"Solitude is Candlemass's Paranoid": How a killer hangover inspired one of doom metal's most epic tracks
Recorded in an old bomb shelter, Candlemass's Solitude was less about deteriorating mental health than it was an ode to killer hangovers, but nonetheless set the tone for the epic doom to come
When Leif Edling founded doom pioneers Candlemass in the Swedish municipality of Upplands Väsby in late 1984, he had one mission. “We wanted to be the heaviest band in the world,” says the bassist. “We wanted to be heavier and more metal than anyone.”
Candlemass made good on that promise. Their grandiose, distinctly northern European sound was best encapsulated on Solitude , the magnificent opening track of their 1986 debut album, Epicus Doomicus Metallicus . This half-speed symphony of sadness was the perfect marriage of heaviness and grandeur, an epic wail of desolation that still stands as a doom metal landmark nearly 40 years after its release. As Leif puts it: “ Solitude is our Paranoid .”
The bassist had formed Candlemass from the ashes of his previous band, Nemesis, with drummer Matz Ekström. The pair spent all their spare krona at Stockholm record shop Heavy Sounds, picking up the latest albums from the likes of Venom, Motörhead and Iron Maiden. But it was underground bands such as Trouble, Saint Vitus, Manilla Road and Warlord that shaped Candlemass’s nascent sound more than anything. “Most Swedish bands at the time had a more commercial sound,” says Leif. “We got our sound and unique style pretty fast. No one sounded like us.”
That sound followed the proto-doom template laid down in the early 70s by Black Sabbath and their cult US cousins Pentagram. But where Candlemass’s transatlantic contemporaries Saint Vitus and Trouble made music for biker and dive bars, the Swedes’ music had a grandeur that evoked sweeping mountains and Scandinavian forests. “We wanted to make doom metal of epic proportions,” says Leif. “That’s why we called the album Epicus Doomicus Metallicus .”
Leif had already written the songs that would appear on the album when he came up with a quick, off-the-cuff riff. “I wrote it in a minute or two,” he recalls. “I played it to Matz, and he immediately said, ‘You have to write a full song based on that riff, and it has to go on the album.’”
It didn’t take long for Leif to put meat on the bones of the riff and turn it into a proper song. “I had to deliver it ASAP because we were about to make the album,” he says. “I didn’t spend much time on it. It was one of those songs that more or less writes itself. All of a sudden, there it was: ‘Bam! I give you Solitude !’”
Lyrically, Solitude found Leif dredging the bleakest depths of his soul. The opening lines (‘ I’m sitting here alone in darkness/Waiting to be free ’) are a portent of something terrible to come, while the song’s howled hook – ‘ Please let me die in solitude! ’ - suggests the whole thing is a study of mental anguish and suicidal ideation. Except it’s nothing of the sort.

“The lyrics came about when I was really hungover,” says Leif with a laugh. “I usually wrote lyrics on a Sunday because I had a free day, and I was often in a shitty shape after going to the local pub the night before. The lyrics were about feeling crap and kind of wanting to die because you felt so terrible. But you write something personal, and then it goes off in another direction.”
Candlemass were still a trio at that point, consisting of Matz Ekström, guitarist Mats Björkman and Leif himself. Initially, the latter pulled double duty as singer and bassist. “But my voice wasn’t great, and it’s also a bitch to sing and play bass at the same time,” he says. “In those early days, we were always on the hunt for a singer. I almost sang on Epicus…, but luckily we found Johan before I could do any damage.”
“Johan” was Johan Längqvist, a singer whose previous band, Jonah Quizz, had split up a few years earlier. Johan had a powerful, near-operatic voice that put most other metal singers in the shade in terms of range and tone.
He was an 11th-hour recruit - Matz Ekström had only persuaded him to appear on the album a few days before they were due to enter Stockholm’s Thunderload Studios in February 1986. The first time Leif met Johan was on the first day of recording. “It was insane,” says the bassist. “And then he came in and blew us away.”
Thunderload was located in an old bomb shelter below Stockholm’s Universitetet metro station. The conditions were less than conducive for making an album. “It was cold and damp and we had to wear long johns and gloves down there,” remembers Leif. “You could see your breath coming out of your mouth. It wasn’t easy for playing and recording. We couldn’t even tune our guitars. And we had to piss in a small, red bucket in a corner. But Ragne [Wahlquist, producer] was very patient with us. He taught us what to do and what not to do.”
One person who did know what to do was Johan Längqvist. “He nailed Solitude right away, in a take or maybe two,” says Leif. “He was like the God of Singing. We had goosebumps listening to him.”
Leif planned to open the album with another song, Demon’s Gate , but Matz was insistent it was the wrong choice. “He said, ‘It must be Solitude !’ He was absolutely right.”
Freezing temperatures and inhospitable studio environs aside, Candlemass had delivered a killer album. There was just one problem. Johan had agreed to appear on the record as a session singer but that was all. There was no chance he was going to tour in support of it.
This potentially ruinous situation proved to be a blessing in disguise. His replacement was Messiah Marcolin, a larger-than-life character with a paint-peeling voice and a shock of curly hair who would appear onstage in full monk’s robes performing his signature move, the ‘doom dance’ – a slo-mo stomp performed in time to Candlemass’s tectonic-plate riffs.
“We were this ultra-heavy band with a mad monk onstage,” says Leif. “Word spread pretty quickly.” Not quickly enough, though. Few people bought Epicus Doomicus Metallicus when it was released in June 1986 on Swedish indie label Black Dragon. “It bombed,” says Leif. “It didn’t sell much and we got dropped.”
But Candlemass weren’t about to quit. Dismal record sales aside, the band’s epic music – together with Messiah’s unique stage presence – was catching on, and they began building an audience. Solitude became the band’s calling card, in all its depressive glory.
“People started to talk about it,” says Leif. “At the time, it was about the lyrics or the weird note in the riff. Whenever we played it live, it always brought down the roof of every venue. People often say that Solitude is so slow, but if you listen to it, it has a beat that compels you to nod your head or stamp your foot or whatever. We did it on purpose. No song should be so slow that you can’t bang your head to it, and there’s something about Solitude that makes people go off and sing along to it. It has some kind of secret power.”
Set against hair metal ’s party-hard hedonism and thrash’s raging drunkenness, the bleakness of the song’s lyrics was part of its appeal. Whether intended or not, Solitude could be read as a glorification of suicide. It’s something Leif pushes back against.
“I don’t think it’s that depressing actually,” says Leif. “Of course you can read just about anything into any song if you want to, but it’s not a pro-suicide song,” he insists. “It’s just about how bad you can feel when you drank too much the night before. Simple as that. And it’s not my thing to write a suicide anthem. I’m a much more positive person than that. Lots of fans over the years have told me that they love it and feel uplifted after listening to it. And you can really headbang to it too.”
Candlemass followed up Solitude and Epicus Doomicus Metallicus with a string of equally classic albums, including 1987’s Nightfall and 1988’s Ancient Dreams . Since then, there have been multiple splits, hiatuses and reunions, and countless line-up changes.
Leif Edling has been the only constant, though original vocalist Johan Längqvist returned in 2016 as a full-time member, singing on 2019’s The Door To Doom and 2022’s Sweet Evil Sun . But it’s the epic anthem inspired by a monster hangover almost 40 years ago that remains both Candlemass’s greatest five minutes and 38 seconds and one of the foundational doom metal songs.
“All of a sudden we are legends and feel fucking old at the same time! Ha ha ha!” says Leif. “People say it’s a classic and I feel good about that. It means you did something worth remembering. And I never get tired of Solitude. I’m sure it will be played at my funeral.”
Dave Everley has been writing about and occasionally humming along to music since the early 90s. During that time, he has been Deputy Editor on Kerrang! and Classic Rock , Associate Editor on Q magazine and staff writer/tea boy on Raw , not necessarily in that order. He has written for Metal Hammer, Louder, Prog, the Observer, Select, Mojo , the Evening Standard and the totally legendary Ultrakill . He is still waiting for Billy Gibbons to send him a bottle of hot sauce he was promised several years ago.

Sweet evil sun.
Clocking in almost four decades, it’s no stretch to say that Grammy-nominated Swedish epic doom legends CANDLEMASS are still one of the heaviest metal bands on earth. As the godfathers of epic doom metal, the band defined the genre with releases such as Epicus Doomicus Metallicus (1986) and Nightfall (1987). Through their evil riffs, crushing rhythmic attack and dramatic vocals, they changed the landscape of metal worldwide. Reunited with outstanding original vocalist Johan Langquist, the band around founding member Leif Edling finds its way back to its roots and finally delivers the long awaited, earth-shaking new full-length album, Sweet Evil Sun , out November 18, 2022 via Napalm Records. After working on this massive piece of art for 18 months in total, with Sweet Evil Sun , CANDLEMASS brings back all the grandness of their early years, exploring themes of ambition and strife, hope and failure. Opening track “Wizard Of The Vortex” instantly casts a spell with a riff so powerful, the listener is immediately ensnared. Title track “Sweet Evil Sun” ...

It's all about the bands and their music!
Formation and early career (1984–1990)
After the breakup of his first band Nemesis, bassist Leif Edling started his own band under the name Candlemass with vocalist Johan Längqvist, drummer Matz Ekström, guitarist Mats “Mappe” Bjorkman and Klas Bergwall. Their first release, Epicus Doomicus Metallicus (1986), immediately secured their standing, positioning the band within metal circles, setting a milestone in the doom metal scene. Following the band’s debut album Längqvist was replaced by Messiah Marcolin. By the time the band entered the studio to record their second effort, Nightfall , in 1987, Bergwall and Ekström had left the band. Jan Lindhjoined the band on drums, and Lars Johansson joined the band on guitars following the completion of the album.
Candlemass’s next two albums were Ancient Dreams (1988) and Tales of Creation (1989). In 1990, the band released a live album Live . Shortly afterward, a dispute between the band members resulted in Messiah Marcolin’s departure.
New singer-era, hiatus and first reunion (1991–2003)
After Marcolin left, Candlemass recruited vocalist Thomas Vikström and recorded Chapter VI (1992). The band then toured in support of that album. By 1994, Candlemass had called it quits, partly because Chapter VI was unsuccessful and partially because Edling had formed another project under the name of Abstrakt Algebra. With Abstrakt Algebra not doing well, Leif suddenly recruited a new line-up under the name of Candlemass and recorded the album Dactylis Glomerata , which was a combination of songs for a new Abstrakt Algebra CD and some new material. A year later the album From the 13th Sun was released.
In 2002, the members of a past Candlemass line-up reunited. They performed some well-received live shows and released another live album. Other albums released by the reformed band were remastered versions of Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, Nightfall, Ancient Dreams , and Tales of Creation . A DVD called Documents of Doom was released as well. The band was working on a new album and recorded some new songs while searching for a record label when differences arose again, resulting in Candlemass disbanding a second time. In the meantime, Leif Edling started a new project, Krux, with former Abstrakt Algebra singer Mats Levénand two members of Entombed.
Second reunion (2004–2006)
In November 2004, the band announced that they had re-united for the second time. They had recorded a new album, named simply Candlemass , with the same line-up. It was released in May 2005. They won a Swedish Grammy for it in 2005.
In 2006 the band announced that a new album was in preparation, to be released sometime in 2007. In October 2006, after much uncertainty regarding Messiah Marcolin’s participation, it was settled that Messiah was out for good.
Robert Lowe era (2007–2012)
Candlemass found a new vocalist, Robert Lowe (Solitude Aeturnus), who recorded with the band’s ninth album King of the Grey Islands , which was released on June 22, 2007. The album is self-produced except for four songs produced by Andy Sneap.
On March 31, 2007, Candlemass celebrated a slightly delayed twentieth anniversary. To commemorate the celebration, original singer Johan Längqvist appeared live with the band for the first time. The event was recorded and later released as a DVD.
Mats “Mappe” Bjorkman was sentenced to serve two years behind bars for grand theft in March 2008. He has been convicted of stealing over 35,000 CDs and DVDs priced at around 3 million Sek (Around $500,000).
Candlemass worked on a tenth studio album in 2008. It was intended to be titled Hammer of Doom , but they renamed it to Death Magic Doom because the name coincided with a German festival. The album was scheduled to be released on March 27, 2009, but it was delayed until April 3, 2009.
In 2009, bassist Leif Edling told Soundshock that work on the next Candlemass album would likely begin before 2011. However, this plan fell through, and Leif had stated that the album’s release date was pushed back to 2012, in order for the band concentrate on the 25th anniversary of their 1986 debut Epicus Doomicus Metallicus .
On October 14, 2011, it was announced that Candlemass were signed to the Austrian label Napalm Records, who released their final studio album Psalms for the Dead in June 2012. Despite this, bassist Leif Edlinghas said that the band will not split up and they want to stop before they “get too old and start putting out half-lame albums.”
Mats Levén as new singer and future (2012–present)
On June 2, 2012, Candlemass announced via their website that Robert Lowe had left the band as vocalist, mainly due to the quality of the live performances and explained to be “a very difficult decision for the band”, and would be replaced for the band’s upcoming shows by longtime friend and collaborator of Candlemass, Mats Levén (of Yngwie Malmsteen, Therion, Treat and At Vance fame, among others). Levén had earlier worked with Leif Edling in Abstrakt Algebra and Krux and sang on demos from the Candlemass and King of the Grey Islands sessions, found on the box set Doomology . In addition, keyboardist Per Wiberg (ex-Opeth, Spiritual Beggars) would also join the band on stage for these live shows.
In January 2013, Candlemass was voted the greatest Swedish hard rock/metal band of all time by the writers of Sweden Rock Magazine, Scandinavia’s biggest hard rock magazine as well as Sweden’s biggest music magazine by circulation. They were featured in a list of the 100 greatest Swedish hard rock/metal bands of all time in a special jubilee edition, to celebrate the magazine’s 100th issue. In connection with this, it was also revealed that Candlemass, along with death metal band Entombed (No. 2 on the list), were to perform jointly at a special jubilee concert in Stockholm arranged by the magazine. In July 2014, Candlemass headlined the Väsby Rock Festival in their hometown Upplands Väsby.
Despite earlier claims that Psalms for the Dead would be their final album, bassist Leif Edling has stated that he is open to recording new music with Candlemass again. To coincide with the 30th anniversary of Epicus Doomicus Metallicus , Candlemass released the EP Death Thy Lover on June 3, 2016. Additionally on April 29, 2016 the band released a career-spanning coffee-table book. The book also contained two CDs containing the top picks by Leif Edling and Messiah Marcolin respectively, an CD with rare tracks from their early career (including the Witchcraft demo), and two DVDs with three live performances.

Dactylis Glomerata is the sixth studio album by Swedish doom metal band Candlemass , released in 1998. This was their first album released since their split in 1994.
The album was originally destined to be the second release by Candlemass main songwriter Leif Edling’s side-project Abstrakt Algebrabut , under request from the record label Music for Nations, it was converted in a Candlemass album. There were many musicians involved in the long process of recording, including members of the Abstrakt Algebra’s line-up, guitarist Michael Amott of Arch Enemyand Carcass fame and new singer Björn Flodkvist.
The music on the album lacks much of the epic doom sound of previous works and embraces a more experimental and progressive approach, with elements of stoner rock and space rock.
In 2006, it was reissued by GMR Music as a 2 CD edition. The second disc contains the previously unreleased album Abstrakt Algebra II, from which this album’s tracks derived.

This was the first Candlemass album not to feature Messiah Marcolin on vocals since their 1986 debut Epicus Doomicus Metallicus . On this one, Thomas Vikström took his place. After poor sales of the album, Candlemass subsequently disbanded in early 1994, only to reform three years later.

Tales of Creation is the fourth album by Swedish doom metal band Candlemass released in 1989 and reissued in 2001 with a bonus CD.
Some of the material from this album (“Dark Reflections”, “Under the Oak”, “Into the Unfathomed Tower”, “Somewhere in Nowhere” and “A Tale of Creation”) were originally recorded in 1985 by one of the earliest incarnations of Candlemass. “Under the Oak” is actually a remake of a song from their 1986 debut Epicus Doomicus Metallicus. The cover art is a modified Gustave Doré’s work “The Creation of Light”.
Tales of Creation was also the last to feature vocalist Messiah Marcolin for 15 years until he (temporarily) came back.

Ancient Dreams is the third album of Swedish doom metal band Candlemass , released in 1988 and reissued in 2001 by Powerline Records with bonus CD. The cover art of the album is a painting made by Thomas Cole, second in his series, “The Voyage of Life”, entitled “Youth”. Ancient Dreams was the first Candlemass album to chart in the US, debuting at No. 174 on the Billboard 200 album chart.
“Epistle 81” (Märk hur vår skugga), was written by Swedish poet/musician Carl Michael Bellman (1740 – 1795). “Incarnation of Evil” is actually a reworked version of the old Nemesis track “Black Messiah.”
The band is not happy with the album mix, and they place the blame on their (then) record label rush-producing the LP to coincide with a US tour.

Nightfall is the second studio album by the Swedish doom metal band Candlemass , released on 9 November 1987 through Axis Records. After being dropped from the label Black Dragon Records, Candlemass were the first band signed to Axis. The group had a new line-up from their previous album including vocalist Messiah Marcolin, whose decisions became instrumental during the production and release stages of the album.
Two singles were released from Nightfall: “Samarithan” and “At the Gallows End”. A music video was directed by for the song “Bewitched” by Jonas Åkerlund. The album has been re-released in various formats and was followed up by Ancient Dreams in 1988.
Epicus Doomicus Metallicus / 1986

- Crystal Ball
- Black Stone Wielder
- A Sorcerer’s Pledge
Epicus Doomicus Metallicus is the debut album of the Swedish doom metal band Candlemass . It was released June 10, 1986 on Black Dragon Records.
On its release, the album had a significantly different sound than other European heavy metal bands of the time, because of their use of operatic vocals mixed over slow and heavy guitar riffs. The album did not sell well on its initial release, which led to the group being dropped from the label during the same year. Since then, the album has been re-issued in several different formats. The album title Epicus Doomicus Metallicus is a Dog Latin rendering of Epic Doom Metal — the genre which the band pioneered and is most commonly identified.

Also included are additional LPs containing studio outtakes, plus rare rehearsal and demo recordings of the songs ‘Bewitched’ and ‘Battlecry’, all from the period leading up to the studio session. Plus a ‘Nightfall’ poster and an eight-page booklet featuring rare band images, and text originally featured in the ‘Behind the Wall of Doom’ book, written by Per Ola Nilsson. Each of the three LPs are presented in their own sleeves.
“NIGHTFALL is a record that has been very close to me for 35 years! People have talked about it for 35 years, and even loved it for 35 years!! Here’s a very impressive package with lots of extra stuff for the jubilee. Should satisfy any fan of metal and also all of you that already bought the album years ago!” – Leif Edling
Candlemass , formed by bassist and songwriter Leif Edling in Stockholm in 1984, is well known for its influential Epic Doom Metal sound, which itself evolved out of the masterful Black Sabbath. Following the legendary and genre-defining debut, ‘Epicus Doomicus Metallicus’ (1986), ‘Nightfall’ was released just one year later. Joining bass player and main songwriter Leif Edling was vocalist Jan Alfredo Marcolin, better known as Messiah Marcolin, who became a well-established and highly regarded vocalist throughout the Metal world, with his distinguishing and theatrical tones establishing him as an iconic presence in the band until his departure in the early 1990s.
‘Nightfall’ alongside ‘Epicus…’, is widely hailed as an all-time classic, instrumental in shaping the scene that still exists to this day with its unrivalled melodic Heavy Doom, with the creation of classic anthems such as ‘Dark are the Veils of Death’ and ‘Well of Souls’ and bands such as Darkthrone, Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride often hailing Candlemass as being among their primary inspirations.
Limited Edition 35-year anniversary 3LP deluxe out now on Peaceville
Special triple coloured vinyl set commemorating 35 years of the iconic debut of masterful doom metal, containing remastered audio, plus rare pre-epicus recordings from 1985 including the legendary ‘witchcraft’ demo. Also includes 8 page booklet, A2 poster, & letter print from founder Leif Edling.
Candlemass was formed by bassist and songwriter Leif Edling in Stockholm, Sweden in 1984, and is well known for its epic doom metal, having a great influence over a generation of the genre’s subsequent greats – Candlemass themselves taking a large influence from Black Sabbath. ‘Epicus Doomicus Metallicus’ is a true genre classic, with every track a monument of timeless and finely crafted Doom. This is one of the quintessential, definitive Doom Metal releases, immortalising the band in the annals of music history & creating the foundations of a legacy spanning over thirty-five years. Going against the grain of bands at the time using speed to bolster their metal with the ongoing rise of thrash in Europe and the US, Candlemass eschewed this direction, and formed a phenomenon of their own through the latter part of the decade and beyond with their slow & spellbinding atmospherics. ‘Epicus…’ was recorded at Thunderload Studios in 1986 and was released later that same year, with the grand and inspiring vocals for the debut handled by Johan Längqvist.
“EPICUS was our first, and perhaps also the best. I have no clue what we did there in the studio deep under the Stockholm subway, but some sort of magic was created. This is a record I would gladly be buried with!” Leif Edling
Now, marking 35 years of the iconic debut, this Candlemas endorsed, deluxe triple vinyl release includes a new remastered version of the album itself, as well as a collection of Candlemass ’ essential 1985 recordings preceding the ‘Epicus…’ session, in the form of the ‘Witchcraft’ demo plus the OAL studio recordings, & completed by the band’s Upplands Väsby rehearsal from November of 1985. Each vinyl is presented with its own sleeve, with the ‘Epicus Doomicus Metallicus’ LP containing a layout closely reflecting the original edition, with images used on its initial pressings. The set also includes an 8 page 12” booklet with images from the era and accompanying text, plus A2 poster, as well as a handwritten letter print from founder Leif Edling.
Double Candlemass releases coming to Peaceville to mark 30th anniversary including special commemorative book/audio set.
To coincide with the 30 th anniversary of the Swedish doom greats, particularly the legendary 1986 debut, Epicus Doomicus Metallicus , Peaceville Records have lined up 2 special Candlemass releases for 2016.
Commencing with a limited picture disc vinyl release of Epicus… for record store day on 16 th April, this will be followed on April 29 th by Behind the Wall of Doom ; an extensive 3CD/2DVD set with a 92 page book written by Per-Ola Nilsson, chronicling the rise and domination of the pioneering Swedes, in the quest of firmly stamping their mark on the metal world. Also included are demos plus rare and previously unheard tracks from the band’s 1985 rehearsals, alongside choice tracks from Candlemass’ early classic releases, as selected by Leif Edling and Messiah Marcolin. The set is completed with extensive DVD footage featuring several integral band performances over the decades, including the much sought and revered Dynamo performance from 1988.
Says Leif Edling on Behind the Wall of Doom : “We are celebrating 30 years as a band with this set, and as a result I’ve been digging out old photos I haven’t seen in 30 years, rehearsal tapes I didn’t know existed, and live shows I hardly remember playing! I’m sure our fans will drool over the Dynamo 88 DVD. It was our breakthrough gig and the stage is bursting with youthful energy! All in front of 30 000 ecstatic headbangers. Messiah trips over the monitor, my fake leather robe, Mappe’s classic white B.C. rich & a band going for the throat! We also present to you Bang Your Head 2005. It’s raw and intense, and shows a band back in the saddle with absolutely nothing to prove. I haven’t seen this myself since we played the actual show, so it certainly brings back fond memories!
It all comes with a 92 page 33 x 33 coffee table book. Loads of rare and never before seen photos from EPICUS up to recent years. Per-Ola Nilsson has written a very ambitious, comprehensive history of the band, complete with new interviews, cool facts and no bull. It’s all there…warts ‘n’ all!! Lemmy R.I.P. “
Candlemass was formed by bassist and songwriter Leif Edling in Stockholm, Sweden in 1984, and they are well known for their epic doom metal and having a great influence over a generation of the genre’s subsequent greats – Candlemass themselves taking a large influence from Black Sabbath.

Candlemass biography, after the breakup of his first band nemesis, bassist leif edling started his own band under the name candlemass with vocalist johan längqvist, guitarist mats mappe bjorkman, and drummer matz ekström. their first release, epicus doomicus metallicus (1986), immediately secured their standing, positioning the band within metal circles, setting a milestone in the doom metal scene. längqvist only recorded that one album with candlemass, however. his successor as frontman, messiah marcolin, joined the band for their second effort, nightfall, in 1987. two other new members appeared on this album: lead guitarist lars johansson and drummer jan lindh. read more candlemass’s next two albums were ancient dreams (1988) and tales of creation (1989). in 1990, the band released a live album. shortly afterward, a dispute between the band members resulted in messiah marcolin’s departure. after marcolin left, candlemass recruited vocalist thomas vikström and recorded chapter vi (1992). the band then toured in support of that album. by 1994, candlemass had called it quits, partly because chapter vi was unsuccessful and partially because edling had formed another project under the name of abstrakt algebra. with abstrakt algebra not doing well, leif suddenly recruited a new line-up under the name of candlemass and recorded the album dactylis glomerata, which was a combination of songs for a new abstrakt algebra cd and some new material. a year later the album from the 13th sun was released. in 2002, the members of a past candlemass line-up reunited. they performed some well-received live shows[citation needed] and released another live album. other albums released by the reformed band were remastered versions of epicus doomicus metallicus, nightfall, ancient dreams, and tales of creation. a dvd called documents of doom was released as well. the band was working on a new album and recorded some new songs while searching for a record label when differences arose again, resulting in candlemass disbanding a second time. in the meantime, leif edling started a new project, krux, with former abstrakt algebra singer mats leven and two members of entombed. in november 2004, the band announced that they had re-united for the second time. they had recorded a new album, named simply candlemass, with the same line-up. it was released in may 2005. they won a swedish grammy for it in 2005. in 2006 the band announced that a new album was in preparation, to be released sometime in 2007. in october 2006, after much uncertainty regarding messiah marcolin’s participation, it was settled that messiah was out for good. candlemass found a new vocalist, robert lowe (solitude aeturnus), who recorded with the band’s ninth album king of the grey islands, which was released on june 22, 2007. the album is self-produced except for four songs produced by andy sneap. on march 31, 2007, candlemass celebrated a slightly delayed twentieth anniversary. to commemorate the celebration, original singer johan längqvist appeared live with the band for the first time. the event was recorded and later released as a dvd. candlemass worked on a tenth studio album in 2008. it was intended to be titled hammer of doom, but they renamed it to death magic doom because the name coincided with a german festival. the album was scheduled to be released on march 27, 2009, but it was delayed until april the 3rd 2009. in 2009, bassist leif edling told soundshock that work on the next candlemass album would likely begin before 201. however, this plan fell through, and leif stated that the album’s release date was to go back to 2012, in order for the band concentrate on the 25th anniversary of their 1986 debut ‘epicus doomicus metallicus’..

CANDLEMASS’ latest full-length, the Marcus Jidell-produced The Door To Doom , follows the plot line mastermind, songwriter and bass player Leif Edling established in the past years: epic world class doom metal that relies on slow mammoth riffing. The album features the Grammy-nominated track “Astorolus – The Great Octopus” , featuring legendary Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi (watch the official music video HERE ). CANDLEMASS swiftly followed up in March 2020 with their latest EP, The Pendulum , featuring a fine selection of never-before-heard, unused tracks cut from the The Door To Doom recording sessions. The Pendulum perfectly showcases that these timeless Swedish pioneers are the undisputed kings of epic doom, featuring singles “The Pendulum” (listen HERE ) and “Porcelain Skull” (listen HERE ). Leading the listener through a maze of frenzied riffing, accented by Johan Langquist’s distinctive vocals, the EP reinforces the melancholy sound that has proven CANDLEMASS to be a heavy metal staple.

THE SKULL formed in 2012 by ex- TROUBLE members Eric Wagner (vocals), Ron Holzner (bass) and Jeff Olson (drums) along with guitarist Lothar Keller ( SACRED DAWN ) to “continue the sounds and spirit of TROUBLE – past, present, future.” The band released their critically acclaimed debut “ For Those Which Are Asleep” in 2014 via Tee Pee Records , and four years later, their sophomore release “ The Endless Road Turns Black” followed, also through Tee Pee Records . THE SKULL toured countless times around the world and changed a few members over the years.
Eric Wagner passed away on August 22nd, 2021 from Covid pneumonia contracted while on tour with THE SKULL in early August 2021. THE SKULL , with the help of a few all-star friends, proceeded to play a few memorial shows which prompted Holzner and Keller to carry on with this group of talented musicians. The band now features Karl Agell ( C.O.C. , BLIND ) on vocals, Henry Vasquez ( SAINT VITUS , SPIRIT CARAVAN , LUCIFER ) on drums and Scott Little ( LEADFOOT , BLIND ) on guitar.
THE SKULL are currently in preproduction on their third record performing under the LEGIONS OF DOOM moniker, with Scott Reagers ( SAINT VITUS ) as second vocalist.
Black Road is a four-piece sultry stoner/doom band from Chicago, IL. Founding members Tim M. and Suzi Uzi write the riffs and lyrics, with new member Trey Wedgeworth (bass) and newest member Danny Garcia (drums) creating a heavy and harmonious rhythm as the backbone. Formed in the summer of 2015, Black Road has had lineup changes that have pushed the band to become stronger and more focused. Just before acquiring then-new members Robert and Casey in fall of 2016, Black Road signed with DHU Records (Netherlands) for a vinyl and cassette deal. In early 2017, they signed with BloodRock Records (Italy) for the CD release. After almost one full year of gaining their new bassist and drummer, Black Road was finally ready to reveal their self-titled debut Black Road – EP (10/6/2017). One year later, a digital single with a runtime of over ten minutes was released: Witch of the Future . The single album release with two tracks is titled “Blood On The Blade” (4/5/2019), and the 7” vinyl sold out in 20 minutes in the US and overseas at DHU Records. “Witch of the Future”, the debut full-length attempt, was released on Halloween 2019 with the same two killer labels. It features a completely new recording of the song “Witch of the Future”, and a brand new mix for “Blood on the Blade”. A repress on “Witch of the Future” was released in September 2020, with a limited edition translucent red vinyl via DHU Records and The Company. This second pressing (sold out) featured new artwork.
CANDLEMASS Announces March 2023 U.S. West Coast Tour
Legendary Swedish doom metallers CANDLEMASS have announced their first U.S. dates of 2023. The band will embark on a West Coast run in March in support of its latest album, "Sweet Evil Sun" , which came out in November via Napalm Records . The week-long trek will kick off on March 10 in Seattle, Washington and conclude on March 17 in San Diego, California.
Tour dates:
March 10 - Seattle, WA @ Substation March 11 - Portland, OR @ Star Theater March 14 - San Francisco, CA @ DNA March 16 - Los Angeles, CA @ 1720 March 17 - San Diego, CA @ Brick By Brick
In the works for 18 months, "Sweet Evil Sun" sees CANDLEMASS bringing back all the grandness of the band's early years, exploring themes of ambition and strife, hope and failure. Opening track "Wizard Of The Vortex" instantly casts a spell with a riff so powerful, the listener is immediately ensnared. The dark, classic rock-tinged Nordic metal anthem "Scandinavian Gods" reveals a perfect musical interaction between slow and heavy drums, droning guitars and majestic vocals as they convey mysterious tales of Scandinavian mythology to the next generation of doom lovers. Jennie-Ann Smith ( AVATARIUM ) lends her beautiful voice to the theatrical, grim "When Death Sighs" , creating a shimmering, intermingled chorus duet eventually backed by rising organs and a marching rhythm. The haunting atmosphere is highlighted by an amazing guitar solo that reads like a story as it bends and descends, marking the sign of death on the listener's door. It comes as no surprise that, alongside the band, renowned producer Marcus Jidell captured the band's massive, smoky guitar tones, powerful drums and larger-than-life vocals, offering a truly unique, high quality sonic experience. The artwork for "Sweet Evil Sun" was illustrated with the skilled hand of Erik Rovanperä , the architect behind CANDLEMASS 's visual style since "Psalms For The Dead" (2012).
Recorded at NOX studio in Stockholm, Sweden, "Sweet Evil Sun" impressively showcases that, after almost 40 years in the game, the creativity of these Swedish doom masters sees no bounds. Through the power of wall-shaking riffs, incredible vocal performances and the blood and spirit of classic heavy metal, "Sweet Evil Sun" shines as a masterpiece of impending legend that truly honors the epic doom metal cult of CANDLEMASS .
CANDLEMASS founder and bassist Leif Edling stated about the new album: " 'Sweet Evil Sun' is about hope, striving, adoration and failure. It's about all the personal battles that you have, but also the never-ending decay of humanity.
"The record took over a year to make and there's not a bad track on it! We had a fantastic time recording it and are really looking forward to the release. It's doom, it's metal! It is the essence of CANDLEMASS put into one album."
As the godfathers of epic doom metal, CANDLEMASS defined the genre with releases such as "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus" (1986) and "Nightfall" (1987). Through their evil riffs, crushing rhythmic attack and dramatic vocals, they changed the landscape of metal worldwide. Led by Edling , CANDLEMASS reunited with Johan Längqvist in 2018, 32 years after the singer performed on "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus" .
"Sweet Evil Sun" is the follow-up to CANDLEMASS 's twelfth studio album, "The Door To Doom" , which was released in February 2019 via Napalm Records . "The Door To Doom" was CANDLEMASS 's first full-length album since the aforementioned "Psalms For The Dead" , which featured singer Robert Lowe , who left the band just days before its release. He was replaced by Mats Levén , who fronted the band until Längqvist rejoined in late 2018.
Längqvist originally exited CANDLEMASS after "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus" and was replaced by Messiah Marcolin .

Amateur Kris Kim, 16, making TOUR debut at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson
Change Text Size
16-year-old English amateur Kris Kim hopes to replicate that success, this time on the PGA TOUR.
Kim, who beat Russell 5&4 in a singles match at the 2023 Junior Ryder Cup, is making his PGA TOUR debut this week at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson. Kim, a CJ Group ambassador, received a sponsor exemption into the event.
“I found out about a month ago. Yeah, it was a crazy phone call,” Kim said, smiling. “I was over the moon for the rest of the day.”
Kim displayed a remarkable maturity, similar to Russell, as he spoke to the media Wednesday at TPC Craig Ranch. Kim was composed and succinct, answering questions about his background, earliest golfing memories and possible nerves in making his pro debut. There was no wide-eyed reaction to the scene, despite it being the biggest week of his young golfing life.
Kris Kim on playing in his first PGA TOUR tournament
That wisdom can be credited largely to his mother Ji-Hyun Suh, one of the Korean pioneers who competed on the LPGA in the 1990s. Suh is Kim’s swing coach and introduced him to the game at the age of 5.
“(I) always used to watch her, and then ended up falling in love with it myself,” Kim said. Kim’s whole family, including Suh, will be the ones watching this week.
Kim’s life outside golf looks similar to most 16-year-olds. A native of Surrey, England, Kim has a few exams next week that he’s trying not to think about. He golfs mostly on the weekends, prioritizing school from Monday to Friday. On the golf course, he’s anything but a typical teenager.
In 2023, Kim won the Boys’ Amateur Championship, the European Boys’ Individual Championship and the McGregor Trophy. He is the first amateur golfer to be sponsored by CJ Group, which sponsors numerous pro golfers, including Sungjae Im, Si Woo Kim, KH Lee and Byeong Hun An. Kim is the first European amateur to sign an NIL contract with Under Armour and the first British amateur to sign an NIL deal with TaylorMade. He went undefeated in the Junior Ryder Cup at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club, claiming 3.5 points as Europe won the event for the first time since 2006.
That experience in Rome has made Kim confident in handling the nerves this week.
“That was really good for me because that was probably the first time I ever played in front of a crowd,” Kim said. “Yeah, got a taste for it for the first time.”
His aspirations extend far beyond gaining experience, though that will be a valuable component of the week. Kim isn’t counting himself out of contention.
“My first aim is to make the cut and then see what happens. At the end of the day, I’m one of 144 competitors and we’ve all got a chance,” he said.
Kim tees off at 9:02 a.m. local time alongside Max Greyserman and Norman Xiong.
Morgan Wallen won't appear in Nashville court amid three-night Nissan Stadium concert run
Award-winning country music performer Morgan Wallen, accused of throwing a chair off the roof of a Nashville honky-tonk, waived his right to appear in court to answer for the charges he's facing, the Davidson County District Attorney's Office said.
Wallen is scheduled to begin a three-night stint at Nissan Stadium Thursday and was scheduled to be in court Friday morning. His attorney is still expected to appear for the hearing.
Wallen was charged April 7 with three counts of reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon, each a Class E felony, and one count of disorderly conduct, a Class C misdemeanor.
Wallen was on the roof-top of Chief's, the six-story Nashville honky-tonk owned by Eric Church, at about 11 p.m. when he threw a chair over the railing to the street below, according to his arrest affidavit. Several Nashville police officers were standing in front of the bar when the chair landed just feet from them, according to the affidavit.
Video footage from the bar showed Wallen "lunging and throwing an object over the roof," the affidavit said.
Wallen was booked in the Downtown Detention Center and released at about 3:30 a.m. Monday.
On April 19, Wallen took to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, to release his first statement on the incident.
"I didn't feel right publicly checking in until I made amends with some folks," he wrote. "I’ve touched base with Nashville law enforcement, my family, and the good people at Chief’s. I'm not proud of my behavior, and I accept responsibility."
Morgan Wallen's history on Lower Broadway
The April incident is not Wallen's first brush with the law.
In May 2020, Wallen was arrested on charges of public intoxication and disorderly conduct after he was kicked out of Kid Rock's Big Ass Honky Tonk Rock N' Roll Steakhouse for "kicking glass items."
Police said he verbally fought with passersby.
"Officers gave (Wallen) several opportunities to walk away with his friends, but he refused to walk away," police said at the time, noting that he was "a danger to himself and the public."
Wallen's 2020 charges were later dismissed.
