Visit Cape Horn to soak up the mystique that goes with this historic place.

Like an ascent of Mount Everest, sailing around Cape Horn earns you a place amongst the elite and with good reason. Often wreathed in fog and smashed by towering seas, the southern-most headland of Cape Horn Island marks where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans collide.

Consider that prevailing conditions feature 200 days of gale, waves that rise more than 20 metres and the odd iceberg and you begin to understand the pride of “Cape Horners”.

Our voyage spans a minimum of six days with safe anchorages each evening. Starting in Ushuaia in Argentina, we sail down the Beagle Channel and turn south around Isla Navarino to Isla Herschel where we wait for the best conditions to attempt to round the Horn.

Australis provides the perfect viewing platform for a sea rich in fur seals, porpoises and whales and the graceful, mesmerising flight of the black-browed and wandering albatross.

We explore the rugged beauty of the islands, from stony beaches to sphagnum bogs and hike into the silent beauty of Antarctic beech forests that become more stunted the higher we climb.

If conditions allow, we land on Isla Hornos to visit the Chilean naval station and admire the magnificent albatross sculpture, a memorial to the many mariners seduced by Cape Horn.

The crew was very resourceful and always worked to accomplish the goals of the film production and the Australis is an incredible work boat. It’s comfortable yet capable of handling diving, topside filming and drone work at the same time. It was one of the best live-aboard shoots I’ve been apart of and that’s all thanks to the Australis, Ben and it’s crew. Thanks for the amazing adventure to Antarctica!

CRUISE TO CAPE HORN: ACCOMPLISH THE DREAM OF THE OLD SAILORS

Where the land meets the immensity of the biggest oceans of our planet, where wildlife is at our feet and Antarctica right above the horizon…this is the place where the bravest sailors performed their most famous feats. A once in a lifetime and unique adventure awaits in the Punta Arenas to Ushuaia Cruise (or vice-versa, because it can also be done from Ushuaia to Punta Arenas).

Humans & Nature

The furthest corner of our planet intrigued explorer for centuries and defied those who thought could conquer and tame its wildlands. As told by ancient expeditionaries, it was right on this region where incredibly tall and muscular natives, the Yaganes, use to live and wander, barefooted and practically naked, surviving on whale hunting from its canoes.

In the present day, the harsh spirit of the first inhabitants of this southern part of Argentina and Chile remains, as well as its exotic landscapes and animals. Far from the struggles of wildlife, we can enjoy both the history and natural beauty of Patagonia in a cozy and modern cruise.

Exploring the Beagle Channel

Discovered in the nineteenth century by a British expedition, the Beagle Channel is where the adventure begins (if starting from Ushuaia). With an extension of 280 kilometers, the channel connects the Atlantic and the Pacific Ocean. Its unique location and features make this geographical area very peculiar: depending on the area it can be surprisingly narrow (reaching less than 2 kilometers wide from coast to coast) or shallow, with only 14 meters depth water. At the same time, in other regions of the Beagle, the sea can reach 300 meters in depth.

Cape Horn, the wildest of them all

This stunning location used to be visited only by savvy and courageous sailors. Luckily, nowadays the expedition can be experienced by anyone.

punta-arenas-to-ushuaia-cruise

Cape Horn is considered the southernmost point of the Americas and is also famous for the strong winds and huge waves that can be seen in this region. It’s also famous because Charles Darwin based part of his work The Origin Of Species here. ‘The evening was calm and bright, and we enjoyed a fine view of the surrounding isles. Cape Horn, however, demanded his tribute, and before night sent us a gale of wind directly in our teeth’, said Darwin about his encounter with the cape, back in 1832. That being said, it’s important to notice that eventually, the harsh conditions and unexpected changes in the weather forecast might force visitors to modify a thing or two in their schedules.

Continueing with the Cruise and leaving Cape Horn behind (if starting from Ushuaia), we reach Wulaia Bay. The Wulaia Bay is a very calm spot ideal for anchorage due to its protection from the winds and calm waters. This made it an ideal place for the Yaganes to eventually settle. Experts believed that the tribe migrated from the north of what today is Tierra del Fuego to this area, in fact, plenty of archaeological remains where found in Navarino Island.

The Yaganes were the most southern population of natives in the history of mankind and it believed that they never encounter other civilizations until the nineteenth century when European explorers begin to sail the waters of Patagonia.

According to numerous records, British investigators got to meet the Yaganes and some of them were taken to London as these men of science planned to teach them the language. They also tried to settle Christian missions and educate the natives in their religious faith, unsuccessfully.

Visiting a city of ice

Not as glamorous as the 5 th but still very fancy and the only of its kind, the commonly know ‘Glaciers avenue’ is also part of the itinerary. Huge walls of ice emerge from the sea only to grow into cold mountains that resemble white and blue natural buildings, creating this particularly exotic location in the south of Chile.

The Pía and Garibaldi glaciers can be not only seen but explored. Once on the Pía fjord, the panoramic view can be reached by foot. Every year and, like most glaciers, the Pía loses about 10 meters, so landslides and detachments are often witnessed.

On the other hand, the Garibaldi glacier is a natural structure of colossal proportions white as the snow. The sun reflecting on the water and on every inch of ice bathes this place with the brightest light possible and makes it mandatory to wear sunglasses.

More Fjords and Glaciers

A few kilometers ahead on the Cockburn Channel, more glaciers can be seen but now on the Agostini Sound. Onboard of zodiac boats that surf the water at high speed, crossing the sea allows adventurers to get right at the foot of the Aguila and Condor glacier.

Named after the Italian explorer, Alberto Maria de Agostini, this fjord divides the Darwin Mountain Range into two branches: the Cordón Navarro in the south, and the Monte Buckland in the north.

History, ice and wind aside, during the entire trip the guests will not only enjoy the comfort of a top of the line accommodation in a modern and safe cruise, but also have the ability to connect with raw nature. On the way from Argentina to Chile, condors can be seen while it is also possible to walk around with penguins (from october till march).

The walking with penguins experience is only on the itinerary that starts in Ushuaia and finishes in Punta Arenas. If the itinerary is the one from Punta Arenas to Ushuaia, penguins can be seen as well, but from a zodiac right in front of Tucker Islets (in this scenario, if you want to walk with penguins you can do it before the Cruise, in Punta Arenas, or after the trip, in Ushuaia).

The 10 Best Things to Do on Cape Horn, Chile

A Visit to the End of the World

cape horn tours

 Danita Delimont / Getty Images

Cape Horn is located on Hornos Island in Chile's Tierra del Fuego region, and is the point where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans meet. In the 19th century, clipper ships sailed around this part of the world on voyages between Europe and Asia, though frequent storms in the region have left a scattered trail of more than 800 sunken ships and thousands to perish in their wake.

Today, while most cargo and cruise ships use the Panama Canal to cross between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, expedition cruise lines sail by this northern section of the infamous Drake Passage on routes to or from  Antarctica . If you're lucky enough to be on board, a short layover at the Chilean naval station (wind and weather permitting) can offer a glimpse of the region's maritime past. Go ashore to see the lighthouse, chapel, and the Cape Horn Memorial. You can also sign a guest book and get your passport stamped for a memorable souvenir of your visit.

"Round" Cape Horn on a Cruise Through the Drake Passage

The journey to the end of the earth is no small feat, as the seas surrounding Cape Horn are dangerous and the weather adverse. If you prefer to simply pass by Cape Horn during a larger sailing, several cruise lines like Holland America and Celebrity Cruises, among others, offer the chance to round Cape Horn on the journey from Santiago to Montevideo or Buenos Aires.

For a closer look at Cape Horn, try booking an adventure cruise, which gives you a different experience than that of a traditional cruise by offering themed packages centered around the outdoors and nature. Companies like Swoop Patagonia and Victory Adventure Expeditions offer adventure cruises that sail between Ushuaia and Punta Arenas, with a stop at Cape Horn. Count on wildlife and glacier viewings, as well as plenty of activities that take you off the beaten path.

Take a Scenic Flight Over Cape Horn

If the idea of sailing through part of the dreaded Drake Passage makes you sweat, consider booking a tour from Punta Arenas that includes a scenic flight over Cape Horn through a company like Far South Expeditions . Alternatively, you could charter a flight from Punta Arenas, which might be more affordable if you're traveling with a group or can gather some fellow travelers to help foot the bill.

Climb the Cliff

Ruben Earth / Getty Images

When visiting Cape Horn by boat, you'll access the island by your cruise ship's rigid inflatable boats (RIBs). Once there, climb across a rocky beach and up several flights of slippery steps to reach the top of the cliff. The scramble across the beach and the hike up the stairs isn't easy and is not recommended for older people or those with disabilities. Still, the view of the sea and surrounding island makes the trek worth the effort. Let your ship's tour guide direct you and keep small children in check.

Explore Hornos Island

Ruben Earth / Getty Images

Visitors are asked to stay on the wooden walkways that crisscross Hornos Island and lead to all the sites on the treeless headland. These walkways protect the fragile peat-bog ecosystem and keep visitors from tracking mud into the sites and then back to their cruise ships. Since the region gets a lot of rain, the walkways can be slippery, so it's best to wear sturdy, waterproof boots or shoes with rubber tread. Allow about two or three hours to walk around Hornos Island on the walkways and get your passport stamped.

Visit the Lighthouse

Daniela Goulart / Flickr / CC BY-NC-ND 2.0

Cape Horn has two lighthouses: One is at the Chilean Naval Station, which is the largest and most accessible to visitors. A Chilean family resides year-round on the island in the buildings nearby. While you can't go inside their abode, just seeing and contemplating the residence itself is quite moving, as it offers a glimpse of what it must be like to be the only human inhabitants of Cape Horn. For most of the year, this family has to endure severe weather and their only supplies come from passing cruise ships, making everyday rations and amenities few and far between.

The second, smaller one —coming in at 13-feet-high—is located about a mile away from the naval lighthouse on the actual "horn." The smaller of the two lighthouses is not readily accessible, but cruise ships (or their RIBs) can pass by it so guests can get a peek.

Visit the Stella Maris Chapel

Steven Kenworthy

Tiny Stella Maris Chapel is situated next to the main lighthouse at the Chilean Naval Station. The one-room chapel is only about a dozen feet long, but its doors are often open, welcoming visitors. Step inside to pay respects to the many sailors who lost their way or imagine the scene of past mariners who stopped in for a moment of prayer, thankfulness, or silence.

Take the Walkway to the Cape Horn Memorial

A 1,000-foot wooden walkway leads straight to the Cape Horn Memorial, which was added to Hornos Island in 1992. The Chilean section of the Cape Horn Captains Brotherhood sponsored the erection of this memorial that honors the thousands of mariners who lost their lives in the waters around the Cape. Take a jaunt to the marble plaque to read its blessing. On a particularly mild day, go slowly, as the scenery is definitely worth taking in.

Pay Your Respects at the Cape Horn Monument

Alan White / Getty Images

The Cape Horn Monument features a flying albatross, which are commonly seen in the southern ocean and are a symbol of the Cape Horn Captains Brotherhood. Designed by a Chilean artist, the monument is constructed of 22-feet-high steel plates and made to withstand winds of 200 miles per hour. To build it, members of the Chilean Marine Corps used an amphibious exercise to transport over 120 tons of materials from two barges to shore.

See the "Actual" Cape Horn

Wayne Walton / Getty Images

A visit to Hornos Island wouldn't be complete without seeing the "actual" horn, the point where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans meet. This narrow spit of land is surrounded by shallow and rocky waters and is not readily accessible by foot or boat. Still, your captain may point it out as you round the bend or, if you're lucky and the weather is nice, the conductor of your RIB can try to get close.

Get Your Passport Stamped

If your cruise ship visits Cape Horn, take your passport ashore and get it stamped. The family that operates the Chilean lighthouse will be happy to perform this service for you (just make sure to be respectful during your visit). The passport stamp makes a great souvenir and is one that baffles immigration officials around the world, as it is an unusual sight.

The Best Things to Do in Puerto Williams, Chile to Experience Cape Horn's Remote Nature

If the world were flat, the far southern tip of Chile would be just the spot to peer over the edge. The epicenter of this rugged destination is Puerto Williams of Navarino Island, on the nearly pristine Cape Horn archipelago . This frontier locale of 2,000 hearty residents faces Beagle Channel, the narrow waterway named after 19 th century British explorer Charles Darwin’s iconic ship. Billed as the world’s southernmost city, Puerto Williams is developing new maritime and airport infrastructure to boost sustainable tourism and restore its legacy as the gateway to Antarctica, a slice of which is part of Chile. The city also aspires to become a hub for scientific research across the UNESCO Cape Horn Biosphere Reserve .

Modern-day explorers will discover a rich, untrampled landscape right around Puerto Williams itself, whether navigating through icy fjords or spotting crimson-headed Magellanic woodpeckers in sub-Antarctic primary forests. Boasting a more laid back, less commercial profile than the Argentinian city of Ushuaia across the channel, Puerto Williams is the ideal destination for intrepid travelers eager for immersion into a raw natural realm.

Sliversea offerings to Cape Horn include Chilean coast itineraries and 30-day trips to the Antarctic Peninsula and Falkland Islands.

Getting there via cruise

For travelers looking for outdoor adventure without ditching creature comforts, small cruises that embark from Chile’s central coast port city of Valparaiso are a posh option. Relying on the local Chilean naval base for logistics, Puerto Williams has long hosted turnarounds of passengers heading into or out of Antarctica. The first phase of a new multipurpose dock now under construction will facilitate the arrival of slightly larger ships with around 200 passengers by the end of the year.

Silversea, a unit of Royal Caribbean , plies Chile’s long coast to Puerto Williams. Silversea offers an indulgent month-long option that reaches the Antarctic Peninsula plus the Falkland Islands and other far-flung South Atlantic islands. Prime your camera for sightings of king penguins, seals and whales wolloping through the frigid seas, while majestic albatross soar overhead and cormorants flap across choppy waters.

Travelers looking for more time on land might consider flying into Puerto Williams. Chile’s DAP Airlines offers regular one-hour flights from Punta Arenas, capital of Chile’s Magallanes and Antarctic region that encompasses Cape Horn. The carrier serves remote destinations in southern Chile, including King George Island in Antarctica and Ushuaia. DAP also offers helicopter tours to soak in Cape Horn’s mountains and imposing glaciers from the crystal clear skies. Charter options are available too.

Budget-minded travelers might ride the 32-hour Yaghan ferry from Punta Arenas, operated by Chilean firm Tabsa . Outfitted like a long-distance bus, half of the no-fuss vessel is carved out for vehicles and provisions shipped into Puerto Williams twice a week. Ferry riders are rewarded with close-ups of Cape Horn’s best-known glaciers and breathtaking views of the Milky Way from open decks.

When to visit for the best natural wonder

Most visitors arrive in Puerto Williams in the southern hemisphere summer months starting in November. In contrast to the more terrestrial far northern hemisphere, the vast southern seas help to keep temperatures here from dropping too sharply even in winter, a tendency that’s reinforced by climate change. Bear in mind, the summer months offer long stretches of daylight to squeeze the most out of a remote destination that’s not easy to reach. Winds tend to ease in the winter months though, and the surrounding mountains are snow-capped year-round. No matter when you visit, pack a parka, toasty hat and gloves, and sturdy waterproof shoes. You’ll want sunglasses and binoculars too.

Once on shore, visit the government-run Sernatur tourism office in central Puerto Williams to arrange hikes through the snow-capped Dientes de Navarino mountains, horseback riding and sport-fishing. Bird-watching is a newer focus. The National Audubon Society is helping promote sustainable avitourism in conjunction with the Cape Horn International Center (CHIC) , perched on a hill overlooking the channel.

Well-equipped sailboats offer dreamy half-day to 10-day tours though the fjords and tundra-swept islands of Cape Horn. Take a slow walk down to the local dock to see colorful fishing boats that harvest luscious centolla , or king crab. On the outskirts of Puerto Williams, visit the Yaghan Indigenous community of Villa Ukika for woven baskets and other handicrafts. Elsewhere, history buffs can duck into old military foxholes and meander through an open-air museum of relics left over from Chile’s near-war with Argentina in the late 1970s.

View of a town.

Downtown Puerto Williams' family-run restaurants are ideal for king crab empanadas and local grilled fish—all washed down with a pisco sour.

Where to stay and eat

There are only a few modest accommodations and family-run restaurants around Puerto Williams. Check out the charming Hotel Fío Fío near downtown Puerto Williams. It’s worth chatting with the hotel’s gracious proprietor Maurice Van De Maele, an anthropologist who heads the local tourism chamber and has lived here for nearly four decades.

A couple of kilometers outside of town is Lakutaia Lodge , named after a Yaghan woman. The hotel closed during the pandemic and served as a quarantine facility for travelers to Antarctica. Although the hotel remains officially closed, groups can still arrange for ad hoc stays. A new 150-bed expansion is planned for the site. Further afield is Errante Ecolodge where you can soak in a hot tub watching the sunset from a stunning bluff.

Puerto Williams has only a couple of year-round restaurants, Dientes de Navarino and Resto del Sur . A few others open during the summer months. Among the homestyle offerings are king crab empanadas and grilled Austral merluza. Wash down your meal with a pisco sour or Subantarctica golden ale, or pick up a hot cocoa at Notro Patagonia Emporio .

Puerto Williams has no taxis or regular public transport, although informal private options abound. Thanks to the thriving navy base, fiber-optic internet signal is robust downtown. There are modest grocery stores, but don’t count on too many choices as the town still relies on biweekly shipments from the mainland for most provisions. Local greenhouses supply fresh lettuce and herbs. Make sure to pack whatever medicines you might need.

Detailed Itinerary

After a welcoming toast and introduction of captain and crew, the ship departs for one of the most remote corners of planet Earth. During the night we traverse the Beagle Channel and cross from Argentina into Chilean territorial waters. The lights of Ushuaia disappear as we turn into the narrow Murray Channel between Navarino and Hoste islands.

Day 2-Cape Horn - Wulaia Bay

Around the break of dawn, the Australis cruise crosses Nassau Bay and enters the remote archipelago that comprises Cape Horn National Park. Weather and sea conditions permitting, we shall go ashore on the windswept island that harbors legendary Cape Horn (Cabo de Hornos). Discovered in 1616 by a Dutch maritime expedition — and named after the town of Hoorn in West Friesland — Cape Horn is a sheer 425-meter (1,394-foot) high rocky promontory overlooking the turbulent waters of the Drake Passage. For many years it was the only navigation route between the Pacific and Atlantic, and was often referred to as the “End of the Earth.” The park was declared a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2005. The Chilean navy maintains a permanent lighthouse on the island, staffed by a lightkeeper and his family, as well as the tiny Stella Maris Chapel and modern Cape Horn Monument (currently awaiting repair after being damaged by fierce winds).

Sailing back across Nassau Bay, we anchor at fabled Wulaia Bay, one of the few places in the archipelago where the human history is just as compelling as the natural environment. Originally the site of one of the region’s largest Yámana aboriginal settlements, the bay was described by Charles Darwin and sketched by Captain FitzRoy in the 1830s during their voyages on HMS Beagle. This area is also renowned for its mesmerizing beauty and dramatic geography. After a visit to the Australis-sponsored museum in the old radio station — which is especially strong on the Yámana people and European missionaries in the area — passengers have a choice of three hikes (of increasing degrees of difficulty) that ascend the heavily wooded mountain behind the bay. On all of these you stroll through an enchanted Magellanic forest of lengas, coigües, canelos and ferns to reach panoramic viewpoints overlooking the bay.

Day 3 - Pía Glacier – Garibaldi Glacier

Overnight we continue our Patagonia glacier tour around the western end of Tierra del Fuego via the very narrow Gabrial Channel, Magdalena Channel and Cockburn Channel. After rounding the remote Brecknock Peninsula, the Australis cruise tacks eastward and enters the Beagle Channel again. By morning we are entering Pia Fjord and boarding the Zodiacs for a shore excursion to Pia Glacier. After disembarking we take a short hike to gain a panoramic view of the spectacular glacier, which extends from the mountaintops down to the sea or a longer much more difficult walk up a lateral moraine of the old Pia Glacier.

No one knows for certain how the hulking mass of snow and ice got its feminine moniker, but one theory says it was named for Princess Maria Pia of Savoy (1847-1911), daughter of the Italian king.

Making our way further west along the Beagle Channel, we enter another long fjord and drop anchor near Garibaldi Glacier for another shore excursion. Garibaldi is one of only three glaciers in Patagonia gaining mass rather than staying the same or slowly shrinking. This time we hike through virgin Magellanic forest to a glacial waterfall, a towering wall of ferns and moss, and spectacular viewpoints looking down on the glacier and fjord. The walk is demanding — very steep, negligible trail, rough footing — and not for everyone. For those who choose to stay onboard, our captain will point the bow towards the beautiful sky blue Garibaldi Glacier so everyone can enjoy the panoramic view from the upper decks.

Early in the morning, we will sail through the Cockburn Channel and enter Agostini Sound.  From there it is possible to see the glaciers that descend from the middle of the Darwin Mountain Range — some of them reaching the water. This morning, we will disembark and go for an easy walk around a lagoon, which was formed by the melting of the Águila Glacier.  We will reach a spot right in front of that glacier with stunning views.  In the afternoon, we will approach the Condor Glacier via Zodiac — and hopefully see some of the abundant Andean Condors in the area.

Day 5- Magdalena Island - Punta Arenas

After an overnight cruise through Magdalena Channel and back into the Strait of Magellan, we anchor off Magdalena Island, which lies about halfway between Tierra del Fuego and the Chilean mainland. Crowned by a distinctive lighthouse, the island used to be an essential source of supplies for navigators and explorers and is inhabited by an immense colony of Magellanic penguins. At the break of dawn, weather permitting, we go ashore and hike a path that leads through thousands of penguins to a small museum lodged inside the vintage 1902 lighthouse. Many other bird species are also found on the island. In September and April — when the penguins dwell elsewhere — this excursion is replaced by a ride aboard Zodiacs to Marta Island to observe South American sea lions.

After a short cruise south along the strait, disembarkation at Punta Arenas is scheduled for around 11:30 AM.

Day 1- Embarkation in Punta Arenas, Chile

Day 2 -Ainsworth Bay – Tuckers Islets

Day 3-Pia Glacier – Glacier Alley

Day 4 -Cape Horn – Wulaia Bay

Day 5 – Disembarkation in Ushuaia, Argentina

cape horn tours

After a welcoming toast and introduction of captain and crew, the ship departs for one of the remotest corners of planet Earth. During the night we cross the Strait of Magellan and enter the labyrinth of channels that define the southern extreme of Patagonian. The twinkling lights of Punta Arenas gradually fade into the distance as we enter the Whiteside Canal between Darwin Island and Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego.

Day 2 -Ainsworth Bay - Tuckers Islets

By dawn the ship is sailing up Admiralty Sound (Seno Almirantazgo), a spectacular offshoot of the Strait of Magellan that stretches nearly halfway across Tierra del Fuego. The snowcapped peaks of Karukinka Natural Park stretch along the north side of the sound, while the south shore is defined by the deep fjords and broad bays of Alberto de Agostini National Park. We go ashore at Ainsworth Bay, which harbors copious bird life and a colony of southern elephant seals which can sometimes be spotted from the Zodiacs. Two guided excursions are available: one is along the edge of a stream, peat bog and beaver habitat to a waterfall-and-moss-covered rock face tucked deep inside a pristine sub-polar forest; the other is a more strenuous hike along the crest of a glacial moraine. Both afford views of Marinelli Glacier and the Darwin Mountains.

Leaving our Ainsworth Bay tour behind, we sail west along the sound to the Tucker Islets. After lunch, we board the Zodiacs again for a close-up view of the Magellan penguins that inhabit the tiny islands. More than 4,000 penguins use Tucker as a place to nest, give birth and nurture their chicks. Many other bird species also frequent the area including king cormorants, oystercatchers, Chilean skuas, kelp geese, dolphin gulls, eagles and even the occasional Andean condor. In September and April — when the penguins live elsewhere — this excursion is replaced by a short walk to a glacier at nearby stunning Brookes Bay.

Day 3-Pia Glacier - Glacier Alley

Overnight we sail around the western end of Tierra del Fuego via the very narrow Gabrial Channel, Magdalena Channel and Cockburn Channel. After rounding the remote Brecknock Peninsula, the Australis cruise tacks eastward and enters the Beagle Channel again. By morning we are entering Pia Fjord and boarding the Zodiacs for a Pia Glacier tour. After disembarking we take a short hike to gain a panoramic view of the spectacular glacier, which extends from the mountaintops down to the sea or a longer much more difficult walk up a lateral moraine of the old Pia Glacier.

Back onboard the ship, we continue east along the Beagle Channel through an area called Glacier Alley. Living up to its name, the passage features a number of impressive tidewater glaciers flowing down from the Darwin Mountains and Darwin Ice Sheet on the north shore. Most of them named after European countries — Holland, Italy, Germany, Spain and France.

Day 4 -Cape Horn - Wulaia Bay

During the morning we cruise across Nassau Bay into the remote archipelago that includes Cape Horn National Park. The Chilean navy maintains a permanent lighthouse on the island, staffed by a lightkeeper and his family, as well as the tiny Stella Maris Chapel and modern Cape Horn Monument.

In the afternoon we navigate the narrow Murray Channel between Navarino and Hoste islands and drop anchor at historic Wulaia Bay, one of the few places in the archipelago where the human history is just as compelling as the natural environment. Originally the site of one of the region’s largest Yámana aboriginal settlements, the bay was described by Charles Darwin and sketched by Captain FitzRoy in the 1830s during their voyages on the HMS Beagle. This area is also renowned for its mesmerizing beauty and dramatic geography. After a visit to the Australis-sponsored museum in the old radio station — which is especially strong on the Yámana people and European missionaries in the area — passengers have a choice of three hikes (of increasing degrees of difficulty) that ascend the heavily wooden mountain behind the bay. On all of these you will be strolling through an enchanted Magellan forest of lengas, coigües, canelos, ferns, and other endemic fauna to reach a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the bay. Before leaving Wulaia Bay, drop something into the wooden mail barrel inside the museum – letters or postcards meant to be hand delivered by future travelers – an ancient mariner tradition revived by Australis

Day 5 - Disembarkation in Ushuaia, Argentina

The following morning we sail into Argentine waters and dock in Ushuaia, the world’s southernmost city.  Arrival at 08:30 a.m. and 9:30 am according to date of departure.

Furthermore, the Company may cancel, without any liability whatsoever, one or more voyages if circumstances arising from the effects of the COVID 19 pandemic on the maritime transportation of passengers and/or on the tourist cruise market prevent, discourage or affect in any way the feasibility of such voyages. This situation shall be deemed to include the circumstance that the trip in question does not have a sufficient number of passengers to justify its execution, either from the economic point of view or from the point of view of the necessary human or material resources, as well as any other factor that prevents, hinders or makes it more burdensome to have such resources available. The qualification of this circumstance shall correspond to the exclusive judgment of the Company, which shall neither express nor prove its origin, all of which is expressly accepted when the reservation is formulated.

Each passenger, directly or through the travel agency that made the reservation, must send via email and at least 45 days in advance their vaccination certificate.

The Shipowner will communicate to the passenger, directly or through the respective travel agency, any doubts or observations regarding their official certification. The passenger must correct the corresponding doubts or objections. Notwithstanding the preceding, each passenger must show the corresponding official certificate without pending observations before sailing. Without a proper vaccination certificate, the passenger will not be able to board the ship.

Additionally, and before boarding, the Shipowner may require the passenger to perform a Covid-19 antigen test provided by the company for this purpose, which, if negative, will allow them to board the ship. In no case will this antigen test replace the vaccination certificate.

Likewise, the passenger’s responsibility is to have all the necessary documentation required by the authorities to enter the Magallanes Region and the Chilean Antarctic, which must be shown to the Shipowner if needed.

The trips described in the itineraries are usually possible. Notwithstanding the foregoing, the Company reserves the right to alter, change or disregard part of this itinerary without prior notice, whether motivated by the welfare and safety of passengers, for the proper preservation of the environment or due to any extraordinary circumstance, fortuitous event or force majeure. Furthermore the departure or arrival of vessels may be subject to possible changes.

Mountain peak on Carpe Horn Island surrounded by a dark blue ocean

Scenic Cruising Cape Horn

It may be the most notorious ocean passage in the world, and for centuries it evoked dread in the hearts of sailors. But those who survived a trip around Cape Horn, where the Atlantic and Pacific slosh violently into each other, had bragging rights for life. Along this passage, the Tierra del Fuego, or "land of fire," where Chile and Argentina converge at the bottom of the world, got its name from early sailors who saw the fires of the people who lived here burning on shore. For some 8,000 years, until as recently as the end of the 19th century, this was the home of the Yaghan and other indigenous groups.

Magellan and Drake left their mark and names here, as did Darwin, who sailed through here on the HMS Beagle . The great clipper ships of '49er lore later fought their way through fierce waves carrying gold between California and the East Coast in that era before the Panama Canal. Just as Richard Henry Dana, Jr., described in his masterful  Two Years Before the Mast , published in 1840, a journey today around the Cape at the very bottom of the Tierra is shaped by capricious weather, as powerful winds and shallow waters can produce waves that reach as high as 30 meters (100 feet).

The additional optional tours were also good, we did the Metro tour which I highly recommend, we also paid for the Kremlin tour. The hop on hop off has three different lines all included. Only fault was the bus was sometimes full and you had to wait for the next one which was about 15 minutes (in the cold). Read more Written January 6, 2020

They suggested we do the 1 hour boat trip and said they would drop us to the dock. 1) they dropped us in the wrong place 2) they were lost because of the marathon Then the boat, after we finally found it: 1) stinking fumes, actually gagging 2) no commentary, in fact, no interaction unless you begged 3) offered us 2 for 1 icecreams as they had melted and refrozen as the fridge gets turned off at night Honestly, we enjoyed the afternoon in the boat but spent all of it laughing at just how awful it was!!! The worst thing in Moscow! Read more Written August 18, 2019
  • niruDurbs 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Not the best value for the price The ticket is quite expensive and covers three different routes in a 24 hour period. The red route is quite exciting and takes about an hour. The bus comes every 10 to 15 minutes. However the other two routes take about two hours each and buses come every 30 to 40 minute period. If the bus is full then you have to wait at the stop for the next bus. So personally I feel that not much can be seen this way. I definitely was not impressed. However it must be noted that one can learn a lot about the history of Moscow Read more Written July 3, 2019

The boat element was wonderful, we saw some amazing parts of Moscow along the river side. The bus element was very disappointing as it only started at 10am and was finished by 6:30pm. It was extremely warm when we were there and it would have been great to do the tour in the cool of the day. There was also no air conditioning in the down stairs part of the bus. • adolfo17 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles The worst hope-on hope-off service I've ever seen Diffiult to understand the route maps and stops. Staff wouldn't help either. Lengthy stops. No air conditioning. Read more Written August 4, 2018
  • Peter F 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Two Routes There is a short red route which depending on the traffic takes about an hour. The route is generally around the Red Square area. The ear phones were small and sometimes the commentary did not link up with the sites you were seeing. The green bus takes you on a longer route and ours took two and a half hours due to the heavy traffic. I would not recommend this trip unless it is raining or you want to fill in time. The sights we saw were nothing outstanding with plenty of time at certain stops for photos. Also the driver stop for a bite to eat at one stop. Read more Written July 30, 2018
  • Bernardo P 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Boat Trips Moscow, Russia Yesterday, I booked a boat trip with the GetYourGuide.com web page and was totally horrible, didn’t have audio guide as it shows on the picture-Nobody Talk-. The girl on the picture-light blue bag-ask for 100 Rubles for show her the QR Code while I had the Booking and PIN number cause she must see the vessel name-Didn’t say nothing and after she said board any vessel. I suggest take the trip and pay on site, avoid fake internet pages, there are many other services with a lot of entertainment, don’t take this ones. Read more Written July 14, 2018
  • Kathrynowl91 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Good way to see some sites We usually do these tours when we travel. They get you round and you see the sight . The traffic is quite heavy so it is a bit slow but there is not a lot they can do about it. We only did the red route. Just a note people don’t queue here when the bus comes it’s a bit of a free for all. Read more Written July 13, 2018
  • Daniyal91 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Was Ok.! Started our tour of moscow from here, We had got the 2 Day Pass with the boat ride. The route and the map was good but not well managed. The bus didn't stop at many points. Were were unaware a couple of times at what point we were and missed them. Headphones and maps were provided. Would recommend one should check out the route map before going and decide which places to stop in advance, this way one can manage and enjoy the tour more and us it more effectively.! The boat ride was Ok, a little crowded. No guide provided, just a boat ride with restaurant service Read more Written July 12, 2018
  • WilliamDyer 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Poor service on boat and too many waiting times on buses For the price, you should expect at minimum English speaking tour guides with decent experience, but at least in my case that did not happen both in buses and boats. And in the boat even tough we were 90% English speaking tourist at least, the tour guide spoke 95% of the time in Russia, and only 3 sentences in English, I really counted how many times she spoke in English. And at the end she asks us if we have any questions? Of course I told her I couldn’t ask her anything since I didn’t understand 95% of what she was saying. The boat tour is not worth it, just take the bus that would be my advice. Second minus is the waiting times, in the boat they made us wait an hour before it departed, and in many stops with the buses waiting times of 20-30 minutes. I actually think I lost that day around 2 hours doing nothing. Be careful. Read more Written July 10, 2018
