The Best and Worst MSC Cruise Ships: Full Ranking for 2024!

msc cruise ships best and worst

MSC Cruises, has a fleet of 21 impressive ships . A very high number that offers a wide range of choices for travelers. However, this variety can sometimes be confusing when trying to find the ideal cruise.

To better guide potential customers, I decided to create a ranking that orders ships from the best to the worst based on customer reviews gathered from major cruise websites. After calculating the average score, it emerged that MSC Bellissima , launched in 2019 as part of the Meraviglia class, is the most liked ship. In contrast, despite being one of the newest, the MSC Seascape ranks last according to customer reviews.

Let’s see every ship in detail!

Table of Contents

1. MSC Bellissima

Launched in 2019, Bellissima offers a sophisticated cruising experience with a focus on technology and comfort. Reviews often highlight the high quality of food at both the buffet and restaurants. However, there are mixed opinions on the adoption of overly technological solutions, such as the need to use the “MSC for me” app. Some reviews also note occasionally slow service and excessive crowding in the main venues.

From the opinions, it emerges that MSC Bellissima is the best ship in many aspects, most notably for its excellent cleanliness of the cabins and throughout the ship decks. Passengers also consider it the best ship in terms of size: not too big, not too small.

2. MSC Seaside

MSC Seaside, launched in 2017, is second in the list of the most appreciated ships. The idea of the ship is to emphasize its connection with the sea. Among its strengths is the wonderful outdoor deck that offers breathtaking and panoramic views of the sea and the ports visited. At the same time, as a downside, some customers said that the outdoor areas can’t be used in bad weather.

For this reason, cruisers consider it one of the best ships for cruises during the summer or for cruises in warm destinations.

3. MSC Sinfonia

MSC Sinfonia was lower in the ranking but climbed several positions after undergoing modernization works in 2015. The ship is loved because it has a more cozy and intimate environment, making it the preferred choice for guests who like smaller ships.

Reviews highlight the ease of moving on board and the more attentive service for the fewer passengers. However, the drawbacks include more limited entertainment options compared to larger ships.

4. MSC Seaview

Launched in 2018, Seaview offers an experience similar to Seaside, with a focus on outdoor areas. Therefore, its strengths include spacious outdoor decks, swimming pools, and numerous outdoor activities.

Some passengers found it a bit too crowded, and as with Seaside, good weather during the cruise is needed to enjoy all the best spaces.

5. MSC Meraviglia

MSC Meraviglia is a state-of-the-art ship with a spectacular LED promenade and a wide range of entertainment options. Guests have greatly enjoyed the variety of onboard activities available for all ages, from an excellent mini-club to adult entertainment. Everyone also liked the ship’s interior design, which was considered luxurious and elegant.

Like many larger ships, some negative reviews mention excessive crowding in common areas, but only during peak season.

6. MSC Divina

MSC Divina is one of those ships that is in the middle ground, neither too old nor one of the newest. Launched in 2012, it is renowned for its elegance and sophisticated design.

It has gained many points for the refined atmosphere onboard and a good selection of restaurants. In short, it is an excellent ship for those who are looking for a good ship without excesses.

7. MSC Preziosa

MSC Preziosa, launched in 2013, is the sister ship of the Divina I mentioned earlier. Being very similar ships, the customer ratings were almost identical. The only thing that changes is the interior decor in terms of colors and design. The spaces, however, remain mostly unchanged.

8. MSC Grandiosa

MSC Grandiosa was the first ship of the Meraviglia-Plus class, very similar to the Meraviglia class but with some improvements and a slightly larger gross tonnage. The ship is renowned for its imposing size and wide range of entertainment. On board, there are many restaurants and recreational activities. At the same time, the ship may seem a bit complicated, especially for inexperienced cruise passengers.

9. MSC Musica

Inaugurated in 2006, MSC Musica combines classic design with modern comforts. It is a medium-sized ship, so it has attracted positive reviews from those seeking relaxation. The atmosphere onboard is calm and relaxed, without crowds or large groups of people.

The flaws, however, are those that emerge with older ships. Being a 2006 ship, the years are showing, although it still appears well-maintained overall.

10. MSC Splendida

Splendida, the sister ship of Fantasia, offers elegance, comfort, and fun. Guests generally like the ship overall, finding it to be the right size and spacious. The entertainment on this ship has been particularly well-received, with guests reporting never feeling bored.

However, there are some criticisms regarding the food, perhaps explaining why this ship is only in the middle of the rankings.

11. MSC Virtuosa

Launched in 2021, MSC Virtuosa is one of the newest ships in the fleet. It stands out for its technological innovations and entertainment options, offering cutting-edge technology and a wide variety of fun activities.

However, like many other ships, its main drawback is overcrowding. Several customers have complained about long lines at both the buffet and reception.

12. MSC World Europa

The flagship, MSC World Europa, is at the twelfth position in the ranking of MSC Cruises’ best and worst ships. It is the newest ship, launched in 2022, and is inherently the most innovative with cutting-edge technology. The main criticism is the difficulty in moving around inside the ship, with some cruisers finding it too sprawling.

13. MSC Armonia

MSC Armonia is the oldest ship in the MSC fleet. It was launched in 2001 but renovated in 2014. Contrary to what some might think, the oldest ship is not necessarily the worst.

MSC Armonia has received good reviews for offering a more classic and intimate experience. The ship provides a welcoming and personal atmosphere that is perfect for those seeking a quieter cruise. The drawbacks are what you might expect: as the smallest ship, it has fewer restaurant and entertainment options than the larger ships.

14. MSC Seashore

MSC Seashore was the first ship of the Seaside EVO class, essentially an enhanced version of its sister ships Seaside and Seaview. Its strengths include more spacious cabins and excellent outdoor areas. However, like the other ships, the main drawbacks include overcrowded areas and sometimes a lack of good service.

15. MSC Fantasia

Launched in 2008, MSC Fantasia combines luxury and innovation. Although it was an excellent ship, several years have passed since its launch, and it’s starting to show signs of aging compared to newer ships.

However, the reviews still have a good rating and classify her as a good cruise ship.

16. MSC Magnifica

MSC Magnifica blends traditional style with modernity. Launched in 2010, it belongs to the Musica class but is slightly larger than its three sisters (Orchestra, Musica, and Poesia). Its positive points are the good mix of restaurants and entertainment activities, suitable for all ages. However, it lacks some features found in the newer fleet.

17. MSC Poesia

MSC Poesia launched just before MSC Magnifica (mentioned previously), is known for its calm environment, perfect for a stress-free cruise. The cabins are comfortable, and there’s a good variety of culinary choices onboard.

18. MSC Lirica

MSC Lirica is one of the older ships in the company’s fleet, but it was renovated in 2015. Despite the renovation, its age is pronounced, and some guests find it quite visible. It may be a good choice for travelers who are more focused on the itinerary and destinations than the ship itself.

19. MSC Orchestra

Launched in 2007, MSC Orchestra offers a good combination of relaxation and entertainment. Although not very large, it has a diverse selection of restaurants and bars and a well-structured entertainment program. However, cruisers have found the layout of the spaces sometimes confusing, and it may lack some of the attractions of newer ships.

20. MSC Opera

MSC Opera is almost at the bottom of the MSC ship rankings. Thus, cruisers consider it one of the worst ships. It’s relatively small, which might limit daytime activities or food options. It could be a good choice for experienced cruisers who know what they want and what to expect from a smaller ship.

21. MSC Seascape

Surprisingly, according to reviews, MSC Seascape, launched in 2022, is considered the worst ship of the cruise line.

Despite being a brand-new ship, passengers might have high expectations for new vessels and end up disappointed, even by minor flaws. Seascape is known for its revolutionary design; many passengers find it appealing. They also love the ship’s stunning interiors and the excellent entertainment and dining options. However, as with similar ships, criticism mainly comes from the overcrowding and the not-so-good service quality.

Cruise Trail

The best ships of MSC Cruises – which one suits you?

Guide to MSC Cruises best cruise ships

MSC Grandiosa, MSC Virtuosa, and the brand new MSC Euribia are among the best ships of MSC Cruises and amongst some of the largest cruise ships at sea. They all belong to the Meraviglia Plus class ships.

Italian-born and built MSC Cruises launched these ships in 2019, 2021, and 2023 respectively. MSC Euribia is hailed as one of the most environmentally friendly cruise ships at sea. It boasts advanced admissions technology and modern wastewater treatments.

If you are looking for a value-for-money cruise vacation, we recommend that you take a close look at the best ships of MSC Cruises.

Quick navigation

Traditionally elegant cruise ships for all ages

MSC Cruises is a big seller in the travel industry. From loyal MSC customers who choose them time and again for a cruise vacation to families completely new to the cruise experience, MSC delivers. And very often for well under the price that other cruise lines charge. Especially attractive if you are cruising on a budget.

Many MSC guests we have spoken to have commented about the classy feel of the MSC Ships. And we tend to agree.

From layout to design and decor, the cruise ships are elegant with a touch of glamour. This is especially true for the newest ships with fantastic architectural details.

The larger the ship, the younger the crowd

This is a trend for most cruise lines. The reason is that larger cruise ships have more activities and entertainment venues. And this attracts a younger crowd looking for an action-packed experience on board.

So, in addition to guests in the 60+ age group, traditionally the largest segment of cruise customers, you will find couples, families, and honeymooners on board, especially on the largest ships sailing the oceans.

How do MSC Cruises compare with Royal Caribbean Group?

The two cruise lines, MSC Cruises and Royal Caribbean Group offer worldwide cruises on some of the most giant cruise ships at sea. But in many ways, they offer very different experiences.

MSC entertainment – hit or miss?

Royal Caribbean has a reputation for having great entertainment on board in the form of Broadway-style shows. And to put it plainly, MSC does not.

It does have its acclaimed Cirque du Soleil show on MSC Grandiosa, Bellissima, and Meraviglia. If you enjoy comedians, magicians, and sing-and-dance routines, then MSC will suit you as long as you are content with the same type of show each night.

On the whole, the theater experience on board Royal Caribbean is, hands down, of a better variety.

But all this may change as the MSC ships become bigger, newer, and more advanced. They need to get the shows up to the same Broadway-style quality that Royal Caribbean does so brilliantly.

The cruise cuisine

Cuisine onboard Royal Caribbean is often of slightly higher quality and variety than MSC Cruises. It’s not that we don’t love Italian style food, there is always a very good range of dishes and cuisine available. And some of our meals were outstanding when we tested three different MSC cruise ships.

But overall, there is a difference, and Royal Caribbean has a better reputation for its cuisine. If you are a first-time cruise guest choosing MSC Cruises, you will find the food range and variety more than plenty. And we recommend you try out the specialty restaurants on board, which are very good.

An international guest list

Royal Caribbean attracts more American and Canadian customers compared to MSC Cruises, which has a more significant number of international guests. And this makes sense being a European cruise company.

And with this, all announcements are repeated in many languages, whereas Royal Caribbean tends to stick to English. Regardless of where you come from, you can be sure to meet new friends from all corners of the world.

How to choose the best cruise ship for you

When choosing your MSC cruise ship, look closely at the onboard facilities.

The older and smaller the cruise ship, the less variety of facilities on board. The newer and bigger the cruise ship, the more bells and whistles you will find.

Cruise to get you where you want to go

Both MSC Cruises and Royal Caribbean Group have fantastic itineraries. Both offer the “core” stops that most other cruise lines include. For example, in the Caribbean, there are the Bahamas, Cozumel, Jamaica, and Grand Cayman Islands.

In Europe, there is Barcelona, Rome, Venice, and Athens . And then many other stops can be unique to that particular cruise line.

MSC Cruises also offers its unique island experience in the Bahamas (as Royal Caribbean does at CocoCay). MSC has Ocean Cay Marine Reserve, where you’ll find beaches, cafes, bars, and shopping.

MSC Ocean Cay Marine Reserve is part of the Bimini chain of islands in the Bahamas, just 100km east of Miami.

So check the itineraries, research the ports of call, and draw up your bucket list of dream destinations you want to visit.

Then start looking at itineraries that tick most places. Is there a great ship that can get you there? Look at the ship and facilities on board. Narrow your list until you find the right one for you and your family.

What is MSC Yacht Club, and is it worth the extra price tag?

MSC Cruises offers different types of cruising “experiences” in the price categories of inside, window, balcony, and suite cabins.

The three main categories are Bella, Fantastica, and Aurea . You can find detailed information about what’s included in each “experience” here .

And then there is the most expensive price category, MSC Yacht Club .

MSC Yacht Club is an all-suite price category with 24-hour butler service, a dedicated concierge, and access to a private lounge, restaurant, and pool deck exclusively for Yacht Club guests.

A complimentary mini-bar and a wide-screen TV in your cabin are also included. You have free access to the thermal suite in the Spa area, but actual treatments are charged extra.

If you choose this category and book a suite, be sure to know if you are booking a balcony or if your suite has panoramic windows. MSC Cruises boast their Yacht Club category as a “ship within a ship” concept. And it is excellent. Certainly comparable to the Royal Caribbeans Aqua class, and many guests say they get more value with Yacht Club than the Aqua class.

The latest MSC concept – Explore Journeys

Earlier in 2021, MSC Cruises announced that they are taking this concept of Yacht Club one step further and building a luxury brand.

This whole new class of suite-only ships will be named Explore Journeys . Look out for more information on these new ships.

MSC Cruises’ fleet of ships

Seaside and seaside evo class ships of msc cruises.

MSC’s “Seaside” class first started sailing in 2017. There are currently three ships sailing and one planned for launch in 2022:

 • MSC Seaside
 • MSC Seaview
 • MSC Seashore
 • MSC Seascape

They are visually stunning ships with a guest capacity of over 5000. As sister ships, MSC Seaview and MSC Seaside sail the Mediterranean in the summer before heading to the Caribbean and the private island paradise of MSC Ocean Cay for winter.

MSC Seashore and its sister ship, Seascape, are slightly more extensive than the Seaside class ships above. And therefore, these ships have been classed as MSC Seaside EVO (meaning “evolution”).

They are more environmentally friendly and have a slightly larger capacity (around 5400 guests) than MSC Seaside and MSC Seaview.

However, they are smaller than the 6300 guest capacity ships in the Meraviglia Plus class .

What we love about MSC Seashore class ships is their waterfront concept with huge outdoor promenades, bringing you closer to the ocean.

There are some fantastic architectural moments on board, for example, the glass-floored bridge – The Bridge of Sighs, and the Swarovski Staircase. So you will undoubtedly feel you are floating in a luxurious hotel when on board.

MSC Seashore will sail in the Caribbean, including MSC’s private island Ocean Cay and The Antilles, in summer and winter.

Meraviglia class ships of MSC Cruises

 • MSC Meraviglia
 • MSC Bellissima

In 2017 when MSC Cruises launched its latest advanced ship onto the cruise market, Meraviglia, it became one of the largest ships at sea. Also on board are MSC’s first solo cabins for guests traveling alone. In total, these ships can accommodate 4500 guests on board.

Quickly followed two years later by its beautiful sister ship, MSC Bellissima, both are glamorous and packed full of fun activities that work perfectly for families.

Meraviglia Plus class ships of MSC Cruises

 • MSC Grandiosa
 • MSC Virtuosa
 • MSC World Europa
 • MSC Euribia
 • MSC World America

MSC Grandiosa was the first of this Plus class, launched in 2019, and is sailing in the Mediterranean in the summer.

MSC Virtuosa is their newest ship at sea. She will sail in the United Arab Emirates and the Mediterranean.

MSC World Europa has three more planned sisters in the same “World” class in 2024, 2025, and 2027 and will be among the largest cruise ships at sea, accommodating 6,850 guests.

The first is MSC World America, which will cruise from Miami to the Caribbean in Spring 2025.

MSC World Europa will be MSCs first LNG ( liquefied natural gas ) powered ship .

Brand new to and rounding off the Meriviglia Plus class ships is the beautiful MSC Euribia , launched from the port in Copenhagen in June 2023 and sailing in Northern Europe and the Norwegian Fjords for its first season at sea.

MSC Fantasia class ships of MSC Cruises

 • MSC Fantasia
 • MSC Splendida
 • MSC Preziosa

Built in 2008 and 2009, respectively, MSC Fantasia and MSC Splendida are elegant ships with onboard facilities such as a theater, pools and spa, mini golf, and basketball courts. They attract slighter older guests, there are fewer families with small children, and therefore offer a more relaxed type of cruise.

We have cruised Fantasia around the Mediterranean and Splendida to the Norwegian Fjords, both excellent itineraries. There are, however, limited activities on board for families. MSC Splendida and MSC Fantasia are in the Mediterranean for the summer of 2022.

MSC Divina and MSC Preziosa are similar ships but are larger, accommodating more guests with more activities on board. MSC Divina cruises in the Caribbean, including the private island of MSC Ocean Cay , and MSC Preziosa offers cruises in Northern Europe, the Baltics, and the spectacular Norwegian Fjords.

MSC Musica class ship of MSC Cruises

 • MSC Orchestra
 • MSC Magnifica

MSC Musica, the first ship built in this class in 2006, accommodates around 2500 guests. MSC Orchestra is a little larger, with 3200 guests.

The smaller size ships with fewer passengers mean calmer sailing. Choose these ships if you love the itinerary and not if you are looking for a wide range of action-packed activities.

MSC Musica has cruises in the Mediterranean and Greek Isles in the summer. MSC Orchestra, Poesia, and Magnifica sail in Northern Europe and the Norwegian Fjords .

MSC Lirica class ship of MSC Cruises

 • MSC Armonia
 • MSC Sinfonia

The Lirica class of MSC Cruises’ fleet of ships are the oldest and smallest cruise ships of MSC Cruises. The lead ship in this class, MSC Lirica, was built in 2002.

All the ships have been refurbished since then and have a capacity of around 1560.

This smaller capacity means a more intimate sailing experience and the possibility of reaching smaller ports. Facilities include pools, spas, a casino, shopping, and a theater. So a quieter cruise with fewer activities. It’s very much an adult cruising experience.

In 2022, MSC Lirica is sailing from Athens to Jeruselum via Greece. MSC Sinfonia is sailing the Greek Isles from Venice. MSC Opera is sailing the Mediterranean and includes Tunisia as one of the stops. And MSC Armonia is sailing the Mediterranean.

Cruising is a huge industry, so it makes sense that the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) — which started out shipping cargo — got in on the venture in 1988 with the purchase of its first cruise ship. Since then, the company has been steadily growing, adding new ships and destinations to its thriving cruise line.

Although it’s headquartered in Switzerland, you’ll find MSC cruises all over the world, including throughout the United States. Let’s take a look at MSC’s cruises, where they sail and what to expect when you’re aboard.

Aurea is MSC’s top-tier package and includes access to exclusive amenities, as well as additional discounts and dining privileges.

Cabin type s : On MSC ships you’ll find the standard cruise ship cabins, including interior, ocean view, veranda and various types of suites.

Main U.S. routes: MSC has only a handful of departure ports from within the U.S. Most of its routes depart from Miami to the Caribbean and the Bahamas.

MSC cruise destinations

You can find MSC cruises all over the globe, including the Caribbean, Canada, New England, the Mediterranean, the Middle East, Northern Europe, South Africa, South America and Asia. There are also worldwide cruises that sail to several regions around the globe.

MSC's worldwide cruises come in as the longest trips, with itineraries lasting as many as 127 nights. Meanwhile, the cruise line's shortest options include weekend trips to the Bahamas sailing for just two nights.

MSC cruise prices

The reviews of MSC Cruises will likely mention the price of your trip, which is often cheaper than comparable trips on other popular cruise lines. Of course, the total cost will vary based on the trip duration, time of year and what kind of room you select. The least expensive options you’ll find are on short Mediterranean cruises, which can cost as little as $119 per person.

Prices are also affected by the dates that you’re traveling. A three-night cruise to the Bahamas can cost as little as $149 per person, but that same trip can cost up to $349 per person during periods of high demand.

As you’d expect, the most expensive cruises on MSC are the longest. For example, the 127-night World Cruise costs $21,929 per person.

What is the best MSC ship?

There are a total of 23 ships in MSC’s fleet. According to U.S. News, the best MSC ship is the MSC Bellissima. Launched in 2019, the ship boasts a full-sized bowling alley and multiple pools, along with an array of restaurants, a spa and live entertainment. The ranking was calculated using a mix of user reviews and health ratings.

What is the newest MSC ship?

The MSC World Europa, MSC’s newest ship, officially debuted at the end of 2022 in Qatar. This ship features more than 2,600 cabins, 33 restaurants and six swimming pools.

What’s included in an MSC cruise

MSC’s cruise packages are on par with other mid-tier cruise lines. No matter what package you purchase, all food and entertainment is included, as is access to the main parts of the ship. This includes pools, the buffet restaurant and a nightly seated dinner.

If you purchase a higher-end package, you’ll be able to enjoy more amenities. The Fantastica experience, for example, includes free room service delivery for breakfast. The top-tier Aurea package includes complimentary room service for all meals.

Neither Wi-Fi nor specialty drinks are included as part of the base price, but they can be purchased separately. The drink package has a range of options, including non-alcoholic drinks such as soda and different types of alcohol.

Voyager’s Club is the loyalty program for frequent MSC cruise passengers. There are four levels in the program, and each has its own benefits.

Voyagers Club levels

The Voyager Clubs levels are Classic, Silver, Gold and Diamond.

Best benefits: 5% discount on future cruises, discounts on packages.

How to earn: Earn 2,200 to 4,299 points.

Best benefits: $50 onboard credit per person on cruises booked at least nine months before departure, double points for cruises booked more than 12 months in advance.

How to earn: Earn 4,300 to 9,999 points.

How to earn: Earn 10,000+ points.

Best benefits: Complimentary tasting dinner, one free dance lesson, complimentary slippers and bathrobe, priority embarkation and disembarkation.

How to earn Voyager Club points

There are two ways to earn Voyager Club points. First, you’ll earn a set amount of points for taking a cruise — the specific amount will depend on the length of the cruise and the experience level you choose. Second, you’ll earn points for the activities you pre-purchase and for any onboard expenses that you incur.

Wi-Fi is not included in MSC’s basic fare. There are different packages available to those who are sailing which can be purchased before you travel or during your cruise. MSC doesn’t publish its Wi-Fi package pricing online, but for example, you can expect to pay around $270 for a two-device upgraded Wi-Fi package on a seven-day cruise with MSC Seascape.

MSC cruises are not entirely inclusive, though they do provide a lot with your base package. This includes your cabin, food, live entertainment, port stops and coffee, tea and water. They don’t include specialty drinks such as soda or alcohol, nor do they include Wi-Fi or any port excursions you’d like to go on.

MSC Cruises reviews will let you know that MSC allows passengers to add on a drink package to their cruise. The price will vary depending on your actual cruise, as well as the type of package that you choose. There are five types of packages available: Easy, Easy Plus, Premium Extra, Alcohol-free and Minors.

Expect to pay anywhere from $20 to $88 per day for any drink packages that you purchase.

Whether or not you’ll need a COVID vaccine or COVID test while sailing on MSC cruise lines will depend on where you’re going. For cruises leaving from the United States, you don’t need either. However, you will need to provide other personal information, such as your name, address and date of birth.

Innovative energy-saving and water-recycling systems installed on our latest ships

We have great respect for the world’s oceans and while we sail an increasing number of guests across the globe, we continuously aim to reduce our impact on the environment per passenger. Through the use of modern technology and environmentally friendly actions, we are striving to lower the environmental impact of our cruises. From using the cleaner marine fuels, to efficiency-enhancing technology, to our advanced onboard recycling systems, we strongly believe that we have increased responsibility towards the environment. [READ MORE] Therefore, we are continuously working to reduce our impact on the environment, and optimize our cruise itineraries to help reduce fuel consumption. One of the ways to save fuel is by lowering water resistance. MSC Cruises uses an anti-fouling paint on the hulls of all of its ships to prevent hull fouling and substantially reduce drag. Each ship in the MSC Cruises fleet has an environmental officer who is responsible for all environmental aspects on board. All recycling and waste management activities are carefully monitored. MSC Cruises has been forward-looking in the way it has built its ships and ready them for future rules and regulations. Our engines are already certified for the future NOX emissions standards, and are in compliance with latest IMO-MARPOL Annex VI requirement. In addition, some of our ships are equipped with exhaust cleaning systems, to reduce SOx emissions released from the main engine. Our optimized ballast water management system also complies with the latest IMO guidelines aimed at minimizing environmental impact.

Many Americans Don’t Know The World’s Third-Largest Cruise Line – We Sailed MSC to The Caribbean to See What It’s Like

Many Americans Don't Know The World's Third-Largest Cruise Line - We Sailed MSC to The Caribbean to See What It’s Like

More than 35 million travelers will cruise this year, and many of them are sailing with MSC Cruises around the world. Relatively new to the American vacationer, this family-owned line started offering U.S. cruises in 1998 but has become more popular in North America in the past couple of years.

So, this Spring Break, my daughter and I took a 3-night cruise from Cape Canaveral Florida to the Caribbean to see for ourselves why so many Americans are hitting the sea for vacation, and increasingly with MSC Cruises.

So many of our friends and family rave about cruising and choose to vacation this way repeatedly. As a non-cruising family, we’ve been intrigued by all of their stories of exploration and family fun, and were excited to try it out for ourselves.

“Our data shows that the top things that Americans associate with cruising is having fun, being entertained, and relaxing. Being able to experience a new destination with new experiences nearly every day adds to the attractiveness of cruises,” shares Ben Harrell, Managing Director, U.S. at Booking.com. “Not surprisingly, almost one-quarter (22%) of Americans surveyed plan to take a cruise in 2024, which is nearly double the global average, and an increase from 2023.”

Why Are So Many People Cruising?

So many of our friends and family rave about cruising and repeatedly choose to vacation this way. As a non-cruising family, we’ve been intrigued by their stories of exploration and family fun and were excited to try it out for ourselves.

“Our data shows that the top things that Americans associate with cruising is having fun, being entertained, and relaxing. Being able to experience a new destination with new experiences nearly every day adds to the attractiveness of cruises,” shares Ben Harrell, Managing Director, U.S. at Booking.com . “Not surprisingly, almost one-quarter (22%) of Americans surveyed plan to take a cruise in 2024, which is nearly double the global average, and an increase from 2023.”

A OnePoll survey reveals that 60% of surveyed Americans don’t believe there are enough hours in the day to get everything done, let alone plan a vacation. Once you’ve booked your cruise, you can look forward to the fun, not another to-do list of meal and activity reservations. And due to the all-inclusive nature, you won’t have to stress about going over budget either.

“Beyond the strong value of a cruise – with accommodations, meals and entertainment all included in the cost – cruises are also a highly convenient vacation type. Travelers are not only looking to get away, but they’re looking to escape their everyday stresses,” explains Colleen McDaniel, Editor-in-Chief of Cruise Critic. “ Once you’re onboard your cruise, most of the planning and arrangements are handled for you. You don’t have to worry about packing and unpacking, and there’s no need to spend time navigating various forms of transportation. The cruise line takes care of all of that for you.”

A Cruise is an Easy Button in a Busy World

And due to the all-inclusive nature, you won’t have to stress about going over budget either.

“The value of a cruise has never been more evident – especially as travelers are eager to book vacations, but are looking to dodge increasing costs. And that goes for the more budget-friendly mainstream lines, as well as luxury and river lines that include more amenities and offerings in their higher base fares. Whatever your budget, you’re sure to find a cruise to fit your needs and expectations – and the value is so much greater at sea than many land-based options,” continues McDaniel.

When the Cost of Everything Goes Up, Cruises Look Even More Attractive

“The value of a cruise has never been more evident – especially as travelers are eager to book vacations but are looking to dodge increasing costs. And that goes for the more budget-friendly mainstream lines and luxury and river lines that include more amenities and offerings in their higher base fares.
If you’re looking for a family vacation with kids, are budget conscious, but seek higher end experiences, then take a serious look at MSC Cruises.

“It’s a budget-friendly line with competitive fares. Its ships are likely to be among the lowest-priced you’ll see when you’re searching for a cruise. Most of MSC’s ships in the U.S. are relatively new having launched within the past five years, and built specifically for the American market. So while there’s certainly a European flair onboard, you’ll still have all the creature comforts of home,” adds McDaniel.

“MSC has a loyal fanbase, who love the more European vibe they get onboard and the experience as a whole. For those who have never cruised with MSC but have cruised with other cruise lines, you may notice some differences.”

“Notably, you might notice a difference in the kids clubs, which feel very international, and in some of the entertainment, which could include opera or shows in multiple languages. Many announcements onboard are made in multiple languages as well,” she explains.

For a non-luxury brand, we were surprised with the upscale and luxe dining options. Our ship had three main restaurants: a spa restaurant, a Marketplace buffet, and five specialty restaurants.

For non-cruisers like us, it was surprising that the restaurants on board aren’t solely large formal dining rooms and buffets but also exciting offerings like sushi on a conveyor belt, my daughter’s top three experiences from our cruise. Available even to those not on a premium dining plan, you can pay a la carte at the restaurant or enjoy a 45-minute all you can eat meal for $39 a person.

If you enjoy vibrant nightlife, you’ll enjoy a vacation on MSC. One of the ways it stands out from other cruise lines, their nightlife is award-winning.

“There aren’t many lines where, when the clubs and bars wind down, the party continues deep into the night. MSC has mastered the fun nightlife. Whether it’s a 70s theme night with the entertainment team dressed like the Village People, live DJs in the main promenade or a White Night Party with live music on the main pool deck, there is always something going on an MSC ship,” explains Cruise Critic Editors.

As a non-cruising family, I wasn’t familiar with Wave Season, typically from December to March. It is when cruise lines offer some of their best deals of the year. So if you’ve missed Black Friday offers, you still have time to lock-in sale prices at the beginning of each year. Last Wave Season, MSC offered deals worth $1,000 for shorter cruises and $2,000 for 7 days cruises for a family of four.

However, sign up for the cruise line’s email list to be notified of mid-year offers.

When’s the Best Time To Book a MSC Cruise?

However, sign up for the cruise line’s email list to be notified of mid-year offers, as you never know what sale you can catch. In early April, I received some very tempting email offers. We enjoyed ourselves on MSC so much that I just might take them up on one of them and book a longer trip. It looks like we’re cruisers now.

The best cruise lines in the world: 2023 Readers' Choice Awards

By Condé Nast Traveller

Viking River Cruises

The survey for the 2024 Readers' Choice Awards is open, vote now for your favourite places, hotels, airports, cruise lines, travel fixers and more.

Cruises are booming right now, buoyed partly by the popularity of domestic seacations that hauled in first-time sailors. So much so that Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ 34,000-mile world trip for 2024 sold out in just over two hours, while the adults-only Virgin Voyages, which aims to throw cruise stereotypes overboard, rose to first place in Large Ships. And we’ve brought back last year's new category showcasing the expedition cruises – small, often sustainable vessels with a shoal of scientific experts onboard – that follow in the wake of adventurers such as Sir Ernest Shackleton.

These are the best cruise lines in the world, according to the 2023 Readers' Choice Awards .

Royal Caribbean International

With more than 25 cruise ships, Royal Caribbean is one of the largest lines sailing the ocean today. Having the ability to accommodate thousands of guests per ship allows the company to keep rates low. In fact, travelers may find itineraries in popular destinations throughout the Caribbean, Mexico, the Bahamas and the Pacific Coast for around $250 per person.

Holland America Line

Cruisers will find this premium cruise line to be a pretty good bargain, with four-day Caribbean sailings often starting at less than $300 per person, and short voyages along the Pacific Coast coming in around $100 per person. But cutting costs doesn't mean skimping on service; Holland America ships offer individualized attention, free room service and all-inclusive package options.

MSC Cruises

MSC offers sailings from North American ports like Miami, New York City and Orlando, Florida, though the majority of its voyages depart from international locales. But even if you have to fly to a foreign port, you'll save money over a typical land vacation abroad. Mediterranean sailings can start at around $100 per person, and the line offers several deals and money-saving packages.

Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival specializes in budget-friendly fun, offering frequent, significant discounts on already low prices. In fact, itineraries for around $200 per person are the norm. Access to most of the ships' activities won't cost a penny, but keep in mind that some extras (like specialty restaurants, beverages and certain attractions) aren't covered in fares.

Norwegian Cruise Line

With its popular, frequently running Free at Sea program, Norwegian offers travelers discounts on Wi-Fi, excursions, alcohol, airfare and more on top of its already low prices. And, similar to luxury lines, Norwegian ditches steadfast rules like assigned dining times, but costs a fraction of the price.

Cunard Line

While you may not expect to find a more opulent line like Cunard on this list, the cruise provider has a surprising number of relatively reasonable fares for upcoming sailings. Travelers can fully enjoy the line's old-world elegance knowing that room service, onboard activities and most dining options are included in the base price.

Costa Cruises

A member of the Carnival family, Costa Cruises is primarily based in Europe. The fleet offers lower rates than its competitors, particularly for its Mediterranean itineraries (think: fares starting at less than $100 per person). MSC Cruises ships from newest to oldest — a complete list

Gene Sloan

What's the newest MSC Cruises ship? It can be hard to keep track, as MSC Cruises has been rolling out new cruise ships in quick succession over the past few years. However, it's a good thing to know if you're in the market for an MSC Cruises voyage.

The newest MSC Cruises ship is typically also the MSC Cruises ship with the most bells and whistles and the most up-to-date cabins, restaurants, bars and attractions. It's what you want if you want the very latest and greatest in a vessel for your MSC Cruises vacation.

Right now, the newest MSC Cruises ship is MSC Euribia . It just debuted in June. Although it's barely a couple of months old, it'll soon be supplanted as the newest MSC Cruises vessel by another new MSC Cruises ship, MSC World America , which is scheduled to begin sailing in April 2025.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Other relatively new MSC Cruises ships include MSC World Europa, MSC Seascape , MSC Seashore and MSC Virtuoso. All began sailing in just the last three years.

In all, MSC Cruises operates 22 cruise vessels — up from 17 in 2020. On average, the line comes out without about one new ship a year, though its rollout of ships has been rapid the past few years. MSC Cruises typically keeps vessels in its fleet for around 20 to 25 years before retiring them from the fleet. The oldest MSC Cruises ship, MSC Armonia, is 22 years old.

In general, the newest MSC Cruises ships are far bigger and much more amenity-packed than its older ships. If you crave a lot of activities in an MSC Cruises cruise vacation, you'll want to stick to vessels built in the last decade or so.

What is the newest MSC Cruises ship?

The newest MSC Cruises ship is MSC Euribia. As noted above, it just debuted in June, and it's currently sailing in Europe.

Measuring 184,011 gross tons, MSC Euribia is one of the biggest cruise ships in the world — only 10 cruise vessels are bigger. However, it's not the biggest MSC Cruises ship. That's the almost-as-new MSC World Europa, which debuted in December 2022. At 215,863 gross tons, MSC World Europa is the sixth-largest cruise ship in the world.

What is the oldest MSC Cruises ship?

The oldest MSC Cruises ship is MSC Armonia. Unveiled in 2001, it's not just the oldest MSC Cruises ship but one of the smallest MSC Cruises ships, too — far smaller than the newest MSC Cruises vessels. Measuring just 65,542 gross tons, it's just a third the size of the largest MSC Cruises ship (MSC World Europa) and has far fewer venues.

MSC Armonia and three other similar sisters in the MSC Cruises fleet (known as the Lirica class of ships) don't have the big water parks that are common on newer MSC Cruises ships. For the most part, their top decks are lined with pools, whirlpools and sunning areas, as is typical for ships built in the early 2000s.

MSC Armonia and its sister vessels (MSC Sinfonia, MSC Lirica and MSC Opera) also have fewer restaurants, bars and lounges than newer MSC Cruises ships.

What new MSC Cruises ships are coming?

MSC Cruises currently has three new cruise ships on order — all sister vessels to the line's new MSC World Europa. The first to arrive will be MSC World America in 2025, which is scheduled to be deployed in Florida . Two more of the so-called World-class vessels are scheduled for completion in 2026 and 2027.

The World-class vessels are being built at the giant Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in St. Nazaire, France.

Related: The best destinations you can visit on an MSC Cruises ship

In addition to the above, MSC Group — the line's parent company — has announced plans for yet another class of big MSC Cruises ships to start arriving later this decade, though few details have been released. MSC Group is also developing a series of small luxury vessels that'll operate under a separate brand to be called Explora Journeys.

What is the newest MSC Cruises ship available for booking?

MSC World America is the newest MSC Cruises ship that you can book right now. While the ship isn't yet sailing, its initial sailings scheduled for April 2025 already are on sale, as are future sailings through October 2025. The two other MSC Cruises ships on order for delivery in 2026 and 2027 have yet to open for bookings.

What is the newest class of MSC Cruises ships?

The World class is the newest class of MSC Cruises ships. It'll be made up of at least four vessels, only the first of which (MSC World Europa) is already sailing.

At 215,863 gross tons, MSC World Europa is the biggest MSC Cruises ship ever built and the sixth biggest cruise ship in the world from any line. The next three ships in the series will be of a similar size.

Unveiled in the final days of 2022 (so close to year's end that we considered it a new vessel for 2023 when we listed the year's most exciting new ships ), MSC World Europa can hold up to 6,762 passengers — almost as many as can fit on Royal Caribbean's giant Oasis-class vessels — the world's largest cruise ships.

What's the difference between newer and older MSC Cruises ships?

Newer MSC Cruises ships are generally bigger than older MSC Cruises ships — sometimes much bigger. As a result, they have room for a lot more onboard venues and attractions than the line's older vessels.

The new MSC World Europa, for instance, has a whopping six pools and 14 hot tubs, making it one of the most pool-covered ships at sea. The watery offerings also include an aquapark with multiple waterslides that integrate virtual reality technology. There is also a family sun deck.

In addition, MSC World Europa has a stunning array of 13 dining venues, including the new-for-the-line Chef's Garden Kitchen (an outlet focused on microgreens) and La Pescaderia, a traditional seafood grill with alfresco seating. In a twist, the ship has three separate buffet restaurants, each with its own ambience. You'll also find lots of venues for entertainment and pampering on the ship, including a large casino and an equally large spa.

In short, the new MSC World Europa is like a giant floating version of the megaresorts you find in the Orlando area or Las Vegas, and it appeals to people who like a megaresort experience.

Related: The ultimate guide to MSC Cruises

The oldest ships in the MSC Cruises are less than a third the size of the newest MSC Cruises ships and lack many of the above features. They have a much more intimate feel, at least in the pantheon of relatively big, mass-market ships, and they hold far fewer people. While World-class ships are being built to hold nearly 7,000 passengers with every berth full, the line's four oldest vessels (known as the Lirica class) are only designed to carry about 2,000 passengers at maximum occupancy.

That makes them a good choice for someone who wants to try MSC Cruises but isn't eager to travel with huge crowds. The oldest ships in the MSC Cruises fleet thus appeal to a subset of MSC Cruises fans who prefer more intimacy in a cruise vessel and don't mind giving up some onboard amenities to get it. They are also often less expensive to sail on, on a per-day basis.

Related: Don't miss out on these MSC Cruises loyalty perks

In addition, because of their size, the oldest ships at MSC Cruises are able to operate itineraries to places that aren't as easy for big ships to visit. Not all ports in the world can handle a ship the size of MSC World Europa.

Note that all MSC Cruises ships are renovated and upgraded on a regular schedule every few years, so even the oldest MSC Cruises vessels have newer carpeting, updated furniture, modern decor in cabins and other updates. In many cases, they also have had entire eateries and bars renovated over the years with concepts that first debuted on newer vessels.

MSC Cruises vs Carnival Cruises

Tuesday, April 23rd

2024 Cruise Line Reviews

MSC Cruises Review

 • MSC Cruises
 • Best for budget-friendly, Mediterranean-themed, large-ship cruising in the Caribbean, Europe, and Mediterranean
 • 23 ships in the fleet
 • Private island in the Bahamas on some itineraries

MSC Cruises is an Italian-themed, family-oriented cruise line with a fleet of 23 ships that sail to destinations worldwide. They offer a wide range of itineraries, from short Caribbean cruises to longer world cruises. Caribbean sailings are one of their specialties, with budget-friendly fares often starting at $139 per person for a three-night Bahamas cruise. However, guests should be aware of additional costs for gratuities, drinks, and dining packages, and even for basics like choosing the stateroom or dining room seating time. While the low initial fares may seem like a bargain, fees for "extras" can add up quickly, so it's worth comparing MSC to other cruise lines before booking your sailing.

Carnival Cruises Review

 • Carnival Cruises
 • Best for a party atmosphere and cruising on a budget
 • Good for US port departures, with additional destinations in Europe

Carnival Cruise Line is a popular and affordable American cruise line that operates 24 ships sailing to destinations all over the world, catering to families, couples, and groups of friends. The defining characteristic of Carnival is its focus on fun and entertainment, all for less money than its rivals in the industry. However, Carnival cruises have a party atmosphere - great for some adults, not as desirable for cruising with children - and lower safety rankings, with several incidents involving Carnival ships, including fires, power outages, and mechanical failures. You'll get more for your money, and a better overall onboard experience, with a higher-ranked cruise line.

Cruise ships travel all over the world, but some cruise lines may not have destinations available where you're hoping to go. You should also consider the size of the ship: larger ships offer more amenities, but smaller ships can access ports that bigger ships can't.

Speaking of amenities, make sure you understand what you'll get as part of your fare and which extras will come with an additional cost. For example, most cruises offer drink packages for alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, but a few have drink stations where you can get complimentary lemonade, coffee and tea. Other amenities that might be important to you are Wi-Fi, spa services, babysitting, fitness classes, and upgraded dining experiences. You can usually get a decent discount if you sign up for an amenities package before you sail, so keep an eye out for promotions in the months leading up to your sailing.

When you take a cruise, it's almost always expected that you'll tip the crew members who have attended to your needs while onboard: your cabin steward ( who probably leaves your towels folded into fun shapes every night ), your servers at your nightly meals, and the head waiter. Cruise lines have a recommended gratuity to cover all three of those staff members, usually $15-$20 per traveler, per day; the total gratuity amount may be charged automatically to your account, or you may be given envelopes to make cash payments.

While it usually isn't mandatory to pay those gratuities - you can ask to have them removed if they're applied automatically, especially if you've received poor service - it's typically considered in poor taste not to tip at the suggested levels (because crew members' salaries, much like servers at your local restaurant, are based on the expectation of tips paid by guests). And, if you receive service that goes above and beyond, adding to the recommended gratuity is always appreciated. Be aware that tips for bartenders, poolside servers, and professional services provided in the spa or elsewhere are not included in the daily suggested gratuity and may be charged automatically at the time of service.

Now that you have a good overview of the cruising experience, which cruise line should you choose? Beyond the points we already covered, here are a few additional criteria that might make it easier to pick:

 • Embarkation port. You could get a great deal on a cruise, but what will it cost you to get to the port? That could involve airfare, an overnight stay or two in a nearby hotel (so that you're less likely to be affected by travel delays), and transportation from the airport or hotel to the port. This is especially true if you're taking a cruise that departs from an international destination.
 • Perks for repeat cruisers. Like frequent flyer programs on airlines, most cruise lines offer benefits the more you sail. If you find yourself absolutely loving cruise vacations, it can be advantageous to put all of your eggs in one basket, so to speak. Rewards programs can include casino benefits, complimentary meals at the upgraded dining experiences, exclusive sail-away parties with free cocktails and tchotchkes, early-access booking on future cruises, and much more.
 • Reputation. It's a really smart idea to see what other travelers have said about their overall experience with a cruise line before booking your trip. The ads on TV may make that private island look amazing, but someone who's been there might point out that you'll pay extra to get on that waterslide. Or, previous cruisers could tell you that despite having several formal nights on the schedule, a particular cruise line has no problem with people showing up to dinner in flip-flops and swimsuit coverups. Find out if the cruise line you're considering lines up in reality with what they advertise.

Here at Top Consumer Reviews, cruising is one of our favorite ways to travel and experience new things. And with so many different cruise lines to choose from, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. But, don't worry: take a look at our in-depth analysis of today's most popular options, find the one that's the best match for your vacation ideas and your travel party, and book that trip you've been dreaming of. Bon voyage!

Balcony staterooms on Norwegian Prima feature a Scandinavian color palette with some modern design ... [+] touches.

Choosing your cruise ship cabin or stateroom is an essential part of planning a dream cruise vacation. The right accommodation can enhance your cruise experience, providing you with a comfortable retreat after a day of adventure, but some choices may turn out to be an expensive mistake.

Here’s how to select the best cruise ship cabin for your needs, whether you're seeking breathtaking views, peace and quiet, convenience, or the best value.

Cruise Ship Cabin Grades

From motel-sized inside cabins to luxurious suites that rival the most expensive land-based hotels, cruise ships offer a range of accommodation grades to suit all preferences and budgets:

Interior Cabins : The most budget-friendly option, these cabins are located inside the ship and have no windows. Although they are often just as spacious as oceanview cabins, the lack of natural light may be off-putting to some.

Oceanview Cabins : Offering a window or porthole, these cabins provide natural light and views of the ocean or ports, a good middle-ground option. On modern ships, such cabins will likely be located towards the bottom of the ship, as balcony cabins now dominate ship exteriors.

Balcony Cabins : These cabins feature private balconies allowing direct access to ocean breezes and private views. These cabins are perfect for those who prefer to enjoy the scenery privately.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

Some ships offer cabins with direct access to the promenade deck, while the largest ships, including MSC World Europa , offer balconies overlooking an internal courtyard or promenade.

The newest, largest cruise ships such as Royal Caribbean's 'Icon of the Seas' offer a huge range of ... [+] cabin grades and locations.

Suites : The most spacious and luxurious option, suites often come with extra amenities and services, ideal for travelers looking for a premium experience. Separate bedrooms, wraparound balconies, and even butler service are some common features of cruise ship suites.

Pioneered by Norwegian Cruise Line, solo traveler cabins are becoming more common across the industry. Whereas for many years solo cabins were usually interior grade, there are now oceanview and even balcony cabins available for solo travelers on some lines.

Consider The Location

Perhaps more so than the accommodation grade, the cabin location can significantly impact your cruise experience.

Top-to-bottom : Cabins on lower decks are usually cheaper with the added benefit of experiencing less movement in rough seas.

However, depending on the size of the ship, they could be farther from entertainment and dining areas. On big ships, there may be 10 or even more flights of stairs between your cabin and the pool, sun deck, buffet, and other amenities found at the top of the ship. There will be elevators, of course, but you should expect queues at busy times.

Cabins on higher decks will provide better views from balconies and suites, and good access to many of the ship’s amenities, but passengers may feel the ship's movement more. You may also hear more noise from outdoor activities on the pool deck.

Cabins on middle floors offer the best combination of access to facilities and less movement in the event of rough seas.

Front-to-back : Just as important as the deck number is the cabin’s location between the ship’s front and rear.

Cabins located at the very front and very back of the ship will experience significantly more movement in the event of rough seas, so choose a cabin towards the middle of the ship if you’re facing multiple sea days or sailing off-season.

Inside cabins on the 'P&O Arvia' cruise ship are a good value accommodation option. They can be ... [+] configured with a double or twin beds.

It’s also worth knowing that most cruise ships feature main dining venues at the rear and the main theater at the front.

The Budget Accommodation Choice

When choosing a cabin, start with understanding your budget. Decide how much you’re willing to spend and remember that while the cabin is important, you’ll also want to budget for on-board activities, excursions, beverages, and other expenses.

If budget matters above all else, an interior cabin is a wise choice. You could also save money by booking a saver fare offered by some cruise lines.

These fares typically don't allow you to select your cabin in advance. This will likely result in you being allocated a cabin at the front or back of the ship, but it will save you money.

Questions To Ask Yourself

If you have more flexibility in your budget, consider what’s important to you in accommodation. If you plan to spend a lot of time in your cabin, you might value a balcony or a spacious room more. Families might look for cabins with connecting doors or extra bed options.

Before booking, read reviews of the ship and specific cabins on websites such as Cruise Critic or watching YouTube reviews. Previous travelers can offer invaluable insight into noise levels, views, and overall satisfaction.

Examine the ship’s layout to see where your cabin is in relation to key areas like the lido deck, dining rooms, and entertainment venues. Consider potential noise from above or below your cabin, especially if it’s immediately above or below a dance floor, crew area, or near the pool.

Your cruise itinerary might also influence your choice of accommodation. For scenic cruises, such as those in Alaska or the Norwegian fjords , a balcony might be worth the splurge to enjoy the magnificent views in relative peace. A balcony breakfast while sailing along a fjord will be an experience to remember.

On the other hand, if you plan to spend most of your time exploring ports and partaking in onboard activities, the type and location of cabin might be of less importance.
