Orders containing items that ALL have an In Stock or Clearance! status, placed prior to 12 Midday AEST, will generally be dispatched on the same day (on business days).

Can I pick up my order from your warehouse?

Currently, we are unable to offer a customer pickup service from our warehouse.

Check Australian Standard Delivery Costs Before Checkout: See rates for all Australian Deliveries via Australia Post eParcel Domestic Service prior to finalizing your order.

HOW LONG WILL I HAVE TO WAIT FOR MY ORDER TO BE DELIVERED?

Most orders are shipped out  same or next business day   when ordering before 1pm (AEST).

We quote the time before an item ships for most products on our site. 95% of our items available to purchase are in stock and ready to ship! We ship items that are in stock same day (or at least within 24 hours) and items that aren't in stock can be sourced and packed for shipment in two to seven days. This is the time that it takes for us to ship the order, not the time it takes for the order to be delivered.

You will receive an email to let you know your item has been shipped, or if you have set up an account, you can login to check the status of your order at any time.

To work out the total delivery time you will need to add the shipping time quoted on our site to the following delivery times quoted by Australia Post, although in many cases can be quicker.

EXPRESS POST OR EXPRESS COURIER

If you need your order in a hurry and won't be home to sign for the package you can send it by Express Post or Express Courier, often next day in Victoria and usually cuts around two days off the delivery time for other destinations.

Express Post is mostly used for customers with Australia Post PO boxes.

Express Courier is usually with TOLL PRIORITY couriers and can be left with no signature required, so you are not required to be at home. Delivery by express courier is usually 1-2 days to most areas in Australia, but delivery to remote areas may take longer.

Using Express Post or Courier also gives you a tracking number to trace your order.

Express Post is charged at a flat rate of $9.50 per order to Australia only, using Australia Post

Express Courier is charged at $15 per order (Australia only)

DO I HAVE TO BE HOME FOR MY ORDER TO BE DELIVERED?

No, just put in the comments box at checkout what you would prefer be done with the parcel (ie: leave at door)

If your parcel is sent by Australia Post, they may leave if they deem it is safe, or may card for pick up at your local post office. If your parcel is shipped with Couriers Please, the parcel will be left with no signature, or you can login to nominate an alternate address. If your parcel is shipped with TOLL DX EXPRESS, the parcel will be left with no signature if safe to do so, or (rarely) may be carded for pickup at your local news agency.

NEW ZEALAND ORDERS

For New Zealand orders, you have the choice of tracking for $15, or shipping without tracking.

Shipping with tracking will normally be via Australia Post Pack and track service which receives a tracking number. Please ensure NZ addresses are valid for NZ Post delivery, and note that customs clearance may delay your order, so we cannot guarantee a timeframe for delivery.

If your order is required in New Zealand in under two weeks, we recommend shipping with tracking.

Parcels normally reach the Auckland or Wellington regions within 5-7 business days, however other areas of New Zealand can take longer. Again, any delays at customs are out of our control, unfortunately. We will certainly pack and ship your order same or next business day, and email when shipment is sent.

INTERNATIONAL ORDERS

All International orders (except free New Zealand shipping) are shipped by Australia Post's Air Mail Pack and Track service (where available to your country).

Tracking will be provided for parcels thicker than 2cm. Tracking is not available to some countries. We are able to deliver to post office boxes and street addresses that are serviced by the postal service in your country.

Please note that certain products are not able to be shipped to international destinations due to international customs regulations. The product page will state this information if this is the case. Also, we are not able to ship to countries that pose a high risk of credit card fraud.

Most international orders arrive within two to three weeks, and often they arrive much sooner. In some cases delays at customs may delay the order. Unfortunately, any delay after we have shipped your order is totally out of our control for international orders.

The international shipping rates are weight-based. The weight of any item can be found on its product detail page. To reflect the policies of the shipping companies we use, all weights will be rounded up to the next full 500g. Please feel free to contact us ([email protected]) if you feel the postage rates are not what you expected based on your products - sometimes the calculator gets it wrong!

Standard International delivery charges can be estimated from your shopping basket page before you proceed with the order.

Need to leave us a message or comment? Don't hesitate to contact us and we'll get back to you within 24 hours!

I flew 54 hours and tested all the travel pillows

It was a case of purgatory on a plane, but this traveller was determined to find a way to make her eight-flight journey bearable. Enter this bizarre neck pillow.

Big mistake I made in posh New York hotel

Big mistake I made in posh New York hotel

Ever stumbled off a long-haul flight with a spasming neck and spine twisted like a spirelli noodle?

Sleeping in economy is modern-day medieval torture. Our bodies aren’t designed to be strapped into a sow stall and rocketed through the sky in a metal can for 10-plus hours. If you’re going to attempt purgatory on a plane, you need a travel pillow. A good one.

On a recent 54-hour, eight-flight journey from far north-east Canada to Melbourne, I flight tested five different brands. I also got an expert opinion from a chiropractor.

Here’s how they measured up.

Woollip $69.95. Picture: Catherine Best

Disclaimer: I was embarrassed to use Woollip. The inflatable face-plant pillow looks weird but … it was surprisingly comfortable. Inspired by massage chairs, Woollip was created by French father and daughter team Franck and Diane Levy, thanks to a successful crowd-funding campaign. The theory goes that when seated, gravity pulls you forward, so Woollip (pilloow spelt backwards) supports the body’s natural leaning posture, warding off a stiff neck. Woollip inflates easily with about six puffs, has a face cradle and side arm cavities (you can watch your device through the peep hole) and folds into a light, book-sized pouch. It was handy on my small Twin-Otter flight from Saglek Airstrip to Goose Bay in Newfoundland and Labrador because the aircraft had no headrests. Even without a tray table for support, I managed a few bursts of shut-eye and the position felt natural and strangely comforting, foetal even. I experimented with side positions but couldn’t get comfortable. I’m not sure I would use Woollip on an overnight flight but it was great for a nap.

Expert Dr David Jones of Better Backs chiropractic in Melbourne says: “This is quite clever but impractical. It offers many options for variable sleep positions, but none of these are really that great for your neck. But for some people, it could allow them the option of different sleeping positions.”

Note: This pillow is now discontinued

Samsonite Memory Foam $29.95. Picture: Catherine Best

SAMSONITE MEMORY FOAM , $36.95

A step up from your two-for-$30 airport cheapies, the Samsonite memory foam pillow has a classic U-shape design but with more support than a bargain-basement brand. Rolled up, the pillow stuffs into an attached drawstring pouch and is reasonably compact (about the size of a mini rockmelon). The snuggly velour cover (removable) is promising but that’s where the comfort ends. The pillow has way too much bulk behind the neck and not enough structure to hold it in place. I tested this pillow on four ‘milk-run’ flights from Goose Bay to St John’s and found that it kept pushing my head and neck forward at an irregular angle. If I rested my head on the side arms, the pillow would eventually slide out of position. It was uncomfortable and only slightly better than a rolled-up jacket.

Expert says: “This is an all-round easy-to-use travel pillow. Utilising memory foam, it contours to your neck and has side supports to help decrease side head flop. However, it would be better if these supports were adjustable. In my opinion, it is probably the easiest to use of the pillows and would suit most people’s necks and provide reasonable support.”

Good Flight Sleep $60. Picture: Catherine Best

GOOD FLIGHT SLEEP , $60

Good Flight Sleep takes the U-pillow to a whole new level. Australian designed and made, the pillow has a slim Velcro strip that fastens at the back of the neck and padded plastic ventilation inserts that support the chin at the front. This means three things: the pillow doesn’t slide around, the neck has good radial support and the head isn’t pushed forward unnaturally. Tick, tick, tick. The pillow comes in two sizes, is super-light and can be squished into your carry-on bag or attached to an external strap. I tested Good Flight Sleep on flight number six from St John’s to Toronto and found it to be incredibly ergonomic. My head was able to sink back comfortably into the seat and there was no head-lolling or pillow slippage. I even inadvertently used it back to front once and found it no less effective. My only criticism is that the chin support could be a little higher and more padded.

Expert says: “This is less of a sleep aid and more of a neck brace. It doesn’t really hug the cervical lordosis (curve of your neck), which is one of the features I was looking for. However, if you are restless and find your travel pillows fall out of position, that won’t be a problem with this pillow as it velcros in place.”

trtl $54.95. Picture: Catherine Best

TRTL , $72.99

It looks like a big cumbersome scarf, but don’t let the unconventional design put you off — trtl is a travel innovation. More neck swaddle than pillow (stay with me), the trtl has a curved internal spine that nuzzles between the head and shoulder. The end of the fleece scarf wraps around the neck and chin and is fixed in place with a velcro strip. I used the trtl from Toronto to Vancouver and it provided wonderful neck and chin support. It took a bit of getting used to and required a few adjustments (sorry, fellow passengers) to get the position and tension just right. Once comfortably fitted, there was no way my head was going anywhere, and my neck felt really well supported. The only drawback: there’s no flexibility to change your head position without unravelling it and starting over, which is really disruptive when you’re trying to sleep. Light and compact, the trtl is easy to stash in your luggage, despite its unusual shape.

Expert says: “I quite like this design and think it is quite supportive of the cervical curve, however the manufacturer instructs you to wear it on the side or front of your neck. That would be good for those whose chins fall to their chest, but I feel that it would be difficult for most people to use and get good support.”

Cabeau Evolution S3, $59.95. Picture: Catherine Best

CABEAU EVOLUTION S3 , US$39.99

The Rolls-Royce of U-pillows, Cabeau succeeds where many others fail. The difference? Cabeau has clip-in toggles at the front and a slim-line design at the back. That means full radial head and neck support, no sliding around and no pushing the head unnaturally forward. The pillow also comes with nifty straps that hook over the wings of the headrest in planes. I saved this bad boy for the longest leg — the 15.5-hour marathon flight from Vancouver to Melbourne. I managed to get 5.5 hours’ broken sleep (so says my smart watch) and had no neck stiffness or discomfort. The memory-foam pillow sculpted beautifully to my head, neck and shoulders and was more cushioned than the other pillows. I didn’t use the seat straps though because they kept tugging the pillow up and weren’t needed. The Cabeau folds into a neat zip case that can be clipped onto a backpack. It’s slightly bigger than the Samsonite when stowed and a little heavier than the other brands. Otherwise, it’s a winner. And it even comes with a sneaky zip compartment to stash your earplugs.

Expert says: “This is a great mix of adjustability, function and comfort. It supports the neck with memory foam that moulds to your neck curve (cervical lordosis) better than Samsonite, and the seat attachment keeps your head in that ideal sleep posture. This ticks the most boxes for me and gives good support.”

This airplane pillow attaches to your headrest, so I can actually sleep on a plane — even in the middle seat

  • This $40 Cabeau travel pillow has made my economy red-eye flights feel like business class.
  • It attaches to your headrest, so it won't move around even during turbulence and I can finally sleep on the plane — even in the middle seat.
  • It also has an ergonomic design that's more comfortable than other airplane pillows I've used, and rolls up into its own case so I can travel with it easier.

Insider Today

Since business class seats are financially out of reach for many frequent fliers, anyone who's flown economy is familiar with the woes of sleeping on a plane.

I've seen fellow passengers bring inflatable pillows, squishy bean-bag styles, and more, but they all slide around and continuously shift with every turbulent bump. That's why I love the $40 Cabeau Evolution S3 pillow .

This pillow isn't exactly stylish, but when I'm spending 10+ on a flight, I don't care. Now that many airlines are charging extra money to choose a seat before checking in, I feel a sense of dread when I realize I've got a middle seat on my upcoming flight. But with this pillow, I know that I can sleep comfortably in any seat with no fear of slumping down onto my neighbor two minutes after I doze off.

This travel pillow can be secured to your headrest so it won't move around as you sleep

The Evolution S3 pillow looks somewhat similar to many other U-shaped airplane pillows. However, it has a handful of extra features that make a big difference.

There's no much set-up involved in using the Evolution S3 pillow – it's a pillow, after all – but it does include two straps that you can secure around your seat's headrest (even if you're stuck in the dreaded middle seat). It attaches around the headrest for adults or around the base of the headrest for kids and shorter travelers. Because the straps are elastic and secured with Velcro, it can wrap around just about any size headrest – it's definitely "one-size-fits-all" and I didn't have any problems using it on my flights. The overall experience is much more comfortable than using an inflatable pillow.

One design consideration though is that if your seat doesn't have a headrest at all, the traps on this pillow might not stretch wide enough. If that's the case, you can still use the pillow like you would any other, and I'd bet the ergonomic design would still work better than your other travel pillows.

As for the visuals, the pillow comes in a variety of colors. The " Cardinal " and " Galaxy " color options are probably the most attention-grabbing while the gray and black will likely blend in a bit better with your seat's headrest. I prefer the brighter ones as I tend to leave things on planes fairly often and those stand out a bit more.

It's also comfortable and can be rolled up in its own travel case

Instead of being a lumpy, uncomfortable pillow that gives you a few hours of sporadic sleep, the memory foam makes it actually comfortable. You can rest nearly as well in your airplane seat as you can at home on your couch.

During my testing, neck pain or a falling pillow never woke me up. Instead of nodding off and falling over on my neighbor – or, worse, not falling asleep at all on a red-eye – I fell asleep fast and stayed asleep. If you've got an eye mask and earplugs or headphones, you can basically settle in for the night. It's almost like having a cushy business-class seat — except that it only costs $40.

When you're all ready to deplane, the pillow can be rolled up "like a cinnamon roll" (according to the instructions) and slipped into the accompanying storage bag. You can then clip the bag around your suitcase, saving storage space in your carry-on bag. It was easy to fit in the case on my first try.

Read more: The best travel pillows you can buy

The area around your neck is raised higher to keep your head from rolling as you sleep

One of my favorite features, aside from the ability to stay upright via the headrest attachment, is the focus on keeping your head and neck straight.

The inside of the U-shape (the area of the pillow closest to your neck) is raised higher than the rest of the pillow to help avoid head bobbing, which can wake up even the heaviest sleeper. This pillow is also flat in the back, which might not sound important, but it is.

Normal airplane pillows can push your neck out and make it difficult to find a comfortable fit. But because this one is flat in the back, it sits right against the headrest, keeping your spine aligned and upright instead of being pitched forward.

If you like to wear a mask or listen to music when you sleep, you'll love the roomy side pocket on the pillow. I stored my eye mask in it, and when I was ready to sleep, I swapped it for my phone to avoid dropping it while I slept. This is also a good strategy if you still use headphones with a cord like me, so you don't have to worry about the cord dangling or getting tangled in your blanket.

The material might make your neck feel warm, but the removable cover is machine-washable

A potential downside of the Evolution S3 pillow is that it might make your neck a little warm, which I experienced.

I'm almost always freezing on planes, but I had my male travel companion test it out too just to confirm. While he agreed that the pillow was far more comfortable than expected, he also reported waking up with some neck sweat. Fortunately, the cover is removable and can be machine-washed, so even if you do happen to overheat, you can wash it when you get home (or in your hotel room sink.)

While I wouldn't consider it a major issue, it's worth noting that the pillow will get smushed when it's rolled up and in the case, so it'd take a few minutes to fully expand again. For that reason, Cabeau recommends using the case only during travel and not storing the pillow rolled up.

I've never slept better on a plane, and even my seat neighbors have commented on the ingenious design

This pillow is an affordable way to help make your next flight feel far more comfortable than you ever thought possible, even if you're in a middle seat in economy.

Most airplane pillows are generic inflatable or bean-bag style options sold at airport stores and slide around when you need it most. In terms of innovative styles that prop your head up, the Trtl Travel Pillow wraps around your neck so you can customize the fit. It's about $10 cheaper and easier to travel with as it doesn't include a foam base like this one, but it doesn't connect to headrests and doesn't have storage pockets, which are features I found to be key with the Evolution S3 pillow .

I've never slept better on a plane than with the Evolution S3 pillow, and I've even had a seat neighbors comment on the ingenious design. Yes, it looks a little weird, but who cares if you wake up on the other side of the world feeling well-rested and ready to go?

Review: Cabeau Evolution S3 Travel Pillow

cabeau travel pillow brisbane

Cabeau’s Evolution S3 Travel Pillow claims to be the world’s best. I’ve tried a few travel pillows in my time but resolved a few years ago that none of them work and regardless of whether they inflate, are filled with beans or memory foam, they’re a design failure. Despite my doubts, I splurged on an Evolution S3 just before a trip from Winnipeg to Barcelona in a last-ditch try to get some shut-eye on an overnight flight.

The problem with sleeping on a plane

I CANNOT sleep on a plane. It’s just impossible. I see people in deep REM on a long-haul flight, and I want to punch them (not literally, of course). I just can’t get into a comfortable position to make sleeping possible. Invariably, after a flight where I’ve tried to sleep, my neck and back hurt and I deplane bleary-eyed with various kinks and in a surly mood. Not a good way to arrive at one’s destination.

The only time I have a blissful sleep that leaves me refreshed after a long-haul flight is when I’m lucky enough to score business class tickets and can lie flat. That’s happened twice.

Even though it seems obvious now, I could never pinpoint the problem. Steve manages to sleep sitting up relatively well as does my brother. So do countless others I observe sitting around me while I’m wide awake on a flight.

Turns out it’s my heavy head!

Why I gave the Cabeau Evolution S3 Travel Pillow a chance

cabeau travel pillow brisbane

On a recent tag-along trip to Amsterdam , I was chatting with one of Steve’s colleagues about how difficult it is to sleep on a plane. She shared my problem but said that she discovered a great sleep mask that helped. A sleep mask? That wasn’t going to do it for me. She explained that the ZzzBand was different; it had straps on it that attached to the plane seat and prevented your head from falling forward.

That’s it! The moment Steve’s colleague mentioned the straps, I realized that was my problem—either I have a weighty head or feeble neck muscles. Maybe both. My bobbing head either wakes me up or slumps into an awkward position, making sleep very uncomfortable.

I googled the ZzzBand when I got home, and that started a trail that led me to the Evolution S3 Travel Pillow. When I examined the mask option more closely, I became skeptical that it would work for me. I wasn’t crazy about something being up against my face for hours. I know from sleeping with my traditional, loose-fitting mask at home, it doesn’t take much for me to acquire facial depression lines that leave me looking like I’ve endured some horrible accident resulting in scarring post reconstructive surgery. What would I look like after sleeping with a mask tight enough to hold my hefty head upright?

When I came across the Evolution S3 Travel Pillow , I was convinced this was a better option. I was excited to discover that my favourite travel store, U.N. Luggage carried the pillow and I rushed out to buy it the day before our recent Barcelona trip.

What I like about this travel pillow

From the images I saw online, the Evolution S3 Travel Pillow had a few unique features that held promise:

  • It has straps that attach to the plane headrest with two different configurations to accommodate different body heights.
  • The moulded upper ridge of the pillow seemed like it would provide side-of-head support if I wanted to lean left or right rather than remain rigidly face-forward.
  • The toggle straps in the front cinch the pillow tightly under the chin for a secure fit
  • Memory foam is comfortable and squishable. The pillow compresses to fit into a small case that you can attach to your luggage. When I see people in the airport carting their full-sized travel pillow, it looks like a hassle. Who needs it?

cabeau travel pillow brisbane

The verdict after my seven-hour overnight flight

I slept a total of five hours in relative comfort! At best, I usually get two hours of uncomfortable interrupted sleep, so this was a significant improvement. Best of all, I did not have a sore neck and upper back when I got off the plane and for days after as is usual. All of the features I thought would make it different panned out.

It’s not as good as lying flat, but I do not regret this purchase as I have with other travel pillows. One thing I’ll want to try is to adjust the straps into the configuration that would position it lower. I forgot to take the instructions with me on my flight for the inaugural use so just left it in the higher position. Any lower might be too low, but I’ll give it a try.

The Cabeau S3 Evolution Travel Pillow is the real deal. It’s better than any other pillow I’ve tried.

I just bought this pillow and used it on our flight to London! I found the straps didn’t stay attached to the seat back, but that might have been operator error. It is by far the most comfortable pillow I’ve ever used and I love that it rolls up into a “cinnamon bun” during transport.

' src=

Good to hear that is works for you too. Do play around with the straps. It took me a couple of tries to get the right position. I also wonder if it depends on plane seat design. I was on an Air Canada flight.

' src=

I too have trouble sleeping on a plane and I have never found pillows particularly useful. The Cabeau S3 Evolution sounds like something I should try on my next long flight.

It’s definitely worth a try if head bobbing is an issue for you. The memory foam is super comfy too.

I Never Found Neck Pillows Comfortable Until I Tried This $35 Memory Foam Version

Travel + Leisure / Reese Herrington

Well, it happened. I’m officially at the age when every long-haul flight leaves me with a massive neck ache. And, after years of insisting that neck pillows aren’t worth the hassle of carrying around the airport, I’ve finally hopped on the bandwagon and now won’t travel without my Cabeau Evolution Earth Neck Pillow .

With its ergonomic design, the travel pillow is the only one I’ve tried that simultaneously (and instantly) supports and comforts my neck when I’m sitting upright on planes for five-plus hours flying back and forth from Los Angeles to New York. It features a highly cushioned memory foam core that contours to your neck, as well as strategically raised sides to promote the proper stabilization of your head, neck, and shoulders. As a nervous flier, I never used to get much sleep on airplanes, but incorporating the neck pillow into my in-flight routine has helped me finally catch some Zs.

I’m also a fan of its flattened back design, which aids in stabilizing and supporting your neck while helping you lean against the headrest of your seat in a comfortable way. And, since I’m someone that always runs hot on planes, the Evolution Earth pillow ’s open-neck front ensures that there’s consistent airflow, and I never get too sweaty or overheated while I’m waiting for the air-conditioning to kick in.

But, being the first neck pillow to win me over isn’t the only notable accomplishment of the Cabeau Evolution Earth Neck Pillow ; it’s also the brand’s first sustainable model. The neck pillow’s plush fabric is made from recycled plastic bottles, and its memory foam cushioning can be recycled. In fact, Cabeau partnered with the eco-friendly organization CleanHub and made the pledge to remove more than 25,000 kilograms of plastic from the ocean.

My only qualm with the Cabeau Evolution Earth Neck Pillow is its chin strap. Though it’s great at preventing the dreaded bobblehead movement that every flier despises, I find that it’s a bit too restrictive, especially if I’ll be wearing the neck pillow for a long amount of time. But, I’m happy to report that the pillow is still comfy and stays in place without the hook-and-loop chin strap fastened — so much so that I find myself wearing the Evolution Earth pillow when I’m working at my desk or watching T.V. on the couch for pain relief. And, I'm sure it will come in clutch for future road trips.

Staying on theme with its earth-friendly design, the Cabeau Evolution Earth Neck Pillow is available in four terrestrial colorways: terra (navy-teal), water (royal blue-light blue), fire (red-orange), and wind (black-gray). I have the fire version, which adds a fun pop of color to my all-black carry-on and travel tote.

If you're tired of mid-flight neck aches and pain, take this as your sign to get the Cabeau Evolution Earth Neck Pillow , and keep scrolling to find other game-changing products that will help upgrade your in-flight comfort.

10 top-rated travel pillows for long trips

Tired businessman with neck pillow sleeping on passenger train

Between crowded seats, crying babies and limited leg room, traveling on long flights can be exhausting and uncomfortable. A perfect pillow makes the trek slightly easier to bear and can help you get some sleep during those travel periods. To help you narrow down which travel pillow is right for you, we consulted sleep and travel experts about what to know before shopping, plus we compiled highly rated options to consider.

Selected. Our top picks

Cabeau Evolution S3 Sleep Pillow

What are the benefits of travel pillows?

Whether your airplane seat is too small or your bus ride endures several bumps, it may be difficult to relax on a long trip. Add noisy conversations and frequent overhead announcements and you have multiple barriers in your way to getting a good nap.

One of the main reasons people struggle to sleep while traveling — especially on international flights with time changes — is because they’re trying to sleep at a time with “low circadian and homeostatic drive” (a time when they would not normally sleep, so they’re not as tired), says Dr. Andrew Varga, a board-certified physician at The Mount Sinai Integrative Sleep Center . The other factor, according to Varga, is the sleeping space, which is usually cramped and doesn’t let you lie recumbent or change positions, except in typically pricey business- and first-class cabins.

“Not everyone is an equally deep sleeper, and people with any sleep issues at baseline will often have a harder time sleeping in a louder and less comfortable environment — such as an airplane,” says board-certified psychiatrist and sleep medicine specialist Dr. Alex Dimitriu . He noted that posture plays a big role in the discomfort we feel — and as anyone who has slept on a plane knows, “the head tends to fall off to the side or forward, which is both uncomfortable and can cause neck pain, and [can] even make breathing less efficient.”

“Sleeping upright is not at all a natural position,” says Dr. Mayank Shukla , a board-certified pulmonologist and sleep medicine specialist in New York City. “Our head weighs almost 10 pounds and flops around the neck when sleeping upright, leading to aches and pain with all that muscle strain.”

Experts noted that travel pillows can provide support for the neck and head, alleviating some pain and discomfort when combating an upright sleeping position while traveling. They’re typically portable, lightweight, ergonomically designed and come in different sizes to fit every type of person, plus some have additional high-tech features like temperature regulation. This is an ideal tool for frequent flyers who hope to maintain a semi-regular sleeping schedule.

How we picked the best travel pillows

The best travel pillows are ones that are comfortable, supportive and easy to carry around, according to our experts. When shopping for a quality travel pillow, they recommend considering the following factors:

  • Inflatable vs. non-inflatable : You can adjust inflatable pillows to your desired firmness, and easily store them away when deflated. With non-inflatable pillows, on the other hand, you can fill them with more cushioned materials to promote comfort including memory foam and poly-fiber fill.
  • Portability : Look for features like straps (that you can attach to your luggage ) or an accompanying pouch (that you can pack it down into) for ease while on the go.

How to shop for a travel pillow.

The best travel pillow is one that you find the most comfortable to use for extended periods of time. Ideally, Dimitriu recommends testing out the pillow beforehand to see whether it’s comfortable and how it changes shape.

“The emphasis for most users should be to see how comfortably the pillow lets you rest with your back to the seat and without your head falling forward,” he says. And while larger pillows tend to provide more cushioning, he noted “airplane seats are tight, and there is such a thing as too much pillow.”

Below, we highlighted two of the most important considerations when shopping for travel pillows: inflatability and portability.

Inflatable vs. non-inflatable

When going on a long-haul trip, most travelers don’t want another thing to lug around. “Inflatable pillows may allow for more cushion and can fold to a smaller size,” Dimitriu says, adding that they won’t take up too much space in your luggage. They’re also typically more adjustable — you can change the amount of air to get more or less firmness, depending on your comfort level.

Non-inflatable travel pillows include various types of filling material including memory foam, polyester fiberfill and microbeads. While the different materials can make it easier to find a more comfortable fit, non-inflatable pillows tend to be bulkier than inflatable ones. When it comes to cleaning, both inflatable and non-inflatable pillows typically have removable covers that you can machine wash or spot clean.

Portability

If you’re on a multipart journey or backpacking through Europe, for example, the size and portability of your travel pillow may be just as important off a plane as it is on it. Some travel pillows have straps that you can attach to your luggage, while with others you can fold to fit inside a small bag.
