +$200 per person (2 person minimum); 3 days: +$300 per person (2 person minimum); Pick a date and then give us a call.

AWESOME 6-day raft trip down the Selway River in N.E. Idaho near Missoula, MT. The river, campsites, participants, scenery, etc., were great. We had fun and the trip was smooth and went off without a hitch. What made the trip superb were the guides: Izzy, Emma, Kenny, and Woody. The were personable, informatice, accomplished, .... They took care of EVERYTHING! On top of the everyday everything, they made a birthday cake for someone on the trip including the candles.
Amazing tour! I went as a chaperone for a field trip and the guides were so knowledgeable and helpful throughout the whole trip. We were safe the entire trip and had loads of fun. I would definitely recommend going with ARTA if you get the chance!
Best one day rafting trip of my life. Non stop rapids on the Tuolumne. Tate was an incredible guide. Just amazing. I felt safe in her hands and happy in her presence. What a special person. Cole was an awesome guy to have running the show too. And every other guide seemed to be just as friendly. I definitely would recommend ARTA. And I never write reviews.
One day trip on the South Fork of the American River for our daughter's birthday. Seven girls, three adults and two boats. Sawyer and Sean were terrific. Safety first with fun a close second (and there was a lot of fun). These guys have a lot of experience and made the trip amazing. We'll be back next summer!
From the very beginning the customer service was phenomenal. We had so many questions about the rafting tour and the employee answered all of them without any hesitation and provided so much insightful info to help us decide if our entire party of 9 would all be willing to commit since the age ranged from 60 to 12 years old. The Merced was fast flowing and rated a level 4 which gave some of our party a little worry. But as we arrived, we were geared with wetsuits, sweaters, helmets, basically everything you needed to feel safe and comfortable. Our tour guide Chad was very nice, informative, and an experienced rafter. He made the entire trip enjoyable and safe. If you're looking to book a rafting trip I'd recommend this company which I believe also operates under zephyr. For $50 dollars more you can get usb drive of your entire 5 mile rafting tour.
We did the 1 Day Tuolumne River Trip this past summer with ARTA. We had an amazing time. Olivia was our fantastic tour guide. We laughed A LOT with her. We loved her sense of humor. It matched with ours perfectly. She was also very knowledgeable and shared a lot of information about the river and surrounding area with us. The Tuolumne was a lot of fun! There weren't many breaks from the rapids, which we loved! And Olivia was always very encouraging, even when I just couldn't get that back paddle right or when I missed the water completely. Haha! And she genuinely was just happy to see us having so much fun. She clearly loves what she does. There was one point where they let us get out of the raft to swim through the rapids. Such a fun/funny experience! Also, if you're brave, unlike me, they let you jump off a cliff into the water at one point as well. I was happy to watch that one! But, the other two in my party went for that leap of faith and loved it. I highly recommend ARTA. And I hope you have as much fun and laugh as much as we did if you go with ARTA! Olivia, thanks so much for an amazing day! We will never forget it. And always remember to "ROCK IT!" Hahaha!!!!
I took my 14 year old son and three friends for a two day wilderness rafting trip on South Fork of American River. It was absolutely incredible! I can't thank ARTA enough for putting together such a memorable experience for us. I did hours and hours of research and finally discovered them on YouTube. The rafting, The riverside campsite, the food, lunches (with cookie eating contest), rock jumping, and fishing for the boys. Our guides were AMAZING! Fletcher, Will, Alia and Jordan and Wyatt as our gear guides. Tom was also amazing, and, as a middle school math teacher knew exactly how to handle middle school boys. They were so competent, interesting, friendly etc. Not to mention, they wouldn't let us do a single thing! Including me walking way down the beach to to tell them it was dinner time. Guides insisted that I kick back and they would go get the boys. There were special touches throughout the trip...including a cake baked in a Dutch Oven for my son's birthday. It was an incredibly bonding experience...both with boys, fellow rafters, and guides. Very much a sense of community The only reason I haven't posted pics of the rapids is because I didn't want to get my phone wet. Although there were plenty of photographers taking pics at biggest rapids. Totally awesome!!

Great time. We want to do it again next year but don't forget the alcohol. We didnt bring any and got stuck with a group of Mormons(great people) but would have killed for a beer the first night ;) Quality rapids both days. No slow times. Guides were great. Food was great. Everyone had fun. totally safe. We had a pregnant girl on the trip and she did great. Definitely do the Gold mine excursion.Very cool. 100 yes in to the mountain. Candles and a guitar. Definitely great memories. Cant wait to go back next year...We went in August but will try June when rapids are even larger and colder ! Great event with a large group.
I just finished a 3-day trip down the Tuolumne and it was next level. Absolutely amazing experience all around, highlighted by an awesome staff. Was a perfect trip
One of my favorite days ever! Our guide, Hayden was the best. Extremely knowledgeable and had our immediate trust! The river is amazing, and this trip has a great combination of class 2 and 3 rapids for non- stop fun. We will be back!!

The Tuolumne River is born high in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Yosemite National Park.
