The Best Caribbean Islands to Visit in 2024

By Brian Major

British Virgin Islands

I’ve been fortunate to travel widely across the Caribbean over the last 30 years. I’m also a descendant of Caribbean people, so many folks assume I’ve visited every island. Not likely—the Caribbean consists of 28 islands encompassing just over one million square miles. So while I’ve visited most, there are still a handful I’ve yet to encounter. But that’s a good thing. Many know the Caribbean of picture-perfect views —all lush green hillsides, soft beaches, sunny skies, sun loungers, and poolside cocktails. But that’s really just the white-sandy surface of this region, where each island has something distinct to offer. On Dominica , hiking is unmatched, notably its Boiling Lake, a flooded fumarole located in Morne Trois Pitons National Park, where you can traverse across the rim of an active volcano. The best island hopping is in the British Virgin Islands , while Barbados is the action island, where the historic Garrison horse racing takes place year-round.

If you’re looking to soak up some winter sun by a pool lounger and nothing more, then any island in the Caribbean will do—the hotels in St Barth's are amongst some of the best in the world. But if you’re willing to dig a little deeper and venture beyond the resort gates, these are the best islands in the Caribbean.

Which is the best Caribbean island for families?

When little travelers are involved, the ease of a resort jam-packed with activities can take the strain off parents and let everyone enjoy the trip. For this reason, Barbados is the ideal Caribbean island for families, and there’s everything from larger, more affordable resorts to smaller boutique offerings. For intergenerational holidays and trips with slightly older children, consider hiring out a villa— Oliver’s Travels allows customers to filter results by ‘great for kids.’

Barbados

Best island for: action

Barbados might just be one of the best all-rounder islands in the Caribbean. Some of the top hotels in the region are found here, as are some of the best beaches, all accessible to the public—there are no private beaches in Barbados. Poolside beverages are spiked with rum, distilled on the island and best learnt about at St. Nicholas Abbey, a plantation house, museum, and rum distillery. Those looking for more diverse action can find it at the heritage railway, the racing car circuit, and the Garrison Savannah, a popular horse race that takes place throughout the year. And then there are the surrounding reefs, where you can swim with turtles, snorkel with seahorses, and spy whales in winter months.

Where to stay: Sandy Lane Hotel is one of the most glamorous hotels on the island complete with a British or American country club vibe—there are three golf courses on the hotel grounds. For something more low-key, Little Good Harbour ’s rooms feel more like private cottages and its fuss-free restaurant, The Fish Post, is beloved as one of the best in Barbados. For more ideas, consult our list of the best all-inclusive resorts on the island .

Saint Lucia

Best island for: romance

The Caribbean is synonymous with honeymoons but it's St Lucia that tops them all when it comes to serving up romance. You can thank the island’s mountainous landscape for that—it’s all about a room with a view of the 2,000-foot high Piton mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the island’s calling card.

There’s adventure to be found too, like exhilarating zip lines high above the island’s rainforest canopy or mud baths in Sulphur Springs, a geothermically active basin of hot springs and fumaroles within the the dormant Qualibou volcano in Soufrière.

Where to stay: Coconut Bay is the biggest crowd pleaser on the island—all inclusive and catering to couples, families, and even wedding parties. For something more private, Ladera is an eco-lodge where rustic suites have private plunge pools. See our edit of the best resorts in St Lucia for more.

Anguilla

Best island for: beaches

In a region characterized by beautiful beaches , Anguilla has the best in the region. Partly for their mesmerizing ribbon of blue water but also because their powdery white sands invariably host only a handful of other beach-goers. There are 33 beaches in total, and while each one I’ve encountered has been memorable, the standouts to see include Cove Bay, Maundays Bay, Rendezvous Bay, and Shoal Bay.

Anguilla is also a worthy choice for its culinary scene. Refreshingly there are no chain restaurants on the island. Instead, restaurants and eateries tend to be small family-run businesses. If you visit just one, make it Tasty’s, which serves up a stellar coconut-crusted fish and marinated conch salad by Anguillan chef Dale Carty.

Where to stay: The Aurora Anguilla Resort & Golf Club is the newest shiny address on the island, with seven restaurants and bars and a fleet of private jets transporting guests to and from the property. Find more editor-vetted Anguilla hotels here .

British Virgin Islands

British Virgin Islands

Best island for: island hopping

The British Virgin Islands (BVI) territory has few chain restaurants and no large hotels or mass tourism attractions. Instead, you’ll encounter turquoise waters, lush green hillsides, and distinctive cuisine and culture across the four main islands: Anegada, Jost Van Dyke, Tortola, and Virgin Gorda.

Hopping from island to island—whether via public ferry or private catamaran—is the characteristic way to explore the BVI. On my last visit I sailed to Jost Van Dyke’s White Bay, home to casual beachfront eateries serving dangerously delicious rum cocktails and locally caught fish. Another fantastic spot is Willy T’s Floating Bar and Restaurant near Norman Island. Moored offshore, the cargo ship has been converted into an ultra-relaxed eatery.

Where to stay: Located on a broad, secluded calm-water bay on Virgin Gorda, Rosewood Little Dix Bay has 80 villas and suites each staffed with a personal butler. The Reef House is one of three restaurants and features farm-to-fork dining with fresh provisions sourced locally.

Dominica

Best island for: diving

The calm waters surrounding Dominica make it one of the best diving spots in the world. The rainbow-colored seascape is best viewed at Champagne Reef, named for its bubbling waters generated by volcanic thermal springs rising from on the ocean floor. The reef also comprises plummeting cliffs, towering volcanic formations and the remains of a 17th-century Spanish shipwreck.

Another highlight is L'Abym, a dive site located on the island’s southern tip and suited to all skill levels due to Soufriere Bay’s gentle current. Underwater wonders are visible from 20 feet below the surface right down to a 1,500-foot maximum depth. An underwater wall extending its entire length gives the site its name.

Where to stay: Cabrits Resort & Spa Kempinski is the smartest place to stay on the island. All of the classic hallmarks are here—a full service spa, four swimming pools—but it’s the lush grounds, which incorporate Cabrits National Park, that make this spot memorable.

Grenada

Best island for: natural beauty

Grenada’s 133 archipelagic square miles are laced with waterfalls, hot springs and tropical rainforests across three main islands: Grenada, Petit Martinique, and Carriacou. Ringed by 45 white- and nine black-sand beaches, the hilly isles are dotted with acres of fruit and spice trees.

One-ninth of Grenada’s land mass is dedicated to national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, best seen on a guided hike of Grand Etang Forest Reserve. Sister Island Carriacou is a worthy day trip too, especially for the top-shelf diving and snorkeling.

Where to stay: Few places capture Grenada's understated magic like the Silversands Grenada resort , found at the sleepy end of the two-mile Grand Anse Beach. The biggest draw here is the 330-foot infinity pool, said to be the longest in the Caribbean, which stretches from the hotel’s entrance all the way to the sea.

Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico

Best island for: history and culture

There’s a distinct energy to Puerto Rico , one that draws upon a fascinating blend of Hispanic, African, American, and Caribbean culture and history. To see it start in colonial San Juan , the second oldest European-founded city in the Americas. Head to the old town where cobblestone streets are lined with colorful Spanish buildings housing trendy bars, boutique shopping and all-night entertainment.

Hundreds of thousands of Africans arrived in Puerto Rico via forced migration in the colonial era. Their contributions to the island’s culture, art, music and cuisine live on today in Loiza, home to Puerto Rico’s largest Black population. You can witness it via the artwork on display at Samuel Lind Studio, or at the Don Rafael Cepeda School of Bomba and Plena which puts on traditional music and dance workshops.

Where to stay: Caribe Hilton is within walking distance of historic Old San Juan and the Condado entertainment district. Designed in tropical modernist style by legendary Puerto Rican firm Toro Ferrer, the grounds incorporate 17 acres of tropical landscaping as well as nine restaurants and an oceanfront pool complex. See our edit of the best hotels in Puerto Rico for more.

St. Kitts and Nevis

St. Kitts and Nevis

Best island for: visiting two islands in one trip

Lush natural beauty and historic attractions are the hallmarks of this twin-island nation. Most travelers visit both islands, as smaller Nevis is a breezy 20-minute ferry ride from larger St. Kitts. Sightseeing on St. Kitts is best done via the scenic train—the only working railway in the Caribbean—which circumnavigates the island on routes that once transported plantation sugar cane. Another highlight is the Brimstone Hill fortress, built of hand-chiseled stones by enslaved Kittitians and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stand among the fort’s ramparts and cannon while taking in panoramic views of neighboring Saba, Statia, St. Maarten, and St. Barths .

Tiny Nevis’ resplendent landscape is overlooked by 3,232-foot high Nevis Peak, located at its center and visible from virtually every point on the island. Mountainside hiking and ATV tours uncover haunting ruins of colonial-era plantations and sugar mills.

Where to stay: Hide away in one of the traditional West Indian–inspired cottages at Belle Mont Farm . As the name suggests, dining here is farm-to-table, serving up freshly foraged organic fruit and vegetables plus seafood plucked straight out of the ocean.

30 perfect thanksgiving vacations.

Trade holiday headaches for a more relaxing break.

Escape the holiday hoopla, and be grateful for a far-from-home getaway.

Ah, Thanksgiving. Pumpkin pie, roasted turkey, football games and time with friends and family are top draws for celebrating the time-honored holiday at home. But if the prospect of navigating crowded airport terminals and bumper-to-bumper traffic to spend time with extended family and engaging in contentious political discussions (or cooking the bird and all the trimmings) has you pining for an alternative escape, fret not. With some help from seasoned travel pros, we've pinpointed unexpected places to spend a stress-free Thanksgiving. So ditch the turkey, gravy and green bean casserole for a sunny locale, urban retreat or snowy getaway over the long weekend.

St. Stephen's Basilica in Budapest, Hungary.

Budapest, Hungary

For deal-chasers, "Europe is the place to go over Thanksgiving," says Wendy Perrin, founder and editor of travel-planning site WendyPerrin.com. Autumn marks a low season, yet the weather is still comfortable and rates are relatively less expensive compared to spring and summer. And in Budapest , you can admire striking architecture, soak in heated thermal baths and embrace European charm and Hungarian culinary specialties at charming cafes around Castle Hill. Best of all, in Budapest, you can start your holiday shopping early at brightly lit Christmas markets. Pick up a few gifts and admire the dazzling light displays at the Christmas Fair at Basilica (beginning on Black Friday), and the Christmas Market on Vorosmarty Square.

Long exposure of cars driving down Main St. in Park City, Utah.

Park City, Utah

If you're longing for a winter wonderland, consider forgoing apple pie this Thanksgiving for some quality time on the slopes and around a roaring fire in Park City's snow-globe-like setting. Over the holiday weekend, there are plenty of festive, kid-friendly traditions at top resorts in the area, from cookie decorating to tree-lighting ceremonies. And with ski season beginning on Wednesday, Nov. 22, powder seekers can tackle well-groomed trails at Park City Mountain Resort before checking out the charming shops and eateries in Canyons Village and strolling along Main Street. Thrill-seekers can also enjoy exhilarating bends and curves on a toboggan-style bobsled ride at Utah Olympic Park.

Sunset on palm fringed beach, Costa Rica

Itching for a warm-weather escape? If you're looking for a mix of adventure and relaxation – from wildlife-viewing to an adrenaline-pumping zip line above Monteverde's Cloud Rainforest to lounging in a hammock beneath swaying palms – Costa Rica is an ideal escape. While you'll be visiting at the tail end of rainy season, you can take advantage of a few off-season benefits. Aside from fewer tourist crowds and verdant landscapes, you can also secure discounted lodging rates and flights. Plus, you can swap stuffing and mashed potatoes for fresh fruit and morning yoga sessions, and embrace Costa Rica's "pura vida" (pure life) philosophy with wellness-minded activities and nutritious cuisine.

Dunn's River Fall, in Ocho Rios Jamaica, Waterfall

Whether you want to lounge on golden sands, hike along the Blue Mountains or climb the legendary Dunn's River Falls waterfall, there are plenty of ways to embrace Jamaica's picturesque Caribbean scenery and laid-back vibes. "Hurricane season officially ends November 30, so traveling on or before Thanksgiving means you'll be catching the final low rates of the Caribbean's shoulder season before the snowbirds arrive," says Lindsey Olander, editor at travel site Jetsetter.com. Even better, in November and December, temperatures hover in the 70s and mid-80s, and you can secure discounted resort rates. "For sun-seekers, I'd recommend Jamaica in November, which was (thankfully) spared from recent hurricanes," Olander adds.

Old Quebec City at dawn.

Quebec City

If you can't make it to France this fall, you can still enjoy a European-inspired setting and plenty of charm in Quebec City , Perrin says. Francophiles and foodies alike can delight in French-inspired gastronomy at top dining institutions. Plus, the centuries-old structures and quaint cobblestone streets and bistros add to the city's enchanting atmosphere. History buffs can check out Battlefields Park, the Citadel and the Notre-Dame Basilica, while nature lovers can stroll along the serene Terrasse Dufferin. And although temperatures dip into the 30s and 50s at this time of year, you can still admire brilliant maple trees and seize upon shoulder-season discounts.

best caribbean island to visit during thanksgiving

Asheville, North Carolina

While Asheville may conjure images of microbreweries and the awe-inspiring Blue Ridge Parkway, there's much more to experience over Thanksgiving. Along with temperatures hovering in the mid-50s and 70s, "you've got the fall foliage," Perrin says, with peak leaf-peeping opportunities in early November. Plus, there's the 8,000-acre, decked-out Biltmore Estate, which has a unique history and elaborate holiday displays. Perrin suggests checking out the dazzling wreaths, lights and decorated evergreens at the annual Christmas at Biltmore Daytime Celebration. What's more, you can check out the intricate winning entries from a national gingerbread competition at the Omni Grove Park Inn, Perrin adds.

Beautiful sunrise over Amsterdam, The Netherlands, with flowers and bicycles on the bridge in spring.

For a winning mix of culture, history and modern allures, set your sights on Amsterdam for the holiday weekend. You can brush up on the past at the Leiden American Pilgrim Museum Foundation in Leiden, Holland, located near the Dutch capital. After getting a history lesson, visit world-class museums throughout Amsterdam, from the Van Gogh Museum to the Anne Frank House. If you don't mind chilly temperatures in the 40s, November also marks an enticing time to visit, given reduced crowds and plenty of flight and accommodation deals. Make the most of your trip by enjoying a canal-lined stroll and carving out some time to unwind in Vondelpark.

best caribbean island to visit during thanksgiving

The Big Island, Hawaii

"Hawaii is usually a really great deal in the fall," Perrin says. You can spend your days trekking through tropical rainforests, lounging on black sands at Punaluu Beach, exploring state parks and hiking captivating volcanoes. Catching sight of the fiery lava at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is a must, as is checking out a quintessential luau, snorkeling and admiring the views from Mauna Kea. With daytime temperatures in the high 60s to low 80s and low-priced accommodations (including resorts with kid-friendly amenities), November marks an ideal time to visit. Even better, you can feast on traditional Thanksgiving culinary offerings at resorts throughout the island.

Whistler ski resort.

Whistler, Canada

Whether you want to enjoy the early ski season – along with enticing gear and accommodation deals as well as faster lift lines – or you're looking to embrace Whistler 's still-pleasant temperatures in the 40s and 50s, you won't mind forgoing turkey for days on the slopes. The official ski season kicks off Nov. 23, and since Thanksgiving in Canada takes place in October, you won't have to worry about battling heavy crowds. Check out the charming pedestrian-only Village Stroll in Whistler Village, and pop into galleries, shops and restaurants to charge up for more adventurous cold-weather activities. When you're ready to get your heart racing, enjoy snowboarding, skiing, snowshoeing and other active pursuits.

Houses of Arlington Row in the village of Bibury, England

The Cotswolds, England

"The Cotswolds region in south-central England is beautiful any time of year, but arguably it's most picturesque in the fall, when the ivy blanketing its tiny towns and cottages turns brilliant red and yellow hues, and residents begin throwing logs in their stone fireplaces," Olander says. You won't miss home as you explore the area's striking walking trails, like the 102-mile long Cotswold Way National Trail, which weaves past beautiful hills, quaint villages and storied churches. "Restaurants here may not serve your family’s traditional Thanksgiving spread, but their home-cooked, often farm-to-table dishes hit the spot," Olander adds. What's more, there are plenty of affordable inns to pick from, making it easy to keep your budget intact.

Nauset Lighthouse in Cape Cod-Massachusetts at sunset

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Picture the Cape, and serene sands, clam shacks and shingled cottages likely come to mind. But while the warmer months offer an enticing beach break for East Coasters, the shoulder season offers its own draws: reduced crowds and attractive packages. If you can brave the crisp temperatures, with daytime highs in the 40s and 50s, you can enjoy a historic setting and traditional Thanksgiving meal, Perrin says. The peak foliage season will have wrapped up, but you can embrace peaceful surroundings. Immerse yourself in nature on one of the Cape's scenic trails along the Cape Cod National Seashore before refueling with clam chowder and unwinding in a budget-friendly bed-and-breakfast or inn.

Arizona Canal running through Scottsdale, Arizona.

Scottsdale, Arizona

For a warm-weather holiday break with desert scenery, high-end resorts and postcard-worthy landscapes, consider Scottsdale. You can indulge at a decadent spa (think: prickly pear and honey-infused body treatments), kick back in a poolside cabana or commune with nature and enjoy mountain biking and hiking at the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. For more recreation, check out the nearby Camelback Mountain. After getting your adrenaline fix, refuel with a memorable meal at an acclaimed restaurant such as Virtù or Roaring Fork. Best of all, in late November, you'll avoid summer's scorching triple-digit temperatures and likely land a reasonably priced rate at a top resort before the peak winter season.

Ice cave is in the largest glacier in Europe, Vatnajokull in Iceland.

"A trip to Iceland might not seem so practical in November, but if you don't mind being a bit cold, it's a perfect place to get away," Olander says. The low season ushers in dwindling crowds, discounted accommodation rates and the opportunity to explore Iceland's can't-miss cold-weather attractions, she explains. Highlights include soaking in the otherworldly Blue Lagoon, exploring icy glaciers and bar-hopping in Reykjavik. "And what could be more magical than catching the northern lights?" she adds, emphasizing that the winter months mark an ideal time to catch the natural phenomenon, as the skies are darkest and clearest. For more adventure, join the Golden Circle tour.

Colonial carriage at Williamsburg, Virginia

Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia

Make the pilgrimage to Colonial Williamsburg, and you'll feel like you've stepped back in time, Perrin says. Learn about the country's revolutionary heritage with the "Come, Ye Thankful People Come" event at the Hennage Auditorium, when Cliff Williams and John Turner re-enactors recite Thanksgiving songs and hymns the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. If you have a sweet tooth, don't forget to pick up a pecan, apple, pumpkin, rum cream or apple-cranberry pie at Raleigh Tavern Bakery. For more of a history lesson, make your way to Jamestown to delight in Foods and Feasts of Colonial Virginia – a three-day extravaganza that recounts how traditional Revolution-era meals were prepped and other historical details.

Charleston, South Carolina, USA in the French Quarter.

Charleston, South Carolina

For a fun holiday weekend, flee to Charleston for an old-fashioned, all-American atmosphere, Perrin says. Temperatures hover in the 60s and 70s, ideal conditions for exploring can't-miss attractions and antebellum architecture throughout the city, from the Nathaniel Russell House to Magnolia Plantation & Gardens. Plus, you can delight in a memorable Thanksgiving meal at one of the city's acclaimed restaurants, she adds. When you're not enjoying a Spanish moss-canopied stroll or taking a horse-drawn carriage in the Historic District, you can pop into charming boutiques along King Street. Best of all, there are plenty of holiday happenings, including the annual Holiday Festival of Lights at James Island County Park and the Turkey Day Run & Gobble Wobble 5K.

Potted plants in balcony of building at French Quarter, New Orleans

New Orleans

The Big Easy delivers more than jazz, blues, beignets, Sazeracs and stellar po'boys. You can join the fray in the French Quarter before feasting on a Cajun-inspired turkey day staple: turducken (a turkey stuffed with chicken and duck), typically paired with cornbread and gravy. For more holiday festivities, attend the Bayou Classic Thanksgiving Day Parade on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. And when you need a respite, meander through the Garden District. Already dreaming of a white Christmas? Admire the dazzling displays during the annual Celebration in the Oaks in City Park, when bright lights adorn hundreds of oaks throughout the park, beginning Nov. 24.

Skyscrapers of San Diego skyline with reflections and cloudscape.

Gorgeous weather year-round makes San Diego an alluring beach break at any time, Perrin says, but in autumn, tourist crowds and accommodation rates drop. And while the Southern Californian retreat may be more renowned as a microbrewery mecca and low-key surf town, it's easy to pull off a family-friendly holiday getaway – complete with beachside lounging, hiking at Torrey Pines and exploring Balboa Park – without busting your budget. For those looking to get into the Thanksgiving spirit, there are a variety of turkey trot 5K races and feasts throughout the city. At the famous Hotel del Coronado, for example, you can enjoy a pre-fixe Thanksgiving meal with live music.

The Duomo of Florence at Sunset - Italy

Florence, Italy

With low-season crowds (and prices), Europe's cultural meccas beckon to those looking for a world-class weekend getaway over the holiday, Perrin says. In Florence, you can check out world-renowned art institutions like the Uffizi Gallery without battling swarms of tourists. Plus, you can score tickets to top theater and opera performances. Even better, when you're not admiring iconic art, you can escape to the enchanting hills of Tuscany, leisurely sip distinguished bottles of Chianti and soak in the city's sophisticated restaurant and shopping scenes. And though you can expect chillier temperatures in the 40s and 50s, if you don't mind the crisp weather, you'll be rewarded with off-season hotel rates and shorter attraction lines.

Fountain in Forsyth Park in Savannah, Georgia.

Savannah, Georgia

With antebellum architecture, horse-drawn carriages, Spanish moss-lined streets and historical treasures, Savannah delivers on Southern charm. And in mid-November, you can take advantage of shoulder-season discounts, pleasant temperatures in the 50s to 70s and even a twinkling tree-lighting ceremony followed by the Boat Parade of Lights on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Take in more of the city's genteel charms on Black Friday as you explore the City Market, check out River Street or people-watch in photogenic Forsyth Park in the Historic District. What's more, over the long weekend, you can count on mouthwatering low country cuisine, from shrimp and grits at Cotton & Rye to biscuit buns and scones at Back in the Day Bakery.

Joshua Tree National Park in Palm Springs, California just before sunset.

Joshua Tree National Park, California

If you're itching to embrace the great outdoors over the holiday break, Joshua Tree National Park packs plenty of dry air, desert scenery and spectacular hikes, Perrin says. For postcard-worthy views, make your way to Keys View lookout. Fuss-free, frugal-minded vacationers seeking cost-effective accommodations may consider an Airstream (via Airbnb) at Kate's Lazy Desert near the park entrance, while campers can stake out a spot at one of the 44 sites at Hidden Valley Campground, which offers easy access to top trails. Best of all, the park's striking desert landscapes and two distinct ecosystems – the Colorado and the Mojave – are 140 miles west of Los Angeles. Skip shopping on Black Friday to join a ranger-led program or take a hike.

Santa Barbara, California

Santa Barbara's consistently pleasant temperatures in the mid-50s and upper 60s, reduced nightly room rates and mix of fashionable boutiques and acclaimed restaurants appeal to those craving an escape-it-all getaway far from the holiday stress back home. Grape-seekers can enjoy leisurely wine tastings and gallery-hopping at the Funk Zone, while shoppers stroll along State Street to stock up on holiday presents. When you're not attending a yoga class, you can enjoy strolls along the harbor in the dubbed "American Riviera" before delighting in a farm-to-table meal at an acclaimed dining institution such as Brophy Bros, The Lark or Opal Restaurant & Bar.

Rathaus Vienna

(Getty Images | Moment RF)

Whether you want to explore ornate palaces, catch an opera or peruse an elaborate Christmas market, Austria's cosmopolitan capital is a great choice for the holiday weekend, Perrin says. After all, you won't miss stuffing or Black Friday shopping as you savor roasted chestnuts, seasonal delights and handcrafted goods beneath twinkling lights at the Viennese Christmas Market outside City Hall. A number of Christmas markets and cultural happenings take place throughout Thanksgiving weekend, Perrin adds. The Viennnese Christmas market begins on Nov. 18, and the Christmas Village Belvedere Palace begins on Nov. 24. And while temperatures dip, if you can brave the 30- and 40-degree temperatures, you can score reasonably priced accommodations in November.

Portas do Sol in Lisbon, Portugal.

Lisbon, Portugal

While Lisbon lures travelers with its bargain-friendly rates and affordable attractions year-round, in fall you can embrace thinning crowds and comfortable temperatures lingering in the 50s and 70s through the end of November. Visit Alfalma to admire in the city's elaborate tile-laden sidewalks. Next, make the pilgrimage to postcard-worthy Sintra to admire picturesque villas and palaces along the hilly cobblestone streets. When you're ready to refuel, savor an authentic Portuguese meal followed by a pasteis de nata – a sweet custard pastry and an enticing alternative to pumpkin pie. At the end of the day, retire to one of Lisbon's affordable boutique hotels or take in iconic fado music in the Alfalma district.

Along the cliff walk in Newport, RI, there are some spectacular residential buildings open for the public to enjoy.

Newport, Rhode Island

For an idyllic New England getaway with coastal scenery and fall colors, plan your escape to Newport. While temperatures can dip into the 30s, you can take advantage of thinning tourist crowds and plenty of pampering. At the enchanting Castle Hill Inn, there's an elaborate Thanksgiving spread – complete with littleneck clams, turkey and pie. Plus, with the Thanksgiving Package promotion, you can enjoy a two-night stay, a Thanksgiving feast, breakfast and afternoon tea – along with a half bottle of Cabernet – at a fixed rate. For more activity, check out the shops along Thames Street and take a brisk stroll along the Cliff Walk trail before warming up by a crackling fire at The Chanler.

Art Deco buildings in Miami Beach.

Miami Beach

Celebrate the long weekend with some quality time catching up on R & R by the pool, the beach or at top shopping meccas on a sunny escape to Miami Beach. Thanks to swift recovery efforts following Hurricane Irma, major hotels, resorts, museums, nightlife venues and shops are open for business. Whether you want to check out striking art deco buildings on Ocean Drive, rent a beach chair on South Beach or simply stay put in a cabana at your hotel, there are plenty of ways to unwind and dodge the holiday routine (and countless hours of meal prep). What's more, you can embrace an American feast and celebrate the holiday at acclaimed restaurants without lifting a finger. At StripSteak by Michael Mina at Fontainebleau Miami Beach, for example, you can enjoy holiday staples such as glazed carrots and roasted turkey.

USA, Virginia, Richmond, Cityscape at evening

Richmond, Virginia

With its storied sites, Southern charm and burgeoning culinary scene, Richmond is an enticing Thanksgiving escape for foodies, culture vultures, history lovers and outdoorsy types alike. Along with trendy art- and design-centric hotels like the Quirk Hotel, there are plenty of opportunities to embrace the great outdoors. Cross the James River to Belle Isle for a memorable bike ride or picnic, or enjoy blazing fall colors in Shenandoah National Park (about 90 miles west of Richmond off Interstate 64). And if you opt for a history-filled vacation, get a sense of Richmond's genteel attractions like the Jefferson Hotel and the Valentine Museum. When you're ready to refuel, enjoy traditional Southern cuisine – including fried chicken and biscuits with sausage gravy – at The Roosevelt.

Portland Head lighthouse on the rocky coastline of Maine at sunrise,

Portland, Maine

For a mix of requisite New England charm and history, it's hard to match Portland. You can admire the area's craggy coastlines, Victorian homes and picturesque Portland Head Light before retracing pilgrims' footsteps and heading to Popham Colony, an early American settlement that some believe was formed in 1607, before Plymouth Rock in 1620. Set along the Kennebunk River, approximately 25 miles northeast of Portland, the colony features a boulder with the sign "Popham Rock." For modern allures, base yourself in Portland and retreat to the Press Hotel before enjoying a leisurely meal. The Holy Donut and the Highroller Lobster Co. are a couple of must-visit eateries. Cap off your feast with a pub crawl in the East Bayside neighborhood.

Walking west past the end of Horseshoe Bay in Bermuda the large beach ends and we find amazing rock formations with pockets of pink coral sand as seen in this Kite Aerial view.

Pink-hued sands, world-renowned golf courses and captivating oceanfront scenery offer the perfect antidote to the holiday grind. And while the weather in this mid-Atlantic island will be chillier at this time of year, with daytime temperatures hovering in the 60s and 70s, you'll be rewarded with reduced accommodation rates. Whether you want to explore unspoiled coral reefs, hit the links at Port Royal Golf Course or enjoy leisurely strolls in historic St. George – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – you'll be grateful for some time in the sun rather than making the pilgrimage to your in-laws' house. What's more, you can enjoy duty-free shopping or pampering at the spa before savoring a traditional rum-infused cocktail and delicious Bermudian culinary specialties (sampling traditional fish chowder is a must).

The city of London at sunset.

In November, London draws visitors with its festive Christmas markets, mild daytime temperatures, colorful autumn foliage and enticing flight and hotel deals ahead of the peak winter tourist season. If you're a history buff, you can catch the acclaimed hit musical "Hamilton" at Victoria Palace Theatre throughout November. What's more, culture seekers can explore can't-miss institutions such as the National Gallery, Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace. For more time outdoors, explore lively Borough Market or meander to Notting Hill's Portobello Road Market to pick up vintage gifts and classic English antiques. For more world-class shopping, head to Oxford Street. And if you're feeling nostalgic for a traditional Thanksgiving feast, you'll find quintessential American trimmings like pumpkin pie and roasted turkey at top restaurants throughout the city.

Annapolis, Maryland

Annapolis, Maryland

With striking coastal scenery along the Chesapeake Bay, delicious blue crabs and crisp autumn air, Annapolis offers a refreshing change of scenery. Admire the colonial architecture and cobblestone streets in Historic Annapolis before grabbing a bite at one of the area's fine dining establishments (Cantler's Riverside Inn, O'Learys Seafood Restaurant and Chick & Ruth's Delly are longstanding crowd-pleasers). And on Black Friday, after you stroll along the city's charming brick streets, peruse the boutique shops and galleries along Main Street in Historic Annapolis to pick up a few holiday gifts. Afterward, visit Dock Street in Ego Alley to people-watch on a bench, grab a bite to eat and admire the sailboats bobbing in the water.

7 Caribbean Islands With Rich Holiday Traditions To Visit This Winter

Gingerbread men and nativity scenes, Christmas trees and eggnog, caroling, turkey dinner, and the words Behave, Santa’s watching : These things mean Christmas to most. But in the islands of the Caribbean, it goes more like this: pasteles and Magi, century plants and spiked sorrel, masquerades, Jumbie Table, and Be good or John Canoe gwanna getchu .

You’ll find in the Caribbean many of the same traditions that represent the universal Christmas sentiment: A spirit of sharing, an overindulgence in good food and spirits, a gravitation toward family and friends, and a return to religious and cultural roots.

But from there, the islands have taken Christmas and made it their own, with long-running festivals and family customs distilled from influences as diverse as African fertility rites and Scandinavian ghost tales. With their promise of deliverance from snow and chill, the islands’ definition of a White Christmas has more to do with sand beaches and a warm welcome to share in vibrant celebrations.

Over my 40 years of researching Caribbean travel, I have accepted hosted visits to the islands. All opinions expressed are my own.

Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián

1. Puerto Rico

The prize for the longest and most fervent Caribbean Christmas season goes to Puerto Rico . Islanders begin the day after Thanksgiving and don’t give out until February. The celebration climaxes with the Feast of the Three Kings, or the Epiphany, on January 6, and on San Sebastian Day, January 20.

In Puerto Rico, the three wise men deliver presents to children, as they once bore gifts for Christ. On the eve of Three Kings Day, youngsters place water and grass under their beds for the Magi’s weary horses. In return, the wise men leave toys. For more than 135 years, the town of Juana Díaz has celebrated a festival and parade where over 25,000 people gather for the occasion.

In old Puerto Rico, the family would begin in November preparing holiday dishes for weeks to come. Making pasteles (pork, raisin, and olive enchiladas wrapped in plantains) required efforts of the entire family. And no family dared be caught without pasteles. For shortly after Thanksgiving, asaltos (assailants) began arriving on doorsteps with demands for pasteles and liquid refreshments in exchange for their musical equivalent of “carols,” known as parrandas .

Today, most Puerto Ricans, especially those in the capital city of San Juan, buy their pasteles rather than make them en familia . But the asalto tradition withstands time’s assault on the old ways. Every weekend during the pre-Christmas season, a disguised band of friends — armed with cuatros (small guitars) and guiros (corrugated gourds) — descend upon neighbors with songs in their throats and growls in their stomachs. Families are forced to surrender all coquitos (coconut-rum eggnog) and goodies, then join the musical group on their merry way into the wee hours of the morning.

Bahamian Junkanoo: a holiday tradition

You can sum up the holidays in the Bahamas with one word: Junkanoo .

Haunting rhythms thump softly on goatskin drums. Whistles scream shrilly and color explodes in a combustion of feathers, sequins, and streamers. Nassau’s big event on Boxing Day, the day after Christmas, leads the Junkanoo street parade tradition. But throughout the islands of the Bahamas, it translates as a cavalcade of costumed pageantry.

Through the years, the festival has evolved from a ragtag celebration of a slave’s day off, to a British-influenced mummers show, to an instrument of intimidation and revolt, to an underground tradition denounced as vulgar, and finally today’s carnival extravaganza. Its name comes from a folk character known as John Canoe, something of a boogeyman back in the early days.

Today, massive local bands with names like The Valley Boys, Prodigal Sons, and Saxons compete. They dress in bright fringes of crepe paper and sequins layered onto cloth, gigantic cardboard, or wooden headdresses and shoulder frames. The j’ouvert (opening) party begins before daybreak on Boxing Day and continues in a burst of self-perpetuating energy.

White Christmas in the Caribbean

In Jamaica and other British-influenced islands, sorrel is always mentioned in the same breath as Christmas, and can usually be detected on the breath of islanders throughout the holiday season. Because its hibiscus plant ripens in-season to produce a Christmas-red liquid, sorrel is the typical drink of Caribbean yule-tiders. Served fermented or unfermented, it is rather bland until doctored with Caribbean spices and, of course, the proper spirit of island Christmas — rum.

Throughout the season, Jamaicans share their sorrel, chocolate tea, and other holiday goodies with visitors. They listen to reggae bands playing both traditional and folk songs at beach bonfires, hotels, and on the street. Decorations from snowmen made of sand to Christmas trees decked out in Jamaican colors add in some extra cheer.

On Christmas Day, visitors can experience a traditional Jamaican Christmas dinner of holiday staples including ham shoulder, gungo peas with rice, curried goat, and fruit cake soaked in rum for dessert.

Like the Bahamas, the celebration continues with a Junkanoo street parade on Boxing Day, but with more of an old-time vibe than a glitzy one. Through the streets of every town and village, islanders dress in extravagant costumes, highlighting longtime traditional characters such as Belly Woman, Horse Head, and Pitchy Patchy.

Pro Tip: Christmas Eve celebrations include the traditional Grand Market, where vendors set up shop in town squares across the island. All are invited to join the community in the bountiful shopping experience.

Aruba's holiday lights

In proximity to Venezuela, Aruba shares some of the Latino traditions found in Puerto Rico, blended with American observances and purely-Aruban merrymaking. Special holiday foods, for instance, mirror Puerto Rico’s menu. Plantain-based ayacas are the Aruban version of pasteles. Ponche cream stands in for coquito, minus the coconut but with a special blend of spices. Arubans make their own recipes at home, but visitors can easily find ponche cream for sale throughout the island, which lights up with decorations from the streets of Oranjestad to the roads and resorts island-wide.

Some resorts design unique activities for holiday guests — from an elves meet-and-greet at the Ritz-Carlton Aruba and holiday cupcake and cookie decorating at the Hyatt Regency Aruba Resort , to Santa’s arrival by jet ski at the Hilton Aruba Caribbean Resort and chocolate truffle and rum tastings at the Aruba Marriott Resort .

To welcome in the new year, the Marriott hosts a celebratory feast leading up to a fireworks display at midnight. Other resorts contribute to lighting up the New Year’s Eve sky with fireworks (or klapchi in the local Papiamento dialect) and families, too, add to the booming festivities.

Puerto Rico’s asalto Christmas tradition translates to pre-New Year’s dande groups in Aruba, where merry bands of five to six travel to the homes of loved ones on New Year’s Eve, wishing them success and happiness in the coming year through song. The bands consist of a vocalist and musicians playing instruments such as the traditional tambu drum.

Pro Tip: Visitors can join in on the fun at the annual Dande Festival, which takes place just before the new year.

Curacao's capital of Willemstad lights up for the holidays.

5. Curacao And Bonaire

As part of the Dutch ABC islands with Aruba and Bonaire, Curacao shares many of the same traditions. Its rum-spiked ponche cream gets a pistachio infusion and December 5 is a red-letter day on the holiday calendar. That’s when Sinterklaas — the Dutch version of Old St. Nick dressed in a long white beard, red robe, and tall bishop’s miter — arrives in St. Anna Bay on a tugboat. He throws candy and goodies to kids lined up on shore.

Bonaire sticks to old traditions with caroling groups similar to Puerto Rico and the Fiesta di Bari, named after the traditional sheepskin drum that keeps the holiday beat. Both musical traditions perform throughout the season at local bars and special events.

New Year’s customs range from Curacao’s house-cleaning rituals, which include cleansing bad spirits and ensuring future good luck with incense smudging; to Bonaire’s Maskarada , a group of musicians and masked characters who perform through the streets in a 25-year tradition. Revelers begin at the home of the lieutenant governor, performing skits by miming and dancing a storyline, before moving on to their next performance.

Carnival elements at the Crucian Christmas Festival

6. St. Croix

U.s. virgin islands.

In the U.S. Virgin Islands, islanders sip guavaberry rum beneath painted century trees. Celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, at St. Croix’s Christmas festival from December 11–January 7, Spanish guiros accompany American banjos and Caribbean steel drums to produce holiday music uniquely Crucian. Highlights include pageants, a carnival village, a food fair, a j’ouvert, and kids and adult parades. Quelbe (the official music of the USVI) lyrics sweeten tunes with island flavor: “Mama bake your johnny cake, Christmas a’comin’” and “Good mawnin’, good mawnin’, I come fo’ de guavaberry.”

Crucians relish another pan-Caribbean holiday sweet of English contribution known as Christmas cake. Cooks begin its preparation months in advance, chopping up fresh native fruit to soak in rum.

Pro Tip: Crucians also love their coquito holiday tipple. Americans can take home 5 liters of alcohol duty-free if 1 liter is produced in the USVI and you’re 21 years of age.

7. Montserrat

Not as renowned as some of the bigger islands, but equally steeped in tradition and flavor, is the Christmas celebration on the tiny isle of Montserrat . Here, where masquerades, steel drum bands, and street “jump-up” dancing prevail throughout December, the household Jumbie Table remains the true showcase of holiday heritage.

Jumbie means “ghost” in Caribbean dialect. Montserratians, although strongly Irish-influenced, share the Scandinavian belief that ancestral spirits return at Christmas to join in festivities. A Christmas Eve table is thereby set to share with them, including traditional specialties and the island’s unique white rum ginger wine.

Pro Tip: For visitors, mid-December marks the opening of Street Jam at Festival City. Through New Year’s Eve, days are packed with musical shows, calypso contests, and costume competitions for the titles of Miss Festival Queen and Calypso King.

Which Caribbean Island Should You Visit?

Each Caribbean island has its own draw, like Anguilla’s long white beaches.

The resurgence of travel to the Caribbean is hardly surprising. Despite all the shake-ups in tourism around the globe, the region’s sunny skies, turquoise waters, magnificent natural landscapes, engaging culture, cuisine, and historic sites remain intact and alluring.

Combine these elements with the Caribbean’s extensive air connections to U.S. gateways and the health and safety framework adopted across this tourism-reliant region, and it’s clear that Caribbean destinations will continue to top getaway wish lists.

From families seeking a cost-effective getaway to couples in search of the ultimate romantic getaway, here are the best Caribbean islands to visit based on an array of interests.

Beaches: Anguilla

Anguilla’s greatest treasure may be its magnificent beaches. Virtually all of the 33 found across Cove Bay, Maundays Bay, Rendezvous Bay, and Shoal Bay feature long coastlines, powdery white sands, and deep blue waters. The island’s small-scale character means the beaches are uniformly uncrowded.

Visitors can even take a powerboat trip from Road Bay in the Sandy Ground district to Sandy Island , a small sliver of white-sand beach eight minutes from the shore. The exclusive private island is ideal for an afternoon of easy relaxation sampling barbecue and the tasty local rum punch.

Premium resorts and gourmet dining are standard fare on this British overseas territory in the Caribbean’s Leeward Islands. The big local news is the November debut of the Aurora Anguilla Resort & Golf Club , a beachside luxury resort located on the grounds of the highly regarded former CuisinArt property.

The exclusive new resort delivers three suite categories, a collection of villas offering generous outdoor spaces, and a private jet fleet dedicated for guests’ exclusive use. Boutique property Frangipani Beach Resort and the Four Seasons Resort & Residences both reopened in November. All three are positioned along lengthy stretches of white-sand beachfront with panoramic Caribbean Sea views.

Luxury: Nevis

Encompassing a scant 36 square miles, Nevis offers travelers a fast-disappearing Caribbean experience with no tall buildings, crowds, warehouse stores, or chain restaurants. Its easygoing charm belies an outstanding collection of luxury resorts and high-end dining venues.

A singularly verdant island even by Caribbean standards, Nevis’s green hills surround 3,232 foot-high Nevis Peak at its center. Ruins of colonial-era sugar plantations dot the hillsides, and visitors can explore the landscapes and take in panoramic island views via hiking and ATV excursions.

Luxury resorts are diverse and plentiful here. The 350-acre beachfront Four Seasons Resort Nevis, the island’s largest property, reopened in November following a multi-year, multi-phased enhancement.

The resort features redesigned suites, more than 50 private vacation rental homes, three infinity-edge pools, a Robert Trent Jones II golf course, and a nine-court tennis facility. There are unobstructed Caribbean sunset views at the renovated Mango gourmet restaurant and an extensive collection of the Caribbean’s signature spirit at the Crowned Monkey rum bar.

Built on the site of a 300-year-old sugar plantation, Montpelier Plantation & Beach embraces a laid-back chic with gardens and a private beach equipped with hammocks, cabanas, and a beach bar. The resort’s Mill Privee restaurant serves imaginative, intricate takes on contemporary Caribbean cuisine.

Boutique luxury resort Golden Rock —which has just 11 spacious guest rooms—sits on 100 acres along the slopes of Nevis Peak, amid tropical gardens with views of nearby Antigua and Montserrat.

Locals and visitors alike can enjoy fine seaside seaside at Gin Trap restaurant , but Nevis is also home to casual beach bars, headlined by Sunshine’s Beach Bar and Grill , a stroll across Pinney’s Beach from the Four Seasons.

Water activities—like catamaran sailing, fishing, and diving excursions—are a great way to experience the British Virgin Islands.

Ocean adventure: British Virgin Islands

The British Virgin Islands are a collection of 50-plus island s with diverse landscapes, serene beaches , and green hillsides. The main four are Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke, and visitors and residents can journey among them via an extensive system of local ferries.

Not surprisingly, water sports are extremely popular here . Travelers can check the BVI Tourist Board website for links to local operators that lead deep-sea fishing, paddleboarding, snorkeling, and diving excursions. Full- and half-day private boat charters are popular too: Groups traveling on one of Dream Yacht Charter ’s catamarans are treated to air-conditioned cabins with a staff including a captain, chef, and first mate.

The BVI are also home to unique marine sites, most notably the Baths National Park on Virgin Gorda’s north shore. The Baths’ massive granite boulders form sheltered beachfront pools and crevices perfect for exploring, wading, and creating infinite Instagram posts.

Food Fete, the BVI’s premier culinary celebration, returns this year with in-person events across the islands throughout November and December. A highlight will be the Anegada Lobster Festival November 26–28, which includes an island-wide scavenger hunt and tastings focused on Anegada’s spiny lobster, the island’s culinary specialty.

Culture: Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico’s unique heritage combines influences from the Indigenous Taino culture, the island’s centuries as a Spanish colony, and its long stretch as a key port in the transatlantic African slave trade, which profoundly impacted the island’s culture.

“The island’s African legacy manifests itself in all aspects of daily life,” says Dr. María Elba Torres Muñoz, director of the Instituto Interdisciplinario y Multicultural, General Studies Faculty at the University of Puerto Rico. “It is felt and lived in their songs, in the dance, their food, their bodies, their way of speaking, their vocabulary, the way of loving.”

Contemporary visitors can trace Puerto Rico’s African influences through creations on view in seminal collections at the Museo de Arte de Ponce , Museo de las Américas , and Museo de Historia de Caguas , or at the Samuel Lind Studio in San Juan’s colonial district. They can also taste it in dishes such as mofongo, bacalaitos, and pasteles that are based on African cuisine. Try authentic crab-based Puerto Rican cuisine at El Burén de Lula in Loiza, home to Puerto Rico’s largest Black population, a legacy of its 16th-century settlement by Yoruba people from the West African countries of Nigeria, Benin, and Togo.

Puerto Rico’s unique heritage can be seen across the island in its art and architecture.

Romance: St. Lucia

Lush natural beauty, soaring mountain landscapes highlighted by the UNESCO World Heritage Pitons , and multi-hued sunsets make St. Lucia a paradise for couples and an ideal Caribbean romance destination.

The scenery creates a dreamy backdrop for St. Lucia activities that bring lovers together: Picture detoxifying mud baths and relaxing hot-bath treatments at the volcanic Sulfur Springs in Soufrière and strolls through the Botanical Gardens’ flowery canopy. Couples can also opt for more adrenaline-inducing pursuits, from helicopter tours to zipline and horseback excursions.

There’s plenty of romance in accommodations too. The suites at hilltop luxury resorts Anse Chastanet and Ladera were built with fourth “open” walls that overlook the Pitons.

Destination spa resort BodyHoliday reopened in October with programs that couples will appreciate, including (if they need some separate “me” time) a personalized Wellness Rehabilitation that incorporates relaxation techniques, fitness programming, holistic nutrition, and spa treatments. Beachfront sister property Rendezvous has also reopened with a focus on amenities and services designed to help couples to “reinvigorate” their relationships, including intimate, private beachfront dinners with chef-designed menus and “date nights” with champagne service and live entertainment. Couples planning destination weddings will find buy-out options here so they can create an on-property “bridal bubble.”

Family-friendly: Dominican Republic

Infinite stretches of coconut-palm-lined, white-sand beaches, and upscale resorts are de rigueur in the Dominican Republic’s Punta Cana district, the Caribbean’s all-inclusive resort kingdom and an easy win for families. Dozens of U.S. flights connect daily with the Punta Cana International Airport, and although the phrase “all-inclusive” can raise some travelers’ eyebrows, the combination of accommodations, cuisine, amenities, facilities, and activities makes this type of resort a hassle-free option, especially for family trips. You don’t need to be stuck on campus the whole time though; resorts’ tour desks can arrange off-property excursions, such as coastal catamaran tours.

Properties range from family-themed to adults-only and include branded properties familiar to sun-and-fun-seeking U.S. travelers.

Nickelodeon Punta Cana is a haven for families with its seven flexible accommodation categories, including two- and three-bedroom “super villas” measuring 2,200 square feet. Kids (and their parents) can cool off at the Aqua Nick water park. Plaza Orange features live entertainment and family-friendly movie premieres, while kids can meet their favorite Nickelodeon characters throughout the day at Character Central.

The “ecochic” Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda is at the other end of the design spectrum. Located on pristine Playa Esmeralda, a barely touched coastal region surrounded by tropical forest, the property emphasizes sustainability across four distinct boutique “villages,” each offering customized environments, activities, and accommodations. It’s a family-friendly option, thanks to kid-focused amenities, but it also caters to parents who may need the occasional break at one of its adults-only areas.

For grown-ups looking to ditch the kids entirely, the D.R. has plenty of adults-only properties, including TRS Cap Cana Hotel , where they’ll find the Zentropia Palladium Spa & Wellness Centre, an Ibizan-style beach club, and à la carte eateries serving Argentinian and Japanese fare. Or they can check into Breathless Punta Cana and burn off a few calories under tall palms with beachside fitness classes, or pump up the jam at the resort’s swim-up bar and multi-level Freestyle Pool, featuring live DJ music and curated cocktails.

Bonus: Belize for Adventure

While Belize is not an island, its prime coastal location on the Caribbean Sea makes it feel like one. What’s more, the temperate weather, many direct flights from the U.S., and the fact that the country’s official language is English, all make Belize a great—and often overlooked—warm-weather vacation option. The country is a wonderland of natural attractions, with extensive cave systems, lush jungles, and world-class dive sites. Combined with diverse cultures and historic treasures, Belize stands at the forefront of Caribbean adventure destinations.

Belize is a nexus for Maya, Caribbean, Garifuna, and even Mennonite cultures. English is the official language, although Belizean Creole is the most widely spoken.

The Maya civilization flourished in the region from 1500 B.C.E. through 1200 C.E., leaving behind archaeological sites now open to visitors. Several are located within Belize’s caves, which are accessible via guided tours that can range from easy walks to challenging excursions that require spelunkers to squeeze, crawl, climb, rappel, and swim through different sections.

Cave’s Branch Adventure and Jungle Lodge offers adventure-themed stays in the Belizean rain forest. Travelers can select their degree of exposure to nature, with “tree house” accommodations located 200 feet above the Caves Branch valley or jungle bungalows and cabanas located deep within the rain forest and equipped with separate air-conditioned and screened-in rooms, plus outdoor showers.

5 best Caribbean destinations to celebrate Christmas this year

Sep 28, 2022 • 4 min read

best caribbean island to visit during thanksgiving

Escaping to the Caribbean for Christmas and swapping snow for sun, sand and tropical drinks sounds like a great way to bring some joy to the holiday season.

December weather in the Caribbean is particularly dry, with a “Christmas breeze” that locals wait for all year. From proximity and nonstop flights to affordable lodging, unique cultural festivities and an ideal party/relaxation balance, here are five Caribbean destinations to spend Christmas this year.

A drawing of a Christmas tree is etched in the sand next to a beach

1. Jamaica: fresh sorrel, fruit cake and reggae fests

The best part of Christmas in  Jamaica  is the food. The markets are livelier than ever with the season's favorite fruit – sorrel – in high demand. Feast on seasonal specialties like curried goat or ham with rice and beans, fruit cake and sorrel juice made with a hint of ginger and rum.

Top 15 beaches in Jamaica

2. Dominican Republic: waterfalls, free concerts and nightlife

The season is particularly festive in the Dominican Republic , where Christmas holidays are celebrated through music, shopping and food. In Santo Domingo , shopping malls are beautifully decorated and host indoor arts and crafts markets featuring locally made products.

In the Zona Colonial, you’ll find live music daily, with free concerts beside Plaza Espana ’s giant Christmas tree every weekend evening.

In Puerto Plata , beaches and resorts are less crowded and outdoor adventures are plentiful. Hike to waterfalls in the countryside, tour a chocolate factory and witness the Christmas Eve tradition of pig roasting overnight. Dancing merengue and bachata until sunrise is also tradition so head to a few local bars or nightclubs for a little practice.

Sample Christmas dishes on or off your resort — pasteles en hoja are like tamales, made with plantain dough, stuffed and wrapped in a green plantain leaf. And don't forget to sample Dominican ponche.

A wooden pier extends into a shallow beach from the shore. Palm trees dot the shoreline and cover a beach house.

3. Belize: rainforests, culture and cayes

Christmas in Belize is a chance to experience some of its unique cultural events, while island hopping and hiking in rainforests. Lodging also remains reasonably priced, as more tourists visit in January and February.

Stay at a riverside lodge in Burrell Boom or in Crooked Tree Village , outside Belize City , for a traditional Kriol Christmas dinner of turkey with cranberry jelly, rice and beans, ham, potato salad, black cake and rum popo. On Boxing Day, head to the Burrell Boom horse races or to the Brukdong Bram celebration in Gales Point.

In Dangriga , Christmastime draws junkanu and charikanari dancers to the streets. Charikanari is a hunting dance; participants wear headdresses resembling a cow’s head, with real horns, and hunt a  “two foot” cow, dancing and teasing the crowds in the street.

Afterwards, hop to affordable Tobacco Caye for snorkeling and relaxation along Belize’s Barrier Reef.

4. The Bahamas: Junkanoo, shopping and seclusion

The Bahamas’ annual Christmas Junkanoo Festival on Boxing Day is one of the best reasons to visit. The colorful parade in Nassau , the largest of all on the archipelago, welcomes everyone on the islands to dress up and dance in the streets.

Christmas shopping attracts arts-and-crafts vendors from around the islands to Nassau. Visit Festival Place at Prince George Wharf for locally made items. Port Lucaya Market on Grand Bahama also just reopened. When you’re ready to escape the crowds, hop over to Eleuthera, Bimini or any of the Out Islands except for the Abacos, which remain closed after Hurricane Dorian.

Add proximity to the US, numerous nonstop flights, plus the chance to contribute to The Bahamas’ recovering tourism industry and Christmas in the Bahamas is a no brainer.

5. Puerto Rico: parties, old world charm and wild beaches

For either parties or seclusion at an affordable price, head to Puerto Rico . It’s an easy flight from the US, with no passport required for US citizens.

Overnight in Old San Juan explore its charming streets for shopping, history and food  and dance away to live salsa or bomba.

Vieques is an easy hop on the ferry from Fajardo; arrive early to ensure availability. You should also book your rooms and car rentals in advance. Continue the holiday party vibe on the busier side of Vieques in Esmeralda, or escape into the hills near wild black sand beaches.

This glamorous Caribbean destination combines home comforts with exotic extravagance. Expect to find your local church and cricket green visited by some audacious monkeys. As with all of the Caribbean jewels, Barbados has no shortage of incredible beaches. The west coast’s waters are calm for a relaxing dip as the water laps the shore, whereas the surf is usually up in the south if you want to catch some waves. Head inland for plantation houses botanic gardens and neverending fields of sugarcane. The Bajans are a friendly, dynamic bunch who bustle around the island making it as welcoming as the winter sun.

View of black sand beach on St Kitts

St. Kitts is certainly a sweet choice with an enormous quantity of sugarcane plantations. The island has been adding a little sweetness to our treats for over 350 years and has one of the longest histories in the Caribbean. Travel the St Kitts Railway along a narrow gauge previously used for transporting sugarcane for a scenic tour around the island. Or hike up Mount Liamuiga, a 3792 dormant stratovolcano, and admire the luscious green hills from atop. For those conscious about their carbon footprint, you’ll be pleased to hear that St Kitts is a leader for ecotourism and has many projects aimed at conserving biodiversity and adapting to climate change.

St. Vincent and The Grenadines

The Grenadines Islands Caribbean Island Chain

The Grenadines are actually an archipelago in themselves comprising of 32 islands and cays, St Vincent being the largest. The area offers a quieter pace of life than some of the larger islands and a taste of the real Caribbean. Brought to fame by The Pirates of The Caribbean for their diverse landscapes of towering volcanoes, secluded coves and glistening sands, there is definitely treasure to be found. With so many glorious islands to choose from, why not charter a boat and island hop until you find your favorite. All of the Grenadines promise the piece of private winter sun you need to get you through the rest of the winter.

November in the Caribbean: Weather, What to Pack, and What to See

best caribbean island to visit during thanksgiving

Christian Wheatley / Getty Images

Although the Caribbean has pretty much become a year-round tourist and romantic destination, the peak winter travel season doesn't start until December. November is still considered the shoulder season when you can find killer airfares and great deals on accommodations. Or if you've ever wanted to try a Caribbean cruise , several cruise lines offer special promotions to entice would-be travelers during the tourist low season.

Even though the dry season across the region is from December to April, you'll pay a lot less to travel in November and the weather overall is still perfect for sitting out at the beach. However, some islands get significantly more rain than others, so take a look before booking that too-good-to-be-true deal.

Hurricane Season

The official end of the hurricane season in the Caribbean is on November 30 and storms are always a possibility. However, November is the least active month in the Atlantic hurricane season and the probability of encountering a storm is very low. Just in case, make sure your accommodations include some type of guarantee in case you need to cancel due to weather, and consider buying travel insurance. You can also look into islands that are less likely to experience storms, such as Aruba or Barbados.

Caribbean Weather in November

Temperatures across the Caribbean are warm and balmy in November, making it an ideal escape from the oncoming winter up north. While there is a remote possibility of a hurricane, more likely than not the biggest issue you'll come across is rain. November is the transition month from the rainy season to the dry season, so even though the occasional downpour is likely, there's much less precipitation and lower humidity than visiting in the peak of summer.

Even though November is generally still considered a wet month, rain typically comes in short and intense downpours instead of long days of nonstop showers. Even if your trip is punctuated with daily storms, you should still be able to enjoy plenty of sunshine throughout the day to make the most of your vacation. The water temperature of the Caribbean Sea hovers around a constant 81 degrees Fahrenheit (27 degrees Celsius) all year long, so even in November, you can comfortably swim and hang out at the beach.

What to Pack

When packing for the Caribbean in November, you'll definitely need to bring all your beach gear. Even if you're fleeing winter weather back home, you won't need any heavy jackets or sweaters on the islands. However, at least one lightweight and waterproof jacket is necessary in case you get caught in a rainstorm. If you're planning to eat out in finer restaurants or spend a night out in the clubs, you should also pack some dressier items and not just resort wear.

Summer may feel over by the time November arrives, but don't forget to bring other warm-weather essentials like sunscreen and a hat. Since you'll be in the tropics, mosquitoes are ubiquitous regardless of what island you visit. Don't forget insect repellant and even some lightweight clothing that covers your arms and legs.

November Events in the Caribbean

Despite being the shoulder season, there are plenty of events happening around the Caribbean to keep visitors entertained in November. From pirate festivals to several different boozy events, don't miss out on the region's most popular activities.

  • Pirates Week : The annual Pirates Week in the Cayman Islands celebrates the nation's cultural heritage and pirate legends. Spectators are treated to parades, firework displays, street dances, and costume contests. Each of the three Cayman Islands holds individual Pirates Week celebrations, with the biggest festivities taking place on Grand Cayman from November 19–24, 2020.
  • Barbados Food & Rum Festival : The three-day Barbados Food and Rum Festival is a series of culinary experiences with acclaimed chefs, rum experts, and mixologists. There are food and rum pairing events, fine dining that pairs local chefs with international ones, and a beach party at the Hilton Resort Barbados with live music and food tasting stations. It typically takes place during the first weekend of November, but the festival is canceled in 2020.
  • Divali (Diwali) : The Hindu Festival of Lights is a public holiday on the islands of Trinidad and Tobago, where about a third of the population traces its roots back to India. But for Divali, the whole nation comes together to celebrate, not just Hindus. The Divali Nagar —or City of Lights—in the city of Chaguanas is one of the largest holiday celebrations outside of India. The festival takes place over days and the exact dates change each year, but the main festivities revolve around November 14 in 2020.
  • Thanksgiving : Just because you're leaving home during the Thanksgiving holiday doesn't necessarily mean you're willing to give up the typical feast. If you want to celebrate Thanksgiving away from home, you'll have no trouble finding turkey dinners in restaurants of U.S. islands, such as Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands . Even many resorts in other islands host Thanksgiving meals for American guests.

November Travel Tips

  • Although November overall is considered the low season for tourists, the Caribbean is a popular destination for Thanksgiving getaways. Be sure to plan ahead if you're traveling during the holiday weekend.
  • Keep a close eye on the weather forecasts right before your trip to make sure no storms are expected.
  • If you'll be island hopping, book inter-island flights online and in advance to get the best deals.
  • Between the heat, humidity, and piña coladas, it's easy to get dehydrated. Always pack bottles of water when going to the beach or sightseeing to stay refreshed.

We’ll help you craft your itinerary as each of our destination recommendations comes with a list of the best things to do on that island.

  • Spend days of relaxation at Blue Lagoon Island
  • Shop handmade Bahamian crafts at the Nassau Straw Market
  • Hike and snorkel at The Stocking Island

The December temperatures in Belize — situated south of the Yucatan Peninsula — don’t exceed 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Its mild temperatures are accompanied by a low chance for rainfall, so you won’t have to worry about the rain ruining your tropical holiday.

It has breathtaking beaches and diverse wildlife, lush forests, rich culture, and uncrowded Mayan ruins.

  • Go snorkeling or scuba diving at the Belize Barrier Reef
  • Dive into the world-renowned marine sinkhole called The Great Blue Hole
  • Visit the heart of the ancient Mayan civilization
  • Catch the island’s holiday-lighted boat parade
  • Watch the Boxing Day Horse Race in Burrell Boom

Most Caribbean vacationers choose to visit Grenada from mid-December to mid-April. It offers extremely stable weather conditions with a maximum daytime temperature of 86 degrees Fahrenheit.

The island has something for everyone. Whether you’re a history buff, an avid surfer, or a spice lover — you’ll have something to satisfy your craving.

4. Grand Cayman (Cayman Islands)

The Cayman Islands are among the top Caribbean destinations December vacationers choose. And among the three islands that comprise the British Overseas Territory, Grand Cayman is the largest. The daily temperature there peaks at 84 degrees Fahrenheit.

Benefit from its dry and sunny weather and have fun on the aquamarine waters of the island. You can swim, dive, snorkel, or go on fishing. And if you’ve got many people waiting for your souvenirs, you’ll be glad to know that Grand Cayman is famous for duty-free shopping.

With the likelihood of rain decreasing significantly, Jamaica bursts into life in December. Its average temperature is around 84 degrees Fahrenheit.

If you don’t mind vacationing with a huge crowd, you’ll surely thrive on this Caribbean island that boasts many awesome beaches. However, food plays a huge part in any Jamaican year-end holiday. Make sure to taste the sorrel juice, fruit cake, and curried goat or ham in any of its vibrant restaurants.

6. Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is packed with activities and festivities from December to January. If you opt to go there towards the end of the year, you’ll enjoy daily temperatures at around 83 degrees Fahrenheit.

The warm and dry weather is fittingly complemented by its friendly people. Pack your clothes, bring a reliable camera, and enjoy the culture and gorgeous beaches of this tropical island nestled between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean.

  • Book a guided hiking tour at the El Yunque Rainforest
  • Do horseback riding through the island’s secluded beaches
  • Snorkel with turtles in the waters of the Puerto Rican capital of San Juan
  • Book an Old San Juan sunset cruise
  • Go on an ATV adventure at Campo Rico Ranch

7. Saint Kitts and Nevis

The dual-island nation is located between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Though the weather is pleasant year-round, you’ll have daily high temperatures of 83 degrees Fahrenheit during December.

An epitome of the world-famous Caribbean beauty, Saint Kitts and Nevis is gifted with sandy beaches, marvelous mountains, and tropical birds rarely seen in any other parts of the globe. One of the biggest events is the annual Carnival, which lasts from late November to early January .

  • Dip in the warm and clear waters of Oualie Beach
  • Have a sweet ride aboard the Sugar Train (built in the early 1900s, this was originally used to transport sugar cane)
  • See spectacular carnival costumes at Sugar Mas, the country’s National Carnival
  • Climb to the top slopes of the Brimstone Hill Fortress, dubbed the “Gibraltar of the West Indies”
  • Zipline over a lush jungle canopy via Sky Safaris

Why plan your Caribbean holiday in December? From the Bahamas and Belize to Grand Cayman and Puerto Rico, you have more islands to choose from because the hurricane season is finally over. Be sure to make your bookings early to avoid competing with other vacationers who want to take advantage of the region’s comfortable year-end weather.

Your choice of the best Caribbean island to visit in December ultimately comes down to your preference. But we’re pretty sure that no matter your pick, you’ll have a great time with your loved ones.

Can you believe THIS colourful island is only 20 MINUTES from CANCUN?! 🌴🏖️🥥🐠 I didn’t know what to expect when we hopped on a ferry to Isla Mujeres! 😬 as someone who prefers remote islands and discovering hidden gems, visiting an island that’s often rated one of the best things to do in Mexico, I thought I’d be completely let down by how commercialised and touristy it felt😰😰 BUT as soon as we stepped onto the island, I immediately felt the care-free island vibes and the kinda heat that just makes you want to ditch your shoes and run to the beach!! 🏃‍♀️🙌🏼 and you literally are STEPS away from the coastline no matter where you are on the island, so it’s hard not to feel like you’re on a magical little dot in the ocean! 🌊✨ Yes it’s popular, but there’s a reason! Isla Mujeres honestly caught us off guard with how beautiful it is and how great the vibes are. The busy atmosphere actually compliments the island, it gives it such a buzz. And in NO WAY is it busier than Cancun, Tulum or anywhere else on the Yucatan Peninsula 🫣😍 Just love visiting places with low expectations, and then end up having it so amazing 🥹🏝️🌺#mexico #islamujeres #islamujeresmexico #mexicotravel #cancunmexico #islamujerescancun #visitmexico mexico travel, tulum travel, isla mujeres travel, mexico summer, travel ideas, travel aesthetic

9 Less Crowded Caribbean Islands That You Should Visit

The Caribbean Islands offer the perfect escape route from adverse winter. These are the least crowded islands to visit here.

The Caribbean Islands offer the perfect escape route from adverse winter. With the increased masses seeking to have a taste of the Caribbean sun, these places can get a bit crowded sometimes.

The biggest mistake most vacationers make is going to popular sites like the Bahamas, which are always crowded. The secret to beating crowds is selecting places that are less frequented. After all, it is an adventure, and visiting new places should be the priority.

Here are the least crowded Caribbean islands to visit.

Antigua has for the longest time fronted itself as the leading leeward island of the Caribbean. What people fail to recognize is that it being popular does always amount to overcrowding. With 365 sandy beaches spread across the island, there is enough space for everyone to explore without feeling that their privacy is being breached. Apart from the vast beach area, Antigua is also a divers’ den, thanks to its magnificent reefs.

Bonaire is another significant mention on the list of less crowded islands. The tiny nature of the island means most vacationers will shun it away for having very little to explore. But truth be told, these vacationers are always wrong. Bonaire has more than what the average vacationer would have asked for. With over sixty dive sites, 400 caves, and windsurfing spots, there is a lot to do out there.

7 St. Lucia

There’s no way this tropical paradise is missing from the list of less crowded Caribbean destinations . Unlike other less frequented islands, St. Lucia has a population of close to 200,000 people, but this doesn’t make it overcrowded. The island has a vast area to accommodate everyone with the beachfront left undeveloped for adventurous activities. This island offers more than just a beach experience. It has hiking trails where vacationers can stretch their legs while still enjoying beautiful sunsets from the island’s volcanic peaks.

Also known as Spice Island, Grenada is a West Indies tourist destination that has maintained a low profile for the longest time. The island is popular for its unreal white sandy beaches that have remained unaltered because of the low traffic in the area. Until 2017, not much was known to the public about this island until direct flights from New York were introduced. Since then, the area has been a bee hive of activities while still not being too crowded. The island’s pristine blue waters are always a vibe.

5 Cayman Islands

Deep in the Western Caribbean Sea is a British territory whose popularity among vacationers has risen in recent days. From luxury beach resorts to shopping villages, this island is mostly frequented by tourists looking for a luxurious vacation. With many people shying away from this site because of the high costs, others are left to enjoy an undercrowded environment, all to themselves. From wildlife and seabirds to deep-sea fishing excursions, there is more than what the average vacationer would ask for.

Popularly known as Saint Eustatius, Statia is among the few standing Caribbean islands that have maintained their natural appeal. The secret to the island’s glowing state is its low traffic. Human beings have made it a habit to destroy and deplete natural resources over time, something that this island has been immune to. Vacationers who have the privilege to visit here are treated to some epic ocean scenes. Diving deep into corals and seagrass is a whole new experience.

3 Elbow Cay

Caribbean Island vacations have never got this better. With the Elbow Cay, vacationers have a treat of their lifetime on a less crowded island. Measuring approximately 4.5 miles long, this island can be small on paper, but matters of the ground are different. With a population of close to 500 people, the island has left most of its land bare for adventure. This Caribbean destination has enough accommodation that cuts across all social classes. The island’s underwater sea park is a must-visit for tourists. For tourists who want to learn scuba diving or snorkeling, this is the right place.

In the list of less crowded islands is Barbados. From its incredible nightlife and culture to the fascinating beaches, Barbados is among the hidden treasures of the Caribbean. Vacationers that push forward toward the capital have even more on their plate to explore. Island vacations don’t need to be confined to beaches alone. Historical sites too can serve the purpose. But for those whose interests are in water activities alone, Barbados is known to produce ideal tides for sea surfing.

1 Bird Island

Seated off the Belize Coast is Bird Island, a private island whose low traffic is a huge turn-on. This destination isn’t that big, but its reduced size doesn’t make it any lesser. If anything, the fact that most people shun it automatically makes it less crowded. As its name suggests, it is home to many species of birds. Also, it is a good place to kayak and try out other water activities.

Turks and Caicos

Best for: Secluded white sand beaches

A British Overseas Territory, Turks and Caicos is an archipelago of 40 islands in the Atlantic Ocean, and it is famed for its stunning shores—but none more so than Grace Bay Beach. Located on the northeast coast of Providenciales and renowned for its pristine white sand and turquoise waters, it's consistently ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the world (these are the top beach spots in the United States ) and is the crown jewel of the island. Other notable spots to catch some rays and enjoy the sea are Bright Beach, Smith's Reef and Turtle Cove.

What to do: Ever heard of Seven Mile Beach? It's a reference to the uninterrupted stretch that runs from Leeward Beach (across from Grace Bay Beach, Bright Beach and Smith's Reef) to Turtle Cove and the very reason so many people choose to vacation in Turks and Caicos. Those who love diving will be excited to learn that Turks and Caicos is home to one of the largest barrier reefs in the world (roughly 340 miles of barrier reef surround the islands).

Where to stay: Another major selling point of Turks and Caicos? The resorts. Wymara Resort & Villas sits on the pristine Grace Bay Beach and offers such family-friendly activities as snorkeling excursions, jet skiing and wind surfing, as well as kayaking through the mangrove channels. Indulge in spa treatments at the on-site spa or Caribbean cuisine prepared by award-winning Australian chef Andrew Mirosch. Aside from a luxurious bathrooms and 400 thread count sheets, each room comes with daily breakfast.

Best for: Rum enthusiasts

The Caribbean's easternmost island, Barbados is blessed with beautiful beaches and coral reefs (make sure to pack your reef-safe sunscreen ) that line the coast and attract visitors from around the globe with incredible snorkeling and scuba diving. Fun fact: Barbados is the only Caribbean island to have formed from the continental plates colliding rather than by volcano. But many visitors come here with one thing on their mind: Rum. And Barbados is where it all began, making this one of the best Caribbean islands to visit for a fantastic cocktail.

What to do: Mount Gay Rum Distillery became the birthplace of rum in 1703. Here you can tour the facility, try a premium flight of four signature rums or take a cocktail workshop with an award-winning mixologist. When you're ready to take a dip in the sea, calm waters make Bath Beach one of the best for swimming, while Crane Beach is known as one of the most picturesque spots on the island. Adrenaline junkies from around the globe flock to Silver Sands, a gusty outpost on the southern coast, acclaimed for windsurfing. Those looking to escape the sun can venture down into the cave system of Harrison's Cave to see ancient stalactites and stalagmites.

Where to stay: Families can find fun for all ages at Tamarind by Elegant Hotels , a Mediterranean-style all-inclusive resort on the West Coast of Barbados. The property offers an array of Bajan activities, from dialect lessons to beach cricket (Barbados' sport of choice), kids and teens events, as well as unlimited non-motorized sports—snorkeling, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding.

Saint Lucia

Best for: Outdoor adventures

From mountains and rainforests to plantations and beaches, the eastern Caribbean island nation of Saint Lucia has a setting for every type of vacationer. This member of the British Commonwealth offers visitors unspoiled and lush scenery, plenty of natural hot springs, waterfalls, diving, beautiful beaches and the iconic Pitons, a pair of pointy mountains on the west coast.

What to do: Adventurers can zipline, hike and explore Gros Piton, the second-highest peak on the island. For animal lovers, there's horseback riding on the beach. History buffs can tour Fort Rodney, built upon a peak located within the Pigeon Island National Landmark, and will be treated to a 360-degree view of the island to boot. Those looking for some R&R can let their stress melt away at Soufriere, a scenic town on the island's west coast that's home to many hot springs and mineral baths.

Where to stay: Luxury-seekers can kick back at one of the island's five-star resorts. Situated on 100 acres of lush rainforest on the site of an 18th-century sugar plantation, Sugar Beach impresses with its picture-perfect views of the majestic UNESCO World Heritage–listed Piton Mountains and the Caribbean Sea. Book a treatment in the Rainforest Spa—there's even a couple's treehouse treatment room built on stilts—or sip a rum cocktail in the poolside cabanas.

Best for: White sand beaches

Antigua, located in the Lesser Antilles, encompasses 108 square miles of soft sand and fertile plains. Ringed by coral reefs and cerulean waters, this sun-soaked island is renowned for its expansive coastline and multitude of beaches. There are more than 365, so you could visit a different one each day for an entire year! Coupled with the pleasant climate—cool breezes and low humidity—it's easy to see why Antigua is such a popular tourist destination.

What to do: Looking for the most Instagram-worthy beach on the island? Head to Half Moon Bay on the eastern shore to get those shots. The waves are strong here, so it's best for bodysurfing and boogie boarding and not swimming. Try snorkeling at Galleon Beach in English Harbour or take a long, sandy walk (about a mile) at Jolly Beach.

Where to stay: On the southern part of Antigua is Curtain Bluff , and let's just say there's a reason—well, a few—that it's a mainstay on luxury travel lists. Among them: an unmatched seaside setting, gorgeous gardens and world-class accommodations, complete with marble bathrooms, coffered wood ceilings, oversize soaking tubs and verandas. Those looking to unplug will be pleased to hear rooms do not include TVs.

Best for: A quick getaway

Proximity to Miami—it's just a 30-minute flight—makes the Bahamas a convenient escape. But once you arrive, you'll feel as though you're a world away. For starters, the Bahamas isn't one singular island, but 700 isles in the Atlantic. Nassau Paradise Island is a top tourist destination and for good reason: It has 300 days of sunshine a year, water temperatures averaging 80 degrees and beautiful beaches, most notably Paradise Beach on the northern shore.

What to do: There's plenty more to explore beyond Nassau. On the east side of Harbour Island is Pink Sands Beach, a 3-mile swath of soft-pink shoreline punctuated by a handful of private villas and low-rise hotels. The vibe is serene and relaxed and the scenery stunning. While you're there, be sure to savor some local delicacies, like conch. Looking for a wildlife experience you can't get anywhere else? Visit Pig Beach, located on Big Major Cay in Exuma, to swim with a colony of adorable feral pigs.

Where to stay: Those looking for a secluded getaway should consider The Cove Eleuthera , a high-end boutique resort nestled on 45 unspoiled acres. Accommodations include luxury guest rooms, suites, villas and cottages. There are also high-end dining options, a spa and a hilltop infinity pool.

Saint Martin

Best for: Multicultural experiences

Saint Martin comprises two separate countries in the northeast Caribbean Sea and is divided between its northern French side (Saint-Martin) and it's southern Dutch side (Sint Maarten). There's a rumor that it's sunny here 365 days a year. We couldn't quite confirm that with the weather service, but we can say that every day certainly feels sunny when you're relaxing on one of the 37 beaches on this delightful island or taking to the clear, warm ocean to swim, sail, water ski, snorkel or fish. The temperature on the small island averages 80 degrees and never dips much below 70 degrees, even in the middle of winter.

What to do: Orient Bay Beach is the first stop for many Saint Martin visitors thanks to its long coastline and inviting waters. But since it's on the French side of the island, it's worth noting that clothing is optional (the nudity is mostly relegated to the south section). A visit to Loterie Farm, a nature sanctuary on 135 acres, means an afternoon of hiking and zip-lining through the jungle canopy. Leave time for duty-free shopping on Front Street or plan a day out on a catamaran.

Where to stay: Check into the Orient Beach Hotel , the only lodging right on the sugar-white sand of Orient Bay Beach and the perfect location from which to explore the surrounding beaches, restaurants and shops. Along with your comfortable accommodations in one of 35 beachfront suites, beach chairs and umbrellas are complimentary and breakfast is included.

Best for: Shore diving and snorkeling

As the lesser-known Dutch Caribbean island off the coast of Venezuela (its cousins are Aruba and Curacao), Bonaire is focused on preserving its natural resources—the land, sea and reef—for generations to come. The Bonaire National Marine Park, founded in 1979, consists of 2,700 hectares of coral reef, seagrass beds and mangroves and is one of the oldest marine reserves in the world. Thanks to this dedicated effort, tourists are treated to a spectacular array of marine life. (If you enjoy underwater adventures, don't miss this list of beaches with the clearest water in the world .)

What to do: Grab a snorkel and some fins (which you can usually rent from a hotel or dive shop) and head straight into the water—this is the best Caribbean island to visit if you don't want to take a boat to a dive site, as 54 of the 85 official dive sites are accessible from shore. Keep your eyes peeled for 57 species of coral and 350 species of fish, including colorful triggerfish, parrotfish, tangs and moray eel, in these clear and warm waters. On land, watch for more than 200 species of birds, explore more than 400 caves or 300 kilometers of biking trails, or try your hand at land sailing on a Blokart, also known as a land yacht. As you drive around the island, be mindful of wild donkeys that often stand in the middle of the road while snacking on vegetation.

Where to stay: There's only one private beach on Bonaire and Harbour Village Beach Club is your key to accessing it. This lush property features enormous and comfortable suites, plenty of hammocks and lounge chairs on the palm-tree-lined beach (read: you won't have to wake up early to save a spot), and breezy seaside dining at the ship-shaped La Balandra Restaurant & Bar, where the barracuda ceviche is a don't-miss appetizer. The best part? The shallow reef butts up against the restaurant, so you can literally walk into the water from the beach and begin snorkeling among colorful fish.

Best for: Beach bums

Beaches, beaches, beaches—it's what Aruba, a Dutch island just north of Venezuela, does best. We're talking pure pristine white sand and turquoise ocean heaven, nearly everywhere you look, making it one of the best Caribbean islands to visit if sun and sand are at the top of your vacation wish list. Aruba is blessed with clear skies, bright sunshine and cooling trade winds practically every day of the year. It's also one of 10 islands you can still visit during hurricane season .

What to do: Top picks for a beach day you'll never forget include the award-wining Eagle Beach, which is the widest on the island and the perfect place to view the iconic Fofoti trees. The 2-mile-long Palm Beach is perfect for swimming and snorkeling, and Mangel Halto Beach is an ideal spot for snorkeling and shore diving due to the area's influx of parrot fish and blue tangs. When you've had enough beach time, head to Arikok National Park to view cultural heritage sites, such as caves and original rock drawings, and check out Aruba's natural pool (Conchi)—watch for the water spraying over the volcanic rock formation.

Where to stay: Situated on over a mile of white pristine beach, family-friendly Tamarijn Aruba All Inclusive offers guests access to 11 dining options, eight bars and four freshwater pools. Plus, you'll find fitness classes, a guided island e-bike tour, snorkeling, a rock-climbing wall and even a kids-only club.

Puerto Rico

Best for: Passport-less Caribbean cuisine

Dubbed the "Dining Capital of the Caribbean," the U.S. territory Puerto Rico offers the perfect destination for those looking to explore the Caribbean culinary scene—and you won't need a passport to taste this tasty cuisine. A fusion of Spanish, African, Taíno Indian and American influences, the island's history and diverse culture shaped its food, resulting in a unique blend of flavors and dishes.

What to do: Puerto Rico has a vibrant street food scene, so be sure to explore food stalls and kiosks alongside finer dining establishments and award-winning restaurants. Consider timing your trip to the numerous food festivals and events being hosted throughout the year to further celebrate the local culinary scene. Once you've had your fill of food, you'll be ready to explore the colorful architecture of Old San Juan, marvel at the Bioluminescent Mosquito Bay after dark and chill out at Flamenco Beach.

Where to stay: Further enhance your food-focused trip with a stay at Dorado Beach , a Ritz-Carlton Reserve. It's known for its exceptional culinary program, which includes three restaurants showcasing the flavors and techniques of Italy, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. As one of the 10 best resorts in Puerto Rico , this property sits on 50 acres of serene coastline and boasts a spa sanctuary with an infinity reflection pool overlooking a pineapple garden.

Saint Kitts

Best for: Hiking

In 2022, Saint Kitts was awarded the Best Caribbean Hiking Destination in Caribbean Journal's Travelers Choice Awards—and you'll need to plan a longer stay if you want to tackle all the amazing hikes on this West Indies island. Alongside neighboring Nevis, these two islands make up one country known as the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis . Divers will also be impressed with Saint Kitts, with such dive sites as the Wreck of River Taw, Devil's Cavern and Friars Bay Reef.

What to do: Grab your hiking boots and get ready for plenty of action. Mount Liamuiga, a dormant volcanic crater that stands nearly 3,800 feet high, is the highest point on Saint Kitts and Nevis and one of the tallest peaks in the Caribbean. On the way to the crest, hikers are treated to the 360-degree splendor that is Central Forest Reserve National Park. Other popular hikes include Bat Cave and Waterfall (yes, hundreds of small bats make their home here) and Radio Tower, which is a brisk hike that delivers panoramic views of the entire island. Ready for the toughest hike on the island? At Dos D'anse Pond, the trail climbs through green foliage and a 900-foot gutter before reaching the gorgeous freshwater pond that's lined with tropical plants.

Where to stay: Families are sure to love St. Kitts Marriott Resort & The Royal Beach Casino , a beachfront resort with such activities as outdoor movie night, ladder ball, cornhole, pickleball courts and a photo scavenger hunt. Guests can take a dip in one of the three on-site pools and participate in aqua aerobics classes. The Emerald Mist Spa offers massages that can be booked in the resort's beachside cabanas for the ultimate relaxation.

Dominican Republic

Best for: All-inclusive resorts

As the second-largest Caribbean country, the Dominican Republic has everything you want in an island vacation: white sand beaches, delicious food, golf courses and plenty of beautiful and exhilarating attractions. And the best way to experience all of this is by staying at an all-inclusive resort, something the island specializes in—from budget-friendly options and family-friendly all-inclusive resorts to luxury and adults-only retreats, these properties make vacationing easy by including your taxes, gratuities, meals, drinks, entertainment and activities.

What to do: Even though everything is already included in your all-inclusive resort, you'll still probably want to get off property and see more of the island and immerse yourself in the culture. Visit the jungle habitat Monkeyland to play with the friendly squirrel monkeys; tee off at the par-72 Jack Nicklaus signature course Punta Espada Golf Course; or enjoy a day trip to Saona Island for a little extra solitude among the beautiful beaches.

Where to stay: Home to the 16,000 square-foot Splash Island waterpark, Panchi Kids Club, Vibe Teen Club, on-site bowling alley, arcade, ice cream parlor, candy shop, escape room and more, the five-star all-inclusive Lopesan Costa Bávaro Resort, Spa & Casino is the ultimate Caribbean oasis for kids and parents alike. Come for the picturesque white sand beaches and stay for the seven freshwater pools, wide array of internationally inspired dining concepts and relaxing spa.

Best for: Foodies

Anguilla, a British Overseas Territory in the eastern Caribbean Sea near Saint Martin, is revered as one of the best culinary destinations in the Caribbean, making it one of the best Caribbean islands to visit. This is due to its blend of inspiration hailing from native Caribbean cooking, Spanish, French and English influences and a strong base of African traditions. As such, visitors will find restaurants offering truly authentic dishes, such as barbecue and jerk, callaloo and marinated seafood dishes. Of course, the 33 beautiful beaches aren't too shabby either—Meads Bay Beach tops many best-beaches lists.

What to do: Eat! At only 26 miles in length and a few miles wide, Anguilla does an impressive job of packing a lot of flavor into its small island. The nation's national dish is pigeon peas and rice, a one-pot dish of pigeon peas, rice, spices and herbs. Grilled spiny lobster is a delicious treat at Da'Vida Restaurant, where the views are equally fantastic. For a more laid-back dining experience, visit the Sunshine Shack on Rendezvous Bay for a seafood and barbecue lunch with the sand beneath your toes.

Where to stay: Speaking of the breathtaking Rendezvous Bay, it's where you'll find the 178 luxurious suites and villas of Aurora Anguilla Resort & Golf Club . Aside from multiple golf courses, you'll find a rejuvenating spa, cooking classes and wine tastings, a family-friendly pool complex with a splash pad and lazy river and an amphitheater for live performances.
