What it's Like to Be a Cruise Ship Comedian

Comedian Jimmy Dunn, who made his David Letterman debut just last month, spent half of his 25-year career telling jokes on cruise lines. As a result, he's traveled everywhere from the South Pacific to Eastern Europe, and has written a book about the whole experience called Boat Hack: A Stand-Up Comic’s Farewell to The Cruise Industry . We asked him about his time on the ship, funny cruise stories, and cruise tips.
What's great about being a cruise comic?
The travel opportunities are amazing. I went to some of the most incredible places in the world—and got paid to go. I've crossed the Bering Sea and looked into a whale's eye from 20 feet away. I've been to the Hermitage in Russia. I've been to every island in the Caribbean. I've eaten dinner canal-side in Venice. All while on the clock! Most people save their entire lives to go on one cruise vacation. I've been on hundreds—and left every time with a check.
What's not so great about the job?
The accommodations got worse every trip. When I first started working the boats, spare guest rooms were plentiful. They'd always have a vacant room, often with a balcony, sometimes a suite. Today, every single room on a ship is sold through last minute internet deals, so the entertainer's cabin was born. It's a tiny cell in some otherwise unusable location of the ship, usually sharing a wall with a winch or an engine mount. It's like sleeping under a subway.
When you were on board, how much actual performing did you do?
Every cruise has a different entertainment schedule. The newer ships have full-time comedy clubs, where you perform nightly. It's like a casino gig in Vegas—one or two shows every night. Other ships have you headline the main stage. On those, you perform one or two nights a week.
What did you do during your down time?
I took every opportunity to explore. As soon as the boat tied up, I was gone. I'd rent a Jeep or a motorcycle, and go in the opposite direction of the tour buses. A beach to swim or surf, a mountain to hike, a village to eat. Those were my days. And at 4:59, I was the last one back aboard, usually sun burnt with a full belly.
Jimmy Dunn at the cruise Comedy Club
Did you ever hang out with passengers, or cruise staffers?
I did mingle from time to time. Occasionally I'd have dinner with some of the passengers. Once you perform, your cover is blown. Then everyone wants to talk to the comedian. They all ask the same questions. Do you live on the boat? Do you eat with the crew? Have you tried to get on TV, because you're really funny? I have a very outgoing personality, so I enjoyed meeting interesting people. Many of the comics hide in their rooms. Not me. I'd put on a suit and make a night of it. Some folks became friends. I still keep in touch with a few. The cruise staffers are usually working all the time. They resented the guest entertainers, so we usually didn't socialize much. I played cards one night with some officers and a couple guys from the band. Took most of their money, so that was a long cruise.
What was your favorite cruise route?
My favorite cruise is the European run that starts in England, goes up through Scandinavia, and turns around in Russia. It's an amazing adventure. Every morning, you pull in to a new port in a new country with a new culture. Scandinavia in the spring is gorgeous. Friendly people and waffle vendors every 50 feet. I also love the Japanese ports. Tokyo is so cool—and crazy food.
Least favorite?
The Caribbean—pretty much all of it has become one giant, Jimmy Buffett t-shirt shop. Ten megaships, fighting for dock space every day. Sweaty guys in pirate costumes trying to hawk you off the street and into their bars for Tiki Tuesdays. In Rotan Honduras, they left a note under your door the morning of arrival, warning of robberies and deadly insects.
What’s your funniest cruise story?
I had a friend who was coming on the ship after me. I knew he was going to get the entertainer's cabin, so I bought a fish on the dock the day before and left it in his bathroom cabinet. He found it—on day three.
Best cruise performance you ever saw?
I saw a singing and dancing show on a tiny ship in 20-foot seas. The ship was swinging like a pendulum. To this day, when I hear the Elton John song about kings and vagabonds, I see a 6 foot blonde dancer hit the ground like a baby deer.
What tips do you have for cruise passengers?
Save up for the balcony. There is no better way to see the world than from your deck in a robe while sipping a cocktail. Do your homework. Research the ports. Plan your day. Find out where the big attractions are and go the other way. Carry U.S. cash, small bills. Alexander Hamilton is still recognized around the world. Don't go to the dolphin show. They're not in show business, they're hostages. Don't be the ugly tourist that haggles with the locals for the ten dollar painting. Give the girl the ten bucks. Bring water shoes! One sea urchin can ruin an entire vacation. Oh, and don't even ask what it is until after you eat it.

The Inaugural COMIC-CON: THE CRUISE Sets Sail in 2025
- February 17, 2024
Taking to the seas, Comic-Con: The Cruise , The Ultimate Fan Adventure, is getting ready to sail for the first time. On February 5-9, 2025, Guest Host Felicia Day will lead the voyage of 2000 fans, along with special guests from Tampa FL to Cozumel.
RELATED: [SDCC2023] BoxLunch and Entertainment Weekly Celebrate Fandom with Treat Truck at San Diego Comic-Con
Known for their world-renowned conventions across the United States, including San Diego this new adventure seems to be all about a fan-focused environment. Instead of just seeing your favorite actors and creators on stage or in a panel, Comic-Con: The Cruise invites them to dine, party, and interact with the fans.
Comic-Con: The Cruise Has Everything Included
Setting sail on Royal Caribbean’s Serenade of the Seas, tickets begin at $990 per person. However, that includes all lodging, meals, performances, interviews, parties, and events. When you take into consideration how much people spend to travel to conventions in San Diego or New York, it’s pretty comparable. Plus, you don’t have to deal with the traffic, accidentally lodging too far, or overcrowding. Overcrowding has become a huge issue for Comic-Con, including being a reason why people will refuse to go in the first place. Last year, it was estimated that 200,000 people showed up for New York in October. So, offering another option, one with a different vibe to the fan experience, that caps out at 2,000 sounds exciting.
Plus, if it goes well, it’s more likely we will see multiple cruises throughout the year, than just cramming more people into one. A great note to add here is the cruise is a full-ship charter meaning, there won’t be other random people sailing with you.
Packed Full of Entertainment
One of the best things about Comic-Con: The Cruise, is the more intimate experience with amazing, popular arts icons fans can expect. Currently announced for talent are Warwick Davis, George Takei, Ernie Hudson, Mary McDonnell, Michael Trucco, and Robb Pearlman; with many more looking to be announced throughout 2024.
There are a lot of questions on how exactly the convention will break down day to day. Most conventions have their panels, show floor, and meet-ups, during the day. In the evening we get sponsored after parties that could be anywhere within blocks. However, in this situation, everything is on the cruise and the ports-of-call make timing a little weird. Day one consists of departing Tampa, Florida at 4 PM. Day 2 and Day 4 are both days completely at sea, being probably the two main convention days. Day 3, is scheduled to be in Cozumel, Mexico. That is where the first question pops up, is the convention scheduled around that day or is it a this or that choice? Lastly, you arrive back in Tampa at 6 AM.
What we do know is between what the ship has to offer and the convention, fans will be busy making memories and having fun. Not only will there be themed nights and cosplay, but there is a selection of nightly entertainment. Check out comedy sets, game shows, musical performances, dramatic script readings, and more. On top of that, there are also interactive events. This is another area that really piques our interest. On the website, it talks about a chance to mingle with celebrities from “yoga sessions, karaoke battles, and whiskey tastings, to blackjack showdowns and trivia for the most devoted fans.”
Overall, everything we know so far makes The Ultimate Fan Adventure look amazing. With a recent rise of interest in cruising and such success of fan-centered cruises like The Broadway Cruise and Chris Jericho Rock ‘N’ Wrestling Cruise, this seems like this could be a hit for fans who are looking to shake up their convention experience.

Image, Skybound Developing a Cruise Ship Con for 2022-2023
Image Comics and Skybound Entertainment are planning to host a comic convention on a cruise ship in 2022 or 2023.
Image Comics and Skybound Entertainment are planning a comic convention for a cruise ship that will take place in either 2022 or 2023.
According to Newsarama , the two companies have sent out survey emails on some of their listservs to gauge interest. The plan is for the ship to sail from either Miami or Los Angeles.
RELATED: The Horrors of Civil War Come to Life in Image Comics' Two Moons
"Calling All Comics Lovers! It's been a wild year, to say the least, and we've been spending a lot of time thinking about ways to bring the comic community back together when things are safe. Our solution? A good ol' vacation!" read the survey's introduction. "We know everyone could use one, and we'd love to get your feedback on bringing the con floor to the ocean with an immersive cruise vacation centered around all things comics. From when you feel comfortable setting sail with fellow fans again to where you'd like to go, fill out the survey and let us know!"
If the cruise convention does come to pass, it would not be the first time the comic industry hit the open seas. Several smaller companies hosted cruise conventions in the 1990s and 2000s, and Fan2Sea Entertainment launched what was supposed to be an annual comic event on Royal Caribbean's Brilliance of the Seas in 2017. However, despite 2,200 people attending, Fan2Sea never hosted a second event.

When is the best time to cruise?
Here are AAA’s trend forecasts for the best times to cruise in 2024, according to the kind of cruise you choose:
- The Caribbean is popular year-round, but spring and summer are the most popular sailing times.
- Alaska cruise season runs from May to September. Because this is an abbreviated period, there’s more competition for availability.
- Weekend cruises have gained popularity in recent years. Weekend warriors have realized the value an all-inclusive cruise compared to a weekend getaway in a big city resort. Cruise lines have recognized this growing trend and are making weekend cruises more of a priority in 2024, by mobilizing some of their newest ships to accessible ports for weekend excursions.
- European river cruising is now operational year-round. Because European travel is most popular during the summer, travelers can avoid the crowds and find lower priced cruises and airfares in the early and later parts of the year.
