How To Get To Bilbao From The Cruise Port?

Bilbao has a modern cruise port, called Getxo Cruise Port. This is located about 13 kilometres (8 miles) from the city centre. Many cruise lines offer a shuttle bus. However if there are several transportation options available to get from the cruise port to Bilbao: 

Taxi: 

Taxis are available at the cruise port and can take you directly to Bilbao. The journey takes about 20-25 minutes, depending on traffic, and costs around 25-35 euros.

Public Bus:

There is a public bus service, called Bizkaibus, that runs from the cruise port to Bilbao. The A3247 bus line connects the cruise port with the city center and stops at several locations along the way, including the Guggenheim Museum. The journey takes about 45-60 minutes, depending on traffic, and the ticket costs around 1.75 euros.

Bilbao cruise port is located in Getxo, a town in the Bay of Biscay nestled along the Estuary of Bilbao (Ria de Bilbao), approximately 15 km/9.5 miles or a 20-25 minute drive north of Bilbao city center.

Bilbao cruise terminal consists of 3 berths that can accommodate large cruise ships and features a modern, 2-story terminal building where you can find a tourist information desk, free wi-fi, and embarkation/disembarkation facilities such as check-in counters and luggage area.

Port Bilbao is the largest cargo port and one of the busiest ones in Spain. It is also an important ferry port that serves the city of Portsmouth, UK via Brittany Ferries. When your ship docks in Bilbao port, you can either choose to go to Bilbao or explore the beautiful town of Getxo and surrounding areas.

How to Get from the Port of Bilbao (Getxo) to Bilbao City Center?

There are several ways to get from Getxo to Bilbao:

• Shuttle Bus – The majority of the cruise lines provide shuttle bus service from the port of Bilbao to Plaza Moyúa (Plaza de Don Federico Moyúa) in Bilbao city center. The ride takes around 25 minutes one way. Plaza Moyúa is located a 15-minute walk from Casco Viejo (Old Town) and a 10-minute walk (800 meters) from the Guggenheim Museum. The shuttle bus is available for a fee, usually 10-15€ per person round-trip.
• Metro – Bilbao boasts an excellent metro connection from Getxo to Bilbao (Line 1, from Plentzia to Etxebarri). The cruise terminal port authority provides a free shuttle service from the cruise terminal to Getxo city center with stops at Areeta and Algorta train stations that run on the same Line 1 . The shuttle buses run every 20 minutes. Alternatively, it takes around 30-35 minutes to walk from the cruise terminal to reach these train stations (Algorta is north of the terminal and Areeta is to the south). If you decide to walk to the nearest train station, you can also catch the train at Neguri or Gobela metro stations located a 20-25 minute walk from the Bilbao cruise terminal.
• Metro Line 1 runs from Plentzia (Getxo) to Etxebarri town and serves Bilbao city center. To get to the Guggenheim Museum, you should get off at Moyúa metro station (Plaza de Don Federico Moyúa) and if you want to go to the Old Town (Casco Viejo), you can get off one or two stations later ( Abando train station and Zazpikaleak/Casco Viejo train station). The train ride from Getxo to Bilbao downtown takes around 20-25 minutes one way and trains run every 5 minutes.

• Taxi – Taxis are available outside the cruise terminal and the ride to Bilbao takes around 25-30 minutes one way.
• Shore Excursion – Cruise lines and independent tour operators offer a great variety of shore excursions to the Bilbao city center and the Guggenheim Museum. If you want to be on the safe side and have a professional guide with you, a shore excursion is always the best option.

Getting Around Bilbao Port

• The currency in Spain is EURO (€). Credit cards and local currency are widely accepted. ATMs are available in the cities of Getxo and Bilbao, as well as on most cruise ships.
• For the best shopping in Bilbao , head to the Plaza de Don Federico Moyúa (Moyúa metro station) where you’ll find a large number of shops, department stores, cafes and restaurants. Casco Viejo (Bilbao old town) located a 15-minute walk from Don Federico Moyúa Square is another great shopping location.
• The majority of shops are closed from 13:30 through 16:00/16:30 due to the siesta time in Spain . This normally doesn’t apply to department stores and shopping malls. Museums and attractions are usually closed on Mondays.

If you decide to stay in Getxo where your cruise ship docks, there is a wide variety of things to do and see. Getxo is renowned for its legendary  Vizcaya Bridge (Bizkaia Bridge), a massive hanging bridge that connects the two banks of the Nervion Estuary between the towns of Portugalete and Getxo.

Vizcaya Bridge is the oldest transporter bridge in the world dating from 1893 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2006. It is one of the most iconic structures in Bilbao representing the industrial era.

The bridge can be crossed via a pedestrian walkway that can be reached in the 50-meter high panoramic lift. Once you’re up, you’ll admire the most amazing views of the Bilbao port, neighboring mountains, Portugalete and Getxo. The general admission fee to the walkway is 10€.

Vizcaya Bridge can also be crossed on the gondola hanging from a 25-meter-long, 36-wheel carriage that moves along the rails from one end to another. As your cruise ship will be docked in Getxo, you can choose to spend a day exploring the town’s Old fishing port (Puerto Viejo), walk along the waterfront promenade overlooking Ereaga beach , enjoy a coffee with a view over the town’s marina, or discover the town’s landmarks.

If you are looking for scenic views, La Galea cliffs offer a real treat for the eye with dramatic cliffs, inlets, beautiful beaches and landmarks such as Aixerrota Windmill, La Galea Fort and Faro La Galea Lighthouse. 2. Guggenheim Museum

Guggenheim Museum is the icon of Bilbao and home to an outstanding collection of the 20th and 21st centuries’ art masterpieces.

Nestled on the banks of the Nervión River, this architectural wonder consists of a massive complex of interconnected buildings made of silver titanium and glass, of shapes representing the sea and the city’s maritime tradition.

Guggenheim Museum was designed by Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry and was officially opened in 1997.

The two most famous sculptures of Guggenheim are Jeff Koons’ 12-meter tall “Puppy”, entirely covered with flowers and plants, guarding the entrance to the museum, and Louise Bourgois’s “Maman”, a 10-meter tall sculpture of a spider made of marble and stainless steel.

The museum consists of multiple floors and takes a few hours to visit. You will also find a tourist information desk and two restaurants where you can go for lunch or snacks.

It is dedicated to Saint James the Great ( Santiago in Spanish), the patron saint of Bilbao since 1643, and features a remarkable interior with a rib vaulted ceiling, stained glass windows and arches. You can visit the interior and the courtyard for a small fee (the audioguide and the visit to the Church of Saint Anthony the Great are included in the price).

Another church in the old town to visit is the Church of San Nicolás which dates from the 18th century and features a beautiful Baroque facade.

Casco Viejo is also known as Las Siete Calles (“Seven Streets” or “ Zazpikaleak”  in Basque) after the seven streets that form the heart of the old town. Here, you’ll find  Plaza Nueva (also known as Plaza Barria), the neoclassical square filled with tapas bars, cafes and restaurants, as well as numerous narrow old streets packed with taverns and shops.

If you look for authentic food and local experience, head to La Ribera Market , the main food market in Bilbao where you can taste the “pintxos”, small finger food served at bars and taverns, a specialty of Basque cuisine.

4. Bilbao Museums

Besides Guggenheim, Bilbao has a few other amazing museums that are within walking distance from Casco Viejo and the city center.

• Bilbao Maritime Museum (Itsasmuseum Bilbao) – It is located a 15-minute walk along the Nervión riverside walkway from Guggenheim, in the former Eukalduna shipyards. The museum is dedicated to shipbuilding, maritime culture and the history of maritime activity on the Ría de Bilbao and its port.
• Museum of Fine Arts of Bilbao – It is situated a 5-minute walk from Guggenheim and a 10-minute walk from Maritime Museum. Fine Arts Museum is the second-largest museum in the Basque Country after Guggenheim and features outstanding works by Basque artists, Goya, Velasquez, Picasso, El Greco and other renowned Spanish and international artists.
• Archaeological Museum of Bilbao (Arkeologi Museoa) – A small, 2-story archeological museum showcases the history of Bizkaia through collections of artifacts, objects and exhibitions. It is located in Casco Viejo, only a few minutes’ walk from Plaza Nueva.
• Basque Museum (Museo Arqueológico, Etnográfico e Histórico Vasco) – Located right across Arkeologi Museoa in Casco Viejo, this unique museum is housed in the 17th-century building that was the Church and College of San Andrés de la Compañía de Jesús. The museum boasts an impressive collection of more than 20.000 objects and artifacts that illustrate the archeology of Vizcaya and the ethnohistory of the Basque Country.

5. Artxanda Cable Car

To enjoy spectacular panoramic views of Bilbao, head to the Funicular de Artxanda (Artxandako funikularra), situated on the opposite side of the Nervión River from the Guggenheim Museum, on Mount Artxanda.

The old funicular was opened in 1915 and is one of the major tourist attractions that allows visitors to enjoy incredible panoramic views and experience Bilbao from a different perspective. At the top, you can enjoy a beautiful park, a few restaurants, a hotel and a sports complex.

6. San Sebastián

San Sebastián is a beautiful resort city located 109 km/69 miles (a 1-hour 20-minute drive) east of the port of Bilbao.

Tucked in the picturesque La Concha Bay (Bahía De La Concha), this coastal town is known for its gorgeous sandy beaches, upscale Michelin-star restaurants, tapas and pintxos bars, beautiful Old Town (Casco Viejo de San Sebastián), charming marina and rich historic and cultural heritage.

While there, you can enjoy a walk along a beautiful seafront promenade overlooking the two most popular beaches, Beach of la Concha and Ondarreta Beach , take a coffee in the picturesque town marina ( Puerto de San Sebastián ), wander around the streets of the old town ( Casco Viejo ), visit Motako Gaztelua-Castillo de la Mota , a medieval castle dating from the 12th century offering incredible views of the bay, or indulge in the delicious Basque Country specialties.

7. Guernica

Located 40 km/25 miles (a 40-minute drive) east of the Bilbao port, you can visit the historic town of Guernica, famous for the aerial bombing by the Nazis during the Spanish Civil War on April 26, 1937.

Guernica’s tragic events inspired Pablo Picasso’s painting “Guernica” where the famous artist depicted the suffering and tragic destiny of the town and civilians.

The majority of Guernica’s architecture was destroyed in the bombing, however, the Biscayan Assembly House and the Guernica Tree (Gernikako Arbola) survived. Both landmarks offer an insight into the history of the Basque people and recent historical events, such as the Basque independence movement.

In the town, you can also visit the beautiful Parque de Los pueblos de Europa , the Peace Museum (Museo de la Paz de Guernica), Euskal Herria History Museum (Euskal Herria Museoa) and a few other monuments and attractions. The town is relatively small and everything can be visited on foot.

8. Rioja Wine Tasting

While in Bilbao, make sure you taste the authentic local food and exquisite wines from the La Rioja wine region. La Rioja is a province and autonomous community in the north of the Iberian Peninsula south of Bilbao, renowned for its local wine industry.

This beautiful winemaking region is dotted with vineyards and numerous wineries where you can taste Spain’s premium Rioja wine.

Some of these wineries boast outstanding architecture such as the prestigious Marqués de Riscal chateau (Bodega de Los Herederos del Marqués de Riscal) and winery, or Bodegas Ysios .

Besides excellent wines, the region offers beautiful natural sceneries, historic towns and wine estates boasting incredible architecture. Depending on where you want to go, it takes at least a 1-hour 30-minute drive to get to the La Rioja wine region and wineries. If you choose to go, probably the smartest idea would be to book a private tour.

Port of Bilbao to Welcome 20 Cruise Ships in September

The Port of Bilbao will welcome 20 cruise ships in September, out of 80 expected to arrive in 2023.

The month began with a maiden call of Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Dream.

The MSC Fantasia also called in Bilbao, arriving at the port on September 6.

At the same, Windstar Cruises’ Star Legend was in port. The ship, which already called at Bilbao last May, will spent the night at the port before continuing its voyage the following day.

On September 7, the Norwegian Gem embarked on a cruise that starts and finishes in Getxo. The itinerary will take guests to explore cities in Northern Europe, such as Bordeaux, Amsterdam, London, Brussels, Paris, Lisbon, Vigo and A Coruña, before returning to Getxo on September 19.

The ship will depart again on the same day, this time for Civitavecchia in Rome, where it is expected to arrive on October 1 after calling at Lisbon, Portimao, Cadiz, Gibraltar, Motril, Ibiza, Palma, Saint Tropez and La Spezia.

Among the ships calling at Getxo this September are the Norwegian Getaway, the Seven Seas Voyager, the Azamara Journey and the Seven Seas Splendor.

Sailing On The Disney Dream To Bilbao

This summer the Disney Dream headed to Europe for the very first time. Our very first Disney Cruise experience was on the Disney Dream in 2017. We booked a four-night Bahamian cruise, which didn’t go to plan as Ethan became ill with tonsillitis on our first night. So when we knew the Disney Dream was visiting Europe, we thought it would finally give us the perfect opportunity to explore the ship. We booked the Disney Dream to Bilbao cruise as being a four-night cruise it suited our budget. I would have loved to have sailed to Norway again but the seven-night cruise was out of our price range.

What Was It Like To Sail On The Disney Dream To Bilbao?

Cruising is now back to normal and all COVID restrictions have been lifted. As this was a cruise in the summer holidays and one of the more affordable ones we knew it would be busy. It was sailing at capacity so we knew the experience would be very different from our last seacation cruise . Our last cruise was also on the Disney Magic and the Disney Dream holds more people which would mean areas would be busier.

Queueing for characters was also manic on this cruise. Everyone wanted to meet them which made the queues long. So we didn’t queue to meet many. We were already prepared for this as it had been mentioned in Facebook groups. It wouldn’t have been fair to make Ethan queue for so long. And to be honest there is so much to do on the ship I wouldn’t want to waste time queueing.

What Did We Do on The Disney Dream?

We didn’t book any extra activities on this cruise. The only thing we did book was the princess gathering . This is a pre-bookable character meet and greet and we got the chance to meet Ariel, Tiana, Belle and Cinderella.

We experienced all of the main dining rotation restaurants. They are very different from the restaurants on the Disney Magic. On that ship two out of the three restaurants put on a show at dinner. On the Dream, it is only Animator’s Palate that has a dinner show. As we were only on a four-night cruise we only got to experience talking to Crush and not the extra animation show. Little E was lucky enough to be chosen to chat with Crush.

We watched all the theatre shows. I was very excited to get the chance to watch Beauty and the Beast. It is my favourite Disney film and this production was based on the live-action film. It was amazing and I might have cried at points!

We went to the cinema. There were so many films we wanted to watch on this sailing but we just couldn’t fit them all in. We were able to watch Elemental and half of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. We wanted to watch Haunted Mansion but got our timings wrong and missed the start. This was a good thing as after now watching the film on Disney Plus I know the children wouldn’t have liked it.

We had pool days! Making sure that the children had time to spend at the pool was a priority for us on this cruise. They normally have time in the pool but it is in between different activities. So they get an hour here and there. On this cruise, they had two full days where we sat on the top deck and they had fun in the pools.

Did We Experience Any ‘Firsts’ On The Disney Dream?

Because we didn’t really get to experience the Disney Dream on our first sailing there were many firsts for us on this trip. Our main highlights were

Enjoying Pirate Night

We have never really experienced a pirate night before. The Northern Europe sailings have a Frozen theme but this sailing had a Pirates In The Caribbean theme. This meant we got to watch the pirate show which looks like it has changed a lot since we were researching our very first Disney Cruise.

Watching Fireworks At Sea

We finally got to see the fireworks at sea! This is normally part of the pirate celebrations but our fireworks were to celebrate Disney Cruise Lines’s 25th Anniversary. I love Disney fireworks so this was a must-do for us on this sailing.

Riding The AquaDuck

We have been on the AquaDuck before but Little E was a toddler on our last Dream sailing so she got to ride it for the very first time on this sailing. She went on quite a few times, with us and with friends she made on the cruise. It was faster than I remember but the water was still as cold.

Eating Sweet Treats From Vanellope’s

We treated ourselves to some cakes from Vanellope’s. We wanted to try some of the ice cream but we just ran out of time and space in our stomachs.

Celebrating Disney Cruise Lines’s 25th Anniversary

This year Disney Cruise Line celebrated its 25th Anniversary. This meant the characters got new outfits to wear and the ship was dressed in 25th Anniversary colours.

We didn’t know these celebrations would be taking place until after we booked our cruise to Bilbao. It was nice that we got to experience them and we were even left a special print in our cabin to celebrate this milestone.

Did The Children Go To The Kids Clubs?

On this cruise, Ethan was too old for the Oceaneer clubs. He loves these clubs so I was a little worried that he would be bored in the evenings. Ethan could go to the Edge club but I wasn’t sure it would suit his needs. He did go in for one session and they were really good with him but he wasn’t bothered about going in again after that.

Little E isn’t a big fan of the clubs. This always surprises me as I would have loved this club as a kid. She did go in them during our seacation sailing but she missed having Ethan with her this time. She spent a few hours there and made some friends but she preferred being with us or in the pool.

Did We Get Off The Dream In Bilbao?

I did look into the tours offered in Bilbao and some sparked my interest. The thing that put me off was that transfers were needed to get into Bilbao from the port. Ethan can get quite distressed if he doesn’t know what’s coming next. I didn’t think a tour with an hour coach transfer would be fair on him or us. So we decided that it would be best to stay on the ship and let the children have a pool day.

Darren did get off the ship to take some photos of her in the Bilbao port whilst we were on the top deck enjoying the warm weather.

What Was It Like Sailing Through The Bay of Biscay?

I must admit I was really worried about sailing through the Bay of Biscay. It is known for its rough waters and I do suffer from seasickness. I did suffer a bit on this cruise but it wasn’t the water that was rough. It was quite windy during our trip which caused the ship to rock. When we sailed home you could see the water moving in the pool. Not that many people noticed the movements but I do find I’m quite sensitive to it.

Did We Enjoy Our Four-Night Sailing To Bilbao On The Disney Dream?

This Disney Cruise was a very different experience from the others we have been on. The ship was at capacity and there were lots of first-time cruisers all wanting to make the most of their trip. We have only ever seen long queues for characters on Disney cruises when they bring rare characters out. Every character on this cruise had a long queue. This did mean we had to adjust our expectations for our cruise experience but we still had a great time.

The children asked as soon as we got off when can we get back on. From this experience, we have decided that if we sail from the UK again we would want to book a seven-night cruise. Our Norway cruise holds such a special place in our hearts and I think the seven-night sailing gave us enough time to explore the ship without any stress.

Port Bilbao cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Bilbao, Spain Biscay Basque Country. Bilbao is a major port (ferry and cargo) and Spain's Biscay Province's capital city, with population around 350,000 (metro around 1,04 million). The city is also part of Spain's Basque Country region and located near the border with France. By population, the city is ranked Spain's 10th-largest, while Greater Bilbao (metropolis) is ranked Spain's 5th-largest.

The Port is at Biscay Bay, while the city's downtown is approx 16 km (10 mi) to the southeast. In 2016, the cruise port reported a 19% increase in ship calls over 2015 (51 calls) and a total of 85071 tourists (21% increase over 2015).

Established in the 14th century as a settlement of ironworkers and mariners, in the following centuries, the town prospered in trading (export of wool and iron goods) including with Spain's American colonies. Following the heavy industrialization in the late-19th-early-20th-centuries, the metropolis became Spain's second-most industrialized (after Barcelona), growing in population and territory via mergers with neighboring municipalities.

Port Bilbao

Port Bilbao (aka Superpuerto, locode ESBIO) is located on Bilbao Abra Bay, along Ria de Bilbao. Port's main facilities are in the municipalities Santurtzi and Zierbena, located approx 15 km (9 mi) to the west.

The seaport complex covers a land area of approx 3 km2 (773 acres / 313 hectares) and water area approx 17 km2 (4186 acres / 1694 hectares). Bilbao Harbor's waterfront has a length of 17 km (11 mi).

As a cargo port, Bilbao is ranked Spain's largest and 4th-busiest (following Algeciras , Barcelona , Valencia ). On March 27, 2011, the French shipping company BRITTANY FERRIES started a weekly scheduled service on the route Portsmouth -Bilbao (via Roscoff France ) with the Cap Finistere ferry .

For FY2017, Port Bilbao reported a 7% shipping traffic growth (or an increase of 2,2 million tons over FY2016) to a total traffic volume (excluding local shipping and supplies) 34,2 million tons.

The main increases were of liquid bulk cargoes, natural gas (+811,000 tons), gasoil (+470,000 tons), crude oil (+277,000 tons). The main dry cargo increases were scrap iron (+120,000 tons), iron and steel products (+101,000 tons), other minerals (+94,000 tons).

Container shipping traffic in 2017 reached 604,870 TEU-containers, or 1,37% increase over 2016. The growth in reefers (refrigerated containers) was 2%. A total of 5514 units were shipped as "heavy load" or "project cargo" due to their great weight or dimensions. This type of cargo shipping grew by 23% over 2016.

In 2017, the Port's passenger shipping traffic ( ferries and cruise ships ) traffic decreased by 2 % (to a total of 186,546 passengers). The port handled a total of 123 ferry and 61 cruise ship calls (51 calls in 2016). Cruise tourists are now handled at the new Getxo Terminal (2017-opened maritime station).

The Port mainly serves European Atlantic shipping traffic (market share 41%), followed by North American Atlantic and African Atlantic. By country, the port's main traffic is with the UK (16% growth). Mexico and the USA. Port's turnover in 2017 increased to EUR 68,8 million (+5,47% compared to 65,2M in 2016). Port's net bank debt remained at EUR 139,8M.

The BilbOPS project (OPS stands for Onshore Power Supply) is based on renewable energy sources (wind, solar, wave power) and involves installing 11 connection points on 7 quays. The EUR 47,5 million (~USD 51M) project is expected to be completed in 2025. Of all the money, 30% (EUR 14,2M) was co-funded by the European Commission (through CEF Transport 2021-2027). The investment includes the construction of a photovoltaic plant (for self-consumption purposes), as well as providing alternative bunker fuel services (via partnership with PetroNor E&P/1968-founded Spanish oil and gas company) including hydrogen and LNG. Also will be installed 48x charging stations for electric cars.

Bilbao cruise port

The Port's cruising season runs from early April through early November.

During season 2016, the cruise port handled 51 calls (an increase of 19% over 2015) and a total of 85,071 tourists (21% increase over 2015). Statistics also showed that of all tourists, ~58% were from the UK and ~14% from the USA.

In 2015, the Port's cruising sector estimated impact on the region was ~EUR 7,27 million, also generating EUR 0,81M fiscal return.

On June 29, 2017, the new passenger terminal hosted the "Bilbao Bizkaia Cruise Forum". The event was aimed at a worldwide audience of professionals within the cruise port sector, travel agencies, auxiliary industry, tourism-related institutions, tour guides, managers of hotels, restaurants, museums, shops and all other local businesses that benefit from Port Bilbao's cruise shipping services.

On February 16, 2018, the Port (via the newly formed ITSAS GAS company) conducted its first ship-to-ship LNG bunkering (fueling with liquefied natural gas).

• ITSAS GAS is a joint venture of Port Authority of Bilbao, Basque Energy Entity (Government agency), Remolcadores Ibaizabal and Naviera Murueta (shipowner of Oizmendi).
• The LNG bunker supply vessel Oizmendi (fka Monte Arucas) was previously refitted to enable to hold (together with its conventional fuel tanks) two additional LNG tanks (capacity 300-m3 each), where the gas is stored in a liquid state (at -161 C) reducing its volume 600 times. The ship's reconstruction works took 7+ months, cost EUR 5,5 million and were done at Astillero Murueta shipyard.

In September 2021 started construction works on the LNG bunker terminal. The project is via partnership with Brittany Ferries and Repsol SA (1987-founded Spanish energy and petrochemical company) and is scheduled for completion in 2022-H1 (first half).

• The LNG Terminal serves mainly LNG-powered cruiseferries deployed on the UK-Spain routes (via France).
• The new terminal has storage capacity 1000 m3 (one LNG cryogenic tank that keeps the natural gas in a liquid state at -160 C).
• This project included an investment by Repsol SA of ~EUR 10 million (~USD 11,8M / ~GBP 8,6M).
• A second LNG Terminal (also via Repsol) was constructed in Port Santander .

Both LNG terminals were co-financed by the European Commission through CEF-Connecting Europe Facilities (EU funding programs).

In late July 2022 was announced a project for shore power connectivity at Prot Bilbao, as well as building Onshore Power Supply infrastructure across the entire Port area (14x total connection points) serving ferries, cruise vessels and container carriers. The project (budgeted EUR 14+ million, scheduled for completion/inauguration in 2026) was financed by the European Union with co-funding from the world's largest cruise companies - Carnival UK , RCI-Royal Caribbean , MSC , TUI . Shore-to-ship power allows the berthed vessels to receive city-grid electricity (needed for the onboard hotel service) allowing them to switch off the main engines, thus reducing the in-port noise and air pollution.

In pre-COVID 2019, the cruise port handled 50 ship calls, in 2020 the cruise shipping operations were suspended, and in 2021 it received only 14 calls.

In 2022, the cruise port handled a total of 78 ship calls (including 20 maiden) and 108154 tourists (including 1066 embarked/1022 disembarked, and the remainder were transit passengers).

In 2023, Port Bilbao received a total of 80 cruise ship calls (including 13 maiden) and handled 148791 passengers (41% from the UK, 27% North Americans, 13% Germans).

Bilbao cruise terminal

Currently, Port Bilbao has two passenger terminals (Olatua and Maritime) and three cruise berths. The new Olatua Terminal has one berth (Getxo 3) and was inaugurated in March 2022. The old Maritime Terminal has two berths (Getxo 1 and Getxo 2).

Getxo cruise terminals are approx 12 km (9 mi) from downtown and approx 24 km (18 mi) from Bilbao Airport.

The cruise port is served by the following bus lines - A3531, A2151, A3411, A3414, A3338, A3451, A2161, A2162, A3422, and A3471.

OLD/Bilbao MARITIME Cruise Terminal (Getxo 1 & 2)

Berth Getxo 1 has length 366 m (1200 ft) while Berth Getxo 2's length is 318 m (1043 ft), which defines their berthing capacity (the vessel's max LOA length). Maritime Terminal can accommodate vessels with max draft 12 m (40 ft) and has total area 6750 m2 (including 1700 m2 terminal building/interior space).

The facilities are served by four gangways (passenger bridges) including 3x 12 m and 1x 10 m in length.

Maritime Terminal has the following facilities: BAGGAGE CONTROL (289 m2), WAITING ROOM (316 m2), TOURIST INFORMATION (32 m2), PORT AUTHORITY OFFICE (30 m2), CHEK-IN AREA (43 m2), EMBARKATION SECURITY CONTROL (103 m2), EMBARKATION BAGGAGE AREA (148 m2), RESTROOMS (52 m2 total), DRESSING ROOM (15 m2), VIP ROOM (42 m2), 3x OFFICES (23 m2 + 33 m2 + 31 m2).

NEW/Bilbao OLATUA Cruise Terminal (Getxo 3)

Berth Getxo 3 has length 355 m (1165 ft/max LOA length). It can accommodate vessels with max draft 12 m (40 ft) and has total area 27413 m2 / 90,000 ft2 (including 3200 m2 / 10,500 ft2 terminal building/interior space).

The new Olatua Terminal is served by four gangways (passenger bridges) with lengths 3x 12 m and 1x 10 m.

Olatua Terminal has three separate areas - EMBARKATION AREA, DISEMBARKATION AREA, and COMMON AREA, with total interior space 1774 m2 (19095 ft2) of which 1592  m2 (17136 ft2) is useful.

The FIRST FLOOR has total area 1193 m2 (zzz ft2, of which 1144 m2 / zzz ft2 is useful).

Olatua Terminal's first cruise liner was P&O UK 's Britannia .

On December 23, 2016, started interior works on the new cruise terminal building, following the structure's completion in November 2016. The new facility (at Cruise Pier 3) is the Port's 3rd Getxo berth dedicated to cruise vessels.

The winning bidder for the construction works was a temporary consortium working with EUR 4,6 million budget.

In summer 2016 (April through June) was built the reinforced concrete structure. Works included foundation and forging of the terminal building's mezzanine and first floor.

Between July-October 2016 was completed the facility's metal structure, serving as a roof support. Followed works on the building's air-conditioning, electricity, flooring, painting.

On the quay was constructed an outside gangway bridge for passenger embarkation/disembarkation (to and from the building). These works alone cost ~EUR 1 million.

The terminal building's height is 15 m (50 ft) high, with a covered area of 3200 m2 (34500 ft2). It is designed as a rectangular glass container and consists of 2 main floors (mezzanine in between). The lower floor has a tourist information desk, reception and check-in counters (for embarking passengers). Here are also the luggage collection area (for disembarking passengers) and the waiting hall. On the mezzanine level is the terminal's VIP Lounge plus offices.

Bilbao's new cruise terminal project also included upgrading the existing pier with long-stay parking (capacity 222 cars). The parking can also be used by Bilbao residents in no-ship days (when there are no docked cruise ships).

Additional 31 car lots were created for the terminal's staff, plus 8 lots for vehicles of disabled passengers, 10 lots for taxis and 40 lots for tourist coaches.

The Olatua Terminal's building (designed as a glass container, height 15 m / 50 ft) has independent routes and stairs for the embarking and disembarking passengers. The interior is sized ~3200 m2 (34450 ft2) and consists of two floors (plus the mezzanine floor). The ground floor houses the Lobby (reception, luggage handling, tourist information desk). The mezzanine floor houses a VIP Room and offices. The first floor houses the Waiting Hall, passenger boarding and landing areas.

Attached to the terminal building is a 169-m/555-ft-long exterior walkway/gangway that provides cruise tourists direct access to their ship.

Its now 23 days to my second Disney Cruise , the Disney Dream to Bilbao Spain 4 night cruise. If anyone is on this cruise, hi, maybe we might see each other in a few weeks. I booked this cruise in opening week April 2022 as soon as general booking opened. When I booked the cruise I had not gone on my first cruise to Norway yet, so I had to wait until general booking opened. I'm now Silver Castaway Club level which has made a big difference to this years planning and being able to book various things. It also means I will get the Silver Anniversary at Sea gifts when I get on the ship. This cruise is round trip from Southampton, England, with 2 days at sea and one port. I didnt start planning for this cruise until October 2022, after my Norway cruise.  

Travel To England and Southampton Planning December 2022 Im travelling from Dublin and Aer Lingus have direct flights from Dublin to Southampton Airport with their regional service Emerald Airlines. The planes are the small 72 seater propeller planes. This means I have to have a very small carry on bag, as the overhead bins are smaller than normal planes and will only have 15kg for checked bag. There is a train from Southampton Airport to the main train station in the city centre. As our cruise leaves on a Wednesday, I thinking about a few days in Southampton before the cruise. Southampton is a Titanic town and somewhere I have always wanted to visit as I an a Titanic fan. I need to do some more research to see what Titanic things like a walking tour or museums are available. I have also been checking out hotels near the train station. The train station is about 10 minutes drive from the cruise port, so it will be easy to get a taxi there on embarkation day. I decided to book an IBIS hotel as I am in their loyalty program and I got 10% off the general public rate. I booked for a few days before the cruise, bed and breakfast , cancel at no extra charge, pay at the hotel rate for before the cruise. This means I can have a day to do Titanic stuff before the cruise. I also booked a night for the day cruise returns. I again booked bed and breakfast , cancel at no extra charge, pay at the hotel rate and I also added early check in. We will be off the ship the latest 9am so its easier to just pay for early check in and get a taxi straight to the hotel. And then I have another day to chill and see more Titanic stuff if I want to before going home the next day. I havent booked flights yet but I did check out the times. Theres just one flight each way with Aer Lingus, which is an afternoon flight. Booking an extra day in a hotel in Southampton means I dont have to waste a day waiting at the airport for the afternoon flight on the day the cruise returns. Ive been watching some of the Disney Magic at Sea YouTube Vlogs from 2021. The Disney Magic was at Horizon Terminal in Southampton port in 2021, so its likely that The Dream will be at the same terminal. There is a Titanic Museum called SeaCity Museum which I will defiantly book. I have also looked at walking Titanic tours. I found there are two types, a self guided and a tour guide. I had a look on YouTube and found a video about the self guided tour. Its called The Titanic Trail. You download the map of Titanic Memorials around Southampton from the various Southampton Tourist websites and you walk to each one yourself. Theres no audio guide, just a map. It seems that many of the memorials are in buildings which may or may not be open and some are hard to find and and some are not accessable to general public. This does not seem to be worth it. The other Titanic Tour I found is with a tour guide and this is the one I will book. Its called Walk the Secrets of the Titanic and is run by Walsh Tours. You meet a guide at designated place and they take you on a 2 hour walking tour. This to me is far better then just wandering around Southampton on your own with a piece of paper. At least with a tour guide, you will get to hear information and stories about the places and buildings. April 2023 I had to renew my passport this year so I decided to use the online service. I took my new photo at home, using a white sheet over a door. There are 3 options Passport Book = €75 Passport Card = €25 Passport Book and Card = €100 I decided to apply for the Passport Book and Passport Card. The Passport Card is valid for travel to all EU Member States, the members of the EEA (Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway), Switzerland and the United Kingdom. I have never had one before but as I use my passport for identification purposes as well as travel, I thought it might be better than carrying my Passport Book everywhere. I got a confirmation email with a tracking number as soon as I made the payment. The tracking number was for the Passport Book only. I would get another email and tracking number for the Passport Card as they would be sent separately. The turnaround time was only 3 days which surprised me. May 2023 I have now booked my flights with Aer Lingus to Southampton. As I had previously found out, this route is operated by Aer Lingus Regional Emerald Airlines and is on the small propeller 72 person plane. As a result I have a smaller carry on luggage allowance. To fit in the overhead bins my bag has to be 7kg or under and no bigger than than 48 x 33 x 20cm. I can also have a small personal item to fit under the seat. July 2023 I have now booked my train tickets from Southampton Airport to Southampton Central Train Station. I booked direct with South Western Railway on their website. I paid in UK Pounds Sterling as I have a UK bank account. I booked an Anytime Single for Southampton Airport to Southampton Central and an Anytime Single from Southampton Central back to Southampton Airport. Both tickets cost £4.70 so it was £9.40 total. I selected E Ticket and was sent an email booking confirmation and the tickets on a PDF attachment. I also downloaded the App and logged in and the tickets are on the App as well. I tried to book the Titanic Walking tour for Tuesday 29 August but it is not available for that day. I also tried to book it for Monday 28 August, my arrival day but I was unable to book for 1 person on the website. I sent an email asking about this. They replied that they only accepted bookings for 2 or more people on their website. I will email in a few weeks and see if I can get on the Monday tour without using the website booking form. August 10 2023 I have now pre booked a taxi on embarkation day to bring me from my hotel to the cruise terminal. I originally booked this hotel as it is walking distance to Horizon Terminal, which Disney usually use. But Southampton port now list The Dream being at Queen Elizabeth II Terminal for my cruise. I'm thinking that on Embarkation day, taxis will be in big demand, probably more than expected, so at least now with the pre booking it will take a bit of the stress away. I booked for 11.15am for a 12pm PAT. This allows time if the taxi is late and for traffic queues at the terminal drop off location. I downloaded Google Map of Southampton so that I can book mark all the Titanic places and do my own version of a walking tour. I have also book marked The Titanic Museum and West Quay Shopping Centre.

Packing and Other Bits and Pieces July 202 This year I decided to join the magnet exchange and the ornament exchange. I have created a magnet design and used an online print website. Total cost for 10 magnets is €12 including shipping For the ornaments I went to one of the big tourist shops in Dublin and found a box of 4 Christmas ornaments with Disney and Ireland images for €15, so I bought 2, total cost €30. So between the magnets and the ornaments I spent €42, thats 7 cabins for the magnets and 7 cabins for the ornaments. I would have loved to do the FE but all the groups are 8 cabins, which to me is too big. Not just from an expense side, but from an actual amount of stuff that is needed for 7 FE exchanges and the amount of potential stuff I would get. I'm flying from Ireland to Southampton and have a weight limit on my checked luggage. And really I would rather save the weight allowance for things I actually want, like DCL merchandise and shopping in Southampton.

Packing and Other Bits and Pieces Our one port day on this cruise is in Spain. Spain is a EU country and has the same currency as my country, the Euro. I will be taking some Euro cash and coins with me for my day in Bilbao. When I travel to America I use a pre loaded currency card. This card can be used in multiple countries, it automatically recognizes different currencies. I had added Euros to this currency card for my day in Bilbao, so that I don't have to use my regular bank card. I have also printed up "business cards" with my stateroom number, my Instagram and the cruise details. This is a handy way to give my contact info to people I meet on the cruise. I have a small metal business card holder to put them in. My flight back to Ireland is the day after the cruise returns to Southampton. On debarkation day I have added early check in to my hotel reservation. I'm expecting to be at the hotel by about 9.30am. My sister lives about an hours train journey from Southampton, so once I get sorted at the hotel, I'm planning to get the train and visit my sister. I'm not going to book train tickets just yet, as there may be a train company strike on that day.

UPDATE Its now 1 week until I travel to England. I am arriving 2 days before my cruise and staying 1 day after my cruise in Southampton. I'm a big Titanic fan and Southampton is a bucket list place for me, as its where Titanic sailed from. I have now booked a Titanic walking tour of Southampton for the day before my cruise and got a ticket for Sea City Museum for the day after my cruise. As we have to leave the ship by 9am the latest on disembarkation day, I have booked a train ticket to visit my sister for the day. My sister lives about 2 hours from Southampton but Ive been hesitant up until now to buy train tickets due to all the train strikes in England. The dates for the next strikes have been announced and none is planned for the day I want to visit my sister. I went online and bought a day return off peak ticket for £29. Hopefully I wont have any train issues.

Nearby Bilbao is the industrial river town of Getxo. It’s a great place to visit to see the Vizcaya Bridge, which is the oldest transporter bridge in the world. It crosses the River Nervión and provides excellent views.

Biscay Coast

Bilbao is in the Basque region of Spain and is on the beautiful Biscay Coast. You can visit the town of Bermeo and learn about its maritime past that dates back to 1236. The food you can’t miss trying while in Bilbao is pintxos, which is similar to tapas, but on a smaller scale. Though you won’t always see them served this way, pintxos are traditionally served on a toothpick alongside a piece of bread (pintxos is a play on the Spanish word “pinchar” which means to poke or stab).

The best way to get pintxos are at one of the many pintxo bars located in Bilbao. To find a popular one, head to Calle Ledesma where bars serving pintxo line the street and offer a plethora of outdoor seating.

Culture & History of the Bilbao Cruise Port

The origins of Bilbao date back to 1300 when it became a city-state. The Old Town area of Las Siete Calles flourished over the centuries, particularly after trade began with the Americas. Basque fishermen and merchants created strong ties to New England, and the city became a focal point for iron and steelworks, shipbuilding, and chemical plants.  In 1937, Bilbao became part of Franco and Basque nationalists were punished. Transportation in Bilbao

Bilbao has a city center that is fairly easy to walk around and see all the main sights. You can also save your energy by taking the metro or bus system around the city. Taxis are easy to recognize with their white exterior that features a red stripe on the side. You’ll find them at taxi stations throughout Bilbao as well as lined up outside the cruise terminal in Getxo. River cruise boats can also get you between sights, such as to the Guggenheim Museum.

Shopping Near the Bilbao Cruise Port

For clothing and souvenirs, you’ll find plenty of shops in which to browse in the Gran Via shopping district. Located on and perpendicular to the street called Gran Via, you’ll find high streets and designer goods from some of the most popular brands around.  

If you want to bring home some local spices and other foodie finds, head to Mercado de la Ribera, a bustling food market located by the river. Even some of the city’s top restaurant chefs find their produce for the day’s menu at this market.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The Euro is the official currency in Bilbao, just like in the rest of Spain. You’ll find ATMs all over the city that dispense Euro notes.

Tipping isn’t compulsory in Bilbao, but it is appreciated. The amount to tip is completely discretionary, but generally 5-10% to taxi drivers is given. Small change is a typical tip for cafes and bars, while nice restaurants likely deserve a 10% tip.

Fabulous experience on the Disney Dream. Really enjoyed the adult only areas of the ship (pools, bars and dining) Dinners in Palo and Remy were amazing. Loved Castaway Cay (lovely bays and great BBQ!). Beauty and the Beast and Believe shows were amazing

Wow, wow, wow! We took the Disney Dream from Port Canaveral on a 5 night cruise and it was simply awesome. Disney is the number one in entertainment and customer service. Characters all around, family game shows, adult entertainment, broadway style shows — phenomenal! We were lucky to go twice to Castaway Cay (Disney's private island at the Bahamas) and this place was built to get passengers from the Disney ships. If I've been to something close to paradise, then Castaway Cay is the place. 

My husband and I took our four boys on the Disney Dream in Oct 2011. Our children were aged 6mths, 5, 8 and 10. It was the best holiday ever. The Dream is an amazing ship with so much to do. My boys loved the kids club. We enjoyed the dining experiences and the staff do everything possible to make sure you have a great time. We will definately be cruising with DCL again in the future.

 went on it with my family and i thought it was cool but the food there was a disappointment. After all it was really good and cool... I really want to go there again

The UK’s largest cruise port and where many will begin their cruise holiday, Southampton has no shortage of maritime and historical attractions. Discover local landmarks on a walking tour including 30 ancient monuments, learn about the tragic story of the Titanic and escape to the great outdoors at the New Forest National Park. With numerous options for seafood dining and even a free art gallery, Southampton is an undoubtedly great destination for a pre or post-cruise stay.

Dedicated to the tragedy of the Titanic, SeaCity Museum excellently portrays the aftermath through interactive exhibits. Featuring a 1:25 scale model of the ship, visitors learn about life onboard as well as the disaster that deeply affected Southampton in 1912.

Home to over 20 aircraft that were integral to the war effort, Solent Sky Museum is dedicated to the history of the RAF. Southampton itself played a large role in producing Supermarine Spitfires, which you’ll learn all about here.

If you’re looking to escape the busy port city, the New Forest National Park is just a short distance away with native New Forest ponies and lush heathland. Visitors can also catch events, activities and workshops throughout the year.

One of the Basque country’s best destinations, Bilbao is a hub of fascinating architecture, contemporary design and artistic flair in almost every direction you look. Start your exploration in Plaza Nueva for the best sightseeing, shopping and cuisine, as well as museums and galleries. You’ll also find many lush parks in the city and rolling hills in the surrounding areas, making this a truly unique experience in comparison to most Spanish city breaks.

Built in the 14th and 15th centuries, Bilbao Cathedral has a Gothic style exterior and interior, though with Renaissance and neo-Classical influences. Despite still being a working church, visitors can take a tour with information provided by an audio guide.

Towering from the top of a hill, the 16th-century Basilica de Begoña can be reached on foot or by an elevator from Calle Esperanza. Its imposing Gothic steeple makes a fantastic photo opportunity while, inside the basilica, you’ll find an intricate gold altarpiece.

Displaying works from the 12th century through to the present day, the Museum of Fine Arts of Bilbao is a must visit particularly for traditional art enthusiasts. Visitors will find paintings, sculptures, drawings, engravings and more, organised by topic alphabetically.

One of the largest museums in Spain, the Guggenheim Museum is dedicated to showcasing modern and contemporary art. The building itself is a unique architectural landmark while inside you’ll find countless ever-changing exhibitions.

If you’re in need of some authentic Spanish cuisine after a long day of sightseeing and shopping, Plaza Nueva is the place to be. The square has a reputation as the city’s social gathering spot, hosting markets, bars, cafés and more. This is the place to try a renowned local pinxo!

Fans rejoice as Athletic celebrate Copa win with boat party

Hundreds of thousands of fans lined the streets of Bilbao on Thursday to celebrate Athletic Club 's Copa del Rey triumph, with the players crossing the city by river boat.

Athletic beat Mallorca on penalties on Saturday in the Copa del Rey final in Seville -- after the match had finished 1-1 after extra time -- to lift the club's first major trophy in 40 years.

The LaLiga club traditionally celebrate trophy wins on their barge, 'La Gabarra ,' by sailing down the Nervion river, which passes through the centre of Bilbao.

The river route began in the port of Getxo, around 7.5 miles from the centre of Bilbao, at 4 p.m. local time and ended at the city's Town Hall 2 1/2 hours later.

The players' barge was followed by a flotilla of over 150 smaller boats chartered by fans, who had paid between €250 ($266) and €3000 ($3201) to join the event.

One of the boats was skippered by former Athletic defender Iñigo Martinez . The Barcelona defender, who left Athletic in 2023 to join the Catalan club, made sure to not miss the opportunity to partake in the celebrations.

The players disembarked at the Town Hall for more festivities, before boarding an open top bus to take to the streets.

"This is the most fascinating club in the world, that's for sure," coach Ernesto Valverde said. "And in terms of celebrations, it's the best."

Schools in the city shut early, while fans had lined the river banks since midday, waiting for hours to ensure a good view of Athletic's biggest celebrations in four decades.

"It's an incredible day which we'll never forget," club captain Iker Muniain said.

The Basque club's last major trophies came in 1984, when they won a league and cup double, the last time ' La Gabarra ' took to the water.

The current squad wore red-and-white shirts on Thursday which were replicas of those worn by the players 40 years ago.

"This is for everyone. For those of us who are here, for those who have left us, and for those who have played for Athletic and didn't achieve this," forward Iñaki Williams said.

Local authorities said over 1,200 people had been involved in providing security for the celebrations, including 700 police officers.

Some estimates suggested that in total, a million people had attended the celebrations.
