A Six-Decade Tour of Barbie’s Dreamhouses

From midcentury modern to a Gen-Z collab house, Barbie has kept up with design trends.

In 1962, three years after Barbie was born, Mattel introduced Barbie’s Dreamhouse: a folding ranch house that was the first of many domiciles that evolved with the times.

After beginning modestly in cardboard, the Dreamhouses became plastic, pastel, palatial and electrified, often all at once. They acquired elevators, sun decks, modern European furniture, recycling bins and multiple bedrooms — though Barbie remained perennially single and holding the lease (or mortgage).

To honor this 60-year milestone, Mattel collaborated with the design magazine PIN-UP on a limited-edition art book, “ Barbie Dreamhouse: An Architectural Survey .” The 151-page monograph tracks the evolution of Dreamhouses through six examples, shown with their original furnishings and architectural blueprints.

What readers will not see is Barbie herself, or any of her friends or family. With Greta Gerwig’s “ Barbie ” movie opening in July and the doll’s hyper-pink aesthetic hitting Instagram like a strawberry milkshake tsunami, feminist revulsion toward the doll is taking a back seat to ironic celebration.

“Camp has become the white noise of our culture,” said Whitney Mallett, a contributing editor of PIN-UP, who edited the book with Felix Burrichter, the magazine’s founder (the design and concept are by Ben Ganz).

The book examines the cultural and architectural forces that shaped the Dreamhouses over the decades, including Queen Anne Victorianism, midcentury modernism and back-to-the-land granola-ism.

It also quotes writers, artists and architects on how Barbitecture shaped their own psyches. “Barbie’s house is infinitely more exciting than Barbie herself,” writes Elvia Wilk, a cultural critic. “The structures we live within — fantasize about living within — say more about our lives and dreams than plastic bodies ever will.”

Cardboard Fantasy

Barbie’s first home, a cardboard ranch house that unfolded from a case, is strikingly masculine, with its bold plaids and midcentury wood grains. Was this the only acceptable aesthetic for a young woman embarking on a single life in 1962? Yes, if she is a college student, Mr. Burrichter said, pointing out the varsity pennants and lack of a kitchen. “I think it’s a coded dorm room,” he said.

Bohemian Townhouse

The three-story townhouse features a mod palette and Victoriana touches. Mr. Burrichter and Ms. Mallett associate the clubby bohemian décor (Tiffany lamps, greenery) with the era’s singles bars.

Progressive Cabin

Call it early cabin porn. This A-frame was constructed in three sections that could be pulled apart and reconfigured. Doing so reminded Mr. Burrichter of the houses built by Charles Moore and other progressive architects at Sea Ranch, the Northern California development.

Bubble Gum Mansion

Barbie went full bubble-gum pink and dreamy in the 1990s, and “really leaned into hyperfemininity,” Ms. Culmone said. The Doric columns, Palladian windows and rooftop sun deck are also a natural companion to the McMansions sprouting in American suburbs.

Future Victorian

This lavender Queen Anne Victorian-style mansion seemed like a throwback when it was released before the new millennium. But it bore an unmistakable resemblance to the house featured in a painting that hung in the original Dreamhouse — as if Barbie “manifested” it, Ms. Mallett said.

Content House

While the first Dreamhouse unfolded like a sitcom set for a single camera, the most recent iteration is a TikTok-ready tower that can be filmed from infinite angles — not unlike the real-life collab houses where influencers create content.

World of Barbie experience tour: How can I get tickets?

MATTEL is bringing Barbie's dream house to cities throughout North America in an immersive experience.

Those wishing to visit the dream house will be able to walk through and stroll down the streets of Barbie's neighborhood.

When is the World of Barbie?

Mattel partnered with Kilburn Live to bring the immersive World of Barbie to fans of all ages.

The Barbie dream house will be a main focal point and was first created in 1962.

The immersive experience is now providing individuals of all ages with the opportunity to step into their childhood playset.

Kilburn CEO Mark Manuel said in a press release to the US Sun, “We were asked to bring Barbie’s playset to life. Who can say no to that opportunity?

“Barbie is as relevant today as she was when she was first introduced to the world 63 years ago, if not more.

"I watched my daughter live and play in her world, I believe it helped shape her sharp and lively imagination, just like it has for millions of other children growing up. So there were a lot of reasons we needed to get this right.”

Other features will include a lifesize version of Barbie's pink camper van, patio, and a fake swimming pool.

The tour will kick off in Toronto, Ontario in July 2022 and People reported Barbie's dream house will travel to New York, Houston, Texas, Los Angeles, California, Chicago, Illinois, and more.

More locations are expected to come but tour dates have not yet been released.

Why is the barbie dream house going on tour.

The Barbie dream house will provide a sense of nostalgia for fans who grew up with the playset and will bring back memories of their childhood, the CEO of Kilburn Live, Mark Manuel told People .

For younger Barbie fans, Manuel said this is an opportunity for people of all ages to immerse themselves in Barbie's world.

"Stepping into Barbie's real-life dream house, being transported to Malibu, sitting down in her camper van…there's no age limit to that," Manuel said.

"You also have an older generation who's going to walk through and be brought back to their childhood days," he added.

Barbie's dream house came during a time when women didn't have many rights but promoted a doll who had a career and her own home.

 “Throughout her history and numerous careers, Barbie has represented a world of limitless potential,” Julie Freeland, Senior Director of Location Based Entertainment at Mattel said in a press release to the US Sun.

“With this exquisitely designed attraction, we were intentional about delivering an exciting experience that would leave younger fans with the sense that they could do anything or be anything.

"And, for those who grew up with Barbie, we wanted to spark a little bit of nostalgia, give these fans a chance to step back, re-invent themselves, if only for an afternoon, and spend a day in the Dream Life!”

What attractions will be at the World of Barbie?

The press release says the following attractions will be included in the World of Barbie immersive experience:

• Barbie Dreamhouse – Visitors will be able to explore the designed rooms of the Barbie Dreamhouse, complete with a patio party and a DJ kit to mix music at the side of Barbie's pool.
• Barbie Camper Van – The life-size van will be parked in front of the dreamhouse and will allow guests to sit in the driver's seat and relax in Barbie's life-size hammock.
• Fashion Studio – Guests will be able to walk Barbie's pink carpet and pose inside of one of the six life-size Barbie boxes.
• TV Studio – Visitors can step onto the set of The Barbie Show and deliver headlines, give the weather report, or interview other guests.
• Space Center – Visitors will be able to board Barbie's space shuttle to interact with mission control and track objects on radar.

Tickets for the Barbie dream house tour are available for pre-sale on The World of Barbie website .

Those wishing to attend should note that pre-sale tickets are only available for the immersive experience in Toronto and should check back for updates.

Emceed by Ms. Barbie, Margot Robbie, a new Architectural Digest tour gives you a peak inside a life-size Barbie Dreamhouse with all of the 2-D appliances your heart desires. Director Greta Gerwig even shows off the different pink shades that were used for the set, at one point showing off the versions of a “white” shade, which is to say, lighter pink, of course! “I can’t even tell you the meetings we had about pink,” Gerwig says. There were also lovely rules like “There is no water in Barbieland.” (Life in plastic means no swimming, unfortunately.) The only side effect of this pink-splosion is that you’ll be sad you can’t move in. Comfort yourself with the knowledge that it’s only about a month until the Barbie movie finally comes out on July 23. That’s hot (pink)!

Fans Are Obsessed With Margot Robbie’s Barbie Dreamhouse Tour

It’s everything we could have hoped for and more!

The film’s star Margot Robbie showed off the real-life Barbie Dreamhouse from the movie over on Architectural Digest ’s YouTube channel .

As expected, there is a lot of pink. So much pink that the movie allegedly caused a worldwide shortage of pink paint during filming. There’s everything from a pink fridge, toaster, stove and dining room table in the kitchen, to a magical Clueless -style pink wardrobe that houses all of Barbie’s clothing and accessories.

In the video, the movie’s director Greta Gerwig revealed, “I wanted to capture what was so ridiculously fun about the Dreamhouses. We sat with all these different kinds of pinks and we were like, ‘What is the pink? How do the pinks interact?’ When I was a girl, I wanted the brightest things.”

But it’s not just all about Barbie’s favorite color. Specific details bring the Dreamhouse to life while also giving a nod to the dollhouses that children the world over grew up playing with. For example, the kitchen had decals of food instead of real food. Even the hair brushes and toothbrushes are larger than life, giving viewers that true doll-like experience.

When it comes to Robbie’s favorite detail in the Dreamhouse, it is the giant twisty water slide that connects Barbie’s bedroom to the waterless pool.

Robbie recalled having that one special request when the Dreamhouse came to life. “Please, please, please can we have a Dreamhouse where she has a slide that goes from her bedroom down to her pool because that is my goal in life,” the actor asked the director.

The house itself was influenced by 1950s and early 1960s design—with the famous doll being invented in 1959—and immediately conjures up the feeling of a mid-century Palm Springs home.

Fans have taken to social media to share their excitement.

One person tweeted: “need to live in the barbie dreamhouse immediately.”

While another added: “waking up in the barbie dreamhouse would solve all of my problems.”

A third affirmed: “the barbie dreamhouse set tour on architectural digest. oh i was sat. best 7 mins and 25 seconds i’ve ever spent on youtube.”

The Dreamhouse will be up on the big screen very soon when the movie comes out on July 21.

Margot Robbie Gives a Full Tour of the "Surreal" Live-Action "Barbie" Dreamhouse

Just one month before the theatrical release of Greta Gerwig's live-action Barbie movie , Margot Robbie gave a full tour of the Dreamhouse. In an Architectural Digest video shared on June 16, the actor offered an inside look at the life-size dollhouse constructed with playtime in mind.

"Even though it's fake, it's really beautiful."

"It was pretty incredible seeing the set for the first time," Robbie said during the tour. "It was kind of surreal because I'd spent so long looking at the miniatures, and the models, and the drawings, and the design of what it was going to look like. Then when you see it firsthand, in real life, it's all there and it was really exciting."

Like the toy it's designed after, the all-pink Dreamhouse is completely open-concept, omitting walls to showcase the living room, breakfast nook, bar, and pool area all at once. The house also features a kitchen stocked with plastic food containers and 2D decals printed with everything from ketchup to a two-tier cake stacked with whipped cream. "Not super practical, but nothing is with Barbie," Robbie said. Other standouts include the bubble bath with perpetually suspended bubbles, a massive Barbie wardrobe , and handmade props that tell the story of Barbie's evolution from the late '50s through today.

The true showpiece of the house, though, is the swirling slide that connects the upstairs bedroom to the faux pool. "It's actually funny to see how many people avoid walking [on the pool] — everyone walks around the pool," Robbie said. "Even though it's fake, it's really beautiful, which is kind of like everything in Barbie Land."

In the video's comments section, fans of Barbie and Gerwig's work were quick to express their excitement at seeing the Dreamhouse up close. "They did such an amazing job, my mind just couldn't wrap around the idea that the houses were actual human size and that everyone hadn't been shrunk down and put into a toy land!" one YouTube user wrote. Another commenter added, "The dreamhouse came straight out of a fairytale book. It really is something Barbie would want to live in."

'World of Barbie' experience making US debut this spring in Los Angeles

Barbie's Dreamhouse is no longer a dream: Beginning this spring, you'll be able to step through the doors to her Malibu home and find out if life in plastic is really as fantastic as it seems. The World of Barbie, a partnership between Mattel and branded live entertainment group Kilburn Live, is an immersive experience that transports Barbie fans into Barbie's pastel pink world.

After a wildly successful run in Toronto, the World of Barbie is launching stateside. Tickets go on sale March 8 for World of Barbie's U.S. debut in the Los Angeles area at Santa Monica Place on April 14.

While there, you can lounge in Barbie's perfectly decorated living room and walk the pink carpet; you can also try on some of Barbie's fashionable personalities by stepping into life-size doll boxes with themes like "Western" and "fashionista." Outside, you can lounge on Barbie's patio and splash in the pool.

It is plastic, so no diving is allowed.

Not only will you be able to walk through Barbie's home, but you'll also have a chance to tour her very pink camper van and explore areas themed to a few of Barbie's many careers — including newscaster, lab scientist and astronaut. You can enjoy snacks from a Barbie-themed cafe and visit a museum that chronicles Barbie's history and evolution.

Special events will occur throughout World of Barbie's Los Angeles run. For instance, on Pink Carpet Night, guests are encouraged to don their best pink outfits. They can also enjoy Movie Days with Barbie animated films as well as Sips After Sunset nights with live music and themed cocktails.

The photo opportunities are endless, but World of Barbie's creators hope visitors come away with more than selfies.

Their goal is for kids to be inspired to dream big like Barbie — the only doll in history who has held down simultaneous careers as a pilot and a rock star and managed to look flawless doing both. Adults who grew up with Barbie can reminisce about the doll they've loved since childhood and admire how she has evolved throughout the years.

Tickets for Los Angeles World of Barbie dates start at $34 for adults and $26 for children. On the World of Barbie website, you can sign up for exclusive access to advance ticket sales and be the first to know if Barbie packs up her pink suitcase for a visit to your town.

Take an Architectural Tour of Barbie's Dreamhouse

A new book tracks the design icon’s enduring cultural significance over the course of six decades..

Having first arrived on the Malibu scene in 1959, Barbara Millicent Roberts – or Barbie , as you may better know her – has since been the center of many debates surrounding societal ideals. Every inch of her plastic makeup has been scrutinized, but now, a new book is looking beyond the world’s most famous doll herself and taking a deep dive into her surroundings.

“Barbie Dreamhouse: An Architectural Survey” takes an all-encompassing view of the sometimes fantastical, sometimes surprisingly normal homes released by Mattel each year since 1962. Inside, six Dreamhouses are presented, alongside the corresponding collections of furniture, in a bid to draw parallels between the culture of the times and how it influenced the design of the spaces and objects. Commissioned by Mattel on the occasion of the Dreamhouse’s 60th anniversary, the 151-page publication is the brainchild of PIN-UP Magazine’s team: graphic designer Ben Ganz, and editors Felix Burrichter and Whitney Mallett. “Both Felix and I grew up with Barbies,” Mallett says. “They got Felix into interior design, and got me into storytelling – so playing with them was very impactful for both of us”. When it came to pitching an idea to Mattel – the pair’s background in architectural publishing offered up a unique perspective that was yet to be applied to the doll’s famous abode.

. Post-Communist underground stations in Moscow, like the recently completed Pyatnitskoye shosse, are still, very visibly, Moscow Metro stations. Regardless of the need or otherwise for nuclear shelters, they’re still buried deep in the ground; ubiquitous still is the expensive, laborious, but highly legible and architecturally breathtaking practice of providing high-ceilinged vaults with the trains leaving from either side. There have been attempts at “normal” metro lines, like the sober stations built under Khrushchev, or the “Light Metro” finished in 2003, but they didn’t catch on. Largely, the model developed in the mid-1930s continues, and not just in Moscow — extensions in Kiev or St Petersburg, or altogether new systems in Kazan or Almaty, carry on this peculiar tradition. Metro stations are still being treated as palaces of the people, over two decades after the “people’s” states collapsed. This could be a question of maintaining quality control, but then quality is not conspicuous in the Russian built environment. So why does this endure?

. The original, 1930s Moscow Metro was the place where even the most skeptical fellow travellers threw away their doubts and surrendered. Bertolt Brecht wrote an awe-filled poem on the subject, “The Moscow Workers Take Possession of the Great Metro on April 27, 1935,” dropping his habitual irony and dialectic to describe the Metro workers perusing the system they’d built on the day of its opening. At the end, the poet gasps, his guard down, “This is the grand picture that once upon a time/ rocked the writers who foresaw it” — that is, that here, at least, a dream of “Communism” had been palpably built. It was not an uncommon reaction, then or now, nostalgia notwithstanding. The first stations, those Brecht was talking about, were not particularly over-ornamented, especially by the standards of what came later, but their extreme opulence and spaciousness was still overwhelming. Stations like Sokolniki or Kropotkinskaya didn’t bludgeon with classical reminisces and mosaics. Yet three things about the underground designs created by architects Alexei Dushkin, Ivan Fomin, Dmitry Chechulin et al were unprecedented in any previous public transport network, whether Charles Holden’s London, Alfred Grenander’s Berlin or Hector Guimard’s Paris. First, the huge size of the halls, their high ceilings and widely-spaced columns; second, the quality of the materials, with various coloured marbles shipped in from all over the USSR; and third, the lighting, emerging from individually-designed, surreal chandeliers, often murkily atmospheric, designed to create mood rather than light.
