Set details [ | ]

Like its predecessors, Journey into Nyx has an ancient Greek-themed top-down design, making use of many mythological tropes. The set contains 165 cards (60 Common, 60 Uncommon, 35 Rare, 10 Mythic) and includes randomly inserted premium versions of all cards. Fitting in with the "enchantment matters" theme, 59 of the set's 165 cards carry the enchantment type. The set introduces the Lamia creature type .

Flavor and storyline [ | ]

The plane of Theros is in chaos. Gods and mortals are pitted against each other, and terrifying monsters stalk the land. Heroes strive for glory while new and terrifying constellations take shape in the night sky . Supported by Ajani , Elspeth travels to Nyx and kills Xenagos . Afraid of her power, Heliod kills Elspeth. [5]

Themes and mechanics [ | ]

Journey into Nyx has a heavy theme of "enchantments matter", and those cards were "pushed" to a higher power level to ensure that enchantments would be key components of competitive decks. [14] [15] The keywords Bestow , Heroic , Scry , Monstrosity , Inspired and Devotion returned from the previous sets (with monstrosity skipping one set). [16] [17] Two new ability words were added: constellation and strive . Enchantments with constellation abilities represent the divine constellations that fill the night sky . [18] [19] An enchantment's constellation ability triggers every time it or another enchantment enters the battlefield under the player's control. Most of the enchantments with constellation abilities are enchantment creatures , but not all of them. A spell with a strive ability lets you pump more mana into it to increase the number of targets . [20]

Journey into Nyx Prerelease Primer

Elspeth Tirel, knight errant, sun's champion, and all-around awesome Planeswalker, led the humans of Theros to a great victory over Mogis's trampling horde of minotaurs. Her reward?

Banishment.

But Elspeth is a hero, and a great one at that, so when the sun god Heliod called upon her, she answered...

Resoundingly.

The call for heroes has gone out. Will you join Elspeth and travel to Nyx? Will you, this weekend, Forge a Godslayer to kill a god?

The Prerelease Experience

The hero's path, journey into nyx mechanics.

Deicide | Art by Jason Chan

A Prerelease is your first chance to play with cards from a new set (in this case, Journey into Nyx !). In this section, I'll walk you through the basics of attending one. (If you've been to Prereleases before, feel free to skip down to The Hero's Path .) At a Prerelease, players of all play levels mingle in a friendly, low-stress environment. So let's go through what to do and expect.

First, find a store . Hopefully, one is near you! Once you've done that, contact the store and find out if it does preregistration. If it does, preregister. Prerelease events across the globe have been selling out for a while now, so it behooves you to preregister if your store allows!

On the day of the Prerelease, make sure to pack some essentials with you:

  • Water and snacks. Fuel up; play better!
  • Cards. People bring decks to play and cards to trade at Prereleases, so make sure to bring yours as well!
  • Sleeves. Protect your cards from sticky tables and spilled drinks!
  • Accoutrements. Dice, tokens, paper, pencils—that sort of thing. Bring something to track counters, creatures, and life totals. Yes, your store will have a lot of these things, but it's always better to be prepared.

All that might seem obvious, but don't be That Person, always borrowing supplies from others.

Seeded Deck

The main event at a Prerelease is the Seeded Deck tournament, a version of Sealed Deck. Like the Theros and Born of the Gods Prereleases before it, the Journey into Nyx Prerelease will feature seeded packs. We'll come back to that , but the important thing to know is that your Prerelease Pack's seeded pack will help you play the color you want to play—it's still not a guarantee, though.

Seeded Deck is based on Sealed Deck, a kind of Magic (known, along with drafting, as "Limited") where you build a deck out of cards you open at that particular Prerelease. In the case of the Journey into Nyx Prerelease, that is one seeded pack and five booster packs (two Journey into Nyx , one Born of the Gods , and two Theros ). You open up all those packs and that becomes your pool, from which you build your deck. The basic guidelines and advice for building a seeded deck are:

  • At least forty cards. You can play more, but you can't play less. (Playing forty exactly makes your deck more consistent, but some people point out that adding an extra land for forty-one cards helps your mana percentages. Which way you go is up to you!)
  • Twenty-three spells and seventeen lands. Of those twenty-three spells, you want sixteen or seventeen creatures, with the balance in removal or support spells.
  • Two colors. Stick to two colors no matter what! Okay, "no matter what" doesn't really apply to Magic . If you have enough playable cards in one color you can go monocolored, but because every color in Magic has its weaknesses, adding a second color helps you shore up where your deck might struggle. Adding a third, fourth, or fifth color challenges your deck's mana base, though, leading to inconsistencies. On the other hand, if you get enough Temples, go for it! Sometimes, playing Five-Color Good Stuff is the right (or at least most fun) strategy.

Two-Headed Giant

Some stores also support a version of Seeded Deck called Two-Headed Giant (often abbreviated "2HG"), where two players team up against other pairs of players. Each pair gets two Prerelease Packs (they don't have to be the same ones, even!) from which the players build their decks. Your tournament organizer can tell you more about 2HG if your store supports it.

Open Dueling

Play with more Journey into Nyx cards by getting involved in Open Dueling. In this side event, you get an Intro Pack and use it to do battle against others participating in Open Dueling, including those playing in the main tournament who are between rounds! This is a great way to learn more about Magic if you're new to the game, and for experienced players it's also an excellent way to teach newer players or help them get better. Also? It's just a lot of fun.

Godsend | Art by Daniel Ljunggren

(Quick Aside. One of the hardest parts of writing these primers is not getting completely distracted by the new set's gorgeous art. End Aside.)

Once again, Experience Designer Dave Guskin and his team came up with a really cool play experience for us. And, I mean, check out what it's called:

Forge a Godslayer

The Journey into Nyx Prerelease presents Quest #7 along the Hero's Path, "Forge a Godslayer." This one is a little involved, so let's walk through it.

First, you have to choose how you want you want forge the weapon. You have five choices, which correspond (not coincidentally) with the five colors in Magic . Here is a handy chart to provide you with an overview:

Once you choose how you want to craft your weapon, you will be provided a Prerelease Pack that looks like this:

Here's a quick list of what you will get in your Prerelease Pack:

  • 2 Journey into Nyx booster packs
  • 1 Born of the Gods booster packs
  • 2 Theros booster packs
  • 1 seeded booster pack
  • 1 promo card
  • 1 Forge a Godslayer activity card
  • 1 Spindown™ life counter
  • 1 welcome letter
  • 1 Hero Card

Your Prerelease Pack is full of neat content, but for right now I'm going to focus on the Hero Card, since it is central to the "Forge a Godslayer" event. That said, your Hero Card isn't played at the Prerelease; it's for the Journey into Nyx Game Day event, which happens May 24–25, 2014.

As an example, let's look at Lash of the Tyrant (because black is the best my favorite color):

If you've seen other Hero Cards, you'll note that this one is a little different. First, it's an Equipment (which Dave Guskin talks about that in his Hero's Path FAQ ). Second, while it has a pretty neat ability, there's an unusual space between the type line and the first line of text for that neat ability. Here's why:

In your Prerelease Pack, you will also receive a Forge a Godslayer activity card with three spaces on it for component stickers. A component sticker is a... well, sticker... that you get after each match (the winner of the match gets first pick from among three, then the loser gets to pick one of the two remaining).

Combine three component stickers in specific ways to create one of seven different enhancements, then hand in your activity card to your tournament organizer to receive the corresponding enhancement sticker. Then you take that sticker and put it on your Hero Card in the blank space as a new permanent ability.

Congratulations! You have created your god-slaying weapon!

Okay, I've covered the Hero Card and the Forge a Godslayer activity card, and the booster packs are self-explanatory. Your welcome letter and Spindown™ life counter are color-coordinated with your Prerelease Pack, as are your promo card and seeded booster pack. I'll talk about that last one in a mo, but for now let me show you what your choices look like , so you have a better sense of what you want to pick:

If your weapon is Forged in Glory (white), you get:

If your weapon is Forged in Intellect (blue), you get:

If your weapon is Forged in Tyranny (black), you get:

If your weapon is Forged in War (red), you get:

If your weapon is Forged in Pursuit (green), you get:

You can play your promo card in your deck at the Prerelease, which should help you play the color you picked for your Prerelease Pack. And speaking of helping you play that color, your seeded pack contains a selection of Journey into Nyx cards weighted toward the chosen color. So, for example, if you pick Forged in Tyranny (black), you will get a seeded pack with mostly (but not exclusively) black cards in it, all from Journey into Nyx , including one rare. Oh but wait! That rare can actually be a mythic rare God card that shares the color you picked (but no other mythic rare).

Final note for your Prerelease Pack: You are not in any way required to choose the color for Journey into Nyx that corresponds to your path(s) or destiny(s) for Theros or Born of the Gods (if you went to either or both of those Prereleases).

Mechanics of Journey into Nyx

Solidarity of Heroes | Art by Eric Deschamps

Once again, helpful editor and steward of Uncharted Realms, Kelly Digges, has provided us with an overview of the mechanics of Journey into Nyx . Each section here provides a link to the appropriate mechanic in the "Mechanics of Journey into Nyx " article, in case you want to know more.

Constellation: Enchantments with constellation abilities represent the divine constellations that fill the night sky of Theros .An enchantment's constellation ability triggers every time it or another enchantment enters the battlefield under your control. For more details, see the constellation section of the "Mechanics of Journey into Nyx " article.

Strive: As you cast a spell with strive , you can choose any number of targets, paying an additional cost for each target beyond the first. For more details, see the strive section of the "Mechanics of Journey into Nyx " article.

Bestow: A creature with bestow gives you the option to cast it as an Aura that enchants a creature, granting that creature its power, toughness, and abilities. For more details, see the bestow section of the "Mechanics of Journey into Nyx " article.

Heroic: A creature with a heroic ability gives you powerful benefits every time you cast a spell that targets it. For more details, see the heroic section of the "Mechanics of Journey into Nyx " article.

Scry: Scry is a keyword action that always has a number associated with it. To scry , look at that many cards from the top of your library, put as many of them as you want on the bottom of your library, and leave the rest on top in any order you choose. For more details, see the scry section of the "Mechanics of Journey into Nyx " article.

Monstrosity: A creature with monstrosity lets you pay a one-time cost to grant it greater power and toughness, sometimes with additional abilities and effects. For more details, see the monstrosity section of the "Mechanics of Journey into Nyx " article.

Gods: Each God in Born of the Gods is two colors and manifests as a creature if your devotion to its two colors is high enough. Your devotion to two colors is the total number of mana symbols of those colors among the mana costs of permanents you control. For more details, see the Gods section of the "Mechanics of Journey into Nyx " article.

Begin Your Journey!

I hope this primer has helped you ready yourself for the Journey into Nyx Prerelease. Remember to preregister if your store allows it!

We are always looking for ways to improve the primers, so if there is anything you particularly like or dislike, please feel free to send me an email (at the link below) or tweet at me . It's hard to balance the primer to be helpful for both new and experienced players, so let us know how we're doing!

Speaking of the article and "us," although I am the lone author, putting together a Prerelease Primer is definitely a group effort that reaches all across the building's fourth (brand, organized play, web, legal, sales) and third (R&D) floors. I couldn't do it without everyone's help, so... thanks teams! :)

And to bring this back around to the "you," if you've read this far and want to delve even deeper, there's a lot of advice out there on how to build great sealed decks and on playing Limited Magic in general. Here are some of my favorite advice articles about Limited from DailyMTG:

  • " How I Break Down My Sealed Pool "
  • " Prerelease Prerogatives "
  • " Sealed Deck Reality Check "
  • " Foundations "
  • Nate Price's Price of Progress series
  • " Prerelease Primer " (the original!)

Good luck; have fun!

A Draft Guide for Journey into Nyx

If you're looking for some advice on the Theros Limited format, Seth is here to oblige. He goes over all of the blue, black, and red commons and uncommons from Journey into Nyx to let us know which are great and which to leave in the pack.

By Seth Manfield | @SethManfield | Published 2/7/2023 | 12 min read

I have decided that it is time for me to write a Limited article. I will be going over pick orders for drafting Journey into Nyx. I have a lot of experience drafting this format, and in my opinion the first booster pack of a Draft is the most important. I do consider myself a strong Limited player, and would be happy to hear any feedback on the article. I am going to look over the commons and uncommons in blue, black and red. Of course like any draft format pick orders can change and these are simply general guidelines.

Alright let's start with blue commons and uncommons. Blue:

Hour of Need : This is the best uncommon in the set, and for good reason. Many games involve getting to five mana, making two 4/4's and just winning.

Whitewater Naiads: A five mana 4/4 that gives a creature unblockable when it comes into play is playable. The fact that this guy works with constellation, to be able to reuse the unblockable effect is what makes him above the average power level for a five-drop.

Sigiled Starfish: The more I have drafted the more I have l have grown to appreciate this card. It is currently my top common in the set. Having three toughness is very relevant, and Sigiled Starfish is at its best in a controlling deck that wants to play the long game. Remember the sweet interactions with activating this guy with Flamespeaker Adept or even Knowledge and Power in play.

Hubris : Bounce spells are highly valued in Theros block, and for good reason. That being said Hubris is the worst of the bounce spells. While sometimes you may want to return the enchantment attached to the guy you are bouncing, there will often be times you don't. Sometimes returning a bestowed creature is fine, but you don't usually want to be returning an enchantment that cantrips like Fate Foretold , plus the creature you are bouncing. Bounce spells are at their best in aggressive decks that can gain the most from the tempo gained from a card like Hubris .

Pin to the Earth: This card is playable in an aggressive deck, but at its best in a control deck, which makes it basically the opposite of Cast into Darkness . This card is not only solid removal, but it works with constellation.

Cloaked Siren: This card is exactly what you want for a four mana blue creature.

Riptide Chimera : This is a card that can be built around. After taking him early it is important to value cheap enchantments higher, especially ones that cantrip. In my experience he is either very good, or is left in the sideboard.

War-Wing Siren : This card is quite good even without a ton of ways to target him. I don't like him in a super aggressive deck, but will almost never leave War-Wing Siren in the sideboard.

Triton Cavalry : This card is about on par with War-Wing Siren . Sometimes returning an enchantment can be sweet, but a lot of the time he is just a four mana 2/4.

Crystalline Nautilus : This is a card that goes around quite late, yet has a big upside. Remember that you can bestow this onto an opponent's creature and then target it. I had a deck with this and two Kiora's Followers which made it a five mana "destroy target creature and put a 4/4 into play" a lot of the time. This is a card that you can draft around.

Dakra Mystic : This guy is a one-drop that has utility later in the game. Remember that it also works as a way to get cards into the graveyard, and can even be used as a milling method.

Interpret the Signs : This is a card that will win the game by itself if you have time to cast it. If I draft one of these I am much more likely to try and go blue/black control.

Rise of Eagles : I have been liking this card more and more. While it does have competition at the six drop slot, I usually like one of these in my deck, especially when I am running constellation cards.

Aerial Formation: This is a card that is best in a blue/green deck with lots of ground creatures, some being heroic.

Thassa's Ire: I initially wasn't sure how to evaluate this card. It is situational, but can be very good. I will play it especially in a blue/green constellation deck with cards like Market Festival and Kruphix's Insight .

Kiora's Dismissal : This card is usually worse than a Naturalize effect, and I usually won't maindeck it. That being said having a way to interact with enchantments in a blue deck out of the sideboard is nice.

Font of Fortunes : This card is not good in an aggressive deck, but can be reasonable with a constellation theme, or as just another Divination effect.

Thassa's Devourer : This guy is playable in a slow deck where the mill effect may actually be relevant.

Countermand: If you really need payables playing a four mana hard counter isn't the worst thing ever.

Triton Shorestalker : There is only one pack of Ordeals now.

Pull from the Deep: This card is super slow, though I could see playing it I had a ton of targets.

Godhunter Octopus: If you are in desperate need of a big creature I would still hesitate before playing him. Black:

Gnarled Scarhide : I may value Gnarled Scarhide more than most, but this guy has been super impressive. This card is very good in an aggressive deck. I am fine playing him turn one, or just using him later in the game on an opponent's creature to stop it from blocking.

Feast of Dreams : This card is just Doom Blade a lot of the time, but there will decks that have very few or even zero enchantment creatures. The fact that this is two mana instant speed removal makes it the best black common.

Nightmarish End : This is another piece of removal, and it is important to remember if this card is in your deck to not play excess lands later in the game.

Bloodcrazed Hoplite : I have seen this guy go very late in drafts and I still don't know why. Black aggressive decks are now a thing. This guy is at its best white/black, and if you have him I would value Aspect of Gorgon higher.

Brain Maggot: This guy is great, especially in a deck with a constellation theme. I will always play him if I'm black.

Cast into Darkness : This card is great in a super aggressive deck, and has the added bonus of working with constellation.

Nyx Infusion: This will usually be a cheap piece of removal that works well with constellation. Occasionally it will be right to put Nyx Infusion on your own guy.

Pharika's Chosen. This card is better than Sedge Scorpion , which means that it is quite good. Slower black decks are best friends with this guy.

Spiteful Blow : This card is about on par with Sip of Hemlock. I am always hesitant to pick six mana cards highly, but this is removal.

Grim Guardian : This guy is sweet in control or constellation decks.

Felhide Petrifier : This card turns on the most minotaur's in red/black. If I am going to be trading creatures though I would rather be spending one mana to play Pharika's Chosen than three for this guy.

Dreadbringer Lampads : I personally am a big fan of this dude. He pushes through damage later in the game when few other cards can.

Squelching Leeches : Yes I have seen monoblack drafted before. I would not play this guy in a deck with less than nine swamps.

Rotted Hulk: Originally I didn't like this guy but sometimes he is exactly what you need, five toughness can be a big game.

Returned Reveler: He is a two-drop that has three toughness, which is very rare in the format. This card is better in slower controlling decks.

Aspect of Gorgon : This card is best in aggressive decks with heroic creatures.

Cruel Feeding : This card is nice in a black/green deck where having a way to give big creatures lifegain can turn a game around.

Font of Return : In slower matchups this card can be sweet, though I would hesitate before running it main.

Ritual of the Returned : to be fair I have yet to play with or against this card. I could see there being value to making a surprise blocker, and it works well with ways of getting cards quickly into the graveyard.

Thoughtrender Lamia : This card is overpriced bit sometimes in constellation decks you just have to run whatever enchantments you have.

Agent of Erebos: It is not a good sign if this card is in the maindeck, but it is a nice sideboard card against graveyard strategies.

Tormented Thoughts: Please don't try to make this work. Red:

Mogis's Warhound : Bestowing this card on turn three can just be game over. This card is nuts in red/white aggro.

Forgeborn Oreads: I love this guy in a format filled with one toughness creatures. I think it is about the same power level as Magma Spray .

Magma Spray : Cheap removal is at a premium.

Bladetusk Boar : This card is just awesome, as some decks just can't deal with him.

Riddle of Lightning : I know there are people who don't like Riddle of Lightning . It is still removal, and scrying three is a lot.

Sigiled Skink: Yes this is a two mana 2/1 so I expect I value him higher than most people. The scry one is a big deal, just play with him and I expect you will agree.

Rouse the Mob: This card can be a sweet way of closing a game out, and I see it a lot in red/white decks.

Akroan Line Breaker : This card is nice when you can target him consistently, as he does hit for four, which is pretty hard.

Starfall : I think most people overvalue this card. Paying five to deal three is a lot, but in this format it is playable.

Flurry of Horns : I have been impressed with this card every time I have cast it. The card is at its best in black/red where the creatures are not that good. The creatures having haste is a big deal.

Satyr Hoplite: this guy can be very good, but more often than not he is pretty bad. I won't look to draft him early, but if I do take him I will prioritize Nyxborn Rollicker higher in Born of the Gods.

Blinding Flare: This is another way of finishing the game off. It also works as a way to target your own heroic creatures.

Wildfire Cerberus : The red does start to drop off earlier than some of the other colors. This guy is ok, nothing too exciting.

Gluttonous Cyclops : I have been happy with this card when I have played it. If you need a big creature to finish the game, he isn't flashy, but will get the job done.

Pensive Minotaur: I am usually not happy about my deck when I have to play a three mana 2/3 with no abilities.

Font of Ire: This isn't a format where I find myself wishing there was a Lava Axe in my deck very often.

Flamespeaker's Will: if you see artifacts from your opponent I would consider boarding this in.

Lightning Diadem : This card is overpriced, but sometimes you may have to run it.

Cyclops of Eternal Fury : it is easy to make yourself believe this guy is reasonable. That being said I have been very underwhelmed by this card, as I don't want to be paying six mana for a three toughness creature.

Rollick of Abandon : This is an overpriced Drown in Sorrow type of effect that most red decks aren't looking for.

Spite of Mogis : It is just hard to get a deck with a ton of high quality instants in sorceries. That being said I have seen a blue/red deck where this was quite good.

Knowledge and Power: I have seen this played, but I wouldn't recommend trying to play it without multiple Sigiled Starfish already.

I plan to continue talking about green and white uncommons and commons, along with rares, artifacts, and multicolored cards next week, if there is interest in that.

Thanks for reading, Seth Manfield

Black was the winner of Journey—it has the best cards overall of any color. It has three of the cards in my top five, and I also have Thoughtrender Lamia in my #12 spot. 8. Preparing for Rotation: Journey into Nyx

Preparing for Rotation: Journey into Nyx. by SaffronOlive // Jun 17, 2015. Over the past couple weeks we have been working our way through a series about preparing for the upcoming Standard rotation, first by discussing cards to buy, sell, and hold from Theros, and then doing the same thing for Born of the Gods.

  9. Journey into Nyx

Journey into Nyx is the third and final set in the Theros block. It is the 64th Magic expansion and was released May 2014.[3][4] Like its predecessors, Journey into Nyx has an ancient Greek-themed top-down design, making use of many mythological tropes. The set contains 165 cards (60 Common, 60 Uncommon, 35 Rare, 10 Mythic) and includes randomly inserted premium versions of all cards. Fitting ...

  10. Journey Into Nyx Set Review Part 1: Updates!

Journey into Nyx is awesome. I love brewing with the new cards every time a new set comes out, but it's doubly fun when it is a fun set, a powerful set, a set full of cards that actually add dimensions to the format. Obviously, most of the paths will turn out to be dead ends. That's how these things go. There isn't solid gold beneath ...

In addition to the cards featured in this top 20 list, there were a handful of honorable mentions that missed the cut. Pretty refreshing to get a set that wasn't too good or too bad in terms of cube ...
