2 Carnival Cruise ships collide in Cozumel, Mexico; at least 6 people injured

Two Carnival Cruise ships collided at the port of Cozumel, Mexico, on Friday morning, causing damage to at least one of the ships and at least six reported injuries, according to the company.

"Carnival Glory was maneuvering to dock when it made contact with Carnival Legend which was already alongside," a spokesperson for the company wrote in an emailed statement. "We are assessing the damage but there are no issues that impact the seaworthiness of either ship."

Initially, there was only one reported minor injury of a Carnival Glory guest that occurred when a group was being evacuated from the dining room of one ship's decks 3 and 4. But the cruise line said that since its preliminary evaluation, six guests with minor injuries "have presented themselves to the Carnival Glory medical center for evaluation."

Makenna Morris, 21, from Salt Lake City, Utah, said that she was on the fourth deck of the Carnival Legend taking pictures when she noticed the Carnival Glory moving toward her ship. She said that as the Carnival Glory approached, she could hear passengers screaming as they prepared for the impact.

"I started hearing people yelling and screaming on the Royal Caribbean," Morris told NBC News. "That’s when I heard sounds of cracking and glass breaking.”

Morris also recalled hearing what sounded like scraping as the Carnival Glory made impact with the Carnival Legend.

“They ran into us and I was like 'holy crap'," Morris said. “The whole dining hall caved in and shattered.”

Cozumel News

Cozumel, Q.R. — Two American cruise ship tourists to Cozumel were killed Tuesday in a highway accident. The pair were traveling the island’s Southern Coastal Highway on a rented motorcycle when they crashed.

Both passengers and the motorcycle ended up in thick roadside vegetation and went unnoticed for several hours. It wasn’t until Tuesday night that a passing motorist saw the crashed motorcycle. Upon inspecting the site, they saw what appeared to be a body.

Police responding to the report of a possible crash site arrived to find the motorcycle nearly two meters off the road along with the two American passengers laying face down. Island paramedics pronounced 62-year-old Diane “B” and 72-year-old Robert “B”, both from Norfolk, Virginia, dead at the scene.

Two Carnival Cruise Line ships collided off the coast of Cozumel, Mexico, on Friday.

Video footage of the incident captured the Carnival Glory sliding into the Carnival Legend, and the moment of impact shattering the Glory's back windows.

A spokesman for Carnival Cruise Line told The Washington Post that the crash was an "allision," because technically one was not moving. The Legend was docked when the Glory crashed.

Passengers aboard the ships - who felt the collision firsthand - shared their varying experiences when from the point of impact.

Jordan Moseley, a passenger on the Carnival Legend, told Reuters that he was eating breakfast on the ship when he felt the crash.

"All of a sudden we felt the ship rock to one side and then back into place," Moseley told Reuters. "A few minutes later, the cruise director announced that the Carnival Glory had crashed into our ship while docking due to the high winds and rough ocean conditions in Cozumel."

Another Carnival Legend passenger, Christian Maxey, was in his cabin below deck during the crash. He told The Washington Post that the ocean had been rough throughout the duration of the cruise, so he didn't think much of the crash.

"I don't think people really understood that we had actually hit something, given that our weather had been rocky," he told The Post.

Mary Anne McKinley, another passenger aboard the Carnival Legend, echoed a similar sentiment of mistaking the crash for a big wave.

"The crash wasn't too bad," McKinley told CNN . "Just felt like a big wave crashing into the ship."

The same could be said for one passenger aboard the opposite ship Carnival Glory, Maddison Haynes.

"Last night we experienced some major motion on the boat, so this morning we assumed something similar was happening," Haynes told CNN. "We felt a jolt and didn't really think anything of it."

Carnival Legend passenger Makenna Morris, who was on the fourth deck of the boat when the crash happened, told NBC News that she could hear passengers screaming as the Carnival Glory moved closer to their ship.

"I started hearing people yelling and screaming on the Royal Caribbean," Morris told NBC News . "That's when I heard sounds of cracking and glass breaking."

Being on one of the upper decks, Morris was able to see the damage of the crash first-hand.

"They (the Carnival Glory) ran into us and I was like 'holy crap'," Morris said. "The whole dining hall caved in and shattered."

Six passengers sustained "minor injuries" in the crash, The New York Times reported.

"We are assessing the damage but there are no issues that impact the seaworthiness of either ship," Chelsea Stromfeld, a spokeswoman for the cruise line, told The Times. "We have advised guests from both ships to enjoy their day ashore in Cozumel."

'Oh my God, look at that ship!': massive cruise liners collide off Mexico

By Lizbeth Diaz

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Two Carnival Corp cruise ships collided on Friday in the port of Mexico's Caribbean resort of Cozumel, the luxury cruise operator said, crushing the stern of a 952-foot-long (290-meter) vessel and leaving passengers stunned at the loud impact.

One person was lightly injured while evacuating a dining room on the massive ship named Carnival Glory, according to Carnival, the world's largest cruise operator. A passenger said the incident occurred during rough sea conditions.

"Carnival Glory was maneuvering to dock when it made contact with Carnival Legend which was already alongside," the company said in a statement. "We are assessing the damage but there are no issues that impact the seaworthiness of either ship."

Carnival added that the ship itineraries were not affected.

Civil protection authorities in Cozumel said the incident took place at around 8:30 a.m. (1430 GMT) and that officials were investigating.

Passenger Jordan Moseley said he was eating breakfast on the docked Carnival Legend, a 963-foot-long (294-meter) ship that can hold more than 2,000 passengers, when he felt the crash.

"All of a sudden we felt the ship rock to one side and then back into place," Moseley told Reuters. "A few minutes later, the cruise director announced that the Carnival Glory had crashed into our ship while docking due to the high winds and rough ocean conditions in Cozumel."

A video taken from an upper deck of Carnival Glory, which can carry nearly 3,000 passengers, shows pieces of the ship tumble onto the deck of the oncoming vessel, with some splashing into the churning water.

"Oh my God, look at that ship!" an onlooker can he heard saying in the video posted on social media.

Other images of the battered vessel show a railing along the Carnival Glory stern bent downwards at a roughly 45-degree angle, revealing a twisted and mangled ship interior.

Christopher Macijeski, who was on a third cruise ship nearby, said there was a loud boom from the impact.

"Could see it coming before it happened," he said.

Carnival Cruise Line gives possible cause of accident in Mexico, apologizes to guests

Carnival Cruise Line ships collide in Mexico

Two ships for Carnival Cruise collided at a port in Cozumel on Monday morning. The company confirmed that one passenger was injured during an evacuation.

In a letter sent to guests on Friday, Carnival Cruise Line apologized for an earlier accident in Cozumel, Mexico , during which the Carnival Glory came into contact with the Carnival Legend while docking , resulting in six passengers sustaining minor injuries.

The captain of the Carnival Glory also confirmed an investigation into the cause of the accident, which the company currently believes was due to “spontaneous wind gusts and strong currents.”

CRUISE LINE ENLISTS 'LOVE BOAT' AND 'BACHELORETTE' STARS FOR WORLD RECORD ATTEMPT

“Dear Carnival Glory Guest,” begins the letter, which is attributed to Carnival Glory Captain Pero Grubjesic. “Welcome back from your day ashore. We hope you enjoyed your time in Cozumel.”

Grubjesic then apologized for that morning’s incident, which occurred as the Glory was “maneuvering” into its docking position, he said.

“A formal investigation is underway to confirm the cause of the accident, which we believe was due to spontaneous wind gusts and strong currents. The ship has been inspected by the required authorities and there are no issues that impact our ability to sail safely back to New Orleans.”

Grubjesic also confirmed that the six guests who presented themselves for medical examination following the collision had already been treated and released.

“Once again, we apologize for the disruption this may have caused,” Grubjesic wrote. “We will be extending a US$100, per stateroom, onboard credit to your Sail & Sign account.”

The ship itself stayed docked in Cozumel shortly longer than anticipated, Carnival says, to “complete some of our work.” Carnival Cruise Line also confirmed that guests planning to dine in the Platinum Restaurant dining area that evening would be accommodated, presumably as a result of the incident.

The ship left port in Cozumel on Friday evening at approximately 9 p.m. CST.

The initial incident, which Carnival is referring to as an allision as opposed to a collision (seeing as one of the ships was not actually moving at the time), took place on Friday morning at approximately 8:50 a.m.

Footage taken by onlookers shows the Carnival Glory maneuvering toward the dock alongside the Carnival Legend, scraping its stern against the Legend’s bow.

Carnival had initially received reports of one person injured while being evacuated from a dining area; five additional minor injuries were reported by Friday afternoon.

The Carnival Glory is due back in New Orleans on Dec. 22.

Retired Ship's Captain Explains Cruise Ship Crash In Cozumel

December 21, 2019 / 12:03 AM EST / CBS Boston

BOSTON (CBS) -- Two Carnival cruise ships collided off the Mexican island of Cozumel Friday. One ship was damaged and six people were hurt when one boat cut right through the other. But how did it happen?

The crash, called an "allision" in nautical terms because the Legends ship was already docked when the moving Carnival Glory swiped it while trying to dock, wiping out the windows of the Glory's Platinum Restaurant. It was empty at the time, but six passengers suffered minor injuries.

The boats crashed at the docks, and is believed to be caused by sudden high winds. Retired ship's captain John Loftus said accidents like this are not uncommon.

"They're big pieces of machinery, a ship, and they don't stop like a car," Loftus said.

CRUISE SHIP COLLISION 11 PKG

In a letter to passengers Friday night, Carnival Glory's captain wrote: "I apologize for the accident that occurred this morning as Carnival Glory was maneuvering to her docking position. A formal investigation is underway to confirm the cause of the accident, which we believe was due to spontaneous wind gusts and strong currents."

Watching the video, Loftus said the wind was likely a factor.

"What I did note was it was windy-- looked like 20 to 25 knots," he said. "So that was pushing her down onto the Legend's bow."

Passengers spent the day exploring Cozumel before getting back on board the ship. Despite the aesthetic damage, it was deemed seaworthy and left just after 9:00 a.m. Friday morning to continue its regular schedule.

"It happens more than you think," Loftus said. "That was a fairly minor collision."

Passengers on the Glory were given $100 to spend on board the ship before it docks in New Orleans on Sunday.

A Carnival cruise ship smashed into another cruise ship — and nearly clipped a second vessel — while docking at a port in Mexico, according to videos from the scene.

The massive Carnival Glory was sailing into a dock in Cozumel when it struck the Carnival Legend, which was already anchored nearby, the cruise ship company told Fox61.com .

The incident happened at the Mexican port of Cozumel.

New York Post reports of the incident, which happened Friday morning local time, one person suffered a minor injury on Glory as groups of guests were being evacuated from third- and fourth-floor dining rooms after the crash, according to the outlet.

Dramatic video footage shows the mangled Glory — with smashed-out windows and a bent railing — after it passed too close to the prow of the Legend.

Civil protection authorities in Cozumel said the incident took place at around 8.30am local time on Friday and that officials were investigating. Passenger Jordan Moseley said he was eating breakfast on the docked Carnival Legend, a 294m ship that can hold more than 2000 passengers, when he felt the crash.

Carnival Glory cruise ship ocean liner in Cape Canaveral, Florida.

“All of a sudden we felt the ship rock to one side and then back into place,” Moseley told Reuters.

“A few minutes later, the cruise director announced that the Carnival Glory had crashed into our ship while docking due to the high winds and rough ocean conditions in Cozumel.”

A video taken from an upper deck of Carnival Glory, which can carry nearly 3000 passengers, shows pieces of the ship tumble on to the deck of the oncoming vessel, with some splashing into the churning water.

“Oh my God, look at that ship!” an onlooker can he heard saying in the video posted on social media.

Passengers disembark from the Carnival Dream in Cozumel Mexico, on a previous cruise.

Other images of the battered vessel show a railing along the Carnival Glory stern bent downwards at a roughly 45-degree angle, revealing a twisted and mangled ship interior.

Christopher Macijeski, who was on a third cruise ship nearby, said there was a loud boom from the impact.

“Could see it coming before it happened,” he said.

Cozumel, a tropical island off the coast of Cancun, Mexico, in the Riviera Maya is a popular tourist destination.

The Legend is reportedly based in Tampa, Florida, and the Glory is based in New Orleans.

Brad solomon, 66, became separated from his family while their cruise ship was docked in cozumel - the busiest port in the caribbean..

A cruise guest suffering from frontotemporal dementia has sparked a multi-agency search after disappearing in Mexico .

Edmond Bradley Solomon, 66, went missing during a break in Cozumel, Mexico on April 3 as he became separated from his family during a seven-day cruise around the Caribbean .

Multiple agencies have joined forces to look for the missing 66-year-old across the busiest port town in the Caribbean as they try to locate the man as quickly as possible.

Solomon suffers from a form of dementia that causes him difficulties in communicating and complex processes.

The man had been aboard the Royal Caribbean International’s Icon of the Seas ship with his family and had been on a day visit to the town when they became separated.

His wife Mimi immediately contacted local authorities to raise the alarm and she has remained in Cozumel after the ship departed again to help search for her missing husband.

A taxi driver claimed to have picked up a man fitting Solomon's description around 2.30 pm on Wednesday nearly a mile away from the cruise ship berth.

The man said the customer claimed to have no money and instead traded his wristwatch for a ride to the beach. Authorities have not confirmed where the man might have been last seen but the initial search was focus in the La Pasion island area.

Solomon was wearing a white shirt and gray shorts, a blue cap, sunglasses and white shoes when he disappeared.

Mimi Solomon also said he routinely wears a GPS tracker in the form of a necklace

The Charleston man had departed Miami with his family on March 30 and had already visited Costa Maya and Roatan before the Icon of the Seas, the biggest cruise ship in the world, docked in Cozumel.

At the time of Solomon's disappearance, another four cruise ships had been visiting the island and Cozumel was extremely busy.

Because of his frontotemporal dementia diagnosis, the 66-year-old could easily have become disoriented or distracted, leaving him unable to head back to the ship.

The Municipal Police of Cozumel have worked with other local agencies to locate Solomon and have deployed air, sea and land resources to help with the search.

The family have started a GoFundMe page to help Mimi Solomon with the cost of staying in Cozumel during the search.

Friend Marissa Aldridge said: "Mimi and Brad are both nurses who have dedicated their lives and careers to helping others. Mimi works at the local VA Hospital and is one of the most compassionate nurses I have ever worked with.

"She is also a breast cancer survivor. Between cancer and dementia, they have been through so much in the last few years and yet Mimi still shows up everyday to take care of others. Please help take care of Mimi and Brad."

South Carolina man vanishes from cruise after getting off at popular port of Cozumel, Mexico

A beloved dad's family has sifted through false leads and hit dead ends over the last five days after Edmond Bradley Solomon III vanished.

The 66-year-old Charleston, South Carolina , family patriarch was last seen on April 3, when a Royal Caribbean cruise ship stopped in the popular tourist hot spot Cozumel, Mexico.

Minutes after getting off the ship, he went to the bathroom and disappeared, according to his family, who said he was recently diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia , a group of diseases caused by progressive nerve cell loss that affects a person’s behavior and not memory.

"No major updates. Many false leads today," his daughter, Savannah Miller, said Monday morning from Mexico. "It is very distressing for us to have hope and then be let down."

Solomon was on a Royal Caribbean cruise with his wife, Mimi, when they stopped in Mexico, where they planned to spend the day.

He went to the bathroom around 1-1:30 p.m., minutes after they got off the ship.

"When my stepmom, Mimi, came out, he wasn’t there," Miller told WCBD-TV . "She thought he might still be in the bathroom, so she waited for him for a few minutes. He didn’t come out."

Solomon spent his life caring for others as a VA critical care nurse. He retired after 20 years, Miller told Fox News Digital, and his wife is also a nurse at a local VA hospital and a breast cancer survivor.

"Please, everyone, no matter where you are, continue to spread the word," Miller said. "We are begging you to share this on socials, so that we can increase awareness and gain more news coverage. The more people who are aware, the quicker we will find him."

Solomon's family is in Mexico looking for him. Miller provided an update on Facebook late Sunday, saying her dad's AirTag – "if he is still wearing it" – is only 33 feet from his wife's phone.

"My dad walks really fast, and he does not have eyeglasses on like he usually does," Miller said. "He will often nod his head down and focus on the ground while walking. The more anxious he is feeling, the quicker he goes."

Over the last few days, local police and the retired nurse's family have been scouring Cozumel, an island in the Caribbean off the coast of Mexico.

Miller said her family and police followed "several leads" to no avail. The most promising tip came at around 6 p.m. on Sunday, when someone thought they had seen him at a large grocery store.

However, she told Fox News Digital that police investigated the tip, but it did not lead to anything. "After three hours of driving and walking the surrounding areas, we were not able to find him," she said.

Solomon "has a generally calm or apathetic attitude, and will probably refuse help if offered, especially from a stranger," Miller said.

She and her family are worried that this trait, coupled with his fast-paced walk, makes him look like he is heading somewhere "with conviction."

"But he is not," Miller said. "He is lost and scared. He cannot show or process emotions like a healthy person would. Unfamiliar people or situations are intimidating to him. He does not know how to respond and will avoid."

She said everyone in Cozumel has been helpful and kind to her and her family as they navigate through the stormy waters.

In the United States, Missing Persons of America, a Facebook group created by a military family, created their own missing person flyers.

Family and friends set up a GoFundMe for the family.

"Between cancer and dementia, (Mimi and Solomon III) have been through so much in the last few years and yet Mimi still shows up every day to take care of others," the GoFundMe says. "Please help take care of Mimi and Brad."

Miller said anyone in Cozumel should send tips to the Cozumel police.

For anyone in the U.S., "we ask that they continue to share the story and sentiments about my dad if they know him to raise awareness and to stay positive."

Edmond Bradley Solomon III, who suffers from dementia, was last seen at the SSA Pier in Cozumel wearing a white tank top, gray shorts, and dark glasses.

The Seguridad Ciudadana Cozumel ( SCC ), along with the Directorate of Public Security, the Secretary of the Navy, and the Civil Protection Cozumel, are spearheading a comprehensive search over land, sea, and air.

Initial searches were carried out in and around Passion Island, a popular cruise ship excursion located on the northern end of the island, but proved fruitless. By Friday, the FBI had been called in to assist in the search efforts..

On Wednesday, the day on which Solomon went missing, five cruise ships — Carnival Valor, Celebrity Ascent, Celebrity Apex, Norwegian Prima and Icon of the Seas — called to Cozumel, bringing over 20,000 passengers to the island.

According to reports, Solomon wandered off alone and has been missing since 1 p.m. on Wednesday. His wife, Mimi, debarked the ship and is currently staying in a hotel in Cozumel, Mexico awaiting word of her husband’s whereabouts.

In a plea on social media , Solomon’s daughter posted that her missing father “has frontotemporal dementia and can no longer understand complex processes or communicate clearly in conversation. He is very friendly and loves to meet new people, but due to his disease he is more quiet/reserved these days. He’s a figure-it-out-er, and that is how he approaches life.”

She said he had no phone or wallet and that “he traded his watch for a taxi ride yesterday [Wednesday], and that is the last we know of him.”

Anyone with information on his whereabouts are asked to report any information to authorities in Cozumel.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist with expenses for his wife. The GoFundMe organizer, who is a co-worker of Mrs. Solomon, said of the couple:

The Icon of the Seas, renowned as an exceptional vessel for luxurious travel, gracefully sails through the water on its inaugural cruise.

Icon of the Seas is currently on a seven-night Western Caribbean sailing from Miami, with stops this week in Costa Maya, Roatan Island, Cozumel, and CocoCay, and returning to Miami on Saturday morning.

At the time of publication, Royal Caribbean had not responded to requests for comment or further information.

  • Police said Edmund Solomon, 66, was reported missing Wednesday after disappearing in the area of Passion Island that afternoon
  • Solomon reportedly has frontotemporal dementia, which is said to impact behavior more than memory

An American tourist with dementia has gone missing in Mexico, triggering a multi-day search.

Edmund Solomon, 66, was reported missing at 8:17 p.m. local time on Wednesday, April 3, according to a Facebook post from Cozumel Civil Protection .

The man’s wife said her husband, who has “advanced dementia,” was wearing a collar with a GPS device to monitor his location when he disappeared in the area of Passion Island, per the Facebook post.

Solomon, who also goes by the name Brad, was “vacationing with family on a Royal Caribbean” cruise when he “wandered off by himself” around 1 p.m., Marissa Aldridge, who has worked with Solomon's wife, wrote in the description of a GoFundMe campaign she started for the couple.

Savannah Miller, the South Carolina man's daughter, said Brad had gone to the restroom at the cruise ship’s terminal when he disappeared, according to NBC affiliate WCBD-TV and ABC affiliate WCIV .

“When my stepmom, Mimi, came out, he wasn’t there,” Miller explained. “She thought he might still be in the bathroom so she waited for him for a few minutes. He didn’t come out.”

Miller said Brad was recently diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, which impacts behavior more than memory, according to WCBD-TV.

“He sometimes says odd things and behaves erratically — or oddly — because he’s just doing what he knows how to do,” Miller noted. “He can’t process the same way you or I can.”

Authorities said a taxi driver called 911 and reported picking up a foreign tourist who matched Brad’s description on the road to La Pasión island, according to Mexico News Daily .

Brad is believed to have entered the taxi on 65th Avenue around 2:30 p.m., asked to be dropped off at a road with access to the beach and later paid with a wristwatch.

Both Brad and his wife Mimi are nurses who “dedicated their lives and careers to helping others,” Aldridge said on GoFundMe. Mimi, who works at the local VA Hospital, is also a recent breast cancer survivor.

“Between cancer and dementia, they have been through so much in the last few years,” Aldridge wrote, “and yet Mimi still shows up everyday to take care of others.”

In a statement, Royal Caribbean said they are “working closely with local law enforcement, who is continuing the search” for Brad, according to WCIV.

“Our care team is providing support and assistance to the guest’s family during this difficult time,” the cruise line added.

Royal Caribbean did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
