‘Carlos’ Review: Santana’s Soulful Legacy

In Rudy Valdez’s poignant but shortsighted documentary, the guitarist’s magic comes alive in performances and childhood recollections.

A man with long curly hair holds a guitar near the camera.

By Chris Azzopardi

Since his breakthrough at the Fillmore in San Francisco and then a star-making performance at Woodstock in 1969, Carlos Santana’s fusion of improvisational Latin rock and blues has been regarded as transcendent.

In the director Rudy Valdez’s poignant but shortsighted documentary, “Carlos,” that same magic comes alive through performance clips from various eras of the Mexican guitarist’s half-century-long career and commentary about his life offstage. Santana’s ethereal mood imbues the movie with a numinous feel — even a childhood anecdote that he shares about his father communicating to birds while playing the violin at sunset is delivered with an affecting cosmic touch.

Although Santana, 76, reveals some raw details of his life — his father’s infidelity, experiencing sexual abuse as a child — the portrait, rendered primarily through interviews, leaves a lot out. For fans wondering about the anti-trans comments that he made at a show in July and then apologized for, there’s nothing in the documentary that mentions his political stances. The film presents Santana without critique.

Other interviews can feel muted. His sisters, exhibiting hesitant body language, don’t seem like they want to say too much. His bandmate and second wife, Cindy Blackman Santana, is even quieter. Deeper insights from a rock critic or music historian would have enriched the film to fully convey not just what Santana’s legacy is but what it means . Still, this controlled documentary captivates as a soulful personal history, even if it doesn’t exactly transcend.

Carlos Rated R for coarse language, brief nudity and rock ’n’ roll drug talk. Running time: 1 hour 27 minutes. In theaters.

Watch the First Trailer for Carlos Santana’s Documentary

Carlos Santana ‘s definition of magic is simple: “Magic is when you command the elements to capture people’s hearts,” he says in the trailer for the forthcoming documentary CARLOS . The film, which is set for a general theatrical release on Sept. 29, shows that the legendary musician doesn’t just believe in magic — he creates it.

In the brief preview, Santana remembers the pivotal moment when he was invited to perform at the Fillmore in San Fransisco. “Bill Graham came to me, and he said, ‘You’re gonna open up for the Who, Steve Miller, and Howlin’ Wolf,” he recalled, remembering how mind-blown he was at the time.

“The electric documentary CARLOS utilizes new interviews with Santana and his family alongside extraordinary, never-before-seen archival footage — including home video recordings Santana himself made, concert footage, and behind-the-scenes moments,” a synopsis for the film reads. “Two-time Emmy-winning director Rudy Valdez creates an intimate, rich documentary about a man whose sound casts a magical spell on his fans around the world.”

The documentary will open in theaters on Sept. 23, 24, and 27. Those screenings will feature additional introductory content from Santana and Valdez.

Carlos: The Santana Journey review – profile of guitar hero very much in control

Santana comes across pretty well, if clearly in charge of his image, but Rudy Valdez’s film feels a bit like a Wikipedia entry with added pictures

F or those only passingly interested in the subject, this resolutely adequate portrait of guitarist Carlos Santana is the cinematic equivalent of a well-written and factchecked Wikipedia page but with loads more pictures and film clips. Hardcore fans may feel better served by the deep dive into Santana’s childhood and youth in Mexico, followed by his breakthrough into the San Francisco psychedelic music scene, and then on to that career-making performance at Woodstock in 1969. Forgive me if you have heard this one before, but Santana supposedly dropped acid given to him by Jerry Garcia from the Grateful Dead, expecting he would have hours to come down before his band, named after him, had to go on and play. Instead, they were called on stage soon after. The weird faces Santana can be seen making in the immortal documentary of the festival are apparently a result of him thinking that the neck of his guitar was a snake that he had to wrestle into musical submission. Those were the days.

After the hit albums and huge tours of the 1970s, the story gets a bit duller – as most of these stories do. The narrative takes in the inevitable dissolution of the first marriage, the low times and then the comeback when Santana shifted musical direction a bit. As a documentary subject, albeit one clearly very much in control of his image here and not about to let the film-makers show him in anything but a flattering light, he comes across pretty well: articulate, still vain enough to have himself filmed shirtless, but grounded by strong family ties. That said, two of his sisters are interviewed and you can tell by their postures and hesitancies that they are holding back massive resentments.

Indeed, it is not clear how interested director Rudy Valdez is in Santana, or whether he is just doing this gig as a means to an end. Valdez’s filmography is filled with works that sound a lot more hard-hitting and social justice-oriented than this behind-the-music fluff. Even so, Valdez gets the job done, laying down a constant soundtrack of Santana’s music in the background that (to be honest) sounds like variations on the same theme over and over again at slightly different speeds. No mention is made of the most controversial thing Santana has done recently, which was to say on stage that transgender people should stay “in the closet”, remarks for which he has since apologised .

‘Carlos’ Review: A Portrait of Carlos Santana Revels in His Musical Life Force

Rudy Valdez's enthralling documentary celebrates Santana's Latin-gone-psychedelic rock 'n' roll life, which had a different arc from that of other rock stars.

Santana, as we discover, had a very different arc than other rock stars. Born in Jalisco, Mexico, he grew up in one of the most impoverished sections of Tijuana, with a father who was a mariachi musician (he taught Carlos how to play the violin). What the film shows us is that Carlos approached life and music with a religious reverence he never lost. He worshipped his father, even though he was a philanderer, and his mother too (he swore to her that one day he’d buy her a house). The family moved to San Francisco, and we hear a tape recording of Carlos from 1966, when he was starting to play in bands, and his guitar soloing is already extraordinary — he’s like B.B. King on a Haight-Ashbury bender.

Audiences got addicted to them — to the sound and fury of Santana’s attack. But it was Woodstock that elevated him to the big leagues, and the story he tells in “Carlos” about that performance is one of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll anecdotes I’ve ever heard. Carlos arrived at Woodstock by helicopter, and the first thing he encountered there was Jerry Garcia (who he knew from the Fillmore), extending an open hand with some pills in it. Carlos wasn’t scheduled to go on for many hours, so he figured he’d take the pills and they would wear off.

The next thing he knew, the Woodstock announcer, with that deep voice, was introducing Santana. Carlos stepped onstage out of his mind on acid. We’ve all seen Santana in the “Woodstock” movie, playing “Soul Sacrifice” — the driving beat, the thrashing-drums-and pumping-organ intensity, topped by Carlos’ extended soloing, as articulate in its fury as Hendrix’s. He also makes some very ugly rock-overbite faces. The film shows those clips, and Carlos, looking back, explains to us what was happening: He thought the neck of his guitar had turned into a writhing snake, one he was literally wrestling so that he could subdue it enough to play. What the whole world saw was a guitarist on pure electric fire. What Carlos was doing was trying to keep a demon under control.

It was sheer karmic coincidence that Santana’s self-titled first album, recorded for Columbia Records (the band had been signed by Clive Davis), was scheduled to be released just one week after Woodstock. It spent more than two years on the Billboard 200 chart, and while its success was driven by the single “Evil Ways,” more than half the album was instrumental, and that was its essence. Rolling Stone panned it by calling it “a speed freak’s delight — fast, pounding, frantic music with no real content,” which in hindsight sounds like a compliment. The content of Santana’s music was its Latin hellfire vibe, its propulsive majesty.

Launched into the ’70s, Carlos Santana had as idiosyncratic — and committed — an odyssey as any musician of his time. Early on, driven by the success of “Santana” and “Abraxas,” he lived the rock-star dream. But Carlos turned out to be something of an ascetic, and that guided his career in several ways. The members of Santana, the band, kept shifting; Carlos was the only constant. And in the mid-’70s, he basically renounced the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle by becoming a white-suited disciple of the Indian spiritual leader Sri Chinmoy, who also counted Mahavishnu Orchestra founder John McLaughlin among his followers. The first rock concert I ever went to was the Santana/McLaughlin tour — a cascade of intertwined guitar rapture, and still the loudest concert I’ve ever heard.

“Carlos” provides a just intimate enough glimpse of who Santana was and is offstage. He devoted himself to raising his family; in that spirit, he tells us that music is what he does, not who he is. But we can see that it’s both. At home, Santana likes to make solo video recordings of himself, usually with no shirt on, improvising on the guitar with backing tracks. Watching these rec-room noodlings, you see that he’s someone who literally breathes music. That’s part of what made his extraordinary comeback, in 1999, with “Supernatural” feel so organic. The guitar soloing that lifted “Smooth,” his collaboration with Matchbox Twenty singer Rob Thomas, to the heavens wasn’t that different from the guitar soloing he did on acid at Woodstock in 1969. But 30 years later, he didn’t have to work so hard to tame the snake.

Is the Carlos Santana Documentary on Netflix? Where to Watch ‘Carlos’

Get ready to get to know the man underneath the hat, because a Carlos Santana documentary is coming to theaters this week.

Carlos is a new documentary from director Rudy Valdez that tells the life story of guitarist Carlos Santana, whose long career spans the ’60s to the present day. Valdez walks viewers through Santana’s childhood in Mexico, to his big break at Woodstock in 1969, to his resurgence of popularity in the ’90s.

In a statement for the documentary press notes, Santana said, “I wanted to this documentary to share my mother’s and father’s frequencies and principles of how they raised and influenced my professional and personal life—a story of triumph, confidence, and vitality and is the opposite of the victim mentality. This documentary represents to me a collective consciousness that there are no borders or flags that can contain one’s passion —a story of heart.”

Featuring interviews with Santana then and now, along with never-before-seen footage from the musician’s own personal archive, this documentary is certainly a must-watch for Santana fans. Here’s what to know about how to watch Carlos: The Santana Journey , including whether the Santana documentary is on Netflix.

Is the Carlos Santana documentary on Netflix?

The Carlos Santana documentary is not on Netflix at this time, nor is available to stream anywhere online. The movie will open in select theaters for the “global premiere” on September 23, 24, and 27, and will then open more widely, in theaters only, on September 29.

However, we can expect to see Carlos on Netflix eventually. Read on to learn more.

Where to watch Carlos Santana documentary:

Right now, the only place to watch the Carlos movie is in a movie theater. The movie will be in select, big-city theaters this week for the “global premiere” on September 23, 24, and 27. You can find tickets at carlosglobalpremiere.com .

Carlos will officially open in theaters for a wider release on Friday, September 29.

When will the Carlos Santana movie be streaming?

Carlos does not yet have a digital release date, so it’s hard to say when the movie will be streaming online. However, it’s likely that the Carlos Santana documentary will be on Netflix eventually, because it is a Sony Pictures Classics movie.  Netflix has a  deal  with Sony Pictures that gives the streamer the rights to the Sony movies in the “Pay 1” window, meaning the first streaming window after the film’s home media release. That said, it seems to take a little longer for movies from Sony Pictures Classic, a branch of Sony Pictures, to come to the streamer.

Another Sony Pictures Classic movie, Living , began streaming on Netflix on June 5, six months after the movie opened in theaters. If Carlos follows a similar release pattern, you might see the Carlos Santana movie on Netflix around March or April 2024.

That’s a long time to wait, so if you’re a die-hard fan-tana, you may want to see the movie in theaters when it opens on September 29.

Santana warming back up at the plate after a rough start with Twins

A NAHEIM, CALIF. – After Carlos Santana homered for the second consecutive game Friday, and added an RBI single, Carlos Correa walked up to Santana during a postgame interview with a simple message for anyone who wants to listen.

"He's back," Correa declared.

Santana had seven hits in his first 57 at-bats this season with 14 strikeouts and five walks. In his last six games, through Friday, he's totaled six hits in 22 at-bats with two homers, a double, four strikeouts and three walks.

The difference, Santana says, is he feels more comfortable in the batter's box.

"I'm looking for my pitch," he said. "I know myself. I know what kind of player I can be this season, so I don't try to do too much. I'm looking [to hit] up the middle all the time, so now I feel more comfortable."

Santana, the 38-year-old switch hitter, fell into a 0-2 count against Angels lefty Patrick Sandoval on Friday. He didn't chase a couple pitches below the strike zone before hammering a slider over the center-field wall. He scored his 1,000th career run on the homer, the ninth active player to reach that milestone.

In the sixth inning against Sandoval, Santana singled up the middle on a curveball to end a seven-pitch at-bat.

"I mean, this is not the first time in my career I started slow," said Santana, who entered Saturday with a .165 batting average and a .250 on-base percentage. "But into the year, I finish strong. I never stop. I'm working hard every day. I know the team might need me, and I need to put in the work to help my team."

The Twins signed Santana to a one-year, $5.25 million contract after they traded Jorge Polanco to the Seattle Mariners. They thought his defense at first base would be beneficial, and they're hoping he can stave off Father Time for another season.

"In my opinion, old age is a number," he said. "I feel good. I don't hurt. My body feels great. I'm feeling strong at the end of the first month."

Caleb Thielbar earned the second save of his career, and his first since June 23, 2022, when he recorded the final out in the Twins' 5-3 victory over the Angels on Friday.

Twins manager Rocco Baldelli turned to the lefthanded Thielbar after Matt Bowman walked two batters in the ninth inning with a three-run lead. Thielbar surrendered an RBI single to Angels shortstop Zach Neto, a righthanded batter, before inducing a game-ending groundout against Mike Trout, another righty batter.

"He has the stuff to attack righties, so you don't go out there thinking you're just throwing a typical lefty at a righthanded lineup," Baldelli said. "You feel much better about it than that. He can compete and hold his own against anyone and get outs against anyone. I felt perfectly fine bringing him into the game knowing what he can do."

• Louie Varland allowed four hits and one run in five innings in his first Class AAA appearance since he was demoted from the Twins' starting rotation. He struck out five and issued one walk as the Saints were swept in a doubleheader against Rochester on Saturday, losing 3-2 in Game 1 and 8-7 in Game 2.

• Jhoan Duran struck out two batters in a clean inning for the Saints in the first game of the doubleheader. Hitters whiffed on six of their eight swings against the Twins closer, and Duran's fastball topped out at 102.9 mph. Baldelli said they haven't determined if he will make another rehab appearance or join the Twins in Chicago for their next road series.

Minnesota Twins Veteran Carlos Santana Scores 1,000th Career Run on Solo Home Run

Carlos Santana opened up the Minnesota Twins' win over the Los Angeles Angels with a solo home run to center, scoring the 1,000th run of his career in the process.

In this story:

Carlos Santana reached another massive career milestone on Friday.

The Minnesota Twins veteran stepped up to the plate with one down in the top of the second against the Los Angeles Angels . After going down 0-2 in the count, Santana took two balls low to even things up.

Patrick Sandoval tried to attack Santana with a 90 mile-per-hour slider low in the zone, and Santana made him pay.

Santana got a hold of the pitch, crushing it 107 miles per hour with a 23 degree launch angle. He sent the ball 425 feet to straightaway center, clearing the fence and putting the Twins up 1-0 in the process.

When he finished rounding the bases, Santana crossed home plate for the 1,000th time in his storied MLB career.

Santana is now the 352nd player in MLB history to score 1,000 runs. He is one of nine active players currently in the club.

The 38-year-old catcher-turn-first baseman reached 300 home runs and 1,000 RBI during the 2023 season. He achieved both feats as a member of the Milwaukee Brewers last September.

Santana spent 10 of his first 11 MLB seasons with the Cleveland Indians , and has since bounced around between the Philadelphia Phillies , Kansas City Royals , Seattle Mariners , Pittsburgh Pirates , Brewers and Twins. For his career, Santana is a .241 hitter with a .781 OPS, 35.0 WAR, one All-Star appearance and one Silver Slugger Award.

Through 22 games in 2024, Santana is batting .165 with two home runs, six RBI, a .516 OPS and a -0.5 WAR.

Santana will get a chance to continue adding to his gaudy career totals when the Twins resume their series with the Angels on Saturday. Game two is set to get started at 9:38 p.m. ET.

Santana homers again, drives in 4, as Twins rout Angels 16-5

Carlos Santana hit a home run in his third consecutive game and drove in four runs as the Minnesota Twins scored 10 times over the first four innings and extended their winning streak to six with a 16-5 victory over the Los Angeles Angels

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Carlos Santana hit a home run in his third consecutive game and drove in four as the Minnesota Twins scored 10 times over the first four innings to extend their winning streak to six with a 16-5 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday night.

Max Kepler and Ryan Jeffers also hit home runs and Edouard Julien had three hits and three RBIs as the Twins improved to 7-1 following a five-game losing streak that included a three-game sweep by the Baltimore Orioles.

Twins starter Chris Paddack (2-1) wobbled a bit by giving up four runs on eight hits and a walk but went five innings.

The Twins have at least 10 hits in every game of the winning streak and had six different players drive in runs over the first three innings on Saturday.

“It just meant that we did a good job being relentless in the way we approached the at-bats,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “To have that kind of production (three runs) in four different innings, honestly, what more can you ask for? There were no breaks. We didn't make it easy on them.”

Joe Adell hit a home run and drove in three runs for the Angels, who lost for the eighth time in their past nine games. Los Angeles starter Jose Soriano (0-4) gave up four runs with three walks over a season-low 1 2/3 innings. He has walked 11 batters over his last three starts.

Outfielder Aaron Hicks pitched the ninth inning for the Angels, giving up Jeffers' two-run homer.

“You just go home and get yourself some rest but the first thing you do is look yourself in the mirror,” Angels manager Ron Washington said. “If you feel like you did everything you can do, then you go home and get some rest. It happens. I’m just hoping for the time we can do that.”

The Twins loaded the bases three batters into the game but scored just once on Kepler's walk. Alex Kirilloff, Julien and Trevor Larnach each drove in runs in the second inning for a 4-0 lead.

Santana had an RBI double in a three-run third inning and hit a three-run homer in the fourth for a 10-4 lead.

“I've been preparing and I feel good, my body feels good,” said the 38-year-old Santana, who is in his 15th season. “I have to continue to help when the team needs me and I have to help with defense or hitting. We're in a great spot. We won six games straight but tomorrow is a new day.”

Adell’s third home run of the season, a two-run shot, came in the second inning. He added an RBI single in the third.

Kepler hit a home run in the sixth inning and Julien had a two-run double off the top of the wall in left-center during a three-run seventh.

A two-run double for the Twins' Kyle Farmer in the third inning snapped an 0-for-17 run. Farmer reached base four times on two hits and two walks.

“He's another guy that has been working hard and it's coming to him,” Baldelli said. “The times this year when he has had good at-bats and did exactly what he wanted to do, it hasn't worked out. But today it sure did."

The Twins won a road series over the Angels for the first time since a three-game sweep in 2019.

TRAINERS ROOM

Twins: RHP Jhoan Duran (oblique) had two strikeouts over two innings during a rehab appearance for Triple-A St. Paul, throwing five of his 15 pitches at 100 mph or more.

Angels: 3B Miguel Sanó was out of the lineup against his former team with left knee soreness.

Twins: RHP Pablo Lopez (1-2, 4.39 ERA) will look to improve on a 5.49 ERA over his last four starts on Sunday.

Angels: LHP Reid Detmers (3-1, 2.12 ERA) is out to rebound from his worst start of the season when he gave up four runs Monday to the Orioles.
