Cunard Ships Compared

Cunard Line is one of the most historic cruise lines in the world, and is a true icon of the cruise industry. Even today, when there are much larger cruise lines offering all kinds of innovations and incredibly-sized super-ships, Cunard still offers something special.

Cunard ships

But if you’re considering cruising with Cunard, you’ll want to know more about the ships – what they offer, and what makes them different. This guide will explain all the similarities and differences between the Cunard fleet.

How many Cunard ships are there?

There are currently three ships in the Cunard fleet:

  • Queen Mary 2
  • Queen Victoria
  • Queen Elizabeth

A fourth ship – Queen Anne – is due to join the fleet in early 2024.

Cunard Ships History

Cunard ships by age, cunard ships by size, cunard ships dining, cunard ships facilities, cunard ships destinations.

The Cunard Line ships list is a lot smaller than many other cruise lines around the world, many of which have at least eight ships and some that have a fleet of over 20 vessels. But the modern Cunard Line is not about huge numbers – it’s about providing a unique experience that blends the history of cruising with contemporary amenities and features.

So don’t expect there to be a sudden announcement of a lot of new Cunard ships. It won’t happen – the fleet will always stay small and bespoke.

Cunard has a long history of shipping in general, having existed for almost 200 years. Over 240 ships have sailed for Cunard, including a mix of cruise ships, ocean liners, tender boats, ferries and cargo/container ships.

Cunard Steamship from 1878

For a time, Cunard Line was one of the biggest shipping companies in the world and has often been viewed as the biggest operator of transatlantic sailings.

The first ship to be named after a queen was Queen Mary, which launched in 1936. She was later joined by Queen Elizabeth, with both ships sailing for the cruise line until the late 1960s. Queen Elizabeth 2 then joined the fleet in 1969 and completed an impressive 39 years of service, finally retiring from the cruise line in 2008 and later opening as a floating hotel in Dubai.

The cruise line has operated other cruise ships in the past too, including Cunard Adventurer, Cunard Ambassador, Cunard Countess, Cunard Princess, Cunard Crown Monarch, Cunard Crown Jewel and Cunard Crown Dynasty.

How many Cunard ships have sunk?

Of all the ships to have ever been owned by Cunard Line (almost 250), 37 have sunk. However, the vast majority of these were either 19th Century shipwrecks, or sunk during the World Wars by U-boats. None of the cruise ships sailing for Cunard in the past century have sunk.

The most famous ship to have sunk for Cunard was a cruise ship of sorts. Technically an ocean liner, the Lusitania was sunk in 1915 by the German navy, resulting in a loss of over 1,100 lives.

Sinking of the Lusitania from The Illustrated London News, May 15, 1915

The modern Cunard fleet is very safe and has not seen any of the ships sunk. All of the incidents that have occurred were with old ships, and mostly during wartime. Many were cargo ships too and so were prime targets for enemies.

Was Titanic a Cunard ship?

The Titanic was not a Cunard Line ship. It was owned by White Star Line, considered a rival of Cunard Line from its early history in the 1840s through to the early 1930s. White Star Line would eventually merge its business with Cunard Line before Cunard Line took over completely.

This table shows how old each of Cunard’s ships are…

The oldest ship in the Cunard fleet is Queen Mary 2. She is the only remaining ocean liner in the world and also the world’s fastest cruise ship , reaching speeds of up to 32 knots across the Atlantic.

Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth are sister ships, so they are very similar. These are Vista-class ships, with the same shall as other Carnival brand ships such as P&O Cruises’ Arcadia and Holland America Line’s MS Noordam .

The newest Cunard ship, Queen Anne, will be a Pinnacle-class ship, most similar to Holland America Line’s MS Koningsdam .

Queen Anne

Two of the three Cunard ships are very similar in size, but one is much larger, and the new ship in the fleet will sit in the middle. Here’s a look at the Cunard fleet by size, from largest to smallest:

In the photo below, Queen Elizabeth is on the left and the larger Queen Mary 2 is on the right…

Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary 2

Cunard Line is now owned by the Carnival Corporation, and three of the ships are part of ship classes that span other cruise lines.

The Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria are both Vista-class ships and so use the same template as P&O’s Arcadia, the MS Noordam for Holland America Line, and Costa Luminosa for Costa Cruises.

Queen Anne will be a Pinnacle-class ship similar to the Pinnacle-class ships sailing for Holland America Line – MS Koningsdam, MS Nieuw Statendam and MS Rotterdam. She is bigger than those ships, though.

Queen Mary 2 is not part of a cross-line class. She’s a custom-built ocean liner.

Which Cunard ship is the biggest?

The biggest Cunard ship is Queen Mary 2 – she’s around 65% bigger than her sister ships Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria by gross tonnage, and 25% longer.

Queen Mary 2

The new Cunard ship, Queen Anne, will be around 25% smaller than Queen Mary 2, but approximately 25% bigger than the other two Queens.

Which is the smallest Cunard ship?

The smallest ship in the Cunard fleet is Queen Victoria. She is very similar in size to Queen Elizabeth – she is the same length and width, and has the same number of decks – but her gross tonnage is less by around 850 GT. She also has a slightly lower maximum guest capacity.

Queen Victoria

The Cunard ships are very similar when it comes to dining. Here’s a look at the venues you can expect to enjoy onboard:

Cunard Main Dining

There are four main dining restaurants on every Cunard ship, and they’re all the same. They’re the Queen’s Grill, Princess Grill, Britannia Club and Britannia restaurants. Where you eat depends on your suite/stateroom, with the Queens Grill being the most exclusive option.

Suggested read: Cunard Queens Grill Vs Princess Grill – Which To Choose?

Queen’s Grill Restaurant on Queen Elizabeth

The menus do vary by the different restaurants, but the style of dining is the same – you’ll get a choice of options taken from various cuisines, including a small selection of options for any children onboard.

Cunard Alternative Dining

Each of the ships has alternative dining options too, including a buffet – on Queen Mary 2 this is the Kings Court, and on Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth it is the Lido.

Lido Restaurant on Queen Victoria

The buffet is more casual, but at night parts are sectioned off for more unique dining experiences. All ships have a steakhouse and a pub, and they all have a more casual outdoor dining venue too.

Queen Anne Restaurants

The Queen Anne will debut some new restaurants onboard when she launches. She’s retaining the approach to main dining, but will have a selection of new speciality dining options for guests to try.

Tramonto Restaurant on Queen Anne

These will include a Pan-Asian restaurant, a Mediterranean restaurant, and a tapas restaurant, as well as a Wellness Cafe.

Afternoon Tea

Afternoon Tea is taken very seriously on Cunard Line ships. This isn’t just a side option at a cafe – you can choose from a selection of options, including chocolate-themed or Champagne-themed, and it is available in many of the restaurants on the ships.

All Cunard ships offer afternoon tea, so it’s worth exploring the options available across the restaurants if you want to take part in this classic British tradition.

Cunard Daytime Activities

The daytime activities across the Cunard fleet are broadly very similar. All of the ships have a selection of indoor and outdoor games, putting greens, and fitness classes. You can try ballroom dancing lessons, join a choir onboard and even learn to fence.

All of the ships have swimming pools – Queen Mary 2 has a couple more than the other ships, but they all have at least one main outdoor pool, a secondary pool and a third pool in the spa (charges apply to use the spa pool).

Pavilion Pool on board Queen Elizabeth

In terms of unique features, Queen Mary 2 has its own planetarium where guests can learn about the night’s sky. The talks given here are fascinating and it’s a very interactive experience.

Queen Elizabeth also has its own Games Deck where a selection of games can be enjoyed by guests.

Cunard Evening Entertainment

All of the Cunard ships feature a wide selection of entertainment during the evening, including theatre productions, cabaret acts and live musicians. They all have a nightclub too, though they are different venues depending on the ship.

Theatre on Queen Mary 2

Cunard Pet Boarding

Queen Mary 2 is unique in that she offers pet boarding facilities for anyone who wants to travel with their dog or cat. There are kennels where the pets will stay during the cruise, along with an outdoor area for exercise. It even includes an American fire hydrant and a British lamppost to make dogs feel at home when they’re going to the bathroom!

Cunard Ships and Kids

All of the Cunard ships welcome children, although they’re not the best choices for families who want to keep their kids active with a lot of different activities. They do have kids clubs, broken down into different age categories, but the rest of the facilities on the ships are tailored to adult guests.

Kids Play Zone on board Queen Elizabeth

The Cunard ships don’t tend to stay in one region, unlike some other cruise lines which will keep a ship in a certain part of the world long-term.

Queen Mary 2 offers classic transatlantic cruises, but also a selection of Mediterranean and Norwegian Fjords cruises, along with an epic world cruise (that is broken into segments).

Queen Elizabeth offers a diverse range of cruise options, including Mediterranean, US East Coast, Alaska, Asia, South Pacific and Australia cruises.

Queen Victoria has a similarly broad selection of cruises, including sailings to Africa and the Indian Ocean, Australia, the Canary Islands, Northern Europe and Central America. She also has an epic world cruise option.

Queen Anne will sail to similar destinations as Queen Victoria, including her own world voyage in 2025.

Which Cunard ship does transatlantic cruises?

While all Cunard ships offer occasional transatlantic cruises when repositioning, it’s the Queen Mary 2 which offers the sailings regularly. Some are direct between Southampton and New York, while others incorporate the Caribbean for longer cruises.

What is the most luxurious Cunard ship?

All of the Cunard ships are luxurious in their own way and none are a particular standout. Queen Mary 2 is the most spacious and most traditional, but she is also a little older. Queen Anne will be the newest ship and so will offer the most contemporary decor and features.

The Cunard ships all offer a very similar service overall – Cunard has a certain style of cruising, and that is maintained despite the differences in ship ages and size.

Whichever ship you choose you will get to enjoy that ‘Cunard experience’, but there may be a couple of features which sway your decision.

If you want the most spacious ship, choose Queen Mary 2. For a smaller ship experience, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth are both excellent. And if you like the idea of a brand-new ship, book a cruise for 2024 and beyond on Queen Anne.

Villa Vie Odyssey Review

Villa Vie Odyssey (Photo: Villa Vie Residences)

Villa Vie Odyssey is a residential ship offering epic world cruises lasting more than three years. Passengers -- known as "global residents" -- can purchase a cabin to own onboard, starting from $99,999 for inside accommodations, or curate their own journey and purchase one or more of the 17 segments, ranging from 35 to 120 days, of the continuous world cruise program.

The 924-passenger vessel, constructed in 1992, last sailed as Braemar for the Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines. Florida-based Villa Vie Residences was founded to operate the vessel, which it purchased in December 2023. The ship then underwent an eight-week multi-million dollar refurbishment at the historic Harland & Wolff dockyard in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Villa Vie Odyssey Deck Plans Include Virtual Window and Balcony Cabins

The eight-deck ship offers a range of cabins spread across six decks, including wheelchair accessible cabins and accommodations with bath tubs. They lead in with inside cabins measuring 130 square feet, and the refurbishment included the installation of virtual windows on all of the inside rooms, where an HD screen creates the impression of a window.

Next up are 140-square-foot outside cabins, with fixed portholes which don't open, and cabins with larger fixed windows ranging in size from 140- to 175 square feet. From deck 6 up there are balcony cabins, measuring 190 square feet, and one-room suites, with more living space, that are 300 square feet. The largest cabin on Villa Vie Odyssey is the one Owner's Suite located forward on deck 7 next to the bridge. Measuring 675 square feet, it includes a separate bedroom and lounge and has a dining area and balcony.

Unusually, the ship also has 14 cabins located on the uppermost deck, adjacent to the sun deck, swimming pool and four hot tubs. These deluxe balcony cabins all measure 225 square feet.

Each cabin has a queen-size bed, bathroom with premium toiletries, ample storage, TV, air conditioning, safe, mini-fridge, weekly housekeeping service and bi-weekly complimentary laundry. There is also 24-hour room service.

Public areas include three restaurants, eight bars, four lounges, a theater, library, fitness center, pickleball court and 24/7 medical room. The ship also features an interactive and educational culinary center, as well as a golf program with an onboard golf simulator and tours and classes led by a PGA golf professional. Villa Vie Odyssey has a classic wraparound promenade deck and elevators serve all decks.

Ownership and rented cabins for partial segments of the world voyages include all meals, including complimentary wine and beer, onboard enrichment program and shore excursions.

Villa Vie Odyssey marks the latest chapter for the ship which was first launched for the former Crown Cruise Line as Crown Dynasty and also sailed under the names Cunard Crown Dynasty, Crown Majesty and Norwegian Dynasty before being sold to Fred. Olsen in 2001 and renamed Braemar. A popular ship with the Norwegian-owned line that predominantly caters to the British cruise market, prior to the latest renovation the ship was lengthened in 2009 and refurbished in 2019.

Villa Vie Odyssey Offers Remote Working Facilities and Connectivity

While it is likely most folks aboard Villa Vie Odyssey will be retired, the line recognizes that everyone will want to keep in touch with friends and family during the long voyages and some passengers -- particularly those booking shorter segments -- will need to work remotely. To cater for digital nomads the ship has a dedicated business center, with private offices and a conference room. There is desk space in every cabin and Starlink and Viasat 3 will provide fast and reliable internet access.

Villa Vie Odyssey's Launch Date is May 2024

Villa vie odyssey is set to launch on may 15, 2024, when it will set sail from southampton, u.k., on its first world voyage., villa vie odyssey will sail the world.

The ship will circumnavigate the globe every three and a half years for 1,301 days. During these continuous voyages Villa Vie Odyssey will visit 425 ports in 147 countries across all seven continents with destinations including Europe, the Mediterranean, Africa, the Caribbean, South Pacific and Asia. The cruises will feature extended port stays of between two and seven days.

As a small-size ship, Villa Vie Odyssey will be able to access destinations and ports larger ships cannot access, including inland waterways and rivers. In 2019 the former Braemar became the longest ship ever to transit the Corinth Canal.

Villa Vie Odyssey Specs

Villa Vie Odyssey is 24,344 gross tons and carries 924 passengers at double occupancy, with 370 crew members.

Villa Vie Odyssey Review

Review of villa vie odyssey.

The 1993-built (as "Crown Dynasty") cruise ship Villa Vie Odyssey was last named "MS Braemar" as part of Fred Olsen's cruise fleet . The sistership/same-designed Crown Jewel (1992-built) was later renamed to MS Gemini and time-chartered by Celestyal Cruises as "Celestyal Nefeli".

By design, the ship is similar to Superstar Gemini  ( Star Cruises /defunct).

Crown Dynasty's shipbuilding cost  was USD 75 million. The vessel was last refurbished by Fred Olsen in 2019 November. The last drydocking was in 2023 December, following the acquisition by Villa Vie Residences.

The vessel (IMO number 9000699) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 311541000) and registered in Nassau .

History - construction and ownership

On November 29, 2022, Fred Olsen an nounced that is looking for a buyer for the 29-year-old MS Braemar. The last AIS report was on March 9, 2022 (at 18:30 UTC) showing the boat docked/laid up in Rosyth-Edinburgh . When the announcement was made, the shipowner had a total of 45x voyages scheduled for Braemar for 2023-2024 (April 28th through May 7th).

On November 29th (2023), Villa Vie Residences (a new brand) announced a pending ship purchase agreement. The announcement was made by Mikael Petterson (the company's CEO). The vessel's name was not revealed but a video showed MS Braemar. The residence ship's expected lifespan is 15 years (through 2039). Mikael Petterson also announced the possibility for Villa Vie Residences to acquire a second vessel, for US$100+ million.

The vessel changed ownership in March 2024, with a scheduled 8-day drydock followed by a 2-week drydock for refits and basic refurbishments.

On December 13th (2023), Villa Vie Residences confirmed the vessel's acquisition from Fred Olsen Cruise Lines. Renamed (from Braemar to Villa Vie Odyssey), the 924-passenger ship starts revenue operations for the new owner in May 2024 following a multimillion drydock refurbishment (at Harland & Wolff shipyard in Belfast ) that will transform it into a residential ship offering residences/villas instead of staterooms.

During the refit, Villa Vie Odyssey will receive a large-capacity business center (grouping conference spaces and private offices), Starlink internet, an interactive culinary center, a modern golf simulator, and a premium golfing program (with golf-themed land tours and classes led by a PGA-certified professional golfer.

In 2024-Q2, Villa Vie Residences plans to expand its fleet with a second ship.

Villa Vie Odyssey cruise ship (Fred Olsen Braemar)

Fred Olsen Group wholly owns the companies Fred Olsen Cruise Lines Ltd, Fred Olsen Travel Ltd (worldwide tours and vacations via independent operators), Fred Olsen Marine Services AS (shipowner and vessel management), First Olsen Ltd (tanker ships), Dolphin Drilling Holdings Ltd (offshore drilling rigs), Fred Olsen Express (Canary Islands-based fast ferries /catamarans ), Fred Olsen Freight Ltd (cargo shipping and air freight), Fred Olsen Windcarrier AS (transport and installation of offshore wind turbines), Fred Olsen Production AS (offshore petroleum production), Fred Olsen Renewables AS, SeaRoc Group Ltd (offshore and marine consultancy and contracting services), ZephIR Lidar UK (wind measurement devices), Ganger Rolf ASA (energy and shipping).

Also part of Fred Olsen Group, the company Bonheur ASA manages several fully-owned companies, among which are NHST Media Group AS (newspapers and online media) and the real estate companies Stavenes Byggeselskap, Koksa Eiendom, Fred Olsens gate 2. Part of Fred Olsen Group is also Timex Group BV - parent of several watchmaking companies, including the subsidiaries in the USA, India and the Philippines).

The 1000-passenger ship Braemar was originally built/launched as "Crown Dynasty" for Crown Cruise Lines (1984-founded/2001- defunct ) and joined Fred Olsen's fleet in 2001. One of the biggest changes that past cruisers are going to note is the Braemar Room on Deck 5, leading into the new Scottish-inspired Morning Light Pub (that was released on sister cruise liner Balmoral in early 2008). Before the renovation, this space was more of a walkway, but now the expanded Braemar Room has become more of a public room in its own right, with Aztec and nautical-themed design of the decor. This space is also home to a new library, a card room, and an Internet room.

MS Braemar cruise ship stretching

In 2009, MV Braemar (under Fred Olsen's ownership) was stretched by adding a prefabricated middle section. The refit resulted in increased gross tonnage and passenger capacity . During the ship's stretching (done in Germany, at Lloyd Werft's shipyard) were built new cabins, lounges and a restaurant, along with the 2 swimming pools (plus a paddling pool) on Marquee Deck 8 (Sun Deck).

The list of other stretched (elongated) cruise ships includes the fleet mates Balmoral, Boudicca, and Braemar, also the MSC Cruises ships Armonia , Lirica , Opera , the Phoenix Reisen 's Albatros and the Royal Caribbean 's Enchantment of The Seas .

Decks and Cabins

MS Braemar staterooms (a total of 485) include 19x Suites, 200x Balcony cabins, 130x Inside, in all 21 grades. Most Braemar staterooms are 130-175 ft2 Balcony rooms. The largest accommodation is the Superior Suite (300 ft2). Fred Olsen Braemar ship has a total of 40 solo cabins (single-occupancy rooms).

The boat has 8 decks , of which 7 are passenger-accessible and 6 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Most Braemar guests have dinner at the Thistle Restaurant for either 6:15 p.m. or 8:30 p.m. seating. The Thistle is an elegant, circular room with panoramic windows. Those who prefer a more intimate setting should choose the smaller Grampian Restaurant. This also has two seatings but it's mainly for travelers staying in the upper decks. Breakfast and lunch are open-seating, so guests can order waiter-served meals at either restaurant or try the self-serve Palms Cafe.

Follows the complete list of Braemar restaurants and food bars.

  • Thistle Restaurant (main dining room; hosts the formal Gala Dinner; with 2 fixed dinner seatings at 6:15 pm and 8:30 pm, open-seating buffet-style Breakfast 8:00 - 10:00 am and Lunch 12:00 - 2:30 pm)
  • Grampian Restaurant (ship's 2nd largest dining room, with the same menu as the Thistle; features floor-ceiling windows and intimate design)
  • Palms Cafe (alternative buffet-style restaurant, open-seating; offers Breakfast 7:00 - 9:30 am, Brunch 10:30 - 11:30 am, Lunch 12:30 - 2:30 pm, Afternoon Tea 3:30 - 4:30 pm, Dinner 6:30 - 9 pm and Supper Club 11:30 pm - 12:30 am; also features a 24-hour open tea-coffee station)
  • Lido Bar (outdoor bar for alfresco breakfast and lunch)
  • Marquee Bar (casual restaurant for lunch; al-fresco dining, with large, floor-ceiling panoramic windows; serves the pool area with alcoholic/non-alcoholic drinks).

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

MS Braemar is clearly a vessel which attracts repeat cruisers, and much of this is due to the friendliness of the travelers and the camaraderie the small vessel engenders. A lot of the conversations on this cruise liner start with "Last time I was on Braemar..." or "We sailed on the cruise before the extra space was added...." But, instead of acting cliquey, the repeat cruisers are very welcoming, even offering cruising tips to Fred. Olsen newbies.

Villa Vie Odyssey cruise ship (Fred Olsen Braemar)

Villa Vie cruise itineraries

Villa Vie Residences' customers/"cruise residents" own the majority of the company's shares and actively participate in decision-making, including planning the itineraries (regions and destinations to be visited throughout the year).

The Villa Vie brand prioritizes extended port stays (ranging from 2 to 7 days) allowing the ship's residents plenty of time to connect and fully enjoy each destination.

The company offers two all-inclusive options for the residents. The first option is ownership (starting at US$100,000, with monthly maintenance fees from US$1750 per person), while the other option is a "pay-as-you-go" plan (residents select and combine portions/segments of the World Cruise itinerary with a 10% upfront deposit, starting at US$89 pp per day).

Villa Vie Odyssey's Maiden Voyage is currently scheduled for May 15, 2024, when the vessel starts revenue operations for its new owner.

Fred Olsen Braemar itineraries

Fred Olsen's Braemar cruise itinerary program was based on ex-UK voyages visiting ports in the Mediterranean, Iberia (Spain and Portugal), the Canary Islands and the Norwegian Fjords. The itineraries were roundtrips from England (homeports Dover and Southampton ). The ship also offered seasonal Caribbean fly-cruises (departures out of Bridgetown Barbados ), with Transatlantic repositioning crossings between the Caribbean and Europe.

Due to the Coronavirus crisis, the ship was passed for 3+ years (March 2020 through May 2023), restarting on April 28th from Southampton.

MS Braemar was well-known worldwide for its annual (since 2019) voyages in the Aegean Sea (Eastern Med) passing through the Corinth Canal .

Villa Vie Odyssey Wiki

The vessel was launched in 1993 as "Crown Dynasty" for Crown Cruise Lines (1984-founded/2001-defunct). In the period 1993-1997, it was chartered to Cunard Line as "Cunard Crown Dynasty". Named "MS Braemar", it was part of Fred Olsen's fleet in the period 2001-2023, with registered shipowner Braemar Cruise Ltd.

The vessel (Union Naval Valencia yard/hull number 198) is powered by 4x Wartsila marine diesel engines (model 8R32E) with total power output 13,12 MW.

In 2008, the vessel was drydock reconstructed at Blohm+Voss Shipyard ( Hamburg Germany ) and emerged as a brand new (larger) cruise liner with an extra 31-m long midsection. All 70 new cabins were added, along with a new lounge (Observatory), Grampian Restaurant and an expanded Sun Deck (plus one new swimming pool). The biggest change is the Braemar Room (Deck 5) leading into the new Morning Light Pub (Scottish-inspired, it had a debut on Braemar's sistership Balmoral ).

Fred Olsen Braemar went into drydock on November 12th, 2014, for an 8-day general refurb works, various engineering works, as well as extensive interior and exterior painting. A new Cafe Bar/patisserie was installed on Lounge Deck 5 (Cafe Venus) serving luxury chocolates and high-quality coffees. The Library area was also reconfigured. The Card Room was moved to Atlantic Deck 3 and integrated with the Arts & Crafts Center.

MS Braemar's drydock 2019 (November 14-23 at Blohm+Voss Hamburg) was for general maintenance and engineering works, interior renovations (public areas) and cabin refurbishments.

In the Caribbean, Braemar was operated with fly-cruise UK deals pakaging the voyage with flights from England via the Canaries. Return flights were from Bridgetown Barbados to Santa Cruz de Tenerife . Fred Olsen also offered an all-inclusive cruise package upgrade (additional fixed price PP per day) and UK fly-cruises to the Canary Islands (year-round discounted airfare from Southampton ).

In 2018, the ship offered a 14-night "Choose Your Cruise" (Baltic Sea itinerary May 29 - June 11) leaving roundtrip from Southampton UK. On the voyage, passengers were allowed to vote on call ports (choosing between 2 ports) and decide between the Baltic capitals or alternative ports (in Holland, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Estonia). After counting, ballots were delivered to the Captain, who announced the winning port. The originally scheduled itinerary only included St Petersburg (Russia) and passing Kiel Canal (Germany) . The pairs with optional ports of call were Amsterdam-Rotterdam, Copenhagen-Hundested, Tallinn-Saaremaa, St Petersburg (overnight), Helsinki-Kotka, Wismar-Travemunde (Rostock). Fred Olsen also added GBP 200 pp in onboard credit and free drinks and tours on bookings made by March 1, 2018. Prices started from GBP 1800 pp.

Villa Vie Odyssey cruise ship (Fred Olsen Braemar)

In 2019, MS Braemar set a world record as the longest ship ever to pass through Corinth Canal (Greece) . The second passage (in 2021) was scheduled as the following itinerary: (booking code M2109) 25-day "Greek Islands and Corinth Canal Cruise" roundtrip from Southampton (departure April 16, 2021). Prices started from GBP 4000 per person (based on two adults sharing twin-bedded Inside cabins, inclusive of port taxes). Ports of call included Malaga, Valletta, Agios Nikolaos, Rhodes, Ermoupoli, Corinth Canal (passing), Patras, Katakolon, Argostoli, Messina Strait, Stromboli Island, Trapani, Ibiza, Cartagena, Lisbon. The third passage (booking code M2212) was scheduled as a Southampton roundtrip leaving on April 20, 2022. In 2021 were scheduled additional Corinth Canal transition cruises - Sept 23/2022 (25-days from Southampton England ) and March 27/2023 (10-20-days from Valletta Malta ).

Ex-Cuba itineraries 2022 (canceled)

Fred Olsen's Braemar Caribbean winter programs (2021-2022 and 2022-2023) were based on homeporting in Havana Cuba . However, both fly-cruise programs were eventually canceled (in Dec 2020 and Jan 2021).

Both seasons had to start with 30-day Transatlantic crossings (from Southampton to Havana).

Next tables show the two itineraries leaving roundtrip from Cuba.

Cunard Crown Monarch

The Cunard Crown Monarch’s time with Cunard was short. The ship became part of the Cunard fleet when Cunard Line entered into a joint venture with Crown Cruise Line.

As Cunard Crown Monarch, the 1990-built ship was deployed to the Australian market. The ship was placed on itineraries that saw her on voyages between Darwin and Sydney, as well as trans Tasman cruises to New Zealand.

With Cunard Crown Monarch, Cunard intended to bring a new standard of sophistication to the Australian market. This market had been dominated by P&O Holidays’ aged cruise ship Fairstar. Fairstar offered very basic, very casual 3-star cruises; however the ship enjoyed a loyal following.

Cunard Crown Monarch proved too sophisticated for the local market. The ship was not successful and was later withdrawn and returned to Crown Cruise Line which operated her as Nautican.

She has since operated as a Casino ship in Hong Kong, as well as a cruise ship for Phoenix cruises. Today she operated as Voyager for Voyages of Discovery.

cunard crown dynasty cruise ship

A look inside the £479m Queen Anne, Cunard’s first new cruise ship in 14 years

I t all looks very familiar. Especially, perhaps, at first glance. For one thing, that fabled colour scheme is present and correct; that grey-black hue of the hull, the flawless white of the cabin decks, the tell-tale red, striped with black, where the funnel pushes up into the sky. Even the name has a melodic ring of flashback – so much so that, standing at the Hampshire dockside, I have to reach for my phone; check that it has not been used before.

It has not. At least, not by Cunard.

But my sense of déjà vu is forgivable. The British cruise line’s newest baby, Queen Anne , is the latest in a long line of regally named vessels. On Tuesday, she entered British waters for the first time, slipping into Southampton, which will be the base port for many of her voyages. As she came in, she was practically sailing in her ancestors’ wakes.

Ancestors? Well, there are a few. Three of them are core components of the current Cunard fleet – Queen Mary 2 (launched in 2003); Queen Victoria (2007); Queen Elizabeth (2010). Two of them are grande dames of yesteryear, now retired as floating hotels – Queen Elizabeth 2 (moored in Dubai as of 2018), the Queen Mary (a static fixture on the waterfront in Long Beach, California, since 1967). And one of them is sadly gone – the original Queen Elizabeth , consigned to the bottom of Hong Kong harbour by fire in 1972. But it all adds up to a fine heritage. The new girl has a little of all of them about her.

True, she is a 21st-century creation. So much was clear this week, on Wednesday, during a day of preview tours and getting-to-know-yous. Queen Anne is both the 249th ship in the company’s history, and the first Cunard launch in 14 years. She has come alive in Venice over the last two, via the Italian ship-builders Fincantieri, at a reported cost of US$600 million (£479 million). And she is no shrinking violet. At 323m (1,058ft) in length, and with a gross tonnage of 113,300, she is longer and larger than two of her siblings ( Queen Victoria , Queen Elizabeth ) – though shorter and smaller than her flagship, Queen Mary 2 . She can hold 2,996 passengers, and 1,225 crew members. She has 14 restaurants, 12 bars and lounges, a theatre, an art gallery, a casino and a library. She is not a slender yacht for shallow tides.

But for all her various bells and whistles, Queen Anne clings to the quiet elegance that has long been a Cunard hallmark; if not quite since 1839, when British-Canadian shipping magnate Samuel Cunard was awarded the first British transatlantic steamship mail contract, then certainly since 1879, when his business was reorganised as the Cunard Steamship Company Ltd, in the face of competition from the likes of White Star Line – and the golden age of oceanic passenger ships began in earnest. Queen Anne ’s softly carpeted interior has echoes. There is polished wood. There are Art Deco flourishes. That the opening production in its Royal Court Theatre is a pleasingly breezy rendition of Noël Coward’s 1945 film (via his 1936 play) Brief Encounter feels appropriate.

Fast forward (back) to 2024, and it is easy to make a comparison to one of this year’s other major launches – Icon Of The Seas ; the Royal Caribbean behemoth that, with space for 7,600 passengers, is now the biggest cruise ship on the planet. While the two vessels are aimed at different markets, and deliver different styles of travel, the contrast between the somewhat gaudy Icon – with her unmistakable upper-deck spaghetti-pile of brightly coloured water slides – and Queen Anne ’s understated sophistication is striking.

This, of course, is the idea. During a panel discussion on Wednesday afternoon, Lewis Taylor of London-based David Collins Studio – one of the design companies behind the Queen Anne blueprint – spoke of fact-gathering missions to the Cunard Archive in the company’s spiritual home of Liverpool. “It’s an incredible resource to have,” he said. “There is so much on record, from menu cards to colour combinations, and period details that we were able to interpret in a contemporary way.

“It’s important that this new ship has all this DNA. You have to be inspired by those archive references. But you have to reinterpret them. We didn’t want Queen Anne to be a pastiche. This is a ship for the future.”

On-board attempts to add contemporary scratches to that classic gleam are not hard to find. For every exercise in haute cuisine – double-Michelin-starred French chef Michel Roux has crafted an evening menu for the Queens Grill restaurant – there is an edgier take on modern culture. While – as with the three other Cunard ships currently in service – The Gallery is a showroom for London-based specialists Clarendon Fine Art, and everything on the walls is for sale, a brief visit to its well-lit space on Deck 2 will allow you to gaze at works by (at time of writing) Banksy, Los Angeles street artist Mr Brainwash (Thierry Guetta), and Salvador Dalí. The Pavilion – the two-deck space which acts as the heart of the ship – will offer evening screenings of engaging short films, via a partnership with the British Film Institute.

As for the future of the “ship for the future”, it is already here. Tomorrow (May 3), Queen Anne will set off for Lisbon on her inaugural voyage. A two-week jaunt to, and around, the Canary Islands, will follow (May 10-24).

The schedule is busy. A third cruise – the 14-night “British Isles Festival Voyage” – is in the diary for May 24-June 7, and will include a stop in Liverpool, for the official naming ceremony, on June 3. And if any of this has whetted your appetite, a 16-night “Western Mediterranean” odyssey – calling on five ports in Spain (Vigo, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Malaga, La Coruña) and two in Italy (Civitavecchia, Alghero) – is planned for June 7-23 (cabins are still available from £4,189 per person, similar voyages later in the year start at £1,749 a head; 0344 338 8641; cunard.com ).

Classically elegant she may be, but this sailing queen will not have much chance to rest.

Cunard Queen Anne cruise ship arrives in Southampton

Queen Anne

Cunard's newest cruise ship has arrived at its home port of Southampton.

The 3,000-capacity luxury Queen Anne was watched by crowds as it sailed in from the Fincantieri Marghera shipyard in Venice.

It was visible from Gosport and the north coast of the Isle of Wight earlier in the evening.

The vessel - the company's first new cruise ship in 14 years - is due to depart on its maiden voyage to Lisbon on Friday.

Queen Anne

The 113,000-tonne ship joins Cunard's fleet of queens - Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria.

Following a 14-day cruise to the Canary Islands, it is due to embark on a voyage around the British Isles with stops including Edinburgh, the Isle of Skye, Belfast and Cobh.

The voyage also includes a naming ceremony at Cunard's "spiritual home" of Liverpool on 3 June.

Queen Anne arrival

Cunard took ownership of the ship during a traditional handover ceremony at the Italian shipyard in Venice on 19 April.

Speaking at the ceremony, Katie McAlister, president of Cunard, said: "Not only does she reflect the Cunard distinctive style on the outside, the inside perfectly echoes the brand heritage with reimagined, elegant spaces and designs."
