The Maldives

Think the Maldives is just for loved-up honeymooners? Think again. The tropical Asian archipelago is now positioning itself as a family-friendly destination, too. Bali, Indonesia

What's special: Bali has an exciting mix of nature and culture. It's a lone Hindu-majority island in Muslim-majority Indonesia, and its culture has developed in unique and interesting ways. It has two seasons, wet (October – April) and dry (May – September).

Why it makes sense for families: Families with kids of all ages will find something to suit them in Bali. With younger kids, chill out at a beach. The south coast, with its white sand and greater development, is most popular, but the west coast offers a simpler and less crowded alternative, with black sands and colorful underwater life. Older kids will also enjoy the culture of Ubud, with its ornate Hindu temples, Monkey Forest and cultural performances.

Don't miss: A cycle tour through the bright green terraced rice fields and villages of Ubud; snorkeling off the uncrowded west coast; visiting the Monkey Forest in Ubud.

Where to stay: Many high-end hotels with rewards programs have a presence in Bali, especially on its southern Bukit Peninsula and around the Kuta area. How to get there: Koh Samui is home to Samui Airport, which mainly offers domestic flights from Bangkok. Bangkok Airways operates most flights to and from the island, but SilkAir is among a handful of international airlines that fly there.

What's special: Thailand has an experience ( and an island ) for every type of traveler, but families would do well to head to Koh Samui . It's Thailand's second largest island, so there's plenty of variety here, with both pristine beaches for relaxing and water sports, and dense forest for hiking and other jungle activities. Avoid Koh Samui from November to January, as this is the wet season.

Why it makes sense for families: Koh Samui is more upmarket than some other popular Thai destinations, meaning the vibe is a bit more suitable for kids than places with a wilder party scene. While Koh Samui is certainly not an off-the-beaten-path or undiscovered destination, the well-developed facilities mean that parents don't need to worry about keeping their kids safe or entertained.

Don't miss: Snorkeling and kayaking at the Ang Thong Marine National Park; zip-lining through the forest at Samui Canopy Adventures; a day in the calm clear waters of Thong Takhian Beach (otherwise known as Silver Beach).

Kyoto, Japan

How to get there: The nearest international airport to Kyoto is the Kansai Airport, one of the busiest airports in Japan. Airlines that fly there include Delta Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Air Canada, British Airways and United Airlines.

What's special: Kyoto , in the western part of Japan's main Honshu island, offers some of Japan's finest cultural attractions. Because it was spared damage in World War II, there are more ancient temples here than in other Japanese cities. While it is still a big, modern, developed city in many ways, there are also endless peaceful parks, forests, gardens and other delightful and relaxing spots. It's a year-round destination, as each season offers something different, but it can be unpleasantly hot and humid in the summer (June – August) and bitterly cold in the winter (November – February).

Great list, Anthony 🙂 May I add one suggestion though? Taiwan is a fantastic island. Quite often though, Taipei gets the most attention. Granted, it is an awesome city to visit with plenty of sightseeing. However, I would highly recommend going farther south. It is not a problem with the high-speed train (which is comparable to the famous Japanese Shinkansen) – in just a couple of hours, one can get to Tainan, the old capital of Taiwan. It is a fascinating city full of historic landmarks and amazing food. Even further south, there is another city that is perfect for a family trip – Kaohsiung. Cijin Island and Pier-2 Art Center there are meant for excellent family getaways. Both kids and adults would enjoy plenty of creative activities there. Cheers!

1. Phuket, Thailand

Thailand is by far Southeast Asia’s most child-friendly destination in Southeast Asia and the most popular beach destination, with some of Asia’s most stunning beaches. The best are found in the south, with masses of beaches and islands to choose from, but the most popular destination is Phuket, Thailand’s largest and busiest island.

Phuket Island is also extremely family-friendly, whatever the weather and there’s plenty to do, natural and man-made to keep everyone entertained while relaxing on holiday. Phuket Island boasts more than 30-plus glorious beaches, but not all are suitable for children and family holidays; those that are, include Bangtao, Kamala, Karon, Kata, and Patong.

Many have large beachfront resorts offering diverse water sports and children’s activities and kids’ clubs, while some major resorts, such as JW Marriott Phuket, boast their own private beaches. From Phuket, there are abundant day cruises available to outer islands such as the Phi Phi archipelago, for yet more swims and snorkeling. Or cycle into the scenic rainforest interiors with Phuket Countryside Bike Tours, or picnic at one of Phuket’s waterfalls.

2. Hoi An, Vietnam

Everyone loves visiting Hoi An , especially families! This 16th century Silk Road trading port today ranks as one of Southeast Asia’s oldest, most alluring towns and one of Vietnam’s favorite destinations for umpteen reasons. Hoi An’s beautifully preserved Ancient Town and World Heritage Site is a compact pedestrianized area covering a few narrow streets alongside picturesque Thu Bon River, crammed with centuries-old Chinese pagodas and shophouses, cultural treasures, and quaint French colonial-era buildings housing cafés and craft shops that are all easily walkable.

The waterfront fish market here is especially interesting for children, as are the slew of Vietnamese cooking classes and artisan workshops where you can learn how to make traditional crafts, including lanterns. There are also great value, riverfront restaurants, where you can watch the chug past from shaded balconies.

Don’t miss the monthly, full moon lantern festival: kids will marvel at the hundreds of multi-colored lanterns illuminating the Ancient Town, the traditional games, and impromptu performances out on the streets. Beyond, cycle out to scenic rice fields and farming lands (you may get to ride a water buffalo) and the pretty town beach. Or hire a small fishing boat along the river at sunset; captains invariably let children helm the boat for a while!

3. Siem Reap, Cambodia

In northwest Cambodia, Siem Reap town is the gateway to World Heritage Site, Angkor Archaeological Park, containing an ancient Khmer civilization’s stupendous remains; not only 12th century Angkor Wat temple complex, one of the world’s great ancient wonders, but also hundreds of other majestic temples and monuments. Little ones should enjoy the Indiana Jones-inspired adventure and living history lesson, exploring all the crumbling ruins and moats, especially on memorable family bicycle tours through the Park’s jungle trails, stopping off at leisure at favorite spots.

Siem Reap itself is a lively stand-out destination, increasingly popular with families for the wide choice of interesting activities and things to do . Learn how to make Cambodian pottery at Khmer Ceramic Fine Arts Centre, visit the Banteay Srey Butterfly Centre or head to the circus, namely, Phare, The Cambodian Circus, a Khmer-style Cirque du Soleil, where performers use theatre, music, dance, and daring modern circus acts to convey historical and modern Cambodian stories in a new way. 4. Kratie, Cambodia

A day’s drive from Siem Reap, in Cambodia’s central interiors, the mellow riverside town of Kratie is a popular base for sightings of the rare Irrawaddy dolphins, which inhabit this area of the Mekong River, albeit in ever-dwindling numbers. All children love to see dolphins in the wild and they get an amazing opportunity while on a guided boat tour around Kampi, several miles north of Kratie. Taken to the Mekong’s best vantage points, the family should spot these elusive freshwater dolphins, along with rare birds and local fishermen casting their nets.

Besides dolphins, the tranquil and unspoiled countryside of emerald rice paddies and traditional Khmer stilt houses surrounding Kratie is ideal for family bike rides and picnics. Or take the ferry boat to Koh Trong, an island set amidst the Mekong River opposite Kratie; without cars or typical modern facilities, villagers live a simple rural life in palm-shaded villages. Even charming Kratie is lovely to explore, a former French colonial port with an expansive riverfront and broad promenade that is perfect for evening strolls.

5. Kuta-Legian, Bali, Indonesia

Two traditional coastal villages merged together along with Bali’s southwest coast urban sprawl, Kuta and Legian are one of Bali’s most popular destinations, especially fun for kids. Bali is a world-renowned surfers mecca, but one of the best places to learn is on the beaches of Kuta and Legian, for their well-defined surf waves and sandy-bottomed shallow waters.

Amongst the dozens of surf schools, reputable Rip Curl School of Surf offers a ‘Little Ripper’ surfing course specifically designed for kids under 13 years. From around April to October, along Kuta beachfront, don’t miss releasing baby turtles at sunset at the Kuta Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Centre, an NGO established to protect sea turtles and their natural habitats. Amongst Kuta’s countless amusements, the top family choice is Waterbom, twice voted Asia’s Leading Water Park at the World Travel Awards. Make a splash all day here at the 16-plus world-class water slides, including Asia’s steepest, ‘The Climax’ and its 360-degree loop and numerous water-based activities set in sprawling tropical gardens.

6. Sanur, Bali, Indonesia

Over on Bali’s east coast, the charming seaside suburb of Sanur, sets a more relaxed and tranquil tone than its frenetic counterparts, Kuta-Legian. That and its fabulous beach – one of Bali’s longest and prettiest – are some reasons why Sanur has been a popular family destination for decades.

The extensive stretch of golden sands is lined the entire way with a shaded wooden promenade, along with beachfront low-key resorts and restaurants – perfect for an early morning or late afternoon stroll with the family. Sanur’s beach also boasts sandy-bottomed, shallow calm waters, ideal for safe swimming, snorkeling to the outlying coral reefs, and the multitude of family water sports available. Activities extend to kite flying (Sanur hosts a major kite festival between July and August) and Bali Seawalker, exploring the bottom of the Indian Ocean and immersed in tropical fish using a specially designed, underwater helmet.

Sanur also makes a great base for day cruises to a trio of lesser-known, neighboring islands, Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Penida and Nusa Ceningan, boasting some of Bali’s most dazzling white sand beaches and clear azure waters brimming with fantastic marine life, including dolphins. 7. Luang Prabang, Laos

The enchanting riverside town and former royal capital, Luang Prabang, is one of Southeast Asia’s most alluring and popular destinations, highly appealing to both children and families, keeping everyone happy and entertained for days. When traveling to Laos with family , you’ll make some great memories in Luang Prabang!

The whole family can enjoy some of the ancient town’s main attractions: climbing up Mount Phousi – easy for kids – for sunrise or sunset fantastic views across towny, or the lively night markets on a pedestrianized street, with piles of colorful textiles and handicrafts hand-made by local ethnic communities. 8. Vang Vieng, Laos

Vang Vieng lies mid-way between Vientiane and Luang Prabang on the banks of Nam Song River, but its surrounding rural scenery of ethereal limestone mountains and caves, rice paddies, and lagoons has made this unassuming town the top adventure destination in Laos. Here, tour agencies offer diverse adventures and extreme sports suitable for families, especially with active kids and teenagers.

Families can spend a few exciting days here, burning off all that excess energy, with no temple visits needed! For a fun breakfast, head to Organic Farm, sampling their famed Mulberry Pancakes by the riverside, then afterward, taking a farm tour to meet various farm animals.

9. Inle Lake, Myanmar

Deep in Myanmar’s central highlands, beautiful Inle Lake is the nation’s second-largest freshwater lake and elevated at 2,900 feet, one of its highest. The main activity here, naturally, is boating: kids will love exploring this magical water world on a long-tail wooden boat and stopping off to visit some of the 200-plus ethnic villages built on stilts over the lake and their floating gardens. Some consider Inle Lake an absolute must when visiting Myanmar.

Gliding past the local Inthar fishermen, uniquely rowing their boats with one leg wrapped around an oar, is equally fascinating. Part of a Biosphere Reserve and Wetland Wildlife Sanctuary, the lake is home to heaps of exotic water birds, besides exceptional flora and fauna, which can also be explored on kayaks. Around the lake, there are opportunities for interactive ‘cooking classes’ within local homes and visits to artisan workshops, and seeing how traditional Burmese crafts are hand-made.

The Inthar Heritage Burmese Cat House is a big hit with kids: a cat sanctuary aiming to reintroduce the near-extinct Burmese cats back into Myanmar, where you can freely interact with these feline creatures. The captivating Cat House is just one component of Inle Heritage a not-for-profit organization striving to preserve Inle Lake’s nature and culture, funded by their quaint accommodations, restaurant with shaded verandas, craft shop, and ethnic Inthar cooking classes – l housed in a traditional Burmese timbered dwelling. Beyond, village homestays and cycling and hiking in the surrounding countryside are further engaging activities.

The 7 Best Family Holiday Destinations in Asia!

So you want to take a family holiday in Asia? Great choice! Asia is awesome for families. There is so much to discover and experience, and mostly at a very good price! We love travelling and living in Asia from the beautiful food in Penang to the beautiful villas in bali to the adventure in the Phillipines.

However, if you are anything like us, choosing a specific destination in Asia is hard! There are so many great family holiday destinations. We love it here in Malaysia , but we have also loved it with kids in Bali , Singapore , Thailand , Taiwan and the Phillippines – and I am sure this list will grow as we travel to more Asian destinations as a family.

To help make the choice easier, I asked some of my family travel blogging buddies to help you decide! Here are their choices for where you should book your next Asian family vacation…

What’s better than introducing your little global citizen to a foreign country? Showing them one that’s a mix of different cultures all living and working together harmoniously. Malaysia is a centuries-old combination of Malay, Chinese, Indian, and British traditions. The kids can simultaneously watch incense waft up from the front of a Chinese temple, hear the call to prayer from the mosque down the street, and smell the inviting aroma of Indian food from the cart on the corner. It’s like visiting multiple countries all at one time.

Malaysia appeals to the adventurous explorer in kids. Trek the jungle in search of the distinctive Rafflesia flower which can grow up to 100 cm wide and is famous for smelling like rotten meat. In Malaysian Borneo, come face-to-face with semi-wild orangutans in rehabilitation sanctuaries or cruise rivers in search of endangered proboscis monkeys and river dolphins. Visit cultural villages to learn about now-forbidden tribal ways like headhunting, and let the kids try out how well they do with a blow dart. In Kuala Lumpur, climb 272 steps to the Hindu temple built high up inside Batu Caves.

Children who enjoy modern sights will want to head up to the Skybridge of the Petronas Towers, the tallest twin towers in the world. If that isn’t enough, spend a day or two at LEGOLAND Malaysia, just across the border from Singapore. The water park, themed hotel, and amusement park rides will undoubtedly keep them entertained. Make sure to leave time to wander through Miniland Asia with models of everything from China’s Forbidden City to Cambodia’s Angkor Wat, all built out of LEGOs. With a visit to Malaysia, your kids will feel like they’ve travelled to more than just one country.

Hong Kong Disneyland

I think Hong Kong is the best Asian city to take kids. My reason for this is that transport is fantastic and it is very easy to get around. The MTR (train system) is user friendly and you can get everywhere you want to go. Octopus Cards for this service can be purchased at the airport and any money will be refunded when you leave.

English is widely spoken and understood in Hong Kong. You will always find someone that understands and is able to help. The locals love western children and go out of their way to make the kids feel welcome. Feeding the fussiest kids is also easy in Hong Kong. There are plenty of places to eat including all the western take away outlets we are used to and my kids ate traditional Chinese dumplings at least once a day. There is no issues with food – you are able to eat anywhere unlike a lot of other Asian countries.

Hong Kong has Disneyland and Ocean Park among many other attractions that will keep the kids entertained. Disneyland is focused on the under 10’s while Ocean Park is more suitable for teenagers but young kids will also love the animals and many of the rides. Both Disneyland and Ocean Park are very affordable in Hong Kong, easy to get to on public transport and the kids loved every minute of it. Shopping is also fantastic, from markets to prestige labels, it’s all there. Make sure you barter hard in the markets though – it’s a competitive sport!

I can’t recommend Hong Kong highly enough to people with young kids. If you want a stress free, easy holiday in Asia this is the place for you.

Cycling in Xian

One of our favourite Asian destinations is China. After falling in love with the country 8 years ago on a business trip, it was a must to do with the children. We returned for 2 weeks in 2013. China provides something for every one, with its rich heritage, diverse culture, exotic food and great shopping. It truly is an amazing destination to visit with kids.

We visited 3 destinations, but Xi’an was definitely a highlight. This ancient city is amazing and our children loved cycling on the ancient City Wall. The wall completely encircles the old city, so the scenery from the top is incredible. Your kids will love cycling on this 14 kilometre long wall which provides great views of the city below. Bikes and tandem bikes are available for you to rent, and on each corner you can take a rest and enjoy an icy-pole or replenish with a nice cold bottle of water, as it was super hot when we visited in July. If your children are not old enough to ride the bicycles, there are also electric cars to hire. Trust me. Your Children will absolutely LOVE this activity!

We love Japan and have visited a couple of times with kids. We feel there are many reasons it is the best Asian country to visit with kids.

Japan is a year-round destination with a beautiful, varied landscape. It is clean, safe and has one of the most efficient public transportation systems that will take visitors throughout the country via the shinkasen or bullet trains. Japan is a blend of modern and old world. Tokyo offers the most innovative technologies and skyscrapers while Kyoto is old Japan at its finest with over 2,000 temples and shrines. It’s a country rich in history and culture and also has some of the most polite and helpful people we’ve ever met.

Japan has countless family-friendly attractions and activities from parks, gardens, museums, castles and even temples for some cultural immersions. Some attractions are quite unique like watching sumo wrestling tournaments, seeing Mt. Fuji, visiting a Hello Kitty park or jumping on the cat bus at the Studio Ghibli Museum. It also has many amusement parks including Tokyo Disneyland, Tokyo DisneySea, Universal Studios and Space World that can entertain families for days. DisneySea is one of the best parks we have ever visited.

Travel Tips: We found traveling in Japan quite easy. Eat at the department stores’ basement halls for a variety of fresh and cheaper food. There’s bound to be something there even for picky eaters. Items are discounted near closing time. If you’re going to be traveling all over Japan, get the Japan Rail Pass for major cost-savings that allows unlimited travel on trains and buses on the Japan Railways networks. Kids under 5 years old are free.

Enjoying Laos with kids aged 4, 8 and 12

Laos was a great country to travel in with children.  We loved it for the culture and the people, who were friendly and generous. However, mostly we loved it for the incredible nature and opportunities to always be outside.

We spent our days riding the scooter around rice patties, exploring small villages, caves, and stunning blue lagoons.  We then spent our evenings out at one of the relaxed restaurants/bars where the food was yummy, inexpensive, and actually quite varied.

Travel Tip: One thing you should be sure to do is hit Vang Vieng!  Many people think it is just a party town and when you first arrive you may sense that is all it is as well, but give it a couple days and get out exploring!  Even the tubing is great fun for kids of all ages.

Bali (Indonesia)

What an impossible question! It, of course, depends on the age of kids. With babies & prams I would choose Kuala Lumpar in Malaysia. There are good, stable paths so getting around is much easier. But we have been taking our kids to Bali, Indonesia since they were in my tummy.

Bali has so many wonderful qualities. From the perfect weather in every season, to the friendly Balinese who absolutely adore children. The price is cheap so you can have a luxurious vacation for a reasonable price and there are so many activities to do from water parks to monkey forests to shows.

Travel Tip: The Balinese are super friendly so don’t be worried when they take your kids for a walk while you are at a restaurant. They are not kidnapping them. They are simply entertaining them so you can eat in peace. It’s a novel idea, but certainly a very welcome one.

The Lost World zone in Universal Studios

My (Sharon again!) top family holiday destination in Asia has to be Singapore. It is just perfect for families with kids of all ages. It has everything I look for in a destination – interesting culture, easy to get around, great food, many and varied attractions.

The mix of Malay, Indian and Chinese cultures is apparent and adds to the appeal of Singapore – as well as the taste! There is also a strong British influence and many expats to give it a very multicultural vibe. The common language is English and you will see this everywhere which makes things extra easy.

The subway system is unreal. Efficient and thorough and will take you to most destinations. As for attractions there are many! We particularly loved Universal Studios Singapore , and there are also water parks, the world’s largest aquarium, a fabulous zoo and many cultural attractions as well. You could spend weeks here and not run out of new things to do. The only downside is the cost, Singapore is not cheap.

Travel Tips : Bring plenty of money, do not expect it to be comparable in cost to the neighbouring countries. Try lots of food and get to some hawker centres.

Sagarmatha National Park

If your dream vacation involves posting up on a postcard-worthy beach, the Maldives is for you. This far-flung destination, which is located about 370 miles from civilization in the Indian Ocean, is made up of more than 1,100 idyllic islands (roughly 200 of which are inhabited). The Maldives feature lush tropical landscapes, unparalleled white sand beaches, crystal-clear ocean waters and coral reefs that prompt extensive exploration. The best way to experience this slice of paradise? Stay in one of many overwater bungalows , of course.

Tokyo is as fast-paced as cities come – it's the most populated city in the world, after all. Japan's capital features neon-lit skyscrapers and crowded streets that novice visitors may find dizzying, but its one-of-a-kind offerings can't be missed. Spend days touring quirky museums, exploring fascinating architecture or visiting Odaiba for its premier shopping scene. Or, take in some quieter, more peaceful moments at a holy site like the Meiji Shrine or Sensoji Temple. Tokyo's unrivaled gastronomic landscape (think: sushi, ramen, sky-high cocktail bars and more Michelin darlings than you could hope to visit) also makes it a bucket list destination for foodies.

Phuket, Thailand's elongated beaches and cerulean waters embody a paradise that few other Asian destinations can rival. Besides swimming and relaxing on the beach, visitors can take traditional, wooden longtail boat tours to James Bond Island in Phang Nga Bay to see the surreal limestone rock formations that rise from the sea. The towering Big Buddha statue is also a top attraction, while Phuket's buzzing beach clubs and nightlife options hold appeal for those looking to let loose. What's more, like most destinations in Thailand, travelers can find relatively affordable lodging options here.

This Nepalese national park is famous for housing the behemoth that is Mount Everest, the highest point on earth, and promises a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. However, it is important to know that Sagarmatha is not just Everest. The UNESCO-listed park also offers several other sky-high Himalayan peaks, as well as sweeping valleys, scenic glaciers, deep gorges and incredible wildlife, including snow leopards and red pandas. Just note, seeing the park's top attractions typically requires at least two weeks of trekking, and due to Sagarmatha's high elevation and rocky, steep terrain, a trip here isn't for the faint of heart.

A British colony until 1997, Hong Kong's strong Western influence sets it apart from China's mainland metropolises. Beyond Hong Kong's sleek, towering skyscrapers (best admired from Victoria Peak), visitors can find natural and cultural gems on the more than 250 outlying islands, such as Lantau Island, or shop the city's bustling street markets. Dim sum is a must, but Hong Kong's robust dining scene also offers everything from street food to Michelin-starred fine dining. And when the sun goes down, watch the Symphony of Lights laser show dazzle the skyline along Victoria Harbor.

Tucked among lush mountains in northwest Thailand, Chiang Mai offers a sized-down version of Bangkok's buzz paired with a tranquil culture and natural beauty. Your urban itinerary should include tuk-tuk rides, tours of breathtaking temples like Wat Chedi Luang Varavihara and Wat Phra Singh, trips to night markets and a cooking class to try your hand at pad Thai. Then, step outside of the city walls to visit an ethical elephant sanctuary or two and a wander through beautiful Doi Suthep-Pui National Park.

History lovers and Instagrammers alike will revel in the sites of Kyoto. The city, which used to be Japan's capital until imperial times, is awash with centuries-old shrines and temples, including the gilded Kinkakuji and Fushimi Inari Taisha, a shrine that dates back to A.D. 711. In addition to saving time for religious sites, be sure to visit the famous Philosopher's Path, preferably during cherry blossom season, and the mystical Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. When hunger strikes, treat yourself to kaiseki: a traditional multicourse meal native to Japan. For another essential Japanese experience, stay at one of the many ryokans (traditional Japanese inns) in Kyoto. 

From the moment you touchdown at Singapore Changi Airport (a tourist destination in itself), Singapore shows off its futuristic embellishment. But this Southeast Asia jewel is also unique for its amalgamation of cultures. This fusion takes form in the city's colorful neighborhoods, eclectic culinary scene and overall modern atmosphere. After shopping on flashy Orchard Road and chowing down in cultural enclaves like Little India or Chinatown, head downtown to take in the towering skyscrapers from Merlion Park, the Singapore Flyer or the sky-high Gardens by the Bay.

The island nation of Sri Lanka, located off the southern tip of India, boasts rainforests, beaches and ruins without the tourist crowds of other popular Asian destinations. Despite its small footprint, Sri Lanka features 26 national parks, many of which are ideal for a safari excursion to encounter elephants, leopards and sloth bears. Meanwhile, ancient sites like Sigiriya, a 600-foot-high fortress, and the temples of Polonnaruwa hold their own appeal, and the palm-fringed golden beaches that line the shores are never too far away for those seeking a more laid-back vacation.

Hanoi is perfect for first-time Vietnam visitors, with tranquil lakes offsetting its fast-paced bustle and darting motorbikes. The country's capital offers plenty in the way of history, culture, shopping, dining and natural splendor. Start your day off with a Vietnamese coffee, then head to Hanoi's central Old Quarter for a stroll through the many narrow, colorful streets and a taste of mouthwatering street food. After that, check out one of the city's many temples, including the ancient Temple of Literature, which dates back to the 11th century, or head to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, a must-visit for history buffs.

Bali's natural beauty is so profound, travelers have been known to refer to the Indonesian destination as "heaven on Earth." Here, lush rainforests, picturesque mountains, sweeping valleys and scenic beaches all sit side by side. You'll also find a handful of serene temples in this Southeast Asia hot spot, including Uluwatu and Tanah Lot temples – both excellent places to catch a sunset. And no first-time trip to Bali would be complete without on a visit to Ubud, Bali's cultural capital and home of the region's famous rice terraces.

Whether you visit in spring (for cherry blossoms), summer (for climbing), autumn (for foliage) or winter (for nearby ski resorts), Japan's highest peak and imposing attraction is sure to capture your attention. Mount Fuji lies about 60 miles southwest of Tokyo, perfect for a daytrip from the city or a glimpse from a train ride, but this active volcano is also worthy of deeper exploration. Base yourself in the Fuji Five Lakes area to enjoy picture-perfect views at Arakurayama Sengen Park or from one of Lake Kawaguchiko's onsens (hot springs), and don't leave without sampling local hoto noodles.  

If you only have time to go to one beach in Thailand, make it Railay Beach, one of the world's most beautiful beaches . Located in the country's Krabi province, Railay Beach features glistening white sands and is surrounded by limestone rock formations (covered in leafy green vegetation) that jut out from the sea. If you're feeling adventurous, explore the area's natural wonders with a rock climbing excursion or go for a nighttime kayak trip to see bioluminescent plankton. As if this beach destination couldn't get more alluring, you're only able to reach it by boat. Daytrips from nearby Ao Nang are popular among travelers.

Siem Reap is the home of Angkor Wat, an ornate Buddhist temple built in the 12th century that is believed to be the largest religious monument in the world. The impressive landmark is just one of many must-sees within Cambodia's UNESCO World Heritage Site of Angkor. The complex also includes the equally detailed Angkor Thom and Ta Prohm Temple. Because of the immense popularity of Angkor (the site receives millions of visitors per year), you may want to travel during a shoulder month like March or November to avoid bumping elbows with fellow travelers.

Travel to the capital of Indian state Rajasthan to marvel at the "Pink City's" incredible architecture. Hawa Mahal, a pink sandstone palace that was modeled after Hindu god Krishna's crown, is Jaipur's biggest claim to fame. The property's astounding 953 honeycomb-patterned windows allowed the original ladies of the royal family to view the comings and goings of the Indian city without being seen. Other structures worth seeing are the Jaigarh Fort, Panna Meena ka Kund and Jantar Mantar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that displays larger-than-life astronomical instruments.

Thailand's capital city is filled to the brim with eye-catching Hindu sites, nonstop nightlife and incredible Thai cuisine. Sacred sites like Wat Arun and Wat Pho are pockets of calm amidst Bangkok's skyscrapers. Shoppers can enjoy the Chatuchak Weekend Market, one of the world's largest street markets, or venture to one of the floating markets located outside the city. While in Bangkok, grab as much grub as possible from the street stalls, and at night, you won't want to miss the lofty views from one of the many rooftop bars.

This national park is so loved and respected, its image is featured on China's paper currency. Guilin and Lijiang River National Park is located in the Guangxi region in the southeastern part of China. The Lijiang River runs about 50 miles from Guilin to Yangshuo, passing stunning landscapes and towering green karsts (eroded limestone) along the way. The best way to take in the otherworldly scenery is by boat cruise, though you may want to splurge on a luxury option since the trip can take up to five hours. Tourists who prefer to travel on their own time can also hike or bike along the river.

Traveling with children should not be daunting. A lot of people believe that children slow you down but that isn’t the case. Travelling with children can be fun. With that in mind we thought about all the times we have seen families enjoying their vacations in South East Asia. Contrary to expectations, South East Asia with kids is a great idea.

With that in mind we decided to do a post on the best places to visit in South East Asia with kids. Each blogger puts forward their own experience and perspective about what makes the destination their particular favorite. They also include why they feel it is conducive to travel with children and the best parts about visiting it.

I love South East Asia!! South East Asia with kids is a whole new experience though!

The food is delicious, there’s everything from beaches to jungle, the culture is beautiful, and the history is just incredible. But, it can be chaotic, noisy, dirty and the traffic is enough to make anyone’s head spin. Finding a calm oasis that still delivers all the amazing parts of SE Asia without the crazy is hard. However, Koh Lipe is one of these incredible places.

Koh Lipe is a tiny island in the very South-West corner of Thailand. Yes, it’s a bit of a hassle to get to, but in my opinion, it’s totally worth it! The island is incredibly laid back and a dream for traveling with kids. There are only a handful of trucks on the islands and a few moto-taxis.

Other than that, it’s strictly pedestrian. It’s so small that it’s possible to walk from one side to the other in a short period of time. And, there’s no worry that your little one will run into traffic, because there isn’t any traffic!

Sunrise beach is the place to stay on Koh Lipe with kids. The sand is unimaginably soft, and the sea is as clear as glass. It’s possible to snorkel, kayak or just relax on the beach and play in the warm waters. The entire island feels a bit like a resort, without being a resort. It’s acceptable to go anywhere in a bathing suit, and shoes are always optional!

My favorite part is ordering dinner from a beach-front restaurant, and letting the kids play in the sand until food arrives. There are great restaurants along the beach, and on Walking Street, so you’re never too far from some deliciously fresh Thai food. And, if you veer off walking street and head towards Sunset beach, there’s even a temple if you’re looking for a bit of culture.

One of the best things to do is take a traditional Thai long-boat for a day trip to the neighboring islands. This completes the perfect island getaway.

There’s hiking, fantastic snorkeling, and bioluminescent plankton tours. Being able to alternate between relaxation and family friendly activities makes Koh Lipe one of the best places to visit in South East Asia with kids!

2. Bangkok, Thailand

Jenny’s pick of best places to visit in South East Asia with kids is Bangkok, Thailand.

Bangkok has to be one of our favorite places to visit in South East Asia with kids. Being one of the main gateway cities, it was a place that my husband and I visited frequently pre-kids and were pleasantly surprised at how accessible the city is for young families when we returned with our boys (who were 1 and 3 years old for their first visit). 

We love the energy, the ordered chaos, the ornate temples, the colorful markets, the polite people and the food… oh my THE FOOD!

Many of the restaurants along the bustling tourist strip of Th Khao San (Khao San Road) even have high-chairs and we have always received a warm welcome from restaurant staff who consider the boys quite a novelty.

However, the streets can get rather hectic, so we recommend carrying little ones in a sling or carrier, rather than attempting to negotiate a buggy. For older children who get a little tired of walking in the heat, they will love careering around in a tuk-tuk – hold on tight!

The city can be a sensory overload for little ones and can get very hot, so we always ensure some downtime back at the hotel in the afternoons. When walking around Bangkok with kids, we stop frequently for snacks and drinks (our boys love the mango and rice), and ensure we have at least one trip over to the playground at Lumpini Park.

I recommend visiting Wat Arun over the Grand Palace for a more peaceful and intimate temple experience and a ride on a ferry along the Chao Praya river is always a great way to cool down from the heat of the day.

If you are visiting Thailand, make sure you plan at least a couple of days in Bangkok before heading to the islands. It’s a wonderful contrast to the laid-back beach life and you won’t regret it. It is definitely one great place to visit in South East Asia with kids.

3. Singapore

Amy’s pick of best places to visit in South East Asia with kids is Singapore.

Growing up in Kuala Lumpur, we went to Singapore almost every year for our family vacation. Back then Singapore wasn’t quite the powerhouse it is now, and we enjoyed weekends filled with shopping and food with the occasional visit to Sentosa .

As the years have gone by, Singapore has upped the ante and my, what a great place it is to visit in South East Asia with kids.  And I love the fact that now that I am a parent, I’m able to take my daughter to Singapore for our family travels from Australia.

We love Singapore for numerous reasons. Although Singapore’s national language is Mandarin, everyone speaks English, it is one of the cleanest countries not only in Asia but in the world (chewing gum is prohibited in in Singapore), it’s a small island country so it’s easy to navigate and it has a plethora of family friendly attractions.

Sentosa Island has revamped itself into an entertainment hub and now houses Universal Studios , one of the world’s largest oceanarium, Trick Eye museum and the super fun luge. Apart from Sentosa, they have the Night Safari , the world’s first nocturnal zoo and Gardens by the Bay which houses about 1 million plants.

Singapore is one of those destinations you can visit as a family regardless of the age of the children as there truly is something for everyone. Particularly useful if you have kids of varying ages.

The food scene in Singapore is worth the mention as you hunt down the best chilli mud crabs or dine in the world’s first Michelin Star Peranakan restaurant in Dempsey. For the shopper in your tweens and teens, there certainly isn’t a shortage of shopping malls or the edgier indie boutiques on Haji Lane.

If you’re looking for a gentle introduction into a Southeast Asian country, Singapore would be your best bet. Without too much of a culture shock yet enough to satiate your curiosity, it’s a fantastic family getaway.

4. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Sharon’s pick of best places to visit in South East Asia with kids is Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Kuala Lumpur is one of our favourite destinations for a family trip in the world. This is because it is easy to navigate, there are lots of great family attractions, the food is unreal and it’s a very affordable price. It’s also very easy to reach here from Australia and very economical as well, thanks to Air Asia. My kids’ favourite attraction is KidZania.

And thanks to English being a common language in Malaysia, this is a great one to visit. If you have never been to KidZania, it’s like a kids’ world where kids get to try out different occupations from being a pilot to a surgeon to operating a cash register in a shop. It’s highly educational and engaging and my kids love it.

After you’ve finished with KidZania , there is the KLCC area where there is one of the biggest playgrounds in the world. There is also a huge water play area. Next to the park is a fabulous science museum as well as an aquarium. This is also where you’ll find the huge Petronas Twin Towers and a big shopping centre. 

There are also many cultural attractions in Kuala Lumpur from walking around Little India to exploring Chinatown as well as some of the interesting colonial architecture. I also recommend you eat everything you can! The food is so good especially the Malay, Chinese and Indian.

When you are ready for more kid attractions, there’s the big Sunway Lagoon theme park and Lake Gardens where you can find many attractions especially the very impressive KL Bird Park . For indoor fun, the Berjaya Times Square is not just a massive shopping centre but has a big indoor theme park.

This is also our favorite place to stay. There is a hotel above the shopping center which makes it very easy to access food and amenities. If you are looking for the perfect launch pad for your next adventure, go to Kuala Lumpur! It is after all one of the best places to visit in South East Asia with kids!

5. Penang, Malaysia

Penang is one of my absolute favorite places in South East Asia with kids. I mean for one thing, the island has an incredible café culture . Most of these places have a lot of stuff to entertain the kids at. We carried our own set of toys and entertainment but they never failed to bring in colors and activities which kept the kids entertained.

Plus walking along the streets of George town is super easy with kids. We had ours in a stroller and managed to roll it everywhere. We even took it up Penang hill. Mind you, we had two toddlers in tow.

If your kids love to eat Malay food then I recommend starting out with one of the famous breakfast spots in Penang . There are many that serve more than Malay food. The din sums were a big hit with our kids.

Also don’t forget to take your kids on a trishaw ride when it the city!

6. Kaohsiung, Taiwan

Cerise’s pick of best places to visit in South East Asia with kids is Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

Kaohsiung, Taiwan (pronounced “Gow-Shung”) is the second largest city in Taiwan and a perfect destination for a trip to Asia with kids. Named as one of Lonely Planet’s Top 10 cities to visit in 2018 ,  you will quickly discover how vibrant, friendly, affordable and safe it is to visit this city of 3 million people.

Kids and adults will enjoy the Lotus Pond whimsical lion and dragon pagodas as well as the viewpoint from the top. Ice cream vendors are often set up on the weekends, souvenir and postcard shops are nearby, and festivals are common here during major holidays like the Dragon Boat Festival.

Kaohsiung’s Pier 2 Art District is famous for large-scale public art near the harbour with huge transformers and characters perfect for a fun selfie.

We like going to Cijin Island with a black sand beach on the weekends where you can rent family electric bikes, play beach games, eat fresh seafood, and watch the sunset over the ocean.

Known for its diversity of parks, the Art Museum is a favorite attraction in Kaohsiung with an outdoor sandbox, pretty gardens, walking paths, and awesome wooden forts the kids always climb. I like taking the kids to nearby Monkey Mountain (yes, there are real, live monkeys everywhere!) for a morning hike and spectacular view of the city. 

The Dome of Light MRT station will have kids gazing at the rainbow display of lights at this popular metro stop that often attracts dancers and musicians practicing.

As evening sets, colourful lighted boats go up and down the Love River in Kaohsiung. Plan a picnic for a relaxing, family-friendly evening in Kaohsiung. Kids will think it’s a treat to bring sushi or night market snacks to the park. Our kids especially think its a novelty when we shop for dinner at 7-11! Put Taiwan on your list for visiting SE Asia with kids and make a stop in Kaohsiung.

7. Halong Bay, Vietnam

Melissa’s pick of best places to visit in South East Asia with kids is Halong Bay, Vietnam.

Halong Bay is one of the most scenic regions in Vietnam and is a must do for anyone visiting the country, including adventurous families.  The bay is filled with thousands of giant limestone cliffs which jut from the water and are covered with lush rainforests.

Halong Bay is best visited by a 1 or 2-night cruise .  There are some great family boats with large rooms able to cater the entire family.

During the day families will love kayaking among the spectacular scenery and during the warmer months you can even jump right off the boat for swimming. Most of the boats follow a similar itinerary which includes a stop to explore some caves as well as climbing to a look out where you can get a fantastic view across the bay – perfect family photo opportunity!

All meals are provided on board and most boats even have a bit of a karaoke party and disco.  Our daughter said this was the highlight of the trip for her! Other activities during the cruise include night squid fishing and if you can manage to get up early enough, Tai Chi. 

Some boats even have cooking classes.  If you can manage to get a few minutes alone, for me, I just loved sitting on the deck and watching the gorgeous scenery pass me by.

There are a range of cruise boats to choose from, but I recommend looking for a mid-range one – as these boats usually have great family rooms so you can bunk on in together.

Cruises depart from Halong Bay, but the cruise operators will arrange transfers for you from Hanoi, around a 4 hour drive from Halong Bay. For families visiting Vietnam an overnight cruise on Halong Bay is an absolute must and will be something your families remembers for a lifetime.

8. Hanoi, Vietnam

Ania’s pick of best places to visit in South East Asia with kids is Hanoi, Vietnam.

Hanoi ticks so many boxes for us but the biggest is that it’s just such a lovely haphazard feel-good place to wander around.  I know that’s not much to go on, so here are some more tangible reasons why Hanoi consistently ranks in the top ten tourist destinations.

Food: It’s both delicious and healthy.  Our girls are as resistant to green stuff as most kids but let them roll a fresh Vietnamese salad into a circle of rice paper, then wash it down with a bowl of Pho, (chicken and herb broth), and they come back screaming for more.

That’s at the street food end of the spectrum.  More upmarket restaurants are also child-friendly and with world-class presentation and flavour. Some even offer cooking classes and food tours around markets. Here you can buy anything from a live chicken to a bag of dried seahorses.

Browsing:   As perennial travellers, we consider ourselves resistant to souvenirs.  But this doesn’t apply here. Hanoi merchandise combines craftsmanship, creative art, quality and low cost. 

We came away with hand-carved wooden print blocks, posters, 3-D paper engineering, and oil paintings, not to mention tee-shirts and jackets.  There were all dead cheap, but still beloved by us a couple of years after our first trip.

Low-cost accommodation:   We have stayed in four hotels in Hanoi Old Quarter.  All were tiny, friendly, quirky, clean and tremendously friendly.  We have many stories of extra-helpful staff and management.

History: It has a colourful and for us Westerners, sometimes an uncomfortable past.  Oriental mystery combines with the aggressive impact of such diverse nations as China, France and the United States.  What shines through is good-natured human resilience. All this is tangible in buildings and cultural relics. It gives a fascinating depth to the spirit of the place.

But the real reason why we will return to Hanoi with kids .  It is simply a lovely place. Enjoy!

9. Bali, Indonesia

Kate’s pick of best places to visit in South East Asia with kids is Bali, Indonesia.

Bali is a fantastic location in South East Asia to travel with kids. There is such a wide range of activities to do and places to stay. Whatever your budget is, you can find fun things to do with the kids.

Waterbom waterpark is one of our all-time favorites and with the kids we have been 5 times! So much fun trying out all the waterslides and the gazebos make a great spot for the younger kids to have a nap.

A bike ride through the Bali countryside is not to be missed. Suitable for all ages, we also visited a Balinese school, coffee plantation, Mt Batur, family compound and finally enjoyed lunch overlooking the rice fields. If you are looking for rice fields then one of the best places to catch the experience is at the Tegalalang rice fields .

The kids love learning about new cultures and Bali is so accessible for this to happen. Temples, rice terraces, cooking classes , white water rafting , Balinese dance, the list goes on of things to enjoy for the whole family.

Finding family accommodation in Bali will leave you completely confused! There are so many options in different locations with every budget well looked after. If it’s your first time to Bali I recommend staying in the tourist areas of Sanur, Seminyak, Legian, Jimbaran, Ubud or Nusa Dua. Here you will get a feel of Bali but also have access to western supermarkets and restaurants.

The list of Bali hotels with kid’s facilities is long and waterslides, kid’s clubs and kid’s menus are throughout the tourist areas. If you just want to relax and enjoy all that the real Bali has to offer you are in luck, cheap guesthouses that welcome kids are everywhere.

The hospitality of the Balinese is what makes Bali such a great destination with kids. Their smiles and genuine love of kids will make you feel so welcomed that you will find it hard adjusting back to life after your Bali family holiday.

10. Chiang Mai, Thailand

Allan’s pick of best places in South East Asia with kids is Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Thailand is not always best-known as a family-friendly destination, but the country itself is undoubtedly fascinating, with nature, local culture, and it just offers the perfect introduction to the mystery of the Orient. And Chiang Mai, the cultural capital of the North, would be one of the better destinations to explore, with its relaxed and friendly atmosphere, as well as its diversity in scenery and attractions.

And it is the ideal vantage point to discover the northern ‘Lanna’ provinces where excursions to the not-far borders of Laos and Myanmar share all sorts of unique cultures including the well-celebrated hill tribes which occasionally offer homestays for cross-cultural experiences.

There are also many excursions and attractions nearer to the centre of Chiang Mai, although they can be an ethical landmine at times. At the same time, there are many eco-friendly and eco-learning opportunities, for example, the ‘Elephant Nature Park’ is home to 30+ elephants, many saved from the dubious tourist camps, where they now roam free and happy.

And it’s a bit like a home for rescued animals. Or for just something fun, there are various excursions for white water rafting , ATV Quad Biking , ziplining, and for the younger ones the ‘Art in Paradise’ 3D Art Museum can be fun.

The old city area can be a bit chaotic at times when it comes to accommodation in Chiang Mai, so it may be best to stay outside in the quieter areas, where it is still easy to travel into the center at any time. As Chiang Mai is small and inexpensive. And for comfortable travel, the best option would probably be the Grab Taxi App (they bought over Uber), although Tuk-Tuks will always be fun.

So, some of the better outside options would be the Chiang University area, where there’s a lot of parks and green spaces, although for a mix of both excitement and laidback life the Nimman area works well. Found beneath the backdrop of Mount Suthep.

Here the quiet side streets (sois) are dotted with quirky cafés, international foods, and there is the nearby Maya Mall which is perfect to escape the midday hears for air-conditioned shopping and entertainment.

11. Nha Trang, Vietnam

Sandra’s pick of best places in South East Asia with kids is Nha Trang, Vietnam.

When describing Nha Trang to friends back home, I tell them she is like the love child of Waikiki Beach and Surfers Paradise. She’s all neon and glitz against a long stretch of palm tree-lined sandy beach.

There are beachside restaurants and open bars, touts on almost every corner selling crocodile-skin purses, local pho and banh mi stands mixed in between the upmarket seafood buffet restaurants. You don’t come to Nha Trang for a tranquil experience, but you can have still a brilliant time as a family.

We stayed in Nha Trang for almost 3 months – me, my husband and our then 3-year-old son.  We rented a furnished apartment directly across from the beach with magnificent coastal views. We didn’t intend to stay for 3 months, but we loved Nha Trang from the moment we arrived, and she grew on us even more.

Our days began with a walk along the beach front, followed by a dip in the sea to cool down. We bought an annual pass to Vinpearl Island, an island amusement park, and frequently took the stunning 3km cable car ride across the sea to Vinpearl Island Resort. The amusement park is great fun for all ages.

There are rides for all ages, waterslides for the bigger kids and adults, a kid’s pool and a family-friendly wave pool where we hung out a lot. The beach at Vinpearl Island is even nicer than the beach at Nha Trang. It was calmer and cleaner, and we often had the whole beach to ourselves.

We ended our days with sand play on the beach and another dip in the sea before dinner at one of the local restaurants around town. Riding the local buses was a lot of fun. We visited the giant White Buddha at Long Son Pagoda.

We could see this giant statue 6km away from our apartment. It’s well worth a visit.  Nha Trang is a fantastic and fun seaside destination for families. It’s easily accessible with cheap flights from Ho Chi Minh City or take the 8-hour train ride.
