Junior: The campus is beautiful and the curriculum is challenging. However, the undergraduate professors do not care very much for undergraduate students, and you have to really advocate for yourself frequently. The deans are very helpful in getting professors in motion, so I recommend getting to know your deans and academic advisors. If your schedule allows you to go to office hours, do it! ... Other: New York University (NYU) is more than just an educational institution; it's an immersive journey through academic excellence, cultural diversity, and urban vibrancy. As a recent graduate, I can confidently affirm that NYU offers an unparalleled experience that transcends the traditional boundaries of higher education. One of the most striking aspects of NYU is its location. Situated in the heart of Manhattan, the campus seamlessly blends into the bustling rhythm of New York City. Rutgers University–New Brunswick

Piscataway, NJ •

  • • Rating 3.65 out of 5   6,107 reviews

Alum: During my years at Rutgers, I seized numerous chances at leadership and teaching thanks to the university's commitment to equal access. I spent time as Resident Life and volunteered at a local hospital, gaining experience beyond the classroom. The university's size may seem daunting, but its bus system makes navigating campus a breeze. Each campus has its own unique atmosphere, from the bustling city-esque College Avenue to the serene Douglass campus, complete with botanical gardens and farms. As someone from New York City, the "Knight Mover" service was one of my favorites; this service, available from 3am to 6am, ensured safe transportation for students–with no questions asked. My biggest regret was that not many students took advantage of this opportunity, whether it was because they simply didn’t know about it or because they didn’t like the small white pickup van. This can definitely be optimized: more vans, more awareness, and maybe students can volunteer to paint the vans! ... Read 6,107 reviews

Senior: Talking about my personal experience within my Science major, I loved to see my professors actually enjoying the subject they taught with some exceptions of course. And those who enjoyed their subject also enjoyed teaching, and that made them good at it. Instead of just having someone who is reading off some PowerPoint, they would actually explain what those words mean. Seeing how exciting the subject was for them, would also make me eager to learn. Those teachers made my learning experience much easier for the simple fact of loving what they do and loving to share that knowledge. In my latest semesters they set up a committee (?) That helps students find jobs and internship opportunities while having classes. A coach wpuld meet up with you talk about your career expectations and help you building resume and cover letters and also gathering info about internships and opportunities that are related to your major. Stony Brook, NY •

Freshman: Stony Brook has always been on my radar for potential colleges, but ever since becoming a student there, I would say it is my dream college. The students there aren't judgmental and mind their own business, but are active and willing to help; the professors there are often renowned for research and publications, but are mostly friendly and good at teaching; the campus is lively with plenty of people, but nature is prevalent - deer can be spotted once in a while! Transportation is convenient and accessible, which is great when the weather isn't good for walking outside. The only thing I want updated is the technology used for sharing and assigning class content, but that will come with time! Stony Brook University is always moving forward. ... Read 2,886 reviews

Alum: My overall experience at Rutgers University - Newark has been enriching and transformative. The vibrant and diverse campus environment fosters a sense of inclusivity and cultural exchange, providing a unique backdrop for academic and personal growth. The dedicated faculty members have been instrumental in my learning journey, offering insightful guidance and support. I appreciate the emphasis on experiential learning, which has allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings. However, like any institution, there's always room for improvement. I would like to see increased resources allocated to certain facilities and a more streamlined communication system to enhance the overall student experience. Junior: Attending FIT in NYC fulfills a long-held dream, offering an interesting and educational experience in the heart of the city. The unique student life, defined by the city itself, suits my preferences, though a more vibrant campus atmosphere and increased club involvement would be appreciated. These extracurriculars exposed me to diverse perspectives and taught me leadership skills that have proven invaluable in my career. Graduate Student: I like how supportive the professors were during my academic year. They tailored feedback to each specific student rather than the general classroom. Courses were very engaging and hands on where professors will bring real life situations into class discussions and assignments to best prepare us for "real" world. I also favored the extra curricular activities that were offered at Seton Hall. These opportunities to strengthen my communication skillsets allowed me to land internships at top media companies like Warner Music, NBC, and more. Due to the distinguished curriculum and unique student activities I was able to be an asset in my professional endeavors during and after graduating from Seton Hall. There are many opportunities to create your own path as a student to reach your goals. Sophomore: How I would describe Brooklyn College is like a one-and-done go. I picked only two days to go to campus because I recently moved away from Brooklyn and it's a 2-hour commute from where I live now. My day there is attending my 4 classes and with the breaks in between them, I like to study in the library or finish up work that needs to be done during the weekend, have some lunch with my classmates, etc. The student life here I would say is very inclusive, most people have their groups and just stay to themselves. What I would like to see change is the conditions of the buildings and the club & association environment. The conditions are manageable but could be better, most of the time the elevator doesn't work, very bad wifi, and not too many areas to have lunch, hang out, or study (besides the library). But what I love about Brooklyn college is the diversity and professors, you will see people from all countries here and your professors care about your grades and wellbeing. ... Read 1,285 reviews

They serve as role models with genuine constructiveness and wisdom. I have never seen such passion and drive from teachers and students - it's inspiring. It builds trust and excitement in the classroom. AMDA me feel not so trapped or scared to apply myself into the industry. They prepare, step by step, how to get someone into this line of business. They broadened my horizons in artistic possibilities: Classes like Screenwriting, Directing, Stage Combat, Film Making, Improv, Voice Work/Dialects, etc. It's inspiring being a part of a program that is so well rounded! It’s clear that they want you to succeed and are constantly rooting for you. They're friendly, inclusive, and located in the heart of the city. .

Freshman: Approaching the end of my freshman year, I'll say it was an experience. The first thing I noticed stepping foot on campus was just how quiet it was while walking between my classes. It was a shock compared to the bustling and loud hallways of my highschool. This alludes to the fact that the campus/student life isn't there when it comes to this college. As someone who likes socializing with others, it wasn't a very pleasant experience to say the last. This is more of a school that you go to just to get your degree and that's it. However, I can't say that there isnt places to go if you're looking to make some friends, because there are. It just may not be the best fit if you're looking to have a lot of fun during college. Besides that though, everything else has been fairly straight-foward. Overall, a good place to go if you're looking to get your business done (which is funny because it's a business school). ... Sophomore: Gorgeous campus, close knit student body, and the perfect distance from NYC! Tons of career and networking opportunities in Gabelli. I actually really enjoyed some of my core classes. A more low key party scene during the week but people are definitely out on friday/saturday. The dorms are average, some are nicer than others. Food on campus at the cafeteria is okay but they other locations that have sushi/bagels/acai bowls that are pretty good. A lot of people study abroad and Fordham has campuses in London and Spain which make it super easy which is great. Athletics aren’t huge, but people come to basketball. Rose Hill is definitely better for people who want a college experience on a college campus while also having access to the city. Biggest cons are probably $$$ and and weaker programs in areas like comp sci. ... Read 2,151 reviews

Sat / act prep online guides and tips, 15 top nyc colleges: how to decide if they're right for you.

College Info

manhattan-268282_640.jpg

New York is the most populous US city, and there are dozens of colleges in New York City. Should you go to college in NYC? If you want to be close to Gray's Papaya, Madison Square Garden, Broadway, and Wall Street, then going to school in New York City might be a good option.

In this article, I'll provide you with a list of top-ranked colleges in NYC. Furthermore, I'll explain the benefits and disadvantages of attending college in New York City and offer some advice on deciding if you should attend college in NYC .

The 15 Top-Ranked Schools in NYC

I've listed the top-ranked colleges in NYC in the order of acceptance rate, from lowest to highest. I also include both their Forbes rankings for the best overall colleges and the individual US News rankings for each college.

The US News divides colleges into 4 categories for its rankings: National Universities, National Liberal Arts Colleges, Regional Universities, and Regional Colleges. I listed each school's category after its US News ranking. The majority of the most prestigious schools are in the National University or National Liberal Arts College category. The Regional Colleges and Universities are still good, but they're typically not as well-known nationally.

Forbes and US News use many variables to determine their rankings. Their ranking methodologies are different, but they both use factors like graduation rates and freshman retention rates in their ranking lists. Forbes focuses more on student outcomes and incorporates alumni salary and student debt in its rankings while US News focuses more on the academic reputations of colleges .

There are private and public colleges of varying sizes on the list . The CUNY colleges are the public colleges in New York City. There are 11 four-year CUNY colleges .

Also, some of the colleges on the list have a particular focus . Barnard is a women's college . Cooper Union offers programs exclusively in architecture, fine arts, and engineering. Manhattan College is a Roman Catholic school and Yeshiva University is a Jewish college.

Other Popular NYC Colleges

New York City is known for its prestigious art schools like the Pratt Institute , the Fashion Institute of Technology , and The Juilliard School .

Additional well-known colleges in New York include St. John's University and the other CUNY colleges.

Benefits of Going to College in New York City

If you go to one of the many colleges in NYC, you'll be able to reap all of these benefits.

You'll Never Be Bored

Many colleges are in remote locations. If you ever get tired of on-campus activities, there aren't a ton of options for off-campus fun. If you go to college in New York City, you'll be in one of the most vibrant, exciting cities in the world .

You'll have easy access to museums, plays, sporting events, bars, clubs, and restaurants. You can check out The Metropolitan Museum of Art or the Guggenheim. If you're a basketball fan, you can attend a New York Knicks or Brooklyn Nets game. You may want to check out the newest show on Broadway. If you're like me and you enjoy some programming on The Food Network, you'll probably be excited to try the restaurants of Bobby Flay and Marcus Samuelsson.

Many NYC colleges offer deals to students so they can take advantage of New York's cultural offerings . Through its Arts Initiative , Columbia University offers students free admission to over 30 museums and discounted rates to theater and musical performances. Similarly, NYU Ticket Central offers discounted tickets to movies, Broadway and off-Broadway shows, sporting events, musical performances, and more.

Internship and Job Opportunities

One huge advantage of going to college in NYC is that there are so many industries and companies that are based there . There are numerous opportunities for college students to get internships or jobs that will give them meaningful experiences and lead to employment after graduation. If you're interested in theater, fashion, journalism, or finance, there are few cities with more opportunities in those fields than New York.

If you go to a large state school in a college town, you'll probably be surrounded by mostly traditional college-aged students who are from the state in which the college is located.

In NYC, you'll be able to interact with tons of people from all over the world . There are more foreign-born immigrants who live in NYC than there are people who live in Chicago . You'll be able to explore the many different ethnic neighborhoods in NYC where you can experience the cuisines and cultures of different nationalities. Especially in today's global economy, graduating college with a global perspective and knowledge of different cultures can benefit you in your professional life.

Transportation

At many colleges, students often complain that they feel like they're in a bubble or trapped in a very insulated environment, especially if they don't have a car and can't easily get off campus.

In New York, you'll have no issue exploring the city without a car . Between the subway, trains, cabs, and Uber, you shouldn't have any problem getting around the city or accessing other cities on the east coast. An added bonus is that the subway is pretty cheap and efficient.

Maybe I'm only emphasizing food because I really like to eat. When I was in college at Stanford, I remember being hungry late at night, and because I didn't have a car, I had to convince my roommate to take us to go get some grub. Our only real option off-campus at that time was Jack in the Box, a mediocre fast food establishment.

NYC is known for having some of the best restaurants in the world . There are cheap, tasty restaurants, food stands, and food trucks representing every type of food imaginable. If you live on campus and get sick of dorm food, you'll have access to so many different types of food at all hours. I'm a little jealous that I didn't have Shake Shack near me when I was in college.

Disadvantages of Going to College in New York City

While going to a New York City college can offer you many advantages and excitement, there are some potential downsides of going to school in NYC.

Distractions

Since you're primarily in college to learn, you may find it distracting to try to study and go to class in the "City That Never Sleeps." Because you'll have access to so many social opportunities and entertainment options in New York City, you'll have to maintain discipline to ensure that you're taking care of your academic responsibilities.

Less School Spirit and Less of an On-Campus Community

At colleges in college towns, everything revolves around the college. People sport their school colors with pride, enthusiastically cheer on their sports teams, and seem to have a strong bond with the school.

At colleges in New York City, the colleges are a very small part of the city . Students are likely to spend less time on campus because they're out exploring the city and all it has to offer. There can be less of a sense of community going to school in such an urban environment.

Also, none of the colleges in NYC have big-time football programs, and athletics aren't a huge part of the college experience . If you want to experience cheering on your school in a stadium with 100,000 screaming fans, you won't get that at a New York City college. However, St. John's does have a storied basketball program, and they play some of their home basketball games in the historic Madison Square Garden.

New York City Is Expensive

Even though you can find cheap food, discounted tickets to events, and the subway doesn't cost much, almost everything you do off campus will cost you some money. If you have limited funds, you may not really be able to take advantage of what the city has to offer .

Furthermore, if you don't have money and your friends are going to fancy NYC restaurants and getting tickets to Broadway shows, that can make you feel isolated and negatively impact your college experience.

Additionally, housing in NYC is extremely pricey . If you don't live on campus, it can be very difficult to find an affordable place to live. You may end up having to live far from campus or in an undesirable location. As of 2022, the average rent of a one bedroom apartment within 10 miles of NYC was $2,059 per month .

NYC Can Feel Overwhelming

New York City has so many people and so much activity that it can feel like a bit much if you prefer being in an environment with a laid-back vibe . Especially if you're from a rural or suburban environment, being around so many people who seem to always be in a hurry can make you feel unsettled or claustrophobic.

Even simple tasks like getting groceries can become chaotic adventures due to the throngs of people. My friends who live in New York and love it enjoy a fast-paced lifestyle or are at least unaffected by the hustle and bustle of the city.

How Do You Decide If an NYC College Is Right for You?

If you've never been to New York City, you should try to visit before committing to attend a college in NYC. New York is such a unique place, and it's hard to determine if you'd enjoy living there for 4-6 years without ever having visited. Check out some of the different neighborhoods and the colleges there that interest you to get a feel for the city and what it would be like to go to school there.

If you love New York when you visit, then going to college there may be a good option for you. Keep in mind, though, that even if you enjoy a visit to New York City, it doesn't necessarily mean that you would enjoy living there . If you visit, try to imagine spending years there going through day-to-day activities to help determine if going to college there would be a good decision for you.

Also, take note of the specific locations of different NYC colleges. Each neighborhood within New York City has its own personality and offers a slightly different environment.

Remember that you're deciding on a college, and the location should only be one factor in your college search . You should also consider other factors in a college like the cost, its academic reputation, and the majors offered .

Try to find the school that's the best fit for you. Use guidebooks , search websites , and college finders to help you in the college selection process.

I believe that going to college in New York City is a great option for students who enjoy urban environments and thrive on the activity in a big city setting. Consider the benefits and disadvantages of attending college in New York City. Do the pros outweigh the cons for you? If so, then you may want to attend college in The Big Apple.

How to Plan College Visits in the Northeast

Staff Writer

** This article was originally published in January 2020 and has since been updated and re-published.

The best way to discover if a college is right for you is to go on a college visit. Touring campuses and meeting students provide invaluable insights into schools that you cannot gather from a website. There are thousands of colleges in the United States, but only so many free days in the year. So organizing a weekend of college visits is a great way to see multiple colleges in limited time.

You will find no shortage of schools in the American northeast. From the Mid-Atlantic to Maine, colleges range from urban to rural and everything in between. How should you choose which schools to visit first? For example, choosing a city might be your best way to start. If you choose Boston, New York, Philadelphia, or Washington DC, you could schedule college visits for many schools in one weekend. Let’s use New York City as an example.

What types of schools?

Where will you be scheduling these college visits? Understanding what you are looking for in a school will be your first step. If you are only interested in public universities or small colleges, then you can scratch NYU off of your list. However, if “urban” is a high priority, then you might want to reconsider NYU. Balancing your wants and needs in a college is key. An excellent tool is the College Board’s college search feature called Big Future .

With Big Future, you can sort colleges by location, testing ranges, diversity, etc. Narrowing down colleges in one city better allows you to select your college visits. For example, if you know you are a student with certain scores, it might be smart to look at colleges with similar testing. Adding some “reaches” and “safeties” are okay as well. Creating a list of colleges is really up to you.

Deciphering between wants and needs will allow you to narrow down your college list. If you need to major in neural science, there may only be select universities in one area with that major. Greek life may be a desire for you, but not a necessity . You may want small classes, but could be open to a bigger university with slightly larger classes and more academic opportunities.

Scheduling is key.

Once you find the right schools, it is time to make your itinerary. College visits are offered at different times by different schools. Therefore, it is necessary to look at each school’s college visit schedule. By looking at NYU’s visit calendar , you can find weekday and weekend information sessions and tours. Weekends can be a great way to see multiple schools if you are from out of town. In New York, you could probably see two, maybe even three schools in one day. You should always RSVP early so that you solidify your spot in the session/tour.

Some colleges have multiple information sessions and tours throughout the day. In New York City, plan your travel between campuses accordingly, and do underestimate the subway! MTA Trip Planner can help you plan your commute to other colleges uptown, further downtown, or in other boroughs. If you are thinking of doing Friday and Saturday tours, consider the driving, hotel, and all that goes into making a weekend of college visits. (Most colleges do not offer visits on Sunday).

The reason for the (visit) season.

You make your itinerary, plan your travel, arrive on campuses, and complete your college visits. Now what? A lot happens while you are on campus, and a lot can be forgotten. When you visit multiple colleges in a short period of time, they can blend together. Take notes after the tour, while the college is still fresh in your mind. You will review these notes when talking about your final college list with your counselor.

The students you met and the admissions staff you spoke with provided great knowledge. Hold onto that. Use it in essays. Doing a college visit allows you to articulate how your experience on campus made you feel about the university. All of these benefits stem from your planning of college visits. Visiting campuses can reveal that you actually are not in love with a school you thought you were. Alternatively, it may confirm that passion is deep and real. If a student has the ability to visit a college campus, they absolutely should.

Suggested College Tour Itineraries

college tours map

Here are some suggestions for schools to visit, grouped by region, to get you rolling. Each list includes 5-6 schools that offer a range of sizes, settings and selectivity to help imagine the possibilities.  We also suggest others worth considering and why.

Cities currently covered include Boston, New York City, Syracuse, Washington DC, Chicago, Cleveland, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Click on the Continue Reading link below to see our suggestions, or try our College Tour Planner to build your own custom campus tour itinerary.

Suggested starting point

  • Boston College
  • Northeastern
  • Boston University

These popular Boston area schools represent a good mix of size, setting and admissions selectivity.  All are easily accessed via public transportation, and given their relative proximity you can squeeze in two campus visits a day if necessary.

For a taste of smaller schools in more rural locations, consider driving to western Massachusetts to visit Amherst , Williams , Hampshire College , Smith or UMass Amherst .  If you're interested in engineering, check out Olin , UMass Lowell and WPI , and if you're interested in entrepreneurship visit Babson .

Boston campus visits itinerary

  • Sarah Lawrence

Though we've contained the list to schools in NYC, it's easy to venture out into upstate NY, Connecticut, New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania if you're game.  If you're interested in visiting Ivy League schools, both Yale and Princeton are within relatively easy reach by car, bus or train. Cornell is four hours away, but if you head up that way you can also visit Colgate and Hamilton to give you a taste of small, medium and large schools in rural settings.

New York campus visits itinerary

  • Syracuse University
  • Ithaca College
  • Hobart and William Smith

The schools on this list offer a great mix of size, setting and selectivity. If environmental science and forestry are your thing, check out SUNY ESF , and if you have time to venture to Rochester, check out the University of Rochester and Rochester Institute of Technology .

Syracuse campus visits itinerary

Washington DC

  • American University
  • George Washington
  • Johns Hopkins
  • University of Richmond
  • University of Virginia

The schools on this list are medium to large schools in suburban and urban settings. Time permitting, consider also checking out William & Mary , Virginia Tech and Washington and Lee .

Washington DC campus visits itinerary

  • University of Chicago
  • Northwestern
  • University of Illinois - Urbana Champaign
  • University of Wisconsin

These schools are all classic medium-large universities. For a smaller school experience, check out the Colleges that Change Lives in the area, such as Knox , Beloit , Wheaton , Wabash , Kalamazoo and Cornell College .

Chicago campus visits itinerary

  • Case Western
  • Carnegie Mellon
  • University of Michigan

These schools provide a broad mix of sizes and settings. Kenyon and Oberlin exude a small school, small town feel, Ohio state and Michigan a classic Big Ten college town feel, and Case Western and Carnegie Mellon a more urban feel.

Cleveland campus visits itinerary

San Francisco

  • UC Berkeley
  • UC Santa Cruz
  • University of San Francisco
  • Santa Clara University

Most of the San Francisco Bay area schools tend to be larger in size, but offer great variety in terms of locale/setting. Three popular University of California campuses are within two hours: the more rural, bicycle-friendly Davis, the urban, progressive Berkeley, and the earthy-crunchy Santa Cruz.

San Francisco campus visits itinerary

Los Angeles

  • Claremont Colleges
  • UC San Diego

These popular Southern California schools offer a good mix of size, setting and selectivity. You'll need a car to see them all, but in certain situations it's still very possible to squeeze in two campus visits a day.  The Claremont Colleges— Pomona , Claremont McKenna , Pitzer , Harvey Mudd and Scripps —are particularly interesting to visit because of their setup as a consortium with distinct campuses but shared classes.

If you're interested in STEM fields, be sure to check out Caltech and Harvey Mudd. If film or animation are your thing, check out Chapman University , Cal Arts and Loyola Marymount in addition to USC and UCLA.

Los Angeles campus visits itinerary

That Giant College ‘Sticker’ Price Isn’t What Most Students Pay

The share of those paying the full advertised cost has declined over the last couple of decades, a new report found. Yet many don’t understand how much they’ll really pay.

An illustration of a large price tag hanging from a graduate’s mortarboard as the graduate gives it an anxious look.

By Ann Carrns

Families with college-bound students may well have shuddered when they heard that the official, full cost of a year at some four-year private schools will soon hit six figures .

But outrage over mushrooming college “sticker” prices clouds a reality that some families may not fully understand: Few students pay the full price. That’s because colleges give financial aid to income-eligible students and merit aid — in the form of scholarships or tuition discounts — to more affluent families that may be able to pay the full price but may balk at doing so.

On average, private nonprofit colleges cut tuition by more than half for first-time undergraduates, according to a recent report from the National Association of College and University Business Officers.

That means college sticker prices — the full “cost of attendance” that the federal government requires colleges to publish — are an increasingly unreliable indicator of what a family will pay, according to a report titled, in part, “Ignore the Sticker Price,” and published Friday by the Brookings Institution, a Washington think tank. That goes for both low- and middle-income families, as well as for higher-income families that don’t qualify for need-based aid.

“Our current system of setting and communicating college prices simply does not work,” wrote the author of the report, Phillip Levine, an economics professor at Wellesley College and a nonresident senior fellow at Brookings. He analyzed federal data to track changes in college pricing for students at different income levels.

“We cannot expect students to make sound decisions regarding educational investments if they do not understand how much college will actually cost them,” he added.

Sticker prices are easier to track than net prices — what students end up paying after deducting grants and other financial aid that doesn’t have to be repaid — but misleading because the share of students paying them has declined over time, the report said. In the 2019-20 school year, about 16 percent of students at private, nonprofit four-year colleges paid the full sticker price, down from 29 percent in the 1995-96 school year. (At in-state public colleges, about a quarter paid the sticker price in 2019-20, down from about half in 1995-96.)

Why would colleges promote themselves as more expensive than they really are? Colleges increasingly compete for students, and they may use the sticker price as a marketing tool to “signal” that the school is high quality, Dr. Levine said. They then award merit aid to encourage admitted students to enroll.

Average sticker prices at both private and public colleges rose roughly 70 percent from the 1995-96 to 2019-20 school years. Over the same period, typical net prices for lower-income students (with family incomes below $50,000) rose 44 percent at public schools and 24 percent at private schools — substantial increases but far below the rise in sticker prices.

For more than a decade, the report found, the typical net price at private colleges has increased just for higher-income students. But that still doesn’t mean college is affordable for low- or moderate-income families. Students from families with incomes of less than $50,000 are still being asked to pay almost $25,000 to attend a typical private institution, the report found.

“You do not need a Ph.D. to recognize that is not affordable,” Dr. Levine said in an interview.

The net price at public colleges has also become more of a stretch for lower-income families. At public colleges, the typical net price that low-income students pay, adjusted for inflation, rose to $18,000 in 2019-20, from $12,500 in 1995-96.

The gap between public price tags and actual cost deters less affluent students, who don’t even apply once they see an eye-popping list price.

“Sticker shock is a really big issue,” particularly for lower-income, Black and Hispanic students, said James Dean Ward, principal for policy and economic research at Ithaka S+R, a nonprofit research and advisory group focused in part on higher education.

Some colleges are “resetting” tuition to more accurately reflect what students will pay, hoping to attract more applicants. Bridgewater College, a small liberal arts school in rural Virginia, announced last year that it was lowering its published tuition more than 60 percent, to $15,000 from $40,300, starting next fall. (Housing, meals, books, supplies, travel and personal expenses, which add substantially to the cost, are extra.)

“I think it’s time for higher education to be more transparent,” said David Bushman, Bridgewater’s president, adding that the move was made in part to answer growing public skepticism about the value of a college degree. Virtually no students were paying the school’s full cost of attendance in recent years, according to Bridgewater’s statistical report . The school’s new pitch: “Private college experience. Public college price.”

Students from lower-income families, who may be eligible for federal need-based Pell grants, are especially put off by high sticker prices, Dr. Bushman said. “A large percentage won’t even look at a school if they think it’s too expensive,” he said, even though they may thrive in a small college setting.

Dr. Ward’s research, which he wrote with Daniel Corral of the University of Toronto, has found that after a tuition reset, college enrollment doesn’t grow much on average, but the proportion of Pell-eligible students increases.

Dr. Bushman said Bridgewater’s move appears to be working. Applications for the coming academic year were up 30 percent. “I’m confident it will bring us more students,” he said.

Here are some questions and answers about college prices and financial aid:

Why don’t colleges simply advertise their average net prices?

Students could benefit if all colleges cut their sticker prices rather than giving big discounts to reduce the net price, Dr. Levine’s report says in a footnote. But unless all colleges did so, the ones adopting such a policy might lose students, if potential applicants equated a lower price with lower quality. If colleges all cut prices at the same time, however, it might attract the attention of regulators as a potential violation of antitrust law.

How should students and families weigh a college’s sticker price?

Students shouldn’t rule out a college solely because of its sticker price, said Michele Shepard, senior director of college affordability at the nonprofit Institute for College Access and Success. She suggested using net price calculators , required on school websites, before you apply, to get a rough idea of how much need-based financial aid you might get. (Some are more accurate than others, and most don’t factor in merit aid.) After you are accepted and receive an official financial aid offer, focus on the price after grants and scholarships, which don’t have to be repaid. (This year, offers may be delayed because of snafus with the revamped FAFSA , the federal financial aid form.) Focus on the total price you’ll pay out of pocket — not the size of the financial aid package, which may include work or loans — to see if the school is affordable for you.

How can I tell if a college offers significant merit aid?

Some colleges may offer merit estimators on their websites. Otherwise, you can check the college’s “common data set,” which among other things includes information on financial aid awarded. (Search online for the college’s name and “common data set” if you don’t find it on a school’s website.) You can see the number of students who qualified for need-based aid, as well as those who didn’t but got financial help anyway — meaning merit aid.

108 arrested at pro-Palestinian protest at Columbia University

Over 100 people were arrested and issued summonses for trespass — including Rep. Ilhan Omar ’s daughter — after protesters set up an encampment at New York’s Columbia University in support of Gaza, police said.

The demonstrators occupied the space on the university's South Lawn for 30 hours, Mayor Eric Adams said after the arrests Thursday. Columbia asked the NYPD for help and said the students had been suspended and were refusing to leave, police said.

“Columbia University’s students have a proud history of protests and raising their voices,” Adams said, but he said that they don’t have the right to violate university policies.

“We will not be a city of lawlessness,” Adams said.

Omar’s daughter, Isra Hirsi, 21, who attends neighboring Barnard College in Manhattan, said on social media platform X that she was suspended for “standing in solidarity with Palestinians facing a genocide,” along with at least two other students.

A Pro-Israel protest and a Pro-Palestinian counter protest took place at Columbia University on April 18, 2024.

Hirsi, an organizer with a student group that advocates for Palestinians, said this was her first time being punished as a student activist in her three years at the New York City school.

"Those of us in Gaza Solidarity Encampment will not be intimidated,” she wrote.

More than 108 were arrested and given summonses for trespass, including Hirsi, police said. Two of those people were also charged with obstruction of governmental administration, according to authorities.

The students that were arrested were peaceful, did not resist “and saying what they wanted to say in a peaceful manner,” NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban said.

But around 500 other students left class and surrounded the quad “and were telling us that we’re the KKK,” among other insults, Caban said. Video from the scene obtained by NBC News shows crowds chanting “shame on you!” but does not capture the entire incident.

Columbia University’s president, Nemat “Minouche” Shafik, said in a memo to police earlier Thursday that more than 100 people were occupying the area.

"I have determined that the encampment and related disruptions pose a clear and present danger to the substantial functioning of the University," the memo said.

Shafik said the demonstrators were trespassing, refusing to disperse and damaging campus property, among other violations.

In a statement Thursday, Shafik said she authorized police to clear the encampment “out of an abundance of concern” for safety on campus.

By late Thursday afternoon, police had disassembled the original tent encampment, but protesters were beginning to build a new one on an adjacent lawn.

"Columbia is committed to allowing members of our community to engage in political expression — within established rules and with respect for the safety of all," the memo said.

Barnard said its staff identified its students who were at the encampment Wednesday and told them to leave or face sanctions. Those still there Thursday morning were placed on interim suspension, the university said . The camp was set up during the early morning hours of Wednesday, it said.

Barnard did not say how many students were suspended or confirm that Hirsi was among them. It did not say how long the suspension would last but said it would continue to suspend students who stay.

“Now and always, we prioritize our students’ learning and living in an inclusive environment free from harassment,” the school said in a memo about the suspensions.

A Pro-Israel protest and a Pro-Palestinian counter protest took place at Columbia University on April 18, 2024.

Hirsi could not be immediately reached for comment.

Omar did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The Democrat, who represents Minnesota, is a Somali refugee who made history as one of the first two Muslim American women elected to Congress.

On Wednesday, Omar questioned Shafik about protests on campus during a congressional hearing in which Shafik strongly denounced antisemitism.

Omar told Shafik she was "appalled" to learn that Columbia suspended six students this month for their involvement in a pro-Palestinian panel event on campus.

“There has been a recent attack on the democratic rights of students across the country," Omar said.

At a news conference by Columbia Students for Justice in Palestine held outside Columbia University President Minouche Shafik's residence, student Layla Saliba condemned the clearing of the camp.

"What happened today at Columbia University was an act of violence towards Arab, Muslim, Palestinian students, Jewish students and just anybody who supports Palestinian liberation,” she said.

Saliba, in the school of social work, and others criticized Shafik, including for her testimony before Congress Wednesday. The arrests are part of an effort on campus to attack those with pro-Palestinian views, she said.

Tensions over free speech have erupted on some U.S. college campuses since the war between Hamas and Israel started in October.

A Pro-Israel protest and a Pro-Palestinian counter protest took place at Columbia University on April 18, 2024.

This week, the University of Southern California canceled a Muslim student's valedictorian speech out of security concerns. Last week, a University of California, Berkeley, professor  confronted a Muslim student  during a dinner for graduating law students.

The husband of a Queens school chief is being paid tens of thousands in taxpayer dollars to provide a mentoring program for boys that includes the purchase of flashy $650 suits, The Post has learned.

The arrangement, which has the blessing of Chancellor David Banks, financially benefits Queens South high school superintendent Josephine Van Ess, and reeks of cronyism, critics say.

Edward Van Ess, the superintendent’s husband, is co-founder and co-owner of  “The Modern Day Man,” a for-profit company, with business partner and fashion designer Ilbert Sanchez.

The company, which also does business as “Excellence in Every Thread,” has been hired so far by at least 10 mostly elementary and middle schools — six in the high-poverty Brooklyn district where Josephine Van Ess used to work as deputy superintendent.

It has collected $221,750 in Department of Education funds — all but $5,000 paid out in the past five months, records show.

Van Ess and Sanchez charge schools $16,000 to lead six weekly sessions for boys meant to build self-esteem, and guide them toward personal and career success.

Optional “add-ons” include field trips costing $2,500 and $1,500 each for sessions on topics such as substance abuse and financial literacy.

The program also provides “custom” suits tailored by Sanchez’s primary business,   “Garcon Couture .”

The fitted suits — priced at $650 each — come in bright colors like purple and magenta.

“It’s unacceptable,” a Brooklyn principal said. “We have children in shelters and temporary housing who need basic necessities and everyday clothing  — not pricey pimp suits.”

The DOE refused to explain whether the schools or the students’ families pay for the suits.

Neither are “required to purchase suits to participate,” said spokeswoman Chyann Tull.

Fashion designer Ilbert Sanchez, the co-owner of The Modern Day Man, measures a student to fit him for a suit.

“Suit purchases are an optional service that the vendors provide.”

After The Post inquired about the program on Friday, the price list was deleted from the company website.

The City Charter requires that any full-time city employee with an ownership interest in a company doing business with the city either relinquish it or disclose it to the Conflicts of Interest Board.

Banks sent a letter to the COIB on July 10, asking the board to grant Josephine Van Ess, who makes $205,000 a year, a waiver to retain her “imputed ownership interest” in her husband’s company.  He owns 50%.

The Van Ess business “does not conflict with the purposes and interests of the City,” Banks told the COIB.

The chancellor also noted the company is a registered “Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprise.” Mayor Adams and Banks have made the hiring of Black- and women-owned vendors a priority.

The COIB granted a waiver on July 31, but set several conditions that bar Josephine Van Ess from any involvement in her husband’s company or in any DOE discussion or decision concerning the company.

The company agreed not to “solicit or do business” with schools in Districts 27, 28, and 29, which she now oversees in southern Queens, but it “seeks to pursue and perform work for all other DOE schools,” the COIB waiver states.

Josephine Van Ess supervised six of the 10 schools that have hired her husband’s company in Brownsville’s District 23 when she worked as a deputy superintendent for nearly three years before Banks promoted her in June 2022.

She has many contacts there.

The current superintendent, Khalek Kirkland, extolled the Modern Day Man program on X this month.

Van Ess was hired by then-District 23 Superintendent Miatheresa Pate, now a chief of school support, who has come under scrutiny for running a side business selling leadership conferences, online courses and books.

Danika Rux, Bank’s deputy chancellor for leadership, also served as a District 23 deputy superintendent.

Rux was promoted in a secret deal to give her husband a DOE managerial job in exchange for dropping his work for the DOE as a vendor.

“It’s a family enterprise — the family and friends of Banks and Adams,” the Brooklyn principal charged.

Chancellor David Banks, center, with Edward Van Ess, at left, and Ilbert Sanchez with all three men smiling into the camera as they stand side by side

Leonie Haimson, an education activist and DOE watchdog, called Banks’ request for the Van Ess waiver “unrestrained cronyism — another reason we should have moved away from mayoral control.”

Two principals in District 23 — Marica Myrie at Mott Hall IV middle school, and Arabelle Pembroke, at Riverdale Avenue Middle School — gave video “testimonials” praising “The Modern Day Man” on its website.

Penalties include fines of up to $25,000 per violation.

The DOE would not say whether it granted the two principals permission.

The principals did not answer questions.

The DOE had no comment on criticism of the COIB waiver, but defended The Modern Day Man.

“The vendor’s programming is built on the foundation of providing mentorship and a safe space for the young people involved, not in providing custom suits,” Tull said.

Edward and Josephine Van Ess did not return messages.
