Although the political situation in Cyprus is complex, it's easy to visit both sides of the island.

Most travelers do not need to obtain a visa in advance to visit either the Greek-speaking Republic of Cyprus in the south or Turkish-administered North Cyprus, or to travel between the two.

Here's everything you need to know about visas for Cyprus.

Visa rules for Cyprus

The Greek-speaking Republic of Cyprus claims sovereignty over all of the island, but Cyprus was partitioned into Greek and Turkish territories in 1974. Today, the Republic covers the south and west of Cyprus, about 60% of the island, while the remainder is governed separately as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus – often referred to as North Cyprus, and recognized only by the government of Turkey.

Visas for the Republic of Cyprus

The Republic is a member of the European Union, but it is not part of the Schengen Areas, which means that all EU citizens will need to go through immigration checks on arrival. The good news is that EU citizens, along with visitors from the UK, the US, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Singapore and many other countries can enter the Republic of Cyprus for up to 90 days without a visa.

Residents from countries where visas are required for entry to the Republic, such as Russia, South Africa and Turkey, must apply for a visa through the Republic of Cyprus embassy or consulate . See the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website for a full list. In practice, this is usually a straightforward process.

A 90-day single-entry visa good for tourism costs €20 ($23), while a 90-day visa good for multiple entries costs €60 ($69) – useful for people intending to cross back and forth between the south and North Cyprus. Applicants do not need to apply in their home country; many travelers use the Cyprus embassy in Athens before catching a flight to the Republic. Check with your local Cyprus embassy or consulate to see how long it will take to process the visa application.   For entry with or without a visa, your passport should be valid for at least three months after your intended departure date from Cyprus, with two blank pages for entry and exit stamps. Citizens of the EU and/or Schengen countries can use a national identity card in place of a passport to enter Cyprus.

Check the Republic of Cyprus’s regularly changing entry requirements regarding Covid-19 at the government’s Covid-19 portal , which outlines if special documents and/or tests are required plus any quarantine requirements.

Visa requirements for North Cyprus

It is easy for citizens of almost every nation to visit the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which administers the northern part of the island. With a few exceptions, travelers generally do not need to apply for a visa in advance to visit.   Visas good for 30 to 90 days are typically granted to visitors at land border crossings from the south, and at the airport and two ferry ports in North Cyprus. Passports must be valid for two months after the date of entry to the North; citizens of the EU and/or Schengen countries may use a national identity card in place of a passport.

Check the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’s regularly changing entry requirements regarding Covid-19 at the government’s Covid-19 travel rules website , which outlines current requirements for documents, tests and quarantine.

Crossing between the Republic of Cyprus and Northern Cyprus

The Republic of Cyprus in the south and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the north have been separated since the 1970s by the Green Line, a demilitarized zone administered by the UN. This was once an impregnable barrier, but today, crossing is easy with some minor formalities at the border.

Rules for travel between North Cyprus and the south are the same as for entry into either area from outside the island. If a visa is not required to enter from abroad, one will not be required to enter overland from the other half of the island. In general, it’s easy for travelers to get around both sides of the island after crossing the border.

Officially, travelers who have entered North Cyprus from abroad via the airport in Ercan or the ferry ports at Kyrenia (Girne) and Famagusta (Gazimağusa) are not permitted to enter the Republic. In practice, travelers who are allowed to enter the south without a visa can usually cross without problems, but this may be harder if you come from a non-EU state.

There are seven approved overland crossings, with sporadic negotiations to increase this number. You can cross by vehicle, bicycle or on foot, depending on which crossing you use, and you can also take a taxi across the border to destinations on the far side. The most convenient crossings join the two halves of the divided capital, known as  Nicosia (Lefkosia) in the south and North Nicosia (Lefkoşa) in North Cyprus.

A visa is an entry permit for a short (up το 90 days) or a long stay (up to one year), issued to foreign nationals who wish to enter the territory of the Republic of Cyprus. Cyprus visas have national application, which means that they entitle the holder to enter only the territory of the Republic.

Foreign nationals who intend to travel to Cyprus are advised to consult the relevant information from the list of topics below in order to ascertain whether or not they require a visa, and if so, where and how to apply for it, at the nearest Cyprus Mission (or the Visa Centre to which the Mission may direct them to), allowing ample time before travel for the visa application to be submitted, duly processed and, if approved, issued.

Please note that some Honorary Consuls and Consulates of Cyprus abroad are also entitled to receive applications and issue visas.

As a general rule, it is always advisable to contact the Mission where the applicant would like to submit his/her application in advance to receive applicable information and details.

Do I need a Visa to visit Cyprus, and how long can I stay?

fig tree bay protaras 960x1199

There’s welcome news for holidaymakers in search of Mediterranean sun and sand! As more and more of us get vaccinated against the coronavirus, a growing number of countries are beginning to open their borders to international visitors again.

With this in mind, it’s an opportune moment to take a fresh look at Cyprus’ visit visa policy. In particular, if you’re an international traveller planning to stroll Nicosia’s gorgeous Old Town or sunbathe on Nissi Beach, you’ll want to know: what are the visa requirements for Cyprus, and how long can you stay?

Fortunately, Cyprus’ visit regulations are straightforward for the citizens of dozens of countries and territories. To explain, this sun-kissed island nation operates a very similar visa policy to the EU’s Schengen Area, even though Cyprus is yet to formally become a Schengen member. Here are the need-to-know details.

Citizens of the UK, USA and 61 other countries are visa-exempt

If you’re coming to Cyprus from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, or any of 61 other nations, then you’re visa-exempt for the Schengen Zone and thus Cyprus too. In this case, you’re eligible to stay for up to 90 days in a 180-day period.

This means, for example, that if you come to enjoy this Mediterranean country’s balmy temperatures and blue skies from July to September, for three months, then the next time you could return would be at the start of the next 180-day period, in January. To enter, you just require a passport with at least six months validity remaining.

Notably, from 2022/3, and once Cyprus joins the Schengen Zone, you’ll require what’s called the EU’s ETIAS visa waiver to visit. You can learn more about this on visa website Byevisa’s ETIAS Cyprus page .

EU citizens benefit from freedom of movement

Meanwhile, if you’re journeying to Cyprus from another EU member state, you ordinarily enjoy Freedom of Movement. As such, you can enjoy Cyprus’s famous Aphrodite’s Rock, Coral Bay, and Fig Tree beach for up to three months without having to register.

That said, it’s recommended to keep your passport or ID card with you on your visit, in case you’re asked to show it.

If you’re neither from the EU or Visa-Exempt, you need a visa

Alternatively, if you’re from a country that’s neither an EU member nor visa-exempt, you need a visa to enter Cyprus. These cost 20 euros for Single Entry passes and 60 euros for Double or Multiple Entry passes, unless you’re Russian, in which case they’re free.

The Multiple Entry visa is valid for three or even five years and allows visits of up to 90 days in a 180-day period. The visa takes the form of a sticker in your passport.

Disclaimer: With the information we’ve provided here, you’ll know whether you need a visa to visit Cyprus, and how long you can stay! Importantly, though, with the international travel outlook changing frequently, be sure to pay attention to your government’s and the Cyprus government’s guidelines before booking any travel.

Visa information: who needs a visa to visit cyprus.

Photo of author

Before planning a trip to the beautiful island of Cyprus, it’s essential to understand the visa requirements for your visit. Navigating visa policies can be confusing, but this guide will break down the information you need to determine whether you need a visa to visit Cyprus and how to obtain one if necessary.

Table of Contents

Cyprus in the European Union and Schengen Area

Cyprus as an EU member state Cyprus became a member of the European Union (EU) in 2004. As a result, EU citizens can travel to Cyprus without a visa for short stays, usually up to 90 days within a 180-day period. They only need to present a valid passport or national ID card upon arrival.

Schengen Area and Cyprus’ position regarding visa policies While Cyprus is an EU member state, it is not yet a part of the Schengen Area. The Schengen Area is a group of 26 European countries that have abolished passport and visa controls at their mutual borders, allowing for free movement between the member states. Cyprus is in the process of joining the Schengen Area, but until it does, it maintains its own visa policy.

Visa-Free Entry for Short Stays

List of countries eligible for visa-free travel Citizens of EU countries, as well as citizens from several other countries, can enter Cyprus without a visa for short stays. These countries include the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and several others. For a full list of visa-exempt countries, consult the official Cyprus government website or your country’s embassy in Cyprus.

Duration of allowed stay without a visa For citizens of visa-exempt countries, the allowed duration of stay without a visa is usually 90 days within a 180-day period. However, the exact duration can vary depending on your nationality and the purpose of your visit. Be sure to check the specific requirements for your country before traveling.

Conditions and requirements for visa-free entry To enter Cyprus without a visa, travellers must have a valid passport with at least six months remaining before its expiration date. Additionally, visitors may be asked to provide proof of sufficient funds for the duration of their stay and evidence of accommodations or return travel arrangements. While EU citizens can also use a national ID card for entry, it’s recommended to carry a passport for identification purposes during your visit.

Short-stay Visa (C Visa)

Eligibility and purpose If you’re not from a visa-exempt country, you will need to apply for a short-stay visa (C Visa) to visit Cyprus for tourism, business, family visits, or other short-term purposes. The short-stay visa allows you to stay in Cyprus for up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

Application process and required documents To apply for a short-stay visa, you must submit an application at the nearest Cyprus embassy or consulate in your country of residence. Required documents for the application typically include:

  • A completed and signed visa application form
  • A valid passport with at least three months remaining beyond your intended departure date from Cyprus
  • Two recent passport-sized photos
  • Proof of travel insurance covering medical expenses and repatriation
  • Evidence of sufficient funds to cover your stay
  • Proof of accommodations or an invitation letter from a host in Cyprus
  • A detailed travel itinerary or round-trip flight reservations
  • Additional documents may be required depending on the purpose of your visit, such as an invitation letter for business visits or proof of enrollment for students

Duration and validity Short-stay visas are usually valid for multiple entries within the 180-day period, allowing you to visit Cyprus and other non-Schengen countries during your stay. However, the exact validity and allowed duration of your visa will be determined by the issuing authority.

Fees Fees for a short-stay visa can vary depending on your nationality and the type of visa you are applying for. Be sure to check with the Cyprus embassy or consulate in your country for the most up-to-date fee information. For the UK, check here .

Long-stay Visa (D Visa)

Eligibility and purpose If you plan to stay in Cyprus for more than 90 days, you will need to apply for a long-stay visa (D Visa). Long-stay visas are issued for purposes such as work, study, or family reunification.

Application process and required documents The application process for a long-stay visa is similar to that of a short-stay visa but may require additional documents depending on the purpose of your visit. For example, you may need to provide proof of employment, enrollment in a study program, or a marriage certificate for family reunification.

Duration and validity Long-stay visas are usually valid for the duration of your intended purpose, such as the length of your employment contract or study program. After entering Cyprus on a long-stay visa, you may be required to apply for a residence permit within a specified period.

Fees Fees for a long-stay visa can vary depending on your nationality and the type of visa you are applying for. Be sure to check with the Cyprus embassy or consulate in your country for the most up-to-date fee information. For the UK, check here .

Visa Processing Time

Standard processing time The standard processing time for a Cyprus visa application is typically 10 to 15 days. However, it’s important to note that processing times can vary depending on factors such as the time of year, the workload at the embassy or consulate, and your nationality. It is recommended to apply for your visa at least three weeks before your intended travel date to allow sufficient time for processing.

Expedited processing In some cases, expedited processing may be available for an additional fee. If you require a visa urgently, contact the Cyprus embassy or consulate in your country to inquire about expedited processing options and fees.

Visa Rejections and Appeals

Common reasons for visa rejections Visa applications can be rejected for various reasons, including incomplete or incorrect documentation, insufficient funds, or concerns about the applicant’s intention to return to their home country after their visit. To minimise the risk of a visa rejection, ensure that your application is complete, accurate, and supported by the required documents.

Appeals process If your visa application is rejected, you may have the right to appeal the decision. The appeals process and timeframes can vary depending on your nationality and the type of visa you applied for. Consult the rejection notice provided by the embassy or consulate for information on how to file an appeal and the applicable deadlines.

Understanding the visa requirements for visiting Cyprus is an essential step in planning your trip. Ensure that you are aware of your eligibility for visa-free travel or the need to apply for a short-stay or long-stay visa before making your travel arrangements. By following the guidelines provided in this article and consulting the official Cyprus government website or your country’s embassy in Cyprus, you can ensure a smooth visa application process and enjoy your time exploring the beautiful island nation.

How to apply for Cyprus tourist visa from the UK

unsplash-image-Q1PWLzsn61Q.jpg

Most people reading this blog in the UK will never need to worry about getting a tourist visa for Cyprus. For most readers in the UK, Europe and much of the Western world, visas are something you rarely think about - however they most definitely are still a thing, and recently we had to go through this process in order to obtain a visa for Cyprus for somebody who requires it to enter the territory. With long-haul travel still unlikely for a few months to come, European travel is the go-to right now and a trip to Cyprus is on the cards.

Applying for a Cyprus visa wasn’t straight forward. Like most visa applications, even during Covid-19, in-person appointments are still preferred to confirm identity and process the visa. To add to difficulties, there was no visa appointments available for a month and when there was availability it seemed to only have 2 appointments available on those days. But, the Cypriot Embassy have allowed visitors to the island to submit visa applications via post since February to the London office. The application administration is processed by VFS Global, who appear to have a near-monopoly on this industry having experienced them for Denmark, India, Russia as well as Cyprus. My difficulty in this was how little information is actually on their website for submitting by post - the below is the extent of information they provide, which is pretty ridiculous, with the link simply going to a schedule of optional services.

Screenshot 2021-08-30 at 16.52.46.png

After several emails back and forth, I finally was able to confirm with the VFS what you need to do in order to send the application by post.

Making your application

First, collate all of your original documents with photocopies. This includes all of the following:

UK residence permit card

proof of funds (credit card, bank statement showing enough funds for £50 per day)

proof of employment (pay slip) AND a letter from your employer confirming you work for the company

proof of ticketed return travel (i.e. your itinerary with a reservation code with the airline from UK to Cyprus and back)

proof of accommodation (a confirmation from a hotel booking site with the applicant’s name on will suffice)

AND finally, the completed application form (found here ) has to be printed and filled out using pen, not digitally (unfortunately). A new photograph within the required dimensions must be glued to the application itself.

The documents need to be sent to:

Cyprus Visa Application Centre, 66 Wilson Street, EC2A 2BT, London, United Kingdom

Please, please, please do not send by low cost postal service - you are sending sensitive documents that are expensive to replace, so spend more and don’t just opt for 2nd Class post. I would recommend going for Royal Mail Special Delivery 1pm. This will arrive by 1pm the next working day and the price is not too expensive, around £7, which ensures end to end tracking at every delivery office and scan as well as compensation for lost postage if necessary. The extra cost for Special Delivery 9am is likely overkill as was quoted at almost three times the cost over 1pm - for only guaranteeing delivery four hours earlier.

The items arrived by post to VFS the next working day and by working day 2 after arriving, we received a call asking to make payment by credit card over the phone. They had sent receipt of the payment as well as the DX tracking codes for the passport and residence permit. On working day 3, we received back the residence permit by DX Secure Delivery, which was a relief.

Then the wait begun for the visa to be created and passport returned. In all, we received notification on working day 12 that it had been processed and that it would be delivered the next day. In total, it was a little shy of three and a half weeks from sending the documents at the Post Office to receiving it all back - which is an okay amount of time for processing.

Advice for applicants of Cyprus Visa in the UK

If you already have a Schengen Visa that is valid, then you do not have to get a separate Cyprus Visa. The Cypriot Government recognise the Schengen Visa for entry to the island despite not being part of the pan-European border free zone. You should note this does require some hoops to jump through:

It must be a multi-entry type C Schengen Visa rated for double or multi-entry

You must be visiting Cyprus during the validity period i.e. you would not be able to enter Cyprus on the 1st April on a Schengen Visa if it was not valid until the 1st May - even if you fulfil the multi-entry requirement

Although I have no proof, I do not believe that entry into Cyprus would count towards your Schengen Visa entries if you had a double entry type - this owes to the fact you would not be entering the Schengen zone.

If you live in the UK and do not have automatic visa-free entry into Europe, I recommend the following. Book a couple of European holidays within the Schengen zone, preferably with points and miles or with flexible booking options in case you need to cancel, hoping that you are issue with double or multi entry type visa. Then also book a trip to Cyprus that is within the validity time, this will mean you can bypass having to go through the laborious process of getting another visa - I hadn’t been so organised at planning.

A final note

Whilst I am writing this to help others in similar situations, please double check with VFS Global or the Cypriot Embassy before applying to double check what the requirements are. I will not be responsible if there is any issues in your application by following this guide although I hope it helps clear up any ambiguity from the process that is inaccessible from their respective websites.

A Student visa is usually for a longer course. You must be sponsored by a licensed college or university and have a confirmed place. On this visa, you may be able to do some work.

A Child Student visa is for 4 to 17 year olds who want to study at an independent school. If you’re 16 or over, this visa lets you do some work.

Your family members can apply if you have been given asylum or 5 years’ humanitarian protection, and not have British citizenship.

If your family member is from the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein

If you’re from the eu, switzerland, norway, iceland or liechtenstein.

If you started living in the UK by 31 December 2020, you may be able to apply to the free EU Settlement Scheme instead of applying for a visa. The deadline to apply was 30 June 2021, but you can still apply if you can show reasonable grounds for the delay in applying.

You’ll need to apply for a returning resident visa to come back to the UK if one of the following is true:

you had indefinite leave to remain under the EU Settlement Scheme (‘settled status’) and left the UK for more than 5 continuous years (or 4 continuous years if you’re a Swiss citizen or their family member)

you had permanent permission to stay in the UK (‘indefinite leave to remain’) but it was not under the EU Settlement Scheme and you left the UK for more than 2 years

Other visas

There may be another visa that’s right for you based on your circumstances. Check if you need a visa and what other visas you’re eligible for.
