Reservations are not necessary and tickets can be purchased at the attraction ticket window. During a typical season the boat rides below Niagara Falls opens in late April or early May and runs until mid to late October.

All guests are issued a disposable plastic poncho to wear during the tour which will keep you reasonably dry. When the boat gets close to the Canadian Falls is where you will encounter the majority of mist. If you wish to stay dry simply move to another location on the boat where there is less mist. The tour lasts 15-20 minutes. For clothing, summer is for shorts and t-shirts. A pair of beach shoes or sneakers work fine but don’t wear anything you wouldn’t want to get damp. For spring and fall weather you need to dress appropriately for the local weather and just expect to get slightly damp. Usually you will have the ability to get great photos right up until you get close to the base of the Canadian Falls. Remember that even a slight mist on your camera lens will ruin any photo!

The entrance is in Queen Victoria Park less than a minute walk from the base of Clifton Hill. Parking is available at one of three very large parking lots near Queen Victoria Park. The closest parking lot which does require taking stairs to the park is on Clifton Hill and aptly named Clifton Hill Parking . For navigation use:  4960 Clifton Hill Parking , Niagara Falls Ontario Canada.

Skylon Tower parking lot is very close to the Clifton Hill Parking lot and you can either take stairs or the sidewalk on Murray St to get to the park. For navigation use:  Skylon Tower parking lot 5200 Robinson Street Niagara Falls Ontario Canada.

Niagara Parks parking lot use:  Niagara Falls Lot #1 6650 Niagara Pkwy, Niagara Falls Ontario Canada.

If the Niagara Parks lot is full when you enter they will direct you to one of their satellite lots which then requires using the WEGO shuttle bus service. This lot usually never fills to capacity except during the months of July and August. If you plan on visiting the brink of the Canadian Falls at Table Rock during your visit this is the most convenient parking lot to use.

This video displays the old Maid of the Mist boat passing in front of the American Falls.

Experience the Thrill of a Lifetime

The Hornblower Niagara Cruises , the best way to experience Niagarafalls, Canada’s most spectacular wonder of the world. Hornblower Niagara Cruises is the official Canadian operator of boat tours to Niagara Falls and is located along the Niagara Parkway at the base of Clifton Hill in the Tourist District. The Maid of the Mist , which had been operating boat tours at The Falls since 1846, has re-located to the U.S. side of the Falls. Both of them follow the same route up to and back from the Falls.

Within the Niagara Great Gorge the boat travels past the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and into the very heart of the famous Horseshoe Falls for an exciting experience with the waterfalls.

Hornblower Niagara Cruises has two brand-new 700 seats catamarans (Niagara Thunder & Niagara Wonder), with facilities such as enclosed-glass viewing areas and tiered viewing decks on the top levels.

Hornblower Niagara Cruises have sunset cocktail cruises that include the voyage to the Falls with time to mingle and enjoy the bottom of the gorge.

Hornblower won a 30-year contract to be the sole tour operator on the Canadian side of the Falls after a bidding process conducted by the Niagara Parks Commission in 2012.

Hornblower also offers a couple of different types of cruises, including a falls illumination cruise and fireworks cruise

Can I Cruise to Niagara Falls?

cruises niagara falls canada

Niagara Falls, of all the ports and attractions on a St. Lawrence Seaway or Great Lakes cruise (including Chicago, Quebec City or Montreal), rates no. 1 on most travelers' bucket lists. So, when you ask, "Can I get to Niagara Falls on a cruise?" the answer is a resounding, "You bet!"

Getting There

Consider this: Niagara Falls forms a drop of 176 feet on the Niagara River as it flows from Lake Erie into Lake Ontario. Your cruise ship, no matter how small or agile, won't be doing the actual sailing past, nor docking below the falls. As with shoreside visitors who flock to this natural wonder from either the Canadian (the majority of visitors choose this) or the U.S. side of the border, cruise passengers do the same. You'll arrive at the site of the falls by land, on a motor coach.

While you're busy snapping photos of the falls, your ship will be preparing to transit the Welland Canal, taking it from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario (or vice versa). Opened in 1829, the canal made it possible for cargo ships to transport goods from such ports as Cleveland and Detroit to Montreal, Quebec City and beyond. On the way to its destination, the ship passes through eight locks and drops 326 feet going from lake to lake.

On a nine-night Chicago to Toronto cruise aboard the 202-passenger Victory Cruise Lines' Victory I , everyone onboard has the chance to tour the falls on the last full day of the cruise. Your morning at the falls begins when you step off your ship on the Lake Erie side, in Port Colborne, Canada, and board a coach for a scenic ride past vineyards and grand winery estates to the falls.

Three distinct falls make up what we call Niagara Falls. American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls are found on the U.S. side, in New York State. Horseshoe Falls, the widest, most powerful and most spectacular of the three, is in Canada near the town of Niagara Falls and about an hour's drive from Toronto.

cruises niagara falls canada

Your chance to get up-close and personal with the falls will be aboard a Hornblower sightseeing boat. Enjoy a thrilling, 20-minute ride through the Great Niagara Gorge, past Bridal Veil Falls right into the spray and thundering roar of Horseshoe Falls. Prepare to get wet. Even though you're given a plastic poncho to wear, it can be so windy and misty, it's hard to keep yourself -- much less your camera -- covered and dry. On warmer days, it's a good idea to wear flip-flops or plastic sandals and pack a small towel in your backpack or leave one on the bus.

After time at the falls and before returning to your ship, the tour might continue with lunch at an area winery like Chateau des Charmes. Following lunch and wine tasting, of course, you'll have free time to explore Niagara-on-the-Lake, a charming, tree-lined Canadian town at the mouth of the Niagara River and on the shore of Lake Ontario.

Good to Know

In years of high water levels in the lakes and falls, Hornblower boat tours could be temporarily halted or canceled for safety reasons. Luckily for cruisers, your ship's excursion guides will replace the boat ride with another sightseeing tour. On the "Journey Behind the Falls," for example, you'll venture behind the mighty Horseshoe Falls. The tour begins with an elevator ride 125 feet down and behind the falls. You emerge via a series of tunnels on a viewing platform 13 stories below the crest of the falls. Is it wet? Oh yeah. That's why you're provided with a poncho. Along with this unusual vantage point, the thunder of water will make a lasting impression.

Once you return to your ship, the nighttime transit of the Welland Canal begins. Depending on freighter traffic, it can take nine to 12 hours to cruise through the eight locks.

Top Things to Do in Niagara Falls, Canada: Unraveling the Magic Beyond the Mist!

But what if I told you there's more to this city than just the iconic cascades? Let's dive in.

  • Niagara Falls isn't just one waterfall but a trio of wonders .
  • The city boasts a flurry of activities, from adventure to relaxation.
  • Wineries, festivals , and hidden spots enhance the experience.

Why Niagara Falls Deserves More Than A Day Trip

According to a report by the Niagara Falls Tourism Bureau, the city welcomes over 14 million visitors each year, making it one of the most visited tourist destinations in Canada .

But are all these visitors just coming for the falls?

The Triple Threat: Understanding the Falls

Fact : The Niagara Falls isn’t just one giant cascade.

It comprises three different waterfalls: the American Falls , the Bridal Veil Falls , and the Horseshoe Falls .

The last one is the big star, mostly located on the Canadian side.

It's not just a sight; it's an experience!

Unmissable Activities Around The Falls

Journey behind the falls.

Descending into the heart of Niagara, the journey behind the falls offers an intimate rendezvous with this natural wonder.

As the name suggests, this isn't your typical viewpoint; it's a subterranean odyssey that takes visitors through a network of tunnels carved out over a century ago.

The echoing roar of the falls grows louder as you approach the observation decks, offering a rare glimpse of water cascading at an overwhelming force mere feet away.

Each droplet tells a story of time, erosion, and nature's indomitable will. The ambient moisture, the coolness in the air, and the thundering sound create an atmosphere that's both surreal and exhilarating.

Here, you're not just observing Niagara Falls, you're experiencing its very essence, feeling its pulse, and becoming a part of a moment where nature's grandeur takes the front seat, and human insignificance is felt more profoundly than ever.

Hornblower Niagara Cruises

An adventure with the Hornblower Niagara Cruises is a rite of passage for every visitor to Niagara Falls.

As the vessel moves closer to the roaring waters, there's an undeniable blend of excitement and awe that engulfs you.

The sheer power of nature is on full display as the mist gently sprays your face, serving as a refreshing reminder of the falls' magnitude.

But beyond just the sensation, the cruise offers an unparalleled view.

The vast expanse of cascading waters, set against the sky, offers a perspective that’s both humbling and grand.

As the boat drifts along, guided narratives shed light on intriguing facts and tales associated with the falls.

Whether you choose the day cruise with rainbows arching above or the evening one with illuminations casting a magical glow on the waters, Hornblower ensures an immersive experience, making the iconic falls more than just a sight but a memory etched in every fiber of your being.

The Underrated Highlights

Wine and dine like a local.

And did someone say ice wine ? The local wineries offer exquisite tastings.

Festive Vibes All Year Round

Niagara Falls wears its festive spirit not just on its sleeve but in its very air, no matter the season. Here's a deeper dive into the celebrations that breathe life into the city:

Niagara Icewine Festival : Held during the chilly months, this festival is a toast to the region’s signature ice wines. Wineries open their doors to visitors, offering tastings of this sweet delight, paired often with gourmet food. The streets come alive with ice sculptures, live music, and locals and tourists alike reveling in the crisp winter air.

Winter Festival of Lights : The already breathtaking Niagara Falls takes on an ethereal quality as it gets illuminated with millions of lights. Stretching beyond just the falls, various parts of the city, including Dufferin Islands, are adorned with dazzling light displays. Animated shows, themed areas, and a vibrant atmosphere make it a winter wonderland.

Spring Flower Festival : As winter recedes, the parks and gardens of Niagara bloom in a riot of colors. Celebrating this natural spectacle, the Spring Flower Festival offers floral shows, workshops, and guided tours of beautifully manicured gardens.

Niagara Falls Summer Fireworks Series : Summer nights are lit! Literally. Against the backdrop of the falls, fireworks light up the sky, casting shimmering reflections on the water below. Accompanied by free concerts, this is the city’s way of celebrating balmy summer nights.

Niagara Grape & Wine Festival : Come fall, and it’s time for the region's vineyards to take center stage. A grand parade, wine tasting tours, and a celebration of the grape harvest make this an unmissable event for wine aficionados.

Year-round, Niagara pulsates with celebrations that mirror the changing seasons. Each festivity, unique in its essence, ensures that no matter when you visit, there's always a party waiting to be joined!

In the Words of Vinita Kinra...

"Niagara Falls is the hanging tongue on the face of the earth, drooling endlessly over its own beauty."

The Horseshoe Falls, mainly located on the Canadian side, is the largest.

What’s a must-try local wine in the Niagara region?

Definitely give ice wine a shot!

Any recommended time to visit Niagara Falls?

While summer offers numerous activities, winter has its own charm with festivals and illuminations.

Is Niagara Falls a good family destination?

Any hidden spots to recommend?

Flora Goodwin suggests grabbing a bite with a view at the Skylon Tower's revolving dining room.

Concluding Thoughts

Niagara Falls isn't just about the overwhelming power and mesmerizing beauty of the cascades—it’s a symphony of experiences.

From the gentle flutter of wings at the Butterfly Conservatory to the sweet allure of the region’s renowned ice wines, Niagara offers a blend of natural wonder, adventure, culture, and relaxation that few places in the world can match.

Its proximity to urban centers and yet its escape from the hustle and bustle make it an idyllic getaway, whether for romance, family fun, or solitary reflection.

As the thundering sounds of the falls fade into a backdrop, you'll find that Niagara has stories whispered by its historic streets, adrenaline pumped by its attractions, and serenity offered by its verdant spaces.

Whether it’s a first-time visit or a return trip, Niagara promises and delivers a fresh experience every time.

And so, in the spirit of discovery, whether you stand behind the falls feeling its power, soar above for panoramic vistas, or explore the countless treasures the region offers, Niagara Falls beckons not just as a sight to see, but as a story to be lived.

Every visit, every adventure, adds a new chapter to this timeless tale of wonder.
